NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is developing the Remote Internet Protocol Communication (RIPCom) system, which is a wireless communication system that makes an aircraft look like a network node in the sky. RIPCom provides an Ethernet to Radio Frequency (RF) connection solution for real-time data transmission, and its design allows the end points of the communication system to become nodes on a network with assigned IP addresses. RIPCom’s design is especially suitable for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications, and its versatility makes it valuable for many systems that require a high speed, digital wireless network.

This thesis describes the application of microprocessor based relays with internet communication capabilities in distribution protection systems. The traditional distribution protection system (recloser, sectionalizers) was configured to automatically isolate faulted circuits as well as to reenergize unfaulted loads after a certain number of reclosing operations. Internet Peer-to-Peer communication enables distribution relays to communicate with others connected to the communication network without having a master device. According to the results, the addition of peer-to-peer communication to a traditional distribution protection system significantly enhances its general performance eliminating undesired losses of unfaulted load. Additionally, it reduces outage duration as well as thermal and mechanical stress due to successive re-energizations under faults condition.

As the demands to monitor the health status of structures increase, researchers around the world have proposed several concepts to solve this issue. This research first examines the existing technologies and then works toward a novel structural health monitoring solution. A comprehensive discussion includes major topics from sensor selection and installation to sensing data display. A cyber-physical system combining embedded system, wireless communication, and the Java platform was developed for structural health monitoring. The focus of this system is to continuously monitor structural response and broadcast the information to users worldwide via the Internet. A wireless sensor node is designed to connect up to eight sensor channels. Various sensors have been tested on the sensor node. A data acquisition and repository system was also developed. The use of the Java language makes this system capable of running in virtually any existing computer platform. Distributed design concept expands its functionalities and capabilities. Its graphical user interface offers users a friendly and ease-of-use environment to monitor real-time and historical data in both graphical and numerical ways. Every component of the system has been validated to verify its functionality. Additionally, the whole system has been implemented on a steel pedestrian bridge to observe its performance.

Urban expansion is a key driving force of our modern world. Increasing environmental footprint is an example issue that is directly caused by it. The city of St. Petersburg employs on average almost 500 garbage trucks on a daily basis and spends more than 1 million US Dollars every year to collect, process and manage waste. In order for megacities, such as St. Petersburg, to cope with its effects, new ideas are needed. This seems to be an obvious area in which technology can be used to improve current practices and help save resources. In this study, we investigate how the Internet of Things, blockchain and Quantum Key Distribution systems can be integrated to provide a safe and efficient method for improving the waste management process in the context of Smart City projects. Our implemented simulations in Mininet show that there are some clear challenges with regards to the adoption of blockchain technology in an IoT environment. However, the integration of quantum channels and the use of Quantum Key Distribution within the blockchain infrastructure shows good potential for balancing the advantages and disadvantages of blockchain. With the implemented simulations we demonstrate the superior capabilities of the Proof of Infrastructure blockchain solution, which can facilitate secure transactions within the waste management scenario.

Internet Access logs in a local area network are the most prominent records when the source of an Internet event is traced back. Especially in a case where an illegal activity having originated from your local area network is of concern, it is highly desirable to provide healthy records to the court including the source user and machine identity of the log record in question. To establish the validity of user and machine identity in the log records is known as source authentication. In our study, after the problem of source authentication in each layer is discussed in detail, we argue that the only way to establish a secure source authentication is to implement a system model that unifies low level and upper level defense mechanisms. Hence, in this thesis we propose an Unauthorized Internet Access Blocking System validating the Source Information in Internet Access Logs. The first version of our proposed system, UNIDES, is a proxy based system incorporating advanced switches and mostly deals with the low level source authentication problems. In the second version, we extend our system with SIACS which is an Internet access control system that deals with the user level source authentication problems. By supplementing the classical username-password authentication mechanism with SSL client authentication, SIACS integrates a robust user level authentication scheme into the proposed solution.

Streetlights are usually lit during all dark hours even though vehicles or other objects are not using the road. Instead of wasting energy on keeping the streetlights lit when no vehicles are using the road, the streetlights should be lit whenever vehicles are in proximity of the streetlights and turned off otherwise. A distributed network can be used to handle the communication between streetlights for sharing information about vehicles in proximity. There are streetlight systems that adapt from the environment and handles communication but are still not optimized for country roads with low frequency of vehicles. Therefore, distributed communication for streetlight systems is implemented, by letting the streetlights be a part of a distributed system. Each streetlight is represented with a Zolertia RE-Mote, a sensor for detecting objects and an LED. The representation of the streetlights are wirelessly connected as a mesh network where they can communicate with each other and forward data packets to nodes more far away in the network. The concept of having the streetlights in a distributed system is believed to work and can be considered to be applied on streetlights at country roads to save energy.
Gatlyktor är oftast tända under alla timmar då det är mörkt ute, även fast det inte är något fordon eller annat objekt som använder vägen. Istället för att slösa energi på att ha gatlyktorna tända när det inte är några fordon som använder vägen, bör gatlyktorna vara tända när fordon är i närheten av dem och släckta annars. Automotive transport unavoidably raises safety concerns for drivers, passengers, and indeed, all road users alike. Advancements in vehicle safety technologies have come a long way, and have had a major impact on the reduction of road-related accidents and fatalities. However, as the push towards autonomous vehicle systems gains momentum, assumptions must be avoided about the global application of such technologies.This paper proposes an idea for a road safety alert system, which is realized in the form of small-scale prototype, subsequently tested and evaluated to study its theoretical application to real world scenarios. The system is geared towards developing regions of the world where a reduction in road-related accidents and death is needed most. Reviews of various existing and proposed safety systems within the realm of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are conducted, with a focus on Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and non-V2V applications, which are compared to and contrasted with our proposal.We hope to foster further discussion and research into suitable technologies and their application, in regions of the world that require a different approach when trying to realistically reduce the consistent destructive trend of accidents and fatalities when humans are still behind the wheel.

This project discusses the Home Automation System (HAS), which utilizes the technology of wireless sensor network (WSN). The control mechanism of these systems is based on ZigBee that works in collaboration with mobile and Internet systems. The input of these devices is quite different, which creates challenges for the creators of the system. Certain household devices are very easy to control while others have comparatively complex inputs. The system should be able to control both types of devices through a singular interface. This challenge is overcome by implementation of the wireless sensor nodes in a HAS. A highly important advantage of using ZigBee’s monitoring system is energy conservation, and reduction in power costs. Utilization of HAS leads to a decrease in consumption of water, electricity and other energy inputs, a reduction of the cost of utilities, and the improvement of security features. The paper demonstrates that Home Automation System has numerous applications beyond control of lighting, temperature and security cameras in a household. The technology opens up frontiers for numerous other applications in the area of home assistance and even in home health care.

