Political truth is never neutral, objective or absolute – that’s why it’s political. The normative realisation of democratic politics depends upon the communicability of intersubjective perspectives rather than the quest for capital-T Truth. Three key principles of political communication are set out that might strengthen the quality of intersubjective political judgment: the principle of social curiosity; the principle of collective interpretation; and the principle of working through disagreement. The article concludes by considering debates about political truth surrounding the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 and the need to respond to such tragedy through intersubjective judgment.

This essay presents an emerging conception of truth and shows how it appropriates Herman Dooyeweerd’s conception. First I compare my “critical hermeneutics” with other reformational models of critique. Then I propose to think of truth as a dynamic correlation between (1) human fidelity to societal principles and (2) a life-giving disclosure of society. This conception recontextualizes the notion of propositional truth, and it links questions of intersubjective validity with Dooyeweerd’s emphasis on “standing in the truth.” While abandoning his idea of transcendent truth, I seek to preserve the holism and normativity of Dooyeweerd’s radical conception. Theoretical thought never finishes its task. Anyone who believes to have created a philosophical system that can be adopted unchanged by every ensuing generation shows no insight into the historical contingency [gebondenheit] of all theoretical thought. — Herman Dooyeweerd1

Martin Buber denied consistently that he was a theologian because he repudiated abstract discourse about God. However, he did affirm that intersubjective events in the world express theological truth, even if that truth cannot be possessed or professed thereafter as noetic content. In this paper I introduce a concept of “embodied theology” to elucidate this nuance in Buber’s religious thought, and I show how his Ḥasidic writings shed unique light on these matters. Through hermeneutical investigations of his Ḥasidic tales vis-à-vis the original sources, I illuminate Buber’s conviction that genuine sages convey theological meaning through the very spiritual-corporeal dynamics of their lives—or what Buber calls their “sacramental existence.”

Analyst and patient occasionally arrive at moments of heightened meaning and aliveness. These moments can be transformative and lead to psychic change in the patient. They give life and arouse hope, and feel “real” in a new way, though often entailing emotional turbulence. Specific internal work must be done by the analyst to allow for and foster these experiences. This involves a kind of mourning process in the analyst that allows for “presence” and “availability” as described by Gabriel Marcel, and for the “at-one-ment” described by Bion. These transforming moments can be viewed in an aesthetic realm, along the lines of Keats’s “Beauty is truth, truth beauty.” This embodies the analytic value of emotional truth. These moments are shared and their emergence is an intersubjective creation. Clinical illustrations show how the internal work of mourning by the analyst through directed introspection allows for presence and availability, and then for shared moments of beauty with the patient.

Abstract The commentary as a journalistic genre that presents and comments on current events is characterized by intersubjective positioning, whereby the author constructs meaning, seeking alignment or, on the contrary, expressing disalignment with a putative audience. In line with the appraisal theory as developed by Martin and White (2005), which follows the Bakhtian dialogic perspective, according to which utterances and propositions are intersubjectively charged, the paper aims to describe the linguistic means of engagement, one of the central elements of this theory. Engagement is concerned with how the author expresses authorial voice and how s/he negotiates meaning with the readers, opening up (dialogic expansion) or, on the contrary, closing the dialogic space (dialogic contraction). In this sense, the linguistic means of engagement, such as modality, hedging and boosting devices, evidentiality, are understood to transcend the functions attributed to them within a truth-conditional framework, namely epistemic status and reliability of knowledge, and are seen as means by which the author entertains or rejects alternative voices and opinions. Taking this into consideration, the paper intends to analyse a few selected commentaries on the war situation in Ukraine found on the online platform of The Rand Corporation, a global policy think tank that performs research and conducts evaluations of various topics. It analyses the linguistic means of dialogic positioning, focusing on how the authors negotiate the dialogic space with the audience; while presumably all forms of intersubjective positioning can be found in the texts, it is expected that certain forms of engagement will outnumber others. As all commentaries can be found on the website of the above mentioned corporation, the question also arises as to what extent commentaries show similarity with respect to engagement, thereby expressing, albeit indirectly, a certain standpoint with respect to the Ukrainian warfare.

