This work systematically investigates when and how combining speech output and visual text may facilitate processing and comprehension of sentences. It is proposed that a redundant multimodal presentation of speech and text has the potential for improving sentence processing but also for severely disrupting it. The effectiveness of the presentation is assumed to depend on the linguistic complexity of the sentence, the memory demands incurred by the selected multimodal configuration and the characteristics of the user. The thesis employs both theoretical and empirical methods to examine this claim. At the theoretical front, the research makes explicit features of multimodal sentence presentation and of structures and processes involved in multimodal language processing. Two entities are presented: a multimodal design space (MMDS) and a multimodal user model (MMUM). The dimensions of the MMDS include aspects of (i) the sentence (linguistic complexity, c.f., Gibson, 1991), (ii) the presentation (configurations of media), and (iii) user cost (a function of the first two dimensions). The second entity, the MMUM, is a cognitive model of the user. The MMUM attempts to characterise the cognitive structures and processes underlying multimodal language processing, including the supervisory attentional mechanisms that coordinate the processing of language in parallel modalities. The model includes an account of individual differences in verbal working memory (WM) capacity (c.f. Just and Carpenter, 1992) and can predict the variation in the cognitive cost experienced by the user when presented with different contents in a variety of multimodal configurations. The work attempts to validate through 3 controlled studies with users the central propositions of the MMUM. The experimental findings indicate the validity of some features of the MMUM but also the need for further refinement. Overall, they suggest that a durable text may reduce the processing cost of demanding sentences delivered by speech, whereas adding speech to such sentences when presented visually increases processing cost. Speech can be added to various visual forms of text only if the linguistic complexity of the sentence imposes a low to moderate load on the user. These conclusions are translated to a set of guidelines for effective multimodal presentation of sentences. A final study then examines the validity of some of these guidelines in an applied setting. Results highlight the need for an enhanced experimental control. However, they also demonstrate that the approach used in this research can validate specific assumptions regarding the relationship between cognitive cost, sentence complexity and multimodal configuration aspects and thereby to inform the design process of effective multimodal user interfaces.

In questa tesi saranno usate tecniche di deep learning per affrontare unodei problemi più difficili dell’elaborazione automatica del linguaggio naturale:la generazione automatica di riassunti. Dato un corpus di testo, l’obiettivoè quello di generare un riassunto che sia in grado di distillare e comprimerel’informazione dall’intero testo di partenza. Con i primi approcci si é provatoa catturare il significato del testo attraverso l’uso di regole scritte dagliumani. Dopo questa era simbolica basata su regole, gli approcchi statistici hanno preso il sopravvento. Negli ultimi anni il deep learning ha impattato positivamente ogni area dell’elaborazione automatica del linguaggionaturale, incluso la generazione automatica dei riassunti. In questo lavoroi modelli pointer-generator [See et al., 2017] sono utilizzati in combinazionea pre-trained deep contextualized word embeddings [Peters et al., 2018]. Sivaluta l’approccio sui due più grossi dataset per la generazione automaticadei riassunti disponibili ora: il dataset CNN/Daily Mail e il dataset Newsroom. Il dataset CNN/Daily Mail è stato generato partendo dal dataset diQuestion Answering pubblicato da DeepMind [Hermann et al., 2015], concatenando le frasi di highlight delle news e formando cosı̀ dei riassunti multifrase. Il dataset Newsroom [Grusky et al., 2018] è, invece, il primo datasetesplicitamente costruito per la generazione automatica di riassunti. Comprende un milione di coppie articolo-riassunto con diversi gradi di estrattività/astrattività a diversi ratio di compressione.L’approccio è valutato sui test-set con l’uso della metrica Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation (ROUGE). Questo approccio causa un sostanzioso aumento nelle performance per il dataset Newsroom raggiungendo lo stato dell’arte sul valore di ROUGE-1 e valori competitivi per ROUGE-2 e ROUGE-L.

