Background Adherence to effective Web-based interventions for common mental disorders (CMDs) and well-being remains a critical issue, with clear potential to increase effectiveness. Continued identification and examination of “active” technological components within Web-based interventions has been called for. Gamification is the use of game design elements and features in nongame contexts. Health and lifestyle interventions have implemented a variety of game features in their design in an effort to encourage engagement and increase program adherence. The potential influence of gamification on program adherence has not been examined in the context of Web-based interventions designed to manage CMDs and well-being. Objective This study seeks to review the literature to examine whether gaming features predict or influence reported rates of program adherence in Web-based interventions designed to manage CMDs and well-being. Methods A systematic review was conducted of peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) designed to manage CMDs or well-being and incorporated gamification features. Seven electronic databases were searched. Results A total of 61 RCTs met the inclusion criteria and 47 different intervention programs were identified. The majority were designed to manage depression using cognitive behavioral therapy. Eight of 10 popular gamification features reviewed were in use. The majority of studies utilized only one gamification feature (n=58) with a maximum of three features. The most commonly used feature was story/theme. Levels and game leaders were not used in this context. No studies explicitly examined the role of gamification features on program adherence. Usage data were not commonly reported. Interventions intended to be 10 weeks in duration had higher mean adherence than those intended to be 6 or 8 weeks in duration. Conclusions Gamification features have been incorporated into the design of interventions designed to treat CMD and well-being. Further research is needed to improve understanding of gamification features on adherence and engagement in order to inform the design of future Web-based health interventions in which adherence to treatment is of concern. Conclusions were limited by varied reporting of adherence and usage data.

Background Development of this guideline was undertaken by the Exercise for People with Cancer Guideline Development Group, a group organized by Cancer Care Ontario’s Program in Evidence-Based Care (pebc). The purpose of the guideline was to provide guidance for clinicians with respect to exercise for patients living with cancer, focusing on the benefits of specific types of exercise, recommendations about screening requirements for new referrals, and safety concerns. Methods Consistent with the pebc’s standardized approach, a systematic search was conducted for existing guidelines, and systematic literature searches were performed in medline and embase for both systematic reviews and primary literature. Content and methodology experts performed an internal review, which was followed by an external review by targeted experts and intended users. Results The search identified three guidelines, eighteen systematic reviews, and twenty-nine randomized controlled trials with relevance to the topic. The present guideline provides recommendations for the duration, frequency, and intensity of exercise appropriate for people living with cancer. It also provides recommendations for pre-exercise assessment, safety concerns, and delivery models. Conclusions There is sufficient evidence to show that exercise provides benefits in quality of life and muscular and aerobic fitness for people with cancer both during and after treatment, and that it does not cause harm. The present guideline is intended to support the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology’s Canadian physical activity guidelines. The recommendations are intended for clinicians and institutions treating cancer patients in Ontario, and for policymakers and program planners involved in the delivery of exercise programs for cancer patients.