This dissertation studies the effects of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on the banking sector and the payments system. It provides insight into how technology-induced changes occur, by exploring both the nature and scope of main technology innovations and evidencing their economic implications for banks and payment systems. Some parts in the dissertation are descriptive. They summarise the main technological developments in the field of finance and link them to economic policies. These parts are complemented with sections of the study that focus on assessing the extent of technology application to banking and payment activities. Finally, it includes also some work which borrows from the economic literature on banking. The need for an interdisciplinary approach arises from the complexity of the topic and the rapid path of change to which it is subject.
The first chapter provides an overview of the influence of developments in ICT on the evolution of financial services and international capital flows. We include main indicators and discuss innovation in the financial sector, exchange rates and international capital flows. The chapter concludes with impact analysis and policy options regarding the international financial architecture, some monetary policy issues and the role of international institutions.
The second chapter is a technology assessment study that focuses on the relationship between technology and money. The application of technology to payments systems is transforming the way we use money and, in some instances, is blurring the definition of what constitutes money. This chapter surveys the developments in electronic forms of payment and their relationship to the banking system. It also analyses the challenges posed by electronic money for regulators and policy makers, and in particular the opportunities created by two simultaneous processes: the Economic and Monetary Union and the increasing use of electronic payment instruments.
The third chapter deals with the implications of developments in ICT on relationship banking. The financial intermediation literature explains relationship banking as a type of financial intermediation characterised by proprietary information and multiple interactions with customers. This form of banking is important for the financing of small and medium-sized enterprises. We discuss the effects of ICT on the banking sector as a whole and then apply these developments to the case of relationship banking.
The fourth chapter is an empirical study of the effects of technology on the banking business, using a sample of data from the Spanish banking industry. The design of the study is based on some of the events described in the previous chapters, and also draws from the economic literature on banking. The study shows that developments in information management have differential effects on wholesale and retail banking activities.
Finally, the last chapter is a technology assessment study on electronic payments systems in Spain and the European Union. It contains an analysis of existing payment systems and ongoing or planned initiatives in Spain. It forms part of a broader project comprising a series of country-specific analyses covering ten European countries. The main issues raised across the countries serve as the starting point to discuss implications of the development of electronic money for regulation and policies, and in particular, for monetary-policy making.

IOT devices have the potential to improve asset lifecycle optimization because of their ability to provide relevant real time data to high level applications. This data with minimal latency can assist asset managers to control the behaviour of assets and asset users to optimize asset lifecycle cost. There are many environments that require asset tracking devices but this design focussed on motor vehicles with auxiliary functions and apparatus. This research work documented the design of an asset tracking device built and tested on a 32.bit microcontroller platform with built-in CAN peripheral. This design resolved handling multiple serial interfaces collating data simultaneously concatenating this data and transmitting the data via GPRS interface as a single UDP sentence. Apart from interfacing various serial interfaces to the Stm24f4 this design also implemented a Wireless module as well as a multichannel ADC Module. This design was accomplished by researching and implementing software techniques as well as researching the hardware/firmware in terms of DMA and Nested Vector Interrupt Controller of the STM32 devices. The solution that this design will accomplish is to provide the industry an asset-tracking device with data capturing functionality capable of delivering the above needs at reasonable data cost. The device designed in this thesis is the client device of asset tracking network. This design was accomplished on a proof of concept basis delivering built hardware in the form of various application modules interfaced to a 32 –bit microcontroller via uart, SPI and CAN.

Providing affordable Internet access to rural populations in large developing countries to aid economic and social progress, using various non-conventional techniques has been a topic of active research recently. The main obstacle in providing fiber-optic based terrestrial Internet links to remote villages is the cost involved in laying the cable network and disproportionately low rate of return on investment due to low density of paid users. The conventional alternative to this is providing Internet access using geostationary satellite links, which can prove commercially infeasible in predominantly cost-driven rural markets in developing economies like India or China due to high access cost per user.

A low-cost derivative of the conventional satellite-based Internet access system can be developed by utilizing an aging geostationary satellite nearing the end of its active life, allowing it to enter an inclined geosynchronous orbit by limiting station keeping to only east-west maneuvers to save fuel. Eliminating the need for individual satellite receiver modules by using one centrally located earth station per village and providing last mile connectivity using Wi-Fi can further reduce the access cost per user. A Ku band system design for rural India based on this concept, using an Intelsat 906 satellite is proposed in this thesis. The path of the satellite and the tracking requirements at village stations are determined. Components required for various blocks of the system are defined. Modulation schemes, FEC, data rates, number of customers to be served, link availability and outage statistics are presented. Quantitative analysis using link budgets and ITU rain models are provided. An optimized system design and a commercial deployment model are suggested which show the system is economically feasible.

The aim of this thesis work has been to explore the state of the art of the Internet of Things, IoT. Focus has been put on the role of communication protocols, or middleware, that enable communication between node and hub in the IoT architecture. A literature study has been carried out, where the state of the art of the IoT has been studied. A comparison of six different pieces of middleware has been made, to use as a reference when choosing between communication protocols for a distributed system. An irrigation system was to be implemented as an example application. It was implemented in the programming language Golang, using Websockets for communication between a standard laptop computer and a Raspberry Pi embedded sensor node. The conclusion of this thesis is that the architecture, hardware and software design for IoT systems all vary greatly depending on the specific demands of the application. Distributed systems, having been used for decades in industrial applications, are now increasingly used in many different fields. A wider adoption and expansion of a standardised and secure IoT has great potential to leverage a moderate investment, increasing efficiency, security and quality of life globally.
Syftet med detta examensarbete har varit att utforska state of the art för Internet of Things (sakernas internet, IoT). Arbetet har till viss del fokuserats på de kommunikationsprotokoll som möjliggör kommunikation mellan nod och server.En litteraturstudie har utförts, där referensramar har etablerats för IoT. Sex olika kommunikationsprotokoll har jämförts för att skapa ett underlag för design av IoT-system. Ett bevattningssystem har utvecklats som ett exempelsystem. Det implementerades i programmeringsspråket Golang, och använder Websockets för kommunikation mellan en standardlaptop och en inbäddad Raspberry Pi-nod. Slutsatsen av arbetet är att arkitektur, hårdvara och mjukvarudesign för IoT-system i hög gradkommer bero av kraven som ställs av de olika användningsfallen. Distribuerade system har använts inom industrin i decennier, men växer nu snabbt inom andra fält. Ett standardiserat och säkert sakernas internet har potential att ge en hävstångseffekt, så att små investeringar kan ge stora förbättringar av effektivitet, säkerhet och livskvalité.

O sistema é bastante flexível e foi testado em operações reais no monitoramento de temperatura ambiente. Os resultados obtidos são altamente satisfatórios e mostra que o sistema pode servir de base para aplicações em diferentes áreas onde a telemetria seja indispensável.

Resumo: A aquisição de dados tem evoluído de forma significativa nos últimos anos e passa a ser indispensável em várias aplicações nas áreas de engenharia, agricultura, medicina, aeronáutica, etc. O estado da arte nessa área envolve o uso de sistemas de comunicação sem fio e da internet. Neste trabalho é apresentado um sistema moderno de aquisição de dados, que é baseado em uma comunicação sem fio via rede GSM (Global Mobile for System), com conexão via Internet através de um sistema de telefonia celular GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), monitoramento de dados via página Web (World Web Browser) e interface de aplicação com base em um microcontrolador. O sistema é bastante flexível e foi testado em operações reais no monitoramento de temperatura ambiente. Os resultados obtidos são altamente satisfatórios e mostra que o sistema pode servir de base para aplicações em diferentes áreas onde a telemetria seja indispensável.