In a large urban school system located in a metropolitan city in the southeastern United States, third- and fifth-grade minority students in Title I elementary schools are performing below proficiency in social studies on the statewide standardized assessments. The lack of exposure to the social studies curriculum continues to hinder minority students from successfully comprehending complex informational text, which is important to their success in the newly adopted Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the problem teachers faced with an insufficient amount of time for teaching social studies content and the recent requirement to increase student exposure to informational text. The research used Lev Vygotsky's theory of social constructivism to provide a framework for the methods used in this paper. To address these problems, this study explored two third-grade and two fifth-grade language arts teachers' perceptions of integrating social studies text during their reading-language arts block. Further, the study observed teachers as they integrated social studies text to teach reading. Data for this case study were compiled from interviews, observations, and focus group discussions. The data were reviewed and coded to identify major themes and were then analyzed to generalize data findings. Teachers reported integrating social studies text afforded them the opportunity to maximize instructional time, teach the CCSS, and expose students to more informational text. Implications for positive social change include enabling teachers to identify the benefits of integrating social studies text during reading-language arts instruction and enabling minority students to increase their scores on the statewide social studies assessment.

The amount of biomedical literature available is increasing at an exponential rate and is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate. Text-mining methods can potentially mitigate this problem, through the systematic and large-scale extraction of structured information from inherently unstructured biomedical text. This thesis reports the development of four text-mining systems that, by building on each other, has enabled the extraction of information about a large number of published statements in the biomedical literature. The first system, LINNAEUS, enables highly accurate detection ('recognition') and identification ('normalization') of species names in biomedical articles. Building on LINNAEUS, we implemented a range of improvements in the GNAT system, enabling high-throughput gene/protein detection and identification. Using gene/protein identification from GNAT, we developed the Gene Expression Text Miner (GETM), which extracts information about gene expression statements. Finally, building on GETM as a pilot project, we constructed the BioContext integrated event extraction system, which was used to extract information about over 11 million distinct biomolecular processes in 10.9 million abstracts and 230,000 full-text articles. The ability to detect negated statements in the BioContext system enables the preliminary analysis of potential contradictions in the biomedical literature. All tools (LINNAEUS, GNAT, GETM, and BioContext) are available under open-source software licenses, and LINNAEUS and GNAT are available as online web-services. All extracted data (36 million BioContext statements, 720,000 GETM statements, 72,000 contradictions, 37 million mentions of species names, 80 million mentions of gene names, and 57 million mentions of anatomical location names) is available for bulk download. In addition, the data extracted by GETM and BioContext is also available to biologists through easy-to-use search interfaces.

Identifying the boundary between relevant and irrelevant objects in text classification is a significant challenge due to the numerous uncertainties in text documents. Most existing binary text classifiers cannot deal effectively with this problem due to the issue of over-fitting. This thesis proposes a three-way decision model for dealing with the uncertain boundary to improve the binary text classification performance by integrating the distinct aspects of three-way decisions theory and the capacities of the Support Vector Machine. The experimental results show that the proposed models outperform baseline models on the RCV1, Reuters-21578, and R65CO datasets.

Suffix Tree Clustering (STC) is a search result clustering (SRC) algorithm focused on generating overlapping clusters with meaningful labels in linear time. It showed the feasibility of SRC but in time, subsequent studies introduced description-first algorithms that generate better labels and achieve higher precision. Still, STC remained as the fastest SRC algorithm and there appeared studies concerned with different problems of STC. In this thesis, semantic relations between cluster labels and documents are exploited to filter out noisy labels and improve merging phase of STC. Wikipedia is used to identify these relations and methods for integrating semantic information to STC are suggested. Semantic features are shown to be effective for SRC task when used together with term frequency vectors. Furthermore, there were no SRC studies on Turkish up to now. In this thesis, a dataset for Turkish is introduced and a number of methods are tested on Turkish.