Background Although evaluation studies confirm the strong potential of men’s electronic health (eHealth) programs, there have been calls to more fully understand acceptability, engagement, and behavior change to guide future work. Relatedly, mapping of behavior changes using health promotion theories including the transtheoretical model (or stages of change) has been recommended to build a translatable empirical base to advance design and evaluation considerations for men’s eHealth programs. Objective This study aimed to use a benchmark sample as a reference group to map the recent and intended health behavior changes in Canadian men who use the Don’t Change Much (DCM) eHealth program. The hypothesis being tested was that increased exposure to DCM would be positively associated with men’s recent and intended health behavior changes. Methods DCM users (n=863) were sampled for demographic data and self-reported recent and intended health behavior changes. Respondents also reported their usage (frequency and duration) for each of the 3 DCM components (web, newsletter, and social media) and were allocated to limited exposure (257/863, 29.8%), low exposure (431/863, 49.9%), and high exposure (175/863, 20.3%) subgroups. A benchmark sample (n=2000), comprising respondents who had not accessed DCM provided a reference group. Bivariate analysis of recent and intended health behavior changes and DCM exposure levels were used to compute the strength of association between the independent variables (exposure levels) and the 10 categorical dependent variables (recent and intended health behavior changes). Binary logistic regression models were computed for each of the 10 recent and intended health behavior changes. Linear regression was used to model the association between the number of recent and intended changes and the level of exposure to DCM. Results Compared with the benchmark reference group, DCM high-exposure respondents had significantly increased odds for 9 of the 10 health behavior changes, with the largest effect size observed for Changed diet or Improved eating habits (odds ratio [OR] 5.628, 95% CI 3.932-8.055). High-exposure respondents also had significantly increased odds for 9 intended health changes, with the largest effect sizes observed for Reduce stress level (OR 4.282, 95% CI 3.086-5.941). Moderate effect size (goodness of fit) was observed for increased total number of recent (F12,2850=25.52; P.001; adjusted R2=.093) and intended health behavior changes (F12,2850=36.30; P.001; adjusted R2=.129) among high-exposure respondents. Conclusions DCM respondents contrasted the predominately precontemplative benchmark sample mapping across the contemplative, preparation, and action stages of the transtheoretical health behavior change model. Almost 10% of variation in the recent and 13% of variation in the intended health behavior changes can be explained by DCM exposure and demographic factors, indicating the acceptability of this men’s eHealth resource.

Children with gifts and talents benefit from participation in programs grounded in research-based models. Implementation fidelity, however, is a potential moderator of intended benefits. The purpose of this study was to examine one teacher’s fidelity of implementation for Type III Enrichment, an evidence-based gifted education practice and component of Renzulli’s Enrichment Triad Model and Renzulli and Reis’s Schoolwide Enrichment Model. Findings indicated the gifted education teacher implemented Type III Enrichment with fidelity; she adhered to recommended structures and processes, which she skillfully implemented, and student participants were responsive and engaged in the learning process. Audience impact was adversely affected by duration of the one-semester program. In addition, findings indicated the teacher supplemented recommended processes and these supplemental activities influenced student engagement in positive ways.

Abstract Older Latinos engage in low levels of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA). Dance is a culturally appropriate activity which can be used to increase LTPA levels. We examined middle-aged and older Latinos’ satisfaction with the revised BAILAMOS Latin dance program. Healthy and low actives middle-aged and older Latinos (Mage = 64.89±7.08) were randomized to a 4-month dance program (n=167) or health education (n=166). The dance program consisted of four Latin dance styles (Merengue, Bachata, Cha Cha Cha, and Salsa). Classes were held twice a week for one hour. A total of 113 participants completed the program. Participants completed a program evaluation about the 4-months program regarding time, duration, settings, instructor, and overall satisfaction. Items were evaluated on a 1 (strongly disagree/very bad) to 4 (strongly agree/excellent) Likert agreement scale. A total of 73 participants evaluated the 4-month dance program. Participants evaluated the program adequacy agreeing or strongly agreeing as far: time, duration and setting (96-98%); instructor’s enthusiasm, quality of instructions, and eager to help (96-100%); dance program’s progression and enjoyment (93-96%); difficulty level (59%). Participants reported they intended to keep dancing by themselves (93%) and would recommend the program to friends and family (98%). Many participants (88%) reported feeling physically excellent or good as a result of the program, 95% found the program excellent or good, and 100% thought the program was worth their time. Overall, the BAILAMOS program evaluation demonstrated high participants’ acceptability and satisfaction. Those results can promote sustained LTPA and provide initial evidence to translation into community settings.

