Direct bonding is used for many applications in microelectronics (SOI Silicon-On-Insulator technology, imager back side illumination technology, 3D technology...). It is a processes that consists in an assembly of two surfaces without any adhesive material. It is primarily used to bond silicon wafers and it is complementary with other microelectronics technique such as epitaxy, thin film deposition... Bonding requires special wafer surface conditions and preparations. The surfaces have to be clean, flat and smooth to obtain a spontaneous adhesion at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. A heat treatment is applied to increase the adherence energy. During the manufacturing process, bonding defects may appear which are due to trapping of particles. These bonding defects are essentially formed of air. Finally, bonding defects and bonding energy are the two main characteristics from which is deduced the bonding quality.Nowadays, the main technique that is used to measure the direct bonding energy is the double cantilever beam (DCB). The method consists in firstly partially separating the two wafers by a blade, and secondly calculating the bonding energy from an equation that integrates the debonding lenght. The major disadvantage of this technique is its destructiveness. Furthermore it is only possible to make measurements on few points. Thus a non-destructive characterisation could be very interesting especially for an industrial in-line inspection. Moreover, having the possibility to obtain a mapping of the bonding energy could lead to interesting development. Up to know, no technique can reach the both requirements. The aim of this work is to use the acoustic microscopy to measure the direct bonding energy. In this study, a model based on "hybrid matrix method" has been developed to model bonding with different qualities. The results of the modelling show that the acoustic reflection coefficient of the bonded structure is influenced by the quality of the interface. From these results, an experimental method is proposed to perform quality of the interface measurements from the reflection coefficients acquired under normal incidence. In parallel, silicon wafers have been bonded to validate the method. Finally, once the method validated, two-dimensional mappings of the interface quality are realised.Secondly, the technique is improved to increase the lateral resolution. For this, a transducer having a lens is used to focus the ultrasonic waves on the bonded structure. A theoretical study is conducted using the model of the "angular spectrum" to simulate the diffraction lens. Finally, experimental mapping confirm the feasibility of measuring bonding energy of high resolutions

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution in the hybrid layer varying the adhesive system (total each and self-etching systems) using three-dimensional finite element analysis (FE). METHODS: 4 FE models (M) were developed in Solidworks 2007: Mc - representation of a specimen of dentin (41x41x82 μm) restored with composite resin (RC), showing the adhesive layer, hybrid layer (HL), TAGs, peri-tubular dentin, intertubular dentin in order to simulate simulating the HL according to the total-etch adhesive system; Mr - similar to Mc, with lateral branches of the adhesive; Ma - similar to Mc, without TAGs and showing the "smear plug" in order to simulate the environment for the self-ethcing adhesive system; Mat - similar to Ma, with TAGs. The models were considered isotropic, homogeneous and linearly elastic and numerical analysis was performed in ANSYS Workbench 10.0 to obtain the maximum principal stress (MAX) after application of a tension force of 0.03N perpendicular to the surface of the RC. The botton of all models was fixed in x, y and z axis. RESULTS: The highest MAX in HL was observed in the total etching system. The lateral branches increased the MAX in HL. The TAGs had a little influence on the stress distribution in self-ethching system. CONCLUSION: The HL for the total-etch system showed MAX higher in comparison with the self-etch system. The presence of TAGs increased the MAX in the HL for the total-etch system.

Abstract: Introduction: Although the self-etching adhesives are characterized by etching and infiltrating simultaneously the dentin, the presence of an altered dentin layer has been showed by literature, which might show specific mechanical behavior. Proposition: To evaluate through 3-D finite element analysis the influence of the partially altered dentin thickness on the micromechanical behavior of the self-etch adhesives. Materials and Methods: 5 micro-models (M) were developed for simulating the dentin/adhesive (d/a) interface (82x41x41 μm): M1-representation of the d/a interface based on 2 steps conventional adhesive system; M2-d/a interface based on 2 steps self-etch adhesive system M3, M4 and M5 - d/a interface based on all-in-one adhesive system, varying the thickness of the partially altered dentin (0, 1.5 and 3 μm, respectively). All the models were considered isotropic, homogeneous and lineally elastic. The bottom of all the models were constrained in the axes x, y and z. A tensile load (90o; 0.03N) was applied on the top of the composite resin. The numeric analysis was accomplished, being obtained the maximum principal stress ( max). Results: The pick of max (MPa) was found in M5 (79.5), followed by M4 (78.0) and M3 (70). The top of the resin tags was the most requested place in all models. Conclusion: The increase of the partially altered dentin thickness raised the max in the d/a interface; the absence of this layer contributed to the smallest tension concentration; the top of the tags showed higher stress concentration.

