Chapter 18 construes Coleridge’s last Notebook (March–April 1834, which he titled, ‘Faith, Prayer, Meditation’) as the coda to his work and life, an analogy with the concluding lines to Biographia Literaria and to Opus Maximum Fragment 2, lines likewise taken as codas to their respective works. Building on Mays’ characterization of Coleridge’s ‘poetry of the affections’, and on his identification of the arc of Coleridge’s life as arising within the bosom of his father’s so-called ‘simple’ faith, navigating ‘strange seas of thought’, and coming home at the end to his own (more complicated) simplicity, it argues that one ‘Clew’ to Notebook 55 as coda to his work and life lies in the place the affections enjoy in Coleridge’s notebooks of 1827–34, whose entries most deeply constitute exercises in contemplation.

Although recognized as a student of Greek language and culture, Wilde also read Latin fluently and studied Roman history and literature. This knowledge is displayed in his thesis-length essay, ‘Historical Criticism’, written in 1879 but unpublished in his lifetime; it compares classical Greek and Roman historians, with about 90 per cent of the exposition devoted to the Greeks. Wilde’s truncated consideration of Roman historians like Livy and Tacitus in ‘Historical Criticism’ would have been amplified considerably if he had included more of the language and examples he drafted, as seen in the unquoted entries in his two Oxford notebooks and in the ‘Historical Criticism’ notebook. Allusions and mentions in Wilde’s letters and later works, from his poetry and journalism to critical essays and finally to De Profundis, also display the lifelong range of his references to Roman history, historians, and culture.

This article examines the notebook writings of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It explains that writings which could be classed as notebook material appear under other headings because Coleridge wrote them in the margins of books (marginalia) or on unbound sheets of paper. The article describes the contents, development, and structure of Coleridge's notebook writings. It suggests that the first user of the notebook was Coleridge himself because he considered them as his sole confidant, where he could write down the feelings he felt unable to share with others.

The poet John Keats trained as a surgeon at Guy’s Hospital, London while simultaneously making his way as a poet. This book focuses attention on an important but hitherto neglected manuscript: the notebook Keats maintained during this time, with the premise that in Keats’ medical Notebook exists a manuscript revealing both the true depth of the poet’s medical knowledge and the significant influence this exercised on his poetry. Reconstructing the lively medical world that played a formative role in Keats’ intellectual and imaginative development, this book explores the intriguing connections between Keats’ medical knowledge and his greatest poetry. It reveals that Keats’ two careers proved mutually enabling and enriching, with their co-existence contributing greatly to his success in both. Opening with a fully annotated edition of Keats’ medical Notebook newly transcribed from the manuscript, the book offers chapters on the provenance of Keats’ medical Notebook; the ‘hospital poems’ he wrote at Guy’s; the medical milieu of Keats’ daily life; his methods of working as revealed by his medical Notebook and other archival sources; and the medical contexts that informed his composition of Endymion and his 1820 volume, Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St Agnes, and Other Poems. It shows how the visceral knowledge of human life that Keats gained at Guy’s Hospital transformed him into the ‘mighty poet of the human heart’, with new research recovering the many ways in which Keats’ creativity found expression in both his careers.

Chapter 1 describes Ashbery’s relationship with W. H. Auden in a new way, attending as much to the substantial, productive antagonisms between the two poets as to developing important continuities outlined by earlier critics. It positions The Vermont Notebook—an underrated volume in Ashbery’s oeuvre—as the critical point in Ashbery’s response to his mentor. The chapter argues that The Vermont Notebook serves as a trenchant critique of the turn towards conservatism in Auden’s poetry and cultural outlook after his move to the US in 1939. Through his homage to and appropriation of techniques from The Orators, Ashbery attempts to bring the innovative and versatile early Auden out from the shadow of his later self.

