The results of a study of the effectiveness of intersectoral interactions in the agri-food complex are presented. Particular attention is paid to the factors of interindustry balance, changes in interindustry proportions of exchange, and the dynamics of intermediate consumption. The results of the analysis of the interindustry structure of the participation of the stages of food chains in the production of value added are shown. An assessment is given of the possibilities of including industries and enterprises of the complex in global value chains and the necessity of ensuring national control of their priority links is substantiated. The proposals on the development of the mechanism of state support in the context of growing integration dependence are contained.

Tourism industry as an object of management can be represented as a set of formal relations (interactions) between different organizations. Domestic and foreign researchers are unanimous in the opinion that the network interaction of companies is an important condition for the tourism industry effective functioning and for the sustainable development of a tourist destination as well. In terms of the named vector of scientific research, the efficiency of the inter-organizational relations (IOR) deserves special attention. At the initial stage of discussion are both the content of the IOR efficiency category and its assessment. The article presents a conceptual model for assessing the IOR efficiency in tourism in the context of a combination of three approaches: goal-oriented, functional and systemic. The authors identified the functions, goals, and indicators of the efficiency of inter-organizational relations in the tourism network.

PurposeThis research paper examines how hub firm transformation and restructuring of network partnerships shape the development of industrial clusters in China.Design/methodology/approachQuestionnaire data were collected from 210 managers (response rate 70.9 percent) from the manufacturing industrial clusters in Eastern China.FindingsThe results inform that a cluster’s hub firm transformation influences the evolution of the cluster. Though the hub firm may possess transformation capabilities, the cluster is likely to be weakened if network partnerships and resource synergy are not formed amongst the cluster members.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper, in examining the individual- and firm-level attributes of orchestration capability and their interactions, sheds light on the firm level and inter-firm level relationships between resources and innovation in an industrial cluster.Practical implicationsTo facilitate learning and the upgrading of firms within an industry cluster and promote a cluster’s innovation network, policymakers can initiate preferential policy measures to cultivate support to strategically transform a cluster’s hub firm, thus fostering cluster network growth.Originality/valueThe paper studies the evolution of clusters by investigating the hub firm transformation and member firm interaction. Focusing on the inter-firm network interactions lends a richer understanding of the nuances of the evolution of industrial clusters in Asia.

Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) has recently gained attention both within industry and academia; however, its characteristics cannot be easily solved using existing distributed computing technologies. Composition and interaction issues have been the central concerns, because SOC applications are composed of heterogeneous and distributed processes. To tackle the complexity of inter-organizational service integration, the authors propose a methodology to decompose complex process requirements into different types of flows, such as control, data, exception, and security. The subset of each type of flow necessary for the interactions with each partner can be determined in each service. These subsets collectively constitute a process view, based on which interactions can be systematically designed and managed for system integration through service composition. The authors illustrate how the proposed SOC middleware, named FlowEngine, implements and manages these flows with contemporary Web services technologies. An experimental case study in an e-governmental environment further demonstrates how the methodology can facilitate the design of complex inter-organizational processes.

PurposeThis article seeks to explore the micro‐dimensions of knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs) with the aim of developing an appreciation of the personal interactions that facilitate the success of these university‐industry collaborations.Design/methodology/approachEmpirical evidence concerning the operation of three KTPs, collected through interviews with the key partners and the review of relevant documentary material, is analysed through the lens of the communities of practice approach to situated learning.FindingsThe analysis of three case studies provides evidence to support the value of conceptualising the process of knowledge transfer between universities and industry as one of learning taking place within communities in which the development of mutual engagement, joint enterprise and shared repertoires play important roles facilitating successful collaborations. Moreover, the analysis highlights the significance of the boundary spanning roles of the KTP partners in facilitating the knowledge transfer process through engagement in both the university and industry communities.Research limitations/implicationsBy illuminating the dimensions of the inter‐personal interactions involved in the knowledge transfer process the CoPs analysis provides the foundations for recommendations to improve university‐industry KTPs, in particular, and, inter‐organisational knowledge transfer initiatives in general. A limitation of this research is its focus on the UK context. Moreover, given the exploratory nature of this study further research is required to verify the findings reported here.Originality/valueThe article makes an original empirical and conceptual contribution to understandings of university‐industry knowledge transfer collaborations.

