Early in Tod Machover's opera Death and the Powers, the main character, Simon Powers, is subsumed into a technological environment of his own creation. The theatrical set comes alive in the form of robotic, visual, and sonic elements that allow the actor to extend his range and influence across the stage in unique and dynamic ways. The environment must compellingly assume the behavior and expression of the absent Simon. This thesis presents a new approach called Disembodied Performance that adapts ideas from affective psychology, cognitive science, and the theatrical tradition to create a framework for thinking about the translation of stage presence. An implementation of a system informed by this methodology is demonstrated. In order to distill the essence of this character, we recover performance parameters in real-time from physiological sensors, voice, and vision systems. This system allows the offstage actor to express emotion and interact with others onstage. The Disembodied Performance approach takes a new direction in augmented performance by employing a nonrepresentational abstraction of a human presence that fully translates a character into an environment. The technique and theory presented also have broad-reaching applications outside of theater for personal expression, telepresence, and storytelling.

I present a simple Simultaneous Abstraction Calculus, where the familiar lambda-abstraction over single variables is replaced by abstraction over whole sets of them. Terms are applied to partial assignments of objects to variables. Variants of the system are investigated and compared, with respect to their semantic and proof theoretic properties. The system overcomes the strict ordering requirements of the standard lambda-calculus,and is shown to provide the kind of "non-selective" binding needed for Dynamic Montague Grammar and Discourse Representation Theory. It is closely related to a more complex system, due to Peter Aczel and Rachel Lunon, and can be used for Situation Theory in a similar way. I present versions of these theories within an axiomatic, property-theoretic framework, based on Aczels Frege Structures. The aim of this work is to provide the means for integrating various semantic theories within a formal framework,so that they can share what is common between them, and adopt from each other what is compatible with them.

Hardware-software co-design techniques are very suitable to develop the next generation of sensornet applications, which have high computational demands. By making use of a low power FPGA, the peak computational performance of a sensor node can be improved without significant degradation of the standby power dissipation. In this contribution, we present a methodology and tool to enable hardware/software co-design for sensor node application development. We present the integration of nesC, a sensornet programming language, with GEZEL, an easy-to-use hardware description language. We describe the hardware/software interface at different levels of abstraction: at the level of the design language, at the level of the co-simulator, and in the hardware implementation. We use a layered, uniform approach that is particularly suited to deal with the heterogeneous interfaces typically found on small embedded processors. We illustrate the strengths of our approach by means of a prototype application: the integration of a hardware-accelerated crypto-application in a nesC application.

Computer models are used extensively to investigate biological systems. Many of these systems can be described in terms of fields???spatially- and temporally- varying scalar, vector and tensor properties defined over domains. For example, the spatial variation of muscle fibers is a vector field, the spatial and temporal variation in temperature of an organ is a scalar field, and the distribution of stress across muscle tissue is a tensor field. In this thesis I present my research on how to represent fields in a format that allows researchers to store and distribute them independently of models and to investigate and manipulate them intuitively. I also demonstrate how the work can be applied to solving and analysing biomedical models. To represent fields I created a two-layer system. One layer, called the Field Representation Language (FRL), represents fields by storing numeric, analytic and meta data for storage and distribution. The focus of this layer is efficiency rather than usability. The second layer, called the Abstract Field Layer (AFL), provides an abstraction of fields so that they are easier for researchers to work with. This layer also provides common operations for manipulating fields as well as transparent conversion to and from FRL representations. The applications that I used to demonstrate the use of AFL and FRL are (a) a fields visualisation toolkit, (b) integration of models from different scales and solvers, and (c) a solver that uses AFL internally. The layered architecture facilitated the development of tools that use fields. A similar architecture may also prove useful for representations of other modelled entities.

Die Erforschung der neuronaler Grundlagen des Arbeitsgedächtnisses (WM) fand breite Aufmerksamkeit, konzentrierte sich aber auf die Speicherung sensorischer Inhalte. Beweise für die kurzfristige Aufrechterhaltung abstrakter, verbaler oder kategorischer Informationen sind selten. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Untersuchung der neuronalen Repräsentation von WM-Inhalten auf verschiedenen Abstraktionsebenen. Ich stelle hier drei empirische Studien vor, in denen fMRT, multivariate Musteranalyse oder probabilistische Modelle als Hauptmethoden eingesetzt wurden. Die erste Studie identifizierte kortikale Regionen, die den WM-Inhalt eines Skripts behielten. Chinesische Muttersprachler wurden gebeten, sich bekannte chinesische Zeichen zu merken, was die verbale Kodierung stark fördern. Die Ergebnisse zeigten links lateralisierte sprachbezogene Hirnareale als Kandidatenspeicher für verbale Inhalte. Die zweite und dritte Studie zielten darauf ab, die Hypothese zu testen, dass Farbe als eine Kombination aus einer visuellen Repräsentation und einer kategorischen Repräsentation gespeichert wird. Die zweite Studie verwendete ein sensorisches Kodierungsmodell und ein empirisch basiertes kategorisches Kodierungsmodell, um jeweils zwei Quellen neuronaler Repräsentationen zu charakterisieren. Farbinformationen wurden in drei farbbezogenen ROIs dekodiert: V1, V4, VO1, und insbesondere wurde eine Erhöhung der kategorischen Repräsentation in vorderen kortikalen Arealen beobachtet. In der dritten Studie wurde die verzögerte Verhaltensreaktion untersucht, die ein systematisches Bias-Muster zeigte; es wurde ein probabilistisches Dual-Content-Modell implementiert, das ein mit den experimentellen Ergebnissen hoch korreliertes Antwortmuster erzeugte; dies bestätigte die Hypothese der mnemonischen Dual-Content Repräsentation. Research on the neural basis of working memory (WM) has received broad attention but has focused on storage of sensory content. Evidence on short-term maintenance of abstract verbal or categorical information is scarce. This thesis aims to investigate neural representation of WM content at different levels of abstraction. I present here three empirical studies that employed fMRI, multivariate pattern analysis or probabilistic modeling as major methods. The first study identified cortical regions that retained WM content of a script. Native Chinese speakers were asked to memorize well-known Chinese characters which strongly facilitated verbal coding. Results indicated left lateralized language-related brain areas as candidate stores for verbal content. The second and the third studies aimed to test the hypothesis that color is memorized as a combination of the low-level visual representation and the abstract categorical representation. The second study utilized a conventional sensory encoding model and a novel empirical-based categorical encoding model to characterize two sources of neural representations. Color information was decoded in three color-related ROIs: V1, V4, VO1, and notably, an elevation in categorical representation was observed in more anterior cortices. In the third study, the delayed behavioral response was examined, which exhibited a systematic bias pattern; a probabilistic dual-content model was implemented, which produced response patterns highly correlated with experimental results; this confirmed the hypothesis of dual-content mnemonic representations. These studies together suggest a division of labor along the rostral-caudal axis of the brain, based on the abstraction level of memorized contents.

