Intersection traffic congestion evaluation is essential for effective intelligent transportation system planning, and an objective and precise assessment of traffic congestion is vital to ensure the smooth circulation of traffic. Multiple criteria decision-making is a method for evaluating the degree of traffic congestion. A hybrid multiple criteria decision-making method integrating the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, techniques for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution, and gray correlation techniques are presented in this work. The proposed method applied fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to determine the weight of the evaluation index; subsequently, gray correlation techniques for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution were integrated to construct the hybrid decision-making method. A case study of traffic congestion at intersections with five evaluation indexes verified the effectiveness of the hybrid method. The evaluation results of the different methods show that the proposed method overcomes the one-sidedness of analytical hierarchy process–techniques for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution and analytical hierarchy process–gray correlation. Thus, the proposed hybrid decision-making model provides a more accurate and reliable method for evaluating the degree of traffic congestion.

Evaluation of educational programs and assessment of learning are essential to maintain high-standard health science education, which includes pain education. Current models of program evaluations applied to the education of the health professions, such as the Kirkpatrick model, are mainly outcome based. More recently, efforts have been made to examine other process-based models such as the Context Input Process Product model. The present article proposes an approach that integrates both outcome- and process-based models with models of clinical performance assessment to provide a deeper understanding of a program function. Because assessment instruments are a critical part of program evaluation, it is suggested that standardization and rigour should be used in their selection, development and adaptation. The present article suggests an alternative to currently used models in pain education evaluation.

This paper presents the findings of second phase of study on physics students’ critical thinking. This study was performed on a cohort of 25 (i.e., 13 females and 12 males) Physics with Electronics students from School of Science and Technology at University Malaysia Sabah. The sample was trained by an integrated Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method for 1 semester (i.e., 14 weeks). Participants’ critical thinking was evaluated using a previously validated instrument, the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) (i.e., inference; assumption; deduction; interpretation; evaluation arguments). The result shows that there is significant different in inference criteria (sig2-tailed, t=5.57, p=.00<*.05) favor to the first post test.

Purpose In the context of sequential multistage utilitarian service processes, the purpose of this study is to develop and validate propositions to study the impact of service quality (SQ) perceptions developed in intermediate stages, along with the impact of service gestalt characteristics, such as peak and end experiences, on quality perception at each stage and on overall service quality (OSQ) perception. The cascade phenomenon (interdependency between process stages) is considered in the evaluation of OSQ perception of customer, who experiences service through a series of planned, distinct and partitioned sequential stages. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, a conceptual framework is used to evolve the propositions. Subsequently, propositions are tested in three different utilitarian service contexts wherein customer survey was conducted for feedback on attributes at each stage, summary perception evaluations of each stage and OSQ evaluation of multistage process. Peak experiences, considered for OSQ evaluation, were defined by a suitable statistical technique. Ordinal logistic regression with nested models is the technique used for analyzing the data. Findings This work reveals significant cascade effect of summary evaluation of intermediate stages on the subsequent stage. Peak customer experience (negative or positive) is observed to be marginally significant on intermediate stage and OSQ evaluation. In addition, OSQ is observed to be influenced by summary perception evaluations of intermediate stages, which leads to better model adequacy. Finally, among all the stages, end stage performance is observed to have a significant impact on the overall multistage SQ. Practical implications The findings suggest that in view of the cascade effect of intermediate stages, managers need to allocate resources to ensure that all stages are performing at an adequate level instead of only focusing on improving peaks and end effects of customer experiences. The proposed approach is easy to implement and suitable for evaluating SQ and OSQ in varied multistage sequential utilitarian service environment. Originality/value An integrated approach for evaluation of SQ in sequential multistage utilitarian service processes is proposed from the perspective of cascade effect of intermediate stages and peak and end effects on OSQ perception.

The approach method used in this study is an evaluative approach, where the researcher intends to collect data on policy implementation. The evaluation model chosen in this study is the Discrepancy Evaluation Model (DEM), by collecting and using observations, structured interviews and documentation. The design of the integrated islamic school network curriculum is a combination of the content of the integrated islamic school network curriculum, the content of the national curriculum and local content. the integrated islamic school network curriculum places more emphasis on internalizing Islamic values in every content of the National curriculum. Implementation with good and correct worship habits becomes a reinforcement in the development of student character. Implementation of the JSIT curriculum, but all of this must be a perception of thinking and acting by providing self-development and training or web wins for HR at SDIT Harum. Discrepancy evaluation is one type of evaluation approach in evaluating a integrated islamic school network curriculum program. The results of this evaluation are to find out the gaps that occur between the expected conditions and the reality in the field, the next step in making decisions.

