While IoT safety and security incidents continue to increase in frequency, scope and severity, there remains a gap in how the issue will be addressed. While the debate continues within academia, industry standards bodies, government and industry media, new entrants continue to rapidly enter the market with cheaper more powerful products with little incentive to address information security issues. In a free market economy, the supply and the demand would determine the product and services and the associated prices without intervention. Manufacturers are free to innovate, consumers drive choice and competition brings these opposing forces to an equilibrium of market price. But how does this economic system factor in the risk of an event that neither party may ever consider and, yet, it may impact not only impact those involved, but has the potential to have catastrophic harm to others? The downside, the system does not consider “external factors”, i.e. a compromise to accommodate what consumers need. Economists often urge governments to adopt policies that "internalize" an externality, so that costs and benefits will affect mainly parties who choose to incur them. Such an intervention, however, often comes with many challenges and consequences. Even with the added urgency of growing risk to human safety, regulatory intervention takes time. Likewise, a self-regulating market would undoubtedly also take a significant amount of time to take the necessary actions to address such an externality, even if incentivized. While it continues to be all too easy to defer the blame and risk on consumer, like the industrial revolution, this industry must overcome its own safety challenges like the auto, transportation or energy industries before it. While, consumers must inevitably take some reasonable measures to protect their interests, clearly the accountability must reside elsewhere. There is a potentially increasingly significant influential subset of consumers in the IoT ecosystem, the Enterprise Buyer, specifically marketing and technology executives, who champion consumer needs within their organization’s broader products and services that incorporate IoT. In this thesis, we aim to investigate the following issue: What are the attitudes and potential role for Enterprise Buyers in influencing negative externalities, i.e. IoT security in the IoT market, specifically from the perspective of marketing and technology executives? We believe that this group is uniquely positioned to understand a consumer first mindset and how to articulate value in otherwise negatively perceived field of information security by examining context, business/technical challenges and opportunities and reveal awareness, attitude and accountability. The results of our survey show the majority of marketing and technology executives who responded believe information security awareness is increasingly an executive accountability and priority and Enterprise Buyers hold a highly influential position in their ability to influence the IoT market and its security development and maturation.

Ett sådant ingrepp kommer emellertid ofta med många utmaningar och konsekvenser. Trots att förhöjda hot mot människors säkerhet ökar angelägenheten tar uppdatering av regelverken tid. På samma sätt skulle en självreglerande marknad utan tvivel också ta väldigt mycket tid på sig för att vidta nödvändiga åtgärder för att hantera en sådan extern faktor, även om det fanns incitament för att göra det. Medan det fortsätter att vara alltför lätt att överlåta ansvaret och risken till konsumenten, såsom under den industriella revolutionen, måste denna industri övervinna sina egna säkerhetsutmaningar såsom bil-, transport- eller energibranschen gjort före den. Internal communication has an important role in an organization’s every action. It is affecting to the efficiency of processes as well as sense of community among the members of an organization. Even though internal communication as such is relatively much searched topic, developing internal communication and internal communication policy have been disregarded among scientific community. The objective of this research is to find out how to develop an internal communication policy when there are factors that are strongly affecting to that. The main theory is contingency theory which argues that there is no one universal way to organize an internal communication policy. There are some external and internal factors that affect to organizing such. In this research the growth is an external factor which has affected to the internal factor, the amount of tacit knowledge. The research is made for an IT company Aava Mobile Oy which needs development for three different internal communication channels: intranet, familiarization package and Common Coffee Break. The goal is to find the objectives of development for each channel. The research is a case study which is using qualitative methods such as semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and observation. The researcher was an active part of the working community which meant the observation was inclusive. The research philosophy is critical realism which means there is an objective reality but the knowledge is socially constructed. This research found out that growth has many impacts on the development of internal communication policy. The growth makes the organizational structure more complex than it was before which affects the flow of information and the amount of tacit knowledge. Internal communication can be measured in multiple ways, in this research the employee satisfaction was connected with the success of the internal communication policies. Employee satisfaction and the amount of tacit knowledge was also connected, less tacit knowledge within an organization equals more satisfaction among employees.

In 2004, the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) issued a paper that defined internal auditors’ role in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) as a role that relates to measuring and monitoring performance. The present study examines how high internal audit involvement in ERM-related activities and a strong relationship between internal auditors and senior management influence internal auditors’ objectivity and independence. The present study replicates the experimental design used by de Zwaan, Stewart and Subramaniam (2011) with the manipulation of the variables of (i) internal audit’s involvement in ERM and (ii) the strength of the relationship between internal audit and senior management. Similarly to de Zwaan et al. (2011), objectivity and independence are measured by examining internal audit’s willingness to report a breakdown in risk procedures to the audit committee. The results show that internal auditors are somewhat influenced by a high involvement in ERM-related activities when reporting a breakdown in risk procedures and that internal auditors consider the guidelines issued by the IIA important to follow. Further, the results do not indicate that a strong relationship between internal auditors and senior management influences internal audit’s willingness to report a breakdown in risk procedures.

After most large industrial companies have installed enterprise systems (ES), the managerial concern moves to the effective diffusion and infusion of ES throughout a company. Diffusion means the degree in which a system has been shared throughout the company and infusion is the degree in which a system has penetrated a company in terms of importance, impact, and significance. Little of the ES literature has considered these new larger issues. This thesis develops a model of internal diffusion and infusion of ES. The ES diffusion model presents the ES implementation as an iterative, cumulative, and virtuous process over time. The model recounts and validates the authentic characteristics of ES projects, places "use" as both product and fomenter of the implementation activity, and putting emphasis upon the importance of experiential learning. The ES infusion model develops a framework of ES capabilities to analyse the extent and quality of the use of ES in organizational contexts (i.e. infusion). To investigate these issues this research has borrowed the perspective of organizational introduction of a technological innovation from the innovation discipline. The scope of the investigation is limited to three selected organizations overseas, which had each already installed at least a single functional component of the system and had decided (or was working on) the diffusion of the system in further departments or locations. The data collection was a combination of retrospective and real-time analysis. Hence, a multiple-case studies for constructing theory from the observed field data was developed.