This dissertation aims to discover synergistic combinations of top-down (ontologies), interactive (relevance feedback), and bottom-up (machine learning) knowledge encoding techniques for text mining. The strength of machine learning techniques lies in their coverage and efficiency because they can discover new knowledge without human intervention. The output, however, is often imprecise and irrelevant. Human knowledge, top-down or interactively encoded, may remedy this. The research question addressed is if knowledge discovery can become more precise and relevant with hybrid systems. Three different combinations are evaluated. The first study investigates an ontology, the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), combined with an automatically created thesaurus to dynamically adjust the thesaurus' output. The augmented thesaurus was added to a medical, meta-search portal as a keyword suggester and compared with the unmodified thesaurus and UMLS. Users preferred the hybrid approach. Thus, the combination of the ontology with the thesaurus was better than the components separately. The second study investigates implicit relevance feedback combined with genetic algorithms designed to adjust user queries for online searching. These were compared with pure relevance feedback algorithms. Users were divided into groups based on their overall performance. The genetic algorithm significantly helped low achievers, but hindered high achievers. Thus, the interactively elicited knowledge from relevance feedback was judged insufficient to guide machine learning for all users. The final study investigates ontologies combined with two natural language processing techniques: a shallow parser and an automatically created thesaurus. Both capture relations between phrases in biomedical text. Qualified researchers found all terms to be precise; however, terms that belonged to ontologies were more relevant. Parser relations were all precise. Thesaurus relations were less precise, but precision improved for relations that had their terms represented in ontologies. Thus, this integration of ontologies with natural language processing provided good results. In general, it was concluded that top-down encoded knowledge could be effectively integrated with bottom-up encoded knowledge for knowledge discovery in text. This is particularly relevant to business fields, which are text and knowledge intensive. In the future, it will be worthwhile to extend the parser and also to test similar hybrid approaches for data mining.

This dissertation examines genericity from a textual perspective. The material consists of popular science texts about species of animals. The investigation concerns both the distribution of different forms of generic noun phrases and the boundary between generic and non-generic noun phrases. The analytical tools are taken from Accessibility Theory and Blending Theory. Two separate studies have been undertaken. The results of the first study indicate that generic reference on the whole follows the same principles of accessibility as non-generic reference, although there are some differences that can be attributed to the distinction between generic and non-generic reference. Some results suggest that our mental representations of generic referents are generally less accessible than those of non-generic referents. Factors other than accessibility influencing the choice of generic noun phrases are also identified. While genericity is generally treated as an all-or-nothing phenomenon, an important experience of this first study concerns the difficulties facing anyone who tries to distinguish between generic and non-generic noun phrases in authentic texts. These difficulties are the centre of attention in the second study, which shows that genericity is an extremely context-dependent phenomenon. The sentence context may clearly indicate a particular, non-generic reference, while the wider context of the text reveals that the noun phrase in question is in fact generic. Not infrequently, chains of reference involve a great deal of shifting and slithering between a generic and a non-generic meaning, although the references are seemingly coreferential. It is sometimes difficult to decide on the real referents intended. At times there are also clear cases where the noun phrase must be analysed as referring to both generic and non-generic entities at the same time. This implies that it is unlikely that we actually decide for every reference if it is generic or non-generic.

A document organization is a collection of documents composed of labeled clusters that contain similar documents. In any information system, a collection of documents always changes as time goes, since users access the collection to delete, add, and update documents. Dynamic Document Organization is a document organization that adapts automatically to such variable document collections. DDO poses two challenges, because of the decentralized mode of access. First, some clusters may have many documents, while others may have very few. Second, documents belonging to new topics may be added to the information system very often. Considering these two points, we need to reorganize the collection of documents, even if it was organized previously. Both text categorization and text clustering are limited when implementing DDO (Dynamic Document Organization) individually. Text categorization requires the manual preliminary tasks of the predefinition of a classification system and the preparation of sample labeled documents. Text clustering generates only unnamed clusters alone; each cluster should be labeled, manually by scanning contained documents. Therefore, this dissertation proposes approaches to the implementation of DDO that combined text clustering, cluster identification, and text categorization.

