This study summarizes the history of the glial discovery, details their morphology and their physiology and aims at understanding complex interactions between cortical neurons, glia and blood supply during the transition from slow wave sleep to wakefulness in vivo in both anesthetized and naturally sleeping animals. We performed simultaneous intracellular recordings of cortical neurons and glia, together with measurements of cerebral blood flow, extracellular K+ concentrations and local field potentials under anesthesia, during elicited cortical activation with electric stimulation of cholinergic nuclei or under naturally wakefulness of the animal. We suggest that the outcome of the glial behavior depends on the glutamatergic/GABAergic influence of neighboring neurons, on the modulation of the interglial communication pathways, and/or on the ionic traffic across blood vessels.

This thesis compiles two distinct studies that both document the control of microstructures on rock seismic properties. The first part deals with the development of crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) in the uppermost mantle associated with melt/fluid-rock interactions, recorded in peridotites xenoliths from the Japan sea back-arc basin. The microstructural and geochemical characteristics of the studied samples reveal that active spreading is associated to uppermost mantle deformation similar to that observed in the Oman ophiolite. At the onset of back-arc spreading, there are no strong interactions between melt percolation and deformation in comparison to continental rift zones, probably due to the relatively small size and short duration of the spreading event. The second part presents a unique database of plagioclase CPO from variously deformed mafic rocks. CPO are grouped in three main types; their characteristics as a function of deformation regime (magmatic or crystal-plastic) are outlined and discussed. Calculated seismic properties of gabbroic rocks show that anisotropy tends to increase as a function of fabric strength, although it is generally weak, due to the competing effect of olivine/clinopyroxene and plagioclase

Power systems are evolving significantly due to economic, geopolitical, and environmental factors, notably the increasing integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) interfaced through power electronic converters, known as Inverter-Based Resources (IBR). This shift from synchronous machine (SM)-dominated systems to IBR-dominated systems introduces challenges such as reduced inertia, intermittency, and stability issues. Traditional stability analysis and modeling techniques, which assume slower dynamics inherent in SMs, are inadequate for the fast dynamics of IBRs. The emerging dominance of IBRs necessitates the development of detailed Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) models, which are computationally intensive but essential for capturing the fast dynamics of modern power systems. Existing stability classification frameworks, historically based on SM-dominated systems, are being revised to incorporate IBR influences, introducing new stability categories like Converter-Driven Stability (CDS). This work investigates novel insights into the interactions between SMs, IBR unit dynamics, and network dynamics that have been overlooked in the literature. It provides a comprehensive framework that is open-source and adaptable for generic power system topologies, allowing for scalable results and analyses. Furthermore, the proposed framework is utilized to determine optimal allocations of virtual inertia and damping in low inertia power systems to enhance frequency stability metrics

Повний текст джерелаInformationsvisualisierung ist ein wichtiges Forschungsfeld, das das Analysieren von Daten unterstützt.

The work presented in this thesis concerns the study of the interaction of low energy multiply charged ions (few tens of keV) with molecules of astrophysical relevance, either in molecular or in cluster form. It is the main aim to study the fundamental processes which occur when molecules and clusters of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are colliding with multi-charged ions (MCIs). During this interaction the potential energy transported by the ions provokes a charge transfer between the target and the projectile. Consequently, after the collision the molecules or the clusters are singly or multiply charged. We are interested in the stability of these size-finite systems in relation with the excess charge and the internal energy of the system. The different fragmentation channels which have been studied for molecules and clusters depend on their sizes, their structures, their charge states and their internal energies. The studies presented in this thesis, which are the first this kind, give new insight in the stability of the simply and multiply charged cationic clusters of PAH molecules

