The article is devoted to the study of electronic discourse, namely, its varieties in the context of studying communication on the Internet and social networking sites. The aim of the research is to develop a typology of discourses mediated by electronic devices. For this purpose, the specified types of discourses were distinguished and interpreted on the basis of the works of Ukrainian and Spanish-speaking scientists; the differences between virtual, Internet, online, computer, computer-mediated, electronic, social network and network discourses are clarified; discourse of social networking sites is interpreted as a speech representation of a communicative act that was implemented in social networking sites; a typology relevant for the Ukrainian and Spanish terminological systems has been developed. We believe that the term “electronic discourse” is a hyperonym that unites all the above types of discourse. In view of this, the following hierarchy (from hyperonym to hyponym) seems correct: electronic discourse, computer discourse (synonym: computer-mediated discourse), virtual discourse, Internet discourse, (synonym: online discourse), discourse of social networking sites (synonyms: discourse of social networks, social network discourse). The hierarchy of Spanish-language terminological compounds is similar. Unlike Ukrainian scientists, Spanish-speaking researchers mostly do not distinguish the discourse of social networking sites as a separate type of discourse. However, we suggest adding to the Spanish term system the concept of “discurso de las redes sociales” (discourse of social networking sites), since communication in social networks has become an integral part of the life of a modern person, and social networks themselves are a unique platform for communication on the Internet and the subject of research by many scientists. We consider further thorough research of the communicative space of social networking sites to be promising.

This paper offers an investigation of signals of metapragmatic awareness on the basis of the background assumptions of functional pragmatics. In this framework, metapragmatic awareness means the reflexive attitudes of discourse participants to various linguistic constructions and to the cognitive processes and socio-cultural expectations related to them. By employing a variety of metapragmatic signals, speakers can reflect on their own or their interlocutors’ current activity as message senders and/or addressees, or that of third parties, as well as on the organization of the discourse. The paper focuses on the types of metapragmatic signals. The empirical material is provided by two genres of computer-mediated Hungarian communication: thematically unrestricted and thematically restricted topics. As a result of an analysis of two connected samples of 200 and 500 contributions, respectively, fourteen types of metapragmatic signals have been differentiated, depending on what the given reflections are aimed at, and proportions of their types have been compared across the two samples. The analysis confirmed the claim that metapragmatic signals operate in narrative discourses as background items and reflect on the organization of the referential scene in the largest number of cases, whereas in spontaneous written conversations, they are far more in the foreground of attention and tend to refer to some aspect of the shared scene of attention.

Dalam dekade terakhir, kajian tentang relasi bahasa, media, dan teknologi komunikasi telah menjadi kajian lintas disiplin yang menarik perhatian para ahli dari berbagai disiplin ilmu. Lebih khusus, dalam kaitannya dengan kajian wacana di Internet, penggunaan bahasa di Internet dipandang sebagai pertanda lahirnya “new genre” sekaligus sebagai the state of the art dalam kajian wacana, yang dikenal sebagai kajian computer mediated discourse analysis (CMDA). Dalam konteks perkembangan itu, kajian ini dimaksudkan untuk merumuskan model analisis relasi bahasa dan Internet berbasis CMDA. Pertanyaannya, “sejauh mana paradigma CMDA dapat dirumuskan sebagai model pengembangan analisis relasi bahasa dan Internet. Kajian ini menemukan, bahwa ragam bahasa di Internet tidak sepenuhnya menunjukkan ciri-ciri ragam tulis, akan tetapi cenderung menunjukkan ciri-ciri “ragam lisan yang dituliskan”. Di samping itu, ditemukan pula, bahwa konteks media dan konteks situasi komunikasi tampak berpengaruh secara signifikan dalam menentukan makna suatu tuturan di Internet. Dengan demikian, paradigma CMDA dalam kajian wacana di Internet tampak relevan digunakan, terutama untuk mengindentifikasi ragam bahasa dan makna tuturan di Internet.Kata kunci: konteks media; konteks situasi komunikasi; Internet; computer mediated discourse analysis (CMDA)In the last decade, the study of language relations, media, and communications technology has become an interdisciplinary study that attracts the attention of experts from various disciplines. More specifically, in relation to the study of discourse on the Internet, the use of language on the Internet is seen as a sign of the birth of "new genre" as well as the state of the art in discourse studies, known as computer mediated discourse analysis (CMDA). In the context of this development, this study is intended to formulate models of analysis of language and Internet relationships based on CMDA. The question centers on the extent to which the CMDA paradigm can be formulated as a model for the development of language and Internet relation analysis. This study reveals that the variety of languages on the Internet does not fully show the characteristics of writing, but tends to show the characteristics of "written verbal". In addition, the analysis showed that the context of the media and the context of the communication situation seemed to have a significant effect on determining the meaning of a speech on the Internet. Thus, the CMDA paradigm in the study of discourse on the Internet seems relevant to use, especially to identify the variety of languages and meanings of speech on the Internet.Keywords: media context; context of communication situation; Internet; computer mediated discourse analysis (CMDA)

This study explores the external hierarchy of French film discourse, proposing a model that accounts for the elements generating this discourse and its interactions with other discourses within a hierarchical framework. The empirical material includes French films from 1990 to 2024 and elements of film text embedded in advertising, music, media, internet, and online literature discourses. Addressing the limited research on discourse hierarchy in modern linguistics, the study aims to identify and systematize the external hierarchy of French film discourse. The relevance of this research stems from the growing academic interest in film discourse and the lack of dedicated studies on its hierarchical organization. The author introduces a novel model that not only explains the generative elements of French film discourse but also situates it in a broader matrix of interacting discourses. The study employs discourse analysis, alongside theoretical methods such as generalization, synthesis, induction, and deduction. The findings reveal that the external hierarchy is shaped by generative elements – works of art, folklore, historical events, biographical details, and philosophical ideas – which occupy higher hierarchical levels relative to the discourse itself. Film production is also influenced by the socio-cultural context, emphasizing culturally significant elements and suppressing taboo topics. The research further demonstrates that the hierarchy of French film discourse relative to other discourses is mediated by poly-discursive units. These units function within one discourse while bearing content from another, positioning film discourse hierarchically above advertising, internet, media, online literature, and partially music discourses. This study enhances our understanding of the structural and functional properties of French film discourse and its broader cultural implications.

