This PhD deals with the frontier of the enemies, a territory disputed by the French king, the English king and the duke of Burgondy. We can define it as the whole of the parishes taxed by both sides, meaning most of the parishes located less than 30 miles from an enemy’s fortress. In these dangerous areas, people were compelled to face incertitude, and invented new solutions to deal with it. This thesis also focuses on the frontier as a line, an imaginary boundary between obedient and inobedient people to a same king, as well as a real boundary between the parishes subdued to the French or the English king’s authority. Eventually, the frontier of the enemies was a juridical concept which both kings and urban communities used in their correspondence. This concept was part of the identity of the people living in a territory at war, as Jean Juvénal des Ursins, bishop of Beauvais. By writing the history of this frontier during the second part of the Hundred Years War, we reveal how the French conceived their territory and their relations with the princes then at war

Poitou during the Hundred Years’ War in the 14th century is alternately dominated by different political dynasties. From 1360 à 1372, Poitou is under English control and is part of the Principality of Aquitaine. An administration is put in place to administer these newly acquired regions. After a difficult reconquest of these regions by Du Guesclin in 1375, Poitou and the western lands are under the French control and are part of the “apanage” of the Duke of Berry. Despite not governing these lands from 1320-1356 and 1375-1415 the English keep these lands under constant military pressure via a series of raids, pillaging and naval landings. English domination while only periodic had very specific effects on these new lands. We can as such uniquely view these regions thanks to their domination both militarily and politically by the English during the Hundred Years’ War. We can also see periods of “recovery” after each tense period or military action, either by the French or the English, and as such study this unique political situation in its globality. Finally, we can also study the integration of this land in a bigger ensemble within the Principality of Aquitaine

Abstract: At the first half of fifteenth-century, military expeditions led to the effective occupation of French domains claimed by English monarchs. Despite the successful results achieved in the campaigns started in 1413, it was generally asserted that, until the beginning of 1450’s, the governance of those territories was characterized by instabilities originated from the inadequate behavior of warriors on both sides of the struggle. Such state of overall jeopardy was noticed by William Worcester (1415-1480/5?) in his treatise Boke of Noblesse, where he denounced a state of disorderly warfare, on the one hand, poorly associated with virtues and, on the other, strongly related to vices, stretched away from Christian recommended models. When compared to his contemporaries ideas, William Worcester’s offer evidences regarding crucial steps in conflict organization and performance, enabling, in like manner, a proper questioning of both French and English martial enterprises characteristics. Aware of such perspective, this inquest targets what was understood as condemnable in war making, and, therefore, it interrogates English writings about the desired paths to be tread on effective conflict development and conquest plans. Shortly, this research aims to question a particular fraction of military history: the reasonings and evaluations concerning warriors’ behaviour, scrutinizing their role as a mirror that enables a deeper interpretation of people’s conducts beyond war itself.

During the 15th century, the French nation emerged and the unification of the country progressively took place, under the rule of the royal state. The question of how to control the territory, in both its intellectual and practical dimensions, was made more urgent by the troubles caused by the Hundred Years’ War. How, in the 15th century, could a King of France visualize his kingdom ? How was he able to govern it ? The territorialisation of power, oscillating between representation and real occupation, became progressively clearer. Differentiated social spaces emerged, depending on whether the regions were directly governed by the King or were entrusted to governors, be it a Prince or a Parliament. At the time when the monarchy gained overall control over the territory within the limits defined by four rivers (Scheldt, Meuse, Saone, Rhone), political society organised itself in a state constituted by offices ruled by royal law. Royal unity and diverging regional structures combined themselves into an original type of nation-state, a mixed territorial state, unitary and heterogeneous at the same time

