This article investigates the possibility of obtaining genotypes of garden strawberry with enhanced fruit strength. The creation of species and varieties with the specified feature is expected to improve the quality, transportability and storability of berries. Experiments were performed in 2015–2020 at the collection and breeding plots of the Kokinsky testing station of the Federal Horticultural Research Centre for Breeding, Agrotechnology and Nursery. 29 species of the domestic and foreign selection, 7 choice species, as well as the hybrid seedlings of 22 crossing combinations and 3 open pollination populations of garden strawberries, were investigated. The aim was to identify sources of increased trength and perspective crossing combinations, affording the highest yield of seedlings with firm fruits. The examination of the fruit strength was performed at the stage of optimal maturity. Berries crushing force was determined using a VR-04MS-2-BR balance by applying pressure to the fruits until the first drop of juice appears. The measurement results were converted into international units, i.e., Newtons (1 kg = 9.8 N). The phenotypic evaluation of varieties and species of garden strawberries based on the fruit strength revealed genotypes with the firmest fruits — Kleri, Darselect, Tenira, Selekta, Polka, Tzaritza, Aquarelle, Irma and the 3-366-9 selection. These varieties yield the fruits, which endure the crashing force of over 10 N. In the hybrid progeny, the fruit strength varied within a wide range, and its significant change within the crossing combinations and populations of open pollination was revealed. The Darselect, Cleri, Irma, Tzaritza varieties are the most valuable seed parents in the transmission of the high strength character. Within the research period, the best crossing combination yielding seedlings with fi m fruits were Alfa×Darselect, Festival Romashka×Darselect, Irma×Lyubava, 3-366-9×Kleri, Nashe Podmoskovye×Irma, Festival Romashka×Kleri and open pollination population of the Kleri, Darselect, Tzariza varieties. 42.2 to 60.3 % of hybrid seedlings yielded fruits with the crushing force of over 10 N, and an average value for the families amounted to 9.6–11.2 N.

Company value is very important because it is a reflection of the company's performance that shows the company's prospects in the future which is also an indicator of the market assessment of the company as a whole. The purpose of this study is to determine together the effect of profitability (X1) and dividend policy (X2) on firm value (Y). This research was conducted on the Indonesia Stock Exchange by taking data through IDX. It taken 30 companies as the samples that registered in manufacturing companies in the period of 2018-2020 with the purposive sampling method. The analysis technique used is descriptive statistics. Many coastal communities in the US use base flood elevation (BFE) maps for the 100-year return period, specified on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), to design structures and infrastructure. The FIRMs are increasingly known to have serious problems in accurately specifying the risk coastal communities face, as most recently evidenced during hurricanes Harvey and Irma in 2017 and Florence and Michael in 2018. The FIRM BFE maps also do not include the impact of sea level rise, which clearly needs to be considered in the design of coastal structures over the next several decades given recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) sea level rise (SLR) projections. Here, we generate alternative BFE maps (STORMTOOLS Design Elevation (SDE) maps) for coastal waters of Rhode Island (RI) using surge predictions from tropical and extratropical storms of the coupled surge-wave models from the US Army Corp of Engineers, North Atlantic Comprehensive Coast Study (NACCS). Wave predictions are based on application of a steady state, spectral wave model (STWAVE), while impacts of coastal erosion/accretion and changes of geomorphology are modeled using XBeach. The high-resolution application of XBeach to the southern RI shoreline has dramatically increased the ability to represent the details of dune erosion and overtopping and the associated development of surge channels and over-wash fans and the resulting landward impact on inundation and waves. All methods used were consistent with FEMA guidelines for the study area and used FEMA-approved models. Maps were generated for 0, 2 ft (0.6 m), 5 ft (1.5 m), 7 ft (2.1 m), and 10 ft (3.1 m) of sea level rise, reflecting NOAA high estimates at various times for the study area through 2100. Results of the simulations are shown for both the southern RI shoreline (South Coast) and Narragansett Bay, to facilitate communication of projected BFEs to the general public. The maps are hosted on the STORMTOOLS ESRI Hub to facilitate access to the data. They are also now part of the RI Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) risk-based permitting system. The user interface allows access to all supporting data including grade elevation, inundation depth, and wave crest heights as well as corresponding FEMA FIRM BFEs and associated zones.

