Повний текст джерелаOur after industrial society of information is characterised by the market globalization, the development of information and communication technologies, and the rise of tertiary activities. In this context, remote work, namely telework, appears into organizations. Our research objective is to evaluate its impact of telework on the meaning of work and on the relations between work life and out of work life. We compare meaning of work dimensions and the exchanges between the domains of life between teleworkers and classic workers samples in two organizations, with different juridical statute. Then, we realise a more detailed analyse where the categories of telework are distinguished. According to the results, relations between work life and out of work life are influenced by the type of work practised. Traditional workers separate the domains of life, even though, teleworkers establish resources exchanges between their professional and private life into France Telecom Group. Telecommuting influences too the work social representation. Work isn’t conceivable without the notion of constraint among types of teleworkers. Our research proves how the model of activities system clarifies the mechanisms, used by subjects, to manage their work life and their out of work life. Structural theory of work social representation contributes to identify the work social representation, according to the category of worker practised and the type of organization studied. Data collection authorizes us to draw up a positive statement on telework in these two organizations. Other practical implications and news perspectives are also proposed

Повний текст джерелаThis research examines the effects of High-Performance Human Resource Practices (HPHRP) and Family-Friendly Work Practices (FFWP) on work-life interferences, well-being, and intention to leave the job. In addition, we examine the moderating influence of support from managers, family, and friends. Our problem statement is: how do FFWP and HPHRP influence the work-life interference and its outcomes, i.e., the well-being of employees in the workplace and their intention to leave the job? The research was conducted in both public and private sector banks in Pakistan. Data collection (322 respondents; 82.6% male, 17.4% female) of bank employees working in Pakistan (employees, middle and top-level management) was gathered through an online questionnaire. The partial least square (PLS-SEM) approach is employed to assess the research model.The results show that the two HRM practices studied - HPHRP and FFWP - have a significant positive effect on work-life interference. FFWP is significantly associated with turnover intention, but not with employee well-being. In contrast, HPHRP is significantly associated with employee well-being, but not with turnover intention. Managers’ support and support from family and friends act as moderators. We also show that if the absence of FFWP does not affect male employees’ intention to leave the job (IJT), this absence significantly increase female employees’ IJT. These results help to understand which management practices can support sustainable performances for women

The main goal is to compare the effects of the intention to harm, the cancellation of consequences, the apologies, the social proximity, the others'attitude, and the personality on the willingness to forgive, during physical aggressions and psychological aggressions, in the workplace and out of the workplace. The three studies were conducted with the Functional Theory of Cognition (Anderson, 1996). The results have shown that (a) the cancellation of consequences has a more important effect during a psychological aggression, (b) the intention to harm and the important effect during a physical aggression, (c) the schema of forgiveness is an additive nature in all situations and all types of agression and, (d) the agreableness and the neuroticism have a general effect of the propenstity to forgive

Повний текст джерелаThe effects of temporal factors on worker's behavior are analyzed for three classes of temporal conditions : temporal requirements of the task (machine-paced work, time sharing), variability of human functionning (circadian rythmicity), interactions between time of work and off-the-job life (especially concerning shiftwork). Worker's responses to time requirements implies coordination of analyses at three levels : precise identification of situation's parameters for temporal aspects but also for psychological functions ; evaluation of importance of performance as regard time criteria and cost associated to success ; strategies of regulation used by the subject according to the balance between risks of failure and workload. Furthermore analysis of the activity under time pressure must be conducted in the frame work of the global system including work and out-of-work activities. Also social meaning of work needs effective coordination between analysis of worker behaviorin the line of man-machine system-and analysis of worker motivation concerning the activity under temporal constraints. Systematic articulation of the frameworks of ergonomics and social psychology is necessary for the progress of research on workers' response to temporal factors in work situation

