Transfer of knowledge is a complex process. While codified knowledge is easy to transfer, tacit knowledge is not. "Tacit knowledge is difficult to exchange over long distance because it is heavily imbued with meaning arising from the social and institutional context in which it is produced, and this context specific nature makes it spatially sticky" (Gertler 2003). This thesis argues that there is certain tacit knowledge that migrants often transmit over long distances after customizing the knowledge to apply in different institutional settings. This thesis takes the example of Bangladesh, a country having an unfavorable socio- economic and institutional setting for receiving new technology, and explains how, despite the unfavorable conditions, some expatriates do transfer their knowledge to Bangladesh. Based on in-depth interviews with those expatriates creating the most impact in the economy of Bangladesh, the thesis shows that highly skilled Bangladeshi immigrants in the United States transfer tacit knowledge through building partnerships with individuals and organizations in Bangladesh. The thesis also finds that these partnerships are mostly based on trust, often coming from basic commonalities: same language, common "codes" of communication, shared norms, and personal knowledge about each other.

Повний текст джерелаObservations from the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program comprised the physical data set. In parallel with this data collection activity, meteorological products from a numerical model were catalogued over the same time interval. The thesis presents comparisons of the satellite products and the model output over the study period. In part, motivated by the outcomes of this comparison, it was determined to investigate further prospects for using the array of satellite-derived products that might be more appropriate for use as a forecasting support tool. Finally, as an example, a prototype index is proposed which has potential to demonstrate the degree of development of a system. In this work, for want of a name, this index is termed the Hamilton Index (HI). It uses meteorological products derived from the microwave DMSP series of satellites and provides a temporal sequence of values of the index that are applied to monitor the developing of the TC systems in the three case studies. The meteorological variables used in the index were selected because they were accepted indicators of tropical cyclogenesis identified in the research literature. When applied to the three case studies, the HI showed a significant improvement in sensitivity to the state of development of the systems, especially when compared to the computer model data examined for the case studies.

Повний текст джерелаIn the preparation of this thesis, an appreciation of the obstacles faced by Chinese immigrant women was gained by reviewing the relevant literature and government documents. The concerns of Chinese-Canadian women were placed in context by reviewing the history of women's status in China and their gradual influx into Canada. Participant observation of groups and case studies of individual women revealed that immigrant Chinese women are a heterogeneous group in terms of their backgrounds but homogeneous in terms of their tenacity and their aspirations and hopes for the future. The present study is the first attempt at recognizing Chinese immigrant women in Montreal. The conclusion was reached that through education, hard work and persistence in learning the official languages of Canada, they can triumph in face of societal barriers.

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis investigates performing arts administration and management in the current economic and social environment in Vietnam and Australia within a context of globalisation. A comparative study of two major arts organisations in both Vietnam and Australia was carried out to investigate the following: why and how performing arts organisations are adapting to the changing environment; how arts leaders are adapting to changes; and whether arts managers need specific arts management training. The suitability of pertinent training packages and tertiary arts management courses from an Australian perspective are examined to determine whether these could be adapted for arts administration training in Vietnam. A qualitative case study approach was employed, using judgemental sampling. Two case studies were in Vietnam (the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Hanoi Youth Theatre), and two in Australia (the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Theatre Company). Some arts administrators involved with managing these performing arts organisations were interviewed in-depth, and relevant documents, regulations and policies in the arts field were also analysed to lay a foundation for comprehending the operation and management of performing arts organisations in both countries, at a time of change. Findings indicate that globalisation and particularly economic changes are major pressures that are pushing arts organisations to adapt. Furthermore, in the context of the knowledge economy, credentials have become increasingly important for arts leaders to obtain their positions, while in order to be successful in their positions, practical experience, innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset proved to be even more essential. It is suggested that some pertinent arts management training courses in Australia could, if adapted, contribute to enhancing arts management and the entertainment industry in Vietnam, as well as providing mutual benefit to both Vietnam and Australia.

Foreign spouses immigrated to Taiwan via marital bond from places such as Mainland China, Vietnam, and Indonesia are referred as “New Immigrants.” After coming to this new country, their need in adaptation to the environment, which entails overcoming barriers of language, differences in value system, and cultural divergence, befalls on the path towards becoming the new residents in Taiwanese society. Inspired by such background knowledge, the present study intends to obtain a better understanding of the adjustment processes and the possibilities of self-fulfillment of female immigrants through marriage by way of the researcher’s observation of and interview with nine female new immigrants living in Puli and Toufen Township, whose origins are from Indonesia, Vietnam, and Mainland China and who have been staying in Taiwan for ten to twenty-six years. After compiling and analyzing research data, the researcher then designates three major phases of the life of the female immigrants in question, each containing different challenges and characteristics: I、 The Initial Phase(The Storm): The first year in Taiwan tells a story of disagreement and quarrels between husband and wife caused by the discrepancy in their growing background, mother tongue, and value system they are acculturated in. II、 The Middle Phase(Melting of Ice):Between the second and the fourth year in Taiwan, the female immigrants start to acquaint themselves with Taiwanese customs and culture. During this period, children are delivered, and a mutual goal among the married couple is built, thus unsettled feelings are gradually substituted for peace of mind when facing this new environment for the wives. III、 The Mature Phase(Stable Status):From the fifth year on, being familiar with their surroundings along with the prospect of attaining citizenship and being protected equally by labor laws and system and having their own social circle, the female subjects now seek acknowledged identification in their new homeland. Female immigrants through marriage have to endure and overcome difficulties in their special marriage, adjustment in the new big family, obstacles in language acquisition, diet change and racism in order to earn their spouses’ respect and trust, the new family’s support, and the approval of local Taiwanese communities. Most of them take part in low skill demanding jobs and devote themselves to their children and family—two domains where their need for self-achievement is satisfied.