Reading with Gilles Deleuze, this thesis explores art as a production that abandons representation as a formation of identity in favour of an ontology of becoming. I argue that the move to abstraction in painting resonates with the aim of "thought without image" because it counters representation with a radical materiality that returns painting to the movement of matter. In order to situate Deleuze's thinking on art within a trajectory of a philosophy of becoming I open the thesis with a chapter on Bergson and Merleau-Ponty. Here I introduce the notion of 'thinking in painting' and argue that, while in Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of art painting is a pedagogical investigation of the pre-human, chaotic and invisible 'depth' of a lived visible world, Deleuze takes Bergson's commitment to the possibility of moving beyond the human seriously and reverses the order of perception in order to seize the non-human virtual that eludes actualization. For Deleuze, the task of painting is therefore not to reveal the ontogenesis of the actual and the lived, but to extract the virtual and to embody it as a monument to that event. In abstraction the interest moves from the mechanism of perception to the work of paint, and in the subsequent chapters on Mondrian, Pollock, Klee and Bacon I explore specific practices and their peculiar logic of sensation. In Mondrian we see the strange space of virtuality unleashed when the line is not constrained by the closure of the punctual system, and in Pollock's explosive "all-over" paintings identify that space not as a chaos but as a chaosmosis or machinic heterogeneity. I argue that by understanding these modulating and rhythmic compositions as haptic spaces, we break through the distancing of visibility and can begin to think at the level of expressive matter. I then turn to Klee, and using the famous image of "taking a walk with a line" explore the notion of the emergent figure in the context of Klee's aim to "render visible". What we find is an art where space and the form of expression works on the plane of composition and refers only to the unfolding rhythms of the abstract line. In the final chapter I discuss Bacon's portraits and look at how the multiplicity of the event that is maintained in the diagrammatic composition is drawn into the recognizable face. I conclude that the embodiment of the non-human event forces thought to confront the possibility of the emergent identity that is realized in the abstraction of "thinking in painting".

Karst aquifers are characterized by highly conductive conduit flow paths embedded in a less conductive fissured and fractured matrix resulting in strong permeability contrasts with structured heterogeneity and anisotropy. Groundwater storage occurs predominantly in the fissured matrix. Hence, most karst models assume quasi steady-state flow in conduits neglecting conduit associated drainable storage (CADS). The concept of CADS considers storage volumes, where karst water is not part of the active flow system but rather hydraulically connected to conduits (for example karstic voids and large fractures). The disregard of conduit storage can be inappropriate when direct water abstraction from karst conduits occurs, e.g. large scale pumping. In such cases, CADS may be relevant. Furthermore, the typical fixed head boundary condition at the karst outlet can be inadequate for water abstraction scenarios because unhampered water inflow is possible. The objective of this paper is to analyze the significance of CADS and flow-limited boundary conditions on the hydraulic behavior of karst aquifers in water abstraction scenarios. To this end, the numerical hybrid model MODFLOW-2005 Conduit Flow Process Mode 1 (CFPM1) is enhanced to account for CADS. Additionally, a fixed-head limited-flow (FHLQ) boundary condition is added that limits inflow from constant head boundaries to a user-defined threshold. The affect and proper functioning of these modifications is demonstrated by simplified model studies. Both enhancements, CAD storage and the FHLQ boundary, are shown to be useful for water abstraction scenarios within karst aquifers. An idealized representation of a large-scale pumping test in a karst conduit is used to demonstrate that the enhanced CFPM1 is potentially able to adequately represent water abstraction processes in both the conduits and the matrix of real karst systems.