In this study the texture profile, total soluble solids (TSS) and the fruit skin colour of four day-neutral strawberry cultivars cultivated in Italy (‘Anabelle’, ‘Murano*’, ‘Portola*’ and ‘Triumph’) was evaluated at four harvest times. The interrelationships of the analysed parameters were determined using principal component analysis in order to suggest the best commercial scenario (local market, supermarket retailer or export) for each cultivar. Data analysis related to texture and TSS contents revealed that ‘Anabelle’, ‘Portola*’ and ‘Murano*’ displayed unique characteristics, and that ‘Triumph’ showed lower values for these parameters. Due to its low hardness and cohesiveness values ‘Anabelle’ could be suited to a short supply chain; ‘Portola*’, meanwhile, might meet the requirements of a long supply chain, due to its high hardness and low TSS (P £ 0.05); ‘Murano*’ could be distinguished from the other cultivars by its high luminosity (ranging from 41.46–46.21 L*); while ‘Triumph’, due to its darkness (36.83–37.13 L*), could be suitable for a local/farmers’ market.

This paper, using goal programming (GP) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), proposes an integrated methodology to aid decision makers in (1) evaluating, screening and selecting best suppliers from among an exhaustive list of available suppliers and (2) determining the amount to be purchased from the selected suppliers. Along the supply chain, the suppliers, by being situated at the upstream of the chain, play a crucial role in successful management of the entire (subsequent) members of the chain and can have a significant impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of the activities of the rest of the chain, and ultimately, on the delivery of the desired products/services. Thus supplier selection can certainly contribute greatly to a firm's competitive advantage and its organizational success. This study suggests a screening and evaluation method, named supplier priority index matrix, to eliminate the least qualified suppliers and to choose the most promising ones. The remaining potential suppliers are evaluated and the best are selected from among them. Finally the AHP and GP are used to allocate the firm's total supplies among the chosen/selected suppliers.

Enterprises are confronted with several project alternatives that they assume to gain revenue in the future, but their own economical resources are limited to carry out all alternatives. Therefore, a decision process arises to prioritize and select among alternatives according to the predetermined goals and criteria to reach the maximum utilization. On the other hand, in project evaluation, the values of project parameters are often assumed to be known with complete certainty. However, project parameters normally change during a life cycle of the project, and it is necessary to consider uncertainty and risk phenomena while evaluating projects. Simulation-based project evaluation approaches enable to make more reliable investment decision since they permit to include future uncertainty and risk in analysis process. In this article, a novel simulation-based optimal decision approach is proposed for evaluating and comparing investment projects under uncertain and/or risky environments. The phases of the proposed approach are; (a) developing the effectiveness measure formulation of a project, (b) identifying and checking all controllable project parameters that affect the measure, (c) developing simulation model for the measure, and (d) performing the project ranking and selection procedures in order to rank and select the projects. Three ranking and selection procedures, previously used for comparing performances of the different production/service systems, are embedded in the proposed approach.