Internet linguistics has been rapidly improving since the advent of the Internet; humanity has come to value or emphasize a new form of communication, the Internet, or computer-mediated communication (CMC) around the world. Emoji is a graphical image, representing attitudes or concepts, and emotional feelings in a simple way. Emojis became popular around 2010 worldwide and can be used on any smartphone or computer in a message or conversation. Dresner & Herring stated that some social factors include the gender and the age of CMD users (2010). Emoji is one of people’s emotional and facial expressions, and its use exceeds the standard norm of the language, especially on Facebook and Twitter, known as the most used platforms in Mongolian internet communication. We have studied one of the sociolinguistics studies, the emoji use on Facebook and Twitter in Mongolian computer-mediated discourse, also known as conversational discourse, comparing people’s age, gender, emoji use, and frequency through the questionnaire we processed. The findings of the study show that people write online using excessive emojis, which means that emojis have become an integral part of people’s everyday life. Following excessive use of emojis, there is a fear that may lead to language extinction, and the spelling rules may be compromised, which could adversely affect the official written language. We hope that this study will contribute to the scholarly literature on computer-mediated discourse in general, Mongolian computer-mediated discourse in particular, and the emoji use and its frequency, a recently introduced in our country and a little-studied feature of computer-mediated discourse.

Abstract This article analyses identity constructions and representations of self-identifying transgender individuals on a web-based forum. Although the forum is aimed towards all transgender users, the primary user-group are transfeminine users (intending on) undergoing medico-surgical interventions to align their physiology and identity. The data for this analysis are initial text posts from the forum board used for introductions (i.e. new users of the forum introducing themselves). The article assumes that introductions are the context in which one asserts key identity features; hence, this board is the most pertinent for analysing identity construction. In this article, I use a combination of corpus linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies tools to analyse the use of pronouns and gender-indexical nouns in identity constructions and the representation of social categorisations. This article is an attempt to demonstrate that transgender is not a collective homogeneous identity, and that gender-sex incongruence may not be a salient identity feature for some forum-users. I also examine the ideologies (re)produced in the local forum-communication discourse, and the evaluation of hegemonic practices within transgender discourse and wider gender discourse to further demonstrate the heterogeneity of transgender identity.

The current paper is focused on the research of Internet-mediated text as a special kind of oral-written discourse. The Internet has spawned an entirely new form of communication at the intersection of its conventional forms – a "written spoken language" which differs both from standard written speech and standard oral speech. Social network discourse as a result of Internet-mediated communication is characterized by a set of variant and invariant parameters that appear in the verbal and paraverbal characteristics of the digitally processed written text. The text as a product of the intellectual activity of a particular person is a complex structural formation with the laws of relations. The transition to a digital personality significantly affected the process of transmission and formation of the final digital product: text – intertext – quasi-text as a product of multi-stage processing of the initial version of the text. The main factors that characterize social network discourse presented in the article are reflected in the specifics of the texts generated in its process and which are considered as the result of the newest type of Internet-mediated communication. The article presents a paradigm change of linguistic expertology in relation to digital content, considers traditional and the newest approaches to estimating the key linguistic parameters that would allow to solve profiling issues on the basis of Russian speech.

This paper examines the forms of commodification and entrepreneurship that are emerging as economic activity is mediated through the Internet. These processes of commodification are usually conceptualised from two opposing discourses: those of business and poststructuralism. Business discourses remain faithful to certain established positions — most notably, there are continued emphases on the authority of the individual entrepreneur and the logic of scarcity as forces that determine economic value in electronic commerce. In contrast, poststructural discourse advocates for a conceptualisation of commodification which recognises the spaces that hypertextual environments like the Internet are able to open up for consumers. In these spaces, it is proposed, consumers can create subjectivities that can challenge — and so counter — these business discourses' positions. This paper sets out to examine the claims that both of these discourses make in relation to the commodification of the Internet. Through the presentation of a case Study of a small business that is attempting to make money from the Internet, this paper then looks at how aspects of both of these contrasting positions can inform practices that attempt to commodify the Internet.

Introduction. The article discusses issues of representing medical information in online communities. Much attention is paid to modern areas of research on network discourse. Particular emphasis is paid to studies related to the problems of the terminology of the area. In this regard, the article presents different points of view on the typology and classification of texts in Internet-mediated communication. The area of interest for this study is medical content presented in Internet-mediated communication. The work specifies the concept of “medical content”. Methodology and sources. A study corpus is formed in accordance with the aim – to analyse the features of presenting medical information in English-language online discourse; methods of analysis are determined depending on the aim. The following criteria are used to analyse the study corpus material: pragmatic, media, structural-semantic and stylistic-linguistic parameters. The research corpus includes texts published in English, presented on the Reddit website within communities discussing issues of healthy lifestyle, health care, and pathological conditions. Results and discussion. Based on pragmatic parameters (type of addressee/type of addresser) and the topic of published information, the research material can be conditionally divided into several groups, the description of each group is given in the paper. The results obtained allow suggesting that medical content within the online community is aimed at two main population groups - healthcare professionals and lay people who are interested in issues related to the medical area. The medical information is presented based on a pragmatic and thematic principle. In terms of pragmatics, the main functions of presenting medical information are informative, ascertaining, phatic, expressive. Conclusion. The content of the research corpus consists of verbal texts with varying degrees of creolization – zero, partial, complete. They are characterised by all the features of the oral and written language typical of Internet-mediated communication.

The paper analyses the emic conceptualisations of “religious identity” among the users of two online Catholic forums in Poland, dyskusje.katolik.pl and forum.wiara.pl, with the use of computer-mediated discourse analysis (cmda). This study aims to contribute to the debates on online religious identity construction, in particular within heteronomous and/or contentious communities (Abdel-Fadil, 2017; Davidson & Farquhar, 2014; Kimmons et al., 2017). The paper argues that religious identity on the forums has an individual and collective dimension, and that the fillings of the term “religious identity” often involve non-verbatim, covert references to religion and faith, which makes them similar to a division into “us” vs. “them.” It will be argued that the mediatised religious identities of forum users, while flexible and transformable, are also grounded in non-media contexts, for instance a church or a religious community, or a certain understanding of religion and religiosity.

