Engineers and scientists work together to develop solutions to structural problems. Given that nothing is absolutely and eternally safe, the goal is to attain an acceptably small probability of failure for a structure, a facility, or a situation. Reliability analysis is part of the science and practice of engineering today, not only with respect to the safety of structures, but also for questions of serviceability and other requirements of technical systems that might be impacted by some probability.<p>The present volume takes a rather broad approach to safety and reliability in Structural Engineering. It treats the underlying concepts of safety, reliability and risk and introduces the reader in a fi rst chapter to the main concepts and strategies for dealing with hazards. The next chapter is devoted to the processing of data into information that is relevant for applying reliability theory. Two following chapters deal with the modelling of structures and with methods of reliability analysis. Photon detectors transform information, carried by light, to an electrical analogue. Signals contain information on the time of occurrence and the intensity in terms of the number of photons involved. Photon rates may be constant with time, slowly varying, or transient in the form of pulses. The time response is specified in terms of some property of the pulse shape, such as its rise time, or it may be expressed in terms of bandwidth. Light detector applications fall into two categories: imaging and non-imaging; however, only the latter are considered. Detectors can be further divided into vacuum and solid state devices. Vacuum devices include photomultipliers (PMTs), microchannel plate PMTs (MCPPMTs), and hybrid devices in which a silicon device replaces the discrete dynode multiplier. As mobile devices became more affordable, people at all job levels started bringing their personal devices to work. All of a sudden, people saw workers whose jobs involved manual labor pull out their mobiles and tap away. There was an assumption that they were often cyberslacking—wasting work time on non-work tasks. This chapter introduces a group of janitors who were banned from using their personal devices at work. But their supervisors were stuck in an awkward place: sandwiched between needing to communicate face-to-face with their subordinates and being expected to be constantly reachable through multiple devices because that’s how their own managers communicated. The ban reinforced existing power structures; there were issues of trust, language barriers, computer literacy, and inconsistent enforcement of rules. This ban actually harmed productivity, and the findings suggest that these manual workers can use mobile devices productively: they still need access to on-the-job information.

Tensions on the plains increased as Americans, including Quaker reservation officials, put more pressures and restrictions on Kiowas and other Native peoples. Indians experienced hunger when rations failed to arrive. Diseases circulated with frequency. Attempts at farming withered in the sun. Quakers and other Protestants involved in the Peace Policy continued to celebrate the humanitarian impulse behind their work. Kiowas and their allies, on the other hand, devised plans for pushing Americans out of their homelands. Some invoked dreams and visions that inspired attacks on Americans. By 1874, the region was at war as Kiowas, Comanches, Cheyenne, and Arapahos orchestrated a pan-Indian revolt. The Americans, however, crushed their effort. The Red River War, as well as other Indian-American conflicts, left Quakers and other Peace Policy supporters searching for reasons to justify the nation’s policy of putting religious representatives at the forefront of Indian affairs.

This chapter examines the concept of a justification narrative. Such a concept serves as a heuristic device to connect the normative dimension of justification that aims at rational persuasion with the dimension of socially effective justifications which are recognized and practiced by those involved as persuasive and are constituted by their respective experiences and expectations. Justification narratives are regarded as embodiments of contextual rationality. In them, images, individual stories, rituals, facts, and myths are condensed into powerful grand narratives that serve as a resource for generating a sense of order. Insofar as normative orders are framed in narratives, they have a special binding power and authority; they acquire historical significance and at the same time the emotional power to inspire identification.

By the mid-1950s, a linear accelerator suitable for treating deep-seated tumors was built in the Stanford Microwave Laboratory and installed at Stanford Hospital. It served as a prototype for commercial units that were built later. Since that time, medical linear accelerators gained in popularity as major radiation therapy devices, but few basic training materials on their operation had been produced for use by medical professionals. C.J. Karzmark, a radiological physicist at Stanford University, was involved with medical linacs since their development, and he agreed to collaborate with Robert Morton of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (formerly the Bureau of Radiological Health), U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in writing the first edition of this primer. Since its first appearance, this book has become a classic. This third edition takes into account the significant advances occurring in radiotherapy linacs since the second edition was published in 1998. Again, the level of treating these advances is simplified so that the audience of radiation therapists as well as physicians, engineers, and physicists can benefit.

