With India’s robust, neo-liberal economic growth and the growing buying power of the Indian consumers, cricket, a popular sport in India, too, has been transformed. Indian Premier League is a short-format, high-value cricket league that features major international cricket stars who come to India to join one of the eight franchised teams that take part in this competitive tournament. Using the sociological framework of glocalization, this article argues that the intersection of the global economic forces and the local culture that celebrates cricket has created a glocal space for its performance, and with the mediation of communication technology, it has widened the viewership globally. Infused with Indian money, motifs, and meanings, a new spectacle of consumption is on offer. The emergent consumer culture has transformed the game itself, adding a showbiz quality to it. Through the analysis of Indian Premier League cricket, this article sheds light on the consequences of cultural globalization, at once homogenizing and heterogenizing, an essential characteristic of glocalization.

ABSTRACT Cricket is the most prevalent and popular sport in India. Its expansion, including recent inclusion of T20 format over the last decade, has placed greater demands on cricketers and led to an increased incidence of injuries worldwide. Worldwide, in all forms of sport, successful injury prevention requires ongoing injury surveillance as a fundamental process. Unfortunately, injury surveillance is not the norm in Indian sports. We do not have any specific documentation protocol for documenting injury patterns, causative mechanisms, and analyzing the incidence of different cricket-related injuries in players of different ages except the Aclass test players. Despite being the most popular team sport in India, there is just a single publication in the medical literature reporting cricket injuries from India. This article reviews the burden of cricket injuries in both national and international perspective and emphasizes the potential and need of an injury surveillance program to improve cricket sport in India. Twenty20 format of cricket is a fast track ball game compared to the other formats of cricket viz. Test and One-day International (50-over a side). The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a national franchise based Twenty20 cricket tournament initiated by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In this format, each batsman tries to score maximum runs in minimum balls. This fact increases the probability of dismissal of a batsman. As fall of wickets leads to the loss of resources of the batting side, thus it has an impact on the result of the game. This study tries to examine the survival ability of Indian and overseas batsmen in IPL 2012 season using a probabilistic model. The proposed model can be used to forecast the survival rate of the batsmen on the pitch in other format of cricket also, while the game is in progress. The findings of the study can be used to arrange the batting order of a team in Twenty20 cricket based on the match situation.

The purpose of this paper is to understand the impact of various elements of ads like ad timings, ad placement, ad type, ad frequency, duration of the ad, celebrity’s ad endorsement influence, etc., on sports fans’, in particular, cricket fans mood and attitude during a live sporting event like Indian Premier League (IPL). The study involves a mix of in-depth telephonic interviews and Microsoft Teams video call interviews of 35 sports, especially cricket enthusiasts. A snowball sampling method was used. Based on the respondents’ viewing experience of a live T20 cricket match, the impact of various ads’ elements on their attitude change while viewing the live cricket match was ascertained. The study suggests that individual responses to an advertisement vary based on its elements like type, location, timings, frequency, duration, and celebrity’s ad endorsement influence during the cricket match. The paper has a limitation with references related to the Indian context, as most of the work has been done with a different set of people (other than Indian) and on a different sport. The research seems to be one give insights about cricket fans’ mood and their perception of advertisements in a developing country like India.

Sports career is brief and sport career transition (SCT) is a well-researched topic to see how players deal with it. Cricket is the most popular sport in India and the game is evolving thick and fast. Cricket has become an all season sport barring rainy and snowy conditions. Plethora of options are now available to the players which includes test cricket, one day international (ODI), twenty 20 international (T20I), Indian Premier League (IPL) and similar franchise-based leagues on T20 and T10 along with first-class domestic cricket. With this deluge in cricket, it is pertinent to study career progression of cricketers. IPL, despite a brand value of US$6.3 billion, is often criticized for bringing players into limelight too soon, paving way for playing test matches and fading even sooner into oblivion being unable to cope with volume and variety of cricket. The present article analyses Indian cricketers’ career progression pattern using hierarchical clustering analysis, and it also investigates if cricketers are graduating faster from domestic to test cricket using two-sample t-test.