As factors affecting interregional interactions play an important role in regional economic development. Thus, developing a methodology for assessing these interactions is becoming urgent. The article proposes a methodological approach to analyse the factors influencing possible interactions between Sverdlovsk oblast and other constituent entities of the Russian Federation in the manufacturing industry. It is hypothesised that the elements of an interregional interaction matrix are proxy variables characterising the degree of this interaction. An economic analysis of relations and production chains between Sverdlovsk oblast and other constituent entitles confirmed this hypothesis. First, based on the spatial distribution of manufacturing output in the examined regions, values of an indicator showing the strength of their mutual influence were determined. Second, the impact of economic, infrastructural and institutional factors on the obtained indicator, characterising the inter action between Sverdlovsk oblast and other regions, was assessed using quantile regression. In this case, such a technique was chosen instead of the classical ordinary least squares (OLS) regression that incorrectly estimates the dependencies between the studied variables. This is expressed in the fact that the regression coefficients de pend on q-quantile of the dependent variable. We have revealed that price levels of the examined regions do not affect their possible interactions with Sverdlovsk oblast. Simultaneously, the dissemination of knowledge acts a driver of interaction between the considered regional manufacturing industries. The research findings can be used to prepare strategies, programmes and schemes for the placement and development of industries, considering the potential of Sverdlovsk oblast and other Russian regions.

Purpose – This conceptual paper aims to examine how the concept of host and guest interaction could help remedy the socio-economic impacts as created by tourism in Jamaica. The paper identifies that tourism development in Jamaica has created a range of negative social impacts, which include changes in attitude, aspirations and lifestyles of young people, who may come from poor backgrounds but are increasingly exposed to the consumerist lifestyles of wealthy visitors and the so-called role models in the society, “the Dons”. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative approach was employed as the focus for this study. The survey of residents, and tourists in Ocho Rios and Negril in Jamaica were primary sources of data for this paper. Findings – The tourism industry in Jamaica has seen a great diversification in recent years. The industry now ranges from conventional tourism (sun, sand, sea and sex) to cruise tourism, moderate community based tourism, heritage and cultural tourism, and more recently nature-tourism. However, social factors remain a deterrent. It is apparent that relying on the concept and principles of host and guest interaction presents a strategic option for success and if one is to understand the impact of tourism on the residents, the inter-action between the various elements in the system must be understood. Originality/value – The attitudes of Jamaicans are important in determining the level of host and guest interaction and the level of success in the industry. Attitude is the fulcrum from which quality service is delivered; as such, the people must be in tune with the industry at all levels in order to achieve a sustainable tourism industry.

Previous research has addressed the importance of IOC, where the outcome of a poor IOC between actors in a network will affect the information sharing and the inter-organizational relationship. The topic has been extensively researched, however researchers are still highlighting the need to further research.   A literature review on the topic area generated an overview of the existing literature within the field. The literature review identified a research gap that founded the purpose of this study. The purpose is to reveal the actors within the industry and how the IOC is structured among three cruise line destinations in Sweden and in the network Cruise Baltic.    The study was of a qualitative nature and was conducted through a multiple case study. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with three cruise line destinations and one cruise line industry network.   The interview data reveals the IOC of the chosen industry and that the destinations have some barriers to overcome when it comes to achieving an effective IOC. Based on the conclusions of this study recommendations for managerial implications were formed.   The findings of the research were able to support previous studies regarding IOC and its key variables. It was revealed that the destinations and the network execute an effective IOC to some extent. The destinations are considerable small in size, which has influenced the IOC to the other actors within the network.