Writing is necessary to participate in public discourse. Much of today's communication is based on information, yet many students do not adequately learn how to write expository text. Learning to write is difficult, but expository text can be especially difficult as it requires knowledge of both a subject and special text structures. The purpose of this study was to give teachers a research-proven method for teaching students to write expository text and to give more information on how to evaluate students' writing. In this quasi-experimental quantitative research design, the expository writing of students before and after receiving a new science and literacy integrated curriculum combined with specific expository writing instruction was compared. Participants included 71 second-grade students and 3 teachers from a suburban public elementary school in a Mountain West state. Students came from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. Measures included a holistic rubric that measured statement of purpose/focus and organization and conventions/editing, and an analytic rubric that measured introductions, facts on the topic, conclusions, word count, and the language mechanics of punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. A paired-samples t test of total scores from the holistic rubric showed statistically significant improvement pre-instruction to post-instruction (p < .001, two tailed). A paired-samples t test of total weighted scores from the analytic rubric also showed statistically significant improvement between pre-instruction and post-instruction (p < .001, two tailed). Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests were used to examine the individual elements of each rubric. All rubric elements showed statistically significant improvement except for three elements of the analytic rubric: topic introduction (p = .664), concluding statement (p = .916), and spelling (p = .299). Findings indicated that teachers could use the instruction to successfully teach students to develop content knowledge about an expository topic and write expository text based on that knowledge. The ranks of scores for each rubric were also examined to see how the scores varied based on which rubric was used. The holistic rubric had fewer positive and negative ranks than the analytic rubric, and the holistic rubric had more tied ranks than the analytic rubric. It was therefore determined that the rubrics did not score similarly. Holistic rubrics give an overall impression while analytic rubrics allow the scorer to see the areas in which students excel and the areas which need improvement. Therefore, teachers and researchers should consider their purpose for scoring writing and use the rubric that will appropriately meet that purpose.

Integrating hardware in simulations is useful in many applications, for example to investigate the performance of an aircraft with the non-ideal response of a physical system. This thesis aims to integrate a flight simulator, JSBSim, with an actuator test rig, FLUMES Iron Bird. Two aircraft models were replicated in JSBSim, a passenger aircraft and a delta winged fighter aircraft. The models were analyzed to ensure proper flight performance in regards to stability. The stability analysis was conducted from both the aerodynamic data provided as well as through state-space theory. The fighter aircraft was unstable in the subsonic region and in need of a flight control system to fly properly. The integration with the test rig was implemented using Simulink S-functions and a real-time target computer ensuring synchronous communication with the actuator test rig. The passenger aircraft was successfully integrated and tested with the actuator test rig.

Integreringen med testriggen utfördes i Simulink med hjälp av S-funktioner och en realtidsdator för att garantera synkronisk kommunikation mellan flygsimulatorn och testriggen. Det modellerade passagerarflygplanet kunde integreras och testas med testriggen.

The comprehension of illustrations and text was studied from a cognitive discourse processing perspective. Typically, learners must construct conceptual knowledge representations that integrate different types of information from diverse sources and modalities (e.g., text and illustrations). Currently, little is known about how such integrative processing works in "multimedia" learning situations. This study focused on the semantic representations that low prior knowledge learners constructed as they read from text and static illustrations presenting multiple types of information (structural, functional, and energy) describing a functional system. Both the text and the illustrations were modified so that structural information would be highlighted over other information types.
Participants were twenty-four undergraduate engineering students who had little prior knowledge of the target domain (the human visual system), but were experienced in learning about functional systems using texts and illustrations. Six students were randomly assigned to each of four presentation conditions: (a) text only, (b) illustrations only, (c) text with controlled access to illustrations, or (d) text with free access to illustrations.
The materials were presented individually in a computer environment which recorded and timed all information accessed. Participants provided on-line interpretations as they read, post-input verbal and visual free recalls of the materials, and responses to integrative comprehension questions. Planned comparisons were used to contrast: (a) the two text with illustrations groups, (b) the combined text with illustrations groups to the text only group, (c) the text with illustrations groups to the illustrations only group, and (d) the processing of information which was privileged (structure) to other information.
The results indicated that the text and illustrations each provided mutually constraining information that functioned together to support comprehension. Illustrations aided the construction and elaboration of mental models by providing an external context that supported more active conceptual processing and integration of information. Text aided both literal and high level comprehension by communicating the meaning of illustrations and signaling what information was important. These results support perspectives on situated learning which emphasize the role that discourse plays in comprehending knowledge in environments involving more than one external information source. Future research is recommended to extend such findings to other populations of learners and materials.