Throughout the twentieth century, the relationship between representation and abstraction has been regarded predominantly in terms of opposition. One of the prominent early twentieth-century defenders of this approach is Wilhelm Worringer (1881-1965), who introduces representation and abstraction as antithetic modes of art-making in Abstraction and Empathy. A Contribution to the Psychology of Style (1908). However, while he distinguishes between abstraction and representation on theoretical grounds, Worringer also observes that, in the history of art, these modes of art-making coexist. The current thesis examines Worringer’s approach to the writing of art history and theory, inquiring into his perspective on the personal responses of viewers and artists to the world, and the manifestations of these responses in art. Abstraction and Empathy addresses issues of empathy, form, and will, in aesthetics and art-making; it discusses and extends the writings of Theodor Lipps, Immanuel Kant, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Alois Riegl. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Worringer’s book attracted much attention: like its sequel, Form in Gothic (1910), it was often associated with the rise to prominence of Expressionism in Germany. Later in the twentieth century, Worringer’s thought came under the scrutiny of Rudolf Arnheim, who criticized Worringer’s emphasis on abstract-representational opposition. Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari praised Worringer’s approach to antithesis, yet questioned the terms Worringer proposed as opposites. For Arnheim, Deleuze and Guattari, alternatives to the antithesis between abstraction and representation became visible. Indeed, in Worringer’s time, artists such as Adolf Hildebrand, Ferdinand Hodler, Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet and Wassily Kandinsky underscored the common grounds between representation and abstraction. Exploring Worringer’s Abstraction and Empathy and Form in Gothic, as well as the words and works of Hildebrand, Hodler, Cézanne, Monet and Kandinsky, this thesis aims to highlight abstract-representational interplay as observable in early twentieth-century writing and art-making.

Deux représentations du territoire sont majoritairement proposées pour être covisualisées de multiples façons (loupe, curseurs, vues asservies, etc.) : la carte topographique et l'orthophotographie. Ces deux représentations apportent une vision complémentaire du territoire : la carte topographique est l'archétype même de l'abstraction et l'orthophotographie renvoie une perception réaliste du territoire. Pour permettre à l'utilisateur de covisualiser ces deux types de représentations, nous préconisons de ne pas chercher un mélange graphique idéal mais plutôt de produire un continuum cartographique formé d'un ensemble continu de représentations intermédiaires mixant données topographiques et orthophotographie. Notre objectif est de permettre à l'utilisateur de choisir sa position entre les deux extrémités en contrôlant le degré de réalisme et d'abstraction tout au long du continuum. Notre approche se fonde sur la nécessité d'adaptation locale de la symbolisation des données topographiques pour assurer la lisibilité de chaque représentation intermédiaire, la création de transitions graphiques pour établir une continuité entre ces représentations, et la synchronisation des symbolisations visant à garantir une homogénéité visuelle de ces représentations mixtes. Nous proposons une méthode de conception reposant sur la combinaison de briques de symbolisation élémentaires. Le premier type de brique consiste à interpoler les paramètres de symbolisation de la norme SLD tels que la couleur, la transparence ou la texture (procédurale, naturelle, ou mixée) entre deux symbolisations données. Le second type de brique analyse le contexte graphique des objets à mettre en valeur afin de déterminer localement une symbolisation adaptée et lisible. Ces briques sont combinées pour chaque thème et coordonnées entre les différents thèmes. Nous émettons des préconisations de paramétrage de ces étapes de conception à partir des résultats de notre test utilisateur visant à estimer le degré de réalisme et d'abstraction des symbolisations cartographiques. Enfin, nous mettons en œuvre cette méthode de conception au sein de la plateforme de recherche GeOxygene sous la forme d'un outil permettant de naviguer dans un continuum cartographique entre réalisme et abstraction
Two representations of the territory are widely provided simultaneously to the user through interactive tools (such as magnifiers, sliders or swipes): topographic maps and orthoimages. They provide complementary visions of the territory because of abstraction steps used to design maps and the intrisic perceived photorealism power of orthoimages. Aiming at providing efficient covisualizations of these two representations to the user, we advise not to search for an ideal graphic mix, but to produce a cartographic continuum composed of in-between representations mixing topographic data and orthoimagery. Our objective is to provide interactive tools allowing to choose an intermediate step within the continuum by controling the realism and abstraction levels. Our approach is based on three principles: first, the need for local adaptation of vector data symbolisation to preserve their readability, second, the call for graphic transitions to establish a continuity through in-between cartographic representations, and third the required control over realism level in order to ensure a visual consistency of hybrid visualisations. We provide elementary symbolisation methods to be combined in a global design process. The first one aims at interpolating SLD symbolisation parameters such as color, opacity or texturing between two symbolisations. The second one aims at defining a local symbolisation depending on the graphic context of objects to be highlighted. Those symbolisations are combined for each theme and synchronized for all themes. For these design steps, we provide guidelines based on the evaluation of the realism level coming from our user test. Finally we build a prototype software allowing to test our propositions and browse in-between representations from abstraction to realism through an interactive slider

K.U.Leuven University Library (Belgium) developed an experimental interface for subject search by UDC in the OPAC. The interface combines the search facilities of a classification with those of a word system, since it enables the end user to search by subject terms and to see these terms in the hierarchy of broader, parallel and more specific terms. This project should be seen as an important indication of the libraryâ s growing concern to present its information sources in a content-structured and user-friendly way. At the same time, it has to be situated in a new policy for knowledge organization, which aims to find a balance between the local and overall needs of a library network. Finally, this project comes at a moment when K.U.Leuven University Library is in full conversion to Aleph 500 software.

Recent years have shown a broad spectra of tangible interfaces or TUI's, based upon interaction with music, but also other interfaces containing ubiquitous computing. This is an interesting field due to how engaging music can be and work as connector between people. But the field of human computer interaction has some explorational properties. This paper presents an idea of abstraction with a tangible interface for creating music. The idea behind abstraction of the interface is to engage the user(s) in exploring the artifact, rather than explaining the artifact to the user what can and cannot be done with the artifact.