This article contends that although much research on the business value of IT focuses on firm-level impacts, studies have begun incorporating industry-level variables as explanatory factors of interest to offer better contextualized explanations for the differences in value firms obtained from their IT across different industries. The authors present a multi-level model of IT value where industry-level and firm-level factors jointly determine the value a firm obtains from its IT. By using a nested model to examine industry to firm interactions, they are able to control for problematic violations of statistical assumptions that are likely to bias estimates from conventional methods. Their analysis shows that all of the industry factors we examined had significant interaction effects. Specifically, industry concentration, industry growth, industry capital intensity, industry outsourcing, and presence in service sector significantly impact firm-level IT value. More interestingly, the authors find these impacts manifest not as mean differences between industries, but rather as interactions with firm-level effects.

Firms from developed countries are increasingly offshore outsourcing services to developing countries to have cost as well competitive advantages. Although this is a growing practice, there has been limited empirical attention in understanding the outsourcing phenomenon, particularly from the perspective of service provider firms that execute important business processes for their overseas clients. Despite growing trends to outsource, only a few service provider firms report success. This puts the service provider firms under increasing pressure to add value and improve quality of relationship. They have to depend not only on tangible factors but some intangible factors also play an important role in their performance. In this paper, the authors try to find out factors that influence performance of service provider firms. Multiple regressions using four indicators of firm performance are carried out to see the influence of certain factors on information technology enabled service (ITES) firms’ performance.

The inclusion of the CIO in the top management team (TMT) is one indicator of how top executives view the role of IT within their firms. This study draws upon the upper echelons theory to examine the organizational factors contributing to the CIO inclusion. A panel data set is used to empirically test the hypotheses. The results show that TMT age and firm diversification are found to be linked to the CIO inclusion. The study contributes to an understanding of the relationship between the CIO and TMT and provides a potential measure of IT importance within firms.

This study investigates the market value impacts of IT-enabled supply chain systems using event study method. The authors examine abnormal stock returns to investments in IT-enabled SCM systems announced by 346 firms from 2001 to 2004, and find significant, positive abnormal returns for two, three, and five day periods surrounding the event date. Further, the authors employ organizational integration perspective to test if market value impacts differ based on the functional scope, physical scope and the industry context of the SCM systems adopted by the firms. Using a multiple regression analysis, the authors find the abnormal returns to be greater for firms investing in SCM systems with greater functional scope and physical scope. The authors find marginal evidence for the effect of industry context and no impact of firm size on the market value generated from investments in SCM systems.

This article aims to empirically investigate the factors that affects the adoption of big data analytics by firms (adopters and non-adopters). The current study is based on three feature that influence BDA adoption: technological context (relative advantage, complexity, compatibility), organizational context (top management support, technology readiness, organizational data environment), and environmental context (competitive pressure, and trading partner pressure). A structured questionnaire-based survey method was used to collect data from 231 firm managers. Relevant hypotheses were derived and tested by partial least squares. The results indicated that technology, organization and environment contexts impact firms' adoption of big data analytics. The findings also revealed that relative advantage, complexity, compatibility, top management support, technology readiness, organizational data environment and competitive pressure have a significant influence on the adopters of big data analytics, whereas relative advantage, complexity and competitive pressure have a significant influence on the non-adopters of big data analytics.

Questo articolo ripercorre le origini culturali, letterarie e cinematografiche della revenante protagonista di Irma Vep (2022), serie TV di Olivier Assayas, per chiarire la sua rilettura del personaggio della vampira. L’analisi richiama la raminga succhiasangue dai poteri soprannaturali nella letteratura ottocentesca francese, per poi rintracciare la sua trasfigurazione in umana criminale dello spazio urbano novecentesco nei Vampires (1915) di Louis Feuillade, serial muto con protagonista la ladra dal nome anagrammatico di Irma Vep. La serie di Assayas rivisita tanto la figura della vampira quanto la filmografia dello stesso regista: Assayas ripropone infatti, in formato seriale, un suo omonimo film del 1996, ossia il dietro-le-quinte della produzione di una serie remake del serial di Feuillade. Quando l’attrice protagonista del remake si perde nel suo personaggio, lo spirito di Irma Vep si impadronisce della sua nuova interprete. L’archetipo della vampira si trasforma così in una metafora del rigenerarsi filmico. Sfidato dall’industria delle piattaforme streaming, lo spirito del cinema risuscita insistentemente, impossessandosi di nuovi veicoli artistici e vivificando la serialità cinematografica à la Feuillade. Irma Vep, doppio vampiresco in senso letterale, incarna dunque la continua resurrezione dello spirito del cinema, che oggi si muove, addirittura, dai film per il grande schermo alle serie d’auteur per il piccolo.

