This study has examined the knowledge required for the publication of an Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (E&BI) focused teaching text. The research design was based on a constructivist, interpretive paradigm, and utilised a qualitative methodology to support the development of a framework and content for a text. Data collection occurred through formal research, discovery and exploration of knowledge rather than verification, and was subject to my interpretation arising from my participation as an academic. The analysis of data required a conceptual framework to be developed consistent with the research paradigm, and be so designed as to provide a way for me through a participatory process, to identify and evaluate knowledge in E&BI and investigate the research questions. The study rationalised that E&BI educational programs must first be consistent with, and reflective of, the mission of the institution providing such programs, and also, must address the learning needs of students. Previous research undertaken for this thesis had clearly identified a strong demand for material on E&BI that combined theory and practice with case studies drawn from real world entrepreneurial practices. The outcome of this study resulted in the design of a formal text that was suitable for use by secondary, community and adult education institutions within Australia, for delivery to both a digital and print audience and representative of international E&BI good practice. The text “Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation” was published in 2005. The published text was designed to provide new entrepreneurs and existing Small to Medium Enterprise owners with a practical guide on how to pursue business success based on established entrepreneurial and enterprise management techniques. The thesis has explicated the scholarly coherence and originality of the published work, and further places the text within a pedagogical framework.

This study explores local innovation and entrepreneurship in Ghana. It presents the results of 28 in-person interviews with Ghanaian entrepreneurs who live and work in four cities across Ghana. The interviews detailed the entrepreneurs' business endeavors, backgrounds, and thoughts regarding Ghanaian innovation and entrepreneurship. The interview data was supplemented with a statistical analysis in order to observe trends among the entrepreneurs, and the main findings offer some insight into Ghanaian entrepreneurship. Overall, the interview participants found it relatively easy to start businesses in Ghana, and started businesses for a variety of reasons, which included a deficit of currently existing jobs and the desire to solve a local problem in an entrepreneurial way. In addition, the makeup of the businesses varied, and many included both a for-profit and philanthropic arms. The philanthropic arms of businesses also varied in terms of focus and informativeness. Although the cities in which the entrepreneurs are situated are very different, geography did not seem to impact the businesses' focus overall. The study also investigated the relationship of entrepreneurship to innovation in Ghana. Overall, we determined that entrepreneurship in Ghana does not always mean that innovation is occurring, and that many entrepreneurs seemed limited in their capacity to innovate. The study identifies several barriers to innovation in Ghana, including a lack of capital, infrastructure challenges, and an entrenched system of apprenticeship. Within the bounds of the study, the more innovative businesses tended to be headed by entrepreneurs who were more highly educated, and businesses with more innovative philanthropic arms tended to be started by entrepreneurs with more clearly-defined role models. The results of this study are not representative of the whole pool of Ghanaian entrepreneurs because the interview participants were not selected rigorously. The findings are intended to be used as guidelines for future work relating to entrepreneurship and innovation in Ghana, and potentially other developing countries.

These essays investigate the role of entrepreneurial human capital as a driver of innovation and growth. In the first chapter, I estimate the effect of manager education on firm employment growth using administrative panel data on the universe of firms in Portugal between 1995 and 2009. I exploit manager changes and switches between management and other occupations to account for unobserved firm and manager characteristics as well as selection into management. I find that a year of manager schooling increases firm growth by around 0.25 percentage points per year, and also increases survival. In addition, manager education is a highly persistent firm characteristic. These findings imply that manager education can lead to large differences in firm size over the lifecycle. On average, a firm with a college educated manager starts out just nine percent larger than a firm with a primary school educated manager. In a simple simulation, I find that it grows to two thirds larger by age 12 and three times larger by age 30. Entrepreneurial human capital can increase growth through different mechanisms. One of them is the ability to incorporate advances in the technological frontier into production. In the second chapter I explore the importance of this mechanism by analyzing the relationship between local demand for knowledge and city growth using a new database of 5.5 million books published in Europe from 1450 to 1800. The database consists of individual book data drawn from over 72,000 library catalogs around the world, including most major national and research libraries. Exploiting within-city variation, I find that book production is a strong predictor of subsequent population growth. I then distinguish between possible interpretations of this relationship using information on book subjects. I find that the results are robust for books on technology, finance, medicine and history, with technology and finance having the largest coefficients. In addition, although science books as a whole are insignificant, books on chemistry and geology also increase growth, which is consistent with the important roles of chemistry and coal mining during the Industrial Revolution. Books on other topics, such as religion or literature, are not associated with growth, suggesting that the findings reflect the diffusion of knowledge rather than literacy or consumption.

This dissertation attempts to contribute to extant discussions on how one utilizes knowledge for economic gain. The first essay is a response to the controversy on whether the interactions divert academic scientists research agenda toward industry interests at the expense of fundamental science. This essay considers how an academic scientist chooses the level of difficulty of a research project and its level of relevance to industry interests. A simple game-theoretic model between research sponsors, a government agency and a firm, and an academic scientist is constructed. The shows that the funding decisions of research sponsors are strategic substitutes. It also shows that the academic scientists choices of project characteristics are strategic complements. The second essay provides insights on scientific entrepreneurs. It is argued that the nature of scientists research, specifically the level of its commercial applicability, is an important predictor of entrepreneurial actions of academic scientists. Using data from 395 academic scientists at five top US research universities, it is observed that there is a non-linear relationship between the nature of research and entrepreneurial actions. The third essay offers insights on entrepreneurial teams. This essay investigates mechanisms that give rise to entrepreneurial teams. The model shows that an entrepreneur obtains less expected value from a project if the entrepreneur chooses to work solo at latter stage than working in a team. It is also explained how asymmetry of importance between tasks in a commercialization project influences the decision of team formation and its optimal size. An extended model is constructed to analyze two benefits of team work: specialization and diversity.