L'Internet des objets est un nouveau concept dans lequel la connexion Internet s'étend aux objets du monde réel pour les faire communiquer les uns avec les autres. La communication dans un système IoT peut être établie en utilisant des réseaux cellulaires ou des réseaux utilisant des fréquences libres.Il existe de nombreuses normes de communication pour les applications IoT. Il existe également de nombreuses techniques de modulation. Il n'y a pas une unique solution parfaite qui réponde à tous les besoins et toutes les exigences dans tous les domaines. Le choix du bon standard de communication et de la technique de modulation est spécifique pour chaque cas d'utilisation et dépend de chaque application.Au cours de cette recherche, au lieu de présenter une nouvelle norme de communication ou une nouvelle technique de modulation, nous avons amélioré la sensibilité du récepteur tout en utilisant la technique de modulation et les normes de communication existantes. L'amélioration de la sensibilité du récepteur augmente le bilan de liaison. Un meilleur bilan de liaison, dans certaines conditions de propagation, augmente la distance de communication.Le moyennage synchronisé a été proposé et étudié en profondeur en tant que technique efficace pour améliorer le rapport signal sur bruit en augmentant l'énergie du signal sans modifier la puissance du signal. Cependant, le système de synchronisation limite l'efficacité du moyennage synchronisé. Le problème de synchronisation peut être divisé en synchronisation en phase et synchronisation en fréquence. Toute variation de fréquence de l'oscillateur local induite par le bruit de phase) a un impact sur la synchronisation. L’impact du bruit de phase sur le modulateur MSK a été étudié dans ce travail. Une méthode innovante a ensuite été développée pour combiner le processus de synchronisation avec le moyennage.Différentes normes de communication radio et les techniques conventionnelles basées sur les réseaux LPWA ont été présentées dans le premier chapitre. Les bases théoriques de la méthode de moyennage synchronisé (en télécommunications) et les méthodologies de simulation sont présentées au chapitre deux. Le problème de synchronisation ainsi que les différentes solutions pour l’améliorer ont été présentés au chapitre trois.Les performances de la méthode de moyennage synchronisé avec et sans nouvelles techniques de synchronisation ont été mesurées et les résultats sont présentés au chapitre quatre. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new approach in which the Internet connection extends into real-world objects to make them communicate with each other. The communication for IoT can be established using cellular networks or the licence-free frequencies in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands. There are many communication standards for IoT applications. There are also many modulation techniques. Nevertheless, there is no perfect solution for all the needs and requirements in all domains. The choice of the right communication standard and modulation technique is unique for each use-case and depends on each specific application.In this research, instead of developing a new communication standard or a new modulation technique, we improved the receiver sensitivity while using the existing modulation technique and communication standards. Improving the receiver sensitivity increases the link budget. A better link budget, under certain propagation conditions, increases the communication distance. Different radio communication standards and conventional techniques based on Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) are presented in the first chapter.The theoretical basis of the time-synchronous averaging (TSA) method as a powerful signal processing method to improve the sensitivity of the RF receiver and the simulation methodologies are presented in chapter two. We also study the impact of phase noise on the MSK modulator in this chapter.The synchronisation problem, as well as the different solutions to improve it, are presented in chapter three. Synchronisation in phase and frequency are studied separately, and an innovative method has been developed to combine the synchronisation process with averaging.The performance of the synchronised averaging method with and without new synchronisation techniques was measured, and the results are presented in chapter four. The processing gain from the theoretical calculation is compared with the measurement results too

MySpace is a type of "social networking" website where people meet, socialize, and create friendships. The way MySpace members, particularly younger individuals, interact online underscores the changing nature of mass media. Media system dependency states that individuals become reliant on media in their daily life because of fundamental human goals. This reliance, termed a dependency, leads to repeated use. Media system dependency was applied in the current study to explain how and why individuals became habitual MySpace users. To attain results a survey was administered to a convenience sampling of 401 adult undergraduates at the University of Central Florida. Members reported MySpace dependency had a moderate correlation to MySpace use, and they actively used the website an average of 1.3 hours of use per day. Results indicated members use MySpace to primarily satisfy play and interaction orientation dependencies. MySpace use was found to have a correlation with number of MySpace friends. "Number of friends created" in turn had a correlation with MySpace dependency, as people returned to interact with their friends. Individual factors were also found to be a source of influence in MySpace dependency. These individual factors were demographics, psychological factors related to use of the Internet, and psychological factors related to use of MySpace. Factors related to MySpace, extroversion and self-disclosure, were positively correlated with intensity of dependency. The influence of factors related to the Internet was partly supported; computer self-efficacy was not significantly related to MySpace dependency, while computer anxiety was significantly related to MySpace dependency. Speed of connection to the Internet and available time to use the Internet were not related to MySpace dependency. Additionally, significant differences were found between genders in overall dependency, extroversion, self-disclosure, computer anxiety, and computer self-efficacy. These findings provide evidence that MySpace members were little, if at all, constrained by factors related to use of the Internet, but were attracted to the websites for similar reasons as real-life relationships. Finally, MySpace is just one of the large number of online resources that are predominantly social, such as email, message boards, and online chat. This study found that through a "technology cluster" MySpace members use these other social innovations more frequently than non-members. However, members also used significantly more non-social innovations, which may indicate that MySpace members are part of a larger technology cluster than anticipated or perhaps are in the same category of innovation adopter.

The growing size of raw data and the lack of internet communication technology to keep up with that growth is introducing unique challenges to academic researchers. This is especially true for those residing in rural areas or countries with sub-par telecommunication infrastructure. In this project I investigate the usefulness of cloud computing technology, data analysis workflow languages and portable computation for institutions that generate data. I introduce the concept of a software solution that could be used to simplify the way that researchers execute their analysis on data sets at remote sources, rather than having to move the data. The scope of this project involved conceptualising and designing a software system to simplify the use of a cloud environment as well as implementing a working prototype of said software for the OpenStack cloud computing platform. I conclude that it is possible to improve the performance of research pipelines by removing the need for researchers to have operating system or cloud computing knowledge and that utilising technologies such as this can ease the burden of moving data.