Information security breaches pose a growing threat to organizations and individuals, particularly those that are heavily involved in e-business/e-commerce. An information security breach can have wide-ranging impacts, including influencing the behaviors of competitors and vice versa within the context of a competitive marketplace. Therefore, there is a need for further exploration of implications of information security breaches beyond the focus of the breached firm. This study investigates the financial impact of publicly announced information security breaches on breached firms and their non-breached competitors. While controlling for size and the industry the firm operates in, the authors focus on specific types of information security breaches (Denial of Service, Website Defacement, Data Theft, and Data Corruption). Unlike previous studies that have used event study methodology, the authors investigate information transfer effects that result from information security breaches using the matched sampling method. The study reveals statistically significant evidence of the presence of intra-industry information transfer for some types of security breaches. The authors also found evidence of contagion effects, but no similar evidence concerning competition effect.

The purpose of this research is to examine how the Irish Republican Army has been represented in theatrical cinema since the 1930s. The goal is to demonstrate the necessity for historical accuracy in movies produced for public entertainment, which often neglect historical facts and circumstances in portraying an organization as controversial and complex as the IRA. This has been done by examining five movies produced for wide-distribution and comparing each to the detailed historical record. Upon analysis of these movies, it becomes clear that the films which are the most historically relevant are also the most powerful cinematic productions, both through emotional power and overall entertainment.

Due to the complexity, multi-scale, and multi-physics nature of the mathematical models for fires, current numerical models require too much computational effort to be useful in design and real-time decision making, especially when dealing with fires over large domains. To reduce the computational time while retaining the complexity of the domain and physics, our research has focused on several reduced-order modeling techniques. Our contributions are improving wildland fire reduced-order models (ROMs), creating new ROM techniques for nonlinear systems, and preserving optimality when discretizing a continuous-time ROM. Currently, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is being used to reduce wildland fire-spread models with limited success. We use a technique known as the discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) to address the slowness due to the nonlinearity. We create new methods to reduce nonlinear models, such as the Burgers' equation, that perform better than POD over a wider range of input conditions. Further, these ROMs can often be constructed without needing to capture full-order solutions a priori. This significantly reduces the off-line costs associated with creating the ROM. Finally, we investigate methods of time-discretization that preserve the optimality conditions in a certain norm associated with the input to output mapping of a dynamical system. In particular, we are able to show that the Crank-Nicholson method preserves the optimality conditions, but other single-step methods do not. We further clarify the need for these discrete-time ROMs to match at infinity in order to ensure local optimality.

L'exchange bias, fenomeno legato allo spostamento del ciclo di isteresi lungo l'asse del campo magnetico, è osservato nei materiali ferromagnetici(FM)-antiferromagnetici(AFM) accoppiati per scambio. Il suo studio, soprattutto nelle nanostrutture, è interessante sia da un punto di vista fenomenologico sia per ragioni tecnologiche. In campo teorico, la riduzione delle dimensioni laterali nei sistemi FM-AFM può portare a sostanziali cambiamenti nell'entità dello spostamento del ciclo e nella coercitività. Da un punto di vista tecnologico, lo studio del fenomeno di exchange bias è incentivato dal grande sviluppo dello storage magnetico e della spintronica; le testine di lettura sono tipicamente composte da valvole di spin o strutture a giunzione tunnel, nelle quali i bistrati FM-AFM accoppiati per scambio costituiscono una parte essenziale. Inoltre, è stato recentemente dimostrato che le interazioni di scambio FM-AFM possono essere usate per migliorare la stabilità dei mezzi di registrazione magnetica. Questo lavoro di tesi riporta lo studio del fenomeno di exchange bias in film sottili di IrMn/NiFe ed in dots di uguale composizione ma con diverse dimensioni (1000, 500 e 300nm), allo scopo di comprendere come il confinamento spaziale influenzi il meccanismo di accoppiamento di scambio e la sua evoluzione magnetotermica. I campioni sono stati preparati mediante litografia a fascio di elettroni e dc-magnetron sputtering e caratterizzati strutturalmente attraverso tecniche di microscopia elettronica. Lo studio delle proprietà magnetiche è stato realizzato mediante magnetometria ad effetto Kerr magneto-ottico, tecnica molto efficace per indagini su film sottili e nanostrutture, di cui la tesi riporta un'ampia trattazione. Infine, i risultati sperimentali sono stati affiancati a simulazioni micromagnetiche, così da ottenere un quadro completo dell'effetto di exchange bias nel sistema IrMn/NiFe.

