In this work we review methods to decrease the optical absorption losses in metamaterials. The practical interest for metamaterials is huge, but the possible applications are severely limited by their high inherent optical absorption in the metal parts. We consider the possibilities to fabricate metamaterial with a decreased metal volume fraction, the application of alternative lower-loss plasmonic materials instead of the customary utilized noble metals, the use of all-dielectric, high refractive index contrast subwavelength nanocomposites. Finally, we dedicate our attention to various methods to optimize the frequency dispersion in metamaterials by changing their geometry and composition in order to reach lower absorption, which includes the use of the hypercrystals. The final goal is to widen the range of different metamaterialbased devices and structures, including those belonging to transformation optics. Maybe the most important among them is the fabrication of a novel generation of alloptical or hybrid optical/electronic integrated circuits that would operate at optical frequencies and at the same time would offer a packaging density and complexity of the contemporary integrated circuits, owing to the strong localization of electromagnetic fields enabled by plasmonics.

Plasmonics represents a unique approach to confine and enhance electromagnetic radiation well below the diffraction limit, bringing a huge potential for novel applications, for instance, in energy harvesting, optoelectronics, and nanoscale biochemistry. To achieve novel functionalities, the combination of plasmonic properties with other material functions has become increasingly attractive. In this Perspective, we review the current state of the art, challenges, and future opportunities within the field of magnetoplasmonics in confined geometries, an emerging area aiming to merge magnetism and plasmonics to either control localized plasmons, confined electromagnetic-induced collective electronic excitations, using magnetic properties, or vice versa. We begin by highlighting the cornerstones of the history and principles of this research field. We then provide our vision of its future development by showcasing raising research directions in hybrid magnetoplasmonic systems to overcome radiation losses and novel materials for magnetoplasmonics, such as transparent conductive oxides and hyperbolic metamaterials. Finally, we provide an overview of recent developments in plasmon-driven magnetization dynamics, nanoscale opto-magnetism, and acousto-magnetoplasmonics. We conclude by giving our personal vision of the future of this thriving research field.

In this work, we have designed highly sensitive plasmonic metasensors based on atomically thin perovskite nanomaterials with a detection limit up to 10−10 refractive index units (RIU) for the target sample solutions. More importantly, we have improved phase singularity detection with the Goos–Hänchen (GH) effect. The GH shift is known to be closely related to optical phase signal changes; it is much more sensitive and sharp than the phase signal in the plasmonic condition, while the experimental measurement setup is much more compact than that of the commonly used interferometer scheme to exact the phase signals. Here, we have demonstrated that plasmonic sensitivity can reach a record-high value of 1.2862 × 109 µm/RIU with the optimum configurations for the plasmonic metasensors. The phase singularity-induced GH shift is more than three orders of magnitude larger than those achievable in other metamaterial schemes, including Ag/TiO2 hyperbolic multilayer metamaterials (HMMs), metal–insulator–metal (MIM) multilayer waveguides with plasmon-induced transparency (PIT), and metasurface devices with a large phase gradient. GH sensitivity has been improved by more than 106 times with the atomically thin perovskite metasurfaces (1.2862 × 109 µm/RIU) than those without (918.9167 µm/RIU). The atomically thin perovskite nanomaterials with high absorption rates enable precise tuning of the depth of the plasmonic resonance dip. As such, one can optimize the structure to reach near zero-reflection at the resonance angle and the associated sharp phase singularity, which leads to a strongly enhanced GH lateral shift at the sensor interface. By integrating the 2D perovskite nanolayer into a metasurface structure, a strong localized electric field enhancement can be realized and GH sensitivity was further improved to 1.5458 × 109 µm/RIU. We believe that this enhanced electric field together with the significantly improved GH shift would enable single molecular or even submolecular detection for hard-to-identify chemical and biological markers, including single nucleotide mismatch in the DNA sequence, toxic heavy metal ions, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα).

The coupling effects of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) from metamaterials induce variation in both the frequency and intensity of plasmonic modes. Here, we report an angular-dependent THz modulator with hybrid metal–graphene metastructures. The metastructures composed of the period gold split-rod arrays on top of a monolayer graphene, which show redshift modulation in the THz region with an increasing incident angle due to the strong out-of-plane magnetic flux introduced by the clockwise circular current at the oblique incidence. By utilizing graphene-based actively tunable conductor with ion-gel electrical gating, the THz transmission can be significantly modified. The modulation depth of the hybrid metal–graphene metastructure modulator can reach ~37.6% at 0.62 THz with a gate voltage of −3 V. The theoretical modeling of transmitted dependency on frequency and incident angle is demonstrated at different Fermi energies, which fits well with the experimental results. This hybrid device can offer a useful method for THz applications (such as angle sensors or angular-resolved spectroscopy), where angle-dependent modulation is needed.