Повний текст джерелаLes employeurs français adoptent peu de pratiques d'harmonisation, comparés à leurs homologues américains et britanniques : sur la base d'entretiens approfondis avec 44 DRH, représentants des salariés et prestataires de service en France, je mets en lumière les effets sociétaux qui aboutissent à la moindre demande des salariés et à la moindre appétence des employeurs français pour ces pratiques.
Aux Etats-Unis et au Royaume-Uni, j'étudie les effets des pratiques d'harmonisation sur la relation Individu/Organisation (RIO), par une étude de cas chez GlaxoSmithKline (enquête sur 5160 salariés, 73 entretiens approfondis, observation participante). Il en ressort que l'équilibre travail - hors-travail n'est ni un pré-requis universel, ni une garantie de l'implication. Les pratiques d'harmonisation ont des effets majoritairement bénéfiques sur la RIO, au-delà de leurs seuls utilisateurs : elles créent de la loyauté, de la fierté, sont perçues comme un avantage, ou utilisées comme outil de management. Mais elles peuvent être délétères, créant de la déception ou une obligation de rester. Certains salariés y sont indifférents. Un modèle, ainsi qu'un arbre de décision, détaillent les facteurs importants pour recueillir les bénéfices de ces pratiques et en éviter les effets pervers.

The results indicate (1) that the relations between work and non-work structures are multi-dimensional, (2) and that different processes of causality between work and non-work activities exist in the same life space and are operating at different levels of application. The cultural appurtenance influences more the representation of non-work, whereas the appurtenance to an occupational and social class influences more the representation of work

Повний текст джерелаThe balance between personal and professional life is a recurring theme in our societies as well as the spillover phenomena, as well work on the personal life and the personal life on work, were seized by HR managers. As such, operational solutions have been proposed through, the researchers admit that family-friendly practices auch as flexible hours, childcare services on site, company conciergeries etc. However, these practices being relatively undeveloped in France so we can ask on which basis can they be implemented, and especially what their real role on employees’ work-life balance? This question requires an examination of perceptions of work-life balance and its possible effects on job satisfaction. A research model integrating perceptions of work-life balance, intentions to use harmonization practices, and job satisfaction, we. proposed. ln support of an empirical study on two samples of 210 and 224 French employees in the private sector, we have shown that these practices are considered as a real measure supporting work-life balance, and may be, in this sense, a lever for job satisfaction. It also appears that these practices and balance itself are subject to different assessments according to employees' profiles, and finally, while the these practices are in favor of work-life balance, the work-life balance may be a determinant of job satisfaction

Повний текст джерелаThis research deals with cognitive processes underlying behaviour in time-sharing situations. Two aspects are developped: tasks'coordination and cognitive control when switching from one task to the other. Three different approaches are considered to explain the information processing interferences usually observed in these situations. According to a strutural view, two tasks will interfere because they compete for common processing mechanisms or structures. According to multiple-resource theory, two tasks will interfere because of an overlapping of processing resources. According to a third view, the use of a general activation process, requiring attention, may explain processing interferences. Our hypothesis claims the existence of a control process in charge of tasks'temporal organisation and resource allocation when switching from one task to the other. The use of this control process should be facilitated under weak tasks'demands. Our experiment involved 96 subjects in a 2x2x2 between-subjects factorial design : timing requirements, tasks'complexity and proximity were manipulated. Results show an important effect of timing requirements on performance. Three different response strategies were identified which give evidence of a temporal organisation of processing. Their use is induced at once by situation demands and "spontaneous" strategies. The use of the control'process involve an increase in responce time and errors when switching from one task to the other. "typical" time-sharing errors were identified; they prove the difficulty in establishing the control'process

The MARCINIAK and KUCZYNSKI'S two zones model is developed introducing the rotation of the anisotropic and position of the"limit stress curves are studied. And then we propose a method to use these curves, as stop tests in the numerical simulation of deep drawing operations

