The deflection of the endplate under the clamping force has a vital effect on fuel cell performance. An optimal cross-sectional shape with a high moment of inertia of the endplate is significant to maximize the bending stiffness of the fuel cell stack. Five cross-sectional shapes (rectangular, round, parabolic, rectangular + round, and rectangular + parabolic) of the typical endplates are proposed. An analytical study on the moments of inertia of the endplates is introduced and analyzed. The maximum moments of inertia of the cross-sections are obtained and displayed in a matrix in thickness and length. The statistical results show that the “rectangular + parabolic” cross-section has the advantage of wide dimensional size while maintaining a high moment of inertia. Finally, the analytical studies are validated by a finite element method (FEM) and the corresponding trends are highly agreed upon. The maximum moment of inertia of the parabolic endplate is 85.71% higher than the rectangular endplate with a thickness of 80 mm, and the corresponding contact pressure variance is 6.15% less than the rectangular endplate. The presented analytical study is significant and effective to optimize the cross-sectional shape of the endplate and provide an endplate design direction for a large fuel cell stack.

A complete system of vibration excitation with force feedback control for piezoelectric inertial exciter is presented. The vibration exciter is constructed and its dynamic model is established composed by piezoelectric stack, inertial mass and pretension institutions based on principle of inertia and reaction. The control system takes software program as the core part. The workflow of the digital step sine sweep control software for exciting force limit is recounted. Variety techniques are utilized to ensure real time and stability in the control process, including synchronization output and acquisition, extracting single tone information from waveform, model reference adaptive scaling control for amplitude of the output waveform. Some tests on a micro driving platform with high stiffness are carried out to verify the actual performance of the system. The results show that the piezoelectric inertial exciter and control system designed are very suitable for step sine sweep vibration excitation and exciting force control in high frequency range.

The present work proposes a non-contact hybrid exciter especially useful for harmonic excitation of lightly damped structures/rotors. In the proposed exciter an electromagnet is placed on a piezoelectric stack and the extension of the piezoelectric stack is made almost equal to the displacement of the structure using a simple tracking control. This largely eliminates stiffness coupling between the structure/rotor and the exciter and non-linearity in the excitation force due to the vibration of the structure/rotor. The stiffness and inertia of the piezoelectric stack is considered in the analysis. A SIMULINK model of the combined structure and the exciter is developed for a full time-domain simulation of the excitation system.

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a popular optimization technique which is inspired by the social behavior of birds flocking or fishes schooling for finding food. It is a new metaheuristic search algorithm developed by Eberhart and Kennedy in 1995. However, the standard PSO has a shortcoming, i.e., premature convergence and easy to get stack or fall into local optimum. Inertia weight is an important parameter in PSO, which significantly affect the performance of PSO. There are many variations of inertia weight strategies have been proposed in order to overcome the shortcoming. In this paper, a new modified PSO with random activation to increase exploration ability, help trapped particles for jumping-out from local optimum and avoid premature convergence is proposed. In the proposed method, an inertia weight is decreased linearly until half of iteration, and then a random number for an inertia weight is applied until the end of iteration. To emphasis the role of this new inertia weight adjustment, the modified PSO paradigm is named Modified PSO with random activation (MPSO-RA). The experiments with three famous benchmark functions show that the accuracy and success rate of the proposed MPSO-RA increase of 43.23% and 32.95% compared with the standard PSO.

This paper exposes the fundamental role that the Drinfel'd double D(k[G]) of the group ring of a finite group G and its twists Dβ(k[G]), β ∈ Z3(G,k*) as defined by Dijkgraaf–Pasquier–Roche play in stringy orbifold theories and their twistings. The results pertain to three different aspects of the theory. First, we show that G-Frobenius algebras arising in global orbifold cohomology or K-theory are most naturally defined as elements in the braided category of D(k[G])-modules. Secondly, we obtain a geometric realization of the Drinfel'd double as the global orbifold K-theory of global quotient given by the inertia variety of a point with a G action on the one hand and more stunningly a geometric realization of its representation ring in the braided category sense as the full K-theory of the stack [pt/G]. Finally, we show how one can use the co-cycles β above to twist the global orbifold K-theory of the inertia of a global quotient and more importantly, the stacky K-theory of a global quotient [X/G]. This corresponds to twistings with a special type of two-gerbe.