The roles of inter-firm networks and industrial clusters as main carriers of knowledge between firms have received a lot of attention over the past decade. Yet, there has been little research to bring the dimensions of relational space and geographic space together when considering knowledge spillovers between firms. Through the collection of social network data at the firm level and its analysis—using a combination of social network and econometric methods (i.e. network density comparison, QAP regression on cross network ties, negative binomial regression on influence-driving firm attributes), the aim of this thesis is to analyze the nature and extent of inter-firm networks in Taiwan’s Fastener Industry, and to examine the interaction and influences between each network, whether the firms actually acquire valuable knowledge through these networks as opposed to superficial information. The relationships between clustering effect, brokerage roles of firms and the knowledge network structure are also explored. Empirical results, based on survey data from 87 firms, revel the structural differences between social interaction network and the other two networks (i.e. knowledge and information), but knowledge and information networks do not differ a great deal in terms of their structures. Additionally, knowledge is unevenly diffused in the industry, but flows within a core group of firms. The importance of inter-firm social interactions and information exchange are also confirmed as important channels of knowledge diffusion, indicating that firms share not only information, but quite valuable knowledge through these contacts. Furthermore, significant clustering effects can be observed and do indeed influence the formation of knowledge linkages in industries; however, not all brokerage roles of firms appear to have positive effects on their knowledge sharing.

This study examines how strategic groups form and interact across various groups, in terms of fragmented industry composed by small and medium-sized firms - - Taiwanese industry. Research based on case study for four representative valve firms indicates three strategic groups can be extracted from the industry: manufacturer, manufacture-trader and trader. The analytical results indicate that firms’ abilities are the key to form entry barrier, strategic groups, and isolating mechanism between strategic groups. Based on isolating mechanism formed by strategic resources properties of Resource-based theory, and path-dependence of resources, depth and width of a firm’s abilities will decide the area and group where it enters the industry, and its developing direction after entering the industry, and will build different entry barrier and isolating mechanism between strategic groups for new entrants. Besides, as entry barriers and isolating mechanism is forming from firm’s abilities, when entry barrier is high, the isolating mechanism is high, too. When entry barrier is low, the isolating mechanism is low, too. Moreover, height of entry barrier and isolating mechanism is strongly related to the competitive situation of firms within group and cooperative situation of firms between groups. The competition of firms within group is less violent for strategic group with high entry barriers and isolating mechanism. The competition of firms within group is more violent for strategic group with low entry barriers and isolating mechanism. High isolating mechanism built by firm’s abilities creates firms’ cooperation relationship between groups. This is close to Industry Ecology theory. Research and managerial implications are also identified.

Characterization enables a microscopic understanding of the fundamental properties of materials (Science) to predict their macroscopic behavior (Engineering). With this focus, the book presents a comprehensive discussion of the principles of materials characterization and metrology. Characterization techniques are introduced through elementary concepts of bonding, electronic structure of molecules and solids, and the arrangement of atoms in crystals. Then, the range of electrons, photons, ions, neutrons and scanning probes, used in characterization, including their generation and related beam-solid interactions that determine or limit their use, are presented. This is followed by ion-scattering methods, optics, optical diffraction, microscopy, and ellipsometry. Generalization of Fraunhofer diffraction to scattering by a three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in crystals, leads to X-ray, electron, and neutron diffraction methods, both from surfaces and the bulk. Discussion of transmission and analytical electron microscopy, including recent developments, is followed by chapters on scanning electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopies. It concludes with elaborate tables to provide a convenient and easily accessible way of summarizing the key points, features, and inter-relatedness of the different spectroscopy, diffraction, and imaging techniques presented throughout. The book uniquely combines a discussion of the physical principles and practical application of these characterization techniques to explain and illustrate the fundamental properties of a wide range of materials in a tool-based approach. Based on forty years of teaching and research, and including worked examples, test your knowledge questions, and exercises, the target readership of the book is wide, for it is expected to appeal to the teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, and to post-docs, in multiple disciplines of science, engineering, biology and art conservation, and to professionals in industry.