Sub-wavelength artificial photonic structures can be introduced to tailor and modulate the spectrum of materials, thus expanding the optical applications of these materials. On the basis of SiO2/Cu/ITO arrays, a hybrid coupled resonance (HCR) mechanism, including the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode of ITO, local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode and the microstructural gap resonance (GR) mode, was proposed and researched by systematically regulating the array period and layer thickness. The optical absorptions of the arrays were simulated under different conditions by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. ITO films were prepared and characterized to verify the existence of ENZ mode and Mie theory was used to describe the LSPR mode. The cross-sectional electric field distribution was analyzed while SiO2/Cu/ITO multilayers were also fabricated, of which absorption was measured and calculated by Macleod simulation to prove the existence of GR and LSPR mode. Finally, the broad-band tailoring of optical absorption peaks from 673 nm to 1873 nm with the intensities from 1.8 to 0.41 was realized, which expands the applications of ITO-based plasmonic metamaterials in the near infrared (NIR) region.

In recent years, the tunable plasmon modes in the terahertz region of a multilayer graphene structure interacting with a metallic film substrate have attracted significant interest motivated by the graphene´s unique optical and electronic properties and the possibility to enhance light-matter interaction. In this work, the plasmon waves in graphene layered systems on a conducting thin film are investigated, the hybrid graphene-metal metamaterialis surrounded by two semi-infinite materials with different dielectric constants ε1andε2, respectively. The dispersion relations of electronic collective excitations are calculated by the zeros of an effective dielectric constant obtained from a recursive relation for the amplitudes associated with the electric field between graphene layers in the metamaterial. Long-range Coulomb interactions based on the hybrid layered graphene-metal structure lead new set spectra of collective excitations. At long wavelength (q®0) the optical modes (w~q1/2)depend on the two-dimensional carrier density, the metallic thickness, the metallic substrate plasmon frequency, the number of the graphene layers and the dielectric constants in which the hybrid graphene-metal structure is embedded. This latter plays an important role in a wide range of applications such as a surface plasmon resonance biological sensors and terahertz surface plasmons in optically pumped graphene metamaterials.

Mid-infrared perfect absorbers (PAs) based on metamaterials have many applications in material analysis and spectral detection thanks to the associated strong light–matter interaction. Most of the PAs are built as ‘metal nanostructure’-insulator-metals (MIM). In this paper, we propose an ultra-narrow band absorber based on dielectric metasurface with a metal film substrate. The absorptance comes from the plasmonic absorption in the metal film, where the absorption is enhanced (while the band of that is compressed) by the super cavity effect of the dielectric metasurface. Based on our numerical calculation, the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) can reach 67 nm at 8 μm (8‰), which is more than two orders of magnitude smaller than the resonance wavelength and much narrower than the theoretical FWHMs of MIM absorbers. Moreover, we studied their application in infrared thermal imaging, which also has more benefits than MIM absorbers. This kind of hybrid dielectric metasurface provides a new route to achieve ultra-narrow band perfect absorbers in the mid-infrared regime and can be broadly applied in detectors, thermal emitters and bio-spectroscopy.

Negative refraction provides a platform to manipulate mid-infrared and terahertz radiation for molecular sensing and thermal emission applications. However, its implementation based on metamaterials and plasmonic media presents challenges with optical losses, limited spatial confinement, and lack of active tunability in this spectral range. We demonstrate gate-tunable negative refraction at mid-infrared frequencies using hybrid topological polaritons in van der Waals heterostructures. Specifically, we visualize wide-angle negatively refracted polaritons in α-MoO 3 films partially decorated with graphene, undergoing reversible planar nanoscale focusing. Our atomically thick heterostructures weaken scattering losses at the interface while enabling an actively tunable transition of normal to negative refraction through electrical gating. We propose polaritonic negative refraction as a promising platform for infrared applications such as electrically tunable super-resolution imaging, nanoscale thermal manipulation, enhanced molecular sensing, and on-chip optical circuitry.