The cavities had a dimension of 3x2x1.8 mm3 and were made on amelo-cement junction on buccal and lingual of 80 human premolars (n=160). The used adhesive systems were Adper Single Bond 2, AdheSE, Adper Prompt LPop and One Coat 7.0. The used composite was Synergy® D6. The adhesive and photopolymerization (600 mW/cm2) proceedings were made conventionally and following the manufacturer recommendations. The specimens were divided in 4 groups (n=40) according to adhesive system used. Each group was divided in 4 subgroups (n=10) according to applycated stress (thermocycling, occlusal load cycling and thermocycling+occlusal load cycling). Each subgroup included 1 control group without stressing. The thermocycling was made using 500 cycles, with 5-55 C, dwell time of 15 seg and transfer time of 5 seg. The occlusal load cycling was made applying a force of 40-70 N during 50000 cycles with 2 Hz of frequency. Later, the specimens were impermeabilited and immersed in tracer agent of 50 % silver nitrate solution by 2 hours. Finally, the specimens were prepared for adhesive effectiveness evaluation through optic microscopy 40X (marginal microleakage occurrence) and scanning electronic microscopy 1000X (gaps formation). The tracer agent microleakage was measured qualitative (score) and quantitatively . The gap width was measured on 3 points of center of axial wall. The Kruskal-Wallis and post-hoc de Dunn, and ANOVA two-way and post-hoc Bonferroni tests were used on statistic analysis. Despite of few differences found in used adhesive system performance, the tendency could be observed to the increase of the marginal microleakage in the submitted groups specifically to thermocycling. On the other hand, the axial gaps formation presented progressively higher width in the submitted groups to thermocycling, occlusal load cycling and thermocycling+occlusal load cycling. It was concluded that the used adhesive system presented similar adhesive effectiveness when were submitted to thermal and mechanical stress.

Abstract: The lack of light-activation of dual-cured bonding agents before the resin cement application has been an alternative technique of cementing indirect restorations when dual-cured cementing systems are used (DCS ¿ dual-cured bonding agents / dual-cured resin cements). However, few reports exist regarding the effectiveness of DCS when dual-cured bonding agents are left in the uncured state before the seating of the indirect restoration. Therefore, the aims of this study were: 1- to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) and micromorphology of the adhesive interface of indirect restorations by confocal laser microscopy (CLSM) when the dual-cured bonding agents were left in the uncured state; 2- to analyze the degree of conversion (DC) by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy and the bond strength of indirect restorations when DCSs were applied to the tooth and light activated or allowed to self-cure; 3- to evaluate the DC and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of bonding agents light-activated with light curing units (LEDs and halogen light). The MTBS and UTS were analyzed using microtensile bond strength test. Different dyes were incorporated to the DCSs before they were applied to teeth for the CSLM analysis. For the DC analysis, the DSCs were applied to the diamond surface of attenuated total reflectance unit of the infrared device. The DC of the bonding agents related to the study evaluating the effectiveness of light-curing units was obtained from thin resin adhesive films. The results demonstrated that the MTBS was not affected, and the values were even higher for one 4th generation DCS, when the dual-bonding agents were left in the uncured state before the resin cement application. The CLSM analysis exhibited some variation in the micromorphological features, which depended on the DCSs and on the curing modes of bonding agents and resin cements. Some DCSs showed lower DC when pre-cured resin composite discs were used. The self-cured groups exhibited lower MTBS than the light-activated ones, except for one 4th generation DCS. The LED promoted lower DC in all bonding agents than did the halogen light. No difference in UTS was observed when LED was used. It was concluded that leaving the dual-cured bonding agent in the uncured state before seating the indirect restoration may be a reliable technique to ensure adequate MTBS, but most DCSs should be light-activated after seating the indirect restoration to provide optimal bond strength. Some LEDs can compromise the DC of adhesive systems

The objective of this study was to evaluate the microgap with different materials used for pulp protection. The null hypothesis tested in this in vitro study was that the combination among calcium hydroxide, resin-modified glass ionomer and dentin adhesive, used as pulp protection in composite restorations would not result in greater axial gap than that obtained by hybridization only. Standardized class V preparations were performed in buccal and lingual surfaces of sixty caries-free extracted human third molars. The prepared teeth were randomly assessed in 6 groups: (1) Single Bond-SB, 3M ESPE; (2) Life-LF, Kerr Co.+ SB; (3) LF+Vitrebond-VT, 3M ESPE +SB; (4) VT+SB; (5) SB+VT; (6) SB+VT+SB; and restored with a microhybrid composite resin Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE), following the manufacturer's instructions. Except for group 5 and 6, which the ethanol- and water-based adhesive were applied prior the resin-modified glass ionomer. The specimens were then cross-sectioned with a thickness of 800 æm, fixed, dehydrated in ascending ethanol, and dried by means HMDS. The specimens were mounted in stubs, sputter coated and the internal adaptation of the materials to the axial wall analyzed under SEM with 1,000x magnification. The data obtained were analyzed with nonparametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis, p<0.05). The null hypothesis was rejected. Calcium hydroxide and resin-modified glass ionomer applied alone or in conjunction (p<0.001), under composite resin restoration, resulted in statistically wider micro gaps than when the dentin was only hybridized prior the restoration. Dentin hybridization provides superior sealing of the dentin and restoration interface than other pulp protection materials.