Governments around the world have pursued ICT based initiatives including the provision of infrastructure to assist regional areas to develop economically (Beckinsale et al. 2006). There has been considerable interest in exploiting ICT to develop high technology clusters and support innovative networks (Lawson & Lorenz 1999). However, these initiatives have met with mixed success. It is clear that such development depends on more than providing appropriate technology Attention to social and organisational factors is crucial if regional areas are to realise the potential of ICT as a tool for regional development (Gengatharen & Standing 2005). It is important to understand the nature of business networking as well as the perspective of those participating in such networks if successful initiatives are to be established. The aim of this research is to identify how ICT can be used for knowledge sharing among businesses in regional areas and how the online networks through which knowledge is shared can contribute to the development of the region. This research investigates the question of what value small businesses in those regions derive from knowledge sharing networks using ICT. It also seeks to identify the value creation potential of those networks for their region. Previous research has shown that large organisations have achieved significant value from virtual communities of practice (VCoPs) as a structure for sharing knowledge and supporting innovation (Wenger 2004). The concept of Communities of Practice and Virtual Communities of Practice provided a useful point of departure for this research. The investigation comprised interpretive case studies of two Australian regional areas and their local business networks which incorporated SMEs in a variety of industries. Each case study was conducted in three stages. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted with regional economic development leaders. Second, 192 small and medium business owners were surveyed about their business activities and their participation in local business networks. Third, in-depth interviews were conducted with 23 small business owners to gain a richer understanding of their participation in knowledge-sharing networks and the value they realised or anticipated from various knowledge-sharing activities. A combined analysis of the two cases was conducted as well as the individual analyses. The research adopted a modified Structured Case method (Carroll & Swatman 2000). The analysis of the two case studies revealed: a.) There was a significant difference between the majority of SMEs who traded within the region and those trading largely beyond the region. The latter’s more proactive online sharing knowledge and seeking of business opportunities would enable them to access most value from VCoEs. b.) The participating SMEs operated in a number of industries and what they had in common was an interest in improving their enterprises. Consequently they used their regional networks which were not aligned to any one industry to make connections and share knowledge. They did not necessarily seek to access specific information. c.) A necessary prerequisite of VCoEs is having vibrant CoEs where face-to-face interaction enhances the development of trust and social capital. This appeared as an important factor facilitating the move to incorporate online knowledge sharing. d.) Younger businesses appeared to gain the most value from knowledge sharing in CoEs as they were using their networks to determine how to grow their firm. e.) The value of VCoEs to the SME participants is primarily in their general connection to other businesses in the region. Since the participants operate in a number of industries, what they have in common is an interest in their enterprises. The main value appears to come from the potential of the VCoEs to add to this connection and to social capital. This study found that successful management of VCoEs must: i) Ensure the network website is actively used by members before attempting to incorporate online knowledge sharing. ii) Monitor and stimulate online forum interaction rather than rely on interaction to occur naturally. iii) Not rely on email as a mechanism for stimulating knowledge sharing. Email is seen as more appropriate for formal documentation than for candid exchange of views. The concept of virtual communities of practice was found to be somewhat inappropriate for the diverse SMEs in the regional networks. Because of their diversity, they do not necessarily see value in sharing knowledge about practice but they do see value in sharing more general information and in providing support, connection and ideas that facilitate the strategic direction of their business. To address this issue, the concept of virtual communities of enterprise (VCoEs) is proposed as recognition of what the participating SMEs had in common: an interest in their individual businesses as part of the region. The original contribution of this research consists of its identification of the issues in linking SMEs across industries. It provides new insights on the business practices of regional SMEs and developed the concepts of Community of Enterprise (CoE) and Virtual Community of Enterprise (VCoE) to capture the special nature of knowledge sharing in regional multi-industry business networks. New perspectives are revealed on the ways that value could be derived from knowledge sharing by these regionally networked SMEs, as such it adds to the body of knowledge in an area where there has been little systematic investigation. This research reinforces the importance of social capital as an essential pre-requisite for accessing the value of intellectual capital in regions. Social capital emerges as vital when establishing and maintaining face-to-face knowledge sharing in regional networks and a necessary pre-condition for successfully establishing online knowledge sharing. Trust is a key factor and this research extends understanding of the role of social capital and the importance of trust in regional networks and online interaction. Its findings have significant implications for the development and management of CoEs and VCoEs as it outlines the key elements that need to be addressed when establishing and maintaining them, the appropriate applications for this context and the issues involved in management of the networking and online contexts. These findings not only increase our understanding of the management dynamics of online networks, they can also provide guidance to those seeking to establish successful VCoEs.

This is an exploratory research study which examines the role of social enterprise in delivering services to children who migrate within China. Under the current Hukou policy framework, migrant children face a variety of challenges due to differences in the level and accessibility of welfare support available for migrant people and migrant children. Social enterprise, as one form of non-institutional welfare service provision, has become an increasingly important vehicle for addressing a variety of social problems. However, very little empirical research has been conducted regarding the contributions and constraints of these social enterprises, especially social enterprises working with internal migrant children in China. In this study, an ethnographic approach was employed to examine the nature of social enterprises working with migrant children. Two community-based social enterprises which aimed to promote social inclusion and improve unmet child well-being by providing community centre services were intensively studied. The researcher was immersed in each social enterprise for six weeks. Data from these observations were triangulated with data from interviews, focus group meetings and document analysis. The key finding of this thesis is twofold. First, it developed a multi-layered social enterprise ecosystem to explain the operation of social enterprises by looking at the macro-, meso- and micro-level environments and at the stakeholders who operate within the different layers. This framework highlights the constraints of the institutional context in China and the powerlessness of the researched community-based social enterprises to respond to the uncertain policy environment. The researched social enterprises had limited ability to respond to the substantial challenges of migrant children, but even so they each made a great contribution to migrant children’s subjective well-being. Second, the findings highlight the crucial role of the co-production process during the identification of needs and the development of an appropriate service. By looking at their daily practice, it was also possible to discuss the ‘need-driven’ mission drift, which had not been considered in previous studies. The conclusion of this study is that the social enterprise approach is an emerging mechanism for supporting migrant children but that social enterprises have great space for improving their operations.

