We present the experimental procedure and the results for traction, with unloading, reloading and relaxation in monotonous and cyclic conditions. This work is also concerned with the measure in real time of the volume strain due to the phenomena of damage. The results are given for various orientations of specimen within the extruded plates. The thermodynamic modeling of the whole the results, is the subject of an original development leading to the unified prediction of measures in 3D: axial true stress, transverse true strains. The model also predicts the development of the damage and offer the possibility to introduce a tensorial damage variable. The identification of the model parameters on the basis of experimental data leads to physical quantities in conformity with the characteristics of the microstructure. This work opens the prospect for an enrichment of the thermodynamic approach in the direction of the prediction of the induced plastic anisotropy of semi-crystalline polymers

Повний текст джерелаHigh-temperature heat storage processes using thermochemical solid/gas reaction exhibit great interest for applications in solar thermodynamic power plants. The reactive pair CaO/Ca(OH)2 is suitable for this recovery step application ranging from 350 to 550°C within steam pressures from 0.2 to 2 bar. Heat and mass transfer Ca(OH)2+GNE beds parameters were evaluated through correlations and experimentations. Experiments achieved recovery reaction powers above 200kW.m-3 for compatible durations with solar power plants (1 to 15 hours). A 2D model was developed, validated and exploited to study the coupled influences of different parameters on the performance of TCS. Finally, the benefit of different configurations of TCS integration within the solar power plant have been highlighted in terms of thermal performances and sources and sinks power exchanges

Повний текст джерелаA reliable power supply is crucial for operating power systems. Defined as the ability of power systems to lock back into a steady-state condition after sudden disturbance (e. G. Load or production fluctuations), reliability is usually ensured through appropriate management of voltage and frequency and involves events whose time scales range from a few milliseconds to a few hours. However, energy planning models, which focus on power systems' long-term development (typically several decades), largely ignore reliability requirements and may consequently provide unrealistic options in this area. Yet this aspect is of tremendous importance, especially when high shares of renewable energy sources, and in particular intermittent energy sources, are expected in electricity production and may threaten supply reliability. To overcome this drawback, we propose assessing the reliability of supply when evaluating power systems' long-term development. We achieve a global description of power systems relying on variational principles deduced from thermodynamics. The approach provides two reliability indicators related to the dynamic properties of the whole system, namely the magnetic and kinetic reserves available in the system, thus quantifying in an original way the reliability of power supply for a given production mix. The relevance of the indicators is demonstrated through a prospective analysis of Reunion Island, which is targeting an electricity production mix with 100% renewable energy sources by 2030. We use a TIMES model to provide the electricity sector's responses to this scenario and to different assumptions. Results show that the levels of magnetic and kinetic reserves decrease with the integration of renewable energy sources, and that the levels of the reserves are critically low during the day, when intermittent energy sources can represent up to two thirds of the electricity production. This work thereby illustrates how we can use the two indicators to debate the most appropriate conditions for ensuring the reliability of supply, and makes it possible to choose between the targets of decarbonizing the electricity mix and maintaining an expected level of reliability

Повний текст джерелаThe development of energy harvesting systems is linked to the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and especially the proliferation of Wireless Sensors Networks that should respond to the growing needs for monitoring data in domains as diverse as the industry, the urban or natural environments, the home, or the human body etc. Recent progress in the field of information technologies have enabled to remove some of the technical obstables to the deployment of these smart and autonom devices, in particular thanks to the improvement of the performances of microelectronic components, the design of ultra-low-power circuits, or the creation of wireless communications standards adapted to the energy needs of wireless sensors. Given the great availability of energy sources, energy harvesters are reliable alternatives to batteries in order to extend the autonomy of these sensors. Various technologies of generators have been developped to adapt to the type of local energy sources (heat, vibration, light, radio-frequencies).The present work is a contribution to the development of thermal energy harvesters exploting the thermal and mechanical properties of bimetal thermostats. This type of technology developped at STMicroelectronics are intended to be a reliable and low-cost alternative to the use of thermoelectric materials exploing Seebeck effect to generate electricity from heat. Various devices were already fabricated at the macro-scale, demonstrating their ability to power wireless sensor nodes. In the continuity of these works, this PhD thesis aims to demonstrate the operation of these generators at the sub-millimetric scale. As a consequence, an important work on the modeling of the thermo-mechanical instability of bimetallic strips was made to understand the operation of bimetallic strip heat engines. This work enabled to theoretically demonstrate the capability of bimetallic to transform heat into mechanical energy and to evaluate the performances of such heat engines. Coupling between bimetallic strip heat engines and electro-mechanical transducers was also modeled to compare the performances of the current prototypes of generators. We then modeled the thermo-mechanical behavior of composite beams at the microscale and established scaling rules of the performances of the bimetallic strip heat engines, We finally developped microlectronic fabrication process to manufacture thermo-mechanically bistable beams at the microscale

Повний текст джерелаCurrently, most heat pump(HP) manufacturers provide coefficient of performance (COP) values obtained in laboratories under standardized controlled operating conditions. These COP values are not necessarily representative of those obtained on-field. A promising method, referred to as the performance assessment method, that measures heat pump performances in-situ based on compressor energy balance, was presented by Tran et al. (2013). The method determines refrigerant mass flow rate and has the capability of measuring performances of various HP types, such as air-to-air, as well as more complex refrigeration cycles. The method abstains from intrusive measurements, and is, therefore, perfectly suitable for in-situ measurements. As shown in the work of Tran et al. (2013), compressor heat losses account for 40% in the final uncertainty of performance values obtained with the performance assessment method. The objective of this thesis is to establish a rather simplified measurement method, in terms of instrumentation, that is used to determine compressor heat losses in-situ. For this purpose two detailed numerical models for assessing the temperature fields of the scroll and rotary compressor shells were developed. Experimental measurements obtained with the help of compressor manufacturer, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), are used to validate and calibrate the numerical models. The developed numerical models allow to define two different measurement protocols for both compressors. Established compressor heat loss protocol for rotary compressor is then integrated in the performance assessment method and the obtained heating capacities are compared with reference measurements in an experimental test bench in EDF Lab Les Renardières

