Are experiences with migration affecting culturally specific gendered practices, roles, attitudes, and ideologies of Mexican women and men? Which experiences reinforce patriarchy? Which experiences transform patriarchy? This thesis proposes that Mexican immigrant women will subscribe to and enact different gendered behaviors depending upon their perception of gendered gains. Various factors, such as time of arrival, previous experiences with negative machismos, and workforce participation affect how they construct gendered identities. The context where bargaining occurs-whether itwas the home, the community, or the workplace - inform women of what strategies they need implement in order to negotiate with patriarchy. This study employs two models, Deniz Kandiyoti's concept of the patriarchal bargain and Sylvya Walby' s theoretical position of patriarchy fomenting unique gender inequalities within different contexts, to process the different ways Mexican immigrant women perceive and perform gender. The author analyzed data collected from participant observation activities, focus groups, and interviews with women of Mexican descent living in new immigrant destinations. Mexican immigrant women's narratives of negotiations and transformations with male partners indicated equal adherence of traditional and nontraditional gendered behaviors in order to build satisfactory patriarchal bargains. In addition, data suggested that identity formation was the outcome of migratory influences; it also indicated that progressive ideas about gender were salient before migrating to the U.S .. Findings also suggested that reassured masculine identities, due to the stable work options open to Mexican immigrant males in this area, became a factor in the emergence and adherence of distinct gendered attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions by women in this study.

This study examined Americans' perceptions of immigrants as threats and their implications on immigration policy views as well as immigrants' actual involvement in crime. Images of immigrant groups result from the perceived threats they pose to the crime rate, economy, political power, and nativism (Blumer 1958). I argued that these perceptions result in opposition to immigrants and support for stronger measures to exclude undocumented immigrants. Of special interest for this study was the "criminal immigrant" stereotype. Previous studies demonstrate that immigrants are not highly crime-involved even when they experience additional stressors during their adaptation processes. Yet, according to Agnew's (1992) general strain theory, immigrants may be prone to criminality due to additional strains they experience while adjusting to the new country. However, many immigrants, through transnational activities maintain ties with family and friends overseas, thereby making the immigration experience less stressful. I argued in this study that immigrants' underinvolvement in crime is partly due to their transnational ties, which may serve a protective role as social support and thus condition the effects of strains. To examine the implications for policy views of perceptions of immigrants and immigrants' actual crime involvement, the 2004 General Social Survey (GSS) and the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey (CILS) were used. The hypotheses were tested by conducting univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses. Overall, perceived immigrant threat affects opposition to immigrants and support for stronger measures to exclude undocumented immigrants. Among the various groups examined, the levels of opposition to immigrants differ from that of support for stronger measures to exclude undocumented immigrants. In terms of immigrants and crime, immigrants were not disproportionately involved in crime, as is widely believed by the American public. Contrary to hypotheses, however, immigrants' strains were not significant predictors of crime, and transnational ties did not condition the effects of strains on crime. It is recommended that future research be designed using more comprehensive data set(s) that represent and reflect the growing immigration population in the United States. Particularly, research should include measurements of micro-level social dynamics specific to immigrants such as additional measures of transnational ties and resilience.

In an ever-globalizing world, societies comprised of myriad people and cultures are quickly becoming the norm rather than the exception. In societies made up of culturally diverse, religiously pluralistic and disparate people, an added layer of complexity becomes apparent when attempting to integrate multiple cultures into a single society. Germany, in its reconstruction effort following World War II, faced such an integration challenge when a massive influx of Turkish migrants arrived as part of a "foreign worker" agreement. The introduction of a large and culturally diverse immigrant population made cultural understanding of paramount importance. Culture is an intangible element that can be difficult to quantify in political, social, or economic terms. As such, understanding culture and the peaceful coexistence of multiple cultures requires an examination beyond traditional perspectives. The implementation of conflict resolution theories and viewing situations from a conflict resolution perspective enables the extra layer of complexity that can occur within culturally diverse societies to be unpacked and better understood. Specifically, the goal of this thesis was to examine the integration challenges for Turkish immigrants in Germany while at the same time looking for opportunities to learn from the challenges facing societies attempting to implement immigration and integration policies in order to promote the coexistence of multiple cultures. The thesis concludes by offering directives or recommendations, formulated from the findings in this study, for multicultural societies facing integration challenges.