This dissertation is the result of a five months internship experience at Akka Technologies S.r.l which is the final client of A. T. Company. A. T. is a well-known railway and railway infrastructure construction sector (Transport Division) with SCMT project performed in collaboration with the Akka Technologies S.r.l. Company decided to introduce the Verification and Validation within its development process and contacted experts from the university to implement industrially feasible strategies to address this goal. The work presented here reports on the results achieved in the context of this collaboration. This project defines Software Integration Test for Railway Control systems for the Italian Rail Traffic Management System (On Board System), and Software integration test which is derived from V & V model. Its testing phase (Software Testing) which is top-down integration test. Integration test is testing where individual components are combined with other components to make sure the correct communication. ADA language is programmed for input Documents. This system and the software is according to the software safety integrity level 4 (SIL 4) railway norms EN 50128. CI (Continuous Integration) is a software development practice which became more and more popular in last decade. Ericsson followed the trends and used CI several years. Because of the complexity of RBS (Radio Base Station) software few levels of CI have been implemented there. In RCS (RBS Control System) module CI there are many automatic JCAT (Java Common Auto Tester) test loops running every day and some of them failed. This thesis tries to find a way to classify these test failures automatically, so efficiency and lead time can be improved. Two methods are presented and investigated in this report, rule matching and machine learning. After analysis and comparisons rule matching approach is selected because it does not require huge effort in the initial phase and rule matched data can be used as labeled data for machine learning. This approach requires manual work to add new rules continuously but with correctly defined rules the accuracy is 100%, if the rule is general it can classify one type of issue including the ones which never happen before. One analysis system is designed and implemented, and only small update is required to the result report block of the CI flow. One matching example is showed and according to estimation this method could save many man hours every year.