Inspired by the anisotropic molecular shape and tunable alignment of liquid crystals (LCs), investigations on hybrid nanodevices which combine LCs with plasmonic metasurfaces have received great attention recently. Since LCs possess unique electro-optical properties, developing novel dynamic optical components by incorporating nematic LCs with nanostructures offers a variety of practical applications. Owing to the large birefringence of LCs, the optical properties of metamaterials can be electrically or optically modulated over a wide range. In this review article, we show different elegant designs of metasurface based nanodevices integrated into LCs and explore the tuning factors of transmittance/extinction/scattering spectra. Moreover, we review and classify substantial tunable devices enabled by LC-plasmonic interactions. These dynamically tunable optoelectronic nanodevices and components are of extreme importance, since they can enable a significant range of applications, including ultra-fast switching, modulating, sensing, imaging, and waveguiding. By integrating LCs with two dimensional metasurfaces, one can manipulate electromagnetic waves at the nanoscale with dramatically reduced sizes. Owing to their special electro-optical properties, recent efforts have demonstrated that more accurate manipulation of LC-displays can be engineered by precisely controlling the alignment of LCs inside small channels. In particular, device performance can be significantly improved by optimizing geometries and the surrounding environmental parameters.

Abstract Photonic researchers have increasingly exploiting nanotechnology. Due to the advent of numerous prevalent nanosized manufacturing methods that enable adequate shaped nanostructures to be manufactured and investigated as a method of exploiting nano-structured. Owing of the variety of optical modes, hybrid nanostructures that integrate dielectric resonators with plasmonic nanostructures also offer enormous potentials. In this work, we have explored a hybrid coupled nano-structured antenna with stacked lithium tantalate (LiTaO3)/Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) multilayer operating at infrared ranging from 400 nm-2000 nm. Here, the sensitivity response has been explored of the hybrid nano-structured array made up of the gold metal elliptical disk placed on the top of a quartz substrate and excite the different modes in both materials. It shows large electromagnetic confinement at the separation distance (d) of the dimers due to strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The influence of the structural dimensions is investigated to optimise the sensitivity of stacked elliptical dimers. The designed hybrid coupled nano-structure with the combination of gold (Au) and Lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) /Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) with h 1 = h 2 = 10 nm each 10 layer exhibits bulk sensitivity (S), which is the spectrum shift unit per refractive index (RI) change in the surrounding medium was calculated to be 730 and 660 nm/RIU with major axis, (a) = 100 nm, minor axis, (b) = 10 nm, separation distance (d) = 10 nm, height, (h) = 100 nm (with or without stacked). The outcomes from the proposed hybrid nanostructure have been compared with a single metallic (only gold) elliptical paired nano-structure to show a significant improvement in the sensitivity using hybrid nano-structure. Depending on these findings, we demonstrated a roughly two-fold increase in sensitivity (S) by utilising a hybrid nano linked nano-structure with respect to identical nano structure, which competes with traditional sensors with the same height, (h) based on localised surface plasmon resonances. Fano resonances in nanostructures have attracted widespread research interests in the past few years for their potential applications in sensing, switching and nonlinear optics. In this paper, a mid-infrared Fano resonance in a hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial is studied. The hybrid metamaterial consists of a metallic grid enclosing with graphene nanodisks. The Fano resonance arises from the coupling of graphene and metallic plasmonic resonances and it is sharper than plasmonic resonances in pure graphene nanostructures. The resonance strength can be enhanced by increasing the number of graphene layers. The proposed metamaterial can be employed as a high-performance mid-infrared plasmonic sensor with an unprecedented sensitivity of about 7.93 μm/RIU and figure of merit (FOM) of about 158.7.

We theoretically study the plasmonic coupling between magnetic plasmon resonances (MPRs) and propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a three-dimensional (3D) metamaterial consisting of vertical Au split-ring resonators (VSRRs) array on Au substrate. By placing the VSRRs directly onto the Au substrate to remove the dielectric substrates effect, the interaction between MPRs of VSRRs and the SPP mode on the Au substrate can generate an ultranarrow-band hybrid mode with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 2.2 nm and significantly enhanced magnetic fields, compared to that of VSRRs on dielectric substrates. Owing to the strong coupling, an anti-crossing effect similar to Rabi splitting in atomic physics is also obtained. Our proposed 3D metamaterial on a metal substrate shows high sensitivity (S = 830 nm/RIU) and figure of merit (FOM = 377), which could pave way for the label-free biomedical sensing.

