Digital signal interpolation systems can be implemented in a variety of ways. The most basic interpolation system for integer upsampling cascades an expander unit with an interpolation low-pass filter. More complex implementations can cascade multiple expander and low-pass filter pairs. There is also flexibility in the design of interpolation filters. This thesis explores how digital interpolation systems for integer upsampling can be efficiently implemented. Efficiency is measured in terms of the number of multiplications required for each output sample point. The following factors are studied for their effect on system efficiency: the decomposition of an interpolation system into multiple cascaded stages, the use of recursive and non-recursive interpolation filters, and the use of linear-phase and minimum-phase interpolation filters. In this thesis interpolation systems are designed to test these factors, and their computational costs are calculated. From this data, conclusions are drawn about efficient designs of interpolation systems for integer upsampling.

Повний текст джерелаThe thesis makes an in-depth study of one of the classical problems in RF circuit design,the problem of impedance matching. Matching problem addresses the issue of transmitting the maximum available power from a source to a load within a frequency band. Antennas are one of the classical devices in which impedance matching plays an important role. The design of a matching circuit for a given load primarily amounts to find a lossless scattering matrix which when chained to the load minimize the reflection of power in the total system.In this work, both the theoretical aspects of the broadband matching problem and thepractical applicability of the developed approaches are given due importance. Part I of the thesis covers two different yet closely related approaches to the matching problem. These are based on the classical approaches developed by Helton and Fano-Youla to study the broadband matching problems. The framework established in the first approach entails in finding the best H infinity approximation to an L infinity function, Փ via Nehari's theory. This amounts to reduce the problem to a generalized eigen value problem based on an operator defined on H2, the Hankel operator, HՓ. The realizability of a given gain is provided by the constraint, operator norm of HՓ less than or equal to one. The second approach formulates the matching problem as a convex optimisation problem where in further flexibility is provided to the gain profiles compared to the previous approach. It is based on two rich theories, namely Fano-Youla matching theory and analytic interpolation. The realizabilty of a given gain is based on the Fano-Youla de-embedding conditions which reduces to the positivity of a classical matrix in analytic interpolation theory, the Pick matrix. The concavity of the concerned Pick matrix allows finding the solution to the problem by means of implementing a non-linear semi-definite programming problem. Most importantly, we estimate sharp lower bounds to the matching criterion for finite degree matching circuits and furnish circuits attaining those bounds.Part II of the thesis aims at realizing the matching circuits as ladder networks consisting of inductors and capacitors and discusses some important realizability constraints as well. Matching circuits are designed for several mismatched antennas, testing the robustness of the developed approach. The theory developed in the first part of the thesis provides an efficient way of comparing the matching criterion obtained to the theoretical limits

Повний текст джерелаGenerative adversarial networks (GANs) är ett slags generativ modell som har fått mycket uppmärksamhet de senaste åren sedan de upptäcktes för sin potential att återskapa komplexa högdimensionella datafördelningar. Dessa förser en komprimerad representation av datan där enbart de karaktäriserande egenskaperna är bevarade, vilket följdaktligen inducerar ett avståndsmått på datarummet. Detta avståndsmått möjliggör interpolering inom datan vilket har åstadkommits med framgång tidigare. Häri föreslår vi en ny stokastisk interpoleringsmetod för GANs där interpolationen tvingas följa datafördelningen genom att implementera en sekventiell Monte Carlo algoritm för dragning av datapunkter. Resultaten för studien visar att metoden ger bättre interpolationer för datamängden LINES som användes; jämfört med resultaten av tidigare kända interpolationsmetoder syntes en märkbar förbättring genom kvalitativa och kvantitativa utvärderingar. Den framtagna interpolationsmetoden har alltså mött förväntningarna och är lovande, emellertid fordras att den testas på en mer komplex datamängd för att bekräfta att den fungerar väl även under mer generella förhållanden.