Context: In Saudi Arabia, distance-learning plays a vital role in the female higher education system. This system is considered unique among all the world’s countries because, for religious reasons, intermixing of the genders is not allowed within most educational settings in Saudi society. This system is currently facing a problem with an overflow of female students in higher educational institutions as these institutions suffer from a lack of female faculty members. To resolve this problem, all universities in Saudi Arabia utilise synchronous distance learning technologies such as video and audio conferences technologies for the delivery of subjects by male faculty members to female students, as this is the only authorised way for male faculty to teach female students. Although this method has been used in Saudi Arabia continuously since 1970, no study has addressed the perceptions of female students, regarding the problems they face whilst studying, through such technologies or proposed any solution for these problems. Aim: The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of female students at King Saud University regarding the difficulties and barriers they encounter in the distance learning classrooms that use video conferencing technology. This study also proposes feasible solutions for the most common problems. It has developed an innovative interactive communication system, CommEasy, based on the internet and Wi-Fi technologies for handheld devices and uses this system to enhance communication and participation in distance learning. Method: The research questions are answered by applying a mixture of quantitative and qualitative approaches that have been selected according to the nature of the research. A case study research design was chosen to address all the research questions related to KSU. Identifying the perceptions of female students about the problems they encounter in distance learning classrooms was gathered through a questionnaire with five main parts: classroom physical design, classroom physical features, technical support, communication and participation with male instructors and classroom management. Each part used a number of questions to measure the students' perceptions and the students were asked to respond to each question using a five-point Likert scale. Proposing feasible solutions for the problems reported by students required using a mixture of methods, such as observations, structured interviews and surveys. An incremental software development approach was used to develop the CommEasy tool that was used in this thesis and the quasi-experimental method was used to evaluate this tool in the actual learning environment. Results: The results of the thesis presented the perceptions of students towards the components of the distance-learning classrooms and showed all the satisfactory and unsatisfactory components. It produced a list of strategies for effective designing of the distance-learning classroom that uses video conference technology, produced a new physical design for the distance-learning classrooms that used video conference technologies, provided a set of feasible solutions for the problems identified and finally, showed that the CommEasy system has a positive impact, in supporting communication in the distance-learning classroom, leading to an increased level of student participation with instructors, as well as solving most of the problems students were faced with in this regard. Conclusions: in summary, the outcome of this thesis should provide both researchers and decision makers with an insight into the problems facing students in distance-learning, as well as providing them with feasible solutions for these problems. This thesis will serve as a basis for further research in this field to be conducted in Saudi Arabia.

Context. Internet of Things (IoT) is an extension of the Internet, which now includes physical objects of the real world. The main purpose of Internet of Things is to increase a quality of people’s daily life. A smart home is one of the promising areas in the Internet of Things which increases rapidly. It allows users to control their home devices anytime from any location in the world using Internet connectivity and automate their work based on the physical environment conditions and user preferences. The main issues in deploying the architecture of IoT are the security of the communication between constrained low-power devices in the home network and device performance. Battery lifetime is a key QoS parameter of a battery-powered IoT device which limits the level of security and affects the performance of the communication. These issues have been deepened with the spread of cheap and easy to use microcontrollers which are used by electronic enthusiasts to build their own home automation projects. Objectives. In this study, we investigated wireless communication technologies used in low-power and low-bandwidth home area networks to determine which of them are most suitable for smart home applications. We also investigated the correlation between security, power consumption of constrained IoT device, and performance of wireless communication based on a model of a home automation system with a sensor node. Sensor node was implemented using Arduino Nano microcontroller and RF 433 MHz wireless communication module. Methods. To achieve the stated objectives of this research following methods were chosen: literature review to define common applications and communication technologies used in a smart home scenario and their requirements, comparison of wireless communication technologies in smart home, study of Arduino microcontroller technology, design and simulation of a part of  home automation project based on Arduino, experimental measurements  of execution time and power consumption of Arduino microcontroller with RF 433 MHz wireless module when transmitting data with different levels of security, and analysis of experimental results. Results. In this research, we presented a detailed comparison of ZigBee, WiFi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, and ANT communication technologies used in a smart home in terms of the main characteristics. Furthermore, we considered performance, power consumption, and security. A model of a home automation system with a sensor node based on Arduino Nano was described with sleep management and performance evaluation. The results show that the battery lifetime of Arduino in a battery-powered sensor node scenario is determined by the communication speed, sleep management, and affected by encryption. Conclusions. The advanced communication strategy can be used to minimize the power consumption of the device and increase the efficiency of the communication. In that case, our security measures will reduce the productivity and lifetime of the sensor node not significantly. It’s also possible to use symmetric encryption with smaller block size.

La perte de conjoints et d’amis, la réduction progressive de leur mobilité et l’éloignement de plus en plus fréquent des enfants, plongent souvent les personnes âgées dans un isolement qui peut générer des dépressions qui ont à leur tour un impact négatif sur la santé. Des études médicales ont même démontré que l’isolement social augmente le risque de mortalité des personnes âgées. Alors que de nombreux programmes de recherche s’intéressent à développer une variété de solutions technologiques liées à la fragilité physique et/ou cognitive des personnes âgées pour qu’ils puissent rester le plus longtemps possible à domicile, nous nous intéressons à leur fragilité sociale qui limite leurs capacités à rester en contact avec la société. Nous émettons l’hypothèse que les technologies de l’information ont un rôle important à jouer pour apporter une solution à l’isolement social des personnes âgées. Mais concevoir des services adaptés et s’assurer de leur appropriation restent des questions ouvertes, auxquelles nous tentons de proposer des réponses, à la fois au niveau méthodologique et instrumental. Nous présentons une démarche de conception de services pour les personnes âgées, qui s’appuie sur la participation des futurs utilisateurs dans le cadre d’un «Living Lab». Nous illustrons cette démarche grâce à notre participation à un projet européen dont l’objectif est de développer des applications de télévision sociale pour contribuer au développement des interactions sociales entre pairs
Encouraging seniors to stay at home as long as possible is associated with a higher risk of social isolation. Extensive researches have established the strong relationship between social isolation and health, considering social engagement as an important component influencing psychological well-being and self-esteem of elderly people. In other words, aging well at home cannot be reduced to the management of physical and cognitive frailties and technologies should also tackle the quality of life of the elderly by fostering their social interactions especially for those who are living alone. We postulate that ICTs could alleviate elderly loneliness, in order to cope with their social frailty. However, designing appropriate services and ensure their adoption by the elderly remain open questions, which we try to provide answers at both methodological and instrumental level. We propose an approach to design services for the elderly based on the participation of the future users as part of a "Living Lab". We illustrate this approach by our participation in a European project aiming at developing and evaluating Social TV services. The objective is to foster social interactions among peers to enhance or restore social ties, with the goal of increasing psychological well-being and self-esteem of the elderly living alone

This qualitative study explored the overall impact of training HVAC technicians using the SightPros-VirTechs system for remote, wireless, internet video assistance at a small HVAC company, Metro Environmental. John Thomason, the president/co-owner developed a website and a new SightPros communication tool that allows wireless, one-on-one, just-in-time, high-quality, video-monitored instructions between an expert at one site and a technician at another site. Metro Environmental successfully used the SightPros-VirTechs system to train a new apprentice remotely. The apprentice and expert changed their normal and routine physical activities because the expert worked remotely and the apprentice worked on-site. Within just a few months, the apprentice proved competent enough to go to customer accounts without more experienced technicians nearby. The technicians express excitement about the SightPros communication tool as a way to contact remote experts whenever needed. The customer and business contacts also give good reviews and suggest other benefits. The expert permanently captures the communications so the company can use the saved video for many applications, especially training. The dissertation provides a list of recommendations to trainers/educators for similar applications.