Повний текст джерелаBased on the practice of clinical psychology in a medico-psychological centre and of psycho-analytic family psychotherapy, the author deals with functions and compétence of the psycho-analytic frame, for its applications to psycho analytic group family psychotherapies. This question has been raised during a previous research which dealt problems in setting a thérapeutic frame in adoptive situations. Frame's boundaries and what happened out of the frame of proposed structure (individual or family) took a central heuristic meaning which extendedin fact to a lot of other families in family therapy. During this research, frame-off-frame problematic is developed, with hypothesis that off-frame elements are coming from family origin and affects therapists in their counter-transfer. Behaviours of implicated families are not attacks, they have a meaning : it is necessary to connect them with family traumatisms that can not be contained in the frame. The method must be analysed in a dynamic process of the frame. Following P. Bourdieu's perspective which states that transformation of representations modifies object and world perception, the authors examine how the evolution of central concepts of the frame, as well as modem conceptions of " negative " and traumatic in psychic transmission between generations, raises the competence of the frame, the frame representing the ensemble of therapist device (material and psychic) and related theories. Concepts of transfer-counter-transfer, transfer on the frame, of origin, of attack to the frame, of negative therapeutic reaction and of symbiosis are revisited. Shifting of concepts utilisation, from individual frame to group frame and family frame, evidences the increased importance of counter-transfer : the work of counter-transfer reinforces the attractive function of the frame and tends to contain all that was out of the frame in the initial model of individual care. Yet, in the field of psycho-analytic family therapy, an off-frame remains, related to family behaviours that damage the frame. To approach the mentioned problems, the author proposes some intelligibility of it through the concept of " original family schemes ". These schemes would act as proto-organizer of the family group and might be represented as sensori-emotional, behaviourand phantasmatic combinations. They would be modes of group contention of origins, they would impound and express in a pre-symbolic way, the traumatisms of generation transmission. They are marked and singularised in four clinical examples, thanks to observations of entrance modalition and use by the family group of the proposed therapeutic frame. Marking, content and representation of these origin family schemes, in the counter-transfer, in manifestations and elaborations of inter-transfer of therapeutists, allows to find the limits of psycho-analytic family therapy frame and to augment its competence toward limit and traumatic family situations

Повний текст джерелаTeaching preparation can be defined as the whole of the time devoted to the profession outside the classroom, time which forms a fluctuating boundary between one's professional and private life. Based on a study of the professional criteria of teaching, preparation is identified as a moment which has a dual role at the center of the professional process. It has, on the one hand, a role of rationalization : from the irrational of individual habitus, it forms professionalism. On the other hand it fulfills a role of identification : from the diverse conceptions of education, it forms a habitus of the teaching corps. A questionnaire concerning 1680 teachers, ranging from pre-school classes to secondary school enables us to draw up a typology of teachers who construct varying types of professionalism with their preparation activities. Observation of the way these are using in practice in 35 elementary classes completes the analysis of the process and shows how preparation determines practice and above all how it ensures other functions

Повний текст джерелаLa Patrouille de France (PAF) has ensured a successful work of representation ordered by the Air Force. Quite surprisingly, its success is built on an annual partial renewal of its pilots’ team, with changes of positions and the mandatory departure of the leader. Also, the risky learning context of close flight sessions pushes the group to build their own references and ways of working, while integrating a military know-how. This knowledge is transmitted only orally, from the pilots with the more up-to-date experience. The group relies on self-training and regularly question themselves thanks to multiple feedback processes. My research deals with the way this group of pilots are adapting, by building and developing their collective activity in facing change constraints.For that purpose, the research interviews focused on “habitus” around interaction on activity, high performance sport coaching and trust relationships in order for an agreement to emerge between the pilots. These agreements allow to draw a picture of the PAF’s work activities, whilst other aspects, more rarely evoked concerning team work, link to human management, difficulties of the work assigned, self-assigned, assessment, communication as well as the selective process of training inside the group. The research presents an integration of these factors within a full model of the work activity, whose axes can be of valuable help in a transfer perspective destined to other groups learning in trainings