The Second Pedagogical Notebook is a continuation of the first ‘notebook’, dedicated to the Urban Planning Research course. The course and the notebook were created by Prof. Ivana Šverko, with the aim of offering students of architecture in Split the basics of urban planning research in a Mediterranean context. The idea behind the pedagogical notebook is to contribute to the recognition of the research phase as an essential starting point in the entire, complicated process of urban planning and design, as well as an understanding of research methodologies in specific spatial and social conditions. One of the ideal real-world templates for realising this goal is Zrinsko- Frankopanska Street, which developed along one of the Split peninsula’s Roman centuriation lines. This street connects the historical southern city harbour with the newer, northern one. Zrinsko-Frankopanska is an exceptionally important city street, and along its length there are a range of buildings dating from the ancient period to the 21st century, with almost every historical period represented. It is here that the most diverse range of public facilities can be found. The students mapped, studied, and analysed this city street, using historical and morphological analysis of spatial connections, greenery, the relationship between the public and the private, the accessible and inaccessible spaces, purpose, urban equipment, and so on. In doing so, they also noted relevant everyday human activities such as disposing of rubbish, as well as things such as the position and content of graffiti. They also included morphography – the description of forms without reference to their sources and development process – in their analytical approach. After the research phase, the students were instructed to target the problems they detected by proposing improvements to the existing elements, or by redesigning them. They were also required to open up the possibility of alternate uses for the space, up to the point in the design process when an architect or designer would usually take over. By presenting the study of a specific segment in this book, we wish to help students consider the complexity of the urban tissue, define the basic urban elements, research development processes, the typological and morphological characteristics of constriction and, ultimately, to identify everything that constitutes the “urban space as a whole”. We wish to guide them so that with their unique knowledge and tools, and their inclusion of all the other relevant professions in the processes of urban planning, they can become architects with sound professional and ethical principles, and develop into a new generation of responsible city-builders.

It discusses the loss of Coleridge's notebook for the Lectures on the Principles of Poetry, which made it difficult to accurately assess his criticism on Shakespeare. The article suggests that the innovations of Coleridge's criticism came out of the depths of his own mind and years of thinking on the principles of poetry, while his close reading of Shakespeare provided him with the necessary figures, accidents, and minutiae to substantiate his claims.

The first reason is that Coleridge's oeuvre in English has only very recently been established through the long labours on the richly annotated Collected Coleridge, the Letters, and the Notebooks. Another reason is that Coleridge's relations with Europe have unusually been viewed through the other end of the lens: his own borrowings from European thinkers.

This chapter draws attention to Wilde’s methods of studying for his final examinations in Literæ Humaniores (or Greats) between 1876 and 1878, when he was an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford. It looks closely at the substantial document that scholars usually refer to as the ‘Philosophy’ notebook: a 350-page set of notes that range across many of the modern areas of disciplinary inquiry that the Greats student was expected to know in addition to classical history, philosophy, and literature. Using as an example Wilde’s notes on the concept of abstraction, the chapter traces his engagement with this idea in relation to such works as Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics, Mill’s System of Logic, Bain’s Mental and Moral Science, and Cairnes’s Essays in Political Economy. Throughout Wilde displays a truly dialectical turn of mind as he adopts different approaches to the logical process of abstraction: the condensing of complex particulars into general definitions.

This chapter presents the author's account of their search for the author of a handwritten cookbook that they purchased on eBay. It was a standard composition notebook filled with more than one hundred recipes, sprinkled with a few comments, along with some mathematical figures scribbled in open spots. They discovered that the cookbook author was one Ruth Ginsburg of St. Louis. On September 21, 1913, she married Isadore F. Dunie who, at the time, had been residing in the rich mining town of Leadwood, Missouri. After the birth of two children, the Dunie family moved to Hillsboro, Illinois. Additional research into census, birth, death, cemetery records, and the Missouri History Museum stacks, produced both concrete and tangential information about Ruth. Born around 1893, she emigrated from Lithuania in 1903 with her mother, Jennie, and six siblings, at the time when Eastern European Jewish migration was at its height.