ABSTRACT Background ‘What do they know of cricket who only cricket know?’—CLR James. Cricket is one of the oldest major international team sport, however, the integration of sports medicine research into the cricketing set-up has been relatively new. Cricketing nations, such as Australia, England and South Africa, have been at the forefront and have shown an increased interest to understand this game from a scientific point of view. On the contrary, in a country where cricket is like a religion it is sad to say that the lack of scientific rigor still echoes in the Indian dressing room. Nevertheless, a fresh approach brought in by foreign medical practitioners has planted the seed in local brains to bring the concept of sports medicine into the Indian cricketing fraternity. Objectives This article will explore scientific research that has been conducted on various areas in cricket and compare the role of sports science in Indian cricket and finally identify areas of future concern which would help to bridge the gap between sports medicine and Indian cricket. When C.L.R. James published Beyond a Boundary in 1963 – forever attaching the sport of cricket; its rituals, its rhythms and its customs to the construction of a West Indian identity – it was a time of great hope, the early dawn of the postcolonial era and concurrent with the rise of constructions of culture being framed as the sum of everyday lived experience. The cricket-playing Caribbean (the West Indies) was a different place and cricket was a different game. The intervening half century has seen the monetization of sport, the globalization of the media and, most significantly, paradigmatic shifts in the presentation of the sport of cricket in step with a continued decline in the fortunes of the West Indies cricket team. These shifts have had tremendous impact on the region as the West Indies, the geographical outliers in the cricket-playing world, have become further isolated as sub-par performances have lessened the team’s value in this age of commodification. In cricketing terms, the corridor of uncertainty in which West Indies cricket finds itself is indicative of the region’s inability to rise to the demands of globalization. Given the dominant assumption in postcolonial studies that in all the ex-colonies and dominions the imperial past strongly informs the present – through analysis of mediated sport in the region and the impact of the monetization of cricket on West Indian players and consequently on the regional team, this article seeks to bring to an end the conflation of cricket and West Indian identity and, further, questions the relevance of such an identity in the absence of a West Indian nation.

ABSTRACT Introduction The understanding of cricket related injuries is still in its infancy in India with very limited surveillance data published from the subcontinent. Objective This is a prospective observational study on the epidemiology of orthopedic injuries in Indian cricket players. Materials and methods This study included cricketers of an elite North Indian cricket team. The study covered a period of 1 year, comprising one playing season and one off season. The player types were categorized by Orchard's injury definitions, and the term ‘All Rounder’ was introduced. Results Ninety-five male players who fulfilled inclusion criteria sustained 48 significant and 12 insignificant injuries. Injury incidence documented by us (3.27 per 10,000 hours of play) was significantly lower than Australian figures (24.2 injuries/10,000 playing hours). These players did not have any ‘off day’ from the game, leading to limited rest, which was different from international standards. Bowlers sustained the most severe injuries, specifically of the lower limb, while fielders had increased risk of sustaining upper limb injury. Fast bowlers had increased risk of sustaining back trauma. Injuries were also sustained during practice and due to poor ground conditions. Conclusion Orchard's internationally accepted definitions of cricket injury need to be modified for the Indian scenario, where ‘off days’ are not observed, and many injuries which keep players from the game occur in unsupervised practice. This may influence overall incidence and prevalence rates. How to cite this article Dhillon MS, Soni RK, Aggarwal S, Dhillon H, Prabhakar S. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the emotions and sentiments related to the outcome of the sporting event influence the investment making process. Design/methodology/approach This study uses the data on stock prices of firms sponsoring the Indian premier league (IPL) teams and data on Indian stock market. The event-study frameworks along with autoregressive moving average and GMM regression are employed to empirical quantify the impacts of the performance of the IPL teams on the stock market returns of the sponsors’ stocks and response of Indian stock market to the outcome of T-20 international matches. Findings The paper finds that the team winning IPL title in a season has a positive impact on the returns of the sponsors’ stocks of a particular team, whereas loss of team has a negative impact on returns. The outcome of the cricket matches played by team India in the T-20 has a negligible effect on the Indian stock market. Practical implications The finding of the study implies the coexistence of emotions and rationality at different points in time and the relevance of adaptive market hypothesis to explain such time-varying behavior. Originality/value The present investigation is first of its kind to test whether the performance of the IPL cricket team can influence the stock returns of the sponsors. This research shows that sentiment related to sports event such as cricket influences the decision-making process and thus affects underlying stock prices.