This study researched Armenian immigrants ability to acculturate to life in the United States. Armenian immigrants face a number of challenges when first arriving to the United States and adjusting to American culture. The challenges stem from relational areas such as communication, family interaction, and social interaction. In order to explore the challenges and successes Armenian immigrants faced during the acculturation process, I researched the plight of recent Armenian immigrants adjustment to life in the United States. The qualitative study I conducted consisted of 20 open-ended interviews of Armenian immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least 5 years. The data collected from this study as well as information gathered from Armenian cultural research and acculturation study research reveal culture specific information of the Armenian acculturation process. I was able to apply and analyze the data I collected through the major acculturation theories by people such as Berry, Kim, Ward, Bochner, and Furnham. The study indicates that Armenian immigrant's have challenges to acculturate due to living in the United States due to: ethnic traditions, communication styles, and family and social interaction.

Historically, immigrants to Canada arrive, learn the language, search for satisfying work and lead productive, meaningful lives. However, the barriers are immense. Recently, Vancouver Community College at the King Edward Campus has tried to meet the needs of adult immigrant learners. The diagnosis of learners needs has a high priority in adult education. The general form of the Education Participation Scale (EPS) describes reasons why people partake in adult education programs. However, because the data collected to complete the general EPS was drawn from a middle class population, it did not reflect the reasons tendered by disadvantaged learners. Also, the language used on the instrument was too difficult. Subjects in this study were Adult Basic Education (A.B.E.) students, enrolled in programs at Vancouver Community College, predominately at King Edward Campus. During the first step 150 students were asked about why they were enrolled. These reasons were listed, edited and combined with the general form of the E.P.S. Care was taken to ensure that the items and the instructions could be read at a grade seven level. The 120 item instrument was then administered to a different group of 257 participants at the college where the items had originated. Factor analyses produced a seven factor solution of 42 items with each factor containing 6 items. The seven factors are: Communication Improvement; Social Contact; Educational Preparation; Professional Advancement; Family Togetherness; Social Stimulation; Cognitive Interest. For test retest reliability purposes the instrument was administered twice (with a four week interval between administrations) to 63 participants. Reliability coefficients for each factor, as well as the entire scale, were calculated. The instrument was deemed to be reliable over time. The motivational orientations of people from Canada were compared to those from the Middle East, Asia, East Europe, West and South Europe, Latin and South America and other places. There were significant differences in the mean scores (by country of birth) on the Communication Improvement, Professional Advancement, Social contact and Family Togetherness factors. It appears that a case can be made for arranging unique educational experiences for people with different motivational profiles.

Declining fertility in developed countries along with rising number of immigrants and different fertility behavior exhibited by the immigrants make the immigrants’ fertility an interesting topic in field of demography. However most of the studies on immigrants’ fertility consider the female immigrants as their subject on the assumption that they represent the immigrants’ fertility. This study took another perspective and tries to study male immigrants’ fertility. Spanish Immigrants’ Survey 2007 was used to see how the different migration related factors affect the male immigrants’ fertility. Poisson regression was applied on a sample of 3797 childless males who are 16 or older. This study found tentative support to selection hypothesis but no clear support to adaptation hypothesis on male fertility behaviors. There exist differences in the fertility between male immigrants from different regions. Effect of education, number of parent’s siblings and mother language on male immigrants’ fertility was also analyzed.

The work involves an architectural design for a facility located on The Mall in Washington, District of Columbia. The Museum of American Immigrants is a proposed facility for housing the exhibits regarding immigration sequences and their development that make up the United States of America. The ethnographic nature of the work, its artifacts, their collection, exhibition, preservation, and mutations is seen as a means to nurture our better understanding of the on-going struggle with the experiment called America. With reference to current theories of museum architecture, examples of other similar museum buildings, site constraints, and programming, the work strives towards the integration of architecture and purpose. The building is expected to provide layers of experience in both spatial and ethnic terms. The precise geometry defines the spaces and voids, while the way the exhibits are organized defines the building as a framework of displays. The design method used in developing the building called The Museum of American Immigrants has involved a personal understanding in working with the contemporary design Vocabulary and programmatic concerns to create a learning environment for the Visitors while making every effort to achieve contextual balance and harmony required by the surroundings.