ABSTRACT This thesis investigates innovative entrepreneurship in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The thesis is guided by the National Innovation Systems theory, where innovation is seen as result of interactions and learning between different institutions or actors. The objective was to investigate how conducive is the national system of innovation of Ethiopia in the perception of entrepreneurs and how relevant is the innovation policy of Ethiopia is to innovative entrepreneurship. A field study was conducted in order to collect empirical data through semi-structured interviews, observations and participation. Most of the interviews took place in the innovation hub iceAddis with most of the sample focusing on entrepreneurs that were members there. The results of the field study show that the national system of innovation of Ethiopia is not particularly conducive nor developed to empower to innovative entrepreneurs. Moreover, the policy although very ambitious does not explicably aim to empower entrepreneur. Other goals of the policy could have had spillover effects on entrepreneurs but they were not yet attained in the perception of innovative entrepreneurs. This work, following the conceptual recombination theory, by which ideas and concepts are mentally merged to transform and extend knowledge, explores and summarizes the current sources of academic literature, simultaneously engaging research in the fields of entrepreneurship and creativity. A bibliometric co-citation analysis was applied to identify the invisible colleges and the latent relationships among the most significant papers. Multivariate analyses including cluster, latent class, multidimensional scaling, and Pathfinder were combined to map the nodes positioning the literature. The goal of this study is (1) to increase the awareness of scholars by detecting and visualizing the intellectual structure of the shared ground among both sets of literature; (2) to identify the connected schools of thought, methods, constructs, and theories to problematize or literature gaps to be filled; (3) to reveal the network structure the central, bridge, and peripheral nodes and to hypothesize trailblazing trends, sidings, or forgotten contributions; and (4) to generate, thanks to a creativity grant, new insights to enable entrepreneurs to explore new frontiers. Using creativity techniques and a panel of experts in support, 26 keywords were generated, extracted, assessed and exploited to identify the research unit of 1533 articles. Following a further evaluation process, 73 major co-cited items were finally selected. Given the transverse nature of the creativity domain and of the search for academic interdisciplinary comminglings, data were collected from Science (SCI), Social Sciences (SSCI) and Arts and Humanities (A&HCI) citation indices for the 1991-2013 period.

The first chapter studies Entrepreneurship and the Stigma of Failure. Entrepreneurial activity varies substantially across countries and sectors and appears to be related to the stigma of failure. To understand this phenomenon, I present a multiple-equilibrium model based on endogenous stigma of failure. Using private information, entrepreneurs choose whether to continue a project or to abandon it and raise funds to undertake a new project. Project outcomes depend on luck and ability, and the cost of capital for failed entrepreneurs is determined by the market's expectations about their ability. In the conservative equilibrium failed entrepreneurs face a high cost of capital and thus good entrepreneurs are reluctant to terminate a project. The resulting low quality of the pool of failed entrepreneurs justifies in turn the high cost of capital. The reverse is true in the experimental equilibrium where good entrepreneurs are more willing to start again and the cost of capital for failed entrepreneurs is low. The equilibria differ in the level and nature of entrepreneurial activity, with riskier projects undertaken in the experimental equilibrium. I discuss the relative efficiency of the two equilibria and study from this perspective the role of financial structure and legal environment such as bankruptcy rules and fresh start policy. The second Chapter examines institutions and contracts for start-up finance. I develop a model in which entrepreneurs and investors can hold-up each other once the venture is under way: investors can deny further funding, and entrepreneurs can withdraw from the venture.
(cont.) The entrepreneurs' exit option determines which party needs protection. If the exit option is good, venture capital financing protects the investor through technological monitoring, control rights, and staged financing. If the exit option is bad, bank debt protects the entrepreneur as it involves little technological monitoring, limited control rights, and committed finance. The exit option depends on the legal environment and on the stigma of failure, endogenized in a career concern model. When entrepreneurs can choose project risk, multiple equilibria arise with different financial institutions. Venture capital prevails in the high-risk equilibrium and bank debt in the low-risk equilibrium. The paper investigates why the forms of start-up financing differ across sectors, regions and countries. It offers an explanation for why venture capital has been more prevalent in the US than in Europe. The theory has implications for policy, e.g., regarding the efficiency of non-compete agreements and bankruptcy law. The third chapter, cowritten with Olivier Blanchard, addresses the question of the welfare effects of partial flexibilization of the labor market. Rather than decrease firing costs across the board, a number of European countries have allowed firms to hire workers on fixed-term contracts. At the end of a given term, these contracts can be terminated at little or no cost. If workers are kept on however, the contracts become subject to normal firing costs. We argue in this paper that the effects of such a partial reform of employment protection may be perverse. The main effect may be high turnover in entry-level jobs, leading in turn to higher, not lower, unemployment ...

This thesis has developed appropriate dynamic models to shed more light on how pervasive innovation (e.g., equity-for-guarantee swaps) in entrepreneurship/hedge funds could alleviate the severe financing constraints for entrepreneurs/hedge fund managers who plan to launch new businesses. Chapter 2 considers a risk-averse entrepreneur who invests in a project with idiosyncratic risk and takes debt financing via equity-for-guarantee swaps for diversification benefits. In contrast to the literature, we assume the entrepreneur is unable to get a loan from a bank directly because of the low credibility of the entrepreneur and lack of collateral and therefore, an innovative financial contract, equity-for-guarantee swaps, is signed among a bank, an insurer, and the entrepreneur. The new swap not only solves the serious problems of widespread financing constraints, but also significantly improves the welfare level of the entrepreneur. Chapter 3 develops a new financial derivative product called fees-for-guarantee swap to alleviate financing constraints of ESFs managers as well as mitigate the manager’s risk shifting behaviour. Numerical results indicate that the incentive compensation, managerial ownership and the possibility of fund liquidation significantly mitigate the manager’s risk shifting incentive. In Chapter 4, a dynamic valuation model of the hedge fund seeding business has been built to study the consumption and portfolio choice problem for a risk-averse manager who launches a hedge fund via a seeing vehicle. This vehicle, i.e. fees-for-seed swap, specifies that a strategic partner (seeder) provides a critical amount of capital in exchange for participation in the funds revenue. If structured properly this seeding vehicle could lead to Pareto improvement, as it alleviates the ESFs manager’s financial constraint, helps seeder get high potential return for good performance and ordinary investors are more willing to invest in funds backed up by seeding investment.