Economic incentives and the need to efficiently deliver Internet have led to the growth of Internet eXchange Points (IXPs), i.e., the interconnection networks through which a multitude of possibly competing network entities connect to each other with the goal of exchanging traffic. At IXPs, the exchange of traffic between two or more member networks is dictated by the Border gateway Protocol (BGP), i.e., the inter-domain routing protocol used by network operators to exchange reachability information about IP prefix destinations. There is a common “honest-closed-world” assumption at IXPs that two IXP members exchange data traffic only if they have exchanged the corresponding reachability information via BGP. This state of affairs severely hinders security as any IXP member can send traffic to another member without having received a route from that member. Filtering traffic according to BGP routes would solve the problem. However, IXP members can install filters but the number of filtering rules required at a large IXP can easily exceed the capacity of the network devices. In addition, an IXP cannot filter this type of traffic as the exchanged BGP routes between two members are not visible to the IXP itself. In this thesis, we evaluated the design space between reactive and proactive approaches for guaranteeing consistency between the BGP control-plane and the data-plane. In a reactive approach, an IXP member operator monitors, collects, and analyzes the incoming traffic to detect if any illegitimate traffic exists whereas, in a proactive approach, an operator configures its network devices to filter any illegitimate traffic without the need to perform any monitoring. We focused on proactive approaches because of the increased security of the IXP network and its inherent simplified network management. We designed and implemented a solution to this problem by leveraging the emerging Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm, which enables the programmability of the forwarding tables by separating the controland dataplanes. Our approach only installs rules in the data-plane that allow legitimate traffic to be forwarded, dropping anything else. As hardware switches have high performance but low memory space, we decided to make also use of software switches. A “heavy-hitter” module detects the forwarding rules carrying most of the traffic and installs them into the hardware switch. The remaining forwarding rules are installed into the software switches.We evaluated the prototype in an emulated testbed using the Mininet virtualnetwork environment. We analyzed the security of our system with the help of static verification tests, which confirmed compliance with security policies. The results reveal that with even just 10% of the rules installed in the hardware switch, the hardware switch directly filter 95% of the traffic volume with nonuniform Internet-like traffic distribution workloads. We also evaluated the latency and throughput overheads of the system, though the results are limited by the accuracy of the emulated environment. The scalability experiments show that, with 10K forwarding rules, the system takes around 40 seconds to install and update the data plane. This is due to inherent slowness of emulated environment and limitations of the POX controller, which is coded in Python.

Vi fokuserade på proaktiva tillvägagångssätt på grund av den ökade säkerheten för IXP-nätverket och dess inneboende förenklad nätverkshantering. Vi konstruerade och genomförde en lösning på detta problem genom att utnyttja det nya SDN-paradigmet (Software Defined Networking), vilket möjliggör programmerbarheten hos vidarebefordringsborden genom att separera kontrolloch dataplanerna. Vårt tillvägagångssätt installerar bara regler i dataplanet som tillåter legitim trafik att vidarebefordras, släppa allt annat. Eftersom hårdvaruomkopplare har hög prestanda men lågt minne, bestämde vi oss för att även använda programvaruomkopplare. En "heavy-hitter" -modul detekterar vidarebefordringsreglerna som transporterar större delen av trafiken och installerar dem i hårdvaruomkopplaren. De återstående spolningsreglerna installeras i programvaruomkopplarna.Vi utvärderade prototypen i en emulerad testbädd med hjälp av virtuella nätverksmiljö Mininet. Vi analyserade säkerheten för vårt system med hjälp av statiska verifieringsprov, vilket bekräftade överensstämmelse med säkerhetspolicyerna. Resultaten visar att med bara 10% av de regler som installerats i hårdvaruomkopplaren filtrerar hårdvaruomkopplaren direkt 95% av trafikvolymen med ojämn Internetliknande trafikfördelningsarbete. This report is about implementing an Internet of Things (IoT) system that is meant to measure the water quality of the Nissan river located in Halmstad. The system measures the temperature, pH value, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity of the water. The project is named Catfish, and the authors of the report are in the Data and Sensors team. The purpose of the Data and Sensors team is to program the prototype to collect the specified environmental values, combining all functionalities of the prototype in the main code, and sending the data wirelessly to a database in real-time, including creating the database. To collect the data, two Arduino microcontrollers and sensors from DFRobot are used. For the central computing, a Raspberry Pi is used. To send the data in real-time, a 4G dongle is connected to the Raspberry Pi and to transmit the data, the protocol TCP/IP is used. In order to create a local database, SQLite is used, and for the database server, MariaDB is used. The project has succeeded to collect data from the specified sensors, send the data wirelessly over the Internet with the help of a 4G modem, and store the data in a database on a remote temporary server. However, the sensors are not calibrated due to lack of time, which means the data received from the sensors can not be trusted. The server that stores the data is a temporary server implemented by the Data and Sensors team since there was no other place to store the data.
Denna rapporten handlar om en implementation av ett Internet of Things (IoT) system som är menad för att mäta vattenkvalitéen i Nissan i Halmstad. Systemet mäter temperaturen, pH värde, grumlighet, upplöst syre, totalmängden upplösta ämnen och elektrisk konduktivitet i vattnet. Detta projektet heter Catfish och författarna av denna rapport är del av Data och Sensor gruppen. Syftet av Data och Sensor gruppen är att programmera prototypen till att samla de specifierade miljövärdena, kombinera prototypens funktioner i huvud-koden och att skicka datan till en databas trådlöst och i real-tid, vilket inkulderar att skapa databasen.  För att samla datan används två Arduino mikrokontrollers och sensorer från DFRobot. För den centrala datoranvändningen används en Raspberry Pi. För att skicka data i realtid används ett 4G modem som kopplas till Raspberry Pi:n och skickar datan till servern genom TCP/IP. Skapandet av en lokal databas är gjord i SQLite och för databasen i servern används MariaDB.  Projektet har lyckats med att samla data från de specifierade sensorerna, skicka datan trådlöst över Internetet med hjälp av ett 4G modem och lagra datan i en databas i en temporär fjärrserver. Sensorerna är dock inte kalibrerade på grund av tidsbrist, vilket betyder att man inte kan lita på datan från sensorerna. Servern där datan lagras är temporär och implementerad av Data och Sensor gruppen eftersom det inte fanns någon annanstans att lagra datan.