Повний текст джерелаFew studies have been conducted on the handling of homosexuality by gays and lesbians within the working environment. The associations defending LGBT rights legitimately highlight the impact of homophobic working cultures on the visibility of gays and lesbians. Instead of using the apprehension of potential homophobic reactions as the sole explanatory factor, this thesis intends to place the choice of gays and lesbians within a wider series of issues and a more comprehensive logic. Regarding the way an individual handles their homosexuality at work, this thesis intends to identify what pertains to the individual's structure (and especially the place occupied by homosexuality in their global identity) and what pertains to the interactions (the working culture). From a series of interviews conducted with 53 men and women of diverse ages and working mainly in three professional sectors (forces of order, education, medical-social field), we could identify the different linkages between identity-related issues and working cultures. After studying how individuals handle their homosexuality outside of work, we studied the mobilizations of the professional environments. Finally, we studied how individuals act within the specific constraints of their working environment, based on their identity-related issues. This approach shed light on underlying and invisible norms existing in the professional worlds and gave the keys to understanding other « non-standard » identities in the professional environment

For everyone, these representations thrive not only on the interraction with direct environment, on the basis of which the action's construction is affected. But they also thrive on a collective layout of norms, values and principles proper to a social group. We have got down to find the resulting effects of time representations on practices of wage-earning work, that's to say, work done by someone in exchange for a salary. Indeed, since 1960 gabonese public administration is ruled by a "judeo-christian and capitalist" time according to Rossatanga-Rignault's catchphrase, implanted by the former colonial power. The issue of our research is to examine in 2016 this time-related functioning in order to certify if it includes or not specific collective representations to Gabonese society and time-related experience of the local agents

Повний текст джерелаThis work is based on two main areas: on the one hand, the private study of middle school students, a few discussed topic in science education (in mathematics); on the other hand, the teaching of the equations of the first degree with one unknown, which aggregates many elementary algebra concepts and which is a source of difficulties for students. Thanks to the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (Chevallard, 1999), we re-examine these difficulties from an institutional point of view: we assume that some of the learning needs relative to private study and subject knowledge are not explicitly organized by the institution (Castela) while these needs are necesseray to build a an appropriate personal relationship to equations. Based on an epistemological mathematic organization reference (Bosch et Gascon, 2005) related to the equations of the first degree and on a research overview about private study, we build and analyse the impacts of a teaching sequence on students learnings

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis aims to better understand men and women's choices in the workplace, to better understand and overcome the perpetuation of professional gender inequalities in the public sector, as this organizational system is supposed to be neutral and equal by definition. This work, composed of a series of studies, was carried out under a convention to establish an internal device for promoting equality between men and women as a cross-cutting project.On the theoretical aspect, social categorization theory and social representation theory (Moscovici, 1961) are articulated. We analyze the effects of sex, gender – e.g. gendered stereotypes identification (Bem, 1974) - hierarchical status and job sector on social representations of gender equality, professional success and competence. We use categorical and prototypical analyses (Vergès, 1992) and discriminant analysis (Doise et al., 1992). In addition, we analyse the effect of gender in interaction with sex on work and private life balance. Our results reveal the need to take into account cultural factors, such as gender stereotypes and social representations, in order to explain the gender gap in the professional field. Finally, we discuss our results at a societal and ideological level which contain elements that can be used to negotiate feminine and masculine values in the sexual division of labor

Повний текст джерелаOur research concerns the influence of the institutional framework on the behavior of organizations. In a particular way, she is interested in the way the actors adapt themselves to the institutional framework of the organizational field in which they operate. These actors can be even brought to try to modify this framework so that he corresponds to their interests. The RSE is arrested in our reflection as an institutional phenomenon, susceptible to be implemented by means of the normative, coercive and mimetic pressures. The field of observation of this research concerns the waste of domestic packagings and end-of-life vehicles. The obtained results indicate that the type of waste, the size of the producers, the degree of institutionalization and the characteristics of the organizational field strongly influence the action of the institutions and organizations embedded in the studied field. The results are reflected in the following theoretical contributions: contribution to studies on the formation of organizational fields; contribution to the study of institutional change through institutional confrontation; contribution to the theoretical current that defines CSR as a business case strategy; the REP principle as a particular extension of CSR