Programs via the Internet are uniquely positioned to capture qualitative data. One reason is because the Internet facilitates the creation of a community of similar individuals who can exchange information and support related to living with a chronic illness. Synchronous conversations via the Internet can provide insight into real-time social interaction and the exchange of social support. One way to analyze interactions among individuals is by using qualitative methods such as content, conversation, or discourse analysis. This manuscript describes how we used content analysis with aspects from conversation and discourse analysis to analyze synchronous conversations via the Internet to describe what individuals talk about and how individuals talk in an Internet-mediated interaction. With the increase in Internet interventions that facilitate collection of real-time conversational data, this article provides insight into how combining qualitative methods can facilitate the coding and analysis of these complex data.

Abstract The internet and internet-mediated life have presented new issues and challenges for research on pragmatics. When analyzing the application of pragmatics to internet-mediated communication, a possibility is to set up a number of layers and study the contributions that traditional pragmatic schools can make to this new research area. These layers include, but are not limited to, user and contextual constraints, user to user by means of discourse, user to user in interaction, user to audience, user in a group of users and, user and non-intended no-propositional effects. Research on internet pragmatics, we believe, can, should and will extend and expand the scope of pragmatics. Ultimately, internet pragmatics, capturing and elucidating the order of things and the order of life more extensively, deeply and fully, seeks to explore and expound, from the perspective of pragmatics, ways of living, ways of doing, ways of seeing, and ways of (re)discovering.

Scientific and technological progress with all its achievements has affected various spheres of human life. Philological disciplines, including communicative linguistics, are no exception. The means of communication have changed significantly in recent decades. No one is surprised by computer-mediated interactions, the internet has become available, and it is not difficult for many people to use personal electronic gadgets. These new developments have affected both the sphere of personal communication, including business, work, and professional relationships. All this is also relevant for diplomatic discourse, the evolutionary leap of which has taken place literally in half a century: from isolation and going beyond political discourse to the level of independent development to its current functioning with the active use of the entire palette of communication tools, methods, and techniques, including Internet resources, in particular, microblogs. The purpose of this article is to determine, describe and make an attempt to predict the levels and structure of genres of diplomatic discourse in the coming decades using examples of its manifestations on Twitter in the best traditions of classical linguistics schools and considering the achievements of new research areas in linguistics.

This article analyzes the historical continuity between the opposition of the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) to the Fairness Doctrine (1949) and to the contemporary Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Open Internet principle, net neutrality. These debates demonstrate how media policy discourse has shaped democratic ideals, including by designating whose voices are or are not included in broadcast and digital communication spaces. The discourse emerging from both media policy debates reveals that fears concerning cultural hegemony and the diversity of expression in the United States have intertwined with fears concerning the invasion of foreign ideologies. The article then considers the possibility of reconciling religious and secular discourse in the mediated public sphere.

The article analyzes flaming as a tool for a speech conflict inciting. The author backs up the idea that flaming as a mean of speech aggression appeared on the threshold of a new era due to the development of the mass media and computer-mediated communication in the Internet discourse. It is shown that flaming is actively used in combination with other forms of speech aggression in Internet discourse, such as trolling and cyberbullying. Phenomenon of «hate speech» is assigned a special role in flamewars. This term as the international legal practice shows, denotes the opposition of the subjects described in the text based on certain characteristics (race, language, religion, nationality, or belonging to any group) and inducement to violent actions that are carried out based on them. Using specific examples, the author attempts to classify flaming to reveal their strategic goals and to describe the tactics of discreditation illustrating the intent of the content creator. The work emphasizes the need to reveal the communicating tactics in the framework of forensic linguistics examination as well as deanonymization of the flaming content creators via forensic authorship examination.

The subject of the study is the function of figurative units in mediated political discourse, their influence on the perception and interpretation of information by the audience. The object of the research is mediated political discourse, represented in the texts of Russian and Chinese internet blogs, interviews with politicians, and political talk shows reflecting current political realities. The author examines in detail aspects such as the concept of mediated political discourse and imagery, the use of figurative units to enhance the impact on the audience, perform evaluative functions, and soften or intensify the content of the message. Special attention is paid to comparing the types of figurative units used in political communication in both countries, their significance in creating a convincing image and strengthening the emotional connection with the audience. Using continuous sampling, more than 150 texts from political talk shows, interviews with politicians, and blogs were collected and analyzed in terms of figurative units. The article proposes a new approach to classifying figurative units in mediated political discourse, identifying five key types: metaphors, figurative comparisons, idioms, precedent phenomena, proverbs, colloquialisms, and swear words. The author introduces a functional classification that allows a more detailed examination of the role of these units in political communication. Attention is paid to three functions of figurative units: the impact function, the evaluative function, and the functions of intensifying or softening content, which helps to better understand the mechanisms of influence on public perception and the political context. Figurative units in mediated political discourse play a crucial role in shaping political image, enhancing persuasiveness, and influencing public opinion. The influence of figurative means on the perception of information and evaluation of political events is key for shaping political views.

Traditionally, there are distinguished two forms of speech (oral and written). In the era of widespread digitalization, a new (computer-mediated) communication is emerging. The question arises, what form of speech generates a new type of communication, a special - hybrid - form of speech (“oral-written”) or a variety of existing forms. An attempt to answer this question is the task of the article. During the research it was found that the nature of this form is hybrid: it organically combines the beginning of both oral discourse and written speech. At the same time oral and written speech has its own pragmatics, which is different from the pragmatics of known forms of speech. If oral speech is designed to promote communication, written speech is designed to preserve information, then oralwritten discourse is a platform for the realization and manifestation of the individuality of the author of speech. The author of oral and written speech creates his identity, recreates the image of his “I” anew. Hence the leading “modus” of oral and written speech. Oral speech is “over-phonetic”: it has a rich arsenal of verbal and non-verbal means for conveying information, as well as for expressing emotions. Written speech has almost no extra-linguistic, additional means of expression, it is super-grammatical. In the context of oral-written discourse, the individual expresses himself (builds or transforms an already created image) often by playing with the form. Oral-written discourse on the Internet is “super graphic”. The peculiarity of representatives of generation Z lies in the almost simultaneous (parallel) mastery of written and oral-written speech. This cannot but affect the process of mastering writing skills by modern adolescents

