PurposeWhile an ever‐increasing body of research on business networks has commented on vertically connected relationships, this study embeds the horizontally connected relationships. Constructed on business network theories the paper aims to add more knowledge on business networks by developing a connection model including both vertical and horizontal connections. The model aims to explore the impact of connections on focal business relationships. It differentiates connected relationships on the basis of their vertical and horizontal natures. The purpose is to grasp the impact of these different connected relationships on the focal business relationship. The focal relationship elements are defined by commitment and trust, which capture their properties from the dyadic interaction and the two types of connected relationships.Design/methodology/approachThe paper tests the theoretical construction empirically. The empirical study is based on the IMP2 survey, utilizing information from extensive interviews with 138 firms regarding their relationships with important foreign customers.FindingsThe statistical findings in the form of a LISREL‐model clearly expose the impact of the horizontal connections and verify the validity of the theoretical model. It depicts that trust increase by vertical connections leading to increased commitment, thus strengthening the relationship while horizontal connection, on the contrary, weakens it. The facts also demonstrate how the horizontal connections impose effects on technological long‐term investments.Originality/valueMarketing researchers advocating certain theoretical views are thereby required to observe respect for the market realities with which managers are confronted.

We study some sub-Riemannian objects (such as horizontal connectivity, horizontal connection, horizontal tangent plane, horizontal mean curvature) in hypersurfaces of sub-Riemannian manifolds. We prove that if a connected hypersurface in a contact manifold of dimension more than three is noncharacteristic or with isolated characteristic points, then there exists at least a piecewise smooth horizontal curve in this hypersurface connecting any two given points in it. In any sub-Riemannian manifold, we obtain the sub-Riemannian version of the fundamental theorem of Riemannian geometry: there exists a unique nonholonomic connection which is completely determined by the sub-Riemannian structure and is “symmetric” and compatible with the sub-Riemannian metric. We use this nonholonomic connection to study horizontal mean curvature of hypersurfaces.

The linear frame bundle over a smooth manifold is considered. The mapping dе defined by the differentials of the first-order frame e is a lift to the normal N, i. e., a space complementing the first-order tangent space to the second-order tangent space to this bundle. In particular, the map­ping defined by the differentials of the vertical vector of this frame is a vertical lift into normal N. The lift dе allows us to construct a prolongation both of the tangent space and its vertical subspace into the second-order tangent space, more precisely into the normal N. The normal lift dе defines the normal prolon­gation of the tangent space (i. e. the normal N) and its vertical subspace. The vertical lift defines the vertical prolongation of the tangent space and its vertical subspace. The differential of an arbitrary vector field on the linear frame bundle is a complete lift from the first-order tangent space to the second-order tangent space to this bundle. It is known that the action of vector fields as differential operators on functions coincides with action of the differentials of these functions as 1-forms on these vector fields. Horizontal vectors played a dual role in the fibre bundle. On the one hand, the basic horizontal vectors serve as opera­tors for the covariant differentiation of geometric objects in the bundle. On the other hand, the differentials of these geometric objects can be con­sidered as forms (including tangential-valued ones) and their values on basic horizontal vectors give covariant derivatives of these geometric ob­jects. For objects which covariant derivatives require the second-order con­nection, the covariant derivatives are equal to the values of the differen­tials of these objects on horizontal vectors in prolonged affine connectivi­ty. Prolongations of the basic horizontal vectors, i. e., the second-order horizontal vectors for prolonged connection, were constructed. The sec­ond-order tangent space is represented as a straight sum of the first-order tangent space, vertical prolongations of the vertical and horizontal sub­spaces, and horizontal prolongation of the horizontal subspace.

To evaluate the performance of wheel coupler formwork support components, the bearing capacity of the horizontal bar, the shear capacity of the wheel, the shear capacity of the sleeve, and the stability bearing capacity of the single- and double-layer vertical poles were investigated through systematic full-scale tests. The feasibility and correctness of the experiment were verified by comparing the results with those of a finite element analysis. The results demonstrated that the weak point of the horizontal bar was the bearing capacity of the weld at the connection between the socket and the horizontal bar. Preventing buckling failure of the weld at the connection between the horizontal bar and the socket was critical to ensure the bearing capacity of the horizontal bar. Under the action of a shearing force, the wheel underwent buckling failure of the welding seam at the connection between the wheel and the vertical pole. With a decreasing number of connecting horizontal bars on the wheel, the shear capacity of the wheel decreased significantly. The shear failure mode of the sleeve was buckling failure. The connection weld did not undergo buckling failure during the load-bearing process, which was basically meeting the serviceability state. The failure of a single-layer vertical pole was typical with lateral displacement buckling, while the double-layer vertical pole did not undergo buckling with lateral displacement.