Corporate governance has received increased attention from both regulators and researchers in recent years resulting in highlighting the significance of the internal audit function (IAF). Another transformative force on the IAF has been the dissemination of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems which have an impact on the legitimacy of the IAF if it is not suitably adapted. However, there is insufficient knowledge about the adaptations of the IAF which are required if it is to maintain its essential role in governance. This thesis extends our knowledge by exploring and theorising the adaptation of the IAF after ERP introduction. This thesis uses institutional theory as a lens through which to investigate how the IAF responds to the external governance pressures and the internal pressures of the control logic following the introduction of an ERP system. Data were gathered from two listed companies in the food and beverage sector and two large banks operating in Egypt, where one of each pair is an international company and the other is a national company. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with all stakeholders in addition to careful analysis of a number of internal and external documents related to the ERP and the IAF. The study finds that governance pressures related to the IAF determine the legitimisation criteria for the IAF. There is little coercive governance pressure on the IAF in Egypt. However, international companies with operations in Egypt have introduced normative governance pressures as a result of their compliance with stock exchange rules in other jurisdictions. Therefore, mimetic behaviour has helped in transferring the IAF response to ERP implementation. ERP systems carry new control logics based on some interlinked assumptions, which have affected the IAF. The ERP system’s control logic is aligned with the corporate governance goals and objectives, but further alignment is needed to make the best use of the ERP system in enhancing internal control. The introduction of an ERP system produces uncertainty about the IAF’s activities, which motivates it to adapt by changing its practice and structure. The changes in the IAF are dependent on the strategic response adopted by the auditors, which range from acquiescence to defiance. These responses were found to change over time. The differences in responses result in different outcomes for the IAF adaptation. In the international companies the implementation of an ERP system motivates the IAF to be integrated and have a comprehensive scope, whereas in the national companies change was resisted and the role of the IAF was significantly diminished. The IAF’s legitimacy maintaining strategies depend on the coercive and normative governance pressures, which give directions about how to maintain legitimacy. This study offers an explanation of how information systems contribute to the IAF’s professional stability or change and of how macro-governance pressures can bind micro-IAF practice within organisations.

Enterprise education is a mandatory part of the national curriculum, and all secondary schools in England must provide some kind of enterprise education for pupils. This ranges from work experience and enterprise programmes delivered by voluntary organisations, to economic literacy classes. The aims and objectives of these programmes are many and varied, making the task of evaluating them fraught with difficulties. Indeed, many evaluation studies of enterprise initiatives in general, have been criticised for a lack of scientific rigour. If there is inadequate empirical evidence about the efficacy of these programmes, then how do schools decide which ones to choose? How do programme providers develop their content and reach intended target populations? Worse, how do policy makers make decisions based on the varied and often contradictory aims and objectives of enterprise initiatives, about the design and development their policies? The aim of this research is to try and help to answer some of these questions by developing a methodology for evaluation studies that could be widely used on enterprise education programmes. By using the same methodology, comparisons can be made between different programmes, and take into account the differential impacts on different populations. Specifically, the main objective was to develop a robust programme evaluation tool, which could be widely used to evaluate enterprise education programmes targeted at young people in schools. This research involved the design and piloting of an attitude scale to measure enterprise potential in young people still at school. The development of the scale involved following accepted procedures for scale development, including reliability and validity testing. Two pilot studies are reported in this thesis, along with a longitudinal evaluation of a year-long Young Enterprise Company Programme. By using the attitude scale it was possible to design a methodology using pre-and posttesting, with control groups. Scores on the attitude scale were then compared using a series of statistical tests. This approach was thus able to overcome many of the criticisms frequently made of evaluations of enterprise initiatives. The scale enables researchers to take into account other moderating factors, which may influence attitudes towards enterprise. For policy makers the scale can provide evidence of the efficacy of different types of enterprise education programmes for different target groups, thus helping to identify how best to target resources and investment. The attitude scale can also highlight the potential impact of contextual and demographic factors such as type of school, ethnic background, and a family background of business ownership.

Background Diabetes mellitus is a common chronic disease and a leading cause of morbidity, complications and mortality worldwide. The number of people living with diabetes is projected to rise sharply over the forthcoming decades. Diabetes care is complex and can overburden clinicians and nurses. There is a need for innovative, flexible and cost-effective technologies to enable successful diabetes management. This thesis explores the opportunities and challenges of the mobile application (app) technology as a potential tool to support diabetes care and management. Purpose The purpose was to develop and evaluate a mobile app that supports healthcare professionals (HCPs) in clinical decision-making. Methods A mixed-methods approach was used following the user-centred design (UCD) framework for the design and implementation of all studies. Quantitative and qualitative systematic reviews of studies reporting the use of mobile apps to support diabetes management were undertaken to identify, appraise and summarise available research evidence. An interview study was carried out with diabetes specialist nurses (DSNs), to explore their experiences and views, and to identify user requirements for apps. Lastly, a guidelines-based mobile clinical decision-support app was developed and tested with junior doctors and DSNs in a controlled environment to evaluate its usability and impact on adherence to clinical guidelines, and to explore how participants experienced the app and their suggestions for improvements. Results Both reviews found that the existing evidence base for mobile apps is weak and inadequate to draw conclusions about the impact of their use as interventions in diabetes management. The interview study identified that nurses lack experience in using apps in clinical practice, even though they believed it could facilitate and support their work. ‘Diabetes & CKD’, a simple mobile decision-support app, has been designed and built for the study to assist HCPs in management of patients with diabetes and kidney disease and was tested by 39 junior doctors and 3 DSNs. It had no impact on the accuracy of decisions. Feedback from participants after the pilot session and usability testing indicated a wish to integrate such apps into their clinical practice with a strong willingness to use them in the future. Conclusions Application of UCD methods was efficient as the app was well-accepted by both DSNs and junior doctors. Despite the positive views and the strong willingness to use such apps, they are not widely used. There is a need to regulate the use of medical apps in clinical practice. Further research with rigorous methodology is required upon which policymakers and practitioners can base their decision-making.