This study is a critical mixed-methods investigation of the Joker’s ubiquity within international media discourse. The research comparatively examines the myth’s presence within The Guardian and The New York Times’ news reporting (1999–2020), and determines intermedia agenda-setting processes. Using a corpus linguistics approach, the paper also analyses news media’s deployment of the Joker as a figure of speech, with the purpose of identifying prominent news values. The results indicate a high prevalence of consonance, eliteness, proximity, negativity, and superlativeness. Moreover, the study investigates the role that user-generated media plays in perpetuating or countering dominant hegemonies, by semiotically analysing internet memes that use the myth within the r/meme subreddit community. Overall, the study finds that the Joker is a popular resource for the mediated construction of a derogatory stereotype, associated with sexist, racist and ableist myths, often in connection to political elites (Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Barack Obama), and serves as a tool for mockery, shame, and dramatization of events.

This study is a quantitative-qualitative, descriptive study in one of the mediums of computer-mediated communication, CMC. It attempts to investigate some stylistic features in the medium of Internet Relay Chat IRC that are used by online chatters. The data of this study are gathered from open access chatrooms through screen shots. The number of screen shots that are used in the analyses is (30) screen shots. The findings reveal that chat systems allow chatters to use different stylistic features such as graphic features, orthographic features, discourse features, flaming, spamming, spoofing, trolling, and lurking. The most frequent features are orthographic features such as “abbreviation, acronyms and punctuation”. These features are widely used in internet relay chat to save time, effort and as economy expressions.

The paper addresses the use of English in the Russian-based recruitment discourse. Language is viewed through the prism of the sociolinguistics of globalization and understood as a set of mobile trans-locally operative resources used to achieve specific goals of communication. The corpus for analysis includes job ads and rsums posted on the recruitment platforms HeadHunter and Super.Job, videotaped conversations of job seekers with recruiters and employers, and ethnographic interviews with recruitment professionals. We used discourse analysis, ethnographic methods, and quantitative measuring to analyze the data. The study consists of two stages. During the first stage, we found out that English can be used as the main language of recruitment or in the form of insertions in the Russian-based texts to demonstrate professionalism, position the company, and filter the candidates. The second stage revealed that the all-English segment of the Russian recruitment discourse has narrowed, while the use of English in truncated forms has increased. This dynamic is caused by the expansion of the digital segment of the Russian job market (social media, Internet channels), where English-mediated technologies are the main instrument of interaction with clients. It results in further hybridization and boosts translingualism in work-related settings. English, with its tendency to informal personified communication patterns, also affects the communicative conventions of the Russian-based recruitment discourse. The study demonstrates the growing role of English as an agent of global professional discourses and an intermediary between people and technologies.

Internet Relay Chat-based computer-mediated communication provides a distinct space for social interaction and cultural contact, with new and inventive forms of language generated. Research has not fully investigated the specifically creative aspects of language in online interaction, and even less in communication between bilingual and multilingual speakers of English and other languages. Based on a 20,000-word corpus of private ICQ ('I Seek You') data and as evidenced in extensive examples of online communication, this article explores the linguistic creativity of a group of bilingual English-Cantonese speaking university students from Hong Kong. The study reveals the emergence of a bimodal, 'hybrid' spoken-written variety of English embracing an essentially informal, speakerly style that is produced in intimate, collaborative and synchronic contexts. The linguistic creativities in this variety, evidenced, in particular, by code-switching, loan translation and relexicalization, as well as by acoustic and graphical wordplay, represent an e-discourse repertoire that is used to achieve both specific interactional purposes and to articulate a dual cultural identity. The article argues that this form of creative computer-mediated literacy practice has a significant impact on the ways in which interactive and expressive meanings are conveyed.

AbstractThis study will examine how the virtual community communication is carried out by gay teenagers on Grindr social media. Why is the youth gay community using the Grindr app as a communication tool? What social effects arise from the Grindr application's virtual community communication? This article used Lori Kendall's theory of community and the Internet, that discuss the emergence of social relationships that are mediated by communication via the internet. The findings of this study explain that the characteristics of virtual community communication rise a community that is speech, discourse and practice in nature. These three forms of gay virtual community communication among adolescents cannot be separated because each form has characteristics and is a stage in forming a community. AbstrakPenelitian ini akan mencermati bagaimana komunikasi komunitas virtual dilakukan kaum gay remaja di media sosial Grindr. Mengapa komunitas gay remaja menggunakan aplikasi Grindr sebagai alat komunikasi? Efek sosial seperti apa yang muncul dari komunikasi komunitas virtual aplikasi Grindr? Artikel ini menggunakan teori community dan internet dari Lori Kendall, yang membahas mengenai munculnya hubungan sosial yang dimediasi oleh komunikasi melalui internet. Temuan kajian ini menjelaskan bahwa karakteristik komunikasi komunitas virtual tersebut memunculkan suatu komunitas yang sifatnya speech, discourse dan practice. The advent of the digital age and the subsequent rise of the Internet have greatly impacted the relationship between online opinion and user discourse in the early evolution of traditional media. However, it has introduced new challenges, namely the emergence of social bots that generate and disseminate information that aims to influence public opinion. Thus, the paper attempts to decipher whether online public opinion, user discourse, and the positions of social robots in the production and dissemination of information will reinforce or change each other. Through the adoption of questionnaire survey method, 414 Internet users who understand and have contacted the human-computer account on Douyin platform as the survey object, online questionnaire survey, it screens out 414 effective questionnaires for data analysis. Besides, the samples are analyzed for reliability, correlation, exploratory factor analysis (validity analysis), linear regression analysis (mediated effects analysis), and analysis of variance using the SPSS (Statistical Product Service Solutions) tool, and the data are obtained. At the same time, combined with text analysis in qualitative research, semiotic analysis is mainly used to analyze how sample data conveys the relationship between online public opinion, user discourse, and social robots. On this basis, the results indicate that all five hypotheses presented in the paper are verified, and two new relationships are explored.

