Professor Tadeusz Skulina (1929–1992) was born in Katowice but from the Second World War he was connected with Great Poland. Also in Poznań, he studied Polish Studies and following his graduation became employed at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań where he completed the consecutive stages of his scholarly career. As a disciple of Professor Władysław Kuraszkiewicz he conducted research on the Polish language of the Old-Polish era and of the 16th century. His doctoral thesis (1964) was devoted to historical phonetics and historical dialectology but soon he changed his scholarly interests and entered the field of Slavic studies, especially East-Slavic languages. In his habilitation thesis he discussed the question of the Old-Ruthenian anthroponymy. This thesis, published in 1973, was the first original, so extensive and detailed thesis about the Old-Ruthenian names. As we know, in the period following the receipt of his habilitation degree Professor Tadeusz Skulina had plans to prepare a monograph about Polish feminine onomastics. He had pursued this for years, however, unfortunately, never managed to prepare a synthesis. He only left an unfinished editorial draft of this book. Apart from research activities, Professor Skulina was involved in didactics and also performed responsible administrative functions at the Institute of Polish Philology, was a member of numerous scholarly societies. For his achievements, he received many awards and honours. Professor Tadeusz Skulina died in 1992 after a long and emaciating illness. The scholarly achievements he has left inspire the successive generations of researchers. He also left unfinished written works and ideas which he never managed to realize.

Walter Wilson Stothers was born in Glasgow on 8 November 1946. A third (youngest) son, he had the identical name to his father. From childhood, however, he had always been known by his middle name ‘Wilson’, so that his father, a Glasgow GP, would never be referred to as ‘Old Walter’. His mother, as Jean Young Kyle, had herself graduated in Mathematics in 1927, a rare achievement for a woman at that time. After attending the local primary school 1952–1956, Wilson completed his primary education in the preparatory classes in Allan Glen's School, then a distinguished Glasgow boys school with a scientific emphasis, progressing to the secondary school in 1958 and ending by becoming Dux in 1964. He also played in the school rugby first XV. From 1964–1968 he was a student in the Science Faculty of Glasgow University. His original intention was to take Honours in Chemistry and, indeed, he won the Chemistry prize in his first year. But he excelled in all subjects, winning the Faraday medal in the Intermediate Honours (second year) class in Natural Philosophy (Physics). After that he concentrated on Mathematics and became the top student, gaining a First Class Honours degree, as well as the Cunninghame Medal and a Jack Scholarship to Peterhouse College, Cambridge (1968). Before commencing postgraduate studies he married Andrea Watson in September 1968. At Cambridge from 1968–1971 he studied for a Ph.D. in number theory under the supervision of Peter Swinnerton-Dyer and graduated in 1972 with the thesis Some Discrete Triangle Groups. By then he was becoming aware of the strange realm inhabited by mathematicians that he seemed to be entering. So when his Cambridge room-mate Bob Odoni, at a research meeting they were attending as postgrads, asked, ‘Wilson, do you realise that we are the only normal people here’, Wilson felt compelled to respond, ‘What makes you think that we are normal?’

This study examined some of the factors that influence students’ transition from Ontario high school chemistry to university introductory chemistry. The study was a mixed-methods, multi-phase research study carried out by an undergraduate honours thesis student who had experienced some of these transition issues. Students’ transition into chemistry was reported to be more difficult than their overall transition into university, including their academic transition; they thus appeared to experience a “transition within a transition.” Students identified testing, curricular experience, and the amount of independent work as the principal areas of misalignment between their high school and university chemistry experiences. In exploring the use of support resources, students reported that there were sufficient resource opportunities but typically did not avail themselves of one-on-one interactions. Analysis of the data has led to recommendations for the instructional team for Introductory Chemistry at McMaster University.

John Dyson was born on the 7th January 1941 in Meltham Mills, West Yorkshire, England, and later grew up in Harrogate and Leeds. The proudest moment of John's early life was meeting Freddie Trueman, who became one of the greatest fast bowlers of English cricket. John used a state scholarship to study at Kings College London, after hearing a radio lecture by D. M. McKay. He received a first class BSc Special Honours Degree in Physics in 1962, and began a Ph.D. at the University of Manchester Department of Astronomy after being attracted to astronomy by an article of Zdenek Kopal in the semi-popular journal New Scientist. John soon started work with Franz Kahn, and studied the possibility that the broad emission lines seen from the Orion Nebula were due to flows driven by the photoevaporation of neutral globules embedded in a HII region. John's thesis was entitled “The Age and Dynamics of the Orion Nebula“ and he passed his oral examination on 28th February 1966.