In this thesis, we firstly investigated the striking influence of random disorder on light transport near band edges in one dimensional photonic crystal wave guides, i.e. light localization. Near-field measurements, statistical simulations and theoretical model revealed the existence of a lower bound for the spatial extent of localized modes. We also showed that the disorder level and the spatial extent of individual localized mode is linked by the photon effective mass rather than the generally considered group velocity. Secondly, hybrid cold atoms and photonic crystal wave guides system have been recognized as a promising paradigm for engineering large light-matter interaction at single atoms and photons level. In this thesis, we studied the basic physics, i.e. light transport in periodic nanophotonic wave guides coupled to two-level atoms. Our developed general semi-analytical expression can quickly characterize the coupling between cold atoms and guided photons. Aim to overcome the significant technical challenges existed for developing hybrid atom-photonic systems, we designed a nanophotonic waveguide, which supports a slow guided Bloch mode with large evanescent tail in free space for cold atoms trapping (release the limitation imposed by Casmir Polder force and technical challenge of nanoscale manipulation of cold atoms). To match precisely the slow light region of the guided mode to the atomic transition line, we carefully engineered the photonic band and the dispersion curve (i.e.flatness) of the guided mode so that the interaction strength is robust against unpredictable fabrication imperfection

A striking feature of the olfactory sensory system is its ability to deal with a complex multi-dimensional chemical stimuli. Receptor cells in the nasal cavity are sensitive to specific features of molecules and transmit this information to the olfactory bulb, first relay for olfaction in the central nervous system. Due to the organization of projection pathways to the bulb, afferent information activates the structure in a topographical fashion ; although this may constitute a coding strategy for olfactory information it has proven insufficient, and other strategies must be investigated. Dynamic phenomenons are a preponderant feature of the olfactory bulb. The respiratory rhythm imposes a sinusoidal level of activation to the system, oscillations in local field potentials and subthreshold oscillations in neurons membrane potentials may interact and lead to the transient synchronization of sub-populations of neurons. This particular mechanism, designated as neural assemblies, is in theory a good candidate for the representation of olfactory information. The work presented here is based on conjoint recordings, in anesthetized animals, of unitary activities, oscillations in the LFP and respiration, in response to olfactory stimulation. We show the relationships existing between the various dynamic phenomenons, and hypothesize on their functional roles. We propose that a same mechanism may form different neural assemblies each assuming a specific functional role. The respiratory rhythm acts as a gating system, organizing the formation of successive yet different neural assemblies

Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) are good candidates to develop molecular platforms with controlled physico-chemical properties. A SAM is an ordered monolayer of bi-functionnal molecules. These molecules consist of an adjustable terminal function, separated from a headgroup by a chosen spacer chain. Thus, SAMs properties can be adjusted for the development of molecular electronic systems or (bio)-chemical sensors. Furthermore, additional chemical structuration can be induced by irradiation. Most current methods of irradiation involve high energy particles. The induced damages result from several competitive mechanisms (ionisations, excitations, dissociations). In this thesis, low energy electrons (0-20 eV) are used as primary particles, and the interaction processes between electrons and SAMs are studied in order to identify electron attachment resonances. At the associated energies, selective and effective dissociative processes can be induced to propose irradiation strategies leading to controlled and optimized chemical modifications.Model SAMs of thiols on gold are studied by a vibrational spectroscopy technique of strong surface sensibility, high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). It allows at the same time to characterize SAMs and to probe electron-molecule interaction processes. The result obtained deal with : 1) Aromatic model SAMs of Terphenyl-thiol (HS-(C₆H₄)₂-C₆H₅), which can be stabilized by cross-linking under irradiation. Induced reactive processes at 1, 6 and 50 eV were compared and opposed, thanks to an advanced vibrational characterization of the SAM before and after irradiation, and by paying a particular attention to the stretching mode ν(CH) behaviour.2) Mercaptoundecanoic acid SAMs (HS-(CH₂)₁ ₀ -COOH), whose terminal functions allow for example the peptide anchoring. The interface SAM / environment (COO-/COOH, residual water) was characterized thanks to the strong sensitivity of the stretching modes ν(OH) to hydrogen bonding. The approach that was developped can be easily transposed to other systems