Повний текст джерелаWork in organizational socialization (OS) over the past five decades has focused more on theorganizational (Van Maanen and Schein, 1979), individual (Louis, 1980) and interactionist approach(Reichers, 1987). As for the relational approach, some research has considered relations with socializingagents, as a source of information for new employees (NE) (Bauer and Green, 1998; Morrison, 1993),and rarely as a "relation". which supposes a dynamic, and to a certain extent a reciprocity between theactors (Coyle-Shapiro, and Shore, 2008). New employee relationships play a key role in NE socialization,not only for the information they provide (Ostroff and Kozlowski, 1992), but also as a primary source ofsocial support (Bauer and Green, 1998). However, work relationships can make the process of OSstressful and difficult (Kammeyer-Mueller et al. 2013, Lapointe, 2013). We fit our research into thisapproach, and we aim to understand the role of labor relations in new employee socialization and itsconsequences. Therefore, we use the psychological contract (Rousseau, 1989) and the theory of resourceconservation (Hobfoll, 1989) to understand the reciprocal expectations and obligations in the context oflabor relations, and the consequences in terms of gain or loss of resources. The qualitative approachbased on a multiple case study allows us to answer our research questions. Thus, we selected five businesscases in the Cameroonian context and conducted semi-structured interviews with 69 new recruits, and 8organizational representatives. Data analysis was done through thematic content analysis (Miles andHuberman, 2003) using NVIVO 12 software. The results reveal that work / non-work relationships ortheir absence lead to accumulation or loss of personal, relational, and organizational resources. Spiritualresources seem inexhaustible and very useful in the context of loss of resources for NE. The contributionsof our thesis mainly lie in highlighting a typology of new socialized employees and the dynamics of theresources they mobilize in labor relations

More specifically, the study concerns the possibility of identifying specific features of written culture and dissemination of school form gathered under the name of "scripturo-scolaires" features, in remote families of the school world. In view of the important academic failure of students from the working-class and of the gradually shared responsibility for this failure to families, we observed parents assisting their child's homework. To go forward in the knowledge of parenting practices in this role attributed to them, the choice fell on the study of the time homework located at the interface of school and family. Analyses allowed to study what parents do with their children homework and what light this support brings in terms of resistance to school domination. The study covers the follow-up of six less stable popular families in French speaking Belgium during a school year. The research allowed to show different modalities of “relation to school” and “relation to learning” arranged in multiple ways in the families. They enable us to not qualify working classes assignment to the single mode of “oralo-pratique” socialization and, thus, to progress in the knowledge of these ones

Повний текст джерелаThe main objective of this master thesis is to verify the moderating effect of social support outside of work on the relation between the work organization conditions and burnout. In a second time, we also try to determine the direct effect that each variable has on burnout. To help us achieve our research we used secondary data from l’Équipe de Recherche sur le Travail et la Santé Mentale, which are based on a sample of 410 employees (civilian and police) of the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) consulted from December 2008 to February 2009. The completed multivariate analyses revealed that many work organization conditions impact the level of burnout of the SPVM employees. Indeed, skills utilization, decision authority and social support at work are three work organization conditions that help to prevent burnout. In contrast, psychological demands, contractual demands (i.e. irregular or unpredictable work schedule), abusive supervision and work to family conflict are four factors increasing the level of burnout. Moreover, our results show that living with a life partner, not having a child,living a family to work conflict and having a high score for the trait of personality related to agreeableness are related to a high level of burnout. In parallel, multivariate analyses did not confirm the moderating effect of social support outside of work on the relation between work organisation conditions and burnout.