Abstract Track, intensity, and, in some cases, size are usually used as separate evaluation parameters to assess numerical model performance on tropical cyclone (TC) forecasts. Such an individual-parameter evaluation approach often encounters contradictory skill assessments for different parameters, for instance, small track error with large intensity error and vice versa. In this study, an intensity-weighted hurricane track density function (IW-HTDF) is designed as a new approach to the integrated evaluation of TC track, intensity, and size forecasts. The sensitivity of the TC track density to TC wind radius was investigated by calculating the IW-HTDF with density functions defined by 1) asymmetric, 2) symmetric, and 3) constant wind radii. Using the best-track data as the benchmark, IW-HTDF provides a specific score value for a TC forecast validated for a specific date and time or duration. This new TC forecast evaluation approach provides a relatively concise, integrated skill score compared with multiple skill scores when track, intensity and size are evaluated separately. It should be noted that actual observations of TC size data are very limited and so are the estimations of TC size forecasts. Therefore, including TC size as a forecast evaluation parameter is exploratory at the present. The proposed integrated evaluation method for TC track, intensity, and size forecasts can be used for evaluating the track forecast alone or in combination with intensity and size parameters. As observations and forecasts of TC size become routine in the future, including TC size as a forecast skill assessment parameter will become more imperative.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop comprehensive criteria for evaluating fashion design schemes and used an integrated model which considers the interrelation between the clusters of evaluation and the influence between criteria for evaluating alternative fashion design schemes. Design/methodology/approach The integrated approach uses the advantages of all three methods: the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) can be used to analyse the interrelations between the major clusters of fashion design evaluation. The analytical network process can calculate the criterion weight that is adjusted based on the influence between different elements in the decision framework. The Visekriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) determines the best fashion design by ranking a set of designs by using ten conflicting criteria. Findings Style is the decisive dimension because it is highly affected by other clusters. The comfort of the style is the most crucial criterion. “Veracious” is the best and most preferred design scheme. Originality/value The study develops the decisive cluster and criteria in designing a fashion design scheme. The proposed approach can be used as a decision analysis tool in fashion design and other fields and has various advantages (e.g. considering interrelations between clusters and influences between criteria, and ranking a set of alternatives), and therefore, is appropriate for practical circumstances.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework for evaluating and selecting the most optimal third-party logistics (3PL) service provider vendor among the available ones. Selection is done based on the performance values of the vendors on certain predefined criteria. Design/methodology/approach An integrated approach involving data envelopment analysis (DEA), technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and linear programming (LP) problem has been used to develop a new model for the selection of 3PL vendor. First, DEA is used to evaluate the efficiency of each vendor according to the identified criteria. Second, TOPSIS is applied to rank the maximally efficient vendors. Finally, LP problem is stated and solved to ascertain the quantities to be allocated to each maximally efficient vendor in the context of multiple logistics provider. The proposed DEA–TOPSIS–LP (DETOLP) model is finally tested with real-time industry data for 3PL vendor evaluation and selection. The study, thus, proposes a three-step hierarchical technique for selection of 3PL vendor based on the multiple criteria decision-making approach. Findings The paper focuses on assessing the performance of 26 vendors using a combined approach of DEA, TOPSIS and LP. It is observed that vendor V4 outperforms all the considered vendors, which exactly corroborates with the present scenario within the company. Research limitations/implications Exclusion of qualitative criteria for 3PL vendor selection and the judgment of weights for TOPSIS can be considered as the limitations of the present work. The study has significant practical implications for organizations belonging to any sector or industry. It can help them in evaluating the existing 3PL vendors and selecting the most efficient among them. Originality/value This paper deals with a framework modeled for 3PL vendor selection. It is the first attempt to utilize an integrated approach, i.e. DETOLP model for evaluation and selection of 3PL. For assessment of the model, real data from an Indian company has been taken to analyze the result and compare it with the present scenario within the company.

Recycling municipal solid waste has become a challenging task for municipalities. Appropriate recycling efficiency evaluations are, thus, essential to find practical benchmark learning targets for inefficient municipal solid waste authorities (MSWAs). This study developed a recycling performance evaluation procedure by subgrouping MSWAs with prominent local demographic features, such as population density, ratio of senior citizens, tourism index etc. Principal recycling relevant factors for MSWAs in each group were then collected, and data envelopment analysis (DEA) was applied for efficiency evaluation and benchmark learning targets. A case study of 181 MSWAs in Taiwan demonstrated the suitability of the proposed procedures. An assessment of the required efforts for efficiency improvements revealed that, in an unsegregated scenario, inefficient MSWAs representing a rural subgroup required maximum efforts to fulfill the efficiency targets, which was on average 61% higher than that determined in their respective subgroup. Furthermore, the unsegregated scenario revealed proximal efficiency results for the urban subgroup. The results indicated that consideration of local demographic features was essential for a fair assessment of recycling efficiency. Additionally, evaluating MSWAs with similar local demographic features was superior in obtaining appropriate benchmark learning targets for the inefficient MSWAs and, consequently, exhibited practicality for improving walkthroughs to achieve the efficiency goal.