Most immigrants have to adjust their lives to living in a new country, especially when moving from an Eastern to a Western society. Chinese immigrants may face multiple difficulties, including cultural differences and the English language barrier, which are a particularly problem for older immigrants. To overcome these difficulties, many Chinese immigrants either form new community groups or join those currently operating. Normally, Chinese community groups provide a wide range of activities for members. The literature (e.g., Diener, 1984; Cantor & Sanderson, 1999; Csikszentmihalyi, 1975) provides some understanding of the value for new immigrants in attending these group activities. Participating members report improved life satisfaction within new society and have a more positive outcome as a result of their involvement. However, the magnitude of the influence life satisfaction and well-being is not as clear. This research aimed to better understand the relationships between participation in community group activities and the life satisfaction and well-being of participating members. A quantitative research method was adopted for this study to investigate the relationships between the variables. The study utilised a questionnaire that focused on specific demographic characteristics of participants, a 5-item life satisfaction measure (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985), a short 18-item measure (Ryff, 1989a) of the six dimensions of psychological well-being, and on other factors likely to impinge on life satisfaction and well-being. The 7-point agreement scale asked participants the extent to which they agreed or disagreed with the statements. The questionnaire was offered to participants in both English and Chinese. Questionnaires were completed by 600 Chinese-speaking immigrants from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore who were participants in educational activities and/or other activities offered through 21 different Chinese community groups in Brisbane. Four hundred took part in 20 different educational group activities, and 200 in 25 different non-educational group activities. Most participants were female, and approximately two thirds were over 50 years of age. Using AMOS, a number of structural equations models (SEMs) were tested to investigate the conceptually proposed links between the various variables. This study supports other literature, finding that both educational and general activities provided by the community groups positively influence the participating members' life satisfaction and feelings of well-being. The majority of participants in this study reported that they considered participating in community group educational activities (74.2% agreed), and general activities (66.6%), had the most impact on their life satisfaction and well-being. Most participants (70%) found that community group activities, both educational and general, were interesting. However, only around 53% of them claimed to have achieved their goals in these activities. The findings of this study indicate the complexity of the influences on life satisfaction and well-being levels facing this cohort of Chinese immigrants. Although results suggest that demographic variables such as year of migration and employment status have a greater influence on life satisfaction and well-being than educational activities and general activities, the outcomes of this study support the conclusion that the participating members have benefited from the variety of programs offered by Chinese community groups.

The aim of this study is to develop an understanding of Cape Town's foreign African immigrants by looking at the profile, character and role of immigrant associations and how they shape survival strategies as well as possible paths to the integration of African immigrants. The thesis seeks to develop an understanding of the mediating role played by Cape Town's African foreign immigrant organisations. I also look at the transnational activities of these organizations. I selected Cape Town because it prides itself on liberal values of toleration, diversity and non-racialism while at the same time branding itself as an African City. The City of Cape Town has no comprehensive policy that protects or promotes the immigrants’ interests. The study of the agency and organisations of foreign African immigrants has been singularly neglected by scholars who have been mostly concerned with understanding why South Africans are xenophobic. This study is largely qualitative with life stories interviews that shed light on the context of exit and reception of African immigrants in Cape Town and reveals the hardship immigrants endure and the problems they face in their efforts to integrate into South African society. The thesis shows the different kinds of exclusions African immigrants face in both private and public spaces and highlights also the role of immigrant's organizations in negotiating space and dealing with xenophobic attacks on their community members. My findings concur with the work of key scholars such Alejandro Portes. Immigrant organisations have a variety of activities and sub-organisations that promote both transnational and local collective action. The thesis documents types of immigrant organisations, their characteristics, location, membership, objectives, activities and their efforts in assisting their members in cases of xenophobic attacks. In Cape Town, immigrants have formed organizations that help them to network with one another in order to negotiate space in this hostile environment.