A especificação formal de um sistema ou seu modelo formal é uma forma abstrata de representar suas propriedades (características). Métodos formais é um ramo da Engenharia de Software com foco no desenvolvimento de sistemas tendo uma especificação formal do mesmo como ponto de partida. Inicialmente, as vantagens de usar notações abstratas antes da implementação do sistema estavam apenas relacionadas a um melhor entendimento do problema. Depois, tornou-se evidente que o uso de notações formais abstratas combinadas com técnicas de refinamentos de modelos reduzem o tempo de desenvolvimento e aumentam a qualidade do produto de sistema. A fase de testes é positivamente influenciada pelo uso de métodos formais. Pesquisas têm sido desenvolvidas para melhorar a qualidade do sistema usando modelos formais e casos de teste. Uma vez verificadas as propriedades do sistema através de uma investigação dos modelos formais, é possível gerar casos de testes confiáveis do sistema que serão colocados em ação para verificar a implementação do sistema posteriormente. O campo de pesquisa que explora métodos formais aplicados com testes de software é chamada de Testes Baseados em Modelos, ou simplesmente MBT, do inglês Model-Based Testing. Porém, há situações onde não é possível possuir o modelo abstrato definido a priori. Para superar tal restrição outras técnicas surgiram para sintetizar um modelo abstrato seguindo apenas execuções do sistema. As execuções de um sistema contêm comportamentos necessários para construir um modelo abstrato desse sistema. Na literatura atual, tais técnicas usadas para construir representações abstratas seguindo execuções do sistema são chamadas de Anti-Model- Based Testing ou simplesmented Anti-MBT. Então, depois de construir um modelo abstrato, técnicas de verificação de modelos e geração de casos de teste seguindo modelos formais podem ser aplicadas normalmente. O propósito desse trabalho é dar suporte a algumas técnicas de MBT usadas no contexto da Motorola (CIn/BTC). Em tais técnicas, as especificações usadas para gerar casos de testes são geralmente incompletas, inconsistentes, e às vezes não existem. Portanto, usando casos de testes reais do sistema é possível criar novas especificações e atualizar especificações originais do sistema, e posteriormente gerar novos casos de teste usando comportamentos válidos do sistema. Um outro problema detectado em nosso contexto é a distância existente entre as representações abstratas e reais. Um caso de teste abstrato, por exemplo, é útil em técnicas formais, mas não é possível executar um caso de teste diretamente no sistema. Dessa forma, para executar (manualmente ou automaticamente) os casos de teste gerados pelas técnicas de MBT é necessário primeiro traduzi-los em uma representação real. Como resultado desse trabalho nós desenvolvemos técnicas formais de modelagem do comportamento do sistema usando casos de teste. Os resultados das técnicas de modelagem são modelos formais especificados nos formalismos de LTS ou CSP. Além disso, nós definimos uma técnica de unificação que une modelos formais gerados a partir de diferentes artefatos do sistema (requisitos e casos de teste). O resultado da técnica de unificação é um completo e unificado modelo do sistema, que contém informações providas de diferentes artefatos. Nós também definimos uma técnica para traduzir casos de teste abstratos em representações reais. Os casos de teste reais gerados por nossa técnica de tradução são usados no contexto do time de automação de testes da Motorola, onde esse trabalho está inserido. Finalmente, nós automatizamos as técnicas desenvolvidas usando linguagens de programação e especificações formais. O resultado é a ferramenta TCRev que é capaz de modelar, unificar e traduzir modelos do sistema. A ferramenta TCRev interage com o outras ferramentas externas, tais como FDR e FDR Explorer. Increasingly organizations are leveraging service oriented architectures (SOA) as the core infrastructure on which their business applications and processes are organized. The testing and debugging of applications within a SOA presents special challenges. A defect observed at the level of user interaction with the application could be: (1) a fault (performance, security, scalability, etc.) in the application or process logic; (2) a fault in any of the services used by the application; (3) an unintended interaction in combining services. The key challenge to be faced is how to ensure that organizations can manage the complexity of their composite applications and service-oriented architecture in a manner that addresses the engineering requirements of testing while providing tools that are efficient, productive, and reasonable for testers to learn. In our thesis we address these issues by introducing a 'grey box' test agent architecture and a model-driven approach to express 'grey box' test campaigns.

Ericsson AB is a world-leading provider of telecommunications equipment and services to mobile and fixed network operators. Ericsson uses continuous integration testing to ensure that their equipment is top tier market products. The Ericsson WCDMA division has one older Erlang based software testing framework called ART and a newer Java based framework called JCAT. This thesis work aims to find a solution for JCAT to execute ART tests and evaluate and log the test results in JCAT. This report describes the research results in executing ART from JCAT, gathering ART test case result data and sending it back to JCAT as well as a describing a proof of concept implementation using the research results. The suggested solution runs the ART tests by executing a Bash script. The communication was solved by using an event handler which gathers data from the ART tests and sends it back to JCAT using Erlang node communication. The result is a solution which satisfies the requirements specified. If the implementation were to be used in a production environment it would still need some future work.

The current paradigm for data acquisition and recording systems for flight test applications does not meet today's demand for high reliability and timing performance. Such systems are better served through a network-based approach that can provide the capacity at which systems must acquire, record, process, and telemeter data. As with any complex system, this approach does have challenges. This paper describes the methods used to develop a network-centric flight test system, including simulators, IEEE 1588 time synchronization, network message protocols, and addresses the integration issues involved such as network topology and reliable latency-bounded throughput. Solutions used in overcoming these integration issues in previous system designs are also presented.