La rationalisation des processus chimiques élémentaires aux surfacesest d'intérêt primordial pour de nombreux phénomènes naturels ou d'intérêttechnologique. D'un point de vue fondamental, la façon dont l'énergie, concomitanteà toute réaction chimique, est distribuée parmi les degrés de liberté des moléculesformées et/ou transférée à la surface est loin d'être systématisée. Dans ce travail,des simulations, reposant sur la méthode des trajectoires quasi-classiques (QCT),sont réalisées pour examiner cette problématique lors de recombinaisons demolécules d'hydrogène (H2) et d'azote (N2) résultant de l'abstraction d'atomesadsorbés via collision par un atome provenant de la phase gazeuse sur des surfacesde Tungstène - W(100) et W(110) - à taux de couverture non nul. Ces processussont ici étudiés pour leur intérêt en physique des interactions plasma-paroi. Dessurfaces d'énergie potentielle, construites à partir de calculs de structure électroniquebasés sur la théorie de la fonctionnelle densité (DFT), sont utilisées pour simuler,dans le cadre de la mécanique classique - incluant les corrections semi-classiquespertinentes - les processus ultrarapides dit de "Eley-Rideal" et par "atomes-chauds"(sub-picoseconde). La mise en place de modèle effectifs, pour tenir compte de ladissipation de l'énergie aux phonons de la surface et aux excitations électroniques(paires électron-trou), permet de rationaliser la dynamique non-adiabatique del'abstraction atomique aux surfaces métalliques
The rationalization of elementary processes at surfaces is of prime importance for numerous natural and technological areas. From a fundamental pointof view, the way the energy concomitant to any chemical reaction is distributed among the desorbing molecules degrees-of-freedom and the surface is far frombeing fully pictured. In this work, quasiclassical molecular dynamics (QCT)simulations have been carried out to investigate this issue for the recombination ofH2 and N2 resulting from atomic adsorbate abstraction by atom scattering off theW(100) and W(110) covered surfaces, these processes being of relevance inplasma-wall interactions. Potential energy surfaces, built from density functional(DFT) theory calculations, have been used to simulate, within the framework ofclassical dynamics (including semi-classical corrections), the subpicosecond Eley-Rideal and Hot-Atom processes. The implementation of effective models to accountfor energy dissipation to surface phonons and electron-hole pair excitations, have allowed to rationalize the non-adidabatic dynamics of atom abstraction at metalsurfaces

This project created a first step prototype interface for a document clustering search engine. The goal is to facilitate the needs of people with reading difficulties as well as being a useful tool for general users when trying to find relevant but easy to read documents. The hypothesis is that minimizing the amount of text and focus on graphical representation will make the service easier to use for all users. The interface was developed using previously established persona and evaluated by general users (i.e. not users with reading disabilities) in order to see if the interface was easy to use and to understand without tooltips and tutorials. The results showed that even though the participants understood the interface and found it intuitive, there was still some information they thought were missing, such as an explanation for the reading indexes and how they determined readability.

Practicing Motor Imagery (MI) with a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) has shown promise in promoting motor recovery in stroke patients. A BCI records a person’s brain activity and provides feedback to the person in real time, which allows the person to practice his or her brain activity. By imagining a movement (performing MI) such as gripping with their hand, cortical areas in the brain are activated that largely overlaps with those activated during the actual hand movement. A BCI can provide positive feedback when the hand-related cortical areas are activated during MI, which helps a person to learn how to perform MI. Despite evidence that stroke patients may recover some motor function from practicing MI with BCI feedback thanks to the feedback provided from a BCI, the effectiveness and reliability of BCI-based rehabilitation are still poor.  A BCI can detect MI by analyzing patterns of features from the brain activity. The most common features are extracted from the oscillatory activity in the brain.  In BCI research, MI is often treated as a static pattern of features, which is detected by using machine learning algorithms to assign activity into a binary state. However, this model of MI may be inaccurate. Analyzing brain activity as dynamically varying over time and with a continuous measure of strength could better represent the cortical activity related to MI.  In this Licentiate thesis, I explore a method for analyzing the temporal dynamic of MI-activity with a continuous measure of strength. Brain activity was recorded with electroencephalography (EEG) and subject-specific feature patterns were extracted from a group of healthy subjects while they performed MI of two opposing hand movements: opening and closing the hand. Although MI of the two same-hand movements could not be discriminated, the continuous output from a machine learning algorithm was shown to correlate well with MI-related feature patterns. The temporal analysis also revealed that MI is dynamically encoded early, but later stabilizes into a more static pattern of brain activity. Last, to accommodate for higher temporal resolution of MI, I designed and evaluated a BCI framework by its feedback delay and uncertainty as a function of the stress on the system and found a non-linear correlation. These results could be essential for developing a BCI with time-critical feedback. To summarize, in this Licentiate thesis I propose a promising method for analyzing and extracting a temporal representation of MI, enabling relevant and continuous neurofeedback which may contribute to clinical advances in BCI-based stroke rehabilitation.