After going through the literature on entrepreneurship we found that very little studies have been done whether culture and family business traditions influence the decisions of entrepreneurship. Most people from the South and Southeast Asia had cultural and family business backgrounds. The purpose of our study is to investigate if culture and family business traditions of South andSoutheast Asian immigrants affect their decision to become self-employed and if so how. This will enhance the understanding of whether this factor is also important to motivate the entrepreneurs to be self-employed. Most of the studies have pointed out the motivational factors such as pull factors and push factors as being the main influencing factors for immigrant entrepreneurs to choose self-employment. Although, there are various literatures on entrepreneurship and its motivating factors, cultural and family based business traditions, limited study has focused on showing how the cultural and family business background affect the decision making abilities of the entrepreneurs. We have focused on the immigrant entrepreneurs born in South and Southeast Asian region operating their businesses in Umea city. For conducting this study we have used semi-structured interviews from our six respondents to collect the data. Based on our findings we found that the entrepreneurs are influenced by culture and family business traditions. Their social identity plays an important role in motivating them to become entrepreneurs. These immigrants are exposed to business environment from a very early age which helps shape up their business minds. The experience gained from their parents and the cultural and family business traditions act as business opportunity for them in the host country. We believe that this study would be helpful in the future for other scholars who are willing to conduct further research on this particular topic of interest. Our findings have increased the understanding of how the cultural and family business traditions of South and Southeast Asian region do affect the entrepreneurs’ decision to become self-employed in Umea.

With the number of Asian immigrants continually increasing in New Zealand society, Asian immigrant businesses have been appearing more rapidly in New Zealand, particularly in Auckland. The primary purpose of this study is to enquire into why a certain Asian immigrant group become business people after migrating to Auckland, New Zealand. In addition, it investigates the level of their business activity and the level of happiness with their new life in New Zealand. This study examines the growing phenomenon of Asian immigrants, and the entrepreneurship rate of ethnic groups through existing statistics. The study focuses on Korean immigrants. Twenty self-employed Koreans who are running a business in Auckland participated in the study. They were invited to talk about why they became self-employed business people and related matters about their business activity. The study found that Korean immigrants chose self-employment as a means of getting a job. They gave up seeking mainstream employment opportunities due to the language barrier and their inability to cope with a new society and new system. Other fundamental factors in their decision to become entrepreneurs were that firstly, they were willing to invest a considerable amount of their own money and secondly, they preferred to participate in the workforce rather than to depend on the New Zealand welfare system. Based on the information acquired through the research, the study reported that the recently increased numbers of Asian businesses are partly attributable to New Zealand business immigration policy which introduced a new business category – Long Term Business Visa (LTBV). The findings from this research pointed to commitment that immigrant businesses contribute to the New Zealand economy and New Zealand society as taxpayers and potential employers.

This thesis aims to explore the shift of national identity of marriage immigrant women in Taiwan. With regards to the citizenship legislation being used as the state's integration scheme, it aims to answer the following questions: how is the citizenship legislation shaped to integrate immigrant women? How do immigrant women react to the legislation? How does this interaction affect their national identity? Taking a temporal perspective and viewing their transition to mothers and citizens as their rite of passage, this thesis argues that immigrant women from China, the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia develop an in-between identity towards Taiwan and their country of origin. The in-betweenness is brought about by their perception of the citizenship legislation, their adoption of the Chinese language, and their fulfilment of motherhood duties. Along the rite of passage, immigrant women experience the in-betweenness whilst simultaneously playing the roles of daughter, mother and citizen. In these roles, they experience the infusion and tension of the two senses of belonging. On the other hand, their self-identification with Taiwan is contested by the host society and the contestation reinforces the in-betweenness. The contestation results from the categorisations of Chinese, Southeast Asian and Overseas Chinese from Indonesia by the host society. Incorporated into the citizenship legislation, these categorisations are integral to the nation-building project. They are instrumental to consolidate the proclaimed statehood of Taiwan and to safeguard its self-identity as that of a multicultural nation that upholds democracy, prosperity and human rights protection. Being differently affected by the three variables, immigrant women follow different paths to the in-betweenness. Whilst democracy and prosperity are positive inducements for generating identification, the discourses of multiculturalism and human rights protection are insufficient for integrating the immigrant outsiders. This inadequacy may be a driving force for the political participation of immigrant-turned citizens. These findings enrich the understanding of the relationship between women and the state, and facilitate an 'outside-in' perspective with which to examine the conduct and impact of the Taiwan's nation-building.