Summary This article explores the interplay of sport, politics and public diplomacy through a case study of the first ‘Indian’ cricket tour of Great Britain in 1911, an extraordinary venture peopled by an improbable cast of characters. Led by the young Maharaja Bhupindar Singh, the newly enthroned ruler of the princely state of Patiala, the team contained in its ranks cricketers who were drawn from different Indian regions and religious communities. The article examines the politics of this intriguing cricket tour against a wider backdrop of changing Indo-British relations and makes three key points. First, it suggests that the processes of ‘imperial globalization’ that were presided over by the British in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries marked an important epoch in the evolving relationship between sport and diplomacy. In particular, it highlights the role of sporting tours as instruments of public diplomacy in the age of empire. Second, it shows how the organization of the 1911 tour reflected the workings of a trans-national ‘imperial class regime’ that had developed around cricket in colonial India from the late nineteenth century onwards. Finally, the article considers the symbolic significance that came to be attached to the tour, both in imperial Britain and in colonial India.

Cricket is the most popular game at present not in only in India but also in the Indian Subcontinent. The controversies and the ups and downs of the willow game have been the subject of discussion by the cricket chroniclers and the lovers of the game in times gone by. The present study aims at examining the level of motivation among players, nature and role of cooperation from academic institutions such as the college or the university, from the family, need for a different academic course structure for players and fairness in the selection process. Using the information through a sample of 320 student cricketers, the role of the University of Delhi in nurturing the talent and producing some outstanding cricketers of national and international levels has been probed. Absence of trainers along with commensurate infrastructure seems to be the bane in developing top cricketers in the Colleges and the Universities. Forced to give major part of their time to the sport, it is tough for the sportspersons to focus on academics. Continuous training and travel with consequent missed classes makes it tough to secure good credits in class attendance and internal assessment which results in adverse performance in semester examinations. The sports centric curriculum and sufficient credit for performance in sports with adequate, flexible teaching schedules, improved training and sports infrastructure in colleges and the universities in India can only raise the standard of cricket and other sports.

This paper examines the phenomenon of stacking in the sport of cricket. It is argued that cricket is a particularly revealing case study of “race” relations in Britain because of the diversity of “racial” groups that play it and the variety of national identities that are expressed through it. Data presented show that the two minority “racial” groups in British cricket are stacked in different positions; Asians as high-status batters, and Blacks as low-status bowlers (pitchers). The author uses the work of Norbert Elias to argue that stacking can best be explained, not in terms of positional centrality, but through a developmental analysis of cricket that focuses on historical class relations and Imperial relations in the Caribbean and Indian subcontinent.

The article highlights the apparent anomaly of the rise of cricket in the Arab-Gulf region. It argues that the evolution of cricket in the six Gulf Cooperative Council countries (GCC) from essentially an expatriate sport to its status today, with evident strengths and weaknesses, reflects the quality of the consolidation of the South Asian community, and especially of the Indian diaspora. The relationship between sports and the diaspora remains relatively unexplored. Using an empirical and comparative method, the paper adds to the current literature by studying the link between cricket and the diaspora in the Gulf region.

Cooper’s 12-minute run test (CRT) for prediction of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) has not yet been explored in Indian sportspersons. Present investigation was conducted to evaluate the applicability of CRT in Indian cricketers. 75 male and 45 female cricket players were randomly recruited from reputed cricket academies of Kolkata, India and were randomly assigned into the study group (male = 45, female = 25) and confirmatory group (male = 30, female = 20). Incremental cycle ergometer exercise was used for direct estimation of VO2max by expired gas analysis and the indirect prediction of VO2max (PVO2max) was performed by CRT method. The current protocol of CRT was found to be inapplicable in both the genders of Cricketers due to a significant difference between PVO2max and VO2max and a large limit of agreement between PVO2max and VO2max in the study groups. A significant correlation (r = 0.76 in males and r = 0.79 in females, p<0.001) was depicted between VO2max and distance covered in CRT. Regression equations were computed based on the significant correlation. The application of these equations in the confirmatory groups revealed an insignificant difference between PVO2max and VO2max and narrow limits of agreement. Standard errors of the estimate of the regression norms were also minimal. Therefore, modified equations are recommended for CRT application for valid and precise evaluation of cardiorespiratory fitness in terms of VO2max in male and female Indian cricketers.