The aim of this study was to assess the bond strength at the adhesive interface of fiber glass posts and root dentin, in three regions of the canal, fixed with three cementation systems. Twenty-four healthy human teeth, recently extracted for orthodontic or periodontal reasons, had their crowns removed at the cement-enamel junction with a diamond disk, under irrigation. The roots were endodontically treated and were filled with gutta percha and an endodontic cement containing eugenol (Endofil). One week after endodontic treatment ended, the obstruction was removed at a mean depth of 9mm in the cervical region of the root. The posts (Reforpost Fibra de Vidro No. 3) were cemented in the canals prepared with one of the three fixation systems described as follows (n = 8): in group 1 the Single Bond 2/ RelyX ARC system was used; in group 2 the ED Primer/Panavia 21 system, and in group 3 RelyX Unicem cement was used. All the cements and adhesive systems were used in accordance with the manufacturersâ instructions. Afterwards, the roots were sectioned in a cutting machine under irrigation, into three portions corresponding to the cervical, middle and apical thirds of the root canal region prepared for the post. The specimens were submitted to the pushout test in a universal test machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min and the maximum bond strength values were recorded and submitted to statistical analysis (p < 0.05). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed statistically significant difference between the cervical, middle and apical thirds only for the Panavia 21 cement group, in which the apical third presented a lower mean bond strength value than the cervical and middle thirds (the TukeyÂs test). When the bond strength in each region of the root was compared to assess the cementing materials, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed statistically significant different for the three regions of the canal. For the middle and apical thirds, the Panavia 21 cement presented significantly lower mean bond strength than the Single Bond 2/RelyX ARC and RelyX Unicem cements, these being statistically equal between them. For the cervical third, RelyX Unicem cement presented higher bond strength values than the Panavia 21 cement and the Single Bond 2/RelyX ARC cement was statistically equal to the other two materials

The aim of this study was to assess the hardness and elastic modulus of resin-dentin bonding area formed by an ethanol/water-based (Adper TM Single Bond 2 [SB]) and an acetone-based system (One Step Plus [OS]), under different moisture conditions and application methods. On 24 human molars, a flat superficial dentin surface was exposed by wet abrasion. Two coats of SB or OS adhesive were applied on either a dry (D) or rewetted surface (W), under active (AA) or inactive (IA) application. After polymerization of the adhesives (600 mW/cm2/20 s), composite build-ups were constructed incrementally and specimens were stored in water (24 h). They were cross-sectioned perpendicular to the resin-dentin interface to obtain slices of 1.5 mm thickness that were embedded and polished before the test. Nanoindentations were made on composite resin, adhesive system, hybrid layer and dentin regions. The results of hardness and elastic modulus (GPa) of adhesive system and hybrid layer were analyzed by a three-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison tests (α=0.05). The mean and standard deviation of hardness and elastic modulus values of composite resin were (1.02 ± 0.07) and (14.94 ± 0.67) respectively. In dentin, the hardness was (0.69 ± 0.10) and the elastic modulus (17.94 ± 1.84). In the adhesive layer, the highest hardness (0.38 ± 0.06) and elastic modulus (6.93 ± 0.93) of SB were obtained in W group. In this same area, the elastic modulus of OS (5.91 ± 1.12) was lowest in AA group. In the hybrid layer, the hardness of both adhesive systems was highest in AA group, however statistically significant just for OS (0.51 ± 0.2). In D group the highest hardness (0.47 ± 0.24) and elastic modulus (10.98 ± 4.65) of hybrid layer were obtained with AA. It was concluded that the active application of both adhesives in dry dentin resulted in higher hardness and elastic modulus values in the hybrid layer and the moisture increased hardness and elastic modulus values of Adper TM Single Bond 2 in the adhesive layer.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution in the hybrid layer varying the adhesive system (total each and self-etching systems) using three-dimensional finite element analysis (FE). METHODS: 4 FE models (M) were developed in Solidworks 2007: Mc - representation of a specimen of dentin (41x41x82 μm) restored with composite resin (RC), showing the adhesive layer, hybrid layer (HL), TAGs, peri-tubular dentin, intertubular dentin in order to simulate simulating the HL according to the total-etch adhesive system; Mr - similar to Mc, with lateral branches of the adhesive; Ma – similar to Mc, without TAGs and showing the smear plug in order to simulate the environment for the self-ethcing adhesive system; Mat – similar to Ma, with TAGs.