Abstract. This paper presents a new model for the piezoelectric actuator (PA) in the context of in the impact drive mechanism (IDM) for the in-pipe inspection application. The feature of the model is capturing the inertia of PA stack in a distributed manner as opposed to the lumped manner in literature. The benefit arising from this feature is a balanced trade-off between computational efficiency and model accuracy. The study presented in this paper included both theoretical development (i.e. the model of the piezoelectric actuator and the model of the entire IDM which includes the actuator) and experimental verification of the model. The study has shown that (1) the inertia of the PA in such a robot will significantly affect the accuracy of the entire model of IDM and (2) the simulation of the dynamic behavior with the proposed model is sufficiently accurate by comparing with the experiment. It is thus recommended that the inertia of the PA be considered in the entire model of the IDM robot. The model is an analytical type, which has a high potential to be used for the model-based control of the IDM robot and optimization of its design for a much improved performance of the IDM system.

Stack-type piezoelectric actuators, which usually consist of several ceramic layers connected in series, are widely used in piezoelectric direct-drive servo valves (PDDSV). However, poor pulling force capacity of this kind of actuators affects the performances of the direct-drive servo valves. This article presents a new type of PDDSV, whose spool-driving mechanism is composed of a set of independent parts that are not fixed together but are in contact with each other. This multi-body contacting spool-driving mechanism provides bidirectional movement of the spool by a preloaded stack-type piezoelectric actuator and a driving disc spring. This prevents the stack-type piezoelectric actuator from bearing the pulling force due to the inertia and friction of the spool. Design of the proposed servo valve is illustrated in detail and its characteristics are also predicted. Based on a nonlinear dynamic model of the multi-body contacting spool-driving mechanism, a comprehensive dynamic simulation model of the proposed PDDSV is established. Static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed PDDSV have been studied experimentally and good agreements between experimental and simulation results are observed. The dynamic performances of the proposed PDDSV are compared with the existing piezoelectric servo valves, which demonstrate that the proposed PDDSV has satisfactory dynamic characteristics for high-frequency applications.

The characteristics of smoke flow in natural ventilation shaft are studied in this paper, Using the computational fluid dynamics software FDS5.0 to build a 3D model of an urban tunnel with a smoking shaft, Large Eddy Simulation model was used to obtain the structure of flow field and the mass flow rate of natural ventilation at different shaft height, The results show that when the shaft height is low, the driving force of exhaust is weak and the exhaust capacity reduces rapidly, the flow state in shaft is controlled by horizontal inertia force; when the shaft height increase to a critical height, the exhaust effect enhance significantly, the flow state in shaft will change to stack effect control.

Loading drops with discrete objects, such as particles and cells, is often necessary when performing chemical and biological assays in microfluidic devices. The vast majority of reported encapsulating methods of particles into monodisperse picolitre droplets are based on micro-fluidic chip using the standard soft lithography technique are necessary. This paper presents a new approach, not based on micro-fluidic chip, for encapsulating particles into droplets actuated by microfluidic pulse inertia force. The polystyrene bead suspension can be ejected out of a tapered glass capillary in mineral oil drop by drop actuated by an enough pulse inertia force which is produced by a hollow PZT stack. The polystyrene beads will be randomly encapsulated in monodisperse picolitre droplets. The tapered glass capillary has the advantages of good chemical resistance, low friction, easy to manufacture and low cost and is suitable for chemical and biological analysis. The minimum size of the spherical droplets can reach 12 μm in diameter and about 1 picolitre in volume. The percentage of the droplets with single 5 μm-diameter polystyrene bead can reach 40% when the droplet size is 40 μm and the concentration of the bead suspension is 1×107 beads per milliliter. The experiment result can be applied in droplet-based single cell encapsulating and analyzing.