This dissertation considers how innovation and entrepreneurship are developed, encouraged, and evaluated with the theoretical lens of economic sociology. The first chapter investigates who becomes an entrepreneur among the pool of general consumers. The process by which individuals become entrepreneurs is often described as a decisive moment of transition, yet it necessarily involves a series of smaller steps. By breaking down the transition stages of knitting hobbyists' transition to producers who sell their original design patterns, the study examines the distinctive characteristics that affect users' decision to (a) create new products and (b) commercialize them. The second chapter examines the role of social capital in revealing and encouraging entrepreneurship. To the question of how social capital benefits innovation and entrepreneurship, existing literature has provided one dominant answer: access to information and resources.
In this study, I suggest an alternative mechanism how social capital benefits an individual's entrepreneurial transition: social networks provide potential entrepreneurs self-confidence on the promise of their new ideas and encourages their entry into the market. Using a matched sample of potential innovators, I show that an individual's participation in a local group encourages her transition to an entrepreneur, especially for those who already have the necessary skills for the transition. The empirical analysis resonates with qualitative evidence that hobbyists make the transition to entrepreneurs when encouraged by their friends. The third chapter (co-authored with Pierre Azoulay and Ezra Zuckerman) considers commitment-based typecasting among knit designers. We show that "commitment-based typecasting" has two characteristic features: asymmetry in audience valuation and retrospective reevaluation.
When a novice performer experiences an "identity shock" that suggests that she is more committed to the audience for one category than another, "betrayed" audience tends to regard her as having always been less committed to the rival audience/category. We test this theory in the domain of knitting, where there is a divide between avant-garde knitters and traditional knitters, and we show that when a novice knit designer is first published in the publication associated with one category, this elicits a retrospective devaluation of her prior work by the audience of the opposing category.

Corporate entrepreneurship (CE) is an entrepreneurial process that involves one or more individuals – corporate entrepreneurs – working with or within an existing organisation, with the aim of generating inner renewal or innovation. Few studies deal with the impacts of CE processes at the individual level. In order to improve organisational performance, we asked the following question : What are the impacts of a CE experience, conducted within large French firms (Insee, 2019), on the dimensions of corporate entrepreneurs’ occupational well-being (Biétry et Creusier, 2013)? To answer this research question, we have conducted qualitative research and its methods. We interviewed 70 corporate entrepreneurs and analysed 15 CE devices into 12 large French firms. The results show that corporate entrepreneurs’ occupational well-being is impacted differently depending on the context in which they are involved, but also according to two moderating factors, which are (1) the management of CE devices and (2) the intrinsic characteristics of corporate entrepreneurs. Then, this research work has also highlighted (3) the difficulty for internal corporate entrepreneurs to reintegrate the organisation after this experience. The management of the exit from CE processes is a major challenge for the organisation. The psychological approach of this thesis work allows us to answer to the research question, and opens research perspectives in management and, especially in human resources management

Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneur are not gender-neutral concepts.[1] In the United States, men are twice as likely to be involved in entrepreneurship than women. Women have founded or led only 11% of venture capital backed US firms. Moreover, women-led firms have received only 7% of venture capital.[2] Clearly, there is a serious dearth of women in entrepreneurship. Research has shown that education can have an impact on gender segregation of aspirations, and that it acts as a barrier for women to move into historically male-dominated roles with higher earning potential. In higher education, gender segregation results in a variety of disciplines including entrepreneurship.[3] In this thesis, we examine the problem and recommend solutions to improve entrepreneurship and innovation education and entrepreneurial opportunities for women. We look at Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) programs focused on increasing participation of women in STEM and map them to entrepreneurship. Furthermore, we discuss the programs and resources available to women entrepreneurs. We recommend designing new programs and investing in resources for women innovators and entrepreneurs.