La visualisation interactive est un outil essentiel pour l'exploration, la compréhension et l'analyse de données. L'exploration interactive efficace de jeux de données grands ou complexes présente cependant deux difficultés fondamentales. La première est visuelle et concerne les limitations de la perception et cognition humaine, ainsi que celles des écrans. La seconde est computationnelle et concerne les limitations de capacité mémoire ou de traitement des machines standards. Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons aux techniques de passage à l'échelle relativement à ces deux difficultés, pour plusieurs contextes d'application.Pour le passage à l'échelle visuelle, nous présentons une approche versatile de mise en évidence de sous-ensembles d'éléments par déformation spatiale appliquée aux vues multiples et une représentation abstraite et multi-/échelle de coordonnées parallèles. Sur les vues multiples, la déformation spatiale vise à remédier à la diminution de l'efficacité de la surbrillance lorsque les éléments graphiques sont de taille réduite. Sur les coordonnées parallèles, l'abstraction multi-échelle consiste à simplifier la représentation tout en permettant d'accéder interactivement au détail des données, en les pré-agrégeant à plusieurs niveaux de détail.Pour le passage à l'échelle computationnelle, nous étudions des approches de pré-calcul et de calcul à la volée sur des infrastructures distribuées permettant l'exploration de jeux de données de plus d'un milliard d'éléments en temps interactif. Nous présentons un système pour l'exploration de données multi-dimensionnelles dont les interactions et l'abstraction respectent un budget en nombre d'éléments graphiques qui, en retour, fournit une borne théorique sur les latences d'interactions dues au transfert réseau entre client et serveur. Interactive visualization is helpful for exploring, understanding, and analyzing data. However, increasingly large and complex data challenges the efficiency of visualization systems, both visually and computationally. The visual challenge stems from human perceptual and cognitive limitations as well as screen space limitations while the computational challenge stems from the processing and memory limitations of standard computers.In this thesis, we present techniques addressing the two scalability issues for several interactive visualization applications.To address visual scalability requirements, we present a versatile spatial-distortion approach for linked emphasis on multiple views and an abstract and multi-scale representation based on parallel coordinates. Spatial distortion aims at alleviating the weakened emphasis effect of highlighting when applied to small-sized visual elements. Multiscale abstraction simplifies the representation while providing detail on demand by pre-aggregating data at several levels of detail.To address computational scalability requirements and scale data processing to billions of items in interactive times, we use pre-computation and real-time computation on a remote distributed infrastructure. We present a system for multi-/dimensional data exploration in which the interactions and abstract representation comply with a visual item budget and in return provides a guarantee on network-related interaction latencies. With the same goal, we compared several geometric reduction strategies for the reconstruction of density maps of large-scale point sets

Industrial control systems (ICS) play an extremely important role in the world around us. They have helped in reducing human effort and contributed to automation of processes in oil refining, power generation, food and beverage and production lines. With advancement in technology, embedded platforms have emerged as ideal platforms for implementation of such ICSes. Traditional approaches in ICS design involve switching from a model or modeling environment directly to a real-world implementation. Errors have the potential to go unnoticed in the modeling environment and have a tendency to affect real control systems. Current models for error identification are complex and affect the design process of ICS appreciably. This thesis adds an additional layer to ICS design: an Interface Abstraction Process (IAP). IAP helps in incremental migration from a modeling environment to a real physical environment by supporting intermediate design versions. Implementation of the IAP is simple and independent of control system complexity. Early error identification is possible since intermediate versions are supported. Existing control system designs can be modified minimally to facilitate the addition of an extra layer. The overhead of adding the IAP is measured and analysed. With early validation, actual behavior of the ICS in the real physical setting matches the expected behavior in the modeling environment. This approach to ICS design adds a significant amount of latency to existing ICSes without affecting the design process significantly. Since the IAP helps in early design validation, it can be removed before deployment in the real-world.

This research looks at both subjective and objective ways of mediating our experience of the natural world through art and concludes that both approaches are of value. It considers art (and in particular abstract art) as a language, or text, to be read and interpreted objectively as well as a means of subjective, poetic expression. It explores the possibility that colour (as a medium that is both relative and at the same time subjective) may provide a useful link between a subjective and objective perception of t.De..,natural world. IV .•• It demonstrates that the theories and practice of abstraction, language and colour are intertwined. It proposes that phenomenology, and especially the work of Merleau-Ponty, links these areas of cultural thought and activity; and that the practical, ethical and embodied expression of this philosophy can be represented through walking, expressed as a physical activity and mediated through art. Practically, the research was developed in the studio and tracked through a series of written chapters written one at a time over a period of six years. A contextual overview has been added at the end of each chapter. These were written after the last chapter (chapter ten) was completed, and constructed within the space of a couple of months. This overlapping of time frames serves to highlight the Bricolage methodology used throughout the PhD. This approach, first proposed by Levis Strauss (The Savage Mind, 1962) 'acknowledges that research takes place in the real world - is complex and sometimes 'messy', open to change, interaction and development' (Gray and Malins, 2004). The written content of the PhD is presented alongside an exhibition of work in the Reg Vardy Gallery in Sunderland, demonstrating the link between theory and practice that the methodology employed highlights. The REpresentation and MAintenance of Process knowledge (REMAP) model provides support to various stakeholders involved in software projects by capturing the history of design decisions. This knowledge can assist the Department of Defense (DoD) in driving down the development and maintenance costs of large scale software systems. It is extremely important to have user friendly mechanisms to aid in the use of the REMAP model. This thesis implements a graphical user interface (GUI) under X11 Windows using the Andrew Toolkit. This implementation facilitates the instantiation, incremental modification, and ad-hoc querying of REMAP model primitives.

This thesis provides a numerical algorithm to solve fluid-structure interaction problems in the Cartesian grid. Unlike the typical Immersed Interfaced Method (IIM), we define thin non-stretchable solid interface with the Level Set function. In addition, we developed a partial differential equation which represents the bending rigidity of the interface. The interface is assumed very thin and has zero elastic stress when it is flat. The interface gives singular forces to the incompressible viscous fluid and the fluid solver handles discontinuities across the interface. Instead of solving two dynamic systems (i.e., fluid and solid), we solve the fluid field only and solve a convection equation of interface with the local fluid velocity. This idea is valid because of viscous fluid (i.e., velocity is continuous across the interface) as we can see frequently in the IIM. The result shows that elastic interface vibrates and converges to an equilibrium state. The oscillatory motion of the interface depends on the viscosity of fluid, Young's modulus and thickness of interface. The results looks correct physically, and they match with the existing IIM results.