We view the inertia construction of algebraic stacks as an operator on the Grothendieck groups of various categories of algebraic stacks. We are interested in showing that the inertia operator is (locally finite and) diagonalizable over for instance the field of rational functions of the motivic class of the affine line q = [A¹]. This is proved for the Grothendieck group of Deligne-Mumford stacks and the category of quasi-split Artin stacks. Motivated by the quasi-splitness condition we then develop a theory of linear algebraic stacks and algebroids, and define a space of stack functions over a linear algebraic stack. We prove diagonalization of the semisimple inertia for the space of stack functions. A different family of operators is then defined that are closely related to the semisimple inertia. These operators are diagonalizable on the Grothendieck ring itself (i.e. without inverting polynomials in q) and their corresponding eigenvalue decompositions are used to define a graded structure on the Grothendieck ring. We then define the structure of a Hall algebra on the space of stack functions. The commutative and non-commutative products of the Hall algebra respect the graded structure defined above. Moreover, the two multiplications coincide on the associated graded algebra. This result provides a geometric way of defining a Lie subalgebra of virtually indecomposables. Finally, for any algebroid, an ε-element is defined and shown to be contained in the space of virtually indecomposables. This is a new approach to the theory of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

Future space mission proposals include many large optical structures which must be capable of maintaining high shape accuracy. Typically, dimensional stability of the order of microns must be maintained over distances of tens of meters. In the past, this stability has been achieved by the use of organic composite materials, such as carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), which are thermally unresponsive, lightweight and stiff. These materials, however, are both expensive and subject to unknown changes in their properties during their space exposure lifetime. Hence, active control allows the use of more conventional engineering materials and the construction of larger and more ambitious structures. In a typical application the two main effects to be controlled are vibrations, due mainly to on-board disturbances, such as torque wheels, and quasi-static disturbances, caused by effects such as temperature gradients or initial lack-of-fit of structural members. This dissertation describes a system which provides 6DOF alignment correction of a payload mounted at the tip of a flexible structure, subject to dynamic and quasi-static disturbances, using a Stewart platform arrangement. The six legs of the platform are formed by a new type of actuator. The actuator uses a stick-slip motion, driven by an inertial mass. The dynamics of the actuator are described and its ability to control both dynamic and quasi-static disturbances is examined, experimentally. The inherently non-linear input-output response of the actuator is quantified and modelled. The flexible structure, used for experimental tests, consists of a pantographic mast. The modal parameters are identified through the use of a numerical model verified by modal tests that have been carried out on the actual structure. Important joint effects are examined and modelled. The modal model is combined with a rigid body model of the Stewart platform to produce a non-linear analytical model of the interaction between the structure and the actuators. This is used to estimate the performance and examine the stability of the closed-loop controlled system.