Filmer skapar en historisk värld för dess åskådare. Att skapa en historisk värld är ett sätt att göra historia, detta utifrån samtidens ideologi, politik och kultur. Med denna uppsats undersöks fyra filmer om hur terroristorganisationerna IRA och RAF framställs, detta för att synliggöra den samtida diskursen under 1970- och 1990-talet då filmerna är producerade. Filmerna om IRA är; Hennessy (1975) och Some Mother’s Son (1996), filmerna om RAF är; The Third Generation (1979) och Den Demokratiske Terroristen (1992). Filmerna analyseras utifrån en textuell, kontextuell och sociohistorisk nivå. Den textuella nivån bygger på en strukturalistisk analys av hur terroristorganisationerna identifieras av oss åskådare, och den kontextuella nivån bygger i sin tur på en diskursanalys av hur filmerna speglar sin samtid. Vidare bygger den sociohistoriska nivån på en ideologiteori, för att vidare analysera huruvida filmerna förhåller sig med den rådande hegemonin eller förhåller sig till anti-hegemoniska idéer av samtiden. I resultatet finnes skillnader mellan de två filmerna om IRA, där filmen från 1970-talets förhåller sig kritiskt till organisationen, samtidigt som filmen från 1990-talet förhåller sig positiv till organisationens mål. Vad gäller filmerna om RAF förhåller sig båda filmerna sig snarare neutralt till organisationen, samtidigt som en förståelse visas gällande organisationens syfte. Dessa två filmer visar snarare en tydligare kritik till den samtida politiken i Västtyskland. Våldet är ett återkommande tema i samtliga filmer, där det både romantiseras men dessutom polariserar filmernas karaktärer mellan ond och god.

Kan Prateepjinda Terrorism in Popular Culture: A Discourse Analysis of the Portrayal of IRA Terrorism in Films Abstract The paper begins by asserting that -terrorism‖ is a social construct based on discourse from a particular historical context, and that our understanding of terrorism is fashioned by that discourse. It goes on to argue that film, as a powerful medium of popular culture, generates meaning of social events and gives filmgoers a feeling of reality; film functions as a second view on the world, guiding audiences from reel to real. The study shows how the forty-year long (1968-2008) history of IRA terrorism is portrayed through a selection of eight films, and the -articulation‖ and -interpellation‖ are studied empirically through the portrayal of terrorism in these films. The discourse on terrorism is analyzed in terms of discourse productivity, and the study uses Foucault's genealogy to trace the -history of present-day IRA terrorism.‖ The findings show that discursive formations are displayed as four different features of IRA terrorism constructed by film language and textual language. These different features reveal the discontinuity of the discourse that is framed by particular time periods. The Stepford Wives (Forbes, 1975) occupies an unusual position in cinematic history. As is often the case with cult texts, the film itself was a box office flop, despite the hype of its initial release in the US. Though it was intended as a feminist diatribe, it was fervently derided by Betty Friedan, whose 1963 book The Feminine Mystique is literalised in The Stepford Wives. Even Ira Levin, author of the original 1972 novel from which the film was adapted concedes he was less than enthused with what he saw on screen. Despite this, the term Stepford wife has become idiolect for a particular kind of one-dimensional, upper-middle class woman who is figuratively, and to some extent literally, an automation. Indeed, one does not need to have heard of the film or Levin’s book to be familiar concept. Significantly, The Stepford Wives is not a moment in film history. It is an entire universe. It spawned several made-for-television sequels that speak back to gender politics of the 1980s/1990s. It was reimagined by Frank Oz in 2004, starring a high-profile cast including Better Midler and Glenn Close. More recently, it inspired Jordan Peele’s critically acclaimed horror film Get Out (2017). This timely and compelling study gives The Stepford Wives the serious scholarly attention it deserves. In doing so, the significance of the film as a socio-cultural and socio-political document in its own right is underscored. Abstract Harold Arlen and His Songs is the first full-length study of the work of one of the great composers of the American Songbook. Although he created many standards, Arlen lacks the name recognition of some of his peers. He wrote in wide range of styles, from ballads like “Over the Rainbow,” to comic “list” numbers like “Lydia the Tattooed Lady,” to jazz- and blues-infused songs like “Blues in the Night,” to intense torch songs like “The Man That Got Away.” While analysis of American popular song of this era (ca. 1920–1970) has often focused on the music, this study treats Arlen’s works as true collaborations between composer and lyricist, something he emphasized as a “happy wedding.” The book is organized structurally by Arlen’s work with each of his principal lyricists, Ted Koehler, Yip Harburg, Johnny Mercer, Leo Robin, Dorothy Fields, Ira Gershwin, Truman Capote, Dory Langdon, and Martin Charnin. This approach yields a roughly chronological trajectory extending over forty years from 1929 to the early 1970s, and across three main venues, the Cotton Club of Harlem, Broadway, and Hollywood. Arlen was more closely associated than his peers with prominent Black singers, and he composed scores for several Black-cast stage and film musicals. As arranger, pianist, and singer, Arlen was also active as a performer of his own songs, on record, radio, and television.