Tarán’s case against the authenticity of Epinomis depends on the claim that it is incompatible with Plato’s Laws. Behind this claim is the uncritical assumption that the Athenian Stranger of Laws speaks for Plato. While the Athenian Stranger of Epinomis clearly does not do so, the same is equally true, albeit more difficult to detect, of the Stranger in Laws. Once the Athenian is recognized as both ambitious and impious, a reconstruction of the last sentence of Epinomis — on which Tarán’s incompatibility thesis principally rests — reveals the theological-political continuity between the two dialogues: the Stranger is intent on bringing the city into being while securing divine sanction for his own code of laws and divine honours for himself. Plato appended the Epinomis to the Laws in order to make it easier for the student to recognize the Stranger’s intentions as well as to draw attention to Book VII of the Laws, the centre of the dialogue once Epinomis is recognized as its thirteenth book; it is here that the Stranger describes how a mathematical and astronomical man may become a god to other men (818b9–d1).

We record with sadness the death of Franz Kahn, a former Associate Editor of the Journal of Plasma Physics.Franz was born in Germany in 1926, but his family emigrated to England in 1938. He attended Oxford University, obtaining First Class Honours in Mathematics in 1947, and continuing as a research student there, eventually gaining his D.Phil. in 1950. His thesis work already involved him in plasma physics, under one of the pioneers of the subject. His supervisor was Sydney Chapman, and his topic was that of the production of plasma by solar flares, and its interaction with the Earth's atmosphere. This field had already been opened by Chapman and a previous pupil, Vincent Ferraro, in the 1930s. The idea had originally been phrased in terms of ‘corpuscles’, i.e. energetic ions and electrons, but it had gradually been realized that electrostatic forces give such a medium a coherence, so that it should be described as a fluid, notwithstanding the lack of collisions. This is of course the basic idea of plasma physics, and when the importance of magnetic fields was included, one had all the ingredients of magnetohydrodynamics.