Повний текст джерелаVideo content now occupies about 82% of global internet traffic. This large percentage is due to the revolution in video content consumption. On the other hand, the market is increasingly demanding videos with higher resolutions and qualities. This causes a significant increase in the amount of data to be transmitted. Hence the need to develop video coding algorithms even more efficient than existing ones to limit the increase in the rate of data transmission and ensure a better quality of service. In addition, the impressive consumption of multimedia content in electronic products has an ecological impact. Therefore, finding a compromise between the complexity of algorithms and the efficiency of implementations is a new challenge. As a result, a collaborative team was created with the aim of developing a new video coding standard, Versatile Video Coding – VVC/H.266. Although VVC was able to achieve a more than 40% reduction in throughput compared to HEVC, this does not mean at all that there is no longer a need to further improve coding efficiency. In addition, VVC adds remarkable complexity compared to HEVC. This thesis responds to these problems by proposing three new encoding methods. The contributions of this research are divided into two main axes. The first axis is to propose and implement new compression tools in the new standard, capable of generating additional coding gains. Two methods have been proposed for this first axis. These two methods rely on the derivation of prediction information at the decoder side. This is because increasing encoder choices can improve the accuracy of predictions and yield less energy residue, leading to a reduction in bit rate. Nevertheless, more prediction modes involve more signaling to be sent into the binary stream to inform the decoder of the choices that have been made at the encoder. The gains mentioned above are therefore more than offset by the added signaling. If the prediction information has been derived from the decoder, the latter is no longer passive, but becomes active hence the concept of intelligent decoder. Thus, it will be useless to signal the information, hence a gain in signalization. Each of the two methods offers a different intelligent technique than the other to predict information at the decoder level. The first technique constructs a histogram of gradients to deduce different intra-prediction modes that can then be combined by means of prediction fusion, to obtain the final intra-prediction for a given block. This fusion property makes it possible to more accurately predict areas with complex textures, which, in conventional coding schemes, would rather require partitioning and/or finer transmission of high-energy residues. The second technique gives VVC the ability to switch between different interpolation filters of the inter prediction. The deduction of the optimal filter selected by the encoder is achieved through convolutional neural networks. The second axis, unlike the first, does not seek to add a contribution to the VVC algorithm. This axis rather aims to build an optimized use of the already existing algorithm. The ultimate goal is to find the best possible compromise between the compression efficiency delivered and the complexity imposed by VVC tools. Thus, an optimization system is designed to determine an effective technique for activating the new coding tools. The determination of these tools can be done either using artificial neural networks or without any artificial intelligence technique

Повний текст джерелаIn this thesis, a multirate realization of an interpolation operation is explored. As one of the requirements for proper functionality of the digital pulse-width modulator, a 16-bit digital input signal is to be upsampled 32 times. To obtain the required oversampling ratio, five separate interpolator stages were designed and implemented. Each interpolator stage performed uppsampling by a factor of two followed by an image-rejection lowpass FIR filter. Since, each individual interpolator stage upsamples the input signal by a factor of two, interpolation filters were realized as a half-band FIR filters. This kind of linear-phase FIR filters have a nice property of having every other filter coefficient equal to zero except for the middle one which equals 0.5. By utilizing the half-band FIR filters for the actual realization of the interpolation filters, the overall computational complexity was substantially reduced. In addition, several multirate techniques have been utilized for deriving more efficient interpolator structures. Hence, the impulse response of individual interpolator filters was rewritten into its corresponding polyphase form. This further simplifies the interpolator realization. To eliminate multiplication by 0.5 in one of two polyphase subfilters, the filter gain was deliberately increased by a factor of two. Thus, one polyphase path only contained delay elements. In addition, for the realization of filter multipliers, a multiple constant multiplication, (MCM), algorithm was utilized. The idea behind the MCM algorithm, was to perform multiplication operations as a number of addition operations and appropriate input signal shifts. As a result, less hardware was needed for the actual interpolation chain implementation. For the correct functionality of the interpolator chain, scaling coefficients were introduced into the each interpolation stage. This is done in order to reduce the possibility of overflow. For the scaling process, a safe scaling method was used. The actual quantization noise generated by the interpolator chain was also estimated and appropriate system adjustments were performed.