This exploratory study examined the effects of western immigrant’s cultural shock on cross-cultural adjustment in Taiwan, through the investigation of the Hofstede’s five cultural dimensions. The research was conducted on the base of semi-structured interview among immigrants who came from western countries. Through a qualitative analysis, higher influence resulted in three dimensions: Individualism versus Collectivism, Power Distance and Long-term orientation versus Short-term orientation, and emerged as significant predictors of Western immigrants cultural shock on cross-cultural adjustment. The study further revealed major difficulties in those three dimensions: management issues among western immigrant and the organization, communication misunderstands between western immigrant and Taiwanese colleagues and negative effect of culture shock. The study limitations and implications for the future research is suggested.
Hansen, GS. "History curatorship in Australia : case studies from the National Museum of Australia 1991-2008." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10453/33281.
Повний текст джерелаThe main argument of this thesis is that history curatorship in Australia does not, as yet, possess a mature critical culture. While there is a growing literature in the academy about museums, there is surprisingly little material written by practising history curators. History curatorship, as such, lacks a tradition of critical writing about its professional practice. All too often curators move from one project to the next with little time to reflect on the way they work. While some curators have written about their work the impression emerges that history curators are still struggling to define what it is they do and how they do it. In this thesis I explore the relationship between theory and practice, or praxis, in relation to history curatorship. In most exhibitions curators seek to apply a theoretical framework to the subject matter they are working on. In some instances this is a self conscious process and in others it is implicit in their work. I will explore a series of case studies from projects I have completed at the NMA to explore this relationship in my own work. As such the thesis is designed to be an interrogation of my own professional practice. Reflecting on the work I have completed provides some valuable insights into the practice of history curatorship.
Waxman, Peter. "The initial post-arrival adjustment process of recently arrived humanitarian entrants : a case study of entrants from Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan in Sydney, Australia." 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/551.
Повний текст джерелаThe purpose of this research is to examine the initial post-arrival process of recently arrived humanitarian entrants into Sydney, Australia from three non-traditional source countries, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Resettlement was examined from social, economic and health perspectives, with the determinants influencing the settlement process being identified as a precursor to understanding the long-term adjustment process. A literature review on settlement adjustment from a multidisciplinary approach confirmed the dearth of research on early refugee settlement experience in Australia and overseas for groups other than the Indochinese. Such research has tended to concentrate on one of the specific aspects of settlement rather than attempting a holistic approach to understanding adjustment patterns. Subsequently, 44 key informants, representing over 25 different organisations providing services (both government and non-government) to humanitarian entrants, were individually surveyed to gather information on their clients' needs, perceptions and problems. Issues emerging from both the literature review and key informants' survey formed the basis of a survey of 172 recently arrived Bosnian, Iraqi and Afghan humanitarian entrants. Among the statistical tools used to analyse the entrants' surveys were Pearson's correlation coefficient, analysis of variance, Kendall's tau correlation, Spearman's rho correlation and Cronbach's alpha. Results indicated that during the initial settlement stage, the former socio-economic background of the entrants has little impact on their economic, social or health adjustment. Instead, the conditions of departure, such as the loss of property, long-term incarceration, torture and trauma, were found to have a far reaching influence on the entrants' social and health experiences in their new country; however, despite the variety of traumatic pre-departure experiences, the resilience of the entrants reinforced their determination to participate in the workforce. Although commonalities were found among the three groups in settlement outcomes, there were also distinct differences. The groups shared difficulties such as post-arrival unemployment, lack of suitable accommodation and family reunion concerns. However, the Bosnians, for example, experienced the greatest degree of health-related problems, the Iraqis expressed the greatest interest in sponsoring family members and the Afghans were the most well-adjusted of the three groups. Detailed policy implications are also presented; these emphasise that humanitarian entrants may experience adjustment difficulties qualitatively different from those of traditional migrants and argue for improved support services.

This study aims at exploring the development of gender consciousness for female new immigrants with learning experiences of higher education. The contents include the development of new immigrants in Taiwan, the present learning situation of new immigrants in Taiwan, the development of gender consciousness, female new immigrants’ gender consciousness, and the elements causing impact upon female new immigrants’ gender consciousness. Through exploring the gender consciousness development of two female new immigrants with learning experiences of higher education, this study hopes to discuss the elements causing impact upon the development of female new immigrants’ gender consciousness. This study adopts qualitative research, taking interview (formal and informal) as the main method accompanied with documentation exploration. These methods serve as the collection of data. Through the study of qualitative analysis, we hope to perform a comprehensive exploration for the studied issues. The findings of this study are as follows: 1.When female new immigrants were still in their mother country, the development of their gender consciousness was influenced by their patriarchal culture. They played the role which accepting their traditional character passively. The concept of gender equity was not enlightened yet. 2.When female new immigrants were getting used to the transnational marriage, their gender consciousness kept agitating and interacting with the patriarchal culture of their husband’s family. Although their gender role maintained the past role perception in their mother country, “the approaching of gender equity discourse” inspired interviewees’ understanding for gender equity, their ability of introspecting gender issues, and their motive of changing the present situation. 3.The learning motives of female new immigrants to accept higher education include: serving as the paragon of children, getting a diploma, and personal achievements. 4.Female new immigrants with learning experiences of higher education are more self-confident. The enhancement of abilities and improvement of confidence serve as the firm foundation for the development of their gender consciousness. At last, this study suggests the concept of gender mainstreaming be integrated into the life-adjustment course of new immigrants in Taiwan. The concept of gender equity will be rooted in the mind of new immigrants. Female new immigrants should be encouraged to keep learning through multiple strategies. Besides, we should create a friendly learning environment for female new immigrants.