Despite a growing interest in processes of diffusion within organisations and some understanding of the social processes of creating and enacting external and internal IT innovations, little empirical research has studied potentially relevant intra-organisational diffusion dynamics underlying the movement of innovations adopted at an organisational level, into the front-line practices of organisational subunits. Furthermore, we know even less about the diffusion processes of non-transactional digital innovations, such as enterprise social networking (ESN). ESNs embedded “ideology of openness” and its nontransactional nature particularly create social tensions that largely run against the grain of organisational rationality and efficiency, pervade key organisational processes and lead to wide variations in how organisational actors interpret and appropriate ESN features within organisations. The goal of this research is to theorize about the institutional mechanisms and processes by which these highly flexible digital innovations become misaligned, aligned and diffused at the micro-level of everyday work, as well as the enabling and precipitating dynamics that condition and trigger these mechanisms. This theorization involved a longitudinal exploration of how different communities of actors in a globally distributed technology services firm appropriated an ESN platform over a four year period, and how managerial intervention shaped appropriation outcomes. These dynamics can be understood through a rhetorical legitimation lens as a process where organisational actors with competing interests use strategic communications, to legitimate and enable the generation of collective meanings around distinctly different IT features and practices. Findings indicate that the core internal diffusion process was intra-organisational theorizing around ESN. Intra-organisational theorizing was an on-going process of elaborating and refining the organisational level theorization for ESN to suit front- line employees in their immediate contexts. In this way, it gradually helped to standardize and scale the ESNs features and functions as it was appropriated by different communities of actors (infusion). In each infusion, intra-organisational theorizing unfolded in three cumulative and relatively sequential phases of legitimation: (1) rationale framing (2) value advertising, and (3) motivating engagement, which were instrumental for respectively managing political, technical and cultural institutional misalignments, and promoting intra-group meaning making. On the other hand, negotiation and inter-group meaning-making was enabled by strategically grafting on other intra-organisational theorizations, and co-opting people, ESN functions, and practices from other infusions. Further, these legitimation processes unfolded as a sequence of primarily pragmatic pathos and logos appeals. In particular, early and on-going logos appeals helped to de-legitimate established, competing technologies, and directly enabled legitimation and collective meaning-making around ESN.

Internal communication is a subject increasing in importance. This subject has, as many other things, been influenced by the Internet-based and connected world that we live in today. As a result, Enterprise Social Networks has appeared as a tool for organisations to use. While the usage of this tool is growing, the existing research on the subject is yet very limited. So is the research on employees‘ needs when it comes to internal communication. In this study, we aim to fill these gaps, by exploring the use of these enterprise social networks from an organisational actor‘s perspective. In order to fulfil this purpose, a qualitative case study within multiple embedded units of analysis was used. The empirical material was gathered through in-depth semi- structured interviews as well as observations. Furthermore, we took on real-life experience by using the ESN tool ourselves. Several themes were then identified using a thematic analysis. By using this method, we conclude that organisational actors use ESNs for private, public and remote communication. We also provide the reader with five characteristics of ESNs that are perceived as important by organisational actors, namely; easy to learn, easy to use, accessible, informal and avoids disturbance. Several perceived outcomes resulting from ESN usage is then identified. We conclude the study by explaining that if organisations identify a need for an ESN, use it in the right way, and have the appropriate culture, the implementation of an ESN can be very beneficial. This, as organisational actors experience it as a good tool for internal communication.

Визначено економічний зміст інноваційної діяльності, а також сутність управління нею. Ідентифіковано принципи функціонування системи управління інноваційною діяльністю корпоративних підприємств. Систематизовано фактори впливу на результати управління інноваційною діяльністю та обґрунтовано доцільність застосування результативного підходу до його оцінювання. Виявлено тенденції інноваційної діяльності, діагностовано фінансово-економічну спроможність до її реалізації, оцінено результативність управління для корпоративних підприємств машинобудування. Запропоновано наукові положення стратегічного управління інноваційною діяльністю корпоративних підприємств машинобудування, які базуються на діагностуванні сили та напряму впливу факторів середовища і дозволяють обирати раціональні стратегії інноваційної діяльності, інструментарій їх реалізації, здійснювати стратегічний контроль та аудит. Надано науково-практичні рекомендації щодо удосконалення управління інноваційною діяльністю корпоративних підприємств бази апробації відповідно до типу інноваційної поведінки у частині вибору та реалізації стратегічних цілей.
The thesis is devoted to widening the theoretical provisions, scientific and methodological support and substantiation of practical recommendations to improve the management of innovative activity of corporate engineering enterprises. Economic content of innovative activity, as well as the essence of its management was determined. Principles of operation of the management system of innovative activity of corporate enterprises, which it was suggested to classify into system-wide, providing and resulting, were identified. Factors of influence on the results of innovative management were systematized and possibility of applying effective approach to its assessment was proved. Factors of influence are divided into the demand for innovation, public management of innovative activity and the internal potential of the enterprise. Tendencies of innovative activity were analyzed and revealed, financial and economic capacity for its implementation was diagnosed, an effectiveness of its management for corporate engineering enterprises was assessed. Based on the analysis of management system of innovative activity of corporate engineering enterprises it was revealed inadequate methodological support of assessing the effectiveness of strategic change in innovative activity of corporate engineering enterprises. This made it possible to offer scientific principles of strategic management of innovative activity of corporate engineering enterprises, based on the diagnosis of the power and direction of influence of demand for innovation, public management of innovative activity and the internal potential of the enterprise. They allow choosing the 23 rational strategy of innovative activity according to the type of innovative behavior (leaders, followers or outsiders), tools for their implementation in terms of goal-setting and exercising strategic control and audit. The criteria of the place and the role of innovative strategy in the system of corporate enterprise strategies were defined. Among them it should be noted: the need to accounting during development and implementation of all types of the strategies, accounting of the common vision for the organization, resource availability based on the strategic analysis at all levels and components of the strategies, availability of the rules of their distribution according to the ratio of standard and innovative activities, commensurate and reciprocal influence of goals of the strategies, impact on the degree of accessibility of the strategic development results, role in ensuring the potential of growth for the enterprise and its competitiveness, taking into account the basic conditions of environment and its subjects, ensuring internal and external synergies. It was determined that choice and change of innovative activity strategies in a volatile external environment and taking into account significant fluctuations in internal capacity of the enterprises should be gradual, stage nature, which contemplates the realization of the strategic goals, their audit with the subsequent decision on the further implementation according to the selected management tools. It was revealed that the corporate engineering enterprises have sufficient internal capacity to maintain the leading position both in domestic and foreign markets. Among those who implement the type of behavior of followers, many on the basis of the forecast will be able to improve the performance of innovative activity. On the basis of the findings there were given theoretical and practical recommendations on improvement of management of innovation activity for corporate engineering enterprises in selection and implementation of the relevant strategic goals and diagnosed their internal capacity to implement the recommended goals. These include, primarily, organizational and management, resource, technical and technological goals. In addition, general directions of efficiency increase of management of innovative activity were proposed for corporate engineering enterprises, including the need to implement the principle of differentiation of the public innovation policy and strategy.

