The number of company acquisitions in recent years has been increasing every year (Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliances, IMAA). At the same time, as research and analysis show, it is increasingly difficult to obtain employees for the organization. According to Manpower in 2016 as many as 40% of all respondents in the world declared problems in finding employees, while in 2014 there were 36% of them. There is also an increase in the value of the valuation of intangible assets. As a result of these activities, an increasingly common phenomenon of acquiring key resources to the company appeared by buying a company to acquire high-skilled employees, called acqui-hiring. The article characterizes the phenomenon on the example of global and national experience of enterprises and shows future challenges.

We at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke routinely receive questions and statements from trainees and faculty that suggest widespread beliefs about the necessity of a National Institutes of Health K99/R00 award, other prior funding, and/or specific types of publications for obtaining one’s first tenure-track position in neuroscience. To address these beliefs, we examined the funding and publication history of a cohort of investigators who began their first academic faculty position between 2009 and 2019, and we interviewed several senior academic leaders with extensive experience in hiring new faculty. Our data show that <11% of newly hired faculty had a K99/R00 award and that neither prior funding nor papers in prestigious journals were necessary to obtain a tenure-track faculty position. Interviews with academic leaders almost uniformly referred to critically important factors that were considered to be more important in the hiring process than funding or publishing in high-profile journals.

The data collected from 20 lavender growers of three blocks of Chamba district by personal interview using multi-stage purpose sampling technique. In lavender farms share of male labour was found to be more than female labour. Working as daily paid labourers followed by farming, service and business was the main occupation of adult family members. BCR (over total variable cost) as well as BCR (over total cost) was worked out as 3.170 and 0.642 respectively for lavender crop. Family labour income and net income measures per hectare were found to be negative for lavender crop. About 95% and 25% of selected lavender farmers’ responded positively regarding availability of good quality seed/seedlings and disease problem in seed/seedlings respectively, in the initial stage of sowing of lavender crop. Besides, 90% responded that cost of marketing of produce was high, all the respondents were hiring transport to market the produce. Likewise, 65% responded that there is lack of cheap credit from banks for lavender farming. The lack of profitability indicates the need to strengthen R&D work, extension services, training of farmers, establishment of cold storage facilities, and co-operatives farming societies for enhancing prospects of lavender farming.

The text contains information about The Voices of the 20th Century Archive and Research Group, a department created in 2009 in the Institute of Sociology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The archive is a collection of data from historical—and sometimes forgotten—qualitative research. The Group attempts to complete the information and protect it from destruction. For example, in regard to research into labourers’ life styles in the 1970s, the author shows how difficult it is after years to create a cohesive whole from the scattered materials. She likens the task to putting together a puzzle. She points to the possible advantages of reusing the material, as well as the limitations a contemporary researcher encounters in attempting to make sense of it.

The Instituto Tecnologico de Ensenada (Ensenada Technological Institute), as provider of higher education, must face at least two perspectives for the community: on one hand, graduates from the high school are looking careers as tagged as interested for them; but on the other hand, in the future they should have a hiring panorama (labor force requested in the region). The present work provides an analysis perspective from a probabilistic point of view using Markov matrices, to study whether there is a possible future congruence point which would indicate which is (are) the career(s) that university should bet as "safe". Namely, according with the historical data of new student’s vs graduates and considering that every semester involves costs offer a career that has a major probability that students do not continuous with their studies; knowing this, will allow at school to redirect their resources to another career that has this possibility; i.e., continuity in their student’s and hiring probability. Additionally, this methodology may help to other universities in the region to make decisions that will influence in the future of the entity.

Background: Skin diseases are quite common among migrant workers, yet little research has been done to determine their prevalence and risk factors. Poor living conditions, over-crowding, low standards of personal hygiene and environmental sanitation make them even more vulnerable. The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence and pattern of skin infections among migrant labourers and their relationship with selected socio-demographic factors.Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study was carried out among 300 temporary migrants visiting dermatology OPD of A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences teaching hospital. The duration of study was two months. All patients were diagnosed clinically by qualified dermatologists and supported by relevant investigations.Results: Most of the migrants were males (62%) while remaining (38%) were females. Majority of the migrants (42.3%) belonged to 20-40 years age group. Infectious skin diseases were found among 64.3% of the study subjects while 34.7% of them had non-infectious skin diseases. The lesions were mainly over head and neck (23.3%) followed by abdomen (23%), upper limbs (21.3%) and lower limbs (21.3%).Conclusions: The study revealed a high prevalence of infectious skin diseases among the migrant workers.