Повний текст джерелаThe energy issue is becoming increasingly important for the industrial sector, which consumes a considerable amount of energy. In spite of the fact that the scientific community should continue to seek alternative energy sources, a short-term option would be to rely on more reasonable energy consumption. To address this difficulty, exergy and exergoeconomic analysis looks to be very effective techniques since it allows industrial operations to be more efficient while also reducing their environmental impact and maximize the economic benefits. In this context, the major objective of the study presented in this dissertation is to improve the energy efficiency of the existing cogeneration plant for further possibilities of electricity generation improvement to supply to the national grid system from surplus bagasse and also to demonstrate the value of this approach for analysis of energy efficiency of processes and utilities. Moreover, promoting advanced integrated technology for the conversion of available sugarcane byproducts (bagasse, molasses, and filter cake) to alternative energy indicators (bioethanol, alkane, and syn-gas or synthesis gases) for economic benefit and to alleviate the environmental load from the depilation of wastes especially in the downstream area. This dissertation presents a generic technique for energy balancing in thermal processes coupling with ProSimPlus® process simulator proved to be well-suited for energy efficiency studies in a cogeneration plant. This study fully automates exergy analysis by presenting the entire exergy balance within a single piece of software in addition to employing general expressions for work and heat streams. Furthermore, three operating scenarios (case I - both the “Grid” and the “Factory” operating simultaneously, Case II – the grid operates and the factory “OFF”, and Case III – the grid “OFF” and the factory “ON” scenarios) have been used to examine the exergy and exergoeconomic analyses of a cogeneration facility.Because of the unpredictability of the energy market in terms of availability and pricing, selecting the appropriate operating mode to balance feasibility and profitability of chemical processes has become a hot subject in the industrial arena. Choosing the optimal operating setup is crucial for the stability of a process plant, especially when the grid supply is not constant. The ProSim Plus® process simulator was used to create a digital twin of the steam turbine cogeneration section on the utility side of the Wonji-Shoa sugar mill in Ethiopia, using actual data. Moreover, a steam power plant was simulated in a ProSimPlus ® simulator, and operating parameters of the steam turbine were analyzed utilizing the exergy concept with a pinch-based technique. The Combined Pinch and Exergy Analysis (CPEA) initially analyses the depiction of the Hot and Cold Composite Curves (HCCCs) of the steam cycle and specifies the energy and exergy requirements. The fundamental assumption of the minimal approach temperature difference (〖∆T〗_lm) necessary for the pinch analysis is represented as a unique exergy loss that raises the heat demand (heat duty) for power generation. On the other hand, the exergy composite curves focus on the potential for fuel saving throughout the cycle having opportunities for heat pumping in the process. Finally, a conceptual design that considers the criteria to identify the upper theoretical limits of biomass conversion to enhance the potential approach to the conversion of sugarcane byproducts into energy indicators forwarded. In order to analyze the biomass carbon-capturing potential, the model assessment of stoichiometric mass conversion and energy efficiency indicators were formulated. Modeling plays up the importance of stoichiometric efficiency of biomass conversion into multi-product diversification of feedstock within integrated process schemes could have the potential to fill the energy gap and to manage environmental load

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis is dedicated to exploring the phase diagram of gold under high pressure and high temperature. Calculating the free energy is fundamental for comparing the relative stability of phases under specific thermodynamic conditions. However, this quantity explicitly depends on the partition function, making it challenging to calculate in atomistic simulations. It is often decomposed into cold and thermal contributions. Among these contributions, the lattice dynamics, or phonons, play a crucial role. The temperatures explored induce indeed anharmonic effects, necessitating the use of expensive ab initio methods, based on density functional theory (DFT) which are the most appropriate method to account for these effects that existing empirical potentials cannot reproduce. Coupled with thermodynamic integration, it is the reference method for calculating free energy. However, this method remains very time-consuming and is thus prohibitive to explore the whole phase diagram of gold. Alternative methods exist, such as the quasi-harmonic approximation, but its validity at high temperature is difficult to assess. The goal of this thesis is to propose a method that maintains DFT accuracy while reducing computation time. To achieve this, an accelerated sampling procedure using machine learning is employed. This procedure allows for the training of surrogate potentials, which are then used a posteriori to extract the Gibbs free energies of the considered structures via a non-equilibrium thermodynamic integration calculation. The results obtained have been validated by comparison with those from the temperature-dependent effective potential. In the first part, this approach was applied to construct the phase diagram of solid gold from 0 to 1 TPa and up to 10,000 K. It shows the stabilization of a body-centered cubic (bcc) phase at high temperatures, around 200 GPa. An explanation for the cubic face-centered (fcc)-bcc transition before melting was proposed, based on the effects of interatomic force constants. Furthermore, the stability domains of the fcc and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phases predicted by this study are in good agreement with most recent experimental results. In the second part, this procedure was extended to calculate the melting curve of gold