The idea of post-truth, although the phrase itself has its previous use, has become fashionable in the last five years and after being declared the "word of the year" in the Oxford Dictionary. The author of the paper examines the limits of theoretical fertility of this concept, placing it first in the context of truth theories, and then determining its specific theoretical weight. In the exposition of his consideration of this concept, he uses the comparative-phenomenological method and interprets its definitions in a critical-reflexive approach. Uncritical acceptance of the validity of the conceptual description of post-truth leads to the illusion that we have entered a new post-epoch that is something objective and inevitable, organized not on argumentation but on playing with other people's feelings. Of course, there is something in the idea of post-truth: the state of post-truth must be nothing new, if its realization did not include an exponentially developed communication technique, to which manipulative postmodern subjectivity stands as a subject a never before. On the whole, the phenomenon of post-truth belongs to a wider group of phenomena such as fake news and many others, which united together form a huge potential for falsifying the experience of reality. Finally, when the idea of post-truth according to its elements is included in a broader structure, it becomes calculable both in the history of ideas and in the interpretation of concrete events within intersubjective relations. The author believes that the path to truth, if there is truth, leads through the theoretical negation of this ideological intervention. The aim of this paper is to show that, when it comes to post-truth, it is a phenomenon that does not have its own independent existence.

The article considers the mechanisms of assimilation of new knowledge in science - scientific communication (in particular, scientific discussion), justification, understanding. Scientific communication gives the results of individual cognitive acts a universal and necessary character. In scientific discussions, arguments are accumu-lated for the scientific community to choose more promising knowledge, and prerequisites for the recognition of new knowledge are formalized. Justification acts as a mechanism for giving knowledge an intersubjective character. As a result of establishing the conformity of new knowledge to those elements of science, the truth of which has already been proved, and checking the new knowledge for compliance with the criteria of truth and methodological regulators, the characteristics of the foundation – the truth and effectiveness of established knowledge, the characteristics of scientificity – are transferred to the new, justifiable knowledge. nderstanding is the mechanism of assimilation, which ensures the harmonization, conformity of new and old knowledge. Representation of the meaning of knowledge objects in content coincides with its introduction into already exist-ing more general scientific systems, for example, in a discipline, branch of knowledge, which ensures the har-monization of new and old knowledge.

This paper will elaborate the different Platonic elements of dialogue as philosophical basis for Gadamerian hermeneutical structures. The intersubjective cross-examination found in Plato’s Dialogue shows that the real meaning comes from the real encounters between speakers; or in Gadamer’s term: encounters between text and the reader. For Gadamer, it is always important in this pursuit of meaning and truth that we examine our own prejudice. Cross-examining our own claim of truth and belief is an essential element in Gadamer’s hermeneutics. I argue that we can see how the Platonic model of dialogue is easily aligned with the Gadamerian positive approach towards ‘traditions.’ There is a constant dialogue at work in interpretation, a dialogue between the past and the present, between different traditions and points of view. Dialogue is an important keyword for both Plato and Gadamer in their efforts to their existential quest of wisdom.

Given the relevant role of the communicative interaction in the restorative justice model, this thesis has focused on knowing and understanding the process of truth construction in the practices of intra-judicial restorative criminal justice, taking into consideration the situations of inequality and epistemic injustices that may appear in this process, and determining the conditions that this device must fulfil to achieve an epistemically equitable and fair legal decision. The study carried out leads to the conclusion that the process of truth construction in restorative justice is of an intersubjective nature, in line with intersubjective theories of truth. In this process, the communicative exchange between the parties concerned is at the core, where the agreement is not the essential to achieve the aim of the restorative process, namely reparation. And an intersubjective process of truth construction focuses on the conditions of validity of the interaction between people. Thus, in the restorative justice process, an effective communicative interaction must fulfil the necessary conditions of epistemic fairness and justice. Hence, the legal decision can be considered more fair and equitable