When I first launched QAR in 1984, I really didn’t think much about its long-term future. I simply wanted to produce a series which would cater for the publication of Queensland-based archaeological research, and especially the substantive material that so often became locked up in theses and reports, seldom to see wider publication. But now that Volume 10 is on my desk I have come to realise that it has served this purpose quite well over the years. The only disappointment to come from my association with this journal is that it is no longer issued annually. As most subscribers will know, the decision to issue the journal occasionally after Volume 9 was forced upon me by a single and very simple fact – a dip in the submission of manuscripts over the past few years. This phenomenon was unexpected as it flew in the face of a steady increase of submissions since the 1984 launch. Furthermore, the slump continues despite numerous pleas and much cajoling of potential contributors, especially among the ranks of recent archaeology graduates with smoking-hot thesis results. Some such individuals of my acquaintance argued that they wanted to publish less substantive overviews in international journals before committing themselves to what they perceived as the ‘boring’ task of preparing descriptive manuscripts concerning the substance of the archaeological record. While some of these have achieved the first goal, few have yet published details of their research. One or two even gained employment on the strength of their international publications – and good for them! Others had very good intentions but never got around to writing anything for publication while a few, having gained their Honours BA degrees after a year of anxiety, were simply not interested in what they perceived as prolonging the agony and subsequently sloped off into the hills of obscurity beyond academe. Whatever the reason, the result is that QAR, a journal designed as a vehicle for site reports and other more descriptive and substantive information, has become occasional rather than annual.I regard this matter of non-publication of substantive data, especially from theses, as a fairly serious issue in our discipline in Australia and cite several reasons why I regard it so. First, there is the problem of accessibility of theses. There was a time, some twenty or so years ago, when the archaeological community was so small and homogeneous that we had little trouble in keeping track of important Ph.D. and Honours BA research results. Furthermore, it was relatively easy and inexpensive to access the few theses being produced by our universities each year. It was simply a matter of contacting the authors and asking for a copy of their thesis, or at least permission to photocopy it. Today, this is no longer the case. As more and more theses are produced each year in line with the growth and diversification of our discipline, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep abreast of this new knowledge in the traditional way. Furthermore, as the years pass and individuals for various reasons drop out of the archaeological community, it becomes increasingly difficult to track them down.Second, while most of us realise that theses (and especially 4th-year BA theses) are usually far from perfect in terms of scholarship, organisation, and written expression, they often contain a considerable body of descriptive and quantitative information which is valuable for comparative research purposes. Unfortunately, journal editors normally want to publish general articles and do not accept a great deal of substantive data. Despite the sometimes highly touted interpretive conclusions of theses, when all is said and done, it is the descriptive information which forms the basis of such interpretations and it is this information which remains to be reinterpreted by future researchers. If it remains locked up in theses we as a community of scholars run the risk of missing out on valuable data. It is far better for the archaeological community that such information be published in a more accessible (and more scholarly) form.Thirdly, I raise a moral issue which was first brought to my attention many years ago while taking an introductory archaeology subject from Professor Jesse D. Jennings at the University of Utah. Jennings spent a considerable portion of one lecture to inform we incipient archaeologists of our obligations to the discipline. Of several points made, the one which particularly stuck in my mind was the obligation we have to the scientific community to present all our field and laboratory findings in a published form as soon as possible. Indeed, he was such a stickler on this point that before formal postgraduate degrees were awarded in archaeology, substantive material deriving from field-based thesis research had to be published. While not proposing that such a tough measure be taken in Australian universities, I do think that we should take appropriate steps to ensure that budding archaeologists (and some mature ones also) are reminded of this obligation to their discipline. The ways in which this can be accomplished are several and so obvious that I shall not take time to point them out here. Suffice it to say that, in my opinion, this obligation which has tended to be overlooked by many in the drive to publish in international journals, should be openly stressed more often.Turning now to this 10th anniversary volume, we celebrate the occasion by charging subscribers only $10 ($1 for each year of the series). This is made possible in part by a change to a new printing firm which has significantly reduced production costs and in part by the growth of a small surplus in our budget over the past few years. I also take this opportunity to heartily thank the members of the QAR Editorial Board and others who have been involved in the refereeing process and who have contributed in numerous other ways over the years.I end this piece with an invitation to all those with sites excavated but unpublished to send in your site reports, be they strictly Queensland-oriented or otherwise. I for my part pledge to attend to all submitted manuscripts without delay, so that they may be refereed and published as quickly as possible.Jay Hall – Editor

Objective: Production of a thesis during residency requires a great deal of dedication and effort. It is an honor to share the results of this effort with everyone when the thesis is published. In this study, we aimed to investigate the factors affecting the publication of a thesis in the field of urology. Methods: Theses completed between 2014 and 2018 were searched in the Institution of Higher Education Thesis Center. Keywords, title, and authors on the thesis were searched in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Journal tags were categorized according to whether they are indexed in Medline or not. Publication status was analyzed with the subject of the thesis, the year of thesis was completed, hospital where urology residents graduated, and the current workplace of the urologists. Results: Three hundred and fifty-three theses were analyzed in this study. The number of theses that were published in index journals and non-index journals was 65 (18.4) and 15 (4.2%), respectively. The median citation for published theses was 2 (0-21). The subject of the thesis, time passed after the thesis, and the current workplace of urologist was found to be statistically significant in the publication status of the theses (p<0.001, p= 0.02, p<0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Most of the theses produced by urologists were not published. Published theses received few citations. Theses produced from animal studies and a long period passed over the thesis increase the rate of publication. Urologists whose theses have been published mostly work in tertiary care hospitals.

Abstract. Robin Charles (Ignatius) Whatley was born a ‘Man of Kent’ in 1936. He was educated at Ashford Grammar School, where an inspiring teacher, Frank Kenworthy, stimulated a series of pupils to become earth scientists, for example, John Catt (University College London), Roy Clements (Leicester University), Ron Cook (recently Vice Chancellor of York University) and Chris Wilson (Open University). Following a varied post-school career as a farmer (1954), National Serviceman (1955–1957), and inshore fisherman based at Christchurch, Hampshire (1957–1959), Robin joined Hull University to read Geology. He graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in 1962, one of the first two ever to be awarded by the department. An interest in Micropalaeontology, in particular ostracods, became apparent during undergraduate years and formed part of his BSc dissertation. A further three years at Hull followed, funded by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR, fore-runner of the modern research councils), leading to the award of a PhD degree in 1966 for a thesis on British Callovian and Oxfordian ostracods, carried out under the supervision of John Neale. As a mature student Robin felt it to be his duty to write stern letters to DSIR pointing out the shortcomings of its procedures and officials, and he was somewhat surprised when, visiting DSIR for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship interview, he discovered that his letters were regularly pinned to the staff notice board to be read by all. As it turned out a Fellowship was not required, as Robin was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Geology . . .