Abstract This chapter examines the role of formal education, training and skills development in Conservation Agriculture (CA) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in the context of the region's agricultural transformation systems. It explores nascent literature on potential reforms that include development of CA educational programmes and linkages that are more strategically attuned to national agriculture development aspirations. The chapter highlights theoretical grounds and practical examples for the multi-level strategies with complementary relationships aimed at facilitating systemic CA-related education, training and skills development to accelerate and expand its uptake in Africa. The chapter has advocated educational institutions and the university in particular to orchestrate the CA innovation value chain through 'internal' alignment of actors at institutional level (i.e. intra-organizational mainstreaming). The success of an innovation also depends on its 'external' viability. This was illustrated by proposing inter-organizational mainstreaming and a triple helix model where government and industry, respectively, are the principal actors towards increase in sociotechnical viability of the CA innovation system. There are obvious hurdles related to the interactions and coordination between stakeholders, as well as the integration of value complementarities across the value chain. Probable corrective strategies have been exhaustively interrogated and they are, for instance, manifested through technical and organizational adaptations as they summarize and compare systematically their contributions, arguments, assumptions and limitations in the process of creating and harnessing economies of scope in innovation. There may not be any ideal model for demand-led, CA-related education, training and skills development. A number of strategic options present themselves and, in a dynamic world, all strategies are relatively short-lived but must yield outcomes that contribute to longer-term goals. The educational institutions should find appropriate themes and avenues worthy of support in their own right, and projects that invite collaboration on their own terms.

Abstract This chapter draws on the Field Guide, as well as on a recent study of the boundary work of collaborating in cross-disciplinary and crosssector work, with added insights from literature on team science. Heeding the editors' mandate to focus on pragmatics, it depicts the 'how' of collaboration across boundaries of expertise in short essays that define major dimensions. Each essay is framed at the start by keywords and ends with pertinent resources that individuals and groups may use in whole or in part for training modules and workshops, interventions in the course of actually conducting research, and formal curricula in higher education. The initial section of the chapter describes the overarching topic of collaboration, including the role of a collaboration plan and the centrality of communication. The remaining sections discuss three subtopics that are often linked with collaboration. The first, cross-disciplinary and crosssector work, reveals distinctions in kinds of teamwork. The second, integration, discloses degrees of interaction and synthesis. The third, leadership, describes typical needs and responsibilities. These shorter accounts of related concepts and approaches begin with definitions of crossdisciplinarity (spanning multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches) and cross-sector work (bridging the academy, government, industry, and communities in the north and global south). After a short summary, the conclusion reflects on the importance of integrative expertise among all team members along with needed requisite competencies.

This paper investigates the collective use of a simple modeling technology by highly complex, heterogeneous and numerous groups of stakeholders who heavily depend upon it to mediate their interactions. We use economic theory, design theory, complex systems theory and business process modeling concepts to analyze deregulation and business to business interaction in the UK electricity industry, and the strategic business and IT response of Electric Co, a large electricity supply company. The relevance of this study comes from its investigation of a novel example of the shaping of a whole sector’s ebusiness through regulatory law and thus we are concerned with enterprise and inter-enterprise systems not purely with ERP systems. We focus on model-based business interaction and its effect upon the business and consumer behaviors of a whole country’s electricity sector. This sector is a socio-technical system; so business processes and consumer behaviors are not only shaped by the regulator’s legally enforced business to business process interaction model, but the opinions of businesses and the public also influence how the regulator updates its model. Thus business behaviors, consumer behaviors and the model interact to shape each other. By moving from intra to inter-organizational business processes we seek to demonstrate and explain the value of models in e-business where the complexity of interacting business systems involves many thousands of parameters. We show how developments in technical standards and business process management are related to inter-organizational interaction and coordination.

There is growing concern that ongoing degradation of natural capital, due to various global and local drivers of change, will compromise the delivery of the ecosystem services on which the tourism industry relies. This chapter aims to explore the relationships between natural capital and tourism. The chapter first provides an introduction to the inter-dependencies between business and natural capital and presents an overview of the tourism sector in South Africa. The focus then shifts to conceptualizing the links between tourism and natural capital, focusing on inland freshwater systems. A conceptual framework of the interactions between natural capital and the tourism sector is presented and key links between hydrologic ecosystem services and the tourism sector are described. In the final section, the risks of increasingly stressed water resources on tourism and the South African economy are explored.