This investigation can be described as a long journey to a final destination: a truth in religion. We start by considering dualism of the subjective and the objective, the classical model of cognition that underlies notions of truth. Dualistic notions of cognition lead to serious problems, especially for religious truth. Religions claim to state truths about the nature of the universe and human destiny, but these truths are incompatible. With a dualistic model this problem of diversity of religious truths leads to fundamentalism or relativism. Thus, this research aims to turn to the roots of the cognitive situation and investigate the way we cognize and relate to the world to provide a better model. As we consider the philosophical theories and empirical investigations of cognition, we come to the conclusion that dualism of the subjective and objective is not tenable. As the findings of contemporary mind sciences and phenomenologically oriented research indicate, human cognition is embodied, embedded, enacted, extended, and shaped by language. Thus, I propose to re-conceptualize the cognitive situation to provide a better philosophical account. I put forward a tripartite model of cognition, which unites language, action, and environment. The consequent application of this model to the issues of truth and religion shows that we can avoid the problem of diversity of truth claims. A tripartite model allows us to explain how we can maintain religion as true, despite the diversity of religious truth claims. Additionally, as this model is fundamental, its application leads to various new findings and inferences, which render anew the world and the way humans relate to it. Thus, our journey brings us to new frontiers of investigation.

This chapter considers what it means to be seen and looked at as a Black girl. Building on the visual-poetic analysis of June Jordan's (1969) Who Look at Me and M. NourbeSe Philip's (2008) Zong!, the chapter offers an “anti-narrative photo-poem” that couples photography, poetry, and intersubjective insights of Black girlhood to specifically address the institutional norms and interpersonal dynamics that govern their lives and promote a limited knowing of Black girls premised on sight alone. The primary purpose of this chapter is to show that Black girls actively decide who and what is worthy of their presence and attention. The anti-narrative photo-poem invites those who dare to look to answer with action, as June Jordan suggested, but to do so while giving attention to the kinds of nuanced intersubjective interactions that hinge on the particular usable truth that Black girls are looking at you, watching them.

The capacity to speak is not only the ability to pronounce words, but is the socially recognized capacity to make one’s words count in various ways. We rely on this capacity whenever we tell another person something and expect to be believed, and what we learn from others in this way is the basis for most of what we take ourselves to know about the world. The Exchange of Words is a philosophical exploration of human testimony, specifically as a form of intersubjective understanding in which speakers communicate by making themselves accountable for the truth of what they say. This account weaves together themes from philosophy of language, moral psychology, action theory, and epistemology, for a new approach to this fundamental human phenomenon. The account concentrates on the difference between what may be revealed in one’s speech (like a regional accent) and what we explicitly claim and make ourselves answerable for. Some prominent themes include the meaning of sincerity in speech, the nature of mutuality and how it differs from “mind reading,” the interplay between the first-person and the second-person perspectives in conversation, and the nature of the speech act of illocution as developed by philosophers such as J. L. Austin and Paul Grice. Ordinary dialogue is the locus of a kind of intersubjective understanding that is distinctive to the transmission of reasons in human testimony, and The Exchange of Words is an original and integrated account of this basic way of being informative and in touch with one another.