This study explored the information literacy practices of undergraduate students conducting research for their Honors theses in their final year of study. Data was collected from 11 Honors students during several months through four rounds of open-ended, journal-style questionnaires and two rounds of interviews. Honors students’ sense of confidence varied throughout the thesis process, and several practices were identified that influenced students’ sense of self-efficacy. This study suggests that instruction librarians can help to increase students’ self-efficacy by modeling advanced research strategies, designing opportunities for students to practice challenging research tasks that build on previous skills, and addressing the affective and self-regulatory aspects of conducting higher-level research.

Medieval Studies at the University of Calgary is a field spread out over several faculties, specifically Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, and Communication and Culture. There is one multidisciplinary program that draws on courses offered by most of these faculties, a Minor in Medieval, Renaissance and Reformation Studies, with an anchor course in Humanities. Since students do not have to declare a Minor, enrolments are modest. There is no interdisciplinary M.A., but efforts are under way to fit such a program into a generic interdisciplinary M.A.. There are, however, significant opportunities for studying the medieval period and for writing an Honours, M.A. and (the odd) Ph.D. thesis within the traditional disciplines. Moreover, several graduates, especially from History and English, have pursued advanced degrees in Canada (Toronto), the U.S. (Notre Dame, Santa Barbara) and Britain (Oxford). Precisely because it is not a regular discipline, Medieval Studies has not been affected by systemic cutbacks. In addition to the specialists on hand, there have been recent appointments in this area in several departments, but that departmental presence and strength usually depends on just one person. Outside this structure, there is a flourishing Philology Research Group with an impressive range of activities. It was initiated by Ken Brown (French, Italian and Spanish Languages) four years ago and has been successful in attracting funding from the Faculty of Humanities, the university, and SSHRC. Its focus has been on textual editing, including text-encoding, palaeography, codicology and printing, with scholars from the U.S., Europe and Australia teaching workshops in their specialties. The Group has a community outreach program involving high school students, funded by the Delmas Foundation, and publishes its own series of occasional papers. Most recently, a beginning has been made in establishing a Medieval and Renaissance Cultural Studies Research Group with gender as its focus.

According to Plutarch, the Athenians honoured Alexander of Pherae with a bronze statute. It is difficult to explain such a high award with the ephemeral political cooperation between Pherae and Athens. The Author aims to show that the honour could have resulted from the involvement of the family of the Pheraean tyrants in maritime trade with Athens. To substantiate this thesis, the Author collects arguments showing the existence of trade relations between Pagasae and Pireus and the Pheraeans’ involvement in maritime trade.

One of the best opportunities that undergraduates have to learn to write like a scientist is to write a thesis after participating in faculty-mentored undergraduate research. But developing writing skills doesn't happen automatically, and there are significant challenges associated with offering writing courses and with individualized mentoring. We present a hybrid model in which students have the structural support of a course plus the personalized benefits of working one-on-one with faculty. To optimize these one-on-one interactions, the course uses BioTAP, the Biology Thesis Assessment Protocol, to structure engagement in scientific peer review. By assessing theses written by students who took this course and comparable students who did not, we found that our approach not only improved student writing but also helped faculty members across the department—not only those teaching the course—to work more effectively and efficiently with student writers. Students who enrolled in this course were more likely to earn highest honors than students who only worked one-on-one with faculty. Further, students in the course scored significantly better on all higher-order writing and critical-thinking skills assessed.