This book on the use of mobile technology for flexible delivery is aimed at helping educators and trainers develop and implement mobile learning. Section I: an effusion of Orthodox religious feeling from teenage years. Sections II-VII: Around 1900, an expression of rejection of God in the face of disillusion is followed by the text of the choral finale of the First Symphony, declaring faith in the power of art. An unfinished opera libretto, symbolic in narrative, expressing belief in Art’s power to seduce and persuade. Three notebooks develop a world view in which the world is the result of the self’s creative activity. The creation of art and of the universe are identical. There is a higher self, identical with divinity. Forgetfulness of individuality leads to freedom and universal consciousness. Section VIII: The literary poem written during the composition of the symphonic Poem of Ecstasy summarises the scenario developed in the notebooks. Life starts with the desire to create, delight in creative play meets opposition, the creative goal is achieved and disappointment sets in. The process is repeated until it is realized that the struggle is itself joyful and self-affirmation is achieved. Section IX: The text of the Preliminary Action is symbolic in structure. Primal Male and Female Principles emerge; the Female is identified with Death. Life arises from the union of energies. Struggle and bloodshed follow. The conclusion is an impulse towards unification, the synthesis of experience and dematerialisation. Both the complete first draft and the incomplete revision are included.

He highlights a striking irony in Edwards’ exegesis by juxtaposing his steady criticism of the Roman Catholic Church against his high praise of Mary. Stein’s essay is driven by immersion in Edwards’ biblical notebooks, which gives readers a taste of Edwards’ engagement with the Bible and his subsequent theological development from that exegesis. Stein especially highlights how Edwards linked the Virgin Mary to the life of Jesus Christ and the larger story of salvation. Although this question clearly centers on the New Testament, Edwards brings Old Testament passages to bear on it, which illustrates his canonical approach to interpreting Scripture.

As the digital revolution takes hold, historians have begun to reflect on the ways in which paper technologies – the codex, notebook, printed book and their indexes, annotations and tools of ordering – have come into being and contributed to the production of knowledge. Objects that were once considered evidence for historical inquiry have become their subjects.1 The same reflexivity applies to notions of evidence, observation and objectivity, often labelled as facts and data, which have themselves been historically studied. This chapter is about what happens when historians use digital technologies to understand paper technologies. It draws on my work to digitise one of the largest surviving sets of medical records in history, a series of 80,000 seventeenth-century astrological cases bound in sixty-four thick volumes. I call this the Casebooks Project. This work, as this chapter explains, is an experiment in the history of medicine and digital humanities.3 It uses new digital technologies to understand what were, in the seventeenth century, new paper technologies. Questions of evidence and its representation and analysis are central to this endeavour.

This chapter explores the gendered practice and cultures of fieldwork through a critical examination of the life and work of the Irish Victorian natural scientist, Maude Delap (1866–1953). Drawing on previously unpublished primary sources such as field notebooks and other archival material from Delap’s scientific laboratory, the chapter offers a critical evaluation of the different registers of Delap’s ‘spaces’ in the study of natural history. In particular, it examines the interplay and crossover between private and public, between ‘inner’ spaces and the official spaces of the ‘built’ environment (from the domestic, laboratory, fieldwork, and international intellectual spheres), with regard to Delap’s contribution to Irish and European maritime cultures through her correspondence with various national and academic institutions, including the National Museum of Ireland, the Royal Irish Academy, and the University of London.

Charles E. Hambrick-Stowe gives us a window into Jonthan Edwards’ spiritual practices and how the Bible colored them. With his typological imagination, Edwards relished nature, but even there, his imaginative reflections connected what he perceived in nature with what he read in Scripture. The Bible also helped him sift through the thorny question of how one best understands experiential religion, straddling the means of grace and the free work of the Holy Spirit. His various notebooks reveal how extensively Scripture shaped Edwards’ spiritual and intellectual life. In practice, the Bible became the language of Edwards’ prayer and song, and it also guarded against misguided Enlightenment-era notions about experiencing God. To the end of his life, Scripture was a constant source of solace in Edwards’ spiritual journey.