Cinematic Encounters with Disastertakes Hollywood’s disaster movies and their codified versions of natural disaster, post-apocalyptic survival, and extra-terrestrial threat as the starting point for an analytical trajectory that works toward new understandings of how cinema shapes and informs our conceptions of disaster and catastrophe. It examines a range of films from distinct regional and industrial contexts: Hollywood, indie movies, different kinds of documentaries from the US and elsewhere, and auteurist-realist cinema from Europe and Asia. Moving across and beyond critical and industrial categories that often inform thinking about cinema, this book contends that different approaches to film style can push us to imagine disaster in distinct ways, with distinct ethical connotations. Framed by contemporary concerns around the global climate crisis and the advent of the Anthropocene, questions about how films can best offer responses to historical exigency guide the book’s explorations of spectacular 2010s blockbusters likeGravity(2013) andSan Andreas(2015), environmental documentaries including the paradigmaticAn Inconvenient Truth(2006), post-disaster films by auteurs including Abbas Kiarostami and Lav Diaz, and more. Conceiving of disaster as intersubjective ethics between humans and nonhuman alterity – forces of nature, errant technology, monsters, ghosts, and other entities – it analyses how formal techniques and narrative strategies render encounters in which human protagonists are confronted with the threat of death and respond in ways that can be instructive for our planet’s present juncture.

Bakhtin as a philosopher and a student of the novel is intent upon the novel’s role in the history of consciousness. His project fails if he is wrong about the dialogic nature of consciousness or the cultural centrality of the novel as the only discourse that can model human consciousness and its intersubjective character. Inventing the Novel is an argument in four stages: the Introduction surveys Bakhtin’s life and his theoretical work in the 1920s, which grounded his work on the novel, as investigated in following chapters. Chapter 1 sketches Bakhtin’s view of literary history as an agonistic dialogue of genres, concluding with his claim that the novel originates as a new way of evaluating time. Chapter 2 explores Bakhtin’s theory of chronotopes: how do forms of time and space in ancient fiction delimit the possible representation of the human? Chapter 3 assesses Bakhtin’s poetics of genre in his account of Menippean satire as crucial in the history of the novel. Chapter 4 uses Petronius to address the prosaics of the novel, exploring Bakhtin’s account of how novelists of “the second stylistic line” orchestrate the babble of voices expressive of an era into “a microcosm of heteroglossia,” focusing it through the consciousness of characters “on the boundary” between I and thou. Insofar as this analysis succeeds, it evinces the truth of Bakhtin’s claim that the role of Petronius’s Satyrica in the history of the novel is “immense.”

AbstractDesign needs language and text so that it can be negotiated intersubjectively and become capable of connection to other academic disciplines. Texts, however, do not objectively reflect realities but rather bring them forth through their own medium: academic, journalistic, essayistic, and literary texts afford very particular ways of viewing the world. Scientific truths are produced narratively as well—at least from the constructivist perspective. This is particularly the case for the texts of design ethnography, in which a story-telling quality is inherent and which may take on subjectivist perspectives. These aspects of design ethnography must be consciously reflected in the process.

Abstract Facts and truths are termed “objective,” and so are beliefs. There are three strands to our ordinary notion of an objective fact or truth. First, an objective fact is accessible from different angles. It can be repeated by the same sense (sight, touch, etc.) at different times, and it can be repeated by different senses of one observer, and by different observers. The second mark of an objective truth, related to the first, is that there is or can be intersubjective agreement about it. And the third feature concerns independence. If p is an objective truth, then it holds independently of people’s beliefs, desires, hopes, and observations or measurements that p. A fourth and more fundamental characteristic of objective truths underlies and explains the first three features (to the extent that they hold): an objective fact is invariant under all admissible transformations. Which transformations are the admissible ones, for instance, Lorentz transformations, is discovered in the course of the history of scientific investigation.1