The thesis presents a user interface design aimed at the scenario where a dual representation of a volume is desired in order to emphasize certain parts of a volume using surface graphics while the rest of the volume is rendered using direct volume rendering techniques. A typical situation in which this configuration can prove useful is when studying images acquired for medical purposes. Sometimes the user wants to identify and represent an organ using an opaque surface in an otherwise partly opaque visualization of the volume data set. The design is based on the visualization library VTK along with Trolltech Qt, a GUI Toolkit in C++. The choice of using VTK as a visualization library was made after evaluating similar systems. The report includes a state of the art chapter, the requirements for the system, the system design and the results achieved after implementing the design are shown.

People began to interact with their own environment since their birth. Their main organs to sense their surroundings are their hands, and this is the most natural way of interaction in human-human interactions. The goal of this dissertation is to enable users to employ their hands in interaction with computers similar to human-human interaction. Using hands in the computer interaction increases both the naturalness of computer usage and the speed of interaction. One way of accomplishing this goal is to utilize computer vision methods to develop hand interfaces. In this study, a regular, low-cost camera is used for image acquisition, and the images from camera are processed by our novel vision system to detect user intention. The contributions are (i) a method for interacting with a screen without touching in a distributed computer system is proposed, (ii) a benchmark of four hand shape representation methods is performed using a comprehensive hand shape video database, and (iii) a vison-based hand interface is designed for an application that queries a video database system, and its usability and performances are also assessed by a group of test users to determine its suitability for the application.

The thesis explores human embodiment in 3D Virtual environments as a means of enhancing interaction. I aim to provide a better understanding of embodied interaction in digital environments in general. 3D interactive virtual environments challenge users to question aspects of their embodiment by providing new modes for interacting with space. Designers are facing new challenges that require novel means of interacting with virtual environments that do not simply mirror the way we interact within physical environments. Much of the research in the field aims to show how such environments can be made more familiar and "realistic" to users. This thesis attempts to probe the unfamiliar aspects of the medium. In this thesis I explore the concept, image and object of intimate space. How can an understanding of intimate space inform embodied interaction with virtual environments? I also investigate the role of familiarity by analysing and testing it in two contrasting interactive virtual environments. My contribution is to provide an account of familiarity as the driver behind embodied interaction in virtual environments based on human experience (from a phenomenological standpoint). In order to enhance the process of design for human embodied interaction in 3D virtual environments or in physical environments, I will identify tangible and intangible elements that affect human embodiment in 3D virtual environments and space, such as ethics and scale. Both examples are explored in interactive 3D virtual environments corresponding to real physical environments by subjects who are the daily users of the real physical environments. The thesis presents scale as a tangible element and ethics as an intangible element of human embodied interaction in space in order to highlight the different aspects that affect human engagement with space, and therefore human perception of their space and their embodiment. The Subjects’ accounts contribute toward informing the design of interactive 3D virtual environments within the context of embodied interaction.

User system interface guidelines are emerging as a tool for user interface design. However, guidelines are relatively new, and the effectiveness of guidelines in their present form is still being debated. Some designers of USI tools are attempting to place guidelines online in browsing systems, often as a part of automated USI design tools. This thesis studies the role levels of abstraction has on the detection of USI guidelines violations in user interface evaluation. Studies of online guidance systems, such as help manuals, have yielded mixed results in comparing performance when using online systems versus hardcopy manuals. This thesis also explores the effect which guideline presentation media has upon guidelines usage.

The purpose of this study is to explore the representation of national political freedom on web interface design by using power distance, one of the culture dimensions identified by Geert Hofstede, as a measurement. This study also aims to determine if there are any differences between government-based websites and business-oriented websites in representing national political freedom. A pilot study was conducted to validate ten power distance indicators identified from previous research on cultural dimensions with the intent of establishing a measurement for determining a country's national political freedom on web content and interface design. The result showed that six out of ten proposed indicators are valid power distance indicators. The seventh indicator, symmetric layout, demonstrated that its Web representation correlates with national political freedom level. Consequently, the principal research applied these seven indicators in coding 312 websites selected from 39 countries and analyzed national political freedom represented on these websites with content analysis method. The result of two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that large differences exist in web interface design, which in turn reflects the aforementioned national political freedom. The research showed that the mean effect of freedom level between free-country group, partly-free-country group and not-free-country group was statistically significant (p = .003). So was the mean effect of website type between government-based and business-oriented websites (p = .000). Furthermore, the interaction between the freedom level and website type was also significant (p = .041). Therefore, we conclude that web interface design represents a country's political freedom and government-based websites embody more of a nation's authority and supremacy than business-oriented websites do. It is expected that this study furthers our exploration in culture dimensions on web interface design and advances our knowledge in sociological and cultural studies of the web.

Network reconstruction is the process of recovering a unique structured representation of some dynamic system using input-output data and some additional knowledge about the structure of the system. Many network reconstruction algorithms have been proposed in recent years, most dealing with the reconstruction of strictly proper networks (i.e., networks that require delays in all dynamics between measured variables). However, no reconstruction technique presently exists capable of recovering both the structure and dynamics of networks where links are proper (delays in dynamics are not required) and not necessarily strictly proper.The ultimate objective of this dissertation is to develop algorithms capable of reconstructing proper networks, and this objective will be addressed in three parts. The first part lays the foundation for the theory of mathematical representations of proper networks, including an exposition on when such networks are well-posed (i.e., physically realizable). The second part studies the notions of abstractions of a network, which are other networks that preserve certain properties of the original network but contain less structural information. As such, abstractions require less a priori information to reconstruct from data than the original network, which allows previously-unsolvable problems to become solvable. The third part addresses our original objective and presents reconstruction algorithms to recover proper networks in both the time domain and in the frequency domain.