Систематизированы факторы, влияющие на результаты управления инновационной деятельностью и обоснована целесообразность применения результативного подхода к его оценке. Выявлены тенденции инновационной деятельности, диагностировано финансово-экономическую способность к реализации, оценены результативность управления для корпоративных предприятий машиностроения. Предложены научные положения стратегического управления инновационной деятельностью корпоративных предприятий машиностроения, которые базируются на диагностике силы и направления влияния факторов среды и позволяют выбирать рациональные стратегии инновационной деятельности, инструментарий их реализации, осуществлять стратегический контроль и аудит. In times of digital transformation and considering the potential of the data-driven economy, it is crucial that data is not only made available, data sources can be trusted, but also data integrity can be guaranteed, necessary privacy and security mechanisms are in place, and data and access comply with policies and legislation. In many cases, complex and interdisciplinary questions cannot be answered by a single dataset and thus it is necessary to combine data from multiple disparate sources. However, because most data today is locked up in isolated silos, data cannot be used to its fullest potential. The core challenge for most organisations and enterprises in regards to data exchange and integration is to be able to combine data from internal and external data sources in a manner that supports both day to day operations and innovation. Linked Data is a promising data publishing and integration paradigm that builds upon standard web technologies. It supports the publishing of structured data in a semantically explicit and interlinked manner such that it can be easily connected, and consequently becomes more interoperable and useful. The PROPEL project - Propelling the Potential of Enterprise Linked Data in Austria - surveyed technological challenges, entrepreneurial opportunities, and open research questions on the use of Linked Data in a business context and developed a roadmap and a set of recommendations for policy makers, industry, and the research community. Shifting away from a predominantly academic perspective and an exclusive focus on open data, the project looked at Linked Data as an emerging disruptive technology that enables efficient enterprise data management in the rising data economy. Current market forces provide many opportunities, but also present several data and information management challenges. Given that Linked Data enables advanced analytics and decision-making, it is particularly suitable for addressing today's data and information management challenges. In our research, we identified a variety of highly promising use cases for Linked Data in an enterprise context. Examples of promising application domains include "customization and customer relationship management", "automatic and dynamic content production, adaption and display", "data search, information retrieval and knowledge discovery", as well as "data and information exchange and integration". The analysis also revealed broad potential across a large spectrum of industries whose structural and technological characteristics align well with Linked Data characteristics and principles: energy, retail, finance and insurance, government, health, transport and logistics, telecommunications, media, tourism, engineering, and research and development rank among the most promising industries for the adoption of Linked Data principles. In addition to approaching the subject from an industry perspective, we also examined the topics and trends emerging from the research community in the field of Linked Data and the Semantic Web. Although our analysis revolved around a vibrant and active community composed of academia and leading companies involved in semantic technologies, we found that industry needs and research discussions are somewhat misaligned. Whereas some foundation technologies such as knowledge representation and data creation/publishing/sharing, data management and system engineering are highly represented in scientific papers, specific topics such as recommendations, or cross-topics such as machine learning or privacy and security are marginally present. Topics such as big/large data and the internet of things are (still) on an upward trajectory in terms of attention. In contrast, topics that are very relevant for industry such as application oriented topics or those that relate to security, privacy and robustness are not attracting much attention. When it comes to standardisation efforts, we identified a clear need for a more in-depth analysis into the effectiveness of existing standards, the degree of coverage they provide with respect the foundations they belong to, and the suitability of alternative standards that do not fall under the core Semantic Web umbrella. Taking into consideration market forces, sector analysis of Linked Data potential, demand side analysis and the current technological status it is clear that Linked Data has a lot of potential for enterprises and can act as a key driver of technological, organizational, and economic change. However, in order to ensure a solid foundation for Enterprise Linked Data include there is a need for: greater awareness surrounding the potential of Linked Data in enterprises, lowering of entrance barriers via education and training, better alignment between industry demands and research activities, greater support for technology transfer from universities to companies. The PROPEL roadmap recommends concrete measures in order to propel the adoption of Linked Data in Austrian enterprises. These measures are structured around five fields of activities: "awareness and education", "technological innovation, research gaps, standardisation", "policy and legal", and "funding". Key short-term recommendations include the clustering of existing activities in order to raise visibility on an international level, the funding of key topics that are under represented by the community, and the setup of joint projects. In the medium term, we recommend the strengthening of existing academic and private education efforts via certification and to establish flagship projects that are based on national use cases that can serve as blueprints for transnational initiatives. This requires not only financial support, but also infrastructure support, such as data and services to build solutions on top. In the long term, we recommend cooperation with international funding schemes to establish and foster a European level agenda, and the setup of centres of excellence.

Biological effects are known to occur with ultrasound energy at kilohertz frequencies. This has led to research into its use as a non-invasive tool for tissue healing and repair. The aim of this research is to investigate the in vitro application of kilohertz ultrasound and to measure the biological responses using models of dental pulp cells which play an important role in dental repair. Ultrasound emitted from a longwave therapy instrument (DuoSon, SRA Developments Ltd) was characterised and measured identifying the range and intensity of the field. These measurements, coupled with biological data, identified the difficulties when conducting research with kilohertz ultrasound in vitro and indicated that the use of multi-well culture plates is not appropriate when investigating the effects of kilohertz ultrasound in cell culture. An improved method for in vitro kilohertz ultrasound application was devised enabling the investigation of non-thermal ultrasound effects on primary human dental cells. Cell proliferation, viability and gene expression, including the dental-related and biomechanically-responsive gene, dentine matrix protein-1, responded in a dose-dependent manner with respect to the duration of ultrasound application. These findings highlight the complexity of the biophysical interaction of kilohertz ultrasound with cells and demonstrate the need for further clarification of specific ultrasound settings for optimal therapeutic application. This study has demonstrated a positive effect of kilohertz ultrasound on human dental pulp cells and has identified methods to improve in vitro cell culture models to capture robust data to develop a novel therapy for dental repair.