The purpose of this thesis is to present an original poem of the fouteenth century, preserved in the library of the Château de Chantilly in classification mark 1477.We therefore propose an annotated edition of the text and supplemented by various glossaries and indexes that situate him in the literary history of the Middle Ages.In a second phase, we sought to provide answers about the history of the manuscript, the author, the didicatee in which it was intended. We also attempted to restore the cultural, historical and religious context of the Royal Book and the intentions of its author. The dedication says it was intented to Philippe VI, the first king of the dynasty of Valois and his family ; this dedication makes it possible to date the book from 1345 to 1347. The manuscript is a royal destination and its artistic quality ; it can be likened to a mirror for princes or princesses rather because it seems aimed primarily at a female audience for which it is written in French. Il reflects the vicissitudes of time since it was composed in the first phase of the Hundred Years War that pitted the king Edward III English sovereign. In politics, the Royal Book appears as the work of a publicist in power. Il also reflects the moral and religious concerns of its author, anxious to help train the elite and as such, it is also an example of religious outreach. The Royal Book that draws from many diverse sources presents itself both as a witness to circulation of texts and their reception in the middle of the scholars that the witness of a culture, that of a clerk of the fourteenth century

The defence process in the late Middle Ages raises the question of evolution of communities inhabitanting in Toulouse area. Understanding the defensive dynamics requires a multidisciplinary approach based on the analysis of written, planimetric, iconographic and archaeological sources. The documentation’s precious contents highlight the social relationship and the organization of a group facing danger. The “forts villageois” phenomenon served a larger reflection about types and forms of defensive measures. A comparative approach on the structures questions fortifications models and their evolution. Beyond the human and community scope the multi-scale study points out the relationships between community and lord, the relation to the territory and the interaction between Toulouse and the surrounding villages, as well as the solidarity networks in a shared space protection

The first version of "Chroniques des rois, ducs et princes de Bretagne" was ordered by Jean de Châteaugiron, lord of Derval and Pierre Le Baud finished writing it in 1480. Only two manuscripts reached us : the original, preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (ms fr.8266),was partially edited in 1907 by Charles de LaLande de Calan, whereas the second, which canbe found at the Bibliothèque municipale d'Angers and is a copy of the first, was never transcripted. This edition transcribes the manuscript 941 in its entirety, meaning all the three books written on over 406 folios. This transcription also analyses the method the chronicler used to compile the text, the linguistic characteristics of the scribe andthe differences with the manuscript 8266 of theBibliothèque nationale de France. A glossary, aswell as an index of persons, an index of locations and an index of sources, will also enlighten the historical, geographical and cultural aspects of this publication

Until the end of the 12th century, the life of Clovis, a Merovingian king and the first Christian king of the Frankish kingdom, who reigned from about the year 481 until his death on November 27, 511, seems to have been rarely depicted in images. From 1200 onwards, however, iconography picturing the Merovingian king expanded, spreading more and more widely in the kingdom of France. This evolution reflects a change in the interest accorded to Clovis over the last three centuries of the Middle Ages. In order to grasp the substance of this change, this study analyzes the importance attributed to the image of Clovis in the kingdom of France between 1200 et 1500. To this end, an examination of known Clodovian iconography has been conducted. First, this evaluation of the quantity and spread of Clodovian imagery in the kingdom allows us to determine the magnitude of the dissemination of the king’s image as well as the scope and diversity of the public to which it was addressed. This examination then allows us to analyze the modalities of depicting the sovereign’s history, based on variations in the message spread by the iconography. Finally, the study of the meaning of the images and of their function yields – at a time when what Colette Beaune calls the “national sentiment” is forming and when the kingdom encounters one of the major conflicts of the period, the Hundred Years War – an understanding of the reasons for the development of the imagery depicting Clovis and for the variations in the place accorded to the king in the iconographic discourse spread between 1200 and 1500 in the kingdom of France