ABSTRACT The Shoreline Response Program (SRP) is an adjustment within an Incident Management System (IMS) intended to improve current practices. An SRP builds on the recognized strengths of an IMS-based organization and of a SCAT program that utilizes an integrated and focused approach to streamline and better coordinate the decision and planning processes and the operational implementation activities. An SRP is an extension of the traditional SCAT program but with a broader focuses on strategic and tactical planning to minimize the short- and long-term impacts of oil on shorelines, the efforts and costs involved in a shoreline response, and the volumes of waste that would be generated. The inclusion of an SRP concept in drills, exercises and preparedness training can directly improve the ability to respond quickly and effectively during the initial response phase. Not implementing an SRP at the very outset of a spill response, when typically the best opportunities exist for the removal of bulk oil, can have significant long-term consequences. Shifting an emphasis on management and physical resources from, often only partially successful, on-water activities to onshore shoreline activities when oil can be picked up more rapidly and effectively can significantly reduce i) the footprint of the response, ii) the duration and scale of the shoreline operation, iii) the exposure of shore zone resources to the oil, and so accelerate environmental recovery, and iv) waste generation.

Growing of Algae for biodiesel production has gained popularity in recent times. This is becausebiodiesel from algae has an economic advantage over other oil crops. The oil content that can beextracted from microalgae biomass depends on the culture conditions and microalgae species. Thismeans that besides selecting the best microalgae species, it is also necessary to ensure and maintain thebest culture conditions for optimal biodiesel production. Optimum algae growth conditions can be bestbe provided by a Controlled Environment Bioproduction System (CEBS) for the algae called as photo-bioreactor (PBR). This paper reports design and fabrication of a PC based control system for a PBRproduction system for algae being developed at the School of Biosystems and EnvironmentalEngineering (SoBEE) in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Kenya. The control system is intended to ensure that optimum PH, temperature, nutrients content; lightintensity/duration and salinity of growth medium for algae are maintained. The paper covers the designand fabrication of the PC control and monitoring system. The control and monitoring system consists ofa computer program and a microcontroller connected to sensors and actuators. The computer program(master) provides the graphical user interface (GUI) consisting of control buttons and means for realtime data logging and analysis as well as real-time simulation of PBR activities. It is available inexecutable file that can be run in any windows OS computer. The microcontroller program (slave)provides the means for connecting sensors and is used to measure as well as monitor the conditions inthe PBR tanks. Communication between the computer program and the microcontroller is achievedthrough the universal serial bus (USB). The control system consists of both open and closed loopsystems. The open loop system is used to control the light duration at predetermined intervals of time. The closed loop system is used to control the nutrient concentration, light intensity, PH and oxygen:carbon dioxide ratio.

This program of work is intended to develop automatic recognition procedures to locate and assess stuttered dysfluencies. This and the following article together, develop and test recognizers for repetitions and prolongations. The automatic recognizers classify the speech in two stages: In the first, the speech is segmented, and, in the second, the segments are categorized. The units that are segmented are words. Here assessments by human judges on the speech of 12 children who stutter are described using a corresponding procedure. The accuracy of word boundary placement across judges, categorization of the words as fluent, repetition or prolongation, and duration of the different fluency categories are reported. These measures allow reliable instances of repetitions and prolongations to be selected for training and assessing the recognizers in the subsequent paper.

We present a technique for modelling conditional burn probability patterns in two dimensions for large wildland fires. The intended use for the model is strategic program planning when information about future fire weather and event durations is unavailable and estimates of the average probabilistic shape and extent of large fires on a landscape are needed. To model average conditional burn probability patterns, we organised historical fire data from Yellowstone National Park, USA, into a set of grids; one grid per fire. We captured various spatial relationships inherent in the gridded data through use of geometric variables in the main model and by incorporating an autoregressive covariance structure. The final model had ‘good’ predictive ability with an AUC of 0.81 (1.0 is perfect prediction) and the estimated coefficients are consistent with theory and reflect how fires usually behave on the study site landscape. This technique produces a predictive model with finer detail than most landscape-wide models of burn probability and it has advantages over simulation methods for strategic planning because it does not require multiple runs of spread simulation models or information on fire duration.