Coleridge’s prose represents the trace and track of his mind in action. It records the intricate processes, the inner workshop of thinking and feeling: fertile, at times rapid, at times digressing, working not so much by direct lines as by sideways and encompassing motions, though always towards a goal, yet willing to put aside that goal, at least temporarily, for a richer one discovered on the way. In notebooks, letters, essays, criticism, journalism, religious and spiritual writing, in arguments against slavery and child labour—always displaying a wealth and love of words in their richness and distinctions (and coining many of his own that have entered the language)—his prose registers no formulated catechism of thought. He writes in multiple styles. His compositions embody a flexible method subsuming all his powers. Coleridge’s prose is an acquired taste but one worth acquiring.

This chapter excavates the natural strains in John Cage and Merce Cunningham’s composing and choreographic habits vis-à-vis animality. Cage and Cunningham reveal their recognition that the artistic is primarily about pleasure and affect, and that it is the animal part of us that responds most fully to such provocations. I read the little-known Cunningham book of drawings, Other Animals (2002), in the context of such ambitious performance pieces as Beach Birds (1991) and Ocean (1994). Cunningham’s propensity for drawing vibrantly colored animals in his notebooks links him back to Duncan, a founder of modern dance, who modeled her movement on the “free animals.” Moreover, specific illustrations in Other Animals are remarkably reminiscent of the depictions of animal hordes in Virginia Woolf’s Lugton tale. This chapter, therefore, allows me to trace the vibratory, excessive impulse of bioaesthetics from modernism to the early twenty-first century.

Chapter 17 concentrates on Coleridge’s theological reflections, especially those of his final years. In his later notebooks and other key works, including the ‘Theory of Life’ and Aids to Reflection, Coleridge yielded generally consistent results in terms of his efforts to define, desynonymize, and establish the ‘Order of the Mental Powers’. By 1830, with regard to the human being on Earth (or the earthly human ‘Personal Identity’), Coleridge had fleshed out his perception of the order of these powers in the context of what he called the ‘triple Ichheit’. Regarding Coleridge’s thought about the origins of and processes involved within contemplative acts, the chapter explores the ‘Order of the Mental Powers’ as Coleridge saw them within the context of the ‘triple Ichheit’; and it explains how this ordering related to Coleridge’s thought on God, the hypostases of the Trinity, and the relationships between ‘Will’, ‘Reason’, and faith.

Drawing from the archive of Beckett’s letters, vocabulary notebooks, and German Diaries, this chapter elaborates Beckett’s encounters with propaganda in Nazi Germany, and demonstrates how Watt formally performs the interpretative problems propaganda presents. The word games in the book make sense when read in light of Adorno’s claim that fascism first found a refuge in mystified language. The novel presents strategies by which the character Watt refuses to resist the mystification of power and the ideological seduction of Mr. Knott’s house. More, the book evokes and then dismisses recent and violent history by bringing to mind remnants of historical images from World War II. The formal games and near-autonomy of the entire work, combined with its Irish setting, threaten to override or erase such vestiges of history, as if literary form demonstrates the mechanics of propaganda itself, recontextualizing and diminishing the menacing image that it evokes.

The Talk of the Town explores everyday communication in a sixteenth-century small town and the role it played in the circulation of information across and within early modern communities. It does so through the lens of the St Gall linen trader Johannes Rütiner (1501–56/7) and his notebooks, the Commentationes––a little-known source which offers unusual insights into an oral world normally hidden from view. A close reading of Rütiner’s notes on hundreds of conversations reveals what the inhabitants of a sixteenth-century town talked about, through which channels such information reached them, and how it was then processed, shared, criticized, contradicted, and employed as a means to forge and strengthen social bonds. By bringing together the histories of sociability and information, reconstructing Rütiner’s network of informants and probing a broad variety of exchanges—jokes, gossip, news, and tales of the past—this book rethinks both what constituted valuable information in the sixteenth century and who was able to provide it, and argues that the circulation of information remained inseparably linked to the social dynamics of face-to-face exchanges long into the age of print.