The authors present an experimental and analytical study of slotted-in connections for joining walls in the Masonite flexible building (MFB) system. These connections are used for splicing wall elements and for tying down uplifting forces and resisting horizontal shear forces in stabilizing walls. The connection plates are inserted in a perimeter slot in the PlyBoard™ panel (a composite laminated wood panel) and fixed mechanically with screw fasteners. The load-bearing capacity of the slotted-in connection is determined experimentally and derived analytically for different failure modes. The test results show ductile postpeak load-slip characteristics, indicating that a plastic design method can be applied to calculate the horizontal load-bearing capacity of this type of shear walls.

Multiple core-sheath flow was realized using matrix arrangement of 3D sheath flows. The sheath flow was hydrodynamically formed in a flow shift area which has symmetrical microgrooves on channel walls. Vertical and horizontal alignments of the sample streams are a key element of matrix configuration. The flow shift areas were connected in parallel to achieve horizontal alignment of the sheath flow. The cascade connection of the flow shift areas is used for vertical alignment of the sheath flow. In order to achieve matrix arrangement of core-sheath flow, combination of the parallel and cascade connections was utilized. In this work, the horizontal and vertical configurations of the 2-sample sheath flow were demonstrated. Two streams of the vertically aligned 2-sample sheath flow were joined horizontally, and, as a result, 4-sample core-sheath flow of matrix configuration was obtained successfully.

An Ehresmann connection on a fiber bundle pi: E --> M is defined by prescribing a suitable horizontal subbundle H of the tangent bundle piT: TE --> E. For a horizontal bundle to be suitable, it must have a property called horizontal path lifting. This property ensures that the horizontal bundle determines a system of parallel transport between the fibers of E. The main result of this dissertation is a geometric characterization of the horizontal bundles on E that have horizontal path lifting, and hence are connections. In particular, it is shown that a horizontal bundle has horizontal path lifting if and only if its horizontal spaces are bounded away from the vertical spaces, uniformly along fibers of E. In order for a horizontal bundle to admit a system of parallel transport or have holonomy, it must be a connection. However, certain other geometric properties that are usually attributed to connections are actually properties of arbitrary horizontal bundles. These properties are studied in the case when E is either a vector bundle or tangent bundle, accordingly.

The increasing of using precast concrete panels, lack of standardization, lack of studies on precast concrete panels and its connections devices on Brazil, has led to the need of manual and design criteria of precast concrete panel connections. Although the designers and precast concrete panel manufacturers is using foreign standards when its available and their empirical knowledge on the specification and connections design criteria, the lack of manuals become hard to find solutions that provide easiness of precast concrete panel s employment. Connections are fundamental part of the precast structures. For the building assembly are necessary linking devices which influences the production process, the efficiency of casting, storage, transport, handling and especially in the assembly on site. This work presents the concept, technical features and functions of main types of spandrel panel connections and the main structure of building, and identifies typical connections and the general design recommendation. This report purpose the put in connection as a new classification of connection type.
Dada a falta de normatização, escassez de estudos sobre painéis pré-moldados, suas ligações e o amplo emprego de painéis pré-moldados nos dias atuais, percebeu-se uma necessidade tanto acadêmica quanto dos projetistas por material de consulta. As empresas fabricantes de painéis se baseiam em normas estrangeiras e no conhecimento adquirido empiricamente para o projeto de ligações de painéis, deste fato surge, portanto, a dificuldade de encontrar soluções para ligações que propiciem a eficácia da aplicação dos painéis. As ligações são parte fundamental dos sistemas pré-moldados, já que para a composição da edificação são necessários dispositivos interligantes , que intrinsecamente interferem em toda a cadeia produtiva e de montagem, ou seja, regem a eficiência nas etapas de fôrma, moldagem, estoque, transporte, manuseio e principalmente na montagem em canteiro. Neste trabalho são apresentadas ligações entre painéis de fachada horizontais pré-moldadas de concreto, a conceituação e a caracterização dos principais tipos e funções das ligações, identificando as diversas ligações existentes relacionando indicações gerais de projeto, além da proposição das ligações por encaixe como nova classificação de elementos de ligação.