The world is getting busier and more crowded each year. Due to this fact resources such as public transport, available energy, and usable space are becoming congested and require vast amounts of logistical support. As of February 2018, nearly 95% of Americans own a mobile cell phone according to the Pew Research Center. These devices are consistently broadcasting their presents to other devices. By leveraging this data to provide occupational awareness of high traffic areas such as public transit stops, buildings, etc logistic efforts can be streamline to best suit the dynamics of the population. With the rise of The Internet of Things, a scalable low-cost occupancy monitoring system can be deployed to collect this broadcasted data and present it to logistics in real time. Simple IoT devices such as the Raspberry Pi, wireless cards capable of passive monitoring, and the utilization of specialized software can provide this capability. Additionally, this combination of hardware and software can be integrated in a way to be as simple as a typical plug and play set up making system deployment quick and easy. This effort details the development and integration work done to deliver a working product acting as a foundation to build upon. Machine learning algorithms such as k-Nearest-Neighbors were also developed to estimate a mobile device's approximate location inside a building.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The perceived quality of Voice over Internet Protocol (IP) (VoIP) communication relies on the network which is used to transport voice packets between the end points. Variable network characteristics such as bandwidth, delay and loss are critical for real-time voice traffic and are not always guaranteed by networks. It is important for network service providers to determine the Quality of Service (QoS) it provides to its customers. The solution proposed here is to predict the perceived quality of a VoIP call, in real-time by using network statistics. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a network analysis tool, which gathers meaningful statistics from network traffic. These statistics will then be used for predicting the perceived quality of a VoIP call. This study includes the investigation and deployment of two main components. Firstly, to determine call quality, it is necessary to extract the voice streams from captured network traffic. The extracted sound files can then be analysed by various VoIP quality models to determine the perceived quality of a VoIP call. The second component is the analysis of network characteristics. Loss, delay and jitter are all known to influence perceived call quality. These characteristics are, therefore, determined from the captured network traffic and compared with the call quality. Using the statistics obtained by the repeated comparison of the call quality and network characteristics, a network specific algorithm is generated. This Non-Intrusive Quality Prediction Algorithm (NIQPA) uses basic characteristics such as time of day, delay, loss and jitter to predict the quality of a real-time VoIP call quickly in a non-intrusive way. The realised algorithm for each network will differ, because every network is different. Prediction results can then be used to adapt either the network (more bandwidth, packet prioritising) or the voice stream (error correction, change VoIP codecs) to assure QoS.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die kwaliteit van spraak oor die internet (VoIP) kommunikasie is afhanklik van die netwerk wat gebruik word om spraakpakkies te vervoer tussen die eindpunte. Netwerk eienskappe soos bandwydte, vertraging en verlies is krities vir intydse spraakverkeer en kan nie altyd gewaarborg word deur netwerkverskaffers nie. Dit is belangrik vir die netwerk diensverskaffers om die vereiste gehalte van diens (QoS) te verskaf aan hul kliënte. Die oplossing wat hier voorgestel word is om die kwaliteit van ’n VoIP oproep intyds te voorspel, deur middel van die netwerkstatistieke. Die belangrikste doel van hierdie projek is om ’n netwerk analise-instrument te ontwikkel. Die instrument versamel betekenisvolle statistiek deur van netwerkverkeer gebruik te maak. Opinion leaders are important political players who bridge the gap between the political elite and the general public. Traditionally opinion leaders use social pressure and social support via interpersonal communication to personally influence the opinions, attitudes and behaviours of their everyday associates (who make up the general public). However, in a hybrid media system opinion leaders have access to added channels which mean they can communicate with audiences beyond their everyday associates and/or engage in non-interpersonal interactions, potentially setting the stage for opinion leaders to become more influential since they can access more members of the general public. Conversely, since the ability of opinion leaders to influence others traditionally relies on strong social bonds, even if audiences are accessible for information transfer, the lack of social connection could mean influence does not flow. As such, opinion leaders' channel choice in a hybrid media system is potentially very important. To investigate the patterns of channel use as well as motivations for, and impacts of, channel choices by opinion leaders, a two phase mixed-methods study is employed. Phase one includes online social network analysis of the #CDNpoli (Canadian politics) hashtag on Twitter and an online survey. Phase two investigates the communication practices of 21 specific digitally enabled opinion leaders drawn from the #CDNpoli network. Two hour in-depth interviews are paired with visualizations of the participants trace data. Telephone interviews with associates (alters) of the primary interviewee were conducted (N=27). This design is therefore responsive to the multi-channel reality of a hybrid media system and improves upon large scale and single channel studies which are most common in this line of research. Now strategic and, at times, impersonal, a fundamental shift in how influence is derived challenges theories of social influence and information dissemination. Two types of strategic opinion leaders emerge: enthusiasts and champions. Their strategies contribute to a wider trend - a "just-in-time" informed citizenry - where those who do not opt in to receiving messages from the political elite only get information at the last possible minute, such as during a scandal or an election. Future research and communication strategy must be sensitive to the varied aims and tactics of digitally enabled opinion leaders as well as the subsequent inconsistent relationship between the uninformed and their political system.

The aim of this study has been to find out how the community in the remote areas of South Africa access government information. The study is based on four villages, two in the Northern Cape Province (Heuningvlei and Galeshewe) and two in Limpopo Province (The Oaks and Finala). A quantitative design was used. Open and closed-ended questionnaires were used to collect data from the community. Out of 200 questionnaires distributed only 144 responses were received. Responses in the questionnaires were tabulated, coded and processed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) programme. Based on the analysis in Table 4.13, the study showed that 44 percent of the sampled community have access to information through Television which they classified as technology. Shortage of telecentres, distance to telecentres, age, lack of education, monthly income, infrastructure and transport cost were some of the important factors contributing to a lack of access to information. Some of the findings are that most of the telecentres are located far from towns, more than 7 kilometres from the village. Ideally, telecentres should be located near the community, within a short walking distance. It is recommended that provision/establishment for easy access to information and communication services by the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA) in the remote areas in the Northern Cape and Limpopo province is strongly considered for implementation. This will overcome the gap that exists between the urban and semi-urban communities regarding access to human rights information such as rights to life, equality, freedom of speech, assembly and access to information. It is also assumed that the implementation of telecentres and Internet Cafes, in order to facilitate the adoption of e-government information by people residing in remote areas (semi-urban areas) such as Heuningvlei, Galeshewe, The Oaks and Finala will contribute to better access to human rights. The study also recommends that the service costs charged by the telecentre and Internet Cafes should not be expensive. This will assist the community to afford to pay Internet services. Information is important for decision-making. For this reason, it is recommended that continued campaigns on awareness about the mportance of access to information through telecentres and Internet Cafes should be conducted.

Social network sites have recently become extremely popular online destinations as they offer users easy ways to build and maintain their relationships with each other. Consequently, students, lecturers, teachers, parents and businesses are using these tools to communicate with each other in a fast and cost-effective manner. However, literature suggests that the full potential of social network sites has not yet been revealed since users are still battling to overcome the various negative characteristics surrounding these sites. A framework for appropriate use of these sites is needed so that users are able to overcome these negative aspects, allowing them to be more effective and use the sites successfully. The goal of this research is to construct a framework for perceived successful use of social computing tools in educational institutions. This framework will include critical success factors that need to be adopted by users in order to develop the positive aspects of social computing, while at the same time overcoming the disadvantages experienced by users. Factors for successful use were derived from the literature and consolidated into a theoretical framework in order to understand the factors that drive successful use of social network sites. Measures used to test successful use of social network sites were also derived from these sources and were included in the same theoretical framework; these measures allow users to evaluate the extent of perceived successful use of social network sites. This framework was tested empirically by means of a pilot study and online survey, and revised according to the results of the survey. The factors were identified using Cronbach alpha coefficients (in the pilot study) and exploratory factor analysis to confirm the reliability of the scales developed. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient analysis, t-tests and Pearson Chi-Square tests were used to measure the relationships amongst the variables in the framework proposed in this research. The factors influencing perceived successful use of social network sites were identified by the empirical study as: • Privacy and Security Settings need to be enabled. These are split into: - Settings: content that users allow others to see - Viewers: people who are allowed onto a user's profile • It is necessary for users to practise Legal and Acceptable Activities when using social network sites • Suspect Information needs to be checked before sharing it with others • Personal and Professional Time needs to be separated to ensure that work is completed before social activities occur • Users need to practise Professional and Ethical Behaviour • Users need to have a Positive Attitude when using social network sites • Usability of sites affects their success. This includes: - technical capacity (broadband) - ease of use - functionality (range of features and functions) • Current and Controversial Issues need to be discussed on social network sites. The extent to which social network sites are being used successfully can be evaluated by the presence of the following measures: • Range of Content must be available to users. This includes: - Content displayed on profiles - Viewers able to visit profiles • Visitors Behaviour is monitored and no unwanted visitors are present users' profiles • Social Contracts found on sites are followed by users • Critical Thinking Skills and Accurate Information are displayed by users • Work is completed before social activities occur on sites • A Variety of Users is present on sites • Collaboration between people as well as variety of opinions exist on sites • Social Capital (well-being) is present after users have been on sites • Learning and Advising Skills are enhanced on sites. The framework developed provides users with a useful instrument to overcome the negative characteristics associated with social network sites. If used successfully, social network sites can offer lecturers and students a unique method to develop their relationship, creating a positive learning experience.