Robert Hanbury Brown was born on 31 August 1916 in Aruvankadu, Nilgiri Hills, South India; he was the son of an Officer in the Indian Army, Col. Basil Hanbury Brown, and of Joyce Blaker. From the age of 3 years Hanbury was educated in England, initially at a School in Bexhill and then from the ages of 8 to 14 years at the Cottesmore Preparatory School in Hove, Sussex. In 1930 he entered Tonbridge School as a Judde scholar in classics. Hanbury's interests turned to science and technology, particularly electrical engineering, and after two years he decided that he would seek more appropriate education in a technical college. His decision was accelerated by the fact that after the divorce of his parents his mother had married Jack Lloyd, a wealthy stockbroker, who in 1932 vanished with all his money and thus Hanbury felt he should seek a career that would lead to his financial independence. For these reasons Hanbury decided to take an engineering course at Brighton Technical College studying for an external degree in the University of London. At the age of 19 he graduated with a first-class honours BSc, taking advanced electrical engineering and telegraphy and telephony. He then obtained a grant from East Sussex and in 1935 joined the postgraduate department at the City & Guilds, Imperial College. In 1936 he obtained the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) for a thesis on oscillators He intended to continue his course for a PhD but a major turning point in his career occurred when he was interviewed during his first postgraduate year by Sir Henry Tizard FRS, Rector of Imperial College. Hanbury explained to Tizard that he was following up some original work by Van der Pol on oscillator circuits without inductance and hoped, ultimately, to combine an interest in radio with flying. In fact, Tizard had already challenged him about the amount of time he spent flying with the University of London Air Squadron. Tizard told Hanbury to see him again in a year's time and that he might then have a job for him. In fact, within three months Tizard accosted Hanbury and said he had an interesting research project in the Air Ministry for him. After an interview by R.A. (later Sir Robert) Watson-Watt (FRS 1941), Hanbury was offered a post at the Radio Research Board in Slough. His visit to Slough was brief; he was soon told to report to Bawdsey Manor in Suffolk, which he did on 15 August 1936. Thereby, unaware of what Tizard had in mind for him, Hanbury's career as one of the pioneers of radar began.

This study utilizes citation checking of advanced undergraduate research papers as a method for evaluating library collections at an institution with growing undergraduate and graduate research demands. A random sample of 101 honors thesis bibliographies from the period 1993–2002 was examined for format, discipline, and local availability rates. The proportion of journal citations in relation to books increased slightly over the period, but no other clear trends emerged. The incidence of Web citations began during the period but did not steadily increase. The study highlighted specific use patterns and collection weaknesses. Results serve as a baseline for further study of the library’s undergraduate user population; further citation studies are encouraged to assess continued use of online resources as the Internet and electronic technologies evolve.

Identifying student’s perception of research activity can provide important practical implications to effectively recommend and facilitate research opportunities for students. Through two surveys applied at the beginning and end of an undergraduate honors orientation class we conducted a qualitative and quantitative study to assess the students’ knowledge and perception of research. The survey questions were repeated in two different semesters, and students were taught research related content. Even though 48% of the students did not have any research experience and a minority (12%) had more than a year of research experience, a large portion of the students could explain many research related words, such as plagiarism, citations, google scholar, and primary source, but a few words could not be recognized by the students, such as predatory journal, preprint, ORCID and publons. The most frequent answers provided by students when asked about their perception of researcher skills included the word motivation, followed by creativity and communication. Students’ confidence in their knowledge and research-related skills increased over the semester consistent with other studies that show the value of a structured introduction to research for building student confidence.

Various personal dimensions of students—particularly motivation, self-efficacy beliefs, and epistemic beliefs—can change in response to teaching, affect student learning, and be conceptualized as learning dispositions. We propose that these learning dispositions serve as learning outcomes in their own right; that patterns of interrelationships among these specific learning dispositions are likely; and that differing constellations (or learning disposition profiles) may have meaningful implications for instructional practices. In this observational study, we examine changes in these learning dispositions in the context of six courses at four institutions designed to scaffold undergraduate thesis writing and promote students’ scientific reasoning in writing in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We explore the utility of cluster analysis for generating meaningful learning disposition profiles and building a more sophisticated understanding of students as complex, multidimensional learners. For example, while students’ self-efficacy beliefs about writing and science increased across capstone writing courses on average, there was considerable variability at the level of individual students. When responses on all of the personal dimensions were analyzed jointly using cluster analysis, several distinct and meaningful learning disposition profiles emerged. We explore these profiles in this work and discuss the implications of this framework for describing developmental trajectories of students’ scientific identities.