Software testing generally suffers from time and budget limitations. Indiscriminately executing all available test cases leads to sub-optimal exploitation of testing resources. Selecting too few test cases for execution on the other hand might leave a large number of faults undiscovered. Test case selection and prioritization techniques can lead to more efficient usage of testing resources and also early detection of faults. Test case selection addresses the problem of selecting a subset of an existing set of test cases, typically by discarding test cases that do not add any value in improving the quality of the software under test. Test case prioritization schedules test cases for execution in an order to increase their effectiveness at achieving some performance goals such as: earlier fault detection, optimal allocation of testing resources and reducing overall testing effort. In practice, prioritized selection of test cases requires the evaluation of different test case criteria, and therefore, this problem can be formulated as a multi-criteria decision making problem. As the number of decision criteria grows, application of a systematic decision making solution becomes a necessity. In this thesis, we propose a tool-supported framework using a decision support system, for prioritizing and selecting integration test cases in embedded system development. The framework provides a complete loop for selecting the best candidate test case for execution based on a finite set of criteria. The results of multiple case studies, done on a train control management subsystem from Bombardier Transportation AB in Sweden, demonstrate how our approach helps to select test cases in a systematic way. This can lead to early detection of faults while respecting various criteria. Also, we have evaluated a customized return on investment metric to quantify the economic benefits in optimizing system integration testing using our framework.

The Clock Drawing Test (CDT) is a medical test for neurodegenerative diseases that has been proven to have high diagnostic value due to its ease of administration and accurate results. In order to standardize the administration process and utilize the most current machine learning tools for analysis of CDT results, the digitizing pen has been used to computerize this diagnostic test. In order to successfully integrate digitizing pen technology with the CDT, a digit recognition algorithm was developed to reduce the need for manual classification of the data collected and maintain the ease of administration of the test. In addition, the Multitool Data Analysis Package was developed to aid in the exploratory data analysis stage of the CDT. This package combines several existing machine learning tools with two new algorithm implementations to provide an easy-to-use platform for discovering trends it CDT data.

I mitten av 2000-talet gjorde Svenska dagbladet en granskning där tidningen kom fram till att läroböcker spred schablonbilder av invandrare. Det fanns flera undersökningar som visade att även om de negativa bilderna av invandring och invandrare hade tonats ner var böckerna inte klanderfria i sina skildringar. Eftersom jag anser att det är viktigt att läroböckerna inte sprider fördomar och negativa bilder av invandringen som kan leda till att den ökande främlingsfientligheten i vårt samhälla får mer näring, ville jag undersöka hur läroböckerna skildrade invandrare och invandring. I min undersökning valde jag att granska samhällskunskapsböcker på gymnasienivå. Jag valde att granska tre olika böcker och två upplagor av varje bok. En upplaga som kom före 2006 och en upplaga som kom efter 2006. Denna indelning i två perioder gjordes för att undersöka om läroboksförlag och läromedelsförfattare förändrade innehållet under den andra perioden eftersom både medier och forskning hade uppmärksammat problemet med skildringarna av invandringen och invandrare. Mina resultat stämmer överens med tidigare forskning. De visar att det inte förekommer rasistiska eller andra nedvärderande beskrivningar av invandrarna. Däremot knyts invandringen och invandrarna till problem och läroböckernas skildringar av invandringen och invandrare är sällan positiva. Min undersökning visar att de granskade läroböckernas skildringar av invandrare och invandring är något mer negativ under den andra undersökta perioden än den var under den första undersökningsperioden.