The continuity of this connection is harmed by a several factors from the re−starting of a casting (cold joint) to the recovery of deteriorated concrete structures. From this point of view this paper presents an analysis of the behavior of a repair system applied to the recovery of structures, new−to−old concrete bonding (amplification cases) and casting continuities. One of the most fragile points of a concrete structure is the interface zone, of both materials that compose it and the transition among the different concretes. Prismatic specimens executed with concretes (fck=15MPa, 18MPa, 21MPa, 25 MPa, 30 MPa, 40 MPa and 50 MPa), were used as substratum after a previous complete rupture through a flexural strength test for a further connection, with repair concrete as a bond link, and cylindrical specimens of conventional concretes presenting intentionally \"holes\". High−performance concretes with Portland cement CP V ARI RS (NBR 5733⁄NBR 5737 − ABNT), small quartz aggregates, basaltic coarse aggregates with Dmáx ≤ 6,3mm, silica fume (Fe−Si) additions of 5%, 10% and 15%, and normal setting superplasticizer with contents of 1,5%, 1,8% and 2,0% were used as repair system to improve the transition zone mentioned. Such materials were used after the specimens had been treated superficially and primed with High−performance Portland cement paste. The effectiveness of the connection is noticed mainly by the fact that in results of the flexural strength test of recovered prismatic specimens, the rupture occurred in almost 100% of the cases in the area of the old concrete. In axial compression tests with cylindrical specimens presenting recovered \"holes\", the rupture way demonstrated that the transfers of tensions usually occurred through the repair system, with no tension deviation, and there was a resistance increase in some cases.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the application and previous photoactivation of different adhesive systems on lithium dissilicate ceramics, with emphasis on the bond strength of cement-ceramic interface and the analysis of the mechanical properties (nanohardness and elastic modulus) of different adhesives systems and resin cement used. Forty-nine composite resin blocks (Z350XT A6B) and ceramic tablets (e.max CAD LT D3) which were divided into seven experimental groups (n = 7), according to the adhesive systems and photoactivation techniques of the materials inside the ceramic crown: Group 1: control (without adhesive system); Group 2: SBMP with no light-curing; Group 3: light-cured SBMP; Group 4: SB2 with no light-curing; Group 5: light-cured SB2; Group 6: SBU with no light-curing; Group 7: light-cured SBU. After the luting procedure with RelyX Ultimate, all specimens were submitted to thermocycling procedure (10,000 cycles). Sticks were then obtained for the analysis of microtensile bonding strength and nanohardness and elastic modulus of the resin componentes of the adhesive interface. Data were submitted to statistical analysis (ANOVA) and Fisher's test (α = 0.05). The results showed that the SBMP with no light-curing and SB2 with no light-curing groups had the lowest values of bonding strength, while the highest values of the mechanical properties were achieved for the light-cured SBMP group, showing that the bonding strength as well as the mechanical properties were influenced by the interaction of materials. For mechanical properties analyzed, the light-curing of the adhesive systems didn’t present a statistically significant diference in the comparison between groups. In general, the application of adhesive systems on the silanized ceramic surface showed needless. Among the adhesives studied, SBU was the only system that showed effectiveness with or without previous light activation. For the other adhesive systems, SBMP and SB2, the previous light activation was necessary to optimize the bonding strength of the adhesive interface.

The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of human saliva contamination on bond strength of the dentin/adhesive interface, morphology of the hybrid layer by confocal microscopy and SEM analysis and degree of conversion of 2 adhesive systems: Adper Single bond 2 (SB) and Single Bond® Universal ( SU). One hundred and eighty healthy human third teeth were divided into 12 groups (n = 10), according to the adhesive system used, the presence of saliva and the storage time. After the adhesive procedure and placement of resin composite (Filtek Z250), the teeth were stored in distilled waterat 37 ° C for 48 hours, 6 months or 12 months before being cut into sticks (0.8mm x 0.8mm, approximately) to the microtensile strength tests. For the analysis of the adhesive interface in confocal microscopy of laser scanning for verification and measurement of internal interface changes, 60 teeth were used divided into 6 groups (n = 10) according to the storage time: 48 hours, 6 months, and 12 monthsand (SB) and (SU). The effect of the presence of saliva was also evaluated by the degree of conversion of the adhesives using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy employing adhesive (SB) and (SU) systems incorporating human saliva in its composition (n = 5) with 10%, 25% and 50% vol. For the comparison of the variables: bond strength, degree of conversion, and hybrid layer thickness in the presence of saliva and storage time, the three criteria Variance Analysis and Tukey multiple comparisons tests (p <0.05) were used. The values of bond strength (MPa ± dp: 48hours / 6meses / year) were: SB (43.53 ± 6.0, 40.10 ± 3.4, 38.59 ± 5.4); SalSB (43.09 ± 6.2, 39.86 ± 6.6, 37.255.8); SU (42.98 ± 4.3, 39.30 ± 3.6, 40.44 ± 5.7); SU salt (44.39 ± 4.2, 42.26 ± 2.5, 38.26 ± 5.7). The mean values of hybrid layer thickness (MPa ± dp: 48hours / 6meses / year) were: SalSB (3.59 ± 0.8, 3.59 ± 1.0, 2.08 ± 1.5). SalSU (1.26 ± 0.5, 1.73 ± 0.8, 1.07 ± 0.3). The values of degree of conversion (MPa ± dp: 10% / 25% / 50% vol) were: SB (85.59 ± 3.4, 49.68 ± 12.8, 38.56 ± 11.8); (85.52 ± 3.3, 86.27 ± 3.5, 57.82 ± 11.1). It was therefore concluded that human saliva contamination did not interfere on bond strength of the dentin/adhesive interface after 48 hours, 6 months and 12 months. The morphology of the hybrid layer was altered by the presence of saliva after 6 and 12 months. The degree of conversion of adhesive systems was affected by the presence of saliva immediately after polymerization. However, the time factor was determinant for the dentine/resin interface deformation for both adhesive systems.