Business model and Business model innovation are highly crucial aspects for incumbent firms in today’s very fast paced and dynamic environment. In this thesis, we seek to integrate strategic entrepreneurship theory with business model innovation. By doing so, we show how entrepreneurship, strategy and business models all lies squarely at the intersection of innovation and change. Most of the research on business models have been in the context of startups. In this study, we, however, decide to explore the context of incumbent firms and how they explore and exploit opportunities to innovate their business model.  This study contributes to a better understanding of how incumbent firms innovate their business models. It does this by answering three fundamental questions;  - How does the incumbent firm explore and exploit opportunities to innovate their business model?  - What are the drivers for innovating the incumbent firms business model?  - How does the decision-making process look like during the business model innovation processes in the incumbent firm?  To answer these questions, we have conducted a thorough literature review of the business model literature, business model innovation literature, as well as strategic entrepreneurship literature. By doing this, we highlight the most relevant aspects of these three concepts and theories, also providing the reader with a historical development of the concepts. To further build on towards answering our research questions we compliment the three central concepts with supporting theories of strategic management and innovation theory. We have answered these questions by conducting a qualitative study that is mainly explorative. Interviewing four incumbent firms that act in different industries; Banking Co, Technology Co, Productivity Co, and Software Co. Moreover, we interviewed two experts that together have over 70 years of experience in leading and consulting incumbent firms through different significant market changes. Thus, the six interviews together with internal and external organizational documents, triangulation has been used to produce the empirical results and analysis of this study.  With the empirical findings, we contribute to a comprehensive picture of how incumbent firms can efficiently adopt strategic entrepreneurship together with their business model innovation process. By doing so incumbent firms can find an optimal balance between opportunity-seeking and advantage-seeking behavior. Our findings show that incumbent firms today have a culture and structure that does not optimally promote business model innovation. The empirical findings provide two different viewpoints; one from the incumbent firm showing the current process and culture. The other viewpoint shows how the experts describe the incumbent firms and how they should change. Thus, these two different perspectives provide two different realities that we connect back to the theoretical frameworks. Moreover, this thesis contributes by showing that strategic entrepreneurship and business model innovation needs to be combined for incumbent firms to succeed in today’s fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Cities are receiving more and more residents while the natural resources are getting scarce and scarce. As a possible answer, diverse streams of thoughts have emerged declaring that cities need to become intelligent, wired or human. We decided to consider the last stage of this reflection that defines the paradigm of Smart Cities to highlight the use of the information and telecommunication technologies for a better efficiency of the urban services and in response to the residents' needs. In a Smart City, public officials monitor the services of the city and enable a better quality of life. Social insurance schemes and tax-financed municipal services are monetarily constrained and are unable to respond effectively to growing societal needs. As a consequence, the urban development has moved from a public managerial to an entrepreneurial focus where the emerging technologies e.g. Big Data, Social Media and Internet of Things (IoT) are the drivers of this transformation. My research consists on exploring, describing and analysing different forms of innovation and entrepreneurship in the city. Accordingly, we decided to orientate our epistemological works on studying the cases of two Smart Cities internationally recognized (i.e. Barcelona and Nice). To achieve this objective, we have split this research in four studies according to four chapters. The first chapter studies and shortlists amongst all the emerging technologies those which play a principal role in the building of the Smart City. It analyses also the gap that the universities have to cross to prepare the students to develop new models of urban services. The second chapter presents a case of business development in the domain of public parking. It focuses on the conditions of establishment of a digital business ecosystem based on an IoT platform and analyses the value created and captured by this model. The third chapter presents the case of a citizen initiative in the domain of the education called 'the school road'. It has the objective to list, classify and analyse the barriers that limit this project. It finalizes proposing different solutions to mitigate the impediments and stress the possible social contribution of the small and local shops for this initiative. In the final chapter, following these recommendations, we investigate how the stores spread in the urban grid could play this social role. Focusing on the first phase of the entrepreneurship process, i.e., the opportunity identification, we suggest a heuristic able to recommend and numerically prioritize the vacant locations as per their opportunity of business value creation. The originality of this heuristic resides on the capacity to cover social and business perspectives together. The first and third study are inductive and qualitative researches whereas the second and fourth are deductive and quantitative ones. The qualitative researches are based on interviews to Smart City experts and a survey sent to parents. The quantitative ones are supported by scientific theories about business model generation. The value calculation of the digital business ecosystem is verified by paired T-Test and polynomial linear regression analysis. Data from parking sensors are collected and analysed with a Big Data analytics solution. The heuristic leverages the theory of complex networks applied to the urban grid. We recommend the entrepreneurs to consider our results before starting any new services based on an IoT supply chain platform or deciding on the location of their future shop. We advise also public managers to leverage our findings to revise their urban policy if their goal is to revitalize the local industrial and services urban base.

How should capabilities and resource-constrained High-Technology New Venture (HTNV) companies deal with selling and marketing? I answer this question by developing a conceptual model for viewing supplier-customer (business to business or business to consumer) relationships for HTNVs. I call this model the HTNV Purchaser-Stakeholder Model (P.S.M.). I set the scene of the inquiry by outlining the difficulties HTNVs face and the competitive environment in which they operate. I accomplish this through the theoretical lens of the Resource-Based View of the firm. I take a holistic view of HTNV-customer-supplier interaction by analysing how different starting resource configurations are related to the role of purchasing-stakeholders and their purchasing behaviour. I incorporate elements of the resource-based taxonomy with the seminal “buyer model” of Webster and Wind (1972) to create a more holistic model with customer-supplier interactions. This model helps a business to break down its customers or potential customers on the basis of its Decision Making Units (DMU) or “buying centres” into initiator, influencer, gatekeeper, decider, buyer and user and outlines appropriate strategies to take given its relationship with each of these DMUs. This model is useful because managers in new companies can then view the model as integrated with a customer’s business processes, rather than isolated evaluations of discrete product or service offerings. This model provides a useful tool for new companies to determine the most appropriate marketing, selling and growth strategies. It is hoped this model may provide some guidance for early stage HTNVs when planning and implementing marketing, selling and growth strategies.