One thing is certain. Beyond a Boundary is neither a ghost-written celebrity Obiography, nor a cash-in publication following the economic rise of the postcolonials in cricket, particularly the Indian subcontinent. A stark contrast to the lassitude and superficiality of the contemporary sports writing-often a compliant servant of the profit mongers, C.L.R. James’ (1901-1989) Beyond a Boundary explores the place of cricket in the Caribbean and England, arguing that what happened inside the “boundary line” in cricket affected and was a reflection of life beyond it. The new edition of C.L.R. James’ 1963 book came out recently to celebrate fifty years since its first publication, and fittingly at a time when cricket has become a multi-million dollar industry with far-reaching social and economic ramifications seemingly as never before: corruptions are abound, books cooked, matches fixed, performances enhanced and much more. James has not talked about all these issues, but points out, carefully and provocatively, how the sport mirrors the complex nature of the society and the time in which it lives. During the course of the book’s 260 odd pages, he has combined his incisive sociological analysis and fervent passion for cricket, which in his words, “neither cricket reminiscences nor autobiography.”

In 1982, Pawlak set up a fresh approach to deal with uncertainties namely rough set theory, Multiple-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) first traced by Benjamin Franklin in 17th century. Several researchers did significant contribution to MCDM thereafter. An assignment problem involves what happens to the effective function when each of a number of sources is associated with the same number of destinations. Using MCDM, Rough matrices and Assignment model we are inducing an idea to pick Best’11 in all three formats (Test, One Day Internationals (ODI), Twenty20 International matches (T20I)) in the game of cricket with players from two nationals. Using the existing data, we are providing best batting position for any player to maximize team’s run. In addition, based on the preprocessing of informations, we are bringing some new indices to pick Indian squad for the 2019 World Cup cricket held in England from May 2019 to July 2019. After making a selection from our framework, we will compare the list of selected players by Board of Cricket Control Board in India (BCCI) and giveaway the percentage of similarity between the our selection against BCCI’s selection. We pick 11 players after selecting 15 players from 24 players to formulate the assignment model and offer the best batting order to optimize team’s run.

This article examines customer discrimination considering a unique data set from the most popular sports industry in India, that is, cricket. Relying on Playing XI vote in the Indian Premier League, we analyze whether supporters have different personal preferences toward players based on their location of origin and religion. In contrast to the often-heated rhetoric surrounding discrimination and previous literature, we overall do not find any discrimination in voting. We instead find a positive preference for popular foreign players. Our results further suggest that if we examine discrimination by controlling for proxy productivity characteristics, it may produce bias results.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze user-generated comments posted on social media while live matches were being played during the Cricket World Cup 2015. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from Yahoo! Cricket (YC), a website that allows people to submit comments during live matches. The comments were qualitatively analyzed using the grounded theory approach. Findings The key finding of this paper is that people like to consume live sporting events in an online social setting rather than as isolated individuals. In addition, the use of the grounded theory approach helped uncover several new findings related to people’s use of social media during live matches. Research limitations/implications Since this paper studied the case of the Cricket World Cup 2015 and collected data from YC, caution is advocated in generalizing its findings. Originality/value Scholarly interest on the use of social media during live sporting events is growing. Building on such works, this paper highlights how user-generated comments posted during the Cricket World Cup 2015 – mostly by individuals within the Indian subcontinent – intersected with broader issues such as culture, identity, politics and religion.

The purpose of this study was to highlight the effects of the environment on spin bowling tactics in test match cricket. The speed differences employed by Indian and Australian spin bowlers in home and away test matches were examined over a nine-year period. Eleven test matches played in Australia and 10 test matches played in India from 2007 to 2015 were analysed (3413 spin overs). During this time, 12 spin bowlers represented Australia (mean age 28.0 ± 3.7 years) and 13 represented India (mean age 29.1 ± 4.1 years). In each environment, the home team’s spin bowlers were more successful than the away team’s bowlers. There was no difference in mean delivery speed between the teams when competing in either country’s conditions. However, success in Australia was associated with less variability of delivery speed. In contrast, success in India was associated with greater variability of delivery speed. This would suggest that neither team changed this aspect of their delivery tactics to suit the opposition’s home environment, demonstrating the difficulty that even elite spin bowlers experience in adapting to unfamiliar conditions. These findings highlight the need for diversity in practice conditions by creating representatively designed learning environments to help spin bowlers acquire the adaptive behaviours required in test match cricket.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a deterministic model for setting the target in T-20 Cricket by the team batting first. Mathematical tools were used in model development. Recursive function and secondary data statistics of T-20 cash rich cricket tournament Indian Premier League (IPL) such as runs scored in different stages, fall wickets in different stages, and type of pitch are used in developing the model. This model was tested at 120 matches held IPL 2016 and 2017. This model had been proved effective by comparing with the models developed earlier. This model can be a useful tool to the stakeholders like coach and captain of the team for adopting better strategy at any stage of the match. For future research, this model can be useful in framing a regulation work by policy makers at both national and international cricket board by deriving the target score during interruptions.