In the simulations, clay particles are typically represented by semi-infinite layers, i.e. only surfaces parallel to the layer plane (basal surfaces) are considered. This simplification is acceptable to a certain extent, but clay layers are really nanosized and terminated by lateral surfaces or edges. These surfaces can not only adsorb solvated species but are also subject to proton transfers, and all physico-chemical processes related to the aqueous phase acidity predominantly occur at the edges. By adding to the CLAYFF force field a Metal-O‑H angle bending term whose parameters are correctly adjusted, the simulations of edge interfaces become possible. The parameters of Al-O‑H and Mg-O‑H terms were obtained from DFT calculations on bulk, basal surface and edge structural models of gibbsite Al(OH)3 and brucite Mg(OH)2, whose layers can be considered as the backbones of clay minerals and related materials. In addition, the Si-O‑H term was parametrized from an edge model of kaolinite Al2Si2O5(OH)4 . Molecular dynamics simulations based on DFT and on CLAYFF with and without Metal-O‑H term were performed. The modified force field clearly improves the description of hydroxylated surfaces : the orientation and the librational dynamics of the hydroxyl groups, the hydrogen bonding, and the coordination of metal atoms belonging to the edge are all closer to reality

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cleaning protocol of dentin impregnated with epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus) and the effects on the adhesive interface using 95% ethanol (Rinse-N-Dry [RD]) or formamide solution (Endosolv R [ER]) associated with microabrasion with glass microparticles (Concepsis Scrub [Cs]) . Forty dentin specimens were impregnated with endodontic sealer (AH Plus). Specimens were cleansed according to the following protocols (n = 10): G1 (E), only RD; G2 (ER), only ER; G3 (E + Cs), RD and Cs; G4 (ER + Cs), ER and Cs. No treatment was performed in G5 (control). The specimens were subjected to SEM in order to evaluate the residues persistence (500x) and open dentinal tubules counting (2000x). Another 50 specimens were prepared, subjected to similar procedures and cleaning protocols.7 days later, composite-resin-made specimens were performed on dentin using etch-and-rinse adhesive system, then submitted to micro-shear test. G2 and G4 showed higher residues persistence and lower incidence of open dentinal tubules than G1 and G3 (P <0.05). No difference was found between G1 and G3 or G2 and G4 (P> 0.05). Adhesive system bond strength was similar in all groups (P> 0.05). Microabrasion negatively affected the cleaning protocols action, all groups presented residues on the dentin surface. However, 7 days later the protocols did not affect the bond strength of etch-and-rinse adhesive system to dentin previously impregnated with epoxy resin-based sealer.

Were used for this study, human canines teeth extracted for periodontal reasons. The crown was sectioned and root canals were prepared for fiber post-resin (Fibrekor). The teeth were randomly assigned into experimental groups (n = 10) when were varied the resin luting technique and term water storage. The resin cements were (1) Panavia F, (2) Variolink II, (3) Enforce mediated by their respective adhesives. Experimental groups, using Panavia F and Enforce, were prepared in the same way, except that the additional layer of a low-viscosity bonding resin (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus [SBMP]) was placed on the bonded root dentin surface before luting the fiber post-resin. The teeth were stored for 3 months and subsequently prepared for microtensile bond strength testing. Beams of approximately 1mm2 were tested in tension at 0,5mm/mim in a universal testing machine. Fractured surfaces were examined under X 40 stereomicroscope to determine the mode of fracture. The data were divided into cervical, middle and apical regions and analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey\'s test (p < 0,05). The results of tensile bonding strengths showed (1) significant differences among resin cements and root dentin regions, were presented higher mean bond strength values to Variolink II, when compared with others; (2) the cervical third of Variolink II demonstrated higher values, to Panavia F and Enforce demonstrated lower values for that regions; (3) the application of the additional layer of the hydrophobic adhesive resulted in significant improved in the tensile bonding strength; (4) water storage for 3 months produced bond strengths that were significant lower for Variolink II e Enforce; (5) after storage, the Variolink II reduced bond strengths in the cervical third and Enforce in the middle and apical regions. The cervical and middle third of Panavia F presented higher mean bond strength values and apical regions demonstrated lower values; (6) No cohesive fractures within resin cement, fiber-reinforced composite resin post, or root dentin were identified.

We have shown the interface is composed of several electronic defects, due to lattice deformations and residual contaminations, generating deep levels with recombinant properties. Finally, this study is focused on its electrical characterization and how to control its electrical activity. Hydrogenation and platinum diffusion are performed at Iow temperature and underline the possibility to restore the phosphorus biilk doping level. Therefore, an appropriate thermal treatment could be used to passivate a bonded interface without any bulk contamination

This process is used in several applications, particularly in terrestrial and spatial optics. Although a prototype passed with success spatial environment - where constraints involved are very different from those encountered on Earth - this technology requires a more detailed characterization and an improvement of the mechanical strength of bonded interfaces in order to validate the European Space Agency standards. To address this issue, mechanical tests (double shear tests, cleavage tests and wedge tests) and chemical analysis (wetting tests and XPS spectroscopy) were performed in order to study the influence of some process parameters (roughness, relative air humidity during room temperature bonding, the annealing temperature and time) on the mechanical strength and the bonding energy. These tests compared the two materials used: fused silica glass and Zerodur glass. As a result of these tests, optimal parameters doubling the mechanical strength were also obtained. In the same time, a phenomenological law relating the bonding energy to the previous parameters is developed as well as a macroscopic model to describe the adhesion intensity. Both models when coupled describe the normal behavior of the bonded interface depending on the process parameters. Then, the both laws are implemented in a finite elements model in order to simulate the crack propagation during the wedge test