This essay examines the adoption of and the indifference to the term “Anthropocene” in diverse discourses addressing the urgency of climate change in the early twenty-first century. Through an analysis of keynote speeches, this essay argues that Anthropocene—a storytelling device invoking a pan-human species responsibility for the current climate crisis—is deployed widely within Euro-Australo-American academic environmental studies and environmental politics, but has not gained political or epistemic traction in environmental justice and climate justice organizations and social movements. Challenging the underlying universalism, anti-humanism, and cynicism woven into Anthropocene discourse, activists from environmental justice, climate justice, and indigenous organizations do not invoke Anthropocene’s rhetoric of humans as destroyers or masters of nature. Rather, these groups provide examples of “people powered” regenerative politics based on life-enhancing political strategies and proactive organizing in support of a just transition toward renewable energy, local economies, and socially and ecologically sustainable communities.

Fungal cardiovascular disease can broadly be divided into four groups: infective endocarditis (including implantable cardiac electronic devices), mycotic aneurysms, vascular graft infections, and intravascular catheter-related infections. These conditions are rare but are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, which may be in excess of 80% in certain groups of patients. Candida spp. and Aspergillus spp. account for the majority of these infections, but rare fungi may also be involved, particularly in infective endocarditis, where they are responsible for approximately 25% of cases. This chapter will cover the epidemiology, causative fungi, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and prevention of these four fungal cardiovascular conditions.

Considering the role of cognitive frameworks in international relations, this chapter uses the so-called ‘Rashomon effect’ as a heuristic device, showing how different views and accounts of effective multilateralism and global governance can coexist as contested discourses and practices, and how they shape expectations, roles, and practices of the actors and policies involved. The chapter presents Latin American perspectives of multilateralism and global governance, analysing its narrative and discursive logics. In a marked contrast with the US ‘hegemonic’ and the EU ‘normative’ approaches, Latin American views respond to the ‘defensive’ and/or ‘revisionist’ approaches, narratives, and discourses of the Global South, with specific regionalist and nationalist features grounded in its particular historical background and political culture. The chapter also examines how these views and narratives are challenged by deep changes in power structures in the international system, demanding a common framework.

This chapter discusses the role of the gods, with emphasis on divine intervention as a compositional device. Of the cyclic epics, the Cypria shows the greatest divine activity, with many parallels to the Iliad in the range and function of divine interventions, though the notion of a controlling “will of Zeus” added much irony to the basic scheme. However, it is the Aethiopis that shows a clearer parallel to the Iliad in its mixture of divine aid and divine conflict. The other poems of the Cycle show a much closer affinity to the Odyssey. Divine intervention is used sparingly, with relatively few gods being involved; divine conflict is less emphasized; and gods mainly serve to inspire, advise, or hinder heroes to provide direction to the narrative. Also included is a discussion of the much freer use of prophecies and omens in the Cycle as compared with Homer.

As personal and solitary as it may be, the process of composition always implies more than one individual and has many collective dimensions. This chapter presents an ethnographic account of the collective process involved in creating a work for ‘augmented string quartet’ at IRCAM from 2006 to 2008. It addresses three primary concerns: the composer–performer interaction and the role of musical notation; the relationship between artistic creativity and reflexivity; and the sharing of skills and expertise across disciplines. The project led not only to a new musical work, but also to a technological device for ‘gesture-following’ (including customised motion sensors and innovative software), scientific papers, and new expertise in computer music design for future projects involving motion capture. These patterns of distributed creativity are essential to ‘musical research’ as a collective endeavour, and are present in many other circumstances of contemporary or traditional composition and performance.

Patients are best followed in multidisciplinary ALS clinics where a number of medical experts can address a wide range of symptoms. Additional studies are needed to develop evidenced-based best practice guidelines to further improve care for patients with ALS. Bulbar dysfunction eventually affects the vast majority of ALS patients, and progressive dysphagia results from weakness and spasticity of the muscles involved in swallowing. Dysphagia is associated with increased risk of aspiration and choking, as well as with long-term risk of malnutrition, weight loss, and dehydration. Appropriate measures to enhance caloric intake contribute to a greater sense of well-being. Augmentative communication devices and ventilator support can also be used to reduce suffering.

Those pidgins did not inherit the morphological complexity of the source languages, but instead use pronouns for person marking and largely analytic structures. Sometimes unanalyzed complex verbs are used, where the original meaning of the affixes does not play a role. The widespread idea that polysynthetic languages do not display lexical borrowings, but use internal word-building devices instead, should be qualified: loanwords are quite common in polysynthetic languages. In codeswitching, verbs stems rarely combine with foreign elements. Borrowing of pattern is more common than borrowing of matter, and areal diffusion of grammatical traits may lead to the proliferation of polysynthesis.