Over the last two decades, Boston and Cambridge have generated some of the strongest and most celebrated innovation districts - Kendall Square and the Seaport District - in which new models of commercial and civic real estate support dense webs of relationships among high-growth companies, academia, investors, mentors, and corporate R&D. Although beneficial for the overall competitiveness of the region, the wealth generated by these start-up and tech communities is not broadly shared, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts's economic development policy, Opportunities for All, has focused on reducing disparities across the state. Meanwhile, the state's Gateway Cities present persistent challenges with lower than average incomes and weak market conditions for real estate development. Since 2014, MassDevelopment's Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) has focused the state's investment in Gateway Cities on projects intended to generate follow-on private investment, including TDI Cowork grants for "collaborative workspaces," broadly defined. In an effort to support communities of entrepreneurs across the state, TDI Cowork expanded into a state-wide Collaborative Workspaces Program in 2016. Despite this interest in using community-oriented workspaces to catalyze new economic opportunities, policymakers, developers, and other economic development professionals in Massachusetts lack a comprehensive picture of what spaces are currently available that aim to support innovation and entrepreneurship. A new inventory of workspaces utilized three categories from a previous list of innovation assets and found 50 "coworking spaces," 51 "innovation centers," and 20 "maker spaces." Of the 121 spaces, approximately 70 opened in the last three years and several others are expected to open in 2017. Survey data showed that spaces in Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville differ from those in the rest of the state in several ways that are significant for stakeholders aiming to catalyze economic development, including a higher portion serving startup teams, providing access to corporate partners and investors, and supporting members/users of digital products versus creative or professional services. Further analysis of the innovation ecosystem in Worcester suggested opportunities to attract mid-stage start-ups and mid-career entrepreneurs rather than focusing on undergraduate student retention as an economic development strategy.

Sustainable development has an economic, ecological and a social component. Innovation and entrepreneurship play an important role in the sustainable development of an economy, a region or a country. We consider the ways in which universities can support innovation and entrepreneurship, and we outline some of the supporting structures and methods. The corresponding community aspects are covered by the author's paper on Civic Engagement and Project Learning. The following results are based on the author's experiences mainly in Germany as a researcher, lecturer, engineer, manager and consultant. There are different ways for a university to support and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. Although the aims and effects of innovation and entrepreneurship are quite different, universities have to support both in order to achieve a sustainable development of industry and society. Important aspects comprise motivation, modelling and management. The most important ways of support are given by the triad of education, research and direct support. Nevertheless, we must never forget, that people are the most important issue in innovation and entrepreneurship. Hence, motivation, information and networking play an important role.

A country’s economic growth is often related to its ability to be innovative. Innovation is unluckily difficult to measure and it is hard to find a specific source of innovation. Start-ups/new firms are however one of those specific sources. One investment type that has specialized in investing in young and highly technological portfolio-companies is venture capital. This thesis therefore aims to investigate the impact that the venture capital industry has on young and innovative companies in Sweden by a literature review and a quantitative study of approximately 60 different companies. By firstly thoroughly examining the underlying scientific theory for this subject and furthermore examining both the international as well as the Swedish venture capital industry it was possible to conduct an empirical study. A selection of young companies was taken from an impartial source and then identified as innovative or not by Schumpeter’s definition of innovation. Moreover these companies were investigated on the premises on whether they had been invested in by venture capital or not. It was found that the Swedish venture capital industry is highly involved in young and innovative Swedish companies, and a linkage between innovation and venture capital exists. However the answer to the question on whether it is venture capital that drives innovation or if it is already innovative companies that attract venture capital is inconclusive in this thesis and future studies in this field is needed.

This work is concerned with the financing of Chinese social entrepreneurship. China is experiencing an all-time high in terms of pollution, as well as increasing social unrest. The introduction of a market economy in the country has led to a rapid economic growth, but has left many issues unsolved. The mass lay-offs that followed therationalization of State-Owned Enterprises in the 1990s created a large unemployment, and the industrialization process has only very recently been accompanied by measures toprotect the environment. To tackle those issues, more and more are appealing to theefficiency of the very same market economy to produce sustainable and scalable solutions. To better understand the financing landscape that presents itself to entrepreneurs in needof capital, a literature and interview-based study has been conducted to summarize it interms of sources, stage, efficiency and average size. Unfortunately, few sources of capital have been found to be available to them, and none of them can be described as easily accessible. It is therefore recommended that the different actors involved in the marketwork together to lower these barriers.

This research will examine the literature, the context, and current policies intended to enhance entrepreneurship in Latin America. It will draw on examples from across the region, focusing on Chile in particular. It will also examine the strong emphasis on science and technology innovation in certain countries in Latin America. Because this is currently one of the primary features of entrepreneurship policy in the region, it is worth exploring the implications this trend has for development in Latin America and the impact it is having on the entrepreneurship policy goals of increasing productivity, resilience, and inclusive growth. The results of this analysis are concerning. By narrowly defining innovation, officials may be encouraging the development of enclave economies of limited benefit and diverting resources away from more inclusive policies. On the other hand, if aligned more closely with local business realities and needs, innovation policies could lead to inclusive and sustainable growth. It will conclude with specific policy recommendations that, with contextual adaptations, can be applied to enrich the environment for entrepreneurship across the region.

In the recent years, the pervasive use of digital technologies has remarkably changed our society. Realizing its huge potential for transforming a society, many emerging markets worldwide have widely adopted digital technologies aiming at poverty reduction, rapid socio-economic development and sustainability through a better connected society. However, despite its large scale adoption, a major percentage of digital technology-based projects in these markets have failed completely or partially. Considering the unique characteristics of emerging markets, it is now well acknowledged that the canonical set of methods used for innovation in developed economies do not work in the emerging markets and need doing things differently. As these projects are often led by entrepreneurs who lack in local knowledge, the projects suffer in contextualization of innovation leading to failure. This doctoral thesis examines dynamics of digital innovation in emerging markets focusing on digital entrepreneurship, digital technology driven enterprise transformation and co-creation of IT value for the firms engaged in such digital ventures. This thesis adopts three paper format and is grounded in concepts and theories from wide range of related and intertwined academic literatures: those of digital innovation in emerging markets, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, liminality, enterprise transformation, path creation, co-creation of IT value and social-commercial alliance. As methodologies, I have adopted interpretive cases studies and conducted three case studies in an emerging market, Bangladesh to collect empirical data. One of the papers is based on single case while two others are drawn on two cases. The first paper investigates two digital innovation projects in emerging markets drawing on liminality to explore how contexts and entrepreneurial agency in emerging markets co-evolve through digital technologies. Drawing on a single case, the second paper examines the transformation of an organization that adopts ICT. And finally, the third paper explores the process of co-creation and emanation IT value in two social-commercial alliances that embeds IT as their key resources for innovation. Overall, the thesis has several contributions to the theories and for practice. Specifically, the key theoretical contributions of the thesis are: 1) illustrating that digital innovations in emerging markets offer liminal space for entrepreneurs, 2) conceptualizing digital entrepreneurship and innovation as a constitutive process, 3) developing a process framework for digital innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging markets, 4) offering three practices for digital innovation in emerging markets, 5) conceptualizing ICT-based enterprise transformation in emerging market as a process of path creation, 6) offering ‘mindful deviation’ as a key practice for enterprise transformation, 7) developing a theoretical model for co-creation of IT value in social-commercial alliances and 8) building theoretical propositions related to firms‘ motivations for co-creation through IT. Further to that, I discuss several practical implications of the findings and also offer few implications for future research.