This paper proposes à linguistic analysis of the verbalisation of emotions on the Internet. The goal was to examine the way the expression of emotions can be exploited by the speaker. Therefore, the study was conducted on a propagandist discourse available on the Internet. More particularly, <em>Dabiq</em> and <em>Dar al-Islam</em>, the official online magazines published by the Islamic State, constituted the corpus of this analysis. This way, it was possible to investigate how emotions, which are spontaneous by nature, become carefully formulated productions.</p>

Due to the fact that the current, fourth wave of computing innovation can be regarded as driven by immersive, spatial technologies, the Metaverse as the so-called post-reality universe and multi-user virtual environment has a considerable potential to become the future of the digital discourse. With Natural Language Processing (NLP) conceptualized as a subfield of artificial intelligence and linguistics, the following paper argues for the inclusion of NLP-based methods in the developing discourse revolving around the transformative idea of the Metaverse. At the same time, computer-mediated communication (CMC), can potentially be extended to the new context of the extensive online world of the Metaverse.

The article aims at the substantiation, definition and genre characteristics of a new sphere of Internet communication – learning online discourse, which is becoming increasingly important in modern educational practice due to various social processes and technological development of society, but has not yet become the subject of linguistic and genre analysis. The research is based on observation and comparison of various genres emerging in online learning and illustrated by the online discourse on studying foreign languages. The basis for the analysis is the model of the Internet genre, which includes media, pragmatic, structural and linguistic parameters. The paper gives the definition of the online learning discourse as a computer mediated communicative activity for the formation of subject knowledge and skills of students. The given definition illustrates that it is important to include the leading media and pragmatic parameters in determining the type of discourse or a particular genre. Among the genres of online learning discourse the author singles out asynchronous (based on written speech format) and synchronous (oral) communication forms. Examples of the former are a learning website and its types (a learning website covering a separate course of lessons, a learning website as part of a personal site, a learning site as part of a learning portal), the latter is illustrated by a synchronous online lesson, its video recording and a recorded video lesson. Different genres of online educational discourse are characterized by the explication of the steps of the lesson. In the structure of the genre there is an instructive component, which is characterized by addressing, directiveness and the use of computer vocabulary, as well as an explanatory component, where the vocabulary of the studied subject area and thematic vocabulary are used.

This paper applies descriptive methods for yielding results on (the frequency of) translation procedures employed in translating tourism-oriented websites from Serbian into English. Since the tourism industry forcefully encourages culture-mediated communication, the aim of this paper was to perform an analysis of translation strategies applied to cope with specific cultural concepts detected on the Internet websites of official tourist organizations of three major cities in Serbia. The analytic framework was grounded in a critical approach to concrete examples and translators’ suggestions. The research stages included data collection, classification, and analysis and the preferred translation procedures were noted down. The paper also tried to decide to what extent the need for linguistic accuracy was replaced by a requirement for cultural sensitivity since not only do cultural implications for translation include lexical content and syntax, but they also comprise ideologies, history and ways of life in a given culture. By providing the projection of dominant procedures used in translating culture-specific items in tourism discourse, this linguistic perspective hopes to offer both the deeper insight into lexical system of the two languages and the guidelines to translators when solving such challenges during translation process.

Abstract This paper deals with the functioning of expressive and communicative formulas of modern German in computer-mediated discourse. The set phrases analysed are pre-formed sentence-value word combinations that serve as a means of expression of various speech intentions and emotions. These linguistic units are known to evade a uniform classification scheme, with boundaries between different groups being indistinct. The set phrases considered in this work are viewed as a functional-semantic field which includes communicative and expressive formulas and some mixed types. By discussing their cultural specificity – provided by units containing symbolic components, as well as by entities in various areas of national life, and fixed phrases of obscure literary origin – I attempt to explore their intertextual potential for further contribution to studies in intercultural communication. Expressivity, intertextuality, multimedia impact and interactivity have been defined as constitutive characteristics of computer-mediated discourse. The units discussed keep the tone of asynchronous online communication humorous and help to establish communicative closeness. In online media, the language game comes to the fore: a common phenomenon is semantic transformation often performed as simultaneous actualisation (ambiguity) of literal and idiomatic meaning, causing additional communicative effects. In combination with the informative part of a headline, these units act as emotional and evaluative indicators of media texts. Due to its technological features, internet communication allows easy combination of visual and verbal channels of information, and so there is frequent play between language images and digital images, especially in photo and video hosting services. My analysis of different online genres has shown that in internet communication, the core of the functional-semantic field (i.e. the most frequently used units) acquires added discursive value. The universal nature of their creative use, appeal, entertainment and community-building functions was also ascertained.

Abstract This paper compares data from a Singaporean chit chat forum to informal spoken data. We first perform a qualitative analysis of text samples in a framework of indexicality. Then we present quantitative findings for two (sets of) features each of the contact variety Singlish (particles, the kena-passive) and spoken English in general (discourse markers, contractions). For the former some similarities are observed but we also find that the forum contributors tend to be creative and innovative in their choice of particles. In this connection we argue that they index specific subgroup identities and further point out that Singlish is a rather flexible set of resources. Our findings differ from those of previous research on Jamaican Creole as used in an internet forum, thus showing that the use of contact varieties in computer-mediated communication can take different forms. The general features of spoken English are used comparatively less in the forum data, indicating that using Singlish features in writing is not tantamount to writing down spoken language. Moreover, we draw attention to features of computer-mediated communication in in the chit chat forum data. Finally we discuss implications in terms of the Dynamic Model of the evolution of Postcolonial Englishes (Schneider 2007).

This study examines the computer-mediated discussion topics of parents who raise bilingual and multilingual children in four active Facebook and Internet forums, and investigates how the language ideologies embedded in the multiple languages being used in these forums are expressed. In this study, 179 data points, including users’ posts and thread comments, were collected to identify the most frequently discussed topics as part of my description of the database, in order to identify parental ideologies by using values analysis. The five most-discussed topics were selected to make a critical discourse analysis on the narratives to understand the language ideologies regarding the use of multiple languages, and regarding what users of the groups are saying specifically about the languages when analyzing metalinguistic discourses. This study found the most recurrent language ideologies that parents expressed on these online forums were supporting bilingualism/multilingualism, and claim that bilingualism/multilingualism is advantageous. Parents also demonstrate language ideologies supporting keeping languages separate, such as following the one parent one language (OPOL) method, using the minority language at home, and so on. A detailed values analysis with illustrative sample messages from the online posts and comments also more specifically shows the recurrent language ideologies identified, and parents’ views underlying their narratives on their posts and thread comments.