Pitigliano is the birthplace of Giannetto Paggi (1852–1916), a Jewish teacher who opened the first Italian school in Tripoli and was celebrated as ‘the pioneer of Italian civilization in Libya’ in the colonial and Fascist decades. The chapter considers the mobility of memory as a series of intersubjective and translational processes. It draws on Luisa Passerini’s concept of intersubjectivity, Naomi Leite’s ethnography of affinity and Francesco Ricatti’s ‘emotion of truth’ to engage with the processes of identification and knowledge exchange that emerged through the fieldwork. Spadaro explores the webs of imaginative and emotional interconnections linking her interviewees with the stories of Giannetto Paggi and Pitigliano, and, by extension, with narratives of Italianness and Jewishness across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Abstract Sellars aims in this essay (a) to demonstrate that the moral “ought” expresses a specific kind of intention, and (b) to demonstrate the objectivity and intersubjectivity of the moral point of view. Sellars demonstrates that we can and do reason among intentions in means-ends reasoning, but that such individual intentions lack crucial features of the moral “ought.” Sellars introduces we-intentions as a solution to this problem. He then argues that there is an intrinsically reasonable we-intention (It shallwe be the case that our general welfare is maximized); other moral we-intentions are categorically reasonable if they are validly derivable from this former intention. The moral point of view is the point of view of rational beings generally; and the moral “ought” is fully intersubjective: Moral judgments apply to all rational beings, can contradict each other, are capable of truth and falsity, and there is a decision procedure which can establish the truth of a given moral judgment.

The chapter comments on Tiyanjana Maluwa’s analysis of the contestation of value-based norms. It first, referring to the metaphor of the ‘eyes of the beholder’ and the song by Metallica with the same title, answers the question ‘Do I see what you see?’ Second, it is interested in coming closer to an intersubjective ‘truth’, that is a shared understanding for determining the alleged erosion of international law or the value-based legal norms of the United Nations (UN) Charter. By focusing on one of Maluwa’s case studies, it illustrates how conceptual choices may predetermine findings. In other words, they guide ‘into what you read’. Finally, it argues in favour of being more explicit about these choices to let others ‘see what I see’ and therefore to be transparent about the type and form of contestation one seeks to explain.

The debate of application of research philosophy in social science research is trending. One side takes the positivism while another side depends on interpretivism, some other believes critical realism and the rest stand with pragmatism. Yet, the understanding on and interpretation of ontological argument and epistemological positioning of the pragmatism is criticized. Accordingly, the authors are motivated to critically argue that gap with empirical research evidence from management disciplines in Sri Lanka. The pragmatism followers contend that all beliefs, knowledge, and scientific concepts are provisional and defined by their practical application in ongoing experience, not by their correspondence with antecedent truth or reality (Carlsen and Mantere, 2007). Hence, recent social sciences studies are rooted in pragmatic ideas, practice-based approaches thereby harvesting the intersubjective knowledge. When Greville makes the unconventional choice to dedicate his literary collection to a dead poet—Philip Sidney—he radically casts into question received conventions of speaking for and about other authors. While maintaining in the Dedication his lifelong Calvinist distrust of human agency, Greville also authorizes his account of Sidney’s deeds and words by claiming to know the truth about his friend’s “motives” and “intents.” It is an interpretive conundrum exacerbated by his commitment to write in the literary plain style with its artful pose of artless familiaritas. This chapter shows how the compound ambivalence of the Dedication on the topic of literary tradition—the question of how Greville’s reception of Sidney will be received in turn by Greville’s own imagined readers—exemplifies a broader cultural tension between the growing trust in the force of authorial character on reader understanding and yet a new skepticism about the very possibility of intersubjective communication.

The article discusses the representation of truth and falsity in the Netflix show Clickbait (2021), utilising its diegesis to review Greimas’ (1983) Veridiction Contract and Keyes’ (2004) text on Post-truth. A show presenting a commentary on the various challenges the digital substance poses to the construction and sanction of truth, the analysis of selected sequences facilitates the debate of two facets of truth-making in the digital transition: the manipulation of discursive substances—verbal language and iconic representation—and the emergence of a modality of truth anchored in the corporeality of subjects. The analysis approaches digital platforms and the intersubjective relations they enable and the extent to which different substances are capable of producing separate levels of reality. The examination of the crisis of truth emerging from the clash between “real life” and life post-digital transition permits the interrogation of mechanisms of sanction, which are replaced with an artificial enlargement of attention.