L'un des moyens pour faire face à la réduction de l'utilisation d'intrants de synthèse est de favoriser durablement les services agro-écologiques de la diversité végétale. Pour cela, l'agriculteur devra adapter ses modes de gestion. Ma thèse s'inscrit dans l'objectif finalisé d'apporter à l'agriculteur, de l'aide à la gestion de cette diversité végétale sur le territoire de son exploitation. Je me suis fixé 2 objectifs de recherche : i) vérifier si les interchamps et le stock semencier constituent des sources d'espèces pour le centre des parcelles agricoles et ii) quantifier l'influence de la dynamique de deux grands groupes de facteurs, représentée sous la forme de trajectoires de parcelles, sur la diversité végétale : les pratiques agricoles et les caractéristiques de la mosaïque paysagère.J'ai mené ce travail sur l'ensemble du parcellaire de l'Installation Expérimentale de l'Inra ASTER Mirecourt, dont les systèmes de production (polyculture-élevage bovin laitier) sont convertis à l'agriculture biologique depuis 2004. J'ai caractérisé la végétation - en place dans les interchamps et au centre des parcelles, et dans le stock semencier - des parcelles en prairies permanentes et en champs cultivés selon deux approches complémentaires : taxonomique au rang de l'espèce et fonctionnelle à partir de sept propriétés rendant compte de la dissémination, de l'établissement et de la survie des espèces végétales. J'ai caractérisé les trajectoires des parcelles, sur une durée de neuf ans, soit à partir des pratiques agricoles mises en œuvre chaque année, soit à partir des caractéristiques annuelles de la mosaïque paysagère. Cette mosaïque correspond aux différentes occupations du sol obtenues à partir de relevés de terrain ou d'enquêtes auprès des exploitants.Je montre que le stock semencier et les interchamps ne constituent pas des sources potentielles d'espèces végétales pour le centre des parcelles, champs cultivés ou prairies permanentes. En revanche, ce sont des refuges importants pour une grande partie des espèces prairiales. Au vu de mes résultats, je fais l'hypothèse que les interchamps sont des puits d'espèces adventices en champs cultivés. J'ai également mis en évidence que le gradient fonctionnel de la végétation prairiale entre la bordure et le centre s'étend jusqu'à 2 m seulement.Enfin, la diversité végétale des parcelles étudiées est principalement influencée par la trajectoire des parcelles selon les caractéristiques de la mosaïque paysagère et par les pratiques agricoles mises en œuvre durant l'année en cours. Les caractéristiques du sol ont un rôle très minoritaire. Ces trois groupes de facteurs expliquent à eux seuls plus des trois quarts de la variabilité de la composition fonctionnelle de la végétation.La gestion de la diversité végétale des parcelles agricoles d'une exploitation peut donc être menée en partie par l'agriculteur. Cependant, compte-tenu des effets de la trajectoire des parcelles selon les caractéristiques paysagères, il est nécessaire de mettre aussi en place une gestion collective de la végétation entre les différents acteurs partageant le territoire
One of the means to offset the decrease of pesticide use is to favour agro-ecological services of plant diversity. In this aim, farmer will have to adapt its farming management. My work partly answers to the following applied objective: to bring to the farmer some advices for the management of plant diversity on the farm territory. I have two scientific objectives: i) to verify if field boundaries and soil seed bank are potential sources of plant species for field centres; ii) to quantify the relative influence of dynamics of two factor groups, characterized as field paths, on plant diversity: farming practices and characteristics of landscape mosaïc.I have carried out this study on the experimental farm of INRA ASTER Mirecourt. Its farming systems (mixed crop-dairy systems) have been converted to organic farming since 2004. I have characterized vegetation - established vegetation in field boundaries and in field centres, and vegetation in the soil seed bank - of permanent grasslands and arable fields with complementary approaches: taxonomical approach based on the species, and functional approach based on seven functional properties about dispersal, establishment and persistence of plant species. I have characterized field paths, along nine years, either from farming practices set up on field, either from annual characteristics of landscape mosaïc. I have represented this landscape mosaïc as a mosaïc of distinct land-uses. All of them and their spatialization have been determined from farmer surveys or landscape observations.My results show that soil seed bank and field bboundaries are not potential sources of plant species for field centres, in both permanent grasslands and arable fields. On the other hand, they are efficient refuges for a large part of grassland species. According to my results, I hypothesize that field boudaries are species sinks in arable fields. I also highlight that functional gradient of grassland vegetation in the field edge, between field margins and field centres, is spread until 2 m only.Finally, plant diversity in studied fields is mainly influenced by field path according landscape mosaïc and by farming practices set up the same year of vegetation sampling. Soil characteristics have a minor influence. These three groups of influent factors explain more than 75 % of the functional composition variability of the vegetation in field centres.The management of plant diversity in agricultural fields of a given farm can be partly reach by the farmer. However, according to the effects of field paths about landscape mosaïc, it is necessary to set up a collective management of plant diversity with all actors sharing the studied territory

Ce travail est une etude theorique et numerique destinee a parachever une methode fiable et performante pour calculer les profils des raies spectrales emises par des ions multicharges plonges dans les plasmas. La description precise des effets des interactions entre les emetteurs et les particules chargees du plasma sur les profils des raies emises est necessaire pour prevoir et interpreter les spectres observes. L'approximation d'impact est utilisee pour modeliser la perturbation des emetteurs par les electrons. Le microchamp electrique ionique induit un elargissement inhomogene des raies dit elargissement stark. Dans le but de tenir compte les effets dus au mouvement des ions, un modele appele le modele de fluctuation de frequence (mff) a ete developpe. Sa mise en oeuvre a resulte en un code fiable et rapide. L'idee clef du mff est de substituer au systeme quantique emetteur perturbe par le microchamp ionique dependant du temps, un ensemble de transitions a deux niveaux habillees par l'effet stark (canaux radiatifs) soumises a une fluctuation stochastique markovienne qui les melange. Ce processus markovien reflete la contribution collective des ions a la fluctuation. D'autre part, les collisions binaires entre les emetteurs et les ions sont prises en compte par un operateur de collisions ioniques. Les fondements du mff ont ete etablis et il a ete valide pour des plasmas peu et moyennement couples par comparaison avec des resultats obtenus par simulation numerique et consideres comme profils de reference.