There is a consensus that the resin-dentin bond instability is correlated with increased hydrophilic resin monomer content in dentin adhesive. Thus, more durable bonds could be created when more hydrophobic resins were used. One way to bond hydrophobic monomers to acid-etched dentin is saturating the demineralized dentin with ethanol instead of water (ethanol-wet bonding technique). The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of âalcohol wet bondingâ technique on the stability of adhesive interface produced by two-step etch-and-rinse adhesives systems. For this, it was used 20 human third molars that had superficial dentin exposed and were randomly divided into four experimental groups (n=5): Adper Single Bond 2 (SB) bonded to acid-etched dentin saturated with water or ethanol; and XP Bond (XP) bonded acid-etched dentin saturated with water or 99.5% tert-butanol. The simplified dentin dehydration protocol was performed using 2 μl 100% ethanol or 99.5% tert-butanol directly applied in dentin for 60 s. Composite build-ups were built on dentin surface and specimens were cut into non-trimming dentin-composite beams to microtensile testing. Beams from each tooth were divided equally in two subgroups: immediately tested and aged by immersion in 10% NaOCl solution for 1 h. Specimens were pulled until failure at crosshead speed of 1 mm/min and bond strength was calculated. Fractured sticks were analyzed and classified according to the failure mode as mixed, adhesive, cohesive in dentin and cohesive in composite; and expressed in percentage. Data from μTBS test were statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05). Additional dentin disks were bonded using the same groups tested and the morphological characteristics of adhesive interface were investigated by light microscopy after immersion in ammoniacal silver nitrate solution. μTBS results showed that NaOCl solution reduced significantly bond strength comparing with the control groups (p<0.05) and increased the silver nitrate interfacial deposit for all adhesives tested. SB used in ethanol saturated-dentin showed significant lower bond strength values in comparison with SB control group, and this same tendency was observed in the silver nitrate deposition. The use of tert-butanol did not influence XP bond strengths values and silver nitrate deposits. Conclusion: The âalcohol wet bondingâ simplified technique used in the present study was not able to improve resin-dentin bond stability for simplified etch-and-rinse adhesive systems.

The aim of this study was to evaluate bond strength of self-etching and total-etching adhesive systems to dentin of first and second primary molars and to analyze the adhesive interface under scanning electron microscopy. Dentin samples pulp distant 35% to 65% (intermediate dentin) were obtained from buccal and lingual surfaces at the middle third of the crown of 108 primary molars by sectioning with a diamond-impregnated disc under water cooling. Dentin surfaces were polished with 400 and 600-grit silicon carbide paper under running water. Five adhesive systems were tested on the first and second primary molar surfaces (n=15/group): Adper Single Bond; Prime & Bond NT; AdheSE; Clearfil SE Bond; Adper Prompt L-Pop. Inverted, truncated cones of resin composite (Filtek Z250) were built with a 2.0 mm bonding diameter. After 24-hour storage in distilled water at 37°C, the specimens were submited to the tensile test at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. To analyze adhesive interface 50 samples were prepared with the same protocol described above (n=5/group). No differences between first (16.02±5.23 MPa) and second (16.03±5.05 MPa) primary molars bond strength values could be observed (ANOVA:P=0.2721). Bond strength mean values registered in MPa obtained were 14.32±3.57 (Adper Single Bond), 15.65±3.70 (Prime & Bond NT), 19.47±7.09 (AdheSE), 17.14 ±5.35 (Clearfil SE Bond) and 14.22±3.20 (Adper Prompt L-Pop). AdheSE adhesive system presented the greatest bond strength values statistically different to the other groups (Tukey=3.47), while no statistically significant difference was observed for Clearfil SE Bond. In the other comparisons no differences were found. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed the presence of hybrid layer and tags in all adhesive systems on both dentin types