Given the increasing complexity of innovation and entrepreneurship, Chinese innovators and entrepreneurs often develop guanxi in order to establish collaborations. In this pattern of open innovation, mutual resources based on guanxi are able to benefit the guanxi actors. Therefore, how innovators and entrepreneurs develop guanxi may have an impact on the outcome of their innovation and entrepreneurship. Existing guanxi development models taking de-relational substantial ism treat guanxi development processes as comprised of individual guanxi constructs, which are substantial elements acting by their own powers. In consequence, the focus of existing studies is placed on investigating the guanxi constructs, and the processes of guanxi development are intended to reduce to these isolated guanxi constructs. However, Chinese guanxi is an intricate social phenomenon, and people develop guanxi within certain contexts. Thus, no guanxi construct can be separated from its situated contexts and act independently. In practice, guanxi constructs relate to each other dynamically, so their relational nature is more significant in developing guanxi. This research criticises the existing studies on guanxi development as static and lacking the support of empirical research. A combined philosophical approach of structuralism and relationism has been taken to explore the processes and dynamics of guanxi development among Chinese innovators and entrepreneurs. This approach addresses the relational nature of guanxi constructs, which then reflects the intricacy of the Chinese guanxi phenomenon and the dynamic nature of guanxi development. Therefore, this relational and structuralist approach is more relevant for understanding the guanxi development processes. Drawing on relational sociology and structuration theory, a theoretical framework is constructed to show the pattern of structural interactions involved throughout the entire process of guanxi development. With empirical evidence collected from fieldwork, it is demonstrated that the structural interactions between guanxi actors and their situated relational contexts constitute the dynamic processes of guanxi development. This research challenges existing models, especially their philosophical perspective of de-relational substantial ism . By extending the focus of study to include the relational nature of guanxi constructs, this research fills the gaps in the literature on the dynamics of guanxi development, and proposes a theoretical framework of dynamic guanxi development processes with empirical support.

Family enterprises comprise the majority of business organizations around the globe and provide significant economic benefit. Yet, continuity and stability with the family business rarely surpasses the second generation. This phenomenon leads to an understanding of the importance of succession. This study suggests transgenerational entrepreneurship and the opportunity for innovation with successive generations may resolve the long-term challenges that confront family businesses in transition. Transgenerational entrepreneurship occurs when families develop and implement entrepreneurial mindsets and capabilities across generations. Utilizing a sample of potential successor of family-owned businesses in the United States from MTurk, this study examines the relationships of entrepreneurial intention and opportunity for innovation on the succession decision made by the potential successor. The study also examines the moderating role of organizational contextual factors that impact the transgenerational entrepreneurship decision.

This thesis explores the challenges and opportunities of cultural entrepreneurship, exploring current conceptualisations of cultural entrepreneurs and to find new perspectives and recommendations for cultural entrepreneurs of the future. Cultural entrepreneurship is a contested, yet essential aspect of the growth of artists and arts organisations globally. Though there are similarities, this research demonstrates that cultural entrepreneurs from different backgrounds, industries and of varied sizes need different things and have different barriers so cannot be understood in the same way. Digital technologies and local networks do offer new possibilities for innovation however these are limited in scope and require further investigation and investment. Despite psychological, political and financial barriers to entrepreneurship in the creative industries, finding a balance between artistic, social, economic and institutional innovation for the various actors throughout the arts offers key insights to how artists and arts organisations can be more entrepreneurial. Through a grounded theory approach, this research connects previously disparate fields of cultural policy, social entrepreneurship and business model innovation to derive new perspectives of how cultural entrepreneurs can survive and thrive in the dynamically shifting world. Themes that emerged through the data analysis connect in new ways to Cohendet et al.’s (2012) ‘Anatomy of a Creative City’, outlining the underground, middleground and upperground actors; Albinsson’s (2017) theories of the quadruple bottom line in the creative industries; and a value ecosystem’s approach with a focus on value creation (Allee, 2002; Curtis, 2017). From this combination of literature and data collected, a novel approach to understanding cultural entrepreneurs emerges, creating a model to understand more holistically how value is created and captured for the artist or arts organisation. This model has a range of practical approaches intended to provide tangible pathways into combining the concepts of the quadruple bottom line, value ecosystems and different conceptualisations of cultural entrepreneurs, offering a novel contribution to all of these fields in addition to, and most significantly the topic of cultural entrepreneurship.