Formed by Saint Louis in favour of his son Pierre, who died in 1284, the Alençon appanage revived in 1290 when King Philippe le Bel bestowed it upon his brother Charles de Valois. Seven princes, who became dukes as of 1415, succeeded him till 1525. Cousins to Kings and Peers of France, the Valois-Alençons turned the Norman-Percheron appanage into the heart of a principality stretching from the Pays de Caux to the banks of the Loire river, from the « Marches de Bretagne » to the Chartres area. The principates of Pierre II (1367-1404) and his son Jean I, who died in Azincourt in 1415, marked the heyday of this political piece of work supported by the King. Henceforth, rooted in this appannage, the Alençons reformed the administration of territories, surrounded themselves with versatile officers and endowed their principality with institutions traditionally devoted to the governance of states: an active chancellery, a general treasury, an exchequer and even a deemed sovereign court of justice. At the new castle of Argentan, the prince court hosted some two hundred and thirty officers and servants, and sparkled with a so far unsuspected lustre. The prosopographic approach, which studies the sociological features and the influence networks shaping the careers of the agents of authority, herein guides the discovery of the princely administration
Dugaz, Lucien. "Le Livre des fais d'armes et de chevalerie de Christine de Pizan. Édition critique." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019USPCA050.
Повний текст джерелаThe principle study of this doctoral thesis is the critical edition of the last unedited text of Christine de Pizan, the Livre des fais d’armes et de chevalerie. It was composed in 1410, at the outbreak of the first civil war posing Bourguignons against Armagnacs, three years after the assassination of Louis d’Orléans on the orders of Jean the Fearless and five years preceding the Battle of Azincourt. This forgotten masterpiece of Pizan was destined generally to educate young men of arms, and particularly for the instruction of the Dauphin, Louis de Guyenne. The Fais d’armes, a re-writing as much as it is a compilation, was upon its publication a reference work on chivalry, soliciting the authority of Vegetius, Valerius Maximus, Frontinus, L’Arbre des batailles by Honorat Bovet, as well as other oral sources that remain anonymous. This critical edition will allow us to fill significant gaps in the christinienne production of the specula principum and will be equally useful to medievalists as much to jurists and to specialists of military history. This edition, which goes back to the origins of the text, leans on the first exhaustive study of the entire textual tradition (25 text sources, in printed and manuscript forms) that identifies several different versions by the author. This discovery adds a new dimension to the study of this text when considered alongside versions that were re-worked for political purposes. What’s more, the establishment of a stemma codicum allows us to define the relationship between two manuscript families : Family A, which respects Christine de Pizan’s auctorialité ; and Family B, which obliterates her name and femininity.Furthermore, the edition of the text in Middle French, accompanied by philological, linguistic and historical notes and commentaries, allows for future stylistique andlinguistic studies on the author-at-work, changing her text on two occasions. Research on her sources also reveal Christine de Pizan’s techniques as “compilator”. This study also proposes an edition of quotes from Valerius Maximus and Frontinus as translated by Simon de Hesdin to inspire further reading. The edition includes a codicological description of the 25 manuscripts and printed copies, elements describing historical and literary context, and, finally, a linguistic study that adds another voice to the debate surrounding a manuscript containing the Fais d'armes and the question of its potentially “autographic” nature

For a long time, the relations between communication networks and castral sites have been associated with seigniorial taxation (tolls) or military activities (by stopping the trafic). Nevertheless, the coordination of roads, rivers, waterways and castles make appear many dynamic relationships between territories, their economic, political or social organization. The decisive question is to integrate these new perspectives into a representation of the practice of territories to define the real conditions of interrelationship between castral sites and communication networks during the end of the early medieval period and the late Middle Ages. The geographical framework of this thesis, the Lot valley from its source to its confluence, on a course of 485 kilometers (301 miles), allows us to consider the reciprocal permanence of social and spatial relations characterized by a plurality of political groups and struggles of influence between individuals. These different powers (great territorial princes, modest lordships, oligarchy and local aristocracy), whose seigniories and castral domains obtrude along this river, can make spaces, politics, societies and economy interact together to explain the dynamic phenomena that relate to the road, river and castles of the territories observed. This study is enriched by the analysis of archives collected, in nine departmental archive repositories, at the National Library of France (BnF), at the national archives of France or at the Public Record Office of London. This historical work focuses on the various actors of power bordering the Lot and their instruments of land domination in order to understand their logic of power and territorial management regardless of their social rank

Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016AIXM3013/document.
The manuscript Aix-en-Provence, municipal library, 428(306) contains two different texts. The first, La Chanson de Bertrand du Guesclin, is a rimed epic poem telling the life of Bertrand du Guesclin (1320-1380), a Britain knight from a modest background who took part of the One Hundred Years War, and would become the constable of France. This biography has been written by a certain Cuvelier between 1380 and 1385, right after Bertrand's death. The second is a set of seven lyric poems written in memory of Bertrand, three of which were written by Eustache Deschamps. The first text, at the same time historical, epic, a tribute, biographie and poem, has a considerable importance in the literary production of the day as the last chanson de geste to be written in French. The poems celebrating the constable are fully in line with the lyric revival of the end of the 14th century. Through our study, we like to discover or rediscover this underrated work ; we will provide original text of the manuscript, descriptions of the other manuscripts, a literary review including a study of the context and new information about the author, a linguistic study, critical notes, a glossary, an index, a list of proverbs, and a comprehensive bibliography