SUMMARYAim– To investigate whether employers who have experience of hiring people with mental health problems differ significantly from those without such experience in terms of knowledge, attitudes and behaviours regarding mental health in the workplace, and the concerns which they report about employing people with mental health problems. We also examine whether non-workplace social contact is associated with the above variables.Methods– A telephone survey was conducted with a randomly selected sample of British employers. The sample included a similar number of human resource managers and managers/executive employees in other roles.Results– 502 employers took part. Having employed someone with a mental health problem was associated with closer non-workplace social contact. Those with experience of employing applicants with mental health problems had significant differences in knowledge (regarding the law), and behaviour (having a policy on hiring applicants with disabilities) but not in attitudes.Conclusions– Non-workplace social contact may be useful to consider in understanding hiring practices. The nature of social contact at work and possible lack of impact of this contact on employer attitudes and concerns warrants further study. Greater support is needed for employers to understand the law regarding mental health problems in the workplace.Declaration of Interest:The study was part funded by Big Lottery and Comic Relief through their funding of the Time to Change programme. Дисертація присвячена комплексному дослідженню звичаєво-правового інституту наймитування в українській етнокультурі другої половини ХІХ – початку ХХ століть. Розкрито основні складові частини договору наймання робітників за звичаєвим правом. Досліджено особливості відносин між господарями і наймитами та їх регулювання. Виявлено, що в звичаєво-правових відносинах наймання традиційні уявлення українців стосовно соціальних ролей у сімейних, громадських та трудових відносинах мали вплив на сфери сільськогосподарського найму чоловіків та жінок, можливості реалізації своєї робочої сили, умови праці та платні, обсяг прав та обов'язків. Показано, що звичаї самоорганізації повинні були забезпечити успішну реалізацію виконуваних за наймом робіт і гармонізувати відносини як між наймитами та господарями, так і всередині наймитського колективу. Проаналізовано основні світоглядні та звичаєво-правові уявлення, пов'язані з відносинами наймання, соціальним і правовим становищем наймита. Формування та функціонування інституту наймитування в українській етнокультурі відбувалося на основі звичаєво-правових і господарських традицій, світоглядних настанов, усталених статевовікових та соціальних ролей українського селянства під впливом нових соціально-економічних явищ.

This thesis offers complex study of the essence, significance and functioning of customary law institute of hiring in Ukrainian ethnoculture. The institute is analysed as a system of interconnected customary law ideas and norms, terms of agreement, ritual practices, social and gender roles, forms of organization, labour activity and lore concerning the hiring agricultural workers. The study reveals basic components of labour contract and analyzes special features of relations between wage labourers and masters and their regulation according to customary law norms. Traditional ideas of Ukrainians concerning social roles in domestic, communal and labour relations influenced spheres of men and women farm labour, availabilities of their workforces implementation, terms of labour and rewards, measures of rights and obligations. These ideas in customary-law relations of hiring consolidated the status of women and children as deficient labourers comparatively to men. The results of research show that customs of worker self-organization were aimed to secure successful execution of hired labour and to harmonize the relations between labourers and masters and within the working association. The objectives of the research are Ukrainian peasantry’s world-view and customary law conceptions that played fundamental role in the relations of hiring, social and law status of wage labourers. It also focuses on the examination of the consequences of this tradition on the social life of peasant community.Agricultural ritualism including magic rituals subserved proper regulation of hiring and accomplishment of works as well as labour contract compliancy. Drawing upon research it becomes clear that the functioning of examined tradition of hiring labourers was based on established customary law and economic practices, social and gender roles that are embedded in Ukrainian traditional culture. Moreover, the customary law practice of hiring labourers had a great impact on core values and relationships within peasant community.

Although the practice of day labouring can be traced back for centuries, it has become a steadily growing global phenomenon and has significant implications for the populations and economies of both developed and developing countries. In South Africa, the day labour market serves as a catchment area for the fallout from a formal economy which is unable to provide employment to all South Africans. The day labourers are often excluded from the benefits of modern societies, such as access to social services, opportunities for employment, and adequate incomes. This study took the form of a qualitative case study and made use of an ethnographic research design. The qualitative data was collected through the conducting of semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and by making use of photovoice, while the quantitative data was generated through the administration of a questionnaire. The triangulation of several sets of data ensured the trustworthiness of the findings. The research population for the study comprised the day labourers who gathered at a particular hiring site in Cape Town. The qualitative data was analysed by means of thematic analysis, while the quantitative data was analysed by means of the SPSS software package to generate descriptive statistics, which were represented graphically in the findings in the form of pie charts and bar graphs. Although there were inherent limitations in the data which was obtained, it nevertheless provided valuable insights into the plight of day labourers in South Africa.

The purpose of the study was to locate the informal hiring sites for day labourers in Tshwane, to determine the approximate number of day labourers, to describe the nature of socio-economic activities taking place at the sites, and to make recommendations to address needs that have been identified. The research approach and methodology was exploratory, descriptive, quantitative and qualitative. In terms of the findings, 80 informal hiring sites were identified in Tshwane with approximately 3032 day labourers standing at the sites. Case studies were done on three sites and it was found that they were hazardous and lacked basic facilities such as shelter and toilets. Employer-employee interactions were also found to be haphazard and sometimes manipulative and exploitative. It is recommended that intervention programmes should be implemented which could include the provision of basic facilities, skills development, job search assistance and access to comprehensive social services.