The tremendous increase in usage and complexity of modern communication and network systems connected to the Internet, places demands upon security management to protect organisations' sensitive data and resources from malicious intrusion. Malicious attacks by intruders and hackers exploit flaws and weakness points in deployed systems through several sophisticated techniques that cannot be prevented by traditional measures, such as user authentication, access controls and firewalls. Consequently, automated detection and timely response systems are urgently needed to detect abnormal activities by monitoring network traffic and system events. Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) and Network Intrusion Prevention Systems (NIPS) are technologies that inspect traffic and diagnose system behaviour to provide improved attack protection. The current implementation of intrusion detection systems (commercial and open-source) lacks the scalability to support the massive increase in network speed, the emergence of new protocols and services. Multi-giga networks have become a standard installation posing the NIDS to be susceptible to resource exhaustion attacks. The research focuses on two distinct problems for the NIDS: missing alerts due to packet loss as a result of NIDS performance limitations; and the huge volumes of generated alerts by the NIDS overwhelming the security analyst which makes event observation tedious. A methodology for analysing alerts using a proposed framework for alert correlation has been presented to provide the security operator with a global view of the security perspective. Missed alerts are recovered implicitly using a contextual technique to detect multi-stage attack scenarios. This is based on the assumption that the most serious intrusions consist of relevant steps that temporally ordered. The pre- and post- condition approach is used to identify the logical relations among low level alerts. The alerts are aggregated, verified using vulnerability modelling, and correlated to construct multi-stage attacks. A number of algorithms have been proposed in this research to support the functionality of our framework including: alert correlation, alert aggregation and graph reduction. These algorithms have been implemented in a tool called Multi-stage Attack Recognition System (MARS) consisting of a collection of integrated components. The system has been evaluated using a series of experiments and using different data sets i.e. publicly available datasets and data sets collected using real-life experiments. The results show that our approach can effectively detect multi-stage attacks. The false positive rates are reduced due to implementation of the vulnerability and target host information.

Notre argument repose sur une triple approche : une vision systémique de l'environnement de communication (Chadwick, 2013) ; une conception de la technologie comme structurée et transformée par son utilisation et, en même temps, comme un élément qui influe et modifie les utilisations qu'elle implique (Jouët, 1993) ; et la dynamique de la communication en tant qu'élément essentiel des systèmes démocratiques (Della Porta, 2013). Notre recherche est basée sur des entretiens avec des acteurs clés parmi les activistes, les acteurs politiques et de la communication des manifestations, ainsi que l’analyse d’un corpus de tweets. La structure du travail est centrée sur trois discussions principales. Nous abordons d’abord les relations entre l’utilisation des médias sociaux et les discours sur les médias traditionnels à travers le concept de médiactivisme (Cardon et Granjon, 2010). Après cela, nous explorons différentes voies d’information rendues possibles par l’utilisation des médias sociaux, dans lesquels des nouveaux médiateurs émergent. Enfin, nous discutons les conséquences de la dynamique de visibilité des médias sociaux sur la construction du monde commun (Arendt, 1958). This dissertation discusses the changes brought by social media use to the Brazilian communication system and the communicative dynamics they favored in the case of the 2013 Brazilian protests. Our argument is based on a triple approach that considers: a systemic view of the communication environment, as proposed by Chadwick (2013); a conception of technology as structured and transformed by its use and, at the same time, as an element that impacts and modifies the uses it entails (Jouët, 1993); and the communicational dynamics as an essential part of democratic systems (Della Porta, 2013). Our research is based on interviews with key activist, political and communicational actors of the protests and on the analysis of a corpus of tweets. The structure of the work is centered in three main discussions. We first access the relations between the use of social media and the discourses about mainstream media through the concept of mediactivism (Cardon & Granjon, 2010). After that, we investigate alternative paths of information made possible by the use of social media where new mediators emerge. Finally, we search an understanding of the consequences of the social media visibility dynamics on the construction of the common world, as defined by Hannah Arendt (1958). In the end, following Hardt’s (2017) proposal that the temporality of a movement needs to be analyzed in the relation with the facts that precede and succeed them, we write an exploratory final part of the dissertation linking some of our findings with political and communicational issues that emerged in Brazil after the 2013 movements

The rapidly evolving Internet of Things (IoT) systems demands addressing new requirements. This particularly needs efficient deployment of IoT systems to meet the quality requirements such as latency, energy consumption, privacy, and bandwidth utilization. The increasing availability of computational resources close to the edge has prompted the idea of using these for distributed computing and storage, known as edge computing. Edge computing may help and complement cloud computing to facilitate deployment of IoT systems and improve their quality. However, deciding where to deploy the various application components is not a straightforward task, and IoT system designer should be supported for the decision. To support the designers, in this thesis we focused on the system qualities, and aimed for three main contributions. First, by reviewing the literature, we identified the relevant and most used qualities and metrics. Moreover, to analyse how computer simulation can be used as a supporting tool, we investigated the edge computing simulators, and in particular the metrics they provide for modeling and analyzing IoT systems in edge computing. Finally, we introduced a method to represent how multiple qualities can be considered in the decision. In particular, we considered distributing Deep Neural Network layers as a use case and raked the deployment options by measuring the relevant metrics via simulation.