The article examines the sociolinguistic dynamics of digital communication within English-speaking social media environments. The research explores linguistic globalization, which is manifested through the variability in creating new lexemes and the formation of media-induced neologisms on such Internet platforms as Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, X, Threads, YouTube, and TikTok. By analyzing virtual discursive practices, the research highlights changes in technology-mediated communication. The aim of this research is to focus on the emergence of lexical innovations and their implications for slang lexicography, particularly within the context of English Internet discourse and linguistic creativity in the digital environment. The research methodology is based on a comprehensive lexical analysis of social media data, statistical portals, academic sources, and digital blogs. The study examines the role of Internet communication in fostering new lexical units, reconstructing their semantic structure and tracing their shift from secondary to primary nomination. Additionally, it explores the sociocultural adaptation of emerging vocabulary and the alternation of linguistic standards, reflected in society’s tendency to use emphatic and expressive means. Furthermore, social media platforms have contributed to generational linguistic differentiation, where different generations exhibit distinct features in synchronous and asynchronous dialogues. The article also addresses pragmalinguistic aspects of slang and the multimodal communicative paradigm, which integrates textual, visual, and hypertextual components into modern digital discourse. The findings emphasize the influence of media on cognitive linguistics, sociocultural behavior patterns, and the evolution of global and local linguistic practices within the digital dimension. The study of neologisms in social networks can help in the development of effective language policy strategies, adaptation of educational programs and improvement of lexicographic resources.

“Don’t Shop Here” is the title of a Facebook group that posts authentic customer reviews, written by Egyptians, on different products and services. Since these posts are a form of communication that takes place via electronic devices on the internet, it is considered a Computer-Mediated Discourse (CMD), also known as Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). From the group title, the consumers’ posts that are published in the group are mostly negative, with a live interaction and comments by the group members, who sometimes include product/service providers among them. This study focuses on consumers’ interpersonal behavior that reveals their attitudes and evaluations. This is believed to be achieved by applying Hyland’s (2005) Metadiscourse Model. The model comprises several analytical tools that include engagement markers, hedges, boosters, attitude markers and self-mention that assist in describing the different relationships between customers and their audience, on the one hand, and customers and product/service providers, on the other hand.

Challenges are in line with the risk-taking practices frequent in child and youth culture. However, online challenges take on new meanings when mediated by digital sociability. To analyze this phenomenon, 122 challenge videos in Portuguese that had been made by Brazilian children or adolescents were recovered from the YouTube platform, of which 35 were selected and transcribed. Twelve types of challenges were analyzed; all involved potential self-inflicted injuries to participants, with risks ranging from minor to lethal. The discourse analysis led to an interpretation based on the theory of self-image and ethos. Online challenges appear as a powerful communicative resource to reaffirm belonging, recognition, and audience adherence, and so constitute a media strategy adopted by youth in the construction of an Internet-mediated identity in which risk and violence are decisive devices in building a self-image capable of retaining an audience. The enunciator’s body sacrifice assumes a bargaining role in this media adherence.

In the context of internet genre migration and proliferation, conventional taxonomies are no longer valid. To classify blogs between thematic and personal blogs is to blissfully ignore the legions of successful content prosumers, from political blogs to travel blogs, from food blogs to MAD (mom and dad) blogs, from fashion blogs to milblogs. With the recent explosion of social media, the digital landscape shifted and today there are more voices online than ever before. For blogs, however, the original purpose for communication has always been twofold: to inform and to emote. Computer-mediated communication may be overpopulated with a myriad of mixed forms and blogs might be dead or simply, difficult to reach with so much overlapping. Yet high-impact blogs still remain and are widely read. This paper explores the language of high-impact blogs, testing a new methodology for genre analysis to solve genre hybridity in the case of computer-mediated discourse.

Abstract The “sphere of intimacy” is increasingly mediated by a socio-technical network inlaid with new meanings and readings in love and seduction games. In these affective-digital exchanges, nudes are essential in linking interest between partners, also setting spaces for power struggles and violence. This work aims to analyze the prevailing moralities, the emotional management, and the inclusion of the body in affirming autonomy and diversity identified in the statements of young people whose intimate contents were disseminated on the internet without their consent. We analyzed 20 videos of young YouTubers who had such an experience from the Critical Discourse Analysis perspective. The statements carry discursive forces of “venting”, “testimony”, and, above all, “counseling”. The narrated experiences highlight the dynamics of disseminating these intimate contents and how they differently affect the representations of face and social recognition of boys and girls. Handling suffering techniques vary between resignation in the face of patriarchal order and overcoming and autonomy discourses. We also highlight the initiatives of these young people in managing intimate images and a political stance on the use and expression of their bodies.

The move to incorporate computer-mediated communication (CMC) into the business curriculum is driven by job market demands for information technol ogy skills. Business instructors may discover, however, a pedagogical bonus: more communication with their students outside the classroom. We studied the perceptions and practices of 138 students in business communications at one of the historically black colleges and universities who used e-mail and the Internet to complete assignments. The results indicate that CMC encouraged students to become active learners and to contact instructors. Anecdotal evi dence suggests that e-mail helps African-American students to see instructors as facilitators, though it does not necessarily become a rhetorical "safe house," where students engage in vernacular discourse. Nevertheless, e-mail fosters an informal rhetorical relationship that rewards openness and collaboration among students and instructors within the formal academic setting.