The projection method was first introduced by Chorin [Bull. AMS 73 (1967), pp. 928–931] and Temam [Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 33 (1969), pp. 377–385] as a computationally efficient numerical method to solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. Despite its success in decoupling the computations of velocity and pressure, it suffers from inaccurate numerical boundary layers. As an effort to resolve this inaccuracy, E and Liu [Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids 34 (2000), pp. 701–710] proposed the gauge method, which is a reformulation of the Navier–Stokes equations in terms of an auxiliary vector field and a gauge variable. This method utilizes the freedom of choosing a boundary condition for the gauge variable to reduce the numerical coupling between the considered variables. Nevertheless, the computational implementation of the boundary conditions for the auxiliary vector field is difficult in the context of finite elements since they involve either the normal or tangential derivative of the gauge variable. In order to circumvent this issue, we propose a weak formulation of the boundary conditions based on the symmetric Nitsche method. Computational results are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed method. References J. H. Bramble, J. E. Pasciak, and A. T. Vassilev. AbstractSocial scientists in disparate fields are now employing the construct of honour to ameliorate various social problems, such as immorality, failed states, international discord, poverty and mental illness. Moreover, historians of global religion cite Christianity's shift towards cultures shaped by the values of honour and shame. Despite this growing prominence of honour in social theories and the emergence of Christianity in honour–shame cultures, the notion of honour remains absent from theological discourse. In light of these global realities, we explore how God's active transformation of humanity from shame to honour can interpret both salvation-history and Christian theology. To this end I first explore the nature of humanity's problem of shame before God, using anthropological and biblical insights. Throughout the Old Testament, God's covenant initiatives with Abram, Moses and David, along with the common socio-literary pattern of God exalting a servant from unjust shame, reveals the dignified status God intends for humanity. God's programme to restore people from shame to honour climaxes in Jesus, who embodies honour in the incarnation, mediates dignity to the marginalised by healings and public fellowship, elaborates God's new code of honour which reinterprets social stigmas, and procures an exalted status for all peoples by atoning for shame and resurrecting to exaltation. Romans and 1 Peter are interpreted in their socio-historic contexts as apostolic instruments which expound the social implications of God's honour code. To unify the fractured Romans for the upcoming Spanish mission, Paul confronts social imperialism by replacing false honour claims with God's status now available by faith through grace in Christ. Meanwhile, 1 Peter assures maligned Christians of their exalted status and outlines honourable social relations. Then, in closing, we examine a soteriology of honour diachronically and systematically. In particular, how: biblical metaphors symbolise believers’ status transposition, group incorporation is key to New Testament soteriology, Eastern Orthodoxy's doctrine of theosis articulates the infusion of divine status, and other theological categories could be interpreted through honour-shame social values. These reflections towards an exegetical soteriology of divine honour are offered as an initial theological platform for addressing social issues where honour values prevail.

IUPAC is a global, scientific organization that contributes to the worldwide understanding of chemistry and the chemical sciences. It is certainly true that young chemists are shaping our science, and it is important for IUPAC to provide encouragement to our young colleagues. IUPAC accomplishes this goal through the IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists. This prestigious annual prize honors four to five chemists for important and outstanding research carried out during recent Ph.D. studies. The work is mainly judged on the basis of a 1000-word essay which is supported by recommendations from the senior scientist(s) with whom the candidate collaborated. As immediate Past President of IUPAC, I have had the pleasure of chairing an international prize selection committee of eminent chemists with a wide range of expertise in chemistry that adjudicated essays from 42 applicants from 16 countries. Reading these outstanding essays provided a wonderful overview of new trends in chemistry. Due to the large number of excellent candidates, it was not an easy task to pick the winners, but in the end the committee arrived at a unanimous decision and awarded the 2008 IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists to the following five chemists:- Emilie V. Banide, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, with a thesis entitled "From allenes to tetracenes: Syntheses, structures and reactivity of the intermediates"- Christopher Thomas Rodgers, University of Oxford, UK, with a thesis entitled "Magnetic field effects in chemical systems"- Akinori Saeki, Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, with a thesis entitled "Nanometer-scale dynamics of charges generated by radiations in condensed matter"- Andrea Rae Tao, University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA, with a thesis entitled "Nanocrystal assembly for bottom-up plasmonic materials"- Scott Warren, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, with a thesis entitled "Nanoparticle-block copolymer self-assembly"Each winner received a cash prize of USD 1000 and a trip to the 42nd IUPAC World Chemistry Congress, which will take place in Glascow, Scotland, 2-7 August, 2009. Here the winners will have the opportunity to present their work, which is an important stage of any research project. To reach an even wider audience, the prize winners were invited to submit manuscripts on aspects of their research for publication in Pure and Applied Chemistry (PAC). It is a pleasure to see that all five prize winners have taken advantage of this offer. The result is the five refereed papers which contain critical reviews of high quality and appear in this issue of PAC.Finally, it is an honor and a pleasure to congratulate each of the winners (and their supervisors) for winning the 2008 IUPAC Prize. It is IUPAC's hope that each of them has been encouraged to continue to do exciting research that will contribute to a bright future for the molecular-based sciences, which are so important for our common future.Bryan R. In this text the author reviews the life and work of Zagorka Micic, famous Serbian woman-philosopher, in honour of the 100th anniversary of her birth. She was one of the first students of Edmund Husserl, and her Ph. D. thesis was among the earliest ones in phaenomenology, which was waking in that time. Her cooperation with Husserl has continued for a decade. After the World War II Zagorka Micic worked as a professor of logic and history of philosophy at the University of Skoplje (now FYRM). Stressing her individual qualities, the paper is full of personal memories and reminiscences of mutual encounters.