Enhancing light-matter interactions at micro and nanoscales is one of the spearheads of nanophotonics. Indeed, the control of the field distribution due to the resonant interaction of nanostructures with electromagnetic waves has prompted the development of numerous optical components for many applications in telecommunication, spectroscopy or sensing. A promising approach lies in the control of light speed in nanostructures. Light slowdown, obtained by wave interferences in periodic structures or subwavelength confinement in plasmonic waveguides, is associated to pulse compressions and large field enhancements, which are envisioned as key processes for the miniaturization of optical devices and the enhancement of light-matter interactions. The thesis studies both fundamental aspects and possible applications related to slow light in photonic and plasmonic nanostructures. In particular, we study the impact of periodic system sizes on the group velocity reduction and propose a novelfamily of resonators that implement slow light on very small spatial scales. We then investigate the role of fabrication disorder in slow periodic waveguides on light localization and demonstrate how modal properties influence the confinement of localized modes. Also we propose a new hollow-core photonic crystal waveguide that provides efficient and remote couplings between the waveguide and atoms thatare trapped away from it. Finally we demonstrate the important role played by slow plasmons on the emission of quantum emitters placed in nanogap plasmonic antennas and explain how large radiation efficiency can be achieved by overcoming quenching in the metal. Additionally, one part of the thesis is devoted to thederivation of a novel modal method to accurately describe the dynamics of plasmonic resonators under short pulse illumination

Genes located on the DNA macromolecule inside our cells do not onlycarry hereditary information. They also contribute dynamically tobiological functions by synthesizing proteins at a variable rate.Proteins are subject to many nonlinear interactions with other actors, forming vast biochemical networks which may display a number ofcomplex behaviors. In particular, regulation of gene activity (i.e.,of their transcription rate) by specific proteins creates feedbackloops. These loops form genetic networks where a set of genes regulatetheir expressions reciprocally. Recent experimental studies have shown that gene regulation is notalways instantaneous. We have thus studied the influence of anintrinsic transcriptional dynamics in the simple circuit where a geneis repressed by its own protein. We have obtained an analyticalcriterion for the appearance of oscillations, which allows us to showthat oscillations are favored when gene response time is close to acharacteristic value. The time scale thus identified is relevant bothin a deterministic and a stochastic description. Gene regulatory networks are also at work in some biological rhythms, inducing oscillations in the concentrations of some key proteins. These networks then serve as endogeneous clocks, which allow manyliving organisms to anticipate periodic changes in the environment. Inparticular, the circadian clock is used by organisms to adapt to thediurnal cycle by being entrained by the day/night cycle. Using experimental data, we have constructed a mathematical model ofthe circadian clock of the unicellular alga Ostreococcus tauri. This model is based on a transcriptional negative feedback loop, whichinvolves two genes regulating each other. Agreement between numericalsimulations and experimental data is excellent and unveils the factthat there is no signature of coupling in data when the clock is ontime. This reveals a strong robustness to daylight fluctuations