While e-procurement provides efficiency and cost-savings, are governments that are utilizing these systems really getting what they want, particularly when procuring services? While e-procurement provides governments methods to communicate better with service providers and have access to more service providers, do the systems allow for collaboration? As there is a significant amount of research the issues related to procurement in the U.S., this chapter will use it as an example to demonstrate the need to collaborate and not just communicate. For years there has been discussion on the issues and reforms to the U.S. federal procurement process. One of the major issues is communications and collaboration. Goodrich provided in his Federal Times article “6 simple fixed for the federal procurement process.” Five of the six areas involve communications and collaboration: poorly conceived documentation; contracting offices and program offices working as a team rather than independent; lengthy procurement decisions; government understands what they bought; and talk with industry. This chapter provides the background of the procurement process, current trends and recent approaches. It explores how the Alpha contracting method could be applied to Contracts by Negotiations / Full and Open procurements. Finally, it provides a Collaborative Government Model which takes a holistic and strategic approach to collaboration. There is a need to approach this collaboration in a strategic manner as it includes facets such as hierarchy, networking, and inter-personal interactions that are not linear in nature.

The phenomenon of university-industry partnership (UIP) has become a valuable research endeavor. However, examining UIP-related literature shows limited understanding from a social capital (SC) perspective, albeit its relevance. Likewise, it is noticeable that research on inter-organizational SC has been predominantly conducted from the perspective of homogenous organizations (i.e., have consistent expectation, mission, and culture). However, the perspective of social interaction between heterogeneous organizations (i.e., belong to different sectors thus inherently different) is limited. The authors address these two gaps by investigating the idiosyncrasy of SC development in the setting of UIP, as a unique context for heterogeneous inter-organizational SC. They contribute to the literature by exposing the various facets of SC dynamics as evolve in this uncommon domain. Also, the identify four factors as moderating the interaction between the three dimensions of SC that eventually influence the dual processes of technology translation and transfer.

Port-centric logistics clusters are considered as intermodal gateways and/or hubs of international trade, which connect national economies with global production networks. These clusters are spatial agglomeration of logistics related interconnected and interdependent companies. Singapore, Dubai and Rotterdam are world class exemplary of port-centric logistics clusters. The formation of these clusters is a derivative of conducive business environment generated within a geographically defined area. Despite the recognition of port-centric approach to economic development there is insufficient evidence to empirically assess the functional and spatial characteristics of port centric logistics clusters. There is also disagreement on three key questions: how port-centric logistics clusters are defined and identified, what industry types do they constitute and what methods are appropriate to delineate the boundary of port centric logistics cluster. In this paper, a spatial approach is adopted to geographically delineate the spatial congregation of port-centric logistics employment using three major container ports in Australia. Using the Census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS 2006), analysis has been conducted on employment data containing information about where people work and what industry they work within the close vicinity of case study seaports. The results show that the spatial extent Australian port centric logistics clusters, which tend to vary both in size and shape. Overall size of employment in port-related industries in Australia has grown substantially. Road freight is dominating industry in the port-centric logistics cluster with a contribution of 23.02% and 37.54% in 2001 and 2006 respectively. The range of port-centric logistics cluster in Melbourne is towards western suburbs and in Botany Bay the port-centric logistics cluster is discerned mainly around eastern suburbs and in Brisbane the spread of port-centred logistics cluster is towards southeast inner Brisbane and Northwest Inner Brisbane suburbs. This shows the impact of land use consolidation by the State Government in their effort to boost transport and warehousing employment closer to Australian container ports. The establishment of port-centric logistics clusters, we argue, could mean the opportunities for organisations to achieve agglomeration economies, increase rivalry among organizations to promote competition, access to greater pool of customers, availability of skilled labour force, closer proximity between customers and supplier, sharing of public infrastructure and resources, increased inter-firm interactions, and knowledge spill-over.

The chapter examines collaboration with universities from the perspective of firms, drawing on survey data from 1200 Norwegian firms. Around one in five firms collaborate with a university. The firms provide various motives for collaborating, including access to knowledge, access to students and staff, and improving their reputation. The collaborations span a wide variety of different mechanisms, including research, teaching and other activities. Frequently used indicators of university-industry interaction, such as joint research projects and contract research, account for less than half of all collaborations, while informal consultations and training or educational programmes emerge as important areas of collaboration. In two-thirds of the cases, the local university is the most important partner for university-industry interaction, while the national technical university NTNU accounts for more than half of the most important inter-regional connections. In total, 93 percent of firms involved in university-industry interaction have connections to their local universities. However, half of them also interact with universities in other regions of Norway, and 30 percent with foreign universities. Hence, local universities can act as bridges that also enable firms to reach distant research groups.