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate of nanohardness and elastic modulus of the adhesive interface and correlation with microtensile bond strength of dentin and composite after storage in water for 24 hours and six months. Eighty sound human third molars were randomly divided into four groups according to the adhesive system (Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose, Adper Single Bond 2, Clearfil SE Bond and Clearfil S3 Bond) and subdivided according the period of storage, 24 hours and six months (n = 10). From 10 teeth, three were selected for nanoindentation and seven for microtensile bond strength. The teeth were prepared to obtain flat dentin surfaces on which the adhesive systems were applied and cured according to the manufacturer's instructions. After adhesive application, the portion of composite was constructed incrementally and the restored teeth were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours and six months. The samples were obtained after these storage period. For microtensile bond strength restored teeth were sectioned to obtain specimens with sectional area of 1 mm2. For nanoindentation the restored teeth were sectioned to obtain slices with a thickness of 2 mm, subsequently embedded in epoxy resin and the exposed surface subjected to abrasion with sandpaper abrasive and polished with diamond slurry. Five nanoindentações were made on the adhesive layer, the hybrid layer and dentin, with a load of 1,000 ?N in trapezoidal cycle. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman correlation and ANOVA for two factors (adhesive system and storage time) for all study variables, followed by Tukey multiple comparisons (5%). The Spearman analysis showed significant correlation only for the elastic modulus of the adhesive layer to microtensile bond strength. The ANOVA showed no interaction between adhesive system and storage time, but isolated adhesive system factor showed a significant difference. The values of bond strength showed that Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose three-step conventional adhesive and Clearfil SE Bond two-step self-etching were statistically higher than Adper Single Bond 2 conventional two-step adhesives and Clearfil S3 Bond single step self-etching. The nanohardness and elastic modulus values of the hybrid layer and dentin were not statistically significant. Only for Adper Single Bond 2 adhesive layer the values are significant. The correlation analysis showed that there was only influence in the elastic modulus of the adhesive layer for the bond strength. In conclusion: storage for six months did not influence the values of nanohardness, elastic modulus and bond strength; there was no difference in the values of nanohardness and elastic modulus of dentin hybrid layer and to adhesives tested; there was no difference in the values of nanohardness and elastic modulus of the adhesive layer, and Adper Single Bond 2 showed values of nanohardness and elastic modulus higher than the other adhesives; Clearfil SE and Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose showed higher bond strength values than Adper Single Bond 2 and Clearfil S3 and the modulus of elasticity was inversely proportional to bond strength

Introduction: Although the self-etching adhesives are characterized by etching and infiltrating simultaneously the dentin, the presence of an altered dentin layer has been showed by literature, which might show specific mechanical behavior. Proposition: To evaluate through 3-D finite element analysis the influence of the partially altered dentin thickness on the micromechanical behavior of the self-etch adhesives. Materials and Methods: 5 micro-models (M) were developed for simulating the dentin/adhesive (d/a) interface (82x41x41 μm): M1-representation of the d/a interface based on 2 steps conventional adhesive system; M2-d/a interface based on 2 steps self-etch adhesive system M3, M4 and M5 – d/a interface based on all-in-one adhesive system, varying the thickness of the partially altered dentin (0, 1.5 and 3 μm, respectively).

Abstract: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the fast effect of the 10 % hypochrorite sodium storage in simulation to hydrolytic degradation and adhesive interface aged for long time, through to evaluate the bond strength of microtensile bond test. The 10% NaOCl solution used in short periods of time (hours) resulting in a significant decrease in bond strength in dentin after storage in that solution; however the mechanism of degradation generated by this solution is not totally understood, since sodium hypochlorite is a non-specific proteolytic agent, which could degrade not only the exposed collagen fibrils underneath the hybrid layer, but also the adhesive interface. For 2 adhesive systems avaliable commercially: one-bottle total-etch adhesive system Single Bond (SB) and primer self-etching adhesive system Clearfil SE Bond (SE). For this study, 80 ound bovine incisors, 40 for enamel and 40 for dentin, and 40 blocks building-up in composite resin, entirety 120 experimental units (n = 10). After sample restoration with resin composite Filtek Z250, the sample was storaged in distilled water at 37° C for 24 hours. For the microtensile bond test performance, the experimental units was sectioned into 1 mm² beams and 8 beams for each experimental unit was storaged in 10 % hypochrorite sodium (NaOCl) for 2 hours (Experimental groups) or in destilled water (H2O) for 24 hours (Control groups), entirety 960 beams observed. The failure pattern was observed in Scanning Electron Microscope (MEV) and photomicrographs was accomplished in 80X magnification for failure pattern classification and 1000X for details characterization of the more expressive areas for analysed surfaces. The means converted in MPa for the bond strength values were analysed by the Statistical Analysis (ANOVA) fatorial (3X2X2) and Tukey test for multiple comparison, both at level 5%. The means values for the microtensile test were: Enamel/NaOCl/SB = 29.3(4.0) a; Enamel/NaOCl/SE = 20.7(3.4) b; Enamel/H2O/SB = 31.2(5.0) a; Enamel/H2O/SE = 20.8(2.9) b; Dentin/NaOCl/SB = 13.5(1.6) c; Dentin/NaOCl/SE = 7.5(1.1) d; Dentin/H2O/SB = 34.9(3.4) a; Dentin/H2O/SE = 20.3(3.7) b; ResinComposite/NaOCl/SB = 24.1(7.0) b; ResinComposite/NaOCl/SE = 42.8(4.7) a; ResinComposite/H2O/SB =26.6(2.7) b; ResinComposite/H2O/SE = 41.3(3.5) a. The failure pattern was predominantly adhesive for the substrates enamel e resin composite, independently adhesive system utilized and, for dentin, the failure pattern for H2O storage was predominantly adhesive and for NaOCl storage was predominantly in degradation area. NaOCl storage showed a bigger degradation and desproteinization potencial significantly for the dentin substrate and the self-etching adhesive system tested showed smaller degradation susceptibility. This in vitro test proves to be effective in degrading just the collagen fibrils in dentin, this method might be very useful to predict the performance of the adhesive systems in clinics