With the rise of AI-embedded systems assisting decisions in the context of medicine, justice, recruiting, Human-AI trust has become an utmost design priority. Numerous governments and large enterprises as well as researchers propose various strategies on how to foster trust in AI-embedded systems. However, trust is a complex, multifaceted concept, and Human-AI trust, being a recent research avenue, faces several challenges. On the theoretical level, the difference between trust and other related theoretical concepts (e.g. reliance, compliance, and trustworthiness) needs to be understood as well as the factors affecting Human-AI trust. On the methodological level, trust is difficult to assess, and appropriate protocols have to be understood. In this thesis, I tackle these challenges empirically through two lenses - academia and industry. I first conduct a systematic literature review of empirical studies on Human-AI trust in the context of decision making to get an overview of how trust is defined and evaluated in academia. However, as most studies are focusing on users' trust investigated in the controlled lab setting with AI mock-ups, I go further to investigate to which extent these findings hold true for other stakeholders with AI-embedded systems deployed in the market. To do so, I conduct a series of semi-structured interviews on the topic of Human-AI trust definitions and evaluation with people who develop and design AI-embedded systems assisting decision making and with people who are affected by these decisions. I argue that theoretical understanding of Human-AI trust directly affects experimental protocol and measures choices. Drawing from the social sciences literature, I propose guidelines on improving experimental protocols for studying Human-AI trust in the context of decision making. I also demonstrate that discussing theoretical concepts, such as Human-AI trust, with laypeople of different backgrounds not only can validate the academic theories, but also potentially contribute to theoretical advancement. Lastly, I provide an overview of factors that can affect Human-AI trust in the context of decision making and, based on the comparison between the findings of academia and industry, I highlight research opportunities and design implications for academic researchers and AI practitioners. This thesis provides theoretical and empirical evidence on Human-AI trust in the context of decision making and opens the ways to support trust in Human-AI interaction

The object of the work presented in this thesis concerns the study of the interaction of an ultrasonic beam with an anisotropic multilayered structure. We have develop a model which allow one to simulate an ultrasonic non-destructive experiments conducted on anisotropic multilayered materials,. The study reveals the physics of the interaction of the acoustic beams with the plate and the nature of the propagation of the modal waves. Consideration of the ultrasonic bounded beam is made by decomposition into monochromatic plane waves. We consider a multilayered anisotropic plate immersed in a fluid media as well as two transducers, one emitter, the other receiver, at arbitrary angle and arranged freely in the space. The goal of this model is to simulate the signal detected by the receiver, following a pressure variation on the front face, and an arbitrary excitation of the emitter. Our software allows one to deal with three-dimensional geometry. We show that the direction of propagation of the modal wave beam, normal to the Lamb wave slowness curve, does not belong any more to the sagittal plane, due to the anisotropy. The deviation of Lamb wave beams is predicted by using two different methods: an analytical method which appeals to Lamb slowness curves, and a numerical method using the software described above. This phenomenon of deviation is illustrated in a numerical and experimental way in the cases of a Carbon-Epoxy unidirectional and multilayered (only numerical results are shown) plates, where the fibres are not contained in the sagittal plane. Then, we present the determination of the Lamb wave energy velocity, when the plate is immersed in water, by using an analytical formulation of the energy velocity vector. Energy vectors are thus studied for miscellaneous structures and notably, the phenomenon of focalisation is presented

This thesis presents the results of my PhD research on the design, fabrication, and first optical characterisation of GaInP-based slow-mode nanophotonic waveguides intended for the strong interaction of guided photons with the D₂ transition (780 nm) of ⁸⁷Rb atoms. The approach involves coupling atoms to the guided mode of a waveguide, a concept referred to as Waveguide Quantum Electrodynamics (Waveguide QED). The photonic crystal waveguides were designed with dispersion engineering to achieve slow mode with high group indices (∼30 - 50) around 780 nm. In the design, fabrication tolerance has been addressed by ensuring guided mode over a bandwidth of ∼10 nm. The waveguide is intended to be suspended, allowing free space around its vicinity to facilitate the convenient transport of atoms to its proximity and easy coupling of light from an external laser source. Details on an optimized and reproducible nanofabrication process have been reported. The encountered fabrication challenges and the corresponding solutions have been addressed, followed by an analysis of the fabrication results. A preliminary optical characterisation of the waveguides was conducted, in which the transmission spectra featuring the guided mode around 780nm were observed