This dissertation investigates on-market repurchase programs conducted in Australia and explores whether conditions of transparency in the Australian environment are conducive to firms wishing to signal undervaluation of their shares. A sample consisting of 789 programs that are announced over the period 2000 – 2010 are identified and information contained in relevant repurchase disclosures to the market, including program announcements, completion notices and daily trading notices are hand collected for investigation. In this study I examine the share price reaction around the period of a program announcement and the subsequent completion of a program as well as the number of shares repurchased. Share returns are examined by employing an event study methodology and the determinants of the share reaction is established using multiple regression analysis. Tobit regression analysis is employed to investigate the determinants of program completion rates. Results demonstrate that program announcements are accompanied by positive abnormal returns and announcement returns are greater for ‘initial’ programs than for ‘repeat’ programs. Of interest, firms which indicate an unlimited duration earn a greater market response to announcements than firms indicating a fixed period duration. Examination of program completions reveal that completion notices are not accompanied by returns significantly different from zero, a result that is consistent with the notion that they do not impart new information to the market. Examination of announcements demonstrate that the fraction of shares sought or repurchased in a program is not a determinant of announcement returns and firms do not earn a repurchase reputation from prior programs. This finding undermines the importance of program size as a potential cost of false signalling in the Australian environment. Instead, I find evidence that program duration is used by the market as a signal of firm quality. Results demonstrate a negative association between announcement returns and intended program length, consistent with the notion that the shorter the period of time a firm intends to execute a program the more credible a signal to the market that its shares are undervalued. Investigation of completion rates demonstrate that firms are more likely to achieve their repurchase targets if a shorter program length is indicated in an announcement and also the sooner a program is terminated ahead of time. Evidence shows that completion rates are increasing with the range in price a firm pays for its shares and is consistent with the notion that firms repurchase shares out of management’s disagreement with the market over the valuation of its shares rather than to arrest falling share prices. A concern that is often raised in connection with on-market repurchases is that stocks with volatile share prices are particularly suited to firms wishing to acquire shares at ‘cheap’ prices to the benefit of non-selling shareholders, however I find that the transparency of on-market repurchase programs conducted in Australia are effective in deterring firms from engaging in opportunistic behaviour.

This chapter traces South Africa's nuclear posture—how it intended to operationalize and use its six nuclear devices—and explores the sources of that particular strategy. Since 1978, in a very explicit strategy statement outlined by Prime Minister P. W. Botha who held the reins of the South African program for its duration, South Africa clearly envisioned and operationalized a catalytic nuclear posture designed to draw in Western—particularly American—assistance in the event of an overwhelming Soviet or Cuban-backed conventional threat to South Africa through Angola, Namibia, or Mozambique. Given the risk of additional sanctions and isolation if South Africa became an open nuclear power, optimization theory predicts that South Africa would adopt a catalytic posture if it believed it could successfully compel the United States to intervene on its behalf in the face of a severe threat.

Pharyngitis is common with incidence peaking from autumn to spring. Respiratory viruses are most commonly implicated, and are generally self-limiting conditions not requiring diagnostic workup or treatment. Bacterial pharyngitis is less common, is spread by droplets or direct transmission, and Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A strep, or GAS) is the most frequent cause. Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are less frequent causes. Rapid antigen detection tests make the point-of-care assessment of GAS pharyngitis possible, although a negative test does not exclude infection. No method can distinguish oropharyngeal colonization from actual infection, but culture can obtain antibiotic susceptibility testing. Suspicion of infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Bordetella pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, or Corynebacterium diptheriae should be communicated to the laboratory so that the appropriate culture media is utilized. The Centor criteria provide a clinical predictive score that can give the likelihood a sore throat is due to a bacterial infection with the following: the presence of tonsillar exudate, tender anterior cervical adenopathy, fever over 38°C, and absence of cough. If three or four of these criteria are met, the positive predictive value is 40% to 60%. The absence of three or four of the Centor criteria has a relatively high negative predictive value of 80%, and may be use to evaluate whether antibiotics can be withheld or deferred. Oral penicillin or macrolide are used to treat streptococcal pharyngitis. Treatment may reduce severity, duration, transmission, and risk of post-infectious sequelae like rheumatic heart disease and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. Other complications include scarlet fever, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, and quinsy. Otitis media, is frequent in the young children, possibly due to a short and horizontal Eustachian tube. Purulent material buils up leading to a bulging, red tympanic membrane which may rupture and discharge. Intense local pain and fevers may occur. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Haemophilus influenzae are frequently implicated. Frequently there are no sequelae, although complications include hearing impairment, and less common are mastoiditis, bacteraemia, and meningitis. Diagnosis is clinical based on presentation and otoscopic examination. Microbiological diagnosis is possible through culture of exuate on swab or following tympanocentesis.