Young people, emerging out of the foster care system, often struggle to become productive and self-sustainable adults in society. They are at high risk of being trapped in poverty and unemployment for their entire adult life because they are unable to make a successful transition out of the foster care system to adulthood. The purpose of this study was to explore how social entrepreneurship can be utilised to establish a developmental transitional service to facilitate the successful transition to adulthood of youth in foster care. The research participants were purposefully selected and comprised social workers and foster youths based in the township and the former homelands of the Free State. Data was collected using in-depth interviews and focus groups and was analysed using content analysis. The study found that the current model of the foster care system is not designed to facilitate and support foster youth to make a successful transition to adulthood. This may be ascribed to the following: ● The legislative requirements imposed on this population group, ● The lack of preparatory transition services and ● The limited capacity of social workers to address the needs and challenges of foster youth. The study concludes that intervention is needed in the foster care system to prepare, equip and support foster youth to become productive and self-sustainable citizens. Through the application of the social entrepreneurship framework, this study demonstrates how existing resources and new actors can be leveraged to provide a developmental transitional service that will serve to promote the resilience of youth in foster care and assist them to break the cycle of poverty.

The big country in the Far East appeared in the past as if only big corporates could do business there. This point of view changed immensely over the past 10 years. Nowadays, numerous co-working spaces, maker spaces, and incubators present a fertile ground for young ventures. The situation around the Chinese startup scene changed dramatically. With the current government’s Five-Year-Plan, it becomes obvious that the political change is in favor of those young individuals who bring jobs and new perspectives for the country. Obviously, the target is not to promote western startups to settle in China primarily but to give Chinese startups the inspiration through the foreign spirit. So the research question goes as follows: What aspects of a manufacturing project will influence the success of a foreign entrepreneur in China? The methodology for this study is widely based on literature review and semistructured interviews with entrepreneurs, consultancy agencies, and nongovernmental organizations. Whereas the focus lays on foreign startups whose goal is to set up manufacturing of a consumer product in China.

The subject of this thesis is entrepreneurship policy and the focus is on public support programmes directed to early stages technology-based ventures. It advocates that a broad view should be taken with regard to the type of policies for entrepreneurship that aim at supporting the facilitation of the supported ventures’ ability to link to their surrounding innovation system, in which they can secure their access to crucial external resources. Taking the departure in the perspective that early stages technology-based ventures are vulnerable, this thesis shows that publicly financed entrepreneurship supporting programmes can be motivated because small and newly started ventures have got limited resources, and because the risks, with which they are associated, generally make them unattractive in the eyes of private actors. Among the practical implications of this thesis, the following findings are emphasised: Public support, directed to the very earliest stages of venture development benefits from broadness, for the latter stages, specialisation and a higher degree of selectiveness could be an advantage. Moreover, it is important that the support provided take into account the whole process of business development, i.e. both the issues concerned with product/service and the issues connected to the market. A long-term commitment, cooperation between different actors and information about what support is available, are other aspects that are important for policymakers to consider in their design of public policies to support entrepreneurship. Finally, the importance of evaluative awareness must be emphasised from the very start.

This dissertation consists of three essays on Finance and Innovation. The first essay argues that openness of research inputs can enable greater exploration of new research lines, particularly by academic researchers. We test this hypothesis by examining a natural experiment: NIH agreements that reduced the access costs imposed on academics regarding certain genetically engineered mice. We find that increased openness encourages the exploration of more diverse research paths, and does not reduce research into the creation of new genetically engineered mice. Overall, our findings highlight a neglected cost of strong intellectual property restrictions: lower levels of exploration leading to a reduction in the diversity of research output. The second essay analyzes clustering in firms’ layoff behavior and its links to financial markets. We develop a model in which managers delay layoffs during good economic states to avoid damaging their reputation. We test the model’s predictions by comparing the layoff behavior of publicly-listed and privately-held firms, and find that the layoffs of public firms are twice as sensitive to recessions. In addition, we find that the firms which cluster layoff announcements at high frequencies are also more likely to engage in mass layoffs during recessions. Our findings suggest that reputation management is an important driver of layoff policies both at daily frequencies and over the business cycle, and can have significant macroeconomic consequences. The third essay explores the relationship between funding availability and innovative output. I develop a theory of credit constraints in multi-stage research, and predict that greater funding leads to both transitions into the private sector and a shift toward shorterhorizon projects. Analyzing the patent output of a panel of life-science researchers linked to top universities, I find that greater funding availability leads to an increase in transitions from academia to the private sector and a higher quantity of patent output, but a decrease research value, innovative scope, and the time horizon of subsequent applications. These results indicate that profit-motivated funding not only increases the quantity of innovation, but also leads to a significant shift in the type of projects being pursued.

Knowledge is a necessary and critically important factor in generating growth and increased prosperity. The extent to which such effects are materialized depends however on its diffusion and how it transcends into innovation, entrepreneurship and growing firms. This doctoral thesis consists of four papers that examine how labor mobility and innovation strategies influence the performance at the firm level with respect to new ventures, firm level growth and innovativeness.   The first paper provides empirical support of the validity of the knowledge-based spillover theory of entrepreneurship by employing a detailed database. The results indicate that both inter-regional labor inflows and intra-regional labor mobility exert a strong positive effect on entrepreneurship, while inter-regional outflows negatively affect entrepreneurial entry.   The second paper examines the influence of the labor mobility of knowledge workers on innovation at the firm level. New evidence are provided that reveals a positive and significant impact of labor mobility on firms’ innovations measured as patent applications.   In the third paper the influence of labor mobility between multinational enterprises (MNEs) and other firms on innovation is investigated. Looking at firms having different owner structures, empirical evidence are provided that particularly domestically owned MNEs generate strong knowledge spillovers to non-MNEs that translates into innovations.   The fourth paper examines the relationship between innovation and firm growth. We implement a classification of innovations based on whether they are explorative or exploitative. The more radical explorative innovations are shown to have a persistent growth effect in the long term, while exploitative innovation increases the labor demand predominantly in the short term.