Born into a poor Virginian family, John Treville Latouche (1914–1956), in his short life, made a profound mark on America’s musical theater as a lyricist and librettist. The wit and skill of his lyrics elicited comparisons with the likes of Ira Gershwin and Lorenz Hart, but he had too, as Stephen Sondheim noted, “a large vision of what musical theater could be,” and he proved especially venturesome in helping to develop a lyric theater that innovatively combined music, word, dance, and costume and set design. Many of his pieces, even if not commonly known today, remain high points in the history of American musical theater, including Cabin in the Sky (1940), Beggar’s Holiday (1946), The Golden Apple (1954), The Ballad of Baby Doe (1956), and Candide (1956). Extremely versatile, he also wrote cabaret songs, participated in documentary and avant-garde film, translated poetry, and adapted plays. Meanwhile, as one of Manhattan’s most celebrated raconteurs and hosts, he established friendships with many notables, including Paul and Jane Bowles, Carson McCullers, Frank O’Hara, Dawn Powell, Ned Rorem, Virgil Thomson, and Gore Vidal—a dazzling constellation of diverse artists all attracted to Latouche’s brilliance and joie de vivre, not to mention his support for their work. This book draws widely on archival collections both at home and abroad, including Latouche’s diaries and the papers of such collaborators as Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, Douglas Moore, and Jerome Moross to tell for the first time the story of this fascinating man and his work.

Abstract Olivier Assayas’s sixth film, Irma Vep, charts the difficulties that beset a film crew remaking Louis Feuillade’s feuilleton Les Vampires (1915-16) for television. Reviewers have generally referred to Irma Vep as a film about film-making and as such it has been compared with Truffaut’s La Nuit am éricaine, which also featured Jean-Pierre Leaud. This comparison is pushed even further when Assayas and Truffaut are linked by their respective writings for Cahiers du cin éma. However, Irma Vep is not concerned simply with film-making, but is in fact a film about remaking. Ironically, the comparisons made by reviewers appear to position Assayas’s film as a kind of remake of Truffaut’s. This chapter is primarily concerned with the remake as a cinematic and cultural phenomenon and will argue that spectatorship itself may be regarded, as Irma Vep demonstrates, as a form of remaking. It will be asserted that the spectator ‘remakes’ the film viewed, afterwards, in and through memory.

Ira Deutchman is a film producer, director, film executive, and a legendary figure in the landscape for independent film over the last four decades. He is also a professor of professional practice in the School of the Arts at Columbia University. As a co-founder of Cinecom, Deutchman distributed Altman’s Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982) and Secret Honor (1984). As co-founder of Fine Line Features, he distributed Altman’s comeback The Player (1992) and Short Cuts (1993). Deutchman was executive producer on Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994), an Alan Rudolph film produced by Robert Altman. While at Fine Line, Deutchman shepherded Altman’s proposed two-film projects based on Tony Kushner’s Angels in America. In this interview, Deutchman discusses his role as a distributor for several later Altman films, including Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Secret Honor, The Player and Short Cuts.

Most existing object-based image retrieval systems are based on single object matching, with its main limitation being that one individual image region (object) can hardly represent the user’s retrieval target, especially when more than one object of interest is involved in the retrieval. Integrated Region Matching (IRM) has been used to improve the retrieval accuracy by evaluating the overall similarity between images and incorporating the properties of all the regions in the images. However, IRM does not take the user’s preferred regions into account and has undesirable time complexity. In this article, we present a Feedback-based Image Clustering and Retrieval Framework (FIRM) using a novel image clustering algorithm and integrating it with Integrated Region Matching (IRM) and Relevance Feedback (RF). The performance of the system is evaluated on a large image database, demonstrating the effectiveness of our framework in catching users’ retrieval interests in object-based image retrieval.

Abstract Until the archives in London, Dublin, and Washington are open and unless the IRA provides the minutes of its Army Council, it is impossible to do more than offer a provisional judgement on the roles played by the Major and Blair Governments in the peace process. Yet, it is at least possible to lay to rest one of the myths that has already gained credence in both journalistic and academic accounts, namely that the Belfast Agreement was possible only because the Blair Government broke with the approach of John Major. The Major administration’s alleged failure to exploit constructively the first IRA cease-fire in 1994 is claimed to have resulted in its collapse, endangering the historic opportunity created by the work of the real authors of the peace process, John Hume, Gerry Adams, and Albert Reynolds. It was Major’s insistence that the IRA begin the process of decommissioning its arsenal that, according to critics, destroyed the first cease fire.