Service-based communication is becoming increasingly relevant, as seen in the Internet of Things scenarios. Choosing an adequate service however can be a difficult task, as this form of communication may involve sensible resources and data. A trustworthy, safe, and privacy preserving mechanism is desirable for service selection. Reputation systems can help in this selection. This thesis presents a reputation system for service selection based on the security and privacy mechanisms of crypto-coins. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed mechanism in the identification of low quality service providers we also investigated the use of different formulations used to determine a reputation based on peer voting. Results from simulation show the proposed system architecture is viable and supports large adoption via a scalable infrastructure. The performance analysis of different formulations for the calculus of reputations also shows that the recent behavior of an entity is the most impacting factor in establishing its reputation.
A comunicação por meio de serviços tem se tornado cada vez mais relevante, como em cenários da Internet das Coisas. A escolha entre serviços, contudo, pode ser uma tarefa difícil, já que essa forma de comunicação pode envolver recursos e dados sensíveis. Assim, é preciso um sistema de seleção de serviços que seja confiável, seguro e privado, garantindo que as expectativas dos utilizadores dos serviços sejam alcançadas. Sistemas de reputação podem ajudar nessa seleção. Assim, este trabalho apresenta um sistema de reputação distribuído para avaliação de interações baseadas em serviços utilizando conceitos da arquitetura de sistemas das cripto moedas. Para avaliar o desempenho na detecção de serviços de baixa qualidade utilizando o mecanismo proposto, apresenta-se também um estudo do comportamento de diferentes formulações para o cálculo de reputações. Resultados obtidos via simulação mostram que a arquitetura do sistema de reputação proposto é viável e permite uma ampla adoção com uma infraestrutura escalável. A análise do comportamento das formulações também permite concluir que o histórico recente do comportamento dos elementos avaliados é o fator que mais influencia na qualificação dos dispositivos.

Cette recherche interroge la construction médiatique de la revendication « antisystème » sur une période de plus de trente ans (1990-2020). Notre problématique questionne les modalités de construction et de renouvellement de la « posture antisystème », en lien avec les transformations de l’écosystème médiatique au sein duquel évoluent les figures porteuses de cette revendication. Pour ce faire, nous proposons, dans un premier temps, d’identifier et de classer les figures de l’« antisystème » pour examiner, dans un second temps, leurs trajectoires médiatiques et discursives. Trois principaux axes analytiques guident cette démarche. En premier lieu nous montrons comment une rhétorique du ressentiment permet aux acteurs de l’« antisystème » de construire une double image de « combattant » et de « victime » du « système ». Nous proposons ensuite d’étudier le potentiel médiagénique des figures étudiées, c’est-à-dire la manière dont elles s’adaptent aux supports et aux formats par lesquels elles sont médiatisées. Nous examinons ainsi les procédés sémio-discursifs qui permettent aux « antisystème » d’interagir avec les grands médias d’information qu’ils critiquent par ailleurs, tout en déployant une « panoplie » communicationnelle sur l’internet. Enfin, nous proposons d’étudier la manière dont les personnalités de l’« antisystème » construisent des espaces numériques « contre-informationnels » pour imposer une vision du monde en lien avec leur idéologie politique
This research questions the media construction of the "anti-system" claim over a period of more than thirty years (1990-2020). Our thesis problematic questions the modalities of construction and renewal of the "anti-system posture", in connection with the transformations of the media environment within which these figures evolve. We first work on identifying and classifying the « anti-system » figures; we then examine their media and discursive trajectories. Three main analytical points guide this analysis. We first demonstrate the building of a rhetoric of resentment, which allows the anti-system actors to present themselves as both “fighters” and “victims” of “the system”. We then study the mediagenic potential of these figures: we therefore analyse their ways of adapting to the media and formats in which they are mediated. We thus examine the semio-discursive processes through which the "anti-system" interact with the major information media they are criticising, while deploying at the same time a communicational "panoply" on the Internet. We finally study their construction of “counter informational” spaces online, to spread their vision of a world in line with their political ideology

Antennas are one of the most sensitive elements in any wireless communication equipment. Designing small-profile, multiband and wideband internal antennas with a simple structure has become a necessary challenge. In this thesis, two planar antennas are designed, simulated and implemented on an effort to cover the LTE-M1 and NB-IoT radio frequencies. The cellular antenna is designed to receive and transmit data over the eight-band LTE700/GSM/UMTS, and the GNSS antenna is designed to receive signal from the global positioning system and global navigation systems, GPS (USA) and GLONASS. The antennas are suitable for direct print on the system circuit board of a device. Related theory and research work are discussed and referenced, providing a strong configuration for future use. Recommendations and suggestions on future work are also discussed. The proposed antenna system is more than promising and with further adjustments and refinement can lead to a fully working solution.

During the evolution of the music industry, developments in the media environment have required music firms to adapt in order to survive. Changes in broadcast radio programming during the 1950s; the Compact Cassette during the 1970s; and the deregulation of media ownership during the 1990s are all examples of changes which have heavily affected the music industry. This study explores similar contemporary dynamics, examines how decision makers in the music industry perceive and make sense of the developments, and reveals how they revise their business strategies, based on their mental models of the media environment.

A qualitative system dynamics model is developed in order to support the reasoning brought forward by the study. The model is empirically grounded, but is also based on previous music industry research and a theoretical platform constituted by concepts from evolutionary economics and sociology of culture. The empirical data primarily consist of 36 personal interviews with decision makers in the American, British and Swedish music industrial ecosystems. The study argues that the model which is proposed, more effectively explains contemporary music industry dynamics than music industry models presented by previous research initiatives.

Supported by the model, the study is able to show how “new” media outlets make old music business models obsolete and challenge the industry’s traditional power structures. It is no longer possible to expose music at one outlet (usually broadcast radio) in the hope that it will lead to sales of the same music at another (e.g. a compact disc).

The study shows that many music industry decision makers still have not embraced the new logic, and have not yet challenged their traditional mental models of the media environment. Rather, they remain focused on preserving the pivotal role held by the CD and other physical distribution technologies.

Further, the study shows that while many music firms remain attached to the old models, other firms, primarily music publishers, have accepted the transformation, and have reluctantly recognised the realities of a virtualised environment.

Ultra wideband (UWB) communications has been a subject of much discussion over the last decade. The method of UWB has had a hard time to establish itself among other methods such as Bluetooth and WiFi but as internet of things (IoT) gains a foothold in our daily lives, UWB has presented some new application areas. These application areas are, among other things, self driving cars, energy efficient data transfer, health care applications, sensor networks and real time location systems. This project aims to use UWB communications to real-world applications, specifically, electrocardiography (ECG) - an application in health care in this project, and develop a prototype for the application. The prototype consists of two Android smart phones and two UWB modules (EVK1000 evaluation kits from DecaWave, Inc). Each smartphone connects a UWB module so that the two smart phones, one as sender and the other as receiver, can communicate directly through UWB radios. This is intended to serve as a proof-of-concept that UWB devices are well suited for short range data transfer applications. The result achieved by the project is an android application along with sending and receiving programs for the development boards by Decawave and additional information regarding UWB and its uses. The results also include a comparison of UWB, Bluetooth and WiFi as of todays standard. The goal of the project is to learn how android applications are programmed, how UWB is used in todays technology and how to program and use development boards presented by companies. The prototype has been built and shown that 12-lead simulated ECGsignals from the sender can be transfered to the receiver through the UWB communications. The work includes programming (in C) the two UWB modules for UWB communications, and Java for the android applications (programs) on the smart phones. The Android application is handling transmission of ECG signals to the sending UWB module and then receiving them from the receiving UWB module as well as displaying them on the receiver. The future work to continue the present project is to replace the sending smart phone by an ECG device that sends real ECG signals.