For IUPAC, the global, scientific organization that cares about chemistry and the chemical sciences in all senses of the word, it is a duty, but also a pleasure to follow the development in chemical research with the aim of spotting pioneering work and new trends as early as possible. It is particularly rewarding to see how many young chemists contribute to shaping our science. For chemistry, it is therefore important to encourage our young colleagues in their work, and IUPAC does so through the IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists. This prestigious annual prize honors four to five chemists with a fresh Ph.D. for important and outstanding research carried out exceptionally well during their Ph.D. studies. The work is mainly judged on the basis of a 1000-word essay which is supported by recommendations from the senior scientist(s) with whom the candidate collaborated. As immediate Past President of IUPAC, I have had the pleasure of chairing an international prize selection committee of eminent chemists with a wide range of expertise in chemistry that adjudicated essays from 57 applicants from 24 countries. This citation analysis assesses use of print and electronic resources in advanced undergraduate research at Wellesley College. Using four years of social science honors theses bibliographies, the proportionate use of electronic versus print sources is determined. Consistent discipline-based patterns in resource use are identified to inform future instruction and digital collections policies. Findings reveal: (1) an explosion in use of nonperiodical, nonbook Web sources; (2) a rapid decline in the use of print journals; and (3) a persistent lack of use of e-books. The authors argue that greater emphasis on starting research with scholarly indexes and bibliographies is a fruitful corrective to recent overdependence on random Web searching and will also better ground students in solid research practices as transitions in the scholarly publishing world continue.

Nicholas Wolterstorff has recently defended the acceptability of the belief that God speaks and examined various implications of such a belief. This paper examines several of his major hermeneutical and epistemological thesis. Among the issues discussed are the following (i) I examine Wolterstorff's claim to ‘honour’ the results of biblical criticism, and argue that excavative biblical scholarship challenges the plausibility of various crucial assumptions necessary for believing authorial-discourse interpretation of the Bible to be possible. (ii) I dispute his peculiar view that God's speech should not be included under the rubric of divine revelation. (iii) Contrary to Wolterstorff I claim that miracles would have to play an essential role in divine discourse. (iv) I critically examine and reject his claim that – in the case he describes – ‘we are entitled’ to believe God is speaking.

During the nineteen eighties numerous meaningful booklets were published by Christian groups on social analysis and against an apartheid society. Less known, but extremely powerful, four black Dutch Reformed theologians wrote similar sophisticated doctorate theses. This article delineates the gist of these messages to honour Takatso Mofokeng. The urgent question is also whether these alarming analyses and bone-cutting witnesses would be relevant for the contemporary situation regarding the horrific violence, un-arrested poverty, unemployment, rampant ‘official’ theft and crime. The outcome is that this type of hermeneutics keeps the dream of freedom alive and rekindles hope towards renewal.