The purpose of this research was to explore the motives, values and expectations of Israeli Russian immigrant students and their parents who emigrated from Russia in the 1990s. Instruments administered to the students included the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)--a projective measure for assessing motives (Murray, 1938). The Thematic Apperception Test required the students to create imaginative stories in response to a series of four pictures. In addition, the students were asked to answer a Student questionnaire. The instrument administered to the parents included a Parent questionnaire. The questionnaires were used to evaluate values, expectations and opinions. The study took place in an afternoon school called the "Impulse School". All the teachers and students attending this school are Russian, and the lessons are all in Russian. Ninety-nine students participated in this study. The majority of students were ages 10-11. This group included both genders. One hundred and four parents took part in this study. Fifty-nine parents have a child who participated in the study. Every one of the parents has children attending the "Impulse School". The data from the Parent and Student questionnaires shows a lack of relationship between parent-student pairs. The adults and students have different perceptions of the academic expectations and evaluations of the students' functioning. The students perceive their parents to have higher expectations and they evaluate their schoolwork higher than their parents. The only similarity between parents and students was in both groups' definitions of success. The majority of students and parents defined success in achievement terms. This study reveals the parents' perception of the Israeli educational system as being academically weaker than the Russian one. The results agree with McClelland's (1987) assertion that correlation between the two types of measures---the projective and unconscious TAT, and the direct and conscious questionnaires, is quite low. The majority of TAT stories expose negative feelings associated with achievement motivation. By contrast, the questionnaires show that the students value good grades and express academic self-confidence. Many of the stories did not focus on achievement motivation but on the affiliation motive, despite the fact that three out of four pictures were supposed to arouse achievement themes.

The broad objective of this thesis is to study the patterns of objective and subjective well-being among the immigrants in Europe. The main part of the thesis consists of three single-authored empirical chapters. The first chapter analyzes the longitudinal patterns of relative poverty among the foreign-born in Sweden. The second chapter examines the mechanisms of occupational attainment, occupational mobility and long-term occupational cost of migration among Senegalese immigrants in France, Spain and Italy. The third chapter analyzes life satisfaction and income satisfaction among immigrants in Germany. At the most general level, the results in the empirical chapters suggest that the objective well-being improves with duration of stay at destination, even if very gradually for some immigrant groups, while, on the other hand, there is a ceteris paribus negative relationship between the subjective well-being and duration of stay. A number of other findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the processes associated with the well-being among immigrants.

This study aims to examine how Hong Kong immigrants make career decisions after they have arrived in Canada. Through using a case study approach, this study collected data by conducting indepth interviews with two clients, one male and one female. All the interviews were audio-taped and the important portions transcribed. Three decision-making models (the rational decision-making model [Horan, 1979], the conflict decision-making model [Janis & Mann, 1977], and the deciding-in-context model [Sloan, 1987]) were employed to analyze the clients' career choices. This study found that the first two models were not satisfactory in explaining the decision-making behavior of the two clients. Sloan's model seems to be the most useful because it emphasizes the contexts within which choices were shaped and made. Four contexts - life history, immediate social environment, culture and character - were particularly salient in shaping their decisions.