This article looks at the grotesque as a stylistic device in English memes. The novelty of the research is determined by the fact that for the first time the grotesque is analysed in detail within the context of such a popular and understudied phenomenon of computer-mediated communication as the Internet meme. The relevance of the paper consists in the necessity of studying the grotesque in the Internet meme with the aim of developing and complementing a coherent theory of Internet memes. The aim of the paper is to examine the functioning of the grotesque in English Internet memes from the perspective of discourse theory, taking into account the distinctive communicative and semiotic nature of these units. The research shows that the grotesque is a common stylistic device in English Internet memes. Such forms of grotesque realization as political underpinning, zoomorphism and the interplay of the present and the past were revealed. It is noted that the political underpinning of the grotesque is manifested when this stylistic device is used to emphasize aspects of the political sphere. As for zoomorphism, this phenomenon is realized when animals are likened to people in a grotesque way. Further, it is demonstrated that the interplay of the present and the past is based on the fantastic and grotesque expression of temporal relations in Internet memes. The empirical evidence testifies that, as a rule, the grotesque in Internet memes acts as a means of creating humour and helps to express the implication of the meme’s author. In addition to that, the findings indicate that the functioning of the grotesque in Internet memes is determined by the multimodal form of these units, which allows one to create an expressive and vivid grotesque image. In conclusion, the article outlines prospects for further study of the grotesque in Internet memes.

Abstract The influx of religious activities and religious discourse on the Internet has made it pertinent to examine the fundamental roles of language in the expression, presentation, understanding, and advancement of any set of religious beliefs and practices. One main aspect of online religious activities that continues to arrest the attention of scholars is the uniqueness of language used by religious practitioners. For instance, new linguistic strategies and devices have emerged as a result of bending language to suit trends on a new medium. The emergence of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the twenty-first century has also resulted in the manifestation of computer-mediated communication, with its attendant pervasive new forms of language and practices. Nigerian Pentecostal churches have used the Internet, especially the social media such as Facebook and Twitter, in propagating their doctrines. This study identifies emerging lexical trends in the way six Nigerian Pentecostal churches use language in extending their practices on the new media and submits that such innovations are leading up to the birth of a new cyber-variety of Nigerian English.

The arrival of the virtual realm and computer mediated communication (CMC) continues to attract considerable interest from a wide range of disciplines. Hine (2000) has suggested that previously negative understandings of CMC have been transcended. The virtual realm is now welcomed as a site for richer and more sustained interaction than previously envisaged. For the research community, the rapid development of the World Wide Web has opened new horizons and provided access to a new frontier and tool for data collection. The researcher can now engage in research on a world-wide, low cost, almost instantaneous scale - and in ways which potentially overcome some of the barriers imposed by more conventional research approaches. However, this somewhat idealistic view obscures both methodological and ethical difficulties that have become apparent throughout this research. If these difficulties are left unchecked, they may serve to undermine the use of the Internet as a tool for social research. The primary aim of this paper is to expose these difficulties and thus broaden the scope of discourse surrounding the Internet. A secondary aim is to explore the implications of the use of the Internet for the feminist methodological and research project. My aim here is to problematise the transference of existing methodological frameworks to an online setting. In this respect, I have presented this paper in the form of a research trajectory, outlining the course of my research from its conception to latter stages. The intention here is to suggest an avoidance of the use of the Internet as an ‘easy option’ and encourage a more developed focus on the justification, applicability and benefits of Internet research to the particular project. What has become apparent is that the effectiveness of CMC is much dependent on who is being researched, what is being researched and why.

This article examines online identity practices of Chinese doctors mediated through borrowed linguistic resources in a leading medical app. Setting against rapid societal changes in China which open up traditionally ‘powerful’ professions to market competition, and the development of a booming digital economy, this app and its semiotic work drawing on Chinese Internet vernacular, I will argue, offer a fascinating lens to probe into the highly dynamic online discursive practices in contemporary China. Drawing on the notions of entextualization and resemiotization, I will trace and analyse the patterned ways in which pre-existing linguistic resources are creatively reworked by the app to achieve new identity-making purposes. Situating the changes of the field of healthcare in China within a worldwide shift towards neoliberal ideologies and practices, I will also briefly discuss how the emergence of such new social space in digital settings may impact the production and communication of health knowledge and services in China.

This paper focuses on the online construction of self-disclosure of individuals suffering from eating disorders and demonstrates how strategies of soliciting online social support are mediated within the public sphere. McCormack (2010) indicates that participation of individuals suffering from eating disorders in online support groups, where they anonymously share their feelings and issues via the Internet, is more accessible and non-costly compared to offline settings. This serves as motivation for data to be collected from the discussion forums on the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) website. Relevant posts of self-disclosure containing instances of online solicitation of support dated from January 2018 to March 2018 were analysed using the computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) method and North’s (1997) Strategies of Soliciting Social Support. The findings reveal that the sharing of experience is regarded as the most frequent strategy of soliciting support opted by ED patients. This result in a lengthier posts where detailed explanation of their problems were disclosed. It appears that the strategy utilized in online support-solicitation is merely a channel used in portraying the actual state of the support-seekers in handling their illness. In addition, as ED is perceived to be uncommon and unprioritized in Asia (Miller & Pumariega, 2001), the possibility of getting help from various channels may be scarce. Thus, this study’s outcome provides a vivid image on how online social support discussions can be considered as one of the potential effective platforms to help individuals in the Southeast Asia who suffer from ED in their recovery process. The article is aimed at identifying and analyzing the main frames for conceptualizing the socio-political role of memes and the models of their linguistic representation in the newspaper articles (16 articles, mainly 2019-2020, in English) on the relevant topic. In other words, this is an attempt from a scientific standpoint to represent how modern media, which are becoming the source and means of the viral spread of Internet memes, meta-represent an element of their own communication processes. Methodologically, the study is based on examining media texts about Internet memes in the broad context of socio-political transformations emerging from the active development of forums, social networks, instant messengers, and other tools. It proceeds from analyzing the thematic grid in each article, identifying the key, repetitive lexical elements, including metaphors, associated with interpreting memes popularity and their functions, as well as taking into account some iconic components of these multimodal texts. Then I review the entire article mini-corpus to identify repetitive patterns of meme representation and study their evaluative component. These models that can be viewed as coordination patterns are further compared with the way Internet memes are considered in academic studies. As a result, it is shown that although in modern journalism the conceptualization of memes in many respects correlates with what the experts of technologically mediated communication say, the article’s appraisal of the importance for various aspects meme usage is different. Journalists are less concerned with the precise definition of the phenomenon, meme classification in terms of structural types or according to component relations in them. They do recognize that going viral is an important feature for memes, but journalists, as opposed to scholars, are less interested in what makes these information products popular and widely shared, often taking it for granted. At the same time, journalists (compared to ordinary users) nowadays are less inclined to view memes just as an entertainment. However, it should be borne in mind that changes in the functionality of memes, apparently, occur unevenly around the world and in a number of countries are less noticeable for objective reasons, and journalists may be well aware of the differences between the English-language socio-political discourse, especially in the United States, and the European one “lagging behind”. The more indicative is the desire to anticipate the inevitable future transformations and take into account the experience of the countries that are more “advanced” in terms of using memes for public and political purposes. Thus, the focus of attention in newspapers is shifted towards two frames, both of which are viewed as reflecting situations that are potentially problematic for society. One is associated with the ideas of domestic alt-right radicalism and international “information terrorism”. The second frame is also based on the concept of the world plunging into information wars which are aggravated by economic problems, social tensions, and uncertainty about future. Against this background, memes are seen as coping method, a way to let off steam and get emotional relief from tension.