The topic of this master‘s thesis was to create a settlement structure on the territory of the cadastral territory of the town of Náměšť nad Oslavou. Specifically in the southwestern part of the town, in the places of today's agricultural areas. The main goal of the thesis is to create a quality residential structure for the entire area, which will connect to the surrounding development, to create a center with urban amenities for this newly designed neighborhood. A key aspect of the design is the transport connection to the existing road network of the city and overcoming the barrier formed by the railway line. The proposed development responds to the current and future anticipated needs of the city. Taking into account the size, the proposed area is divided into three parts with regard to the time sequence and the nature of the development. From an urban point of view, the first phase builds on the existing network of streets and creates a transition between the original and the proposed development and proposes transport connections to the area. In the second and third phase, the remaining area of the proposed area is resolved, by a system of regular streets designed in places with a small slope of the terrain, connected by short streets with a higher slope. The master‘s thesis addresses the connection between the city and greenery, increases the attractiveness of the area by designing public facilities and services and works with visual axes from the existing housing and commercial development to the proposed location.

This study aimed to investigate the study analyzed Men's Artistic Gymnastics Horizontal Bar entire action choreography and connection points. Gymnastics Men's horizontal bar final score project is divided by a D points + E points. D points included the successfully implemented and have valid movement Difficulty Value of ten scores, class of group scores meets the five categories, and connecting flying movement is connected points. E points by the referee assigns a score based on artistic quality, implementation and technical performance of the entire action. How to arrangement the entire action to obtain higher D scores is the focus of this study was to investigate. Research methods in the National Games, Asian Games, Olympics Games Men's Artistic Gymnastics horizontal bar final eight players for the study, analysis of players arrangement the entire action difficulty value scores, connection points and final score of differences. The results obtained the entire action choreography to National Games players, did not pursue the implementation of difficult action to meet the various group of scores, and there is no fight between the connection points flying movement to enhance the D scores, compared to Asian Games and Olympic Games players D scores that are distinctly different. The conclusion of Asian Games and Olympic Games players elements of in the horizontal bar project wins, not only the pursuit of the entire action of difficult moves choreography value points, but also fight for to enhance the connection D score extra points, improve the final score to increase opportunities for victory. Precise connection flight movement, make the arrangement movement be more thrilling, novel and clever, improve the entire action overall rating, worthy of our players to follow, As a result the final score can be improved to increase the chance of winning.

This chapter defends an indirect model of public justification, which relieves ordinary citizens of the burdens of public reason and imposes them only on public officials, and especially on elected partisans. The chapter further defends the view that public officials ought to hold each other accountable with regard to their use of public reasons, without the need for direct scrutiny by ordinary citizens, and that they ought to be responsive to citizens’ non-public reasons, and endeavour to find an internal connection between those and public reasons. This twofold process of horizontal and vertical accountability, the chapter claims, especially applies to elected partisans. The chapter concludes by illustrating how the two most popular electoral systems, first-past-the-post (FPTP) and proportional representation (PR), can be more or less conducive to this bifurcated process of public justification.

This chapter lists in brief some of the key claims for which the book has argued. It then provides a conclusion to the book, relating some of the book’s recurring themes to other debates in the philosophy of biology and sketching some directions for future work. The first theme is the relationship between statistics and causality, which is connected to the long-running clash between ‘statisticalist’ and ‘causalist’ interpretations of evolutionary theory. The second theme is the way in which inclusive fitness synthesizes the organism-centred and gene-centred perspectives on evolution, pointing the way towards a Hamiltonian approach to culture that may offer a novel synthesis of agent-centred and meme-centred approaches to cultural change. The third theme is the conceptual connection, due to the importance of horizontal transmission in both cases, between genetic evolution in microbes and cultural evolution in humans.