This dissertation contributes to a strand of literature on the economic integration of immigrants in Canada's labour market. My first essay examines the economic return to human capital acquired abroad using an improved identification strategy of foreign education and work experience. My second essay examines whether education-job mismatches, on the part of immigrants, possibly explain their poor labour market outcomes. My final essay provides new evidence on the economic assimilation of U.K. immigrants in Canada over the late 19th and early-20th-century.In my first essay I exploit the enhanced details on education attainment provided in the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) to decompose aggregate human capital variables into more precise measures of foreign and Canadian locations than those employed in related Census-based studies. I find that measurement error associated with using imprecise measures exaggerates the portability (in terms of economic returns) of foreign schooling and the degree of immigrant wage assimilation. However, the virtually zero returns to foreign work experience, commonly found in the literature, cannot be attributed to measurement error. Thus, this dimension of human capital receives virtually no recognition for immigrants and it is mainly responsible for the substantial estimated wage gaps in the standard human-capital-adjusted earnings function. The contribution of my second essay is an investigation of the importance of education-job mismatches in explaining the poor labour market outcomes observed for immigrants to Canada. Immigrants have a modestly lower incidence of working in jobs related to their education than do the Canadian-born, and there is a sizable wage penalty for working in unrelated jobs. The lower incidence of matching, found among immigrant workers, can explain a sizable portion of their lower returns to foreign education credentials, and also the immigrant-native wage gap among university educated workers. By contrast, foreign education and work experience acquired abroad is not discounted in the Canadian labour market for immigrants who are successfully matched. My final essay examines the economic assimilation of pre-war U.K. immigrants using recently digitized samples of the 1901 and 1911 censuses. These nationally representative samples allow for a more comprehensive examination of immigrant assimilation than existing published evidence which is limited to cross-sectional samples of Montréal and Toronto. Estimates of within-cohort earnings growth show that these newcomers, despite their cultural similarities with the Canadian-born, experienced sizable earnings disadvantages upon arrival coupled with slow subsequent earnings growth. However, most immigrant cohorts achieved earnings parity with comparable Canadian-born workers over their working life unlike that found for Montréal and Toronto. Thus, although the government's desire was to attract the most industrious and hard working immigrants, arrivals from the British Isles may have been negatively selected in terms of unobservable labour market characteristics.

The evolution of the Moroccan migration phenomenon in Spain and Catalonia has included, among other things, the continuous growth of the collective and the growth of its entities and associations in different spheres: sociocultural, religious, sport, etc. created by immigrants of Moroccan origin who in theory constitute bridges between their groups and other entities, institutions and the host society. This increase is based, on the one hand, on the interest of the Moroccan immigrants themselves and, on the other hand, on the willingness of their representatives to play the role of energizers, interlocutors and facilitators of contact between administrations and the Moroccan collective. The opinions, comments and points of view adopted by different administrations, political representatives, civil society and local entities, at both statal and regional levels, are also essential in evaluating the roles played by the Moroccans’ associations in Catalonia. In addition to this, it is an exhibition and a multidimensional view of Moroccans’ associationism in the catalan context, the factors that directly affect in its creation, its development and its consolidation. It is a question of understanding the current situation of the Moroccans’ associationism and the possibilities of existence, mobility, representativeness it has, the characteristics and the areas of its work and the processes of strengthening and weakness. It is also an up-to-date view of the Moroccans’ associations in the catalan context and the links that exist between these associations and the public administration, the autochthonous associative movement, the immigrant associative movement, the NGOs that work on immigration and the civil society in general. In short, it is an updated presentation of the Moroccans’ associative movement and its interaction and impact on the host society at a social and cultural level and the impact that public policies of citizen participation are having on the development of this associative movement in Catalonia. It is also an analysis, in depth, of the socio-educational action of these associations, the functioning and organization, the trajectory, the speeches and the role of the leaders of these associations and, also, it is an examination of this Moroccan associationism from an approach of the types and areas of work and the evaluation of the main results under analysis.

This thesis paper researches the impact of illegal immigration on U.S. social services. The study focuses on information gathered from a group of illegal Mexican immigrants who have lived and worked in the U.S. The sample of illegal Mexican immigrants was attracted to the U.S. primarily for economic reasons. The U.S. economic system has directly and indirectly attracted Mexican workers into America for over a 100 years. The U.S. economy has directly attracted Mexican workers through recruitment practices employed by several U.S. business sectors. Indirectly, the powerful U.S. economy has historically attracted Mexicans north because the U.S.'s economy offers more economic opportunities than the Mexican economy. Illegal Mexican immigrants' presence in the U.S. economy has led to the increased use of U.S. social services and as a result of this extra use, a burden has been put on several social service institutions. To what extent this burden affects the U.S. economy is still not clear because illegal immigrants pay U.S. taxes that may compensate the system for this extra use.