The significant contributions of female entrepreneurs to both the social and economic development of their various countries have been recognized over the past two decades. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) found that between 17 and 41 percent of the female adult population set up new businesses in developing economies. However, these females owning businesses in developing economies generally exhibit limited aspirations for growth, with 84.6 percent of the female entrepreneurs indicating that they expect to add fewer than five employees in the coming five years. Moreover, most of the literature on female entrepreneurs in developing economies has focused on the business start-up phase; limited knowledge exists on the post start-up phase. This study addresses this gap by using institutional theory to investigate the development of businesses run by female entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Qualitative interviews were used to collect data from Nigerian female entrepreneurs. The data gathered was analysed using the thematic method. The finding reveal ways in which Nigerian female entrepreneurs transform their creative ideas into products and services that have potential for growth. Nigerian female businesses exhibit growth characteristics through the concern they have for quality and reputation, organizational design, earlier preparation for business growth, response to changes in technology and strong commitment to business success. The major factors facilitating the development of businesses run by Nigerian female entrepreneurs are membership of clubs and societies, a supportive husband, operating from home as well as their network affiliation with their relatives, friends, professionals, religious groups and NGOs. The factors inhibiting the development of businesses run by female entrepreneurs in Nigeria include poor savings culture, inappropriate business practice, lack of qualified artisan workers, lack of honest and reliable staff, balancing business and family, high-based thinking and fear of pseudo growth. The thesis contributes to the institutional theory framework through the addition of components in three key areas: funding barriers (such as female entrepreneurs in polygamous home, lack of ethical mortgage arrangements, lack of inheritance right by women and loan officers’ perception on women lifestyle), profitability (such as high import and export taxes on raw materials, high cost of transportation and illegal fees charges by government officials), and networking (such as support from NGOs and religious bodies). Methodologically, the present study adds to the growing body of qualitative research in entrepreneurship notably to our understanding of the issues that female small business owners in Nigeria face in sustaining and growing their businesses. The current study has practical implications for policy makers and female entrepreneurs. Areas for further research are also identified.

The ability to successfully innovate on a sustained basis is critical in todays hyper-competitive environment characterised by increasingly rapid technological change and shortening product life cycles, and where competitors quickly imitate sources of competitive advantage. At the same time, organisations find managing innovation difficult; both larger firms who fight to avoid being outplayed by smaller, more nimble competitors, and smaller firms struggling to compete against the resources and reach of larger, global competitors. This research develops an assessment instrument designed to assist organisations to improve their ability to innovate. An inductive, case-based methodology is adopted utilising action research techniques to develop the Innovation Capability Assessment instrument. The starting point of the research was an extensive analysis of the corporate entrepreneurship and innovation literature. The literature provided a basis for understanding what question areas might need to be included in such an instrument and led to the development of an initial theoretical framework and a preliminary assessment instrument. The preliminary assessment instrument was further developed and refined via five exploratory case studies. Three subsequent confirmatory case studies were used to validate the instruments effectiveness. The case studies were carried out at Australian organisations operating within a variety of industries and of varying sizes, all of whom were looking to improve their innovation performance. Data was collected through interviews with key members of each organisation and through assessment and action planning workshops involving participants from a cross-section of each organisation. The case studies led to additional assessment questions being added to the instrument, and the rationalisation of others. This research identifies the enablers of organisational innovation and finds that these are common to all the case organisations involved in the fieldwork. The innovation enablers form the basis of the Innovation Capability Assessment instrument that measures innovation performance against 21 questions within three key assessment areas: strategic management of innovation, the internal environment, and a series of innovation competencies. The relative importance of each innovation enabler to the organisation is also assessed. The Innovation Capability Assessment instrument is shown to be very relevant across a variety of organisation types and sizes. In addition, it is useful for an organisation to identify and prioritise weaknesses, and develop actions for improving their innovation capability.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Capitalising on South Africa’s innovation resource through entrepreneurship in the creative industries. In light of the current global challenges as well as local needs and opportunities, there is a need for improved utilisation of South Africa’s innovation resource. Due to designers possessing creativity and the ability to innovate, it is proposed that an increase in the quality and quantity of entrepreneurship activity in the creative sectors will have notable impacts on the sustainability, competitiveness and value of South Africa’s economic activity. It is argued that designers and creative individuals inherently possess a number of entrepreneurial traits and that design education promotes the development of many entrepreneurial behaviours. Thus, it is necessary to offset and maximise these skills with the requisite businessrelated cognitions, attributes and abilities. For this reason, this study looks at the contextual characteristics and needs of small businesses operating in South African design sectors. The objective is to provide relevant and practical suggestions for improving ‘effective’ entrepreneurial activity in the design industries. The current state of entrepreneurship education in a representative sample of South African entrepreneurship courses is analysed. The outcome of this process is used as a base-line in consulting a number of experts in the South African small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector, in order to ascertain the context-specific ‘success factors’ for small businesses in South Africa. Empirical data is then gathered regarding the current state of entrepreneurship and small business content in design education in South Africa. The results of all these processes are analysed in conjunction with the empirical results regarding the individually perceived abilities and attitudes of designers currently operating small businesses in South Africa. The outcome of this analysis is a framework describing the important elements (and relationships between elements) necessary in the development of effective entrepreneurial ability.

Using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, I explored the long-term effect of entrepreneurial activities on economic growth. With both cross-sectional and panel analysis, I found that it is not the overall participation in entrepreneurial activities that relates to economic growth but only the portion engaged in opportunity-motivated entrepreneurship that explains higher growth. On the contrary, the necessity-driven entrepreneurship negatively impacts economic growth. Further, I found that the positive effect of opportunity-motivated entrepreneurship is stronger for countries that are more developed and with better gender balance in entrepreneurial business. The positive effect is also bigger in more recent time periods.