<em>Abstract.</em>—The San Francisco Estuary is critical habitat for delta smelt <em>Hypomesus transpacificus</em>, a fish whose abundance has declined greatly since 1983 and is now listed as threatened. In addition, the estuary receives drainage from the Central Valley, an urban and agricultural region with intense and diverse pesticide usage. One possible factor of the delta smelt population decline is pesticide toxicity during vulnerable larval and juvenile stages, but pesticide concentrations are not well characterized in delta smelt spawning and nursery habitat. The objective of this study was to estimate the potential exposure of delta smelt during their early life stages to dissolved pesticides. For 3 years (1998–2000), water samples from the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta were collected during April–June in coordination with the California Department of Fish and Game’s delta smelt early life stage monitoring program. Samples were analyzed for pesticides using solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Water samples contained multiple pesticides, ranging from 2 to 14 pesticides in each sample. In both 1999 and 2000, elevated concentrations of pesticides overlapped in time and space with peak densities of larval and juvenile delta smelt. In contrast, high spring outflows in 1998 transported delta smelt away from the pesticide sampling sites so that exposure could not be estimated. During 2 years, larval and juvenile delta smelt were potentially exposed to a complex mixture of pesticides for a minimum of 2–3 weeks. Although the measured concentrations were well below short-term (96-h) LC50 values for individual pesticides, the combination of multiple pesticides and lengthy exposure duration could potentially have lethal or sublethal effects on delta smelt, especially during early larval development.

Short-duration facilities have been used for the past thirty-five years to obtain measurements of heat transfer, aerodynamic loading, vibratory response, film-cooling influence, purge flow migration, and aeroperformance for full-stage high-pressure turbines operating at design corrected conditions of flow function, corrected speed, and stage pressure ratio. This paper traces the development of experimental techniques now in use at The Ohio State University (OSU) Gas Turbine Laboratory (GTL) from initial work in this area at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory (CAL, later to become Calspan) in 1975 through to the present. It is intended to summarize the wide range of research that can be performed with a short-duration facility and highlight the types of measurements that are possible. Beginning with heat-flux measurements for the vane and blade of a Garrett TFE 731-2 HP turbine stage with vane pressure-surface slot cooling, the challenge of each experimental program has been to provide data to aid turbine designers in understanding the relevant flow physics and help drive the advancement of predictive techniques. Through many different programs, this has involved collaborators at a variety of companies and experiments performed with turbine stages from Garrett, Allison, Teledyne, Pratt and Whitney, General Electric Aviation, Rocketdyne, Westinghouse, and Honeywell. The Vane/Blade Interaction measurement and CFD program, which ran from the early eighties until 2000, provided a particularly good example of what can be achieved when experimentalists and computational specialists collaborate closely. Before conclusion of this program in 2000, the heat-flux and pressure measurements made for this transonic turbine operated with and without vane trailing edge cooling flow were analyzed and compared to predictive codes in conjunction with engineers at Allison, United Technologies Research Center, Pratt and Whitney, and GE Aviation in jointly published papers. When the group moved to OSU in 1995 along with the facility used at Calspan, refined techniques were needed to meet new research challenges such as investigating blade damping and forced response, measuring aeroperformance for different configurations, and preparing for advanced cooling experiments that introduced complicating features of an actual engine to further challenge computational predictions. This required conversion of the test-gas heating method from a shock-tunnel approach to a blowdown approach using a combustor emulator to also create inlet temperature profiles, the development of instrumentation techniques to work with a thin-walled airfoil with backside cooling, and the adoption of experimental techniques that could be used to successfully operate fully cooled turbine stages (vane row cooled, blade row cooled, and proper cavity purge flow provided). Further, it was necessary to develop techniques for measuring the aeroperformance of these fully cooled machines.