China is one of the top three sources of immigrants to Canada (Statistics Canada, 2016a). As a result, many scholars now recognize the importance of studying Chinese immigrants (Guo, 2013; Mah, 1995; Chow, 2004; Fong & Ooka, 2006; Tang, 2001; Mao, 2015). However, so far, most studies have focused only on this group’s economic attainment, their educational performance, and their sociocultural dynamics. As yet, there has been little discussion of their fertility. Indeed, in my opinion, far too little attention has been paid to the upbringing of these immigrants in the context of China’s unique efforts at population control, culminating in the official One-Child Policy of 1979. Therefore, this study aims to answer the following three research questions about Chinese immigrants living in Canadian society: • Do the Chinese immigrants conceive their fertility with reference to the One-child policy? • What factors do they attribute to this policy, either as benefits or as drawbacks, in terms of their fertility? • Do their discourses reveal any evidence of internalization of the One-child policy, despite their exposure to competing fertility norms in Canada? Or on the contrary, has the immigration process disrupted their subscription to the one-child norm? My study draws on fifteen semi-structured interviews with Chinese immigrant women. This paper presents its main results as the following: 1) the one-child policy has indeed influenced Chinese people’s view of fertility, which since 1982 has changed from a pronatalist philosophy to one favouring fewer births; 2) Chinese immigrants to Canada have in fact internalized the one-child norm; 3) The experience of immigration has not disrupted the one-child habitus. Rather, the immigrants’ exposure to the Canadian environment—in terms both of workplace and community—has contributed to its reinforcement. Of course, it may not be possible to generalize from the results of my local research (conducted in Ottawa, Ontario) to all immigrant women across the country. Nevertheless, I am confident that this study will prove to be a valuable contribution to discussions on the issue of Chinese fertility in Canada.

This project focused on immigrants' perceptions of social services and social workers. The study employed the post positivist paradigm. The project was conducted with legal and illegal immigrants who received services at Bilingual Family Counseling Service in the city of Ontario, CA. The study found that the immigrants' perceptions about social service agencies and social workers were multi-determined by at least three elements: knowledge, experiences, and attitudes. The dynamic interaction between experiences and attitudes shaped the immigrants' perceptions. Most of the respondents had a positive attitude toward social workers and social services agencies.

All households need wealth for economically secure and create opportunities for the next generations. A focus on the wealth position of immigrant households illuminates how immigrants are economically integrated into the host society and provides a unique perspective on their financial well-being. Based on the 2006-2016 Italian Survey of Household Income and Wealth (SHIW), we study the differences in wealth accumulation between immigrants and natives. The quantile regression analyses indicate that immigrants hold significantly less net wealth than their native counterparts throughout the wealth distribution. The wealth gap persists even after controlling for demographic characteristics and other influencing factors including income, level of education, risk profile, etc. When compared to natives, immigrants are less likely to participate in the formal financial markets and their portfolio choices also differ from those of the native-born. The likelihood of holding risky assets, government securities, homeownership, and businesses are reduced by immigrant status. Homes are the largest investment that all households make and by far the principal component of the household’s wealth composition. Mortgage loan is the key to become a homeowner. We investigate the pricing difference of mortgages between immigrants and natives in Italy using a unique and large dataset on the granted loan contract. We find that immigrants pay substantially higher than natives for mortgages. The interest rates differential persists high and significant even after controlling for different risk factors, mortgage characteristics and personal characteristics of borrowers. The Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition reveals that 80 percent of the observed differential interest rate does not depend on the observable characteristics. The empirical evidence provided here indicates that these differentials are likely caused by discrimination. Our findings suggest that there is lack of notable advances toward economic integration of immigrants in Italy and additional policies which might help to ease the process of integration and contribute to reducing the wealth inequality through promoting of financial products especially for immigrants, easy access to the credit markets, and the removal of obstacles to the access to the credit markets.