While the benefits of adopting interorganisational supply chain management (IOSCM) initiatives, such as efficient consumer response (ECR) and collaborative, planning, forecasting, and replenishment (CPFR), have been widely reported within industry, their adoption has been slow and below industry expectations. There is a lack of theory within the literature to explain this problem in IOSCM initiatives adoption. Employing an inductive case-study approach to theory building, broadly in the tradition of grounded theory, this chapter develops a process model that captures the complexity of intra-industry interactions in the course of IOSCM adoption and argues for a normative path that necessarily has to be taken to achieve the increasing levels of integration envisioned in IOSCM initiatives. The Industrial Internet of Things is a key enabler of a new set of capabilities for the manufacturing industry. As more objects become inter-connected, there is a greater need to a) securely share data and b) intelligently manage and exploit the potential of data that is accessible close to its source. Edge intelligence is a consequence of the desire to “push” computation and storage to the limits of network infrastructure, in a way that supports intelligent visualisation and interaction with data within the context that it is generated. This chapter examines pertinent topics for potential consumers of IIoT, and by way of a case study in the manufacturing domain, explores the limits and potential of edge intelligence.

Wafer Level Chip Scale Package (WLCSP) has been a favorable packaging solution for compact portable consumer electronics. The microelectronics industry introduced Extra Low K (ELK) to enhance electric performances with the cost of diminishing mechanical reliability. The ELK itself and its interfaces are highly fragile and susceptible to fracture. ELK cracking under bumps and ELK inter layer delamination (ILD) from die corners are often observed during and after solder reflow and qualification process such as accelerated thermal cycling (ATC). In this study, the underfill selection and its fillet formation influence to the Chip Packaging Interactions (CPI) of WLCSP was investigated through an experimental technique and numerical analysis. For the experimental assessment, thermo-mechanical interactions between die corner and underfill was investigated. Digital image correlation (DIC) technique with optical microscope was utilized to quantify the deformation behavior and strains of cross-sectioned WLCSP die corner subjected to thermal loading from 25°C to 125°C. The results clearly show captured deformations of die corner area under thermal loading. For the fillet formation influence, it shows that the high underfill fillet configuration gives higher normal strain at the die corner area during thermal cycling. For the underfill selection, it clearly shows that the strain difference at corner solder during thermal cycling caused by two different type of underfill material. Finally, finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted by simulating the thermal loading applied in the experiments and validated with experimental results. Then, using the FEA analysis, parametric study for underfill material properties and fillet height were performed on the ELK reliability of WLCSP. Energy release rate of the die corner crack were obtained and used as damage indicators for die corner ELK delamination.

Abstract It is generally observed in inter-organizational communication that present-day data exchange standards are too costly, large, slow to respond to industry demands, and complex to develop and use. These problems in data exchange are felt keenly by the manufacturing industry and its vast supply chains. In addressing these challenges, a successful attempt was recently made that involves two major developments. The first is the Core Components Technical Specification (CCTS), which is an ISO-approved meta-model for data exchange standards. CCTS introduces common data types, uniform structure for data models, and data usage semantics. The second is Score, which is a novel open-source software tool. Score was developed by National Institute of Standards and Technology researchers as a platform to take advantage of the CCTS for data exchange standards development and usage. This paper describes the potential of the CCTS and the Score platform, and describes the current status of the Score platform and Score-enabled industry interactions.

Thermal Interface Materials (TIMs) are particulate composite materials widely used in the microelectronics industry to reduce the thermal resistance between the device and heat sink. Predictive modeling using fundamental physical principles is critical to developing new TIMs since it can be used to quantify the effect of particle volume fraction and arrangements on the effective thermal conductivity. The existing analytical descriptions of thermal transport in particulate systems do not accurately account for the effect of inter-particle interactions, especially in the intermediate volume fractions of 30%–80%. An efficient Random Network Model (RNM) that captures the near-percolation transport in these particle-filled systems, taking into account the inter-particle interactions and random size distributions, was previously developed by the authors. The RNM is computationally efficient compared to full field simulations and was demonstrated to match to within 5% of the full field simulations and to within 15% of the experimentally measured values. The RNM approach uses a cylindrical region to approximate the thermal transport within the filler particles and to capture the inter-particle interactions. This approximation is less accurate when the polydispersivity of the particulate system increases. In the present paper, a novel semi-spherical approximation to the conductance of the fillers is presented as an alternative to the cylindrical region approximation used earlier. The new semi-spherical model is compared to the cylindrical model in two and three dimensions. In two dimensions, the semi-spherical model and the cylindrical model were compared with Finite Element Model (FEM) results. The comparison showed that the temperature distribution of the semi-spherical model matched more closely to the FEM model than the temperature distribution of the cylinder model when the radius ratio of the two particles increases. In three dimension microstructures, the semi-spherical model and the cylindrical model were compared under various volume fractions. The comparison showed that thermal conductivities of the semi-spherical model were always higher than thermal conductivities of the cylindrical model and were in better agreement with existing experimental data for particulate TIMs at 58% volume loading.