Depuis la révolution cogniviste des années 50, le paradigme cognitiviste a été accepté par la grande majorité des chercheurs, en particulier dans le domaine de la mémoire. Le connexionnisme est venu remettre en cause son organisation modulariste en mettant en avant son caractère émergent. Cependant, la question de la référence restait posée en ce sens qu'elle reposait sur l'existence de représentations internes d'un monde externe au sujet. Le paradigme énactiviste qui reprend les principes du constructivisme propose que la cognition ne soit plus considérée comme la représentation d'un monde préexistant mais comme le produit de nos expériences sensori-motrices. Dans ce travail, nous présentons ATHENA : un modèle de mémoire énactiviste sans représentations inspiré de MINERVA2 mais prenant en compte les apports du modèle Act-In. La mémoire se construit ici par une contextualisation fractale des covariances sensorimotrices. Une série de simulations expérimentales nous permet de rendre compte de nombreux phénomènes mnésiques de manière plus efficace que ce que permet le représentationnalisme : l'émergence, l'apprentissage et manipulation d'abstractions sans représentations ; mais aussi d'autres phénomène cognitifs tels que la construction temporelle subjective (sans représentations temporelles apprises)
Since the cognitive revolution of the 1950s, the cognitive paradigm has been accepted by the great majority of researchers, especially in the domain of memory. Connectionism has come to question its modular organization by emphasizing its emergent character. However, the question of reference remained posed in the sense it was based on the existence of internal representations of a world external to the subject. The enactivist paradigm, that takes up the principles of constructivism, proposes that cognition should no longer be seen as the representation of a pre-existing world but as the product of our sensorimotor experiences. In this work, we present ATHENA: an enactivist model of memory without representations inspired by MINERVA2, but taking into account the contributions of the Act-In model. Memory is built by a fractal contextualization of sensorimotor covariances. A series of experimental simulations allows us to account for many memory phenomena in a more effective way than what is possible within representationalism: the emergence, learning and manipulation of abstractions without representations; but also other cognitive phenomena such as a subjective time construction (without temporal representations learned)

Research has shown that fine-grained consonantal phonetic information can be gradiently integrated during spoken word recognition in the L1. However, the way listeners categorize vocalic phonetic information has not been investigated as thoroughly. Furthermore, second language (L2) listeners’ processing of fine-grained information is not as well known as L1 processing. L1 Canadian French (CF) listeners and L2 listeners (native English) were tested in an eye tracking paradigm with words containing partially nasalized (CVN) and fully nasal (CṼ) vowels. Stimuli were designed to have variable nasalization duration on the vowel, and sometimes include a short nasal consonant word-finally. The main goals were to determine how nasalization duration influences word recognition in an L1 and an L2, and if variations in phonetic details are gradiently or categorically integrated. Results show that L1 listeners gradiently were able to identify the stimuli when they contained mismatching phonetic cues, while L2 listeners display more categorical patterns of recognition. When stimuli do not have conflicting phonetic cues, L1 listeners mostly identify words as CṼ, except when the vowel is not nasalized. For L2 listeners, the pattern was similar, but the rate of stimuli identification as phonological nasal (CṼ) was lower due to L1 transfer. These results support the hypothesis that L1 listeners have phonological representations that include fine-grained phonetic information and that they consider it when recognizing words. On the other hand, L2 listeners who have less experience in the L2 display more categorical recognition patterns, probably because their representations include coarser phonetic information or because they cannot access fine-grained representations, given the cognitive demands of L2 processing. When words do not contain conflicting phonetic cues, patterns of recognition of both L1 and L2 listeners seem more categorical, even though L2 listeners displayed lower rates of identification than L1 listeners overall. This uncertainty can also be due to less detailed phonological representations or to their inability to access all the necessary information to recognize words. Overall, these results suggest that fine-grained phonetic information gradiently impacts word recognition, that it is part of phono-lexical representations, and that L2 processing is qualitatively and quantitatively different from L1 processing.

At the point of sale in retail businesses, employees are a problem. A problem comprised of high turnover, unmet consumer expectations and lost sales, among other things. One of the traditional strategies used by human resource departments to cope with employee behavior, or "misbehavior," has been to strictly script employee/customer interactions. Another, more recent approach, has been the development of systems to replace the human worker; in other words, to effect transactions directly between customers and an information system. In these systems one determinant of public acceptance may be the system's affect, whether that affect is "human-like" or takes some other form. Human-like affect can be portrayed by the use of multimedia presentation and interaction techniques to depict "employees" in familiar settings, as well as incorporating elements of human exchange (i.e., having the system use the customer's name in dialogs). The field of Human-Computer Interaction, which informs design decisions for such multimedia systems, is still evolving, and research on the application of multimedia to User Interfaces for automated transaction processing of this type is just beginning. This dissertation investigates two dimensions of User Interface design that bear on the issues of emulating "natural human" transactions by using a laboratory experiment employing a 2 x 2 factorial design. The first dimension investigated is personalization. Personalization is a theoretical construct derived from social role theory and applied in marketing. It is, briefly, the inclusion of scripted dialog crafted to make the customer feel a transaction is personalized. In addition to using the customer's name, scripts might call for ending a transaction with the ubiquitous "Have a nice day!" The second dimension investigated is the "richness" of representation of the UI. Richness is here defined as the degree of realism of visual presentation in the interface and bears on the concept of direct manipulation. An object's richness could vary from a text based description of the object to a full motion movie depicting the object. The design implications of the presence or absence of personalization at varying levels of richness in a prototype UI simulating a fast food ordering system are investigated. The results are presented.