The extended loss of AC power (ELAP) event can pose a significant challenge to the integrity of the Reactor Coolant System (RCS) in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). To mitigate the consequences of this event, it is important to maintain adequate coolant inventory and the associated heat removal capability of the RCS. A critical RCS component in maintaining RCS inventory is the Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP) seals. To ensure seal integrity, the RCP seals are either independently cooled by back-up systems or are sufficiently robust to maintain their integrity without cooling until such time when cooling may be restored. A number of new RCP seal designs have been proposed by seal manufacturers to meet this challenge. This paper focuses on one such design, namely, the KSB Station Blackout (SBO) seal package. KSB RCP seals were first introduced in the nuclear industry in the 1970s. The original KSB RCP seals, designated as HDD-254 Type A, consisted of a three stage hydrodynamic design with each stage capable of retaining full RCS pressure. The Type A seals were initially installed in the Combustion Engineering (CE) Palo Verde units and in several reactors in Germany. In the 1980s, these seals were replaced with the Type C seals that incorporated several design improvements. These seals have been successfully installed and operated in over 100 RCPs in Europe, South America, South Korea, and China. These seals continue to demonstrate excellent operating experience with typical replacement interval of 4 to 6 years. Although the reliability of the Type C seals has been excellent based on operating experience, the seal was not specifically designed for coping with an ELAP event that might ensue following an SBO. In order to support the emerging needs of nuclear industry in response to Fukushima, KSB embarked on a seal design improvement program directed towards retaining the high operational reliability of the Type C seal while enhancing the RCP seal package’s high temperature coping capability. This activity resulted in a new seal package design that includes: (1) an advanced high temperature resistant, three stage, Type F seal, (2) a passive thermal check valve (PTCV) intended to passively isolate the RCP controlled bleed-off (CBO) line to maintain RCS inventory, and (3) a back-up fourth stage shaft seal called the “Stand-still” seal. This paper discusses the design and post-accident performance of KSB’s Type F hydrodynamic RCP seal package with emphasis on seal performance capabilities under ELAP conditions. The report concludes that the capability of the primary three stage hydrodynamic seals and the fourth stage “Stand-still” seal to function at high temperatures coupled with the reliable RCP CBO line closure capability and subsequent RCS depressurization ensures that any potential seal leakage would be held to a minimum (less than 2 gpm) for the duration of a 72 hour ELAP scenario. The ELAP coping strategies and their outcomes were validated by a seal test program conducted at KSB’s testing laboratories in Frankenthal, Germany. The results of the tests confirmed that the Type F seals exhibited extremely low leakage rates (∼0.01 gpm) at conditions representative of an ELAP scenario (120 hours up to 300 °C [572 °F] temperature and 160 barg [2320 psig] pressure).