We theoretically investigate multiple Fano resonances in an asymmetric hybrid graphene–metal metamaterial. The multiple Fano resonances emerge from the coupling of the plasmonic narrow bonding and antibonding modes supported by an in-plane graphene nanoribbon dimer with the broad magnetic resonance mode supported by a gold split-ring resonator. It is found that the Fano resonant mode with its corresponding dark mode of the antibonding mode in the in-plane graphene nanoribbon dimer is only achieved by structural symmetry breaking. The multiple Fano resonances can be tailored by tuning the structural parameters and Fermi levels. Active control of the multiple Fano resonances enables the proposed metamaterial to be widely applied in optoelectronic devices such as tunable sensors, switches, and filters.

We presented a numerical investigation of a metamaterial narrowband perfect absorber conducted via a finite element method based on commercially available COMSOL software. The periodic array of silicon meta-atoms (MAs) are placed on 80 nm thick gold layer. The broadband light at normal incidence is blocked by the gold layer and silicon MAs are used to excite the surface plasmon by scattering light through it. Maximum absorption of 95.7 % is obtained at the resonance wavelength of 1137.5 nm due to the perfect impedance matching of the electric and magnetic dipoles. The absorption is insensitive to the wide-angle of incidence ranging from 0 to 80 degrees. We believe that the proposed metamaterial device can be utilized in solar photovoltaic and biochemical sensing applications. Full Text: PDF ReferencesY. Cheng, X.S. Mao, C. Wu, L. Wu, R.Z. Circular polarization detection enables a wide range of applications. With the miniaturization of optoelectronic systems, integrated circular polarization detectors with native sensitivity to the spin state of light have become highly sought after. The key issues with this type of device are its low circular polarization extinction ratios (CPERs) and reduced responsivities. Metallic two-dimensional chiral metamaterials have been integrated with detection materials for filterless circular polarization detection. However, the CPERs of such devices are typically below five, and the light absorption in the detection materials is hardly enhanced and is even sometimes reduced. Here, we propose to sandwich multiple quantum wells between a dielectric two-dimensional chiral metamaterial and a metal grating to obtain both a high CPER and a photoresponse enhancement. The dielectric-metal-hybrid chiral metamirror integrated quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) exhibits a CPER as high as 100 in the long wave infrared range, exceeding all reported CPERs for integrated circular polarization detectors. The absorption efficiency of this device reaches 54%, which is 17 times higher than that of a standard 45° edge facet coupled device. The circular polarization discrimination is attributed to the interference between the principle-polarization radiation and the cross-polarization radiation of the chiral structure during multiple reflections and the structure-material double polarization selection. The enhanced absorption efficiency is due to the excitation of a surface plasmon polariton wave. The dielectric-metal-hybrid chiral mirror structure is compatible with QWIP focal plane arrays.

We theoretically demonstrate an approach to generate the double narrow Fano resonances via diffraction coupling of magnetic plasmon (MP) resonances by embedding 3D metamaterials composed of vertical Au U-shaped split-ring resonators (VSRRs) array into a dielectric substrate. Our strategy offers a homogeneous background allowing strong coupling between the MP resonances of VSRRs and the two surface collective optical modes of a periodic array resulting from Wood anomaly, which leads to two narrow hybridized MP modes from the visible to near-infrared regions. In addition, the interaction effects in the VSRRs with various geometric parameters are also systematically studied. Owing to the narrow hybrid MP mode being highly sensitive to small changes in the surrounding media, the sensitivity and the figure of merit (FoM) of the embedded 3D metamaterials with fabrication feasibility were as high as 590 nm/RIU and 104, respectively, which holds practical applications in label-free biosensing, such as the detection of medical diagnoses and sport doping drugs.