La spectroscopie électronique basée sur l'effet tunnel donne accès à la densité d'états des électrons (DoS) dans les matériaux conducteurs, et renseigne ainsi en détail sur leurs propriétés électroniques.
Au cours de cette thèse, nous avons développé un microscope permettant d'effectuer la spectroscopie tunnel résolue spatialement (10 nm) de nanocircuits individuels, avec une résolution en énergie inégalée (10 µeV). Cet appareil combine les fonctions de Microscopie par Force Atomique (mode AFM) et de spectroscopie Tunnel locale (mode STM), et fonctionne à 30 mK. Dans le mode AFM, la topographie de l'échantillon est imagée grâce à un diapason en quartz piézoélectrique, ce qui permet de repérer les circuits. La spectroscopie tunnel peut ensuite être faite sur les zones conductrices.
Avec ce microscope, nous avons mesuré la DoS locale dans une structure hybride Supraconducteur-métal Normal-Supraconducteur (S-N-S). Dans un tel circuit, les propriétés électroniques de N et de S sont modifiées par l'effet de proximité supraconducteur. Notamment, pour des fils N courts, nous avons pu observer -comme prédit- la présence d'un gap dans sa DoS, indépendant de la position dans la structure : le “minigap”. De plus, en modulant la phase supraconductrice entre les deux S, nous avons mesuré la modification de ce gap, et sa disparition lorsque la différence de phase vaut π.
Nos résultats expérimentaux pour la DoS, ainsi que ses dépendances en phase, en position, et en longueur de N sont en accord quantitatif avec les prédictions de la théorie quasiclassique de la supraconductivité. Certaines de ces prédictions sont observées pour la première fois.

AbstractIn recent years, feature selection is becoming more and more important in data mining. Its target is that reduce the dimensionality of the datasets while at least maintaining the classification accuracy. There are some researches about chicken swarm optimization algorithm (CSO) applied to feature selection, the effect is extraordinary compared with traditional swarm intelligence algorithms. However, there is a complex search space in the challenging task feature selection, the CSO algorithm still has a default that quickly gets stuck in the local minimum problem. An improved chicken swarm optimization algorithm (ICSO) is proposed in this paper, which introduces the Levy flight strategy in the hen location update strategy and the nonlinear strategy of decreasing inertial weight in the chick location update strategy to increase the global search ability and avoid getting stuck in the local minimum problem. Compared with the other three algorithms on eighteen UCI datasets shows that the ICSO algorithm can greatly reduce the redundant features while ensuring classification accuracy.

The allure of a 3-D cyberspace grows again as communication channels connect a growing number of virtual reality (VR) head mounted displays and interaction-enabling controllers. Computer graphics enable 3-D cyberspace as much as any component critical to providing satisfactory experiences. Historically, the usefulness of 2-D interfaces entrenched when developers demonstrated the feasibility of 3-D cyberspace. Now a certain amount of prolonged inertia seems necessary to promote 3-D graphics to the participation level of 2-D graphics. The HTML 5 stack and other technologies enable 3-D integration into our planetary shared cyberspace. This chapter provides a historical perspective of one researcher’s methods used to provide 3-D web experiences, the lack of critical mass for their use in the past, and how the latest virtual reality integration trajectories will bring a critical mass to the 3-D cyberspace of the future.

The chapter reviews and analyses the scientific inertia, prevailing in western fisheries management system, which affects some general assumptions: equilibrium in fishery ecosystems, large spawning stocks, which produces large new generations; and fishing activities as main and only factor, which have an impact on targeted stock size. Due to those subjective assumptions the author observes that the external environmental and social factors might be disregarded. It appear that the management applied only by systems output data – valid for all sorts of fishing systems – is taken as appropriate approach, which by any means appear to be a method that would not take into consideration many other issues in stock condition and sustainability. This system seems to be supported for years by the scientists, governmental institutions and the sector, in spite of the abundance of books, case studies and researches, published by independent experts, which are attempting to set real dimensions in the official fishery science and its consequent management.