The appearance of a large number of English-language innovations, which arose due to the development of the field of computer technologies and its implementation in various spheres of life and activity of representatives of the English-speaking world, caused the formation of a new subsystem of the English language ‒ metaterminological systems of the field of computer technologies. The defined meta-terminological system is an artificial, abstract, syncretic, ideal formation, the theoretical and methodological relevance of its separation is dictated by the research goal of the need to solve the problem of representing integral fragments of human existence and reality and its verbal embodiment. The analyzed subsystem is a complex, multi-level macrostructure that represents qualitatively new modes of human existence and reality, mediated by the existence of the computer and Internet communication. The complex, multidimensional nature and structural organization of the meta-terminological system of the English language in the field of computer technologies reflects the totality and regularity of the connections that exist between the concepts of the computer field and other spheres of human life and activity in the English-speaking world. The emergence of the concept of “metaterminological system” in the network of research linguistic space of the 21’st century is due to the evolutionary changes that took place in this field of humanitarian knowledge at the end of the 20’th and the beginning of the 21’st centuries. Due to the conceptual focus of linguistic research in the direction of their interdisciplinary and polyparadigmatism, it led to the generalization of their perspective, the inclusion of research material in qualitatively new systems, as evidenced by scientific works dedicated to the study of multimodal spaces, conceptospheres and conceptsystems, fractals, frame networks, innovative logosphere. These and other aspects indicate a modern general scientific tendency towards the integration and synthesis of scientific knowledge.

Abstract The present article discusses intimate conversations about suicide that are pursued on the Internet. Computer-mediated communication has made it possible for participants to remain anonymous and, simultaneously, enter into a public space to share personal thoughts about a stigmatized and taboo subject. This has also created new and unique opportunities to study a type of communication that was previously very difficult to access. Most of the participants on the studied forum are teenagers or young adults who communicate based on a need to recognize themselves in others, and to receive acknowledgement for their thoughts, feelings and experiences, thereby gaining acceptance and understanding. However, there are also destructive elements in the form of an exchange of suicide methods and participants exhorting each other to go ahead with their suicide plans. Moreover, participants are able to practise suicide behaviour in a mediated, conversational form, thereby making the act seem less fearful. The participants are furthermore involved in constructing and re-constructing a counter-discourse in which established society’s perceptions and values concerning suicide are questioned, as expressed in a critique against public institutions, mainly psychiatry.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the main features of the technology-mediated communication concerning online love affrairs. The thesis I will support is that emotional connections via internet are framed into a new discourse on personal identity and alterity, creating a new perspective on the culture of intimate relationships, with specific attitudes, behaviours and values, drawing new guidelines of emotivity, methaphors and concepts we use to express our feelings and thoughts. Thus, I will briefly investigate the phenomenon of online love datings as part of a media entartainment culture, the problem of intercorporeality and the paradox of choosing partners on the internet, together with their implications on the ethics of care, intimacy and togetherness. Away from giving verdicts or announcing the end of authentic communication, I will develop a conceptual framework to aid in exploring theoretical traits, combining interdisciplinary approaches in order to reflect them in online love-dating interactions. In the conclusion section, I will enlight on how we can succesfully develop a strong and reliable connection with a romantic partner, using the elements mentioned below, focusing on combining online and offline practices in order to nurture a mature and meaningfull relationship in the age of shifting communication paradigms.

This paper explores the linguistic and interactional properties of computer-mediated communication in Taiwan. We collected data from messages posted asynchronously on Internet websites. The three primary sources of messages were, in volume order, online Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs), chatrooms, and MSN messenger. We identify innovative uses of English and Mandarin Chinese hybrids, examine their function, and examine the online interlocutors’ ideologies when using them. Because of computer hardware and software, English plays an essential role even in a Mandarin-dominant online discourse by offering English expressions, words, pronunciations, and Roman letters to give loanwords, euphemisms, abbreviations, sentence-final particles, and emoticons in unique ways. The resultant hybrid language forms are easier to type, playful, funny, friendly, and trendy. The writer’s personality and cultural mentality are disclosed in such communication. Many speakers are alarmed about the effects of this language practice — the online interaction between English and Mandarin Chinese — on the development of Chinese in Taiwan.

The article provides an overview of numerous, frequently divergent views on the environmental security concept in mediated Internet communication and highlights the ambiguity of its interpretations. In this regard, there arises a need for a more precise definition of the concept “environmental security”, since linguistic accuracy can be helpful in understanding the mechanisms for ensuring it. The article aims at identifying the key role of figurative narratives in explaining the essence of environmental security as a controversial concept. The research relies on methods of deep semantic analysis, interpretive and critical discourse analysis. The study material is English-language discursive metaphors, elicited by continuous sampling and reflecting different interpretations of environmental security. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the substantiation of the explanatory potential of metaphorical narratives across various discourse types. The authors argue that metaphorical language acts as a cognitive mechanism for interpreting and highlighting key aspects of sustainable “communication” with the environment. The need to find an effective metaphorical narrative that covers different aspects of environmental security is emphasized. The presented analysis of environmental security metaphors revealed their main types (military, medical, governance metaphors), as well as their disadvantages in providing an adequate view of modern threats due to insufficient information among the population about the need for emergency actions to save the planet.