Pragmatist Egalitarianism argues that a deep impasse plagues philosophical egalitarianism, and sets forth a conception of equality rooted in American pragmatist thought that successfully mediates that impasse. The book argues that there is a division within egalitarianism between those who regard equality as a fundamentally distributive ideal and those who construe it as a normative conception of human relationships. These rival conceptions are referred to as “vertical” and “horizontal” egalitarianism, respectively. Despite their close connection, these ideals may come apart. And yet, so much philosophical writing on equality is marked by what looks like a zero-sum competition for the same conceptual turf, as if the whole truth about equality must be captured by a single idea or an exclusive set of principles. One of the book’s core arguments is that we should reject the central premises upon which such disagreement turns: that equality is a single idea, that it has a fundamental locus, and that there is a singular or primary route to the achievement of a genuinely egalitarian society. The pragmatist view the book sets forth recasts egalitarianism in light of three mutually reinforcing variables—the institutional, the personal, and the cultural—each of which is best accentuated in one of a trio of pragmatists, John Dewey, William James, and Richard Rorty. If the three variables are mutually complicit in promoting inequality, an egalitarianism that takes this seriously will treat all three as equally (though differently) important in making things better.

The Comparative Method in historical linguistics distinguishes resemblances among languages due to vertical transmission from those due to horizontal transmission, and from resemblances due to non-historical factors like chance. Alternative phylogenetic methods that seek long-range connections among languages have not been shown to consistently detect this distinction. Derived from the Comparative Method are the study of language contact and areal connections, lexicostatistical dating methods and linguistic-paleontological methods for reconstructing cultural knowledge. Methodological debates in historical linguistics, and application of these methods to cases in the linguistic history of the Southwest, are reviewed, suggesting that, in spite of the paucity of available data for many languages, historical linguistic methods have an important role to play in developing hypotheses about Southwestern prehistory.

It tracks the transverse circulation of aesthetic ideas in fiction and argues that at stake in fin-de-siècle American writers’ aesthetic turn was not only the theorization of aesthetic experience, but also a fashioning forth of an understanding of aesthetic form in relation to political arguments and debates about available modes of sociability and cultural expression. To track these practices it performs an interpretive method Seitler calls “lateral reading,” a mode of interpretation that moves horizontally through various historical entanglements and across the fields of the arts to make sense of, and see in a new light, their connections, challenges, and productive frictions.

Estevam Matiazzi’s poetics are memorably reflected in the title of his colorful poem collection, most of which are written in poetic prose, with singular didacticism. “Life Seen Through Windows: before and beyond them” is a work marked by movements and approaches in a mutating world view, that established relations with its time. ‘Drunken times’, actually, pandemic times, Covid-19 times. In a cathartic process, the poetic persona gazes outside his window, a narrow spaces’ view that creates an egregore of love. Engaged in the notion of roughness within the historical moment, he creates poems, comforting hearts in distress and full of uncertainties. The title has a direct connection with the works’ poetry; it brings relations in constant change, a shape still undetermined, a state beyond any mold, any casted matter. Beyond anything pre-fixed, anything pre-established. Thus, in a language of light and shadows, “Life Seen Through Windows: before and beyond them” is a beacon in the darkness of these pandemic times (Márcia Lembrança). Life Seen Through Windows – behind and in front of them are 40 poems from quarantine, written in 2020, in the context of Covid-19 pandemic. The view from the windows in the apartment where I live in Belo Horizonte, side by side with the song “Window’s Scenery” – written by Lô Borges and Fernando Brant for the album Corner Club, released in 1972, year in which I was born –, are the inspiration for these poems. Nearly 50 years after this masterpiece, between the slot that remains between buildings, I watch, beyond the windows, the mountain ranges that still encircle the capitol of Minas Gerais, either under blue, open skies or under thick grey clouds… From behind windows, I listen to radios, watch screens and see continued ailments; deforested, burned Amazon, slighted traditional cultures; inflation on the rise, democracy under threat; drama and mire, plots and fire…