Public sector reform in South Africa became a reality with the change in political dispensations in 1994. In South Africa the transformation of the public sector became critical in order to provide for a better life for all. This required regulatory frameworks that could establish good governance and a holistic transformation of the public sector. Similar, to other countries financial management reform became critical to establish high performance public sector institutions, but specific to South Africa, to support equity in society. In this study the assumption is made that Internal Audit has a critical role toward the supply chain management framework, especially in relation to the two broad underlying motivations for procurement reform in South Africa. These are good governance and preferential procurement toward socio-economic empowerment. Both Internal Audit and supply chain management are private sector management methodology that forms part of the financial management reform of the public sector.

For companies legal privilege represents an essential bulwark against the state. In the case of internal investigations legal privilege is of prime importance to the companies. At crucial points of intersection the legal situation in the US differs from that of Germany. In the US, confidentiality is regarded with the aura of a Holy Grail, applying to in-house counsel and external lawyers alike. However, in Germany those privileges do not apply to in-house counsels and neither are they intended to apply to the corporate lawyer (so-called Syndikus). This is explained by Criminal Law policy arguments, which according to the author\'s opinion are not tenable. This essay represents solutions de lege lata and de lege ferenda, in order to at least include in-house lawyers (so-called Syndikus) within the scope of legal privilege. For this purpose, the author argues in favor of a partial adoption of the American way.

Sepsis remains a common reason for hospital admission and is associated with a high mortality especially in the elderly. Neutrophils are one of the primary immune cells involved in the elimination of pathogens; however also contribute to the pathogenesis of multi-organ failure in sepsis. Previous studies have demonstrated an age-related decline in neutrophil migration and phagocytosis suggesting this as a mechanism for the poorer outcomes observed from sepsis in the elderly. Observational studies suggest that HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) are associated with improved outcomes from sepsis and potentially modulate neutrophil function. This thesis demonstrates that high dose (80mg) simvastatin improved the migration of neutrophils in the healthy elderly without affecting other key neutrophil functions, such as phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species production (ROS). Studies in patients with sepsis, demonstrated that circulating neutrophils displayed features of immune-paresis and failed to migrate, but were activated with increased phagocytosis and ROS. This was accompanied by reduced neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation and delayed late apoptosis. The use of in-vitro simvastatin failed to modulate migration, whilst ROS and NET production was reduced by simvastatin. Simvastatin remains a potential immune-modulating drug for treating early infection in the elderly.

Murine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated by plastic adherence contain contaminating cells and have poor growth and differentiation. I report a detailed protocol outlining the steps to prospectively isolate a pure and potent MSC population from murine bone marrow based on their expression of stem cell antigen-1 (Sca-1) and platelet derived growth factor- alpha (PDGFRα) (PαS cells) using flow cytometry. PαS MSCs have augmented growth potential and robust tri-lineage differentiation compared to plastic adherent cells. They exert potent immunosuppressive effects on proliferating naive CD4+ T cells, which is mediated via the production of nitric oxide (NO). Nevertheless, prolonged culture results in cellular senescence, loss of adipogenic differentiation and reduced immunosuppressive properties. Addition of growth factors to standard media (SM) produced significant genotypic and phenotypic changes. Cells cultured in SM supplemented with basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and platelet derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) were primed towards fat and cartilage, but had reduced immunosuppressive potential. In contrast, cells cultured with transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) had reduced tri-lineage potential but potent immunosuppressive properties that endured despite long term culture. I demonstrate using novel tissue engineering techniques that bFGF PαS MSCs generate substantial 3-D cartilage pellets. These data have implications for MSC therapy in humans.

Heart and lung transplantation activity is frustrated by the lack of availability of donor organs. The haemodynamic, hormonal and inflammatory changes that follow brain stem death leads to donor organ injury. Appropriate donor management is essential to avoid further damage to already injured donor heart and lungs. Hormone replacement therapy with tri-iodothyronine and methylprednisolone in organ donors has been reported to increase the retrieval rate of heart and lungs with improved function. In a prospective, randomised, double blind, controlled trial the role of hormone replacement therapy and early donor management on the donor heart and lung function and their retrieval rate was studied. Heart donor Outcome Early donor management was associated with significant improvement in donor heart function. It may also increase the retrieval rate of hearts for transplantation. However, administration of hormones neither influenced the donor heart function nor the heart retrieval rate. Serial echocardiography guides in identifying suitable donor hearts for transplantation during intensive management. Lung donor outcomes Early donor management was associated with significant increase in lung retrieval rate for transplantation. Despite management donor lung function deteriorated following brain stem death. Hormone replacement therapy did not increase the lung retrieval rate or affect the donor lung function. However, methylprednisolone administration leads to significant reduction in progressive donor lung water accumulation. Measurement of thermodilution lung water index predicted ultimate lung suitability for transplantation and recipient outcome. Conclusion Early donor management is the cornerstone to improve the donor heart function and to increase the lung retrieval rate. It may also increase the heart retrieval rate. Serial transthoracic echocardiography may guide in identifying suitable hearts that respond to donor management.

The kidneys are important organs that regulate the level of water and salts in the blood, produce hormones that help to control blood pressure, and maintain homeostasis of the organism by filtering waste products. Kidney disease can either be acute or chronic, the latter progressively worsening over time to become end stage renal disease (ESRD) – a stage when kidneys are non-functional. At present, the only treatment options for ESRD are transplantation or dialysis, which both have severe drawbacks in terms of morbidity, mortality and economic cost. Moreover, the incidence of ESRD is rising annually and an alternative therapy is needed. Therefore, in order to regenerate kidney tissue or prevent worsening of the kidney condition, a new therapy should be developed. One approach is to use embryonic stem cells.