AEC Pipelines Ltd operates approximately 2500 km of pipeline within Canada and the United States. The AEC Pipelines Ltd. “Pipeline Integrity Group” has responsibility for monitoring and ensuring the continuing safety and reliability of the AEC Pipelines Ltd. pipeline system network within Canada and the U.S. In carrying out this mandate, the Integrity Group is required to develop and manage large scale pipeline rehabilitation programs involving the assessment and repair of a variety of pipeline defects, including external corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). One such rehabilitation program involves the 435-km length Alberta Oil Sands Pipeline (AOSPL) that transports Synthetic Crude product from the Syncrude Plant located at Fort McMurray to Edmonton, Alberta. This AOSPL pipeline is of spiral weld construction, the pipe joints are externally coated with extruded polyethylene (Shaw YJ1), and the girth welds are externally coated with polyethylene tape wrap. Pipeline outside diameter is 559 mm, nominal wall thickness is 5.16 mm (Gr. 359 and Gr. 414) and heavy wall pipe thickness is 6.35 mm or 7.92 mm (Gr. 359 or Gr. 414). The pipeline, constructed in 1978, exhibits extensive corrosion and minor SCC at the girth weld locations due to tape wrap coating disbondment and resultant cathodic protection shielding. The four hundred and thirty five (435) km length of pipeline has been excavated and repaired at approximately twenty six hundred (2600) girth weld locations since 1986 including approximately eleven hundred (1100) sites during the last two years. Major sections of this pipeline may be accessed and excavated only during the winter months. Several crews adhering to an intense work schedule must be utilized in order to complete the necessary number of pipeline repairs within such a short time frame. The employment of a large number of technical specialists for short duration dictates that contract personnel must be utilized within key project supervisory positions. In 1996, in order to ensure a continuity of critical contract personnel and reduce third party costs, AEC Pipelines Ltd. initiated the formation of a three-year Integrity Alliance involving all of the major contractors working on the AOSPL rehabilitation program. The formation of this Integrity Alliance has resulted in significant program cost reductions and has promoted a “team” approach to rehabilitation projects. In order to minimize the risk of injury to pipeline rehabilitation project personnel and to provide standards for quality control, the AEC Pipelines Ltd. Integrity Group, in concert with the Integrity Alliance, developed the “The Pipeline Integrity Group Rehabilitation Training and Certification Program”. The program applies to both on-site personnel and visitors and comprises the following individual training and certification approaches: 1. Pipeline Integrity Group Rehabilitation Program Risk Assessment and Safety Guidelines. 2. Pipeline Integrity Group Rehabilitation Training and Certification Program for NDE Personnel. 3. Pipeline Integrity Group Rehabilitation Training and Certification Program for Clock Spring™ Sleeve Applicators. 4. Pipeline Integrity Group Rehabilitation Training and Certification Program for Alberta One Call Response and Field Representation. These quality control certification and safety training programs are in addition to the many Integrity Alliance specifications that have been developed as a guideline for carrying out critical activities on the pipeline; i.e. pipeline excavation, pipeline re-coating and pipeline grind removal of SCC.

The Bologna process involved a strategic change that included in its policy agenda a move towards a student-centred scenario. In addition, a reasonable association may be assumed to exist between teaching development programmes and student learning outcomes. This research study focused on the impact that a brief yet intense formal and non-qualifying teaching programme, delivered as a seminar and supported by the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in Spain, had on teachers’ approaches to teaching measured by the most recent Spanish adaptation of the Approaches to Teaching Inventory (S-ATI-20). Results showed that there was a positive and statistically significant impact of the training programme on approaches to teaching measured by the information transmission/teacher-focused scale (ITTF). The poor attendance rate to this non-compulsory programme, course duration, participant profile, psychometric structure of the questionnaire used, and the relationship between teaching development programmes and approaches to teaching are discussed.