Abstract While granular media were originally thought to be as the natural realization of self-organized criticality, it was soon realized that real sandpiles do not behave in the same way as sandpile models suggest. Instead of a power law distribution of avalanches, one observes a prevalence of system spanning events. This is due to the inertia of the grains. This can be reduced by using elongated grains (such as rice). The avalanches in the ricepiles closely follow the behavior observed in sandpile models. Avalanches are also found in granular media under shear, where, due to the complex grain arrangement and load transfer, one observes an intricate stick-slip behavior.

By the 1990s the pressures on traditional stock exchanges were so intense that inertia was no longer an option. These pressures included the globalization of investment, deregulation, dismantling of capital controls, cheap and rapid communication, and powerful computing, The effect was to undermine the grip that exchanges had once exerted over national stock markets. No longer were the members of exchanges the filter through which buying and selling passed because of the control they exercised over access to both information and the market. Alternative means of trading stocks were proliferating, undermining and then destroying the exclusive privileges long enjoyed by those belonging to stock exchanges. Leading this attack on the power of stock exchanges were the megabanks. As these banks grew in scale and scope, extending their activities around the globe, they were either able to internalize many transactions or trade between themselves. In the process they cut out the exchanges, bypassing, and the charges and restrictions they imposed. There had long been an ambiguous relationship between banks and exchanges, as they were both rivals and heavy users. The combination of the megabanks, interdealer brokers, and electronic markets was rendering exchanges redundant in the 1990s, forcing them to respond through diversification and mergers.

This immanence is temporal as well as spatial, produced by clairvoyance societies that do not punish deviation or alterity but seek to prevent it. This drive toward prevention is defined as the immunological drive of societies, structures, and individuals to remain undamaged in the face of forms of contagion which they at once produce and ward off. The task of philosophy is to carve out space for existence under these conditions. Yet Neyrat specifies that only a certain type of transcendence is useful: transcendence ≈ x, or the motion of a pluralized world of beings toward an outside. Finally, this chapter introduces the idea of a divergence internal to philosophy itself, through the figure of Socrates, who contains within him a split, a space, and the atopia necessary for philosophy.

Over the past few decades the use of portable and wearable electronics has grown steadily. These devices are becoming increasingly more powerful, however, the gains that have been made in the device performance has resulted in the need for significantly higher power to operate the electronics. This issue has been further complicated due to the stagnate growth of battery technology over the past decade. In order to increase the life of these electronics, researchers have begun investigating methods of generating energy from ambient sources such that the life of the electronics can be prolonged. Recent developments in the field have led to the design of a number of mechanisms that can be used to generate electrical energy, from a variety of sources including thermal, solar, strain, inertia, etc. Many of these energy sources are available for use with humans, but their use must be carefully considered such that parasitic effects that could disrupt the user’s gait or endurance are avoided. This study develops a novel energy harvesting backpack that can generate electrical energy from the differential forces between the wearer and the pack. The goal of this system is to make the energy harvesting device transparent to the wearer such that his or her endurance and dexterity is not compromised. This will be accomplished by replacing the strap buckle with a mechanically amplified piezoelectric stack actuator. Piezoelectric stack actuators have found little use in energy harvesting applications due to their high stiffness which makes straining the material difficult. This issue will be alleviated using a mechanically amplified stack which allows the relatively low forces generated by the pack to be transformed to high forces on the piezoelectric stack. This paper will develop a theoretical model of the piezoelectric buckle and perform experimental testing to validate the model accuracy and energy harvesting performance.

Fuel cell stack systems are under intensive development by several manufacturers since they complement heat engines and reduce the ubiquitous dependence on fossil fuels and thus have significant environmental and national security implications. To compete with ICE engines, however, fuel cell system must operate and function at least as well as conventional engines. Transient behavior is on of the key requirements for the success of fuel cell vehicles. The fuel cell system power response depends on the air and hydrogen feed, flow and pressure regulation, and heat and water management. During transient, the fuel cell stack control system is required to maintain optimal temperature, membrane hydration, and partial pressure of the reactants across the membrane in order to avoid degradation of the stack voltage, and thus, efficiency reduction. In this paper, we developed a fuel cell system dynamic model suitable for control study. The transient phenomena captured in the model include the flow characteristics and inertia dynamics of the compressor, the manifold filling dynamics (both anode and cathode), and consequently, the time-evolving reactant partial pressures, and membrane humidity. The effects of varying oxygen concentration and membrane humidity on the fuel cell voltage were included. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the model capability.