The model employs four criteria (economic development, flood control security, water supply security, and water environment security) and has 22 indicators, integrating them using their relative weights. The model is applied to evaluate the water security of Wuhan urban agglomeration, China. The values of the indicators are normalized using the exponential efficacy functions based on the law of diminishing marginal utility. The evaluation results show that, overall, the state of water security in Wuhan urban agglomeration is good, which is in good agreement with the true situation. The comparison between the results of the model and other three evaluation methods by the Spearman coefficient of rank correlation verifies the science and reliability of the developed model. Consequently, it is concluded that the model can be an effective tool for evaluating the states of water security and provide a basis on which to create policies for improving inadequacies in water security.

Background. Integrated community-wide intervention approaches (ICIAs) are implemented to prevent childhood obesity. Programme evaluation improves these ICIAs, but professionals involved often struggle with performance. Evaluation tools have been developed to support Dutch professionals involved in ICIAs. It is unclear how useful these tools are to intended users. We therefore researched the facilitators of and barriers to ICIA programme evaluation as perceived by professionals and their experiences of the evaluation tools. Methods. Focus groups and interviews with 33 public health professionals. Data were analysed using a thematic content approach. Findings. Evaluation is hampered by insufficient time, budget, and experience with ICIAs, lack of leadership, and limited advocacy for evaluation. Epidemiologists are regarded as responsible for evaluation but feel incompetent to perform evaluation or advocate its need in a political environment. Managers did not prioritise process evaluations, involvement of stakeholders, and capacity building. The evaluation tools are perceived as valuable but too comprehensive considering limited resources. Conclusion. Evaluating ICIAs is important but most professionals are unfamiliar with it and management does not prioritise process evaluation nor incentivize professionals to evaluate. To optimise programme evaluation, more resources and coaching are required to improve professionals’ evaluation capabilities and specifically the use of evaluation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology to test the robustness of energy performance of highly to fully glazed office buildings in hot and arid climates using the net energy figures. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a methodology to develop a base-case model for building energy simulation (BES) of highly to fully glazed office buildings followed by sensitivity analysis (linear regression model) to test the robustness of the results. Findings Net energy is best achieved on south, followed by southeast, and southwest façadesof the bulding; the increase in d/l ratio has a diverse effect, while there is a significant influence of glazing systems on the resultant net energy figures. Research limitations/implications The lack of experimental data for Integrated Façade System (IFS) with its various applications in the existing body of knowledge forms the main limitation of this research. Practical implications Findings can be of practical use to practitioners and academics to assist them as a decision tool when working on the energy performance of IFS. Social implications The research contributes to energy consumption reduction in office building stock at peak times, lowering the consequent energy shortage and blackouts for non-office buildings with clear positive social impacts. Originality/value Adopting a systemic approach in BES studies will help further the understanding on the impact of some phenomena and justify how the contributory parameters would behave when combined effects are under investigations.

Purpose Neuromarketing, which is an interdisciplinary area, concentrates on evaluating consumers’ cognitive and emotional reactions to different marketing stimuli. In spite of advantages, neuromarketing still requires development and lacks a strong theoretical framework. Techniques that are used in neuromarketing studies have different superiorities and limitations, and thus, there is a need for the evaluation of the relevance of these techniques. The purpose of this study is to introduce a novel integrated approach for the neuromarketing research area. Design/methodology/approach The proposed approach combines 2-tuple linguistic representation model and data envelopment analysis to obtain the most efficient neuromarketing technique. It is apt to handle information provided by using both linguistic and numerical scales with multiple information sources. Furthermore, it allows managers to deal with heterogeneous information, without loss of information. Findings The proposed approach indicates that functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is the best performing neuromarketing technology. Recently, fMRI has been widely used in neuromarketing research. In spite of its high cost, its main superiorities are improved spatial and temporal resolutions. On the other hand, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and positron emission tomography (PET) are ranked at the bottom because of their poor resolutions and lower willingness of participants. Originality/value This paper proposes a common weight data envelopment analysis (DEA)-based decision model to cope with heterogeneous information collected by the experts to determine the best performing neuromarketing technology. The decision procedure enables the decision-makers to handle the problems of loss of information and multi-granularity by using the fusion of 2-tuple linguistic representation model and fuzzy information. Moreover, a DEA-based common weight model does not require subjective experts’ opinions to weight the evaluation criteria.