This work of thesis aims to visualize, on a position sensitive detector, the spatial oscillations of slow electrons (~meV) emitted by a threshold photoionization in the presence of an external electric field. The interference figure obtained represents the square magnitude of electronic wavefunction. This fundamental work allows us to have access to the electronic dynamics and thus to highlight several quantum mechanisms that occur at the atomic scale (field Coulomb, electron/electron interaction..). Despite the presence an electronic core in Li atom, we have succeeded, experimentally and for the first time, to visualize the wave function associated with the quasi-discrete Stark states coupled to the ionization continuum. Besides, using simulations of wave packet propagation, based on the "Split-operator” method, we have conducted a comprehensive study of the H, Li and Cs atoms while revealing the significant effects of the Stark resonances. A very good agreement, on and off resonances, was obtained between simulated and experimental results. In addition, we have developed a generalized analytical model to understand deeply the function of VMI spectrometer. This model is based on the paraxial approximation; it is based on matrix optics calculation by making an analogy between the electronic trajectory and the light beam. An excellent agreement was obtained between the model predictions and the experimental results

Quantum interference, coherent superposition of quantum states, are widely used for the understanding and engineering of the quantum world. In this thesis, two distinct problems that are rooted in quantum interference are discussed with their potential applications: 1. Laser induced electron diffraction (LIED) and molecular orbital imaging, 2. Collective effects in dense vapors and dipole induced electromagnetic transparency (DIET). The first part deals with the recollision mechanism in molecules when the system is exposed to high intensity infrared laser fields. The interaction with the intense field will tunnel ionize the system, creating an electron wave packet in the continuum. This wave packet follows an oscillatory trajectory driven by the laser field. This results in a collision with the parent ion from which the wave packet was formed. This scattering process can end up in different channels including either inelastic scattering resulting in high harmonic generation (HHG) and non-sequential double ionization, or elastic scattering often called laser induced electron diffraction. LIED carries information about the molecule and about the initial state from which the electron was born as diffraction patterns formed due to the interference between different diffraction pathways. In this project, a method is developed for imaging molecular orbitals relying on scattered photoelectron spectra obtained via LIED. It is based on the fact that the scattering wave function keeps the memory of the object from which it has been scattered. An analytical model based on the strong field approximation (SFA) is developed for linear molecules and applied to the HOMO and HOMO-1 molecular orbitals of carbon dioxide. Extraction of orbital information imprinted in the photoelectron spectra is presented in detail. It is anticipated that it could be extended to image the electro-nuclear dynamics of such systems. The second part of the thesis deals with collective effects in dense atomic or molecular vapors. The action of light on the vapor samples creates dipoles which oscillate and produce secondary electro-magnetic waves. When the constituent particles are close enough and exposed to a common exciting field, the induced dipoles can affect one another, setting up a correlation which forbids them from responding independently towards the external field. The result is a cooperative response leading to effects unique to such systems which include Dicke narrowing, superradiance, Lorentz-Lorenz and Lamb shifts. To this list of collective effects, one more candidate has been added, which is revealed during this study: an induced transparency in the sample. This transparency, induced by dipole-dipole interactions, is named “dipole-induced electromagnetic transparency”. The collective nature of the dense vapor excitation reduces the group velocity of the transmitted light to a few tens of meter per second resulting in 'slow' light. These effects are demonstrated for the D1 transitions of 85Rb and other potential applications are also discussed

The scientific operations of space telescopes and ground-based facilities worldwide have produced a flood of astronomical data waiting to be analyzed. Thus the development of fast and efficient system is in urgent demand for the purpose of data mining. The discovery of gravitational lensing events and interacting galaxies are very important in the study of cosmology. However, both types of structures are relatively rare and often hidden in the mountain of images. For these reasons, we have developed an automatic system to identify these objects from image archives by shape analysis. First, candidates are selected with the shape parameter defined by our method and a line and an arc are then fitted to these potential candidates. From error analysis the best shape can be identified. The algorithm developed in this work has been tested on two of the gravitational lensing events found in the RCS and proved to be successful. Furthermore, it has also been applied to a portion of the RCS data set, which consists of 210 images and dozens of interacting galaxies have been found.