The aim of this thesis is to develop NDT ultrasonic methods for the evaluation of the adhesion at interfaces in bonded joints. To address this problem, the assemblies are made of aluminum substrates (isotropic, elastic) and epoxy adhesive (isotropic, viscoelastic). Depending on the geometry of the studied assemblies, two methods are proposed to obtain quantitativeinformation on the adhesion level. The first method is suitable for three-layered plate-like samples. It consists in analyzingthe transmission of bulk ultrasonic plane waves through the assembly immersed in water. The consequences of a inapropriatesurface treatment of the substrates on the measurement of viscoelastic moduli of the joint are studied. It has been shown thatdegraded interphases cause an apparent anisotropy of the measured elastic moduli of the joint. This anisotropy was quantifiedusing two parameters β1 and β2 whose values can reveal the quality of the interphases. Then, the elastic moduli (or stiffnesseskL and kT) of the interphases were estimated, assuming that the adhesive layer properties are known. It was shown that theirvalues are higher when the adhesion is nominal, and are strongly decreased when the adhesion is degraded. Measurements ofthe mechanical strength, on samples prepared under the same conditions, confirmed the drops in these elastic moduli. Thesecond method is more suitable for lap joint samples. It is based on the Lamb wave transmission coefficient measured fromone substrate to the other, across the overlap zone. A numerical sensitivity analysis (finite element model) of the transmissioncoefficients of Lamb waves showed that the mechanical properties of the interphases (modeled by interfacial stiffnesses) canbe evaluated if the other characteristics of the assembly are well known. Experimental measurements of the transmissioncoefficients were then performed on two samples. One of them has interphases with nominal adhesion and the other hasdegraded interphases. A comparison between the measured results obtained for the different modes and numericalsimulations was used to determine the values of the interfacial stiffnesses for each sample. Again, it was observed that pooradhesion leads to low values of the interfacial stiffnesses of the interphases, that can be quantified using guided ultrasonicwaves

A new concept of compact plate heat exchanger is developed for the energy conversion system performances of the ASTRID reactor. Manufacturing the complex geometry is possible by a diffusion-welding process: engraved 316L stainless steel plates are stacked and bonded during a Hot Isostatic Pressing cycle (HIP). The problematic is to get strong interfaces without deforming the channels which is harmful for the exchanger efficiency. To reach a good compromise, this thesis work will help to optimize the HIP parameters (pressure/temperature/ time). The first line of work is about the simulation of the heat exchanger deformation along manufacturing process. The influence of numerical parameters (elements size, convergence criterion) was studied to optimize the accuracy and the calculation time. Simulations have shown the importance of structure stack faults (sliding and plate ripples) in the increase of exchanger deformation. Then, a mechanical characterisation of plates was carried out to identify the constitutive equation between 20°C and 1040°C.The second line is about the interface modelling along welding and the prediction of their mechanical strength, as a whole can lead to the definition of an interface acceptability criterion. A microstructural and mechanical study has enabled to correlate the mechanical strength of a diffusion-bonded junction and its bonded area. Indeed, residual porosity disappearance is the main criterion to get good interfaces mechanical strength. However, the grain boundary migration is required to reach the rolled material properties. A void closure analytical model (Hill and Wallach) was used to estimate the bonded area of an interface according to HIP cycle parameters by modelling the contribution of (visco)plastic and diffusion (surface and boundary) mechanisms. Associated with the correlation between mechanical strength and the fraction of bonded area, it enables to propose a predictive tool for the mechanical strength of diffusion-bonded interfaces

Aerospace technology developments are blooming. Since the 1960’s the Turbine Entry Temperature for aero-engines gas turbines keeps rising to improve their efficiency. Sensors working close to the combustion chamber are required in order to master the turbine performances. This results in an industrial urge to develop ceramic-to-metal assemblies able to endure severe engine environment (>1100°C under air, vibrations, etc.)The choice of an alumina as the ceramic part ensures a good insulation at high temperature. The main issue remains the metallic material which must be refractory, resistant to oxidation and affordable. The application of a ternary carbide (phase MAX) is tested. The braze alloy composition is adjusted to each system so as to provide a good ductility, thermal stability and a metallurgical matching as regards dissolution and brittle compounds formation.Braze alloys based on the Au-Pd-Pt system are investigated. The aforesaid liquidus and solidus surfaces are defined from experimental measures. Diffusion, dissolution and inter-granular penetration at the metal/braze alloy interface are described to suggest improvements. Aluminum diffusion from alumina-forming materials towards the braze alloy is the dominant phenomenon during brazing, despite the use of a diffusion barrier. The use of noble materials for the metallic substrate is mandatory.Geometrical and chemical assembly parameters are defined for selected brazed system based on the physicochemical interactions occurring during brazing and aging under air. The best brazed assemblies present an excellent hermeticity after brazing. Thermal cycling aging in severe conditions is detrimental to ceramic-braze alloy bonding, leading to interfacial cracks. Two promising strategies are suggested to ensure a reliable ceramic-to-braze alloy bonding during thermal cycling