This research aims at analyzing Social Representations about the teaching of future educators of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Caicó) in early childhood education. We assumed that teaching in early childhood education, in a problematical conception, is the commitment to freedom of educators and students, subjects of educational practice, based on knowing act that stimulates critical thinking, creativity, reflection and action upon reality. Thus, we reflect on the policies formulated concerning early childhood education and teacher training in the current context. Using the Theory of Social Representations formulated by Moscovici, we investigate the importance of training processes in the Social Representations of future educators, analyzing the CNE/CP 1, May 15, 2006. 118 undergraduate students who were in the first, third, fifth, seventh and ninth semesters of the Pedagogy Course participated in this research. First, we used a questionnaire of Free Association of Words in which was evoked, in order of importance, the stimulus in teaching in early childhood education, and secondly, through a semi structured interview, we analyzed the expectations of the students for the Pedagogy Course and which elements they considered relevant to the training of teachers of early childhood education. To process the data the software EVOC and ALCESTE was used. The results of this research lead us to reflect on the knowledge that constitutes the teaching practice no matter they are based on experience, science, ethics, political or sociocultural terms. The Social Representations of future teachers about teaching in early childhood education refers to the commitment to the education of young children and also to the teacher education itself, besides showing the romantic vision of teaching. The implications for the initial teacher training that appear in the Social Representations of the Pedagogy students of UFRN/CERES consist of the ability to develop and implement public policies that make commitments with the formation of the citizen child, recognizing their specificities; valuing recreation as science, comprising interfaces for children's development and establishing teaching as a profession. Prospective teachers assume the responsibility and commitment to the education of children, emphasizing the aspects of morality and education, besides patience and dedication. They also recognize the need to link playing, caring and education, even though among trainees, recognition of theory in educational practice has not been evidenced. We propose to the teacher training policies a partnership between universities and early childhood education institutions that may provide opportunities for future teachers to participate in the political-pedagogical project of the Pedagogy Course. Finally, we hope this study will contribute to the construction of knowledge and reflection of teacher education, especially concerning early childhood education, which considers children‟s education an essential point for their total development. This work contributed to new researches concerning teaching in early childhood education and its role in the teaching-learning process, providing total children development in the full sense of childhood.
Esta pesquisa teve como principal objetivo analisar as Representações Sociais sobre a docência na educação infantil dos futuros pedagogos da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte em Caicó. Partimos do pressuposto de que a docência na educação infantil, numa concepção problematizadora, consiste no compromisso com a liberdade de educadores e educandos, sujeitos da prática educativa, fundamentada no ato cognoscente que estimula a crítica, a criatividade, a reflexão e ação sobre a realidade. Assim, refletimos sobre as políticas formuladas concernentes à educação infantil e a formação docente no contexto atual. A partir da Teoria das Representações Sociais de Moscovici, investigamos a importância dos processos de formação nas RS dos futuros pedagogos, analisando a Resolução CNE/CP Nº 1, de 15 de maio de 2006. Participaram da pesquisa 118 alunos do Curso de Pedagogia matriculados nos primeiro, terceiro, quinto, sétimo e nono períodos. Primeiramente, realizamos o questionário de Associação Livre de Palavras em que foi evocado, por ordem de importância, o estímulo docência na educação infantil e, posteriormente através de uma entrevista semiestruturada, analisamos as perspectivas dos alunos em relação ao curso de Pedagogia e quais elementos consideravam relevantes para a formação do professor de educação infantil. Para o tratamento dos dados, utilizamos o software EVOC e ALCESTE. Os resultados desta pesquisa nos remete a refletir sobre os saberes que constituem a prática docente, sejam eles baseados na experiência, científicos, éticos, políticos e socioculturais. As RS dos futuros professores sobre a docência na educação infantil se referem ao compromisso com a educação das crianças pequenas e à própria formação docente, além de evidenciar a visão romântica de docência. As implicações para a formação inicial docente que aparecem nas RS dos alunos de Pedagogia da UFRN/CERES consistem na possibilidade de elaborar e implementar políticas públicas que assumam compromissos com a formação da criança cidadã, reconhecendo as suas especificidades; valorizando o lúdico como ciência, compreendendo suas interfaces para o desenvolvimento da criança e estabelecendo o trabalho docente como profissão. Os futuros professores assumem o compromisso e a responsabilidade com a educação das crianças, valorizando os aspectos da moralidade e da instrução, além da paciência e dedicação. Reconhecem também a necessidade de articular o brincar, o cuidar e o educar, embora entre os formandos não tenha sido evidenciado o reconhecimento da teoria na prática educativa. Propomos para as políticas públicas de formação docente a parceria universidade e instituições de educação infantil, oportunizando aos futuros professores a participação no projeto político pedagógico do curso de pedagogia. Por fim, esperamos que esse estudo possa contribuir para a construção do conhecimento e reflexão da formação docente, em especial da Educação Infantil, que tem o cuidado e a educação das crianças como funções essenciais para o seu desenvolvimento integral. Este trabalho fomentou novas pesquisas concernentes à docência na educação infantil e o seu papel no processo de ensino e aprendizagem, proporcionando o desenvolvimento integral da criança no pleno sentido da infância.