In Australia, 6000 military personnel leave the military each year, of whom at least 30% become unemployed and 19% experience underemployment, figures five times higher than the national average (Australian Government 2020). Believed to be one of life's most intense transitions, veterans find it difficult to align their military skills and knowledge to the civilian labour market upon leaving military service (Cable, Cathcart and Almond 2021; AVEC 2020). // Providing authentic opportunities that allow veterans to gain meaningful employment upon (re)entering civilian life raises their capability to incorporate accrued military skills, knowledge, and expertise. Despite acknowledging that higher education is a valuable transition pathway, Australia has no permanently federally funded post-service higher education benefit supporting veterans to improve their civilian employment prospects. Since World War II, American GIs have accessed a higher education scholarship program (tuition fees, an annual book allowance, monthly housing stipend) (Defense 2019). A similar offering is available in Canada, the UK, and Israel. // We are proposing that the AVSP would be the first comprehensive, in-depth study investigating the ongoing academic success of Australia's modern veterans as they study higher and vocational education. It consists of four distinct components: // Scholarships: transitioning/separated veterans apply for one of four higher education scholarship options (under/postgraduate): 100% tuition fees waived // $750/fortnight living stipend for the degree duration // 50/50 tuition/living stipend // Industry-focused scholarships. // Research: LAS Consulting, Open Door, Flinders University, over seven years, will follow the scholarship recipients to identify which scholarship option is the most relevant/beneficial for Australian veterans. The analysis of the resultant quantitative and qualitative data will demonstrate that providing federal financial support to student veterans studying higher education options: Improves the psychosocial and economic outcomes for veterans // Reduces the need for financial and medical support of participants // Reduces the national unemployed and underemployed statistics for veterans // Provides a positive return of investment (ROI) to the funder // May increase Australian Defence Force (ADF) recruitment and retention rates // Career Construction: LAS Consulting will sit, listen, guide, and help build an emotional connection around purpose, identity, education and employment opportunities back into society. So, the veteran can move forward, crystalise a life worth living, and find their authentic self, which is led by their values in the civilian world. // Mentoring: Each participant receives a mentor throughout their academic journey.

One of the main goals of severe accident management strategies is to mitigate radiological releases to people and environment. To choose the most appropriate strategy, one needs to know the probability of its success taking into account the associated uncertainties. In the field of corium and debris behavior and coolability, research programs are still on going and the possibilities to efficiently cool and retain corium and debris inside the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) then inside the containment are difficult to evaluate. This leads to uncertainties in safety assessments particularly when margins to RPV or containment failure are too weak. In Vessel Melt Retention (IVMR) strategies for Light Water Reactors (PWR, BWR, VVER) intend to stabilize and retain the core melt in the RPV (as it happened during the TMI-2 accident). This would reduce significantly the threats to the last barrier (the containment) and therefore reduce the risk of release of radioactive elements to the environment. This type of Severe Accident Management (SAM) strategy has already been incorporated recently in the SAM guidance (SAMG) of several operating medium size Light Water Reactors (reactor below 500MWe (like VVER440)) and is part of the SAMG strategies for some Gen III+ PWRs of higher power like the AP1000. A European project coordinated by IRSN and gathering 23 organizations (Utilities, Technical Support Organizations, Nuclear Power Plant vendors, Research Institutes…) has been launched in 2015 with as main objective the evaluation of feasibility of IVMR strategies for Light Water Reactors (PWR, VVER, BWR) of total power around 1000MWe (which represent a significant part of the European Nuclear Power Plants fleet). This paper intends to show how it is possible to introduce transient evolutions of the stratified corium pool in the evaluation of the heat flux profile along the vessel wall. Indeed, due to chemical reactions in the U–Zr–O–Fe molten pool, separation between non-miscible metallic and oxide phases may occur, modifying the thermal load applied to the RPV. If stabilized stratified corium configurations are well defined and modeled, transient evolutions of material layers in the corium pool are still difficult to predict. The evaluations presented are based on calculations performed with the severe accident integral code ASTEC (Accident Source Term Evaluation Code) for a typical PWR reactor. The modeling of transient evolution of corium layers leads to configurations with a thin light metal layer on top of the oxidic one, increasing the so called “focusing effect” (intense heat fluxes on the RPV walls adjacent to the top metal layer). A sensitivity study on some uncertain parameters is proposed to evaluate the impact on the kinetics of layers inversion. Depending on the duration of these transient heat fluxes, the mechanical strength of the RPV could be challenged.