Abstract The high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a complete wind turbine model usually require significant computational resources. It will require much more resources if the fluid-structure interactions between the blade and the flow are considered, and it has been the major challenge in the industry. The aeromechanical analysis of a complete wind turbine model using a high-fidelity CFD method is discussed in this paper. The distinctiveness of this paper is the application of the nonlinear frequency domain solution method to analyse the forced response and flutter instability of the blade as well as to investigate the unsteady flow field across the wind turbine rotor and the tower. This method also enables the aeromechanical simulations of wind turbines for various inter blade phase angles in a combination with a phase shift solution method. Extensive validations of the nonlinear frequency domain solution method against the conventional time domain solution method reveal that the proposed frequency domain solution method can reduce the computational cost by one to two orders of magnitude.

Particle laden polymer composites are widely used as thermal interface materials in the electronics cooling industry. The projected small chip-sizes and high power applications in the near future demand higher values of effective thermal conductivity of the thermal interface materials (TIMs) used between the chip and the heat-spreader and the heat-spreader and heat-sink. However, over two decades of research has not yielded materials with significantly improved effective thermal conductivities. A critical need in developing these TIMs is apriori modeling using fundamental physical principles to predict the effect of particle volume fraction and arrangements on effective behavior. Such a model will enable one to optimize the structure and arrangement of the material. The existing analytical descriptions of thermal transport in particulate systems under predict (as compared to the experimentally observed values) the effective thermal conductivity since these models do not accurately account for the effect of inter-particle interactions, especially when particle volume fractions approach the percolation limits of approximately 60%. Most existing theories are observed to be accurate when filler material volume fractions are less than 30–35%. In this paper, we present a hierarchical, meshless, computational procedure for creating complex microstructures, explicitly analyzing their effective thermal behavior, and mathematically optimizing particle sizes and arrangements. A newly developed object-oriented symbolic, java language framework termed jNURBS implementing the developed procedure is used to generate and analyze representative random microstructures of the TIMs.

Abstract Drilling performance is greatly driven by the rate of penetration (ROP) and its optimization. Therefore, accurate prediction of ROP before drilling can help take measures to achieve drilling objectives smoothly. Numerous inter-twined formation and drilling parameters affect the ROP. Consequently, optimizing and predicting ROP is a complex challenge faced by the industry. This study proposes a novel computational intelligence-based (CI) model to predict ROP as a function of multiple readily available mud- and petrophysical- logs. Furthermore, multiple algorithms are utilized, and a comparative analysis is presented. Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), along with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based algorithms are utilized to analyze the data and develop models. A process-based approach is followed starting with systematic data analysis, which includes a selection of the most relevant input parameters, data cleaning, filtering, and data-dressing to ensure optimized inputs into the computational models. This step allows for developing ROP predictor as a function of pivotal formation-related logs such as neutron, density, wave velocity, and gamma ray. Moreover, historical drilling-related parameters such as weight on bit, mud pump parameters, and bit flow rate are also used as model inputs. Next, CI model parameters are tuned for both ANN and ANFIS through a sensitivity analysis on the number of neurons and the cluster radius, respectively. Finally, a comparison of ANN and ANFIS models is performed using graphical and statistical analysis. The developed models are tested on an unseen dataset to verify their efficiency. An error metrics analysis, comprising of average percentage error, root mean squared error, and the correlation coefficientis performed. This analysis ranks the respective CI models based on the highest performance efficiency and lowest prediction error. Resultantly, it is observed that the ANN-based model can perform better than the ANFIS model by accurately predicting ROP. The superior performance of ANN is due to its ability to map the complex non-linear interactions of formation and drilling parameters to the resultant ROP.