Of the environmental factors which influence body weight, nutrients have the most impact. Saturated fatty acids (SFAs) are a macronutrient, which induce obesity, characterised by metabolic dysfunction and altered feeding behaviour. Currently, there are no effective pharmaceutical treatments for obesity. Nutraceutical intervention, including consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), represents a promising alternative. PUFAs oppose the effects of SFAs, attenuating weight gain by enhancing satiety. However, in studies using human and rodent models findings are difficult to interpret, due to variation in protocols. The primary aim of this project was to create a rational model of chronic PUFA consumption. Obesity is underpinned by alterations in hypothalamic neuronal plasticity including impairment of neurogenesis. These changes occur in response to nutrients or by regulation of appetite-related hormones. In contrast, dietary restriction stimulates neurogenesis, and evidence has suggested that PUFAs enhance hypothalamic neurogenesis. The secondary aim of this project was to pilot methods for stimulating and observing neurogenesis in hypothalamus of rat. These two lines of enquiry were pursued to begin addressing the complex research question of whether PUFAs exert beneficial effects on body weight by stimulating hypothalamic neurogenesis. Wistar rats fed commercially formulated diets equally enriched with high concentrations of SFAs and PUFAs, from lard and fish oil, respectively, for two months showed no difference in energy intake or body weight. Both diets induced leptin and insulin resistance, but PUFAs reduced triglyceride concentrations. Hence, PUFAs improved lipid metabolism independently of induced obese phenotype. The meal pattern signatures associated with each diet were also similar; however, PUFA-fed animals demonstrated enhanced diurnal satiety. Closer examination of the diet compositions revealed the overlap of results was likely due to the presence of SFAs in the PUFA diet. This led to reformulation, using fatty acids of greater purity. The chosen sources were coconut oil (SFAs), and a commercial preparation of omega-3 PUFAs. A shorter-term, preliminary investigation involving three weeks’ dietary exposure was conducted. Energy intake was again similar between SFA- and omega-3-fed animals but weight gain was attenuated and adiposity reduced by omega-3 feeding. However, the enhanced satiety previously observed was not borne out. A rise in concentration of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, known to be associated with beneficial effects of PUFA intake, in the final study week suggests that studies of longer duration may be required to fully assess the effects of dietary PUFAs. Concurrent pilot work showed that hypothalamic cell proliferation could be stimulated in response to simple enrichment (play tube) introduced to the cage. However, a full study failed to repeat these findings, supporting the notion that neurogenesis is subject to many influences, including age, species, strain and stress, the degrees of influence of which would have to be determined in a series of systematically controlled studies. Failure to stimulate cell proliferation in PUFA-fed rats suggested further that change in dietary fatty acid composition is not a powerful enough intervention to stimulate neurogenesis, when used alone in Wistar rats. In conclusion, application of appropriate controls for dietary energy content and composition show that benefits to body weight metabolism of long-term consumption of diets highly enriched with PUFAs, and, in particular, omega-3 fatty acids can be successfully modelled in rat. However, further work is required to determine the precise timeline of their emergence and underlying mechanisms.

Finding the suitable capital structure for small and medium size enterprises, SMEs, is vital. A suitable capital structure helps SMEs to stay alive in the competitive market and has a positive effect on the national economy. Wealth maximization is the first objective of the firms, and capital structure proposition shows how a firm plans to finance its projects to meet its first objective. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the impact of the capital structure determinants on the SMEs borrowing behavior. SMEs in this research are defined as the small independent privately held firm with less than 250 employees. In order to reach the purpose of this thesis, I have consulted the relevant theories of capital structure. By the support of the earlier studies, as well as the related theories, I have developed the testable hypotheses to examine the impact of capital structure determinants on the decomposed leverage level. To conduct this thesis, I have used the deductive approach, which is a similar approach suggested by the key reference of this study, Michaels et al (1999).   Size, age, profitability, growth, operating risk, and asset structure are selected as the determinant of capital structure. With the unique set of data gathered from 201 SMEs in Iran over the period of 2006 to 2010, the statistic panel data regression is used to analyze the empirical data. To investigate the borrowing behavior of the SMEs comprehensively, the observed SMEs were picked up from different manufacturing industries in Iran. The result of this research reveals that the impacts of capital structure determinants on SMEs leverage levels are different in terms of both magnitude and direction. The result indicates that profitability has a strong impact on SMEs borrowing decisions. Besides profitability, size and asset structure appear to have an impact on leverage level in compare with other determinants. This thesis finding shed lights on the necessity of using the maturity structure of debt (short-term debt and long-term debt) as dependent variables. Firms are more willing to finance their projects with short term debt, rather than long term debt. Long term debt is costly, and the probability of bankruptcy is higher with long term debt. Although long term debt is riskier for SMEs, but it shows the management confident in the firm’s future since it obliges the firm’s management to make legally binding future payments of interest. However, the empirical result of this study shows that all the determinants have an effect on the level of leverage in SMEs.

The importance of enhancing internal communication and its content during organisational change appears to be neglected by many organisations. Although change management literature agrees generally about the role that communication plays in facilitating change, there is still a dearth of empirical studies that focus on improving internal communication during organisational change phases. The evolution of communication technology has provided some new tools that can enhance internal communication within an organisation. This study explores the role of using of one of these new communication technologies in communicating organisational change through the development of a novel conceptual model. The developed model covers the communication needs in each phase of a planned change, and combines the benefits of communicating organisational change with the benefits of using Enterprise Social Networks (ESN), as found in the literature. The aim is to investigate empirically how ESN as a new internal communication technology can be employed to communicate organisational change effectively in order to facilitate that change. To do so, the researcher in this study has applied a qualitative approach through a case study strategy in order to validate the conceptual model being proposed. The researcher conducted 32 interviews and analysed all of them qualitatively using Nvivo software. The findings of the conducted study revealed that using ESN had many positive impacts on employees, such as increasing their awareness, engagement and participation, which helped to facilitate the overall change projects. Moreover, the study proved the suitability of the validated novel model to contribute in facilitating organisational change through ESN, which can guide leaders, managers, change agents and academics on how ESN can be used to communicate planned change effectively in order to facilitate it.