The main milestones of the formation and development of astronomical science in Kharkiv during 1883–1945 are reconstructed on the example of the activities of the astronomical observatory of Kharkiv University. During this period, the outstanding worldview science in Kharkiv has achieved significant success: the works of Kharkiv astronomers have received world recognition; a well-known scientific planetary school has been established at the Observatory; the scientific community highly appreciated the research on the physics and chemistry of the Moon, the giant and small planets of the Solar System. The primary goal of the research is to inscribe the history of the university Observatory into the European and world context. Its purpose is to summarize the results of a comprehensive historical ad scientific study of the development of astronomical research in Kharkiv at the end of the 19th century – the first half of the 20th century and identification of ways of further scientific research. The completed research, which continues the problems of works devoted to the study of the history of astronomical science in Ukraine, focuses on expanding the well-known source base by attracting new retro-information resources. In particular, the monograph used a significant array of archival primary sources from almost twenty archival and library institutions of different countries. Most of them were introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, which allowed to determine and specify the sequence of stages of development of astronomical science in Kharkiv during the research period, to clarify and identify the little-known circumstances of the observatory life. The methodological basis of the study is the principles of historism, objectivity and a systematic approach to studying the problem. To solve specific problematic tasks in the monograph, general scientific and specially historical methods were used which allowed to study, analyze and summarize the presented factual material in a complex manner. The main sections of the monograph represent the dynamics of replenishment of the instrumental base of the university observatory, the chronology of the construction of the observatory complex of buildings at the location of the modern Scientific Research Institute of Astronomy of the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. According to the author’s periodization, the stages of formation of subjects and directions of scientific work of university astronomers have been analyzed, including: seismic observations with the help of horizontal Rebeur-Paschwitz pendulums, research of the activity of the Sun, astrometric observations on the Repsold meridian circle of for the purpose of compiling a catalog of zodiac stars, studying lunar eclipses and meteor showers. The participation of university astronomers in the creation of the plan of the city of Kharkiv and its connection with the general network of precise geometric leveling of the Military Topographic Department of the General Staff; the organization of observations by an expedition of Kharkiv astronomers of the total Solar eclipse of 1914 in Henichesk; the creation of the School-workshop of precision mechanics at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University were considered; information on the participation of Kharkiv astronomers in the events of the civil war during the Ukrainian Revolution was documented. The scientific research activity of Kharkiv astronomers during 1920-1930-s which was devoted to carrying out important astrometric works on meridian observations of star declinations by absolute methods and observations of Kopf-Rentz stars according to the programs of the International Astronomical Union; the initiation of the creation of the Catalog of faint stars; research in astrophysics aimed at studying the physical conditions on the Moon and the Sun, planets and the interstellar environment; performing long series of spectrophotometric observations of the Moon, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn under different conditions of observation; study of the kinematics of stellar systems of different order, the physical parameters and evolution of stars, the morphology of the Galaxy, the nature of the stellar subsurfaces and atmospheres, dust and gas nebulae, new stars and the variability of stars have been considered; the directions of solid works carried out in the field of celestial mechanics, devoted to the dynamics of the minor planets of the Jupiter group, the definition and improvement of the orbits of minor planets have been clarified. The development of amateur astronomy in Kharkiv, in particular, the functioning of circles and societies that directed their activities to the dissemination of astronomical knowledge, was highlighted; the participation of their representatives in astronomical observations at the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory was emphasized. Reconstructed the development of historical events in the 1930s related to the involvement of Soviet and Western astronomers in the processes of political confrontation between the USSR and the Western world; investigated the course of circumstances that prevented the implementation of the project of creating a new modern astronomical center of national importance – the central Ukrainian observatory in Kharkiv; the participation of an expedition of Kharkiv astronomers in the observation of the «great Soviet eclipse» – the total solar eclipse of 1936 – in the North Caucasus is highlighted; established the facts of political «purges» and repressions by the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs ( the NKVD) in the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory. The activity of the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory has been documented and authentic biographical information about its representatives during the Nazi occupation of 1941–1943, the period of the German-Soviet war, has been presented; the unpopular facts of the forced collaboration of some scientists are highlighted; the process of recovery and reconstruction of the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory after the liberation of the city is characterized. With the aim of researching the personal history of Kharkiv astronomy of the studied period, the monograph presents the results of a historical and biographical study of facts of life and scientific heritage of scientists who fully devoted themselves to Science, laid the foundations for the future development of many directions of modern astronomical research, made a significant contribution to the treasury of the national and European astronomical science, whose activities were connected with the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory, in particular: Grigory Levytsky, Ludwig Struve, Mykola Evdokymov, Otto Struve, Mykola Barabashov, Boris Gerasimovich, Vasil Fesenkov, Oleksiy Razdolsky, Boris Ostashchenko-Kudryavtsev, Nicholas Bobrovnikov, Paraskovia Parkhomenko, Mstislav Savron, Boris Semeykin, Kostyantyn Savchenko and others (25 biographical essays are presented). A significant part of the mentioned factual material was also introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. A separate section of the monograph provides chronologically structured information that reflects the sequence of research work of the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory employees during the period under study: from astrometric observations of stars and seismic research to spectrohelioscopic and spectroheliographic observations of the Sun and the initiation of the Kharkiv school of planetary science. It is assumed that the materials of the monograph will be used in research work devoted to the study of the process of institutionalization of astronomical research in Kharkiv at the end of the 19th century – the first half of the 20th century.