Повний текст джерелаOur work deals with the quality of colour images provided by a mono-CCD colour camera, which acquires only one colour component at each pixel by means of the CFA (Colour Filter Array) which covers the CCD sensor. A procedure - called demosaicing - is necessary to estimate the other two missing colour components at each pixel, so as to obtain a colour image in this kind of cameras. We aim to determine which method of demosaicing provides the results that are best adapted to colour image analyses for the reconstruction of scene. First, we present the principles on how the mono-CCD cameras acquire digital colour images, as well as the different arrangements of CFA used in such cameras. Once the influence of the CFA arrangement on the performance of demosaicing has been presented, we focus our studies on the demosaicing methods based on the Bayer CFA. A mathematical formalization for demosaicing is proposed before we present the numerous demosaicing methods in the literature, as well as the post-processing algorithms to correct the demosaiced images. We then investigate the evaluation criteria for the quality of the colour images estimated by demosaicing. First are described the different possible artefacts generated by demosaicing and the reasons for their generation, which allow us to point out the limits of the classical measures used to evaluate the estimated images. We then propose two original measures to quantify the presence of the two main artefacts, namely false colour and zipper effect. At last, we present new criteria based on the analysis of features extracted from colour images, by measuring the quality of edge detection in the estimated images

Повний текст джерелаThe problem of impedance matching in electronics and particularly in RF engineering consists on minimising the reflection of the power that is to be transmitted, by a generator, to a given load within a frequency band. The matching and filtering requirements in classical communication systems are usually satisfied by using a matching circuit followed by a filter. We propose here to design matching filters that integrate both, matching and filtering requirements, in a single device and thereby increase the overall efficiency and compactness of the system. In this work, the matching problem is formulated by introducing convex optimisation on the framework established by the matching theory of Fano and Youla. As a result, by means of modern non-linear semi-definite programming techniques, a convex problem, and therefore with guaranteed optimality, is achieved. Finally, to demonstrate the advantages provided by the developed theory beyond the synthesis of filters with frequency varying loads, we consider two practical applications which are recurrent in the design of communication devices. These applications are, on the one hand, the matching of an array of antennas with the objective of maximizing the radiation efficiency, and on the other hand the synthesis of multiplexers where each of the channel filters is matched to the rest of the device, including the filters corresponding to the other channels

Повний текст джерелаTransmission of data through wireless networks is one of the most important aspects in the study telecommunications systems. The large volume of data that needs to be transmitted in a very small time interval has resulted in the need to make the system more efficient while increasing the throughput. This has been accomplished through more efficient coding, reduction of the power consumption and through the use of modulation. This masters thesis deals with the study, design and implementation of the typical OFDM system architecture, based on the standard IEEE802.11. This standard was chosen because of its wide acceptance and use regarding transmission of data in wireless networks. The thesis details the adjustments and measurements needed for determining suitable characteristics and the types of filters required in an OFDM system. Additionally two new OFDM system architectures arte introduced aiming at reducing the overall power consumption and the complexity of the formulae used for symbol construction. Particular importance is given in the designing and the implementation of these architectures regarding their incorporation in FPGA devices.

Recently, the digital still cameras (DSCs) are popular with consumers as a device to capture digital images easily. For cost and size consideration, most DSCs and industrial cameras use Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) or Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) sensor to capture the varied colors in a scene with a single sensor chip. However, the single CCD or CMOS sensor does not provide sufficient color resolutions. The solution for most DSC designers is to cover the sensor’s surface with a mosaic of colored filters: Color Filter Array (CFA). Since there is only one color array element in each pixel, the other two missing color elements must be estimated. Thus, the recovery of full color images from CFA-based sensors requires a process of estimating values of missing color elements at each pixel by its adjacent pixels. This reconstruction process of a full color image from a color mosaic is commonly called color interpolation or color de-mosaicking algorithm. In this thesis, a de-mosaicking technique is proposed to interpolate three color channels (Red, Green, and Blue) using Residual Interpolation and embedded artifact removal method based on median filter. We have compared this new approach to five different methods, and our method can not only outstandingly preserve more edge details and handle fine textures well but also remove most color alias, Moiré pattern, and maze pattern.