The fortified medieval areas of the Velay (medieval diocese of Puy-en-Velay) are analysed in their constitution and their use. The survey concerns a corpus of castle sites, fortified towns, fortified houses, priories and fortified churches in 145 communes, mostly in the department of Haute-Loire (France-Auvergne). The changes that these fortified spaces operate during the 13th-15th centuries are highlighted: spatial morphology and choices of occupancy of these areas, evolution of individual seigneurial habitats and enclosures in rural and urban context. The nature of the relations between the different social groups building this fortified territory is mainly documented by texts : relationships between the lords and the bishop of Le Puy or the king, relationships between the lords and the urban or rural communities, emergence of new social groups (the small gentry). The purpose focuses on the articulation of these areas and the social and symbolic relationships that each of the social groups has with fortifications. Thus, the intentions of domination and the resistance of each of the medieval social groups are revealed by analysing the plots, the buildings and the form of the fortification

This thesis analyzes the evolution of the power of the abbots of eleven male Benedictine abbeys of the diocese of Rouen between the end of the 12th century and the middle of the 15th century, focusing on the largest of them (Le Bec, Fécamp, Saint-Ouen, Saint-Wandrille...) but also on more modest and unknown monasteries. At the heart of the reasoning lie the relationship of the abbots with the French and English royal powers. After the integration of Normandy in the Capetian royal domain in 1204, the abbots became royal: studying in particular the acts of the practice, this thesis proposes a definition of this category. The role of Philip Augustus in the building of these relationships between crosiers and crowns is underlined. The political continuation of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century, coupled with economic prosperity, resulted on the one hand in a real freedom of elections in the Norman monasteries and on the other hand in the advent of abbots managers, who even managed to preserve the property of their abbeys located in the lands of the King of England. The beginnings of the Hundred Years’ War were a real turning point: from then on, the abbots had to engage in political affairs and war (especially in the conflict between the King of France and the King of Navarre, then at the time of the conquest of Normandy by Henry V, after his victory at Azincourt in 1415). Based on a prosopography of one hundred and eighty-eight abbots, the thesis also studies the profile of these superiors (their social and geographical origins, their formartion and career, etc.) and the evolution of the abbatial figure over these three centuries: more and more superiors studied at the university and/or gravitated in the circles of power of the Church or of the kings. As a result, they were less and less physically present in their cloisters, accustoming the monks to their absence, while the freedom of the elections was gradually cut off under the influence of the pope and kings. Besides, the study, in particular, of the narrative and figurative sources shows that the representations of their power evolved in parallel: more and more attentive to their external prestige, marked in particular by the wearing of the pontifical insignia, they looked less and less like to the monks who they were ruling. This thesis proposes to read the setting up of the commendatory system in the continuity of these evolutions of the abbatial power, which appear less as a crisis than as a mutation

In the aftermath of the Hundred Years’ War, the King of France, winner by arms in 1453, displays a policy, a speech, a legislative activity, in order to perpetuate peace. Much attention is paid to the restoration of judicial institutions, which contribute to the redefinition of the jurisdictional geography of a kingdom divided for many years. In this context appears a forgotten institution, which had not been mobilized for nearly half a century: the grands jours, consisting in sending for a few weeks of a group of councilors of the Parliament of Paris in a city chosen by the King, to judge on the spot rather than in Paris the appeals for a determined area. Between 1454 and 1459, seven sessions are held in Poitiers, Thouars, Montferrand and Bordeaux, then disappear again from the institutional landscape for more than twenty years. The grands jours appear in this mid-fifteenth century as a political instrument in formation, in a moment of change in both the history of the kingdom of France and in the history of the institution. This instrument allows an intensification of the judicial policy of royalty and the resumption of a judicial relationship between the king, his representatives and his subjects