AbstractMicroplastic pollution is a big and rapidly growing environmental problem. Although the direct effects of microplastic pollution are increasingly studied, the indirect effects are hardly investigated, especially in the context of spreading of disease and antibiotic resistance genes, posing an apparent hazard for human health. Microplastic particles provide a hydrophobic surface that provides substrate for attachment of microorganisms and readily supports formation of microbial biofilms. Pathogenic bacteria such as fish pathogens Aeromonas spp., Vibrio spp., and opportunistic human pathogens like Escherichia coli are present in these biofilms. Moreover, some of these pathogens are shown to be multidrug resistant. The presence of microplastics is known to enhance horizontal gene transfer in bacteria and thus, may contribute to dissemination of antibiotic resistance. Microplastics can also adsorb toxic chemicals like antibiotics and heavy metals, which are known to select for antibiotic resistance. Microplastics may, thus, serve as vectors for transport of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes in the aquatic environment. In this book chapter, we provide background information on microplastic biofouling (“plastisphere concept”), discuss the relationship between microplastic and antibiotic resistance, and identify knowledge gaps and directions for future research.

Abstract“Tell me how much your friends earn, and I’ll tell you if you smoke, what diseases you have and how long your life will be!” With this somewhat pointed statement, we wanted to shed light on the empirically well-confirmed connection between social and health inequalities from the perspective of network research at the beginning of this book (see chapter “Social networks and health inequalities: a new perspective for research”). Social networks are understood here as mediating entities at an intermediate or meso-level, whose structure and function mediate between vertical (income, education, occupational status, etc.) as well as horizontal (e.g., age, gender, ethnic origin) inequalities and health inequalities (e.g., life expectancy, morbidity rates). Besides this mediating influence a moderating relationship wherein social networks amplify or diminish vertical and horizontal inequalities seems to be reasonable.

The most common type of a steel concrete composite beam is the one using conventional welded headed studs to connect the top flange of a steel beam to the concrete slab. However, the monolithic structure between the headed studs and the concrete slab prevents the deconstruction of the beam. More sustainable solutions in construction can be achieved by developing demountable connections which allow for fully deconstruction and reuse of all structural systems. This paper presents a novel demountable shear connector for use in steel concrete composite beams in conjunction with precast hollow core slab units. The demountable connection proposed has the advantages of minimal use of in situ concrete required only in specific regions, increased ductility due to the unique shape of the shear connector and since it is not embedded in in situ concrete, it facilitates the deconstruction procedure. Ten horizontal push out tests aiming at investigating the structural performance of the demountable shear connector were carried out. The strength of the connection is predicted using simple mechanics based on plastic beam analysis. The experimental results showed that the proposed demountable shear connector can achieve increased strength depending on the geometric characteristics of the connector, a ductile slip-load curve and a very high slip capacity.

<p>A socket connection is one of the emerging and most recommended joint connections in prefabricated substructures. At present, a large number of researches on socket connections has been carried out and most of them deal with pier-spread footing in the shallow foundation. This paper aims to study the effect of axial compression ratio using quasi-static tests of 2 specimens with socket connections. Specimen M1 is subjected to vertical and horizontal loading, whereas Specimen M2 is subjected to horizontal loading only. The experimental results showed that the axial compression ratio has a huge influence on the socket wall stress, i.e., the greater the axial compression ratio, the greater the socket maximum wall stress. But under the same horizontal force, the greater the axial compression ratio, the smaller the socket wall stress. And during increment of axial compression ratio, horizontal bearing capacity and horizontal stiffness of pier increase significantly.</p>