Повний текст джерелаSince 2006, the Programme Hors Normes (PHN) (Standards Non-compliance Program) of the “Direction de santé publique de Montréal ”, has set new guidelines for Occupational Health Teams with regard to workers who have been exposed to environmental concentrations of chemical agents that exceed permissible exposure levels, in other words, that are “standards non-compliant.” The PHN oversees the reporting of non-compliance to the relevant authorities and ensures that employers conduct rigorous follow-up. In doing so, the program has redefined the roles of occupational health team nurses. This exploratory study aims to describe the representations of these nurses with regard to the PHN and to better understand how they represent their practice into the PHN. Individual semi-directed interviews were conducted among seven nurses. Qualitative analysis of the data, through categorization and consistent comparison of narratives, reveals the various ways nurses represent their practice in the PHN. Their representations of their practice appear to derive from four elements: work organization, work relationships, intervention target, and work satisfaction. To increase nurses’empowerment, to take into account the ways in which he PHN has prompted them to reflect on their practice, and to promote cross-sector and cross-professional cooperation, the study suggests that nurses should participate in the planning and implementation of intervention programs and that on-going training should be provided in order to further harmonize professional practice.

Повний текст джерелаWork and family are often considered as two domains competing for the time, energy and attention of workers. Positive synergies could nonetheless exist at the interface between these two life domains. Notably, psychological well-being could spillover from one domain to the other. Theoretical frameworks about the spillover of psychological well-being exist (e.g., Edwards & Rothbard, 2000; Greenhaus & Powell, 2006), but very few studies have evaluated the mechanisms through which work and family psychological well-being influence each other. Previous studies do not adequately capture the process within which spillover mechanisms operate for two reasons. On the one hand, they use global concepts encompassing the whole spillover process, thereby disregarding internal mechanisms. On the other hand, they mainly use cross-sectional designs which cannot capture the processual nature of the proposed mechanisms. The objective of this thesis is therefore to evaluate mechanisms that could explain work-family psychological well-being spillover. The first article evaluates the mediating role of work performance in the influence of psychological well-being outside of work on psychological well-being at work, the mechanism most supported by work-family interface theories. Hence, the article explores this mechanism in depth by evaluating it according to two psychological well-being conceptualizations, as well as two types of performance. Two studies were conducted: one using a two-wave design with a 7.5-month delay and the other measuring experiences on a given workday. Results support the mediating role of performance in both studies and shed light on the distinction between cognitive well-being spillover and affective well-being spillover. The second article explores three other spillover mechanisms: life satisfaction (mediator), originating domain identity centrality, and work-family boundary strength (moderators). Theoretical articulations peripheral to work-family spillover enhance the understanding of the spillover process from work to family and inversely. Six thousand seventy-seven young workers answered three questionnaires with a delay of 11 weeks between each measurement time. Path analyses support the mediating role of life satisfaction. Furthermore, we discovered that the more an individual considers family as an important life domain, the more its family satisfaction will positively influence its life satisfaction. Finally, home boundary strength appears to limit the psychological well-being spillover from work to family. The main contribution of this thesis is its articulation of different theoretical propositions in one consistent work-family psychological well-being spillover model, as well as its empirical evaluation. Our studies build on previous literature by tapping on diverse samples and rigorous methods. The results of this thesis show practical implications for workers, organizations, and society.