Cricket is a bat-and-ball team sport, played by two teams with eleven players on each side. Recently, a new format of cricket called ‘Twenty20’ (T20) was introduced, which has increased the excitement, fan following, and business opportunities in cricket. In 2008, Indian Premier League (IPL) was created with eight city-based franchises. Two more franchises were added in 2010. The focus of this case is on the selection of the playing eleven for the team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the most valued brand name among IPL franchises. Thirty five players were on the KKR team roster in the first two editions of the IPL. Unlike many other sports, the playing eleven cannot be changed in a cricket game once the game starts. The case aims to strengthen students’ ability to mathematically formulate a real life “yes-or-no” type decision. Binary Integer Programming (BIP) is a suitable choice for modeling “yes-or-no” type decisions. The case, if provided with International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings data and in-house point system, will be appropriate for an undergraduate level management science/operations research class. The same case will be suitable at graduate level, if students are expected to gather ICC rankings data and build in-house point system. There are competing constraints that would lead to discussions about infeasibility. The case also points out the importance of interpretation of the solution and user friendliness of the model from an end user’s perspective.

Problem/Relevance: This study is motivated by psychological evidence of a strong connection between sporting event outcomes and mood. To evaluate this connection, we analyze the Indian stock market reaction to sudden changes in investors’ mood captured by India’s cricket results. By focusing on a rarely studied mood variable and a very infrequently studied stock exchange, this study adds to our understanding of the association between sporting event outcomes and mood. Research Objective/Questions: In this study, we investigate the impact of cricket wins and losses on the Bombay Stock Exchange. We hypothesize that cricket wins or losses will drive investors’ mood substantially and unambiguously so that the game outcomes will be powerful enough to impact asset prices. We also evaluate the hypothesis that losses are psychologically more powerful than wins. Methodology: We analyze the daily data from the Bombay Stock Exchange using the methodology of Edmonds et al. (2007). This methodology has the advantages of capturing the Bombay Stock Exchange stock returns timevarying volatility through a GARCH model. Major Fundings: Our findings show that cricket wins and losses do not impact the Bombay Stock Exchange. On the exchange, stock prices reflect relevant information. Our results are thus consistent with the Efficient Market Hypothesis. Implication(s): Our results imply that on the Bombay Stock Exchange, cricket wins and losses cannot be reliably used by investors and portfolio managers to achieve returns in excess of the average market returns on a risk-adjusted basis.

Background. Pace bowling is the most injury susceptible position in cricket due to repeated high intensity maneuvers. Previous studies on pace bowlers have considered anthropometric, biomechanical, and kinesiological factors for deciphering the injury etiology. Study purpose. The purpose of this study was to prospectively investigate the association of body composition parameters with the incidence of musculoskeletal injuries among pace bowlers in cricket. Materials and methods. A total of 44 healthy professional male pace bowlers (N=44; Age: 22.89±4.5 years; Height: 176±9 cm; Body weight: 76.34±8.09 kg; BMI: 21.4±3.1) were recruited from various cricket academies. They were assessed on anthropometrics, body composition, and aerobic fitness before the start of Indian cricket season (typically mid-September). Any non-contact sports injury accounting for significant time loss during the season was recorded followed by assessment of change in body composition status among injured and non-injured pace bowlers. Results. We found hamstring injury as the most prevalent injury (05/12). Lower back injury accounted for highest severity with time loss of 48 matches. Injured pace bowlers underwent higher training volume (hours/day; p=.009) prior to injury incidence, were significantly heavier, and had greater volume of total body water. All the pace bowlers gained significant amount of fat-free mass (FFM) from pre- to post-season. Conclusions. Higher training workload and higher body weight were associated with more injury risk among pace bowlers. Further research accommodating other predictive factors of body composition and psychomotor learning must be carried out to precisely predict injury risk among pace bowlers in cricket.