Abstract With the increase in shale oil and gas activity and complexity, companies deploy new solutions to safely and efficiently drill, complete, and produce wells in unconventional plays. These include Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) connections, which must withstand installation, stimulation, and production loads specific to this application. Industry available standards provide manufacturers and operators a framework for quality founded on best practices and testing. In some instances, existing testing protocols may not be adequate (e.g. insufficient or overconservative) to assess connections’ performance for this application. For this reason, the American Petroleum Institute established an expert working group to develop Technical Report 5SF (TR 5SF) intended to evaluate casing connections performance in multi-fractured horizontal wells. The objective of this paper is to present a set of verified testing protocols applicable to casing connections used in the most common shale plays, complementing the existing body of knowledge. We discuss testing elements and parameters tailored to the conditions of various shale plays. Based on the operations planned for the life of a well, the testing procedure is adjusted to resemble the expected conditions and loads in the correct order. This includes make-up, high-cycle fatigue associated with the casing string installation, thread compound degradation under temperature and time, and mechanical load cycles generated by stimulation. Specimen sealability is confirmed under production loads, after which failure testing is performed. Some of the inputs to build the testing protocol are: maximum internal pressure, axial load, dogleg severity, number of cycles, temperature, and fluid type. Since connections play a crucial role in the integrity of a well, a testing procedure to ensure their performance is shown. Testing protocols for Multi-fractured Horizontal Wells (MFHW) applied to two connection types are presented, highlighting how tailored testing protocols and robust engineering improve product reliability and well integrity assurance. We compile a set of testing inputs for the most relevant shale plays worldwide, together with the testing elements, sequence, and acceptance criteria. This should help end users validate and benchmark products’ performance while improving industry knowledge of connections capabilities.

A new beam-to-column (horizontal brace-to-leg) and bracing-to-frame (diagonal brace-to-horizontal brace/leg) connection was developed. It is a comprehensive package in which the solution to all of the shortcomings and deficiencies of all conventional and/or commonly used connections is provided. The major deficiency of basically all the existing beam-to-column connections is their inability to deliver large rotations. In this devised connection, it has been solved by using a totally different geometry—a geometry which does not restrict the joint from deforming freely in a smooth, uniform and non-violent manner. Such mode of deformation, if delivered by a ductile material, should lead to a high energy dissipation capacity. Especially, if the ductility of the constituting material of the connection is not degraded as a result of fabrication operations, or if so, it is restored through practicing a suitable heat treatment process, e.g. annealing, the energy dissipation capacity should improve substantially. Moreover, in order to attract the damage and prevent it from spreading through the beam (bracing) and the column (leg), whose replacement is formidable, the connection should work in a ‘sacrificial’ capacity. This, together with making it ‘replaceable,’ will reduce the cost of aftermath repair substantially, while replacing the damaged beam or column, if possible, is very costly. In addition to its high rotational (bending) capacity, at least 6 times those of conventional joints (depending on the connection design), its ‘shear deformation capacity’ is quite considerable, absolutely incomparable with those of its conventional counterparts, which are virtually ‘nil.’ This connection is a ‘self-contained separate entity’ which comprises two parallel attachment plates between which two circular, or else, tubes are laid and fixed through welding, though alternatively the whole combination can be produced by extrusion. In the ‘original version’ of the connection, the two plates are laid in a parallel relation with the axis of bending, whereas in its ‘alternate version,’ they are laid in an orthogonal relation with the axis of bending. Tests carried out on specimens of the two distinct versions of the connection proved all its claimed characteristics, both in shear and bending. In particular, those carried out more recently, not reported in previous papers (OMAE’02-28264 & OMAE’03-37292), were quite revealing with regard to the ‘shear strength’ and the ‘shear deformation capacity’ of the original version (horizontally-laid-tube, HLT, version) of the connection—far beyond what was expected by the authors.

Hybrid girders with corrugated web are increasingly used in bridge engineering due to its numerous favorable properties. For the web-to-slab connection different layouts have been developed in the past, however, just a few design proposals can be found in the international literature for the determination of the connection’s resistance, especially for the embedded types. In case of these connections the corrugated web is simply embedded into the concrete slab strengthened by transverse rebars through concrete dowels or horizontal headed studs welded to the web. The aim of the current research program is to investigate the structural behavior and the shear capacity of embedded connections by full scale push-out tests. In the current paper the results of 5 push-out tests are introduced having different embedded connection types investigating (i) the effect of the embedding depth, (ii) the existence of the concrete dowels (through cut-outs in the steel web) with transverse rebars and (iii) the influence of the steel flange. These parameters may have significant influence on the behavior and capacity of embedded type connections, which are studied in the research program. During the tests the applied load and the slip between the steel web and concrete slabs are measured in order to study the initial stiffness, the ductility and the shear capacity of the connections.