Повний текст джерелаThis research is an analysis of the perception on their activities of eight women of different age groups who have undertaken or are still practicing various forms of remunerated sexual activities in an indoor context. Most common forms of remunerated sexual activities addressed by women in the study include nude dancing with and without contacts, escort services, massage parlours and the phenomenon commonly known as "sugar daddy", when women exchange services for remuneration with a particular client. Even though street prostitution was not specifically addressed in the study, two female participants in the sample practiced both indoor and outdoor activities. The term “remunerated sexual activities” has been chosen to ensure a neutral perspective. We wanted to focus on an unbiased approach that encompasses both common views on prostitution, on the one hand, the one that is known to be the abolitionist vision, which maintains that prostitution is a form of exploitation and of sexual violence committed primarily against women, and in that sense, it should be decriminalized for women but criminalize customers and pimps. On the other hand, the “pro-sex work” vision, arguing that "sex work" is a choice and it is a job like any other, deserves to be decriminalized completely, even for customers and pimps. Our approach was used essentially to get the subjective visions, that might be more nuanced than what we hear in the writings and debates on the subject, a way of giving a voice to those women we do not hear a lot about. The theoretical framework that underlies our analysis is the intersection of discrimination. The main sources of discrimination that emerged in our sample were those of age, social and economic status and ethnicity, for one person. Those sources of vulnerabilities increased the probabilities for women to go toward those practices, to stay in it and to return after a break, sometimes to meet their basic needs, to be able to pay for drugs or to reimburse some debts and/or afford luxury. The aim of the study is to discover and understand the perception of women regarding their experience in various forms of indoor remunerated sexual activities. To achieve this, we describe, understand and analyze the path that led women into engaging in remunerated sexual activities; identify and understand their journey and experiences based on their type of practice, more or less intense, more or less varied and more or less extended in time, of remunerated sexual activities and finally, place their perspective on the continuum of the social debate surrounding the phenomenon, whether it is more a way to exploit women versus a form of work like any other or somewhere in between, where we could locate the perspectives of women on a continuum where many of them found their way into more nuanced visions of their reality. A qualitative methodology was used where semi-structured interviews were conducted. It allows to discover nuanced perspectives among them, and for others, to validate their perspective among the polarized visions we often hear in the actual debates and studies, meaning some of them situate their realities more in a form of sexual exploitation and others in a common form of work.

Повний текст джерелаThis doctoral thesis aims to understand the role played by the regulated occupations as a determinant of psychological distress of the working population in Quebec and Canada. This, in a context where several professional organizations, representing regulated occupations, are concerned about the mental health of their members and the pressure exerted on them in an economy characterized by important shortages of labor. This thesis was also inspired by the many limitations observed after a literature review on work and mental health, whereas the differentiated risks which would be subjected to these professionals, compared to the total working population, remains largely undocumented. Is there a direct link between the regulated occupation and the experience of psychological distress? What working conditions contribute to the development or accentuate psychological distress for these regulated occupations? In order to better understand the role played by the regulated occupations in psychological distress, this thesis proposes a multidimensional theoretical model which postulates that the constraints and resources are generated by a set of social structures including the regulated occupation, the working conditions, family, social network outside of work and personal characteristics. This model stems from the micro and macro theories in sociology (Alexander et al., 1987; Ritzer, 1996), the agent-structure approach (Archer, 1995; Giddens, 1987) as well as the social stress theory (Pearlin, 1999). Three hypotheses are subject to analysis through the model. The first hypothesis assumes that regulated occupations, work conditions, family, social network outside the workplace, and individual characteristics contribute directly and jointly to explaining the level of psychological distress. The second hypothesis induced by the proposed model postulates that the workplace mediates the relationship between regulated occupations and psychological distress levels. The third and final research hypothesis postulates that the relationship between the workplace and psychological distress levels is moderated by individual characteristics, as well as by family and the social network outside the workplace.These hypotheses have been validated using longitudinal data from the National population health survey (NPHS) (cycles 1 to 7). The results of these analyses are presented in three articles submitted for publication, which are the chapters 5-7 of this thesis. Overall, the theoretical model gets an important empirical support and suggests that the regulated occupations directly influence the chances of living psychological distress over time as well as the level of psychological distress itself. The results also suggest that the regulated occupations are exposed to differentiated risks in terms of working conditions likely to generate psychological distress. The contribution of the workplace and regulated occupations is exercised independently of other dimensions of the model (family, social network outside of work, personal characteristics). The results also corroborate the importance in considering many dimensions of the life of an individual in the psychological distress and to put on the agenda the importance of developing new theoretical models, better suited to the realities characterizing today’s working environments in which knowledge workers work. This thesis concludes on the implications of these findings for research, and the benefits it brings to the labor market and for the future development of the professional system in Quebec and Canada.