In this paper, we design a multifunctional micro-nano device with a hybrid metamaterial-waveguide system, which leads to a triple plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). The formation mechanisms of the three transparent peaks have their own unique characteristics. First, PIT-I can be switched into the BIC (Friedrich–Wintge bound state in continuum), and the quality factors (Q-factors) of the transparency window of PIT-I are increased during the process. Second, PIT-II comes from near-field coupling between two bright modes. Third, PIT-III is generated by the near-field coupling between a low-Q broadband bright mode and a high-Q narrowband guide mode, which also has a high-Q transparent window due to the guide mode. The triple-PIT described above can be dynamically tuned by the gate voltage of the graphene, particularly for the dynamic tuning of the Q values of PIT-I and PIT-III. Based on the high Q value of the transparent window, our proposed structure can be used for highly sensitive refractive index sensors or devices with prominent slow light effects.

In this paper, miniaturized design of a plasmonic Bragg grating filter is investigated via the finite element method (FEM). The filter is based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguide deposited on a quartz substrate. The corrugated Bragg grating designed for near-infrared wavelength range is structured on both sides of the waveguide. The spectral characteristics of the filter are studied by varying the geometric parameters of the filter design. As a result, the maximum ER and bandwidth of 36.2 dB and 173 nm is obtained at λBragg=976 nm with a filter footprint of as small as 1.0 x 8.75 µm2, respectively. The ER and bandwidth can be further improved by increasing the number of grating periods and the strength of the grating, respectively. Moreover, the Bragg grating structure is quite receptive to the refractive index of the medium. These features allow the employment of materials such as polymers in the metal-insulator-metal waveguide which can be externally tuned or it can be used for refractive index sensing applications. The sensitivity of the proposed Bragg grating structure can offer a sensitivity of 950 nm/RIU. We believe that the study presented in this paper provides a guideline for the realization of small footprint plasmonic Bragg grating structures which can be employed in filter and refractive index sensing applications. This paper proposes a perfect metamaterial absorber based on a dielectric−dielectric−metal structure, which realizes ultra-narrowband dual-band absorption in the near-infrared band. The maximum Q factor is 484. The physical mechanism that causes resonance is hybrid coupling between magnetic polaritons resonance and plasmon resonance. At the same time, the research results show that the intensity of magnetic polaritons resonance is much greater than the intensity of the plasmon resonance. By changing the structural parameters and the incident angle of the light source, it is proven that the absorber is tunable, and the working angle tolerance is 15°. In addition, the sensitivity and figure of merit when used as a refractive index sensor are also analyzed. This design provides a new idea for the design of high-Q optical devices, which can be applied to photon detection, spectral sensing, and other high-Q multispectral fields.

In this paper, we look at the work of a classical plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) based on metasurface, including a periodic lattice with a cut wire (CW) and a pair of symmetry split ring resonators (SSR). Destructive interference of the ‘bright-dark’ mode originated from the CW and a pair of SSRs and resulted in a pronounced transparency peak at 1.148 THz, with 85% spectral contrast ratio. In the simulation, the effects of the relative distance between the CW and the SSR pair resonator, as well as the vertical distance of the split gap, on the coupling strength of the PIT effect, have been investigated. Furthermore, we introduce a continuous graphene strip monolayer into the metamaterial and by manipulating the Fermi level of the graphene we see a complete modulation of the amplitude and line shape of the PIT transparency peak. The near-field couplings in the relative mode resonators are quantitatively understood by coupled harmonic oscillator model, which indicates that the modulation of the PIT effect result from the variation of the damping rate in the dark mode. The transmitted electric field distributions with polarization vector clearly confirmed this conclusion. Finally, a group delay t g of 5.4 ps within the transparency window is achieved. We believe that this design has practical applications in terahertz (THz) functional devices and slow light devices.

In this work, we demonstrate, theoretically and experimentally, a hybrid dielectric-plasmonic multifunctional structure able to provide full control of the emission properties of CsPbI3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). The device consists of a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) composed of alternating thin metal (Ag) and dielectric (LiF) layers, covered by TiO2 spherical MIE nanoresonators (i.e., the nanoantenna). An optimum HMM leads to a certain Purcell effect, i.e., an increase in the exciton radiative rate, but the emission intensity is reduced due to the presence of metal in the HMM. The incorporation of TiO2 nanoresonators deposited on the top of the HMM is able to counteract such an undesirable intensity reduction by the coupling between the exciton and the MIE modes of the dielectric nanoantenna. More importantly, MIE nanoresonators result in a preferential light emission towards the normal direction to the HMM plane, increasing the collected signal by more than one order of magnitude together with a further increase in the Purcell factor. These results will be useful in quantum information applications involving single emitters based on PNCs together with a high exciton emission rate and intensity.