Abstract Wettability is a key factor influencing oil production, particularly from the oil-wet carbonate reservoirs where the recoveries are often low. This is a serious problem for the oil industry as significant portion of the world's hydrocarbon reserves resides in carbonate formations. Since the wettability has its roots in the inter-molecular interactions between the oil and the mineral, our objectives are, first, to provide the molecular-level understanding of the carbonate wettability and, second, to apply this understanding to devise effective approaches for wettability alteration. Specifically, we focused on chemical additives such as surfactants and ions, which have demonstrated potential as wettability reversal agents. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used as the primary method to study the wettability properties on newly-developed model calcite and dolomite surfaces that mimic experimentally-known mineral properties. Wettability reversal by cationic, anionic, and non-ionic surfactants, as well as by divalent ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, and SO42-) were investigated. A systematic approach for maximizing the surfactant efficiency by tuning the cationic surfactant head-group chemistry was proposed. To validate the MD simulation results, experimental contact angle measurements on dolomite chips were conducted. The MD simulation results demonstrated that, in the absence of asphaltenes, the oil-wetness of the carbonate minerals arises from the electrostatic attraction between the (negatively charged) oil carboxylates and the (positive) surfaces. Due to this electrostatic nature, the wettability could be reversed only by the cationic (positive) surfactants, which screen the oil-surface attraction. Other surfactant types had negligible effect, in agreement with the experimental contact angle measurements. Moreover, the wettability alteration efficiency of the cationic surfactants was directly related to their molecular charge distributions, offering guidelines for the practical design of the most potent wettability-reversing molecules. The simulations of the wettability alteration by Mg2+, Ca2+, and SO42- ions were likewise consistent with the contact angle measurements. The roles of individual ions in the multiple ion exchange (MIE) mechanism were deduced, and the known strong temperature dependence of their wettability alteration effect explained by the stability of the ion hydration shells. Finally, the simulations also exposed differences between the wettability reversal mechanisms on calcite and dolomite minerals, which may have important practical impact. Our results offer a novel perspective on the carbonate wettability and its reversal from the standpoint of atomic-level interactions and molecular mechanisms. New models for the carbonate surfaces were developed for reliable simulations of the wetting properties, which led to new insights into the origins of carbonate oil-wetness and the mechanisms of its reversal in two types of minerals. Lastly, the MD simulations demonstrated their utility as a powerful tool for the practical design and evaluation of potential chemical agents for EOR from carbonate reservoirs.

The convergence and miniaturization of computing and communications dictates building up rather than out. As planar device miniaturization continues to its ultimate limits, the complexity of circuit interconnections for 2-D devices becomes a limitation for performance and drives up power dissipation [1]. As the consumers demand more functions on their hand-held electronic devices, the need for more devices such as memory, CPU and GPU in hand-held type footprints is increasing. Chip-stacking (3-D) is emerging as a powerful tool that satiates such IC package requirements. A 3-D FPGA would overcome the interconnect limitations, resulting in greater silicon efficiency per function (number of used gates/total number of gates), faster signal/data throughput, and faster switching of the gate-level configuration. 3-D through-silicon-via (TSV) technology is being termed as the “next big thing” in the semiconductor arena and has the potential of revolutionizing the packaging industry but it has some inherent issues that need to be addressed before it could be implemented in the mainstream electronics industry. TSV fabrication process, thermal management of 3-D TSV packages, TSV joule heating, and chip package interaction (CPI), are some of the key issues in this technology [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. In this paper, the thermo-mechanical chip-package-interaction (CPI) analysis is carried out and a full field compact 3D modeling methodology has been leveraged to assess the mechanical integrity of a 2 die 3D TSV package during attachment to substrate. This modeling methodology would provide damage predictions caused due to global and local CTE mismatch between the different package components. Mechanical interaction at the Si/TSV regions, back-end Cu/low-k stack, and the inter die μ-bumps during chip attachment is demonstrated in this paper.