The improvement of the thermal coupling between the stack of a thermoacoustic refrigerator and the heat exchangers is necessary to achieve high-efficiency and stable operation. Heat transport by the thermoacoustic effect depends on both the velocity and temperature fields. Inside the stack, it can be described by the linear theory of thermoacoustics. However, departures from linear behaviours are expected near the edges of the stack and in the heat-exchangers due to the generation of vorticity and temperature harmonics. The present work focuses on the experimental characterization of temperature harmonics near the edges of a thermoacoustic stack. Experiments are conducted in an 18cm-long resonator operated with air at atmospheric pressure at the resonance frequency of approximately 464Hz. Drive ratios up to 3% are achieved, which corresponds to temperature oscillation amplitudes up to 2.5K. Temperature measurements are performed using a novel procedure recently proposed by Berson et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 81, 015102 (2010). The instantaneous temperature is measured with a cold wire operated by a Constant-Current Anemometer (CCA). In addition, we record the output signal of the same wire, under the same flow conditions — which is made possible by the periodicity of the acoustic wave — and operated in the heated mode by a Constant-Voltage Anemometer (CVA). During post-processing, the thermal inertia of the cold wire operated with the CCA is corrected using the CVA signal. This procedure does not require any physical properties of the wire such as the diameter. In addition, it does not require the knowledge of a heat-transfer/velocity relationship for the wire. This is all the most important for thermoacoustic systems since no such relationship is available in oscillating flows. Results validate the generation of temperature harmonics near the stack edges. The spatial distributions of the first and second harmonic amplitudes are compared with a one-dimensional model. The model is an extension of an analytical model from the literature [Gusev et al., J. of Sound and Vibration 235, (2000)] that takes into account axial conduction. Experimental results show an excellent qualitative agreement with the model and demonstrate the importance of axial conduction on the nonlinear thermal field behind the stack.

We study the dynamic behavior of a belt-drive system to explore the effect of operating conditions and system moment of inertia on the generation of waves of detachment (i.e., Schallamach waves) at the belt-pulley interface. A self-excitation phenomenon is reported in which frictional fluctuations serve as harmonic forcing of the pulley, leading to angular velocity oscillations which grow in time. This behavior depends strongly on operating conditions (torque transmitted and pulley speed) and system inertia, and differs between the driver and driven pulleys. A larger net torque applied to the pulley generally yields more remarkable stick-slip oscillations with higher amplitude and lower frequency. Higher driving speeds accelerate the occurrence of stick-slip motion, but have little influence on the oscillation amplitude. Contrary to our expectations, the introduction of flywheels to increase system inertia amplified the frictional disturbances, and hence the pulley oscillations. This does, however, suggest a way of facilitating their study, which may be useful in follow-on research.

Turbulent transport and dispersion of inertial particles in fully-developed turbulent vertical pipe flow has been investigated (Reτ = 2,200, based on the friction velocity and the pipe diameter) using two approaches: large-eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) both employing Lagrangian tracking of a dilute suspension of particles (glass beads in air with different Stokes’ numbers, namely 0.022 and 2.8). Detailed numerical simulations are performed in order to: (a) assess the capabilities of these two approaches to match the experimental measurements of Arnason and Stock [1, 2]; and (b) validate the extension of the stochastic approach based on Langevin modeling used in a RANS framework to the generation of sub grid-scale fluctuating velocities as seen by solid particles in LES. Results for the particle dispersion coefficient and preferential distribution of particles in different sections of the vertical pipe as well as streamwise and radial particle velocities, are computed and compared to the results of the experimental measurements. The following conclusions are drawn. (a) Both RANS and LES, using stochastic modeling for the fluid velocity, are seen to predict reasonably well the dispersion of solid particles with different Stokes’ numbers in a high Reynolds number, nonhomogeneous and anisotropic turbulent flow. (b) The extension of stochastic modeling based on the Langevin equation to the construction of the subgrid-scale fluctuating velocity field as seen by the particles is successful; it contributes to the better results obtained, compared to RANS results, especially for those predicted for the small particles. (c) As shown in experimental results [1, 2] and demonstrated by theoretical studies [3, 4], the numerical predictions supported the conclusions that large inertia particles can disperse faster than small inertia particles, depending on the combined effects of inertia and drift parameters.