This dissertation explores the perceptions of different groups of people (subsystems) who affect and are affected by the phenomenon of day labourers in Tshwane. Three "day labourer sites" were identified. Businesses, residents, police, metro-police and the municipality directly connected to these sites were interviewed. Their perceptions were analysed using the systemic frame of reference. The data was processed to describe perceptual relational patterns between the day labourers and the different subsystems. The following themes amongst these relational patterns were identified and described: employment, law and order, contact between subsystems, sharing the environment / community and resources / facilities. These themes were described in relation to the Bill of Rights (Chapter 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996). This research aims to highlight some of the voices of the groups affecting and affected by the phenomenon of day labourers.

The focus of this chapter is on Tunisia’s labor and education institutions and regulations, and their impact on market performance. The chapter examines how the regulations affect the cost of formal employment, including the ease of hiring and firing, and the mismatch between supply and demand of educated labor. In Tunisia, larger firms create most of the formal employment, but are not growing fast enough, while informal employment is widespread partly because of inappropriate regulations that increase the cost of formal employment. This chapter argues that the high cost of formality, and weak law enforcement, are the main factors that accelerate the growth of informal employment and that the greater the level of informal employment, the longer it takes to fight unemployment. The analysis comprises an important institutional component and relies on the data provided by the TLMPS 2014 and other sources, mainly the National Statistics Institute (INS).

This chapter focuses on John Wesley Gilbert’s undergraduate studies at Brown University from 1886 to 1888. The chapter examines the previous experiences of black students Inman Page and George Washington Milford at Brown, along with Gilbert’s choice of the school. The chapter explores his housing situation on campus and the reaction of fellow students to his presence, his coursework with Greek professor Albert Harkness and other instructors, and his growing involvement in the black community of Providence, Rhode Island. The chapter pays special attention to Gilbert’s relationship with Harkness, who was one of the most noted classical scholars in the United States as well as a leading figure in the establishment of the new American School of Classical Studies at Athens (American School or ASCSA). The chapter culminates with Gilbert’s hiring at Paine Institute in early 1888, a decision made by Paine’s interracial board of trustees in spite of objections from a white faculty member at Paine.

The University of Guadalajara’s Valley Campus (Centro Universitario de los Valles – Universidad de Guadalajara), is yet to frame its international faculty, although institutional documents highlight their significance in fulfilling the internationalization agenda. This study is framed by the transformative paradigm, through an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design. Data collection and analysis is orchestrated through cross-tabulation analysis and a survey. The cross-tabulation analysis identifies salient themes in scholarly literature. The themes that emerge from the literature form units of analysis which are used to survey all tenured faculty’s portfolios. Findings identified 21% of faculty members who meet at least one of the criteria established by the research instrument. Conversely, the data revealed elements that can identify international faculty but are not accounted for in the literature reviewed. The findings indicated that the data solicited upon hiring is insufficient to fully identify faculty members as international, and even more insufficient to establish the grounds for a desirable profile. This study proposed the founding of the “Intercampus Institute for International Higher Education” with Research Lines and Educational Centers for furthering the internationalization agenda through international faculty engagement.

Focusing on one archaeological mound, Tell ed-Duweir, in the lowland region of Palestine, in the vicinity of Hebron, identified as biblical Lachish, the fortress city in the kingdom of Judah, Chapter 4 moves between London, the Tell, and its neighbouring villages. The chapter is a history of a landmark excavation, which uncovers the variety of its archaeological, biblical, anthropological, social, and political layers. Drawing on a wealth of written and visual materials at the Wellcome Institute, the British Museum Archives, the Israel Antiquities Authority, the National Archives, as well as on the press and archaeologists’ records, the chapter relates the identification of the Tell as Lachish, the discovery of the famous Lachish Letters (in pre-Exilic Hebrew), and their effect on Biblical Archaeology and epigraphy, to the rise of new fields of knowledge such as physical anthropology and anthropometrics. The chapter argues that the excavation project was regarded by archaeologists as a means of modernizing rural Palestine and the lives of Palestinian peasants and labourers. It recovers the modernizers’ daily life on the Tell and their representations of it in writing, photography, and documentary films. It also recoups the process of the Tell’s expropriation, as a historical monument, by the mandate authorities. Alongside the reports of archaeologists like James Leslie Starkey (who was murdered on his way from the Tell to the opening of the new Rockefeller museum in Jerusalem), Olga Tufnell, and Charles Inge, the chapter recovers the voices of villagers as they are heard through their petitions to the government about their denied access to the excavated land.