The authors describe the life and activity of a famous scientist and qualified Russian surgeon, a great man with distinguished leadership ability in medicine and higher medical education, Professor Vsevolod Ivanovich Astafyev. As a student, Vsevolod I. Astafyev was keen about emergency surgery, and worked a lot in experimental laboratory. He graduated from the Kursk medical institute with honors, completing by the time his PhD thesis. However, he gave up postgraduate study and began working as a surgeon in a district hospital. After returning to the Kursk medical institute, Vsevolod I. Astafyev worked as an assistant at the hospital surgery department and successfully defended his PhD thesis. At the age of 35, he defended his doctorate thesis and competed for a post of the head of hospital surgery department at the Irkutsk medical institute. He had continued to be actively engaged in science, pedagogy and practical surgery, and organized the Siberian branch of the All-Soviet Union Scientific Center of Surgery of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. The branch had a clinical base with 220 beds at the Irkutsk regional hospital. Vsevolod I. Astafyev created a school of polyvalent surgeons, lecturers, and scholars. In 1987, Vsevolod Astafyev accepted an offer to become the deputy head doctor of the Republican hospital of Yakutia. Shortly after coming to Yakutsk city, he was elected a deputy of the supreme council of the Yakut Republic. On his initiative, supported by the Republic’s governance, a modern equipped medical center was built and put into operation within a short time. The so-called “sanctuary of science” still successfully works as one of the leading clinics of Russia and abroad.

The Silence of the Lambs, a suspense novel written by Thomas Harris in 1999, tells a story about a clever and courageous FBI agent, Clarice Starling, who overcomes difficulties caused by sexism and wins herself a reputation and honor by investigating a serial murder case. Since the novel was published, discussions about the plot and characters have never stopped. Nevertheless, research related to the protagonist Clarice Starling based on existentialist feminism are rare. This thesis takes Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism and the concept of “the other” to analyze gender inequalities encountered by Clarice Starling and her resistance against the patriarchal society. Therefore, combined with most women’s current living situation that gender inequality remains widespread, hindering their advance at work and in daily life, this thesis concludes that women should establish the subjective consciousness, prove their self-worth as females and avoid being “the other” through efforts.

Henry David Thoreau's influential essay “Civil Disobedience,” published in 1849, began with a ringing declaration of opposition to government: “I heartily accept the motto, ‘That government is best which governs least’; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe—‘That government is best which governs not at all.’…the character of the American people has done all that has been accomplished; and it would have done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got in its way.” Thoreau's statement summarizes a central thesis in political theory, what has become a historical constant in the minds of researchers seeking to explain the development and parameters of the American welfare state. This thesis is that any power given to the government is subtracted from the liberty of the governed, a concept best captured by the term “antistatism.” Thus, Lipset contends that the United States is dominated by an encompassing liberal culture that honors private property, distrusts state authority, and holds individual rights sacred. Similarly, according to Huntington, Americans live by a creed that views government as the most dangerous embodiment of power. For Morone, American government is a “polity suspicious of its own state.” Hartz, too, asserts that the master assumption is that “the power of the state must be limited.”

Abstract. The Second German Antarctic Expedition (1911–1912) did not have a good start, because Wilhelm Filchner (1877–1957) failed to secure his position as expedition leader. His problems began long before the expedition set sail: he had the support neither of the scientists and officers on board nor of the scientific community in Germany. The enforced choice of the captain, who suffered from syphilis, brought the expedition to the brink of collapsing. In addition, the rivalry between the groups on board the Deutschland, and the usual challenging circumstances any expedition confronts in these regions, led to mutiny at the end of their time in Grytviken, South Georgia. Upon the expedition's return to Germany, “courts of honour” took place to adjudicate on the mutual accusations. This article reviews some of the reasons why this expedition was disaster-prone. The article is based on research from my PhD thesis (Rack, 2010).

Most studies of presidential power assume that legitimacy is derived from the Constitution. This essay argues that presidents can become authors of their own legitimacy, whether understood in normative or behavioral terms. Specifically, the thesis is that presidential assertions of power, cloaked in an antipower rhetoric which formally honors the dominant values of the culture, have created an American state that has served as an extraconstitutional source of presidential legitimacy. It is widely believed that American constitutionalism undermined the state by destroying sovereignty. Lincoln's interpretation and use of the war power, however, denned a supreme national authority located in the presidency. In addition, his Gettysburg Address provided a paradigmatic metaphor for concealing presidential power rhetorically. Subsequent presidents have taken advantage of both effects by attempting to assert power as revolutionary principle. Linguistically, these concealments are reflected in tropes which constitute legitimizing defenses for exercise of extraordinary power.