<p>The precast concrete bridge pier in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China, was used as the research object to compare the longitudinal and transverse force differences of the bridge pier and further analyze the force characteristics of the bridge pier connection structure. The refined nonlinear finite element model with the load direction and axial pressure ratio as the variation parameters was established to analyze the horizontal force-displacement curve, anchor force, shear force of notched perfobond connector, strain distribution of steel jacket and notched perfobond connector-concrete relative slip. The results show that the concrete damage, anchor bolt action, strain distribution of steel jacket and notched perfobond connector-concrete relative slip are different in the longitudinal and transverse direction of the bridge pier. The bearing capacity of large axial pressure piers is larger than that of small axial pressure piers. The compression side damage of precast piers occurs at the concrete interface above the connection device. The shear force of outer notched perfobond connector is less than that of inner notched perfobond connector.</p>

In this study, two novel steel connections are introduced by replacements in the conventional end-plate connection with an H-or I-shaped cross-section as a Short Stub Column (SSC). In the first connection, the SSC flange is bolted to the column flange, and the beam is welded to the stub flange. In the second connection, after welding the SSC flange to the column flange and welding the beam to an end-plate, the end-plate is bolted to the SSC flange. The flange and web of the stub are reinforced using horizontal stiffeners to transfer the beam moment. Stiffeners could be employed with various thicknesses and configurations such that the strength and ductility of the joint could be adjusted. In this study, the Finite Element Model (FEM) model of a conventional welded and bolted end-plate connection, subjected to cyclic loading, is primarily calibrated using experimental data from previous studies. After confirming the model's performance, the behavior of the two proposed connections, in comparison with it, has been studied. The hysteresis diagrams have been obtained for each case, followed by extracting the effective parameters and comparing them. The results show that the two Proposed Connections reduce the stress in the panel zone and increase the ductility compared to the previously confirmed end-plates. All the samples in this study satisfy the fundamental requirements for rigid beam-to-column connections, according to AISC.

To clarify the buckling behavior of a wheel coupler high-formwork support system with a diagonal bracing, the positive and negative bending behaviors of the connection joints of the support were systematically studied through experiments. Through a parametric analysis and a finite element analysis, a precise numerical model of the connection joints of the wheel coupler was established and verified. Based on the characteristics of the semi-rigid connections, the buckling behavior of the overall structure was analyzed. The results showed that the failure modes in the positive direction were correlated with the insertion depth of the socket into the template; the greater the depth, the more likely the socket was to fracture. The failure modes in the negative direction were closely related to the insertion depth and the bending of the vertical post. An appropriate joint density was conducive to the overall stability. In the presence of a lateral constraint at the top, the greater the angle between the diagonal bracing and the horizontal plane, the better the overall stability under the same joint density. The optimal layout of the vertical diagonal bracing was a 2-span, 4-step arrangement, and the optimal angle was in the range of 30–70°. In the absence of a lateral constraint at the top, the smaller the angle between the diagonal bracing and the horizontal plane, the better the overall stability under the same joint density. The optimal angle was approximately 30° when the lift height was moderate.

The response of exposed column base connections for L-shaped column is investigated through finite element analysis (FEA) in this paper which is affected by complex interactions among different components. Three finite element models are constructed to simulate the response of these connections under axial and cyclic horizontal loading, which interrogate a range of variables including anchor rod strength, base plate size and thickness. The results of the simulations provide insights into internal stress distributions which have not been measured directly through experiments. The key findings indicate that thicker base plates tend to shift the stresses to the toe of the base plate, while thinner plates concentrate the stresses under the column flange. Base on the analytical results, a hysteretic model is proposed to describe the cyclic moment-rotation response of exposed column base connections. The core parameters used to define the backbone curve of the hysteretic model are calibrated through configurational details. The comparison between the simulation and the calculated values indicates that the hysteretic model is suitable to characterize the key aspects of the physical response, including pinching, recentering and flag-shaped hysteresis phenomenon. Limitations of the model are outlined.