For this analysis it invokes a philosophical tradition that stretches from Aristotle to Toulmin and Gadamer. Second, it takes up technology as achievement, the most obvious example of which is psychotropic medications. For this dimension of technology in psychiatry it recruits philosopher Albert Borgmann, who has analyzed the tendency of technological products, analyzed as device paradigms, to transmute into commodities. Finally, the chapter takes up technology as instrument of investigation. Philosopher Don Ihde is the guide in this investigation into how the psychiatrically real can become what is revealed through the technological instrument. The final section addresses the overarching question of how to set the right balance between the technological and the non-technological in psychiatry-how psychiatry can make use of technology without losing its humanistic core. It notes that the binary of the technological and non-technology in psychiatry can be mapped onto other binaries: biology and psychology, mind and brain, medication and psychotherapy, diagnosis and patient, theory and instance, general and individual, technical and practical reason. These binaries are not precisely isomorphic with each other, but all contribute to evaluating the role of technology in psychiatry, both in the present and in the desired future.

Smartphones and other mobile devices virtually accompany families through all aspects of their everyday existence. The growing sophistication of mobile communication has unleashed a proliferation of apps, channels, and platforms that link parents to their children and key institutions in their lives. Throughout every stage of their children’s development, from infancy to adolescence to emerging adulthood, mobile communication plays an increasingly critical role in family life. Transcendent parenting has emerged in light of significant transformations in the mobile media landscape that allow parents to transcend many realms: the physical distance between them and their children, their children’s offline and online social interaction spaces, as well as timeless time that renders parenting duties ceaseless. In mobile communication, parents parent all over and all of the time, whether their children are by their side or out of sight. Drawing on experiences of urban middle-class families in Asia, this book shows how transcendent parenting embodies and conveys parenting priorities in these households. Paramount are the inculcation of values in their children, oversight of children to protect them from harm, adverse influences, and supporting their children in academic endeavors. It explores how mobile communication allows parents to be more involved than ever in their children’s lives but also questions whether parents have become too involved as a result. Specialization in medicine grew in popularity after World War II when federal grants stimulated research into organ-specific diseases and the development of new diagnostic and treatment technologies. Mayo Clinic’s time-honored model of care involved having every internal medicine specialist devote significant time to general diagnosis. Mayo’s cardiologists produced a strategic plan in 1964 in which they expressed concern that this philosophy compromised their role as heart specialists. In 1965 Mayo’s internal medicine training program came under fire from a national group that insisted that it conform to the standard academic medical center model. This resulted in the creation of a Department of Medicine, which reduced the autonomy and influence of subspecialty sections such as cardiology. In 1969 Mayo decided to seek philanthropic support to help launch a medical school and to support its research and training programs. Despite Mayo’s changing structure, its main focus remained patient care rather than research.

Only purely epistemic properties affect its correct application—not the interests of agents or those who attribute the word to agents. These properties enable “know” to be applied correctly—as it routinely is—to cognitive agents ranging from sophisticated human knowers, who engage in substantial metacognition, to various animals, who know much less and do much less, if any, metacognition, to nonconscious mechanical devices such as drones, robots, and the like. These properties of the word “know” suffice to explain the usage phenomena that contextualists and subject-sensitive invariantists invoke to place pressure on an understanding of the word that treats its application as involving no interests of agents, or others. It is also shown that the factivity and the fallibilist-compatibility of the word “know” explain Moorean paradoxes, the preface paradox, and the lottery paradox. A fallibility-sensitive failure of knowledge closure is given along with a similar failure of rational-belief closure. The latter explains why rational agents can nevertheless believe A and B, where A and B contradict each other. A substantial discussion of various kinds of metacognition is given—as well as a discussion of the metacognition literature in cognitive ethology. An appendix offers a new resolution of the hangman paradox, one that turns neither on a failure of knowledge closure nor on a failure of KK.

In the later eighteenth century the West Indian sugar islands were a source of conspicuous wealth for some individuals and an important addition to the resources of Great Britain. They were generally reckoned to be the most valuable of Britain’s imperial possessions, a view which Burke fully endorsed. This book examines his long involvement with the West Indies, at a personal level through the ambitions of his brother and some of his closest friends, as a politician and what contemporaries called ‘a man of business’ in the management of a great national asset and in trying to win the support of powerful West Indian interests for his political connection. He became a participant in debates about the ethics of enslavement and the slave trade. Burke deplored both slavery and the trade, but he recognized that the plantation economy of the West Indies depended on them and that therefore they played a crucial role in Britain’s immensely valuable Atlantic commerce. The policies that he advocated for the further development of the West Indian and African trades inevitably involved more enslaved Africans in the British Empire and on occasions he was drawn into implicitly endorsing the slave trade. Except for a few years from 1788 to 1791, Burke was not prepared to countenance immediate abolition of the trade, but he did devise a comprehensive plan for reforming both it and the institution of slavery, that in the very long term would make both redundant.