In this thesis, we implement and design the digital interpolation filter with verilog hardware description language and Altera FPGA device. We study and test the performances of four point digital interpolation filter under various delay coefficients with linear input signal and SRRC pulses signals. For the interpolator architecture, we have designed various versions of pipelined and combined register architectures and find that the fastest version increases the clock rate (or throughput) up to 3.5 times and the latency increases 4 clock periods. In all these architectures, we have rescaled the multiplier coefficients by a factor of 6 to reduce the complexity of the circuit.

In this thesis, we propose a novel interpolation on RGBW color filter array. Moreover, this method reduces the problem of color-alias and requires low computation. We introduce the background first, and review some traditional interpolation schemes. Then we discuss some problems in color interpolations such as edge-blurred and color-alias effects. Next, we will explain our proposed method in Chapter 3, and show the results in Chapter 4. We will compare different interpolations on Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and processing time. Last, conclusion and future works will be presented in Chapter 5.

In this thesis, a multiresolution representation called interpolative DPCMpyramid is proposed and its applications on image compression and fast surfaceinterpolation are also investigated.Interpolative DPCM pyramid is similar to the Laplacian pyramid except the wayof generating the low resolution signal.Instead of filtering the signal before downsampling, the low resolution signalis obtained by direct downsampling the high resolution signal withoutprefilters. The high resolution signal is estimated by interpolating the low resolution signal with the halfband filters. With this approach,an integer to integer multiresolution transform can be constructed.This pyramid can be treated as a biorthogonal perfect reconstructionfilter bank.It can also be treated as the discrete-time interpolative wavelet transform.Based on the framework of critically sampled pyramid, the relations betweeninterpolative DPCM pyramid, interpolative filter bank and interpolative wavelettransform are clarified in this thesis.The role of halfband filters in the construction of wavelet bases is discussed.Based on the time-domain Strang-Fix condition, the relation between theregularity and the polynomial interpolation is made more clear.The non-maximally flat filters are shown to provide much flexibility than themaximally flat filters in the scheme of adaptive interpolation. With thisadaptive interpolation algorithm,the adaptive interpolative DPCM pyramid is described andits applications on the lossless image compression are also investigated.Experimental results show that the adaptive interpolative DPCM pyramid arecomparable to the state-of-art lossless image compression methods.Based on the multiresolution scheme of interpolative wavelet transform, the fastcomputation algorithm is developed for the surface interpolation.In the developed fast algorithm, the interpolative wavelet transform isfirst appliedto construct the multiresolution representation of the interpolation problem, then, the multigrid algorithm is followed by the wavelet transform to solvethis problem.The wavelet transform can be treated as a precondition of the problem and theresultant signal to be solved will have an octave-band decomposition structure. This structure possesses the representation form needed for multigridcomputation and naturally inducesthe combined multiresolution/multigrid computationstructure.This combined structure is proposed in this thesis.Experimental results show that the proposed computation structure yieldssignificant improvement in the computation speed.

With the advent of the digital age, digital productsexist in every corner of life. The image-related products can be found everywhere, in which the most popular product is the digital camera. On a digital camera, many researches focus on image processing technology.In those technologies, one of the most important techniques is the color filter array interpolation or so called demosaicking algorithm. Generally, the color filter array interpolation methods can be classified into two categories: high-complexity techniques and low-cost techniques. The former yields visually pleasing images by utilizing more sophisticated demosaicking methods but requires more computation resource. However, the latteris more suitable for real-time applications, due to its simplicity and easy implementation in the VLSI chip. In this thesis, a high-performance algorithm for color filter array interpolation is proposed. The proposed scheme exploits both edge information and inter-channel correlations to improve the quality of the color image. Besides, the pipelined hardware architectureof the proposed algorithm is also designed for real-time application, which is a high-performance hardware implementation.