Patients undergoing oesophagectomy are at risk of developing Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), an immune mediated form of severe respiratory failure. The immunomodulatory properties of Vitamin D are increasingly recognised. We hypothesised that preoperative Vitamin D supplementation would reduce levels of perioperative alveolar oedema in patients undergoing oesophagectomy. Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with and at risk of ARDS. High dose supplementation with cholecalciferol is a safe and effective method of increasing Vitamin D levels. Supplementation reduces perioperative increases in inflammatory alveolar oedema. Circulating levels of the active form of Vitamin D relate to long term post-operative mortality. Patients who survive at least 2 years post-op have higher preoperative circulating numbers of Natural Killer cells. We did not find any evidence of an effect of Vitamin D on Natural Killer Cells. In conclusion, preoperative Vitamin D status relates to perioperative changes in inflammatory alveolar oedema and high dose Vitamin D supplementation is a safe and effective method of improving preoperative Vitamin D status. Preoperative cholecalciferol administration should be considered in patients with and at risk of vitamin D deficiency.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis, presented in six thematic chapters, investigates an approach for promoting the growth of small businesses in South Africa. Chapter 1 motivates the thesis by discussing the contested role of small businesses in reducing unemployment and fostering social equity. Chapter 2 reviews the small business development policy in South Africa and explicates the socioeconomic conditions underpinning the policy. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 are empirical analyses using data from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys of 2003 and 2007, and the World Bank Financial Crisis Survey of 2010 to determine key impediments to the growth of small businesses and characteristics of firms creating and retaining most jobs in South Africa. Chapter 3 uses two methods to investigate the key impediments. The first method is based on a count of obstacles that entrepreneurs rate as seriously affecting enterprise operations. The second estimates the effects of the obstacles on growth through sequential multivariate regressions and identifies binding constraints for different categories of firms. It emerges that medium-sized firms are mildly affected by most obstacles but micro and small firms are significantly affected by crime, electricity and transportation problems. The chapter provides important insight on the sequencing of interventions to address the impediments to growth. Chapter 4 studies the finance constraint. It evaluates the importance of the constraint firstly by assessing whether firms rating finance as a serious problem underperform firms rating the problem as less important. Thereafter, the chapter studies the experiences of firms when seeking external finance and identifies four levels of the finance constraint. Using an ordered logit model and a binary logit model, the chapter explores the profile of financially constrained firms. Results show that firms owned by ethnic groups disadvantaged in the apartheid era are more likely to be credit-constrained. The results also suggest that the likelihood of being credit-constrained decreases with higher levels of formal education. The results inform policy on the types of firms that financial interventions must target. Chapter 5 builds on a growing body of evidence which shows that a small proportion of firms in an economy account for over 50 percent of net new jobs. The evidence from the literature suggests that such high-growth enterprises have distinct characteristics that could make it possible for interventions to nurture or for other firms to emulate. The chapter employs two methods to investigate the characteristics of high-growth firms. The first is logit regression, which the investigation uses to determine characteristics of firms that create more jobs than the average firm. The characteristics are also interacted to identify interaction terms most associated with growth. The second method is quantile regression, which makes it possible to assess the importance of each characteristic for firms in different levels of growth rates. The results show that the typical high-growth firm is more likely to be black-owned. The results of the chapter however highlight the need for further research into characteristics that may perhaps explain high-growth firms more robustly than variables in the survey instrument. The research ends with a summary, a discussion of areas of further research, and policy recommendations in Chapter 6.

The main purpose of this dissertation is to show the main sources of financing that SMEs have access to, given that these companies represent most of the Portuguese business community. Secondly, it is intended to verify what types of financing and financial instruments companies use to obtain the desired financing and what is the purpose of the company in obtaining such financing. For that purpose a questionnaire is applied to companies, Finally, the study intends to understand if SMEs use or are aware of the help provided by public institutions, such as IAPMEI. With both the literature review and the application of the questionnaires the study concludes that the companies do not use nor exploit all the market hypotheses available for their financing. Despite the wide range of opportunities given by banks and other financial institutions, companies stick to the method they know, which is also the most common, the bank financing.
A presente dissertação tem como principal objetivo mostrar quais as principais fontes de financiamento a que as PMEs têm acesso, dado que estas empresas representam a maioria do tecido empresarial português. Em segundo lugar, pretende-se verificar, através de um inquérito efetuado a empresas, quais são os tipos de financiamento e instrumentos financeiros que as empresas utilizam por forma a obterem o financiamento desejado e qual a finalidade da empresa ao obter esse financiamento. Por fim, pretende-se perceber se as PMEs utilizam ou conhecem a ajuda prestada por instituições públicas, como o IAPMEI. Através da revisão da literatura e da aplicação dos questionários conclui-se com o estudo que as empresas não utilizam nem exploram todas as hipóteses de mercado disponíveis para o seu financiamento. As empresas, apesar da vasta gama de oportunidades dadas quer pela banca quer por outras instituições financeiras cingem-se ao método que conhecem, que é o financiamento mais comum, o financiamento bancário.

A company’s board of directors is ultimately responsible for putting effective corporate governance (CG) structures in place as mechanisms to enhance its accountability to stakeholders. An audit committee (AC), which is a subcommittee of the board, is one component of the company’s CG structures. In South Africa, legislation, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) listing requirements, and the King code and report of Governance for South Africa 2009 (King III) deal with the composition and responsibilities of ACs. As the shares of AltX listed companies, which are categorised as high-growth potential, small to medium-sized listed companies, are traded publicly, they are required to comply with the Companies Act and to establish an AC according to the Act’s composition requirements to fulfil mandatory responsibilities. In terms of the JSE listing requirements, AltX listed companies must appoint an AC or explain their reason(s) for not doing so. As the total market capitalisation of AltX listed companies has increased by 87% over the past three years, greater numbers of stakeholder groups are being affected. Since stakeholder groups are protected when companies implement effective CG processes, the purpose of this study is to understand the way in which the AC of an AltX listed company, as an example of a high-growth potential, small to medium-sized listed company, adds value to the company and its stakeholders. Attributes that contribute to the value added by ACs were identified as being the characteristics of AC members; the fulfilment of responsibilities through optimised activities; and the fulfilment of responsibilities by maintaining healthy relationships with the board and information providers. An explorative qualitative case-based research design was applied in terms of which a single AltX listed company was selected according to predetermined selection criteria. Data were collected using individual semi-structured interviews, field notes and company documents. Descriptive open coding techniques were used for data analysis with the findings of the study subsequently being presented in terms of a theoretical framework of the attributes that influence the extent to which the AC adds value. The findings of the study confirm that these attributes of the AC facilitate its ability to add value to the AltX listed company investigated and its stakeholders in terms of enlightened shareholder theory.

Under such circumstance, enterprise transection environment had changed, internal control system need to be adjusted to coordinate with IT to have maximum efficiency control, in this way, to lower risk and smooth operation. The research is based on operation activity cycle of ERP internal control system, through literature discussion to propose ERP internal control system assay. We will verify through case study to check the feasibility, and discuss the effectiveness of ERP internal control practice.
