Care and socialization are practices included in what have been called maintenance activities, a set of works that entangle very specific and characteristic relations and identities. These activities involve the quotidian maintenance of human groups through care, socialization, provision, food processing, and cooking or the organization and maintenance of the living area. Such practices are vital for the reproduction, cohesion, and wellbeing of communities and involve a significant amount of specialized knowledge, experience, and technology. This chapter examines evidence from the European Bronze Age for care and socialization practices, offering new challenges and questions on issues such as children’s agency and identity and involvement in the processes of daily life.

Since the 1970s, we have seen increasing interest in the integration of Muslims as the most visible ethno-religious minority group in Britain. The term ‘integration’ as used in this chapter is concerned with the social aspect of a process in which Muslims, as well as other minority ethnic people, required and/or would like to participate in society. More elaboration of different theoretical and academic interpretations of this term is discussed later in this chapter. The social aspects of integration mainly revolve around the maintenance of Muslims’ distinctive identity and practice (Modood, 2005, 2007; Parekh, 2008; Vertovec and Wessendorf, 2010). This chapter looks at Scottish Muslims’ integration strategies (based on gender, generational and level of religiosity) and introduces the idea of ‘halal integration’ which entails fitting into society while maintaining their religious identity. This refers to the life of many Scottish Muslims, whom I refer to as ‘halal Scots’ – those who integrated into many aspects of Scottish society while maintaining their religious identity and practice. Some examples of such integration are adopting alternative ways of socialising such as meeting at cafés, running family and social events in non-alcoholic environments, and taking part in voluntary and charitable work.

This chapter discusses how the criminal justice system assumed a prime position in the policing of prostitution. By differentiating between adult and child prostitution laws, the legal system played a significant role in molding public and official perceptions toward the identity of adult and underage practitioners of prostitution and the perceived menace each type of prostitution allegedly posed. Moreover, unlike the social interpretation of sex work, the new legal regime from the early 1940s institutionalized the criminalization of transactional sex as a component of social and public order. As such, prostitution became a component of the colonial state's maintenance of law and order, which was cardinal to the effective exploitation of the colonies.

Throughout its history, Iran has been a richly multilingual nation, with documented evidence reaching back nearly three millennia. Today, estimates of the number of languages spoken in modern Iran vary, with numbers ranging from fifty-four to seventy-six living languages. This chapter presents a general description of societal bilingualism, how bilingual communities come about, the relationship between language and identity in multilingual contexts, and how best to describe the kind(s) of bilingualism found in Iran, including the use of English. The chapter then turns to bilingualism in Iran from a historical perspective, with the goal of understanding why there are so many languages in present-day Iran. Finally, it addresses the status of English in pre- and post-revolutionary Iran and issues of language maintenance.

This chapter collects evidence of temples as venues of the prophetic performance, prophets among the temple personnel and as advocates (sometimes even critics) of temple worship at Mari and in Assyria, in Greek sanctuaries, and in Jerusalem. The chapter discusses prophets and temples (institutions of religious worship)—the function and significance of temples and cult places varied according to their size, location, wealth, and status; their legitimacy and symbolic significance provided an identity for the community they served and the maintenance of their symbolic universe. The most important sanctuaries featuring in the sources are the temple of Dagan at Terqa (Mari) and that of Ištar in Arbela (Assyria); the temples of Apollo at Delphi, Didyma, and Claros, and that of Zeus at Dodona; and the temple of Jerusalem.

This is a book about the intersection between processes of mobility and religious identity and practice in Early Modern Ireland. The period between c.1580 and c.1685 was one of momentous importance in terms of the establishment of different confessional identities in the island, and various typesof mobility played a key role in the development, articulation, and maintenance of separate religious communities. Part I examines the dialectic between migration and religious adherence, paying particular attention to the transnational dimension of clerical formation which played a vital role in shaping the competing Catholic, Church of Ireland, and non-conformist clergies. Part II investigates how more quotidian practices of mobility such as pilgrimage and interparochial communions helped to elaborate religious identities and the central role of figurative images of movement in structuring Christians’ understanding of their lives. The final chapters of the book analyze the extraordinary importance of migratory experience in shaping the lives and writings of the authors of key confessional identity texts. Hitherto underestimated or taken for granted, the book argues that migrants and exiles were of crucial significance in forging the self-understanding of the different religious communities of the island.

Social scientists most often seek to empirically validate something already observed. Genetics identifies the unobserved. It provides a starting point to identify developmental pathways to preferences and behaviors. Understanding differences in the genome can help identify why people who experience the same social environment physically perceive it differently and react to it differently. The introduction of evolutionary theory, combined with methods and approaches from genetics, genomics, epigenetics, and molecular biology, has substantially changed the way in which social scientists explore and understand the development and maintenance of political values and behaviors. This chapter reviews findings from recent empirical and theoretical studies that have explored how genetic factors account for some part of why people differ politically.

Chapter 5 examines the sonic demarcation of religious boundaries within Hmong communities of Sa Pa to illustrate how minorities are being separated by competing transnational communities of ritual practice. A descriptive account of one shaman’s approach to conducting rituals demonstrates how music, chant, and dance form a central part of community maintenance in a localized setting. Over the past three decades the rapid conversion of the Hmong to various forms of Christianity has dramatically impacted these spiritual and associated musical practices. Vietnamese Hmong are encouraged to dispense with their animist traditions entirely in favor of adopting new religious songs composed by European missionaries and musicians in the diaspora. Many families are fractured by these contrasting animist and Christian practices. This chapter argues that Hmong identity is regularly superseded by other social and musical formulations in daily life, yet ethnicity maintains a persistent sociostructural presence in the background.