Theorising and researching these problems involves questioning the processes of lacking or insufficient regulation, absent or ineffective enforcement, resulting harms, and broader issues of governance, corruption, and justice. Due to the contemporary corporatisation of food and the subsequent distancing of humans from foodstuffs and food systems, not only is it important to think criminologically about food, but the criminological study of food may help make criminology relevant today.

This portfolio documents two related pratice-led, colour research projects at the Royal Edinburgh Mental Health Hospital. This practice-led colour research employed architectural design knowledge and emerging on-site evidence to devise colour schemes and to make site-specific wall paintings within shared areas and circulation spaces. Project 1 took place in ‘Pentland’ dementia ward from February 2017 – February 2018, and Project 2 involved the main corridor and Andrew Duncan Clinic reception area from April – November 2019. Although guidance is available for care homes and hospitals, it appears to be applied often without professional design input that can take into account light conditions, views in and out, and the social and cultural setting. Observations included monitoring the sun path, light quality, and room usage. Hand sketches were effective in communicating the conceptual ideas with large test panels of candidate paint colours. Newsletters at regular intervals kept staff, visitors and carers informed of the project and invited questions. Two themes emerged, namely ‘destinations’ and ‘directions’. Carers emphasised a need for spaces that are more homely and sophisticated, and small places within the circulation areas where patients can sit with their relatives. Feedback from the users indicated that a strong red and patterned wall panel seemed to act as a beacon and be sufficiently memorable to direct the patients at the most confusing intersections. Incidents (conflicts and arguments) were substantially reduced since the installation. Patients would sit with relatives in the circulation areas, as well as within private rooms. Staff reported that the dispersal of the patients around the ward may have diffused tensions, and therefore reduced the number of incidents between patients and staff. The work has been disseminated through peer-reviewed written output while the colour design is experienced on a daily basis by the hospital community. The projects have been disseminated through academic outputs that challenge the prevailing ‘tick box’ approach to the use of colour in health care environments.

It demonstrates that the structure, ethos, and works that de Paul devised for the Congregation placed it at the heart of a significant enterprise of reform that involved a broad set of associates in efforts to transform the character of devotional belief and practice within the church. The book’s central questions concern de Paul’s efforts to create, characterize, and articulate a distinctive and influential vision for missionary life and work, both for himself and for the Lazarist Congregation, and it argues that his prominence and achievements depended on his remarkable ability to exploit the potential for association and collaboration within the dévot environment of seventeenth-century France in enterprising and systematic ways. It is the first study to assess de Paul’s activities against the backdrop of religious reform and Bourbon rule, and to reconstruct the combination of ideas, practices, resources, and relationships that determined his ability to pursue his ambitions.

Navigate The Blood is an 80-minute opera conceived by Gareth Williams, co-composed by Williams and Admiral Fallow, with a libretto by Sian Evans. The work aims to find new partners, participants, collaborators and audiences for contemporary opera in Scotland, by developing a new methodology for creating work in this genre. The work was developed at NOISE Opera between 2015 and 2018, and produced in partnership with Glasgow Distillery, where the premiere took place on 2 November 2018. The work toured throughout November 2018 and 40% of the audience who attended performances were new to opera. Williams, opera composer and musical director of NOISE Opera, invited the indie folk band Admiral Fallow to collaborate on a concept opera that explored the industry and community of distilling in Scotland. After a series of research trips, interviews with distillers across Scotland, musical workshops, and readings of the libretto, a process was devised to mentor the new operamakers (Admiral Fallow) through the process of co-creating opera, creating a common language across the genres of indie folk/pop and opera, during the writing of this music theatre work. Through a new partnership with Glasgow Distilleries, seven distilleries across Scotland were secured as performance venues, and the whisky/gin making communities of Scotland were consulted and involved in the process of creating the libretto for the work. The work was performed in distilleries across Scotland: Glasgow Distillery, Oban Distillery, Glen Scotia Distillery, Campeltown, Ardnahoe Distillery, Islay, Blair Atholl Distillery, Pitlochry, Lost Loch Distillery, Aboyne, Summerhall Edinburgh and La Taverna Aviemore. The completed score is a collaborative document, where Williams placed the work of Admiral Fallow songwriters, Louis Abbot and Sarah Hayes, into the framework of the opera, alongside his own music, blending the different voices, gestures, genres and timbres into a cohesive, singular, dramatic piece.