Lunar Prospector’s project engineering staff selected a Windows PC platform as the RF test console for the Lunar Prospector spacecraft. The spacecraft test team chose the PCbased RF test console because the PC provides a low-cost, common platform with a graphical user interface. The PC provides point-and-click, menu-driven windows that are common throughout the satellite factory. The PC RF test console is being used to exercise the Lunar Prospector spacecraft RF link for RF commanding, telemetry, and ranging signals during factory test, including thermal vacuum chamber testing. For spacecraft command and control at the factory, the PC-based RF test console is networked to a UNIX workstation over RS-422. The PC RF test console and spacecraft interface are controlled through a coax switch residing in a test rack next to the workstation. The PC RF test console is connected directly to the Lunar Prospector spacecraft using coax cable through the spacecraft Telemetry, Commanding, & Ranging (TC&R) RF antenna hat for both transmit and receive functions. The PC RF test console is also connected hard-line to the spacecraft transponder through the transponder RS-422 connection. This connection provides the ability for spacecraft telemetry to be received at the PC at RF or baseband. The same hard-line spacecraft telemetry data is provided to the UNIX workstation for comparison. NASA’s Lunar Prospector project is the first of the Discovery series of “faster, better, cheaper” missions to be competitively awarded. Lunar Prospector project funding was capped by NASA to ensure that no overruns would occur. The mission was funded to support the scientific community’s desire to verify the presence of ice on the moon and collect environmental data to understand the dynamics that may have led to polar ice deposits. The Lunar Prospector mission received funding in 1996 with a launch planned for September 1997

Naturally fractured reservoirs (NFR) represent an important percentage of the worldwide hydrocarbon reserves and production. Reservoir simulation is a fundamental technique in characterizing this type of reservoir. Fracture properties are often not available due to difficulty to characterize the fracture system. On the other hand, well test analysis is a well known and widely applied reservoir characterization technique. Well testing in NFR provides two characteristic parameters, storativity ratio and interporosity flow coefficient. The storativity ratio is related to fracture porosity. The interporosity flow coefficient can be linked to shape factor, which is a function of fracture spacing. The purpose of this work is to investigate the feasibility of estimating fracture porosity and fracture spacing from single well test analysis and to evaluate the use of these two parameters in dual porosity simulation models. The following assumptions were considered for this research: 1) fracture compressibility is equal to matrix compressibility; 2) no wellbore storage and skin effects are present; 3) pressure response is in pseudo-steady state; and 4) there is single phase flow. Various simulation models were run and build up pressure data from a producer well was extracted. Well test analysis was performed and the result was compared to the simulation input data. The results indicate that the storativity ratio provides a good estimation of the magnitude of fracture porosity. The interporosity flow coefficient also provides a reasonable estimate of the magnitude of the shape factor, assuming that matrix permeability is a known parameter. In addition, pressure tests must exhibit all three flow regimes that characterizes pressure response in NFR in order to obtain reliable estimations of fracture porosity and shape factor.

Object-oriented software systems contain a large number of modules which make the unit testing, integration testing, and system testing very difficult and challenging. While the aim of the unit testing is to show that individual modules are working properly and the aim of the system testing is to determine whether the whole system meets its specifications, the aim of integration testing is to uncover errors in the interactions between system modules. Correct functioning of object-oriented software depends upon the successful integration of classes. While individual classes may function correctly, several faults can arise when these classes are integrated together. However, it is generally impossible to test all the connections between modules because of time and cost constraints. Thus, it is important to focus the testing on the connections presumed to be more error-prone. The general goal of this research is to let testers know where in a software system to focus when they perform integration testing to save time and resources. In this work, we propose a new approach to predict and rank error-prone connections in object-oriented systems. We define method level metrics that can be used for test focus selection in integration testing. In addition, we build a tool which calculates the metrics automatically. We performed experiments on several Java applications taken from different domains. Both error seeding technique and mutation testing were used for evaluation. The experimental results showed that our approach is very effective for selecting the test focus in integration testing.

Object-oriented software systems contain a large number of modules which make the unit testing, integration testing, and system testing very difficult and challenging. While the aim of the unit testing is to show that individual modules are working properly and the aim of the system testing is to determine whether the whole system meets its specifications, the aim of integration testing is to uncover errors in the interactions between system modules. Correct functioning of object-oriented software depends upon the successful integration of classes. While individual classes may function correctly, several faults can arise when these classes are integrated together. However, it is generally impossible to test all the connections between modules because of time and cost constraints. Thus, it is important to focus the testing on the connections presumed to be more error-prone.
