The author is Associate Professor, School of Social and Cultural Studies, University of Western Australia. He gained a Geography Honours degree and MA in Applied Geography at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, and a Ph. D at the University of British Columbia. He has taught at the University of Western Australia since then, apart from 1991-1993 when he was Professor of Australian Studies at the University of Tokyo attached to the Department of International Relations at Komaba. He has published widely in various areas of political geography, including electoral geography, local government, federalism and more recently geopolitics. His most recent book, is The Geopolitics of Australia's Regional Relations (Dordrecht, Kluwer, 1999, reprinted 2001). His current research projects are in the areas of water security, Australia's "arc of instability," regionalism and Australia-Asia relations. He is a full member of the IGU Commission on the World Political Map and English-language editor of Chiri, the Japanese journal of human geography. He will be Visiting Professor at the University of Kyoto during 2003.

On March 27, 1990 the outstanding Slovak geomorphologist and physical geographer Prof. Dr. Emil Mazúr, DrSc., Member of the Czechoslovak and Slovak Academies of Sciences, died at the age of 65 years. For many years he was a member of the Presidium of both the Academies, Director of the Institute of Geography of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava and President of the National Geographical Committee. He held many important scientific functions. Emil Mazúr is the author of more than 150 scientific publications. He had merit in the publication of the National Atlas of Slovakia and was interested especially in regional geomorphology as well as in landscape ecology. He was one of our foremost geographers well known for his creative achievements in the field of science. Emil Mazúr was a holder of many decorations and honours at home and abroad for the tremendous tasks that he had accomplished. We want to express our gratitude also for the deeply human understanding that he had shown for those working under him.

AbstractThis is the second in a series of biographies entitled ‘Children of the Golden Age,’ the purpose of which is to describe the background and contributions of significant living figures in polar research who began their scientific careers in the years following World War II. Born on 17 November 1926 in Burma, Charles Winthrop Molesworth Swithinbank attended Bryanston School in Dorset before joining the Royal Navy in 1944. He read geography at the University of Oxford and was named assistant glaciologist for the Norwegian-British-Swedish Expedition (1949–52). After completing his DPhil, he joined the Scott Polar Research Institute, where he studied ice distribution in the Northwest Passage. Moving to the University of Michigan (1959–63), he led three expeditions to the Ross Ice Shelf before becoming the first British exchange scientist with the Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1963–65). Returning to the Scott Polar Research Institute, he developed a glaciological programme that led to his appointment as chief glaciologist of the British Antarctic Survey. He became head of the Earth Sciences Division in 1974, a post he held until his retirement in 1986. Swithinbank's contributions to Antarctic science include studies of the deformation, flow, and thickness of glaciers and the interpretation of satellite imagery. He served as president of the International Glaciological Society (1981–84) and has received a number of honours and awards.

It is indeed a privilege for me to join Dr Naved Hamid in paying tribute to Dr Parvez Hasan, an outstanding economist recognised for his work on development economics, on the economy of Pakistan, and the East Asian economies. The Pakistan Society of Development Economists honours him today for his contribution to. economics, to the development of the Pakistan economy and to the economic profession in Pakistan. Dr Naved Hamid has recalled Dr Parvez Hasan illustrious career. In my tribute to Dr Parvez Hasan I want to put his life and career in the broader context of the times he lived in and the important institutions in which he served and their development to which he contributed. To me the life of Dr Parvez Hasan, as so wonderfully captured in his recently published autobiography, "My Life My Country-Memoirs of a Pakistani Economist", is a story which covers not only the creation and early years of Pakistan's independence but is the story of its nascent years and the rise of the profession of economists in Pakistan. It is also the story of three remarkable economists, whose lives and careers were closely intertwined and of three great institutions which were to playa pioneering role in the economic development of Pakistan as well as in laying the foundation of serious analytical and applied research on emerging economic issues confronting the country.

In this study, we developed a workflow that applies a complex groundwater model for purpose-driven groundwater monitoring network design and uses linear uncertainty analysis to explore the predictive dependencies and provide insights into the veracity of the monitoring design. A numerical groundwater flow model was used in a probabilistic modelling framework for obtaining the spatial distribution of predicted drawdown for a wide range of plausible combination of uncertain parameters pertaining to the deep sedimentary basin and groundwater flow processes. Reduced rank spatial prediction was used to characterize dominant trends in these spatial drawdown patterns using empirical orthogonal functions (EOF). A differential evolution algorithm was used to identify optimal locations for multi-level piezometers for collecting groundwater pressure data to minimize predictive uncertainty in groundwater drawdown. Data-worth analysis helps to explore the veracity of the design by using only the sensitivities of the observations to predictions independent of the absolute values of predictions. A 10-bore monitoring network that collects drawdown data from multiple depths at each location was designed. The data-worth analysis revealed that the design honours sensitivities of the predictions of interest to parameters. The designed network provided relatively high data-worth for minimizing uncertainty in the drawdown prediction at locations of interest.

Jerome E. Dobson, professor emeritus, University of Kansas; president of the American Geographical Society; and recipient of the 2014 James R. Anderson Medal of Honor in Applied Geography, discusses his career in the context of America's academic purge of geography. Highlights include his time as a Jefferson Science Fellow with the National Academies and U. S. Department of State. Dobson has been recognized with two lifetime achievement awards for his pioneering work in geographic information systems (GIS) and as Alumnus of 2013 at Reinhardt University. His contributions include the paradigm of automated geography, his instrumental role in originating the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, and his leadership of the LandScan Global Population Database, the de facto world standard for estimating populations at risk. His recent research includes testing a new system for mapping minefields; designing and promulgating the current world standard for cartographic representation of landmines, minefields, and mine actions; and leading six AGS Bowman Expeditions.

“Civilized City” is the highest honor in China’s urban evaluation system. This research used a quasi-natural experiment approach to evaluate how the “Civilized City” designation influence tourism economic growth. The results showed that: (1) “Civilized City” selection promotes the growth of the tourism economy, and its impact on tourism income is greater than on the number of tourists. The “Civilized City” award is more conducive to the growth of the tourism economy than other city honors; (2) the “Civilized City” honor promotes institutional supply and adjusts the allocation of capital and labor, thereby promoting the growth of the tourism economy; and (3) the analysis showed that the impact of the “Civilized City” honor on a city’s tourism economy varies according to region, administrative level, and population size. The results of this research provide empirical support that city honors boost tourism economy growth and yield new evidence for cities to promote tourism development through awards and accreditations.

Da geografia à astronomia, geologia, antropologia, botânica, mineralogia, zoologia e entomologia, da literatura de viagens à religião e biografias de sábios, de tudo encontramos nas Palestras Radiofónicas, nos Cadernos de Divulgação Cultural e nas biografias que escreve sobre os que dedicaram a vida à investigação e à Ciência. Partindo do conhecimento e da investigação científica, evolui para a divulgação do conhecimento de forma interactiva, colocando as diferentes áreas do saber em conexão, demonstrando que nada, neste mundo, funciona ou existe por si só. After his graduation with honours and summa cum laude PhD, he produced a multi-volume work recognized as one of the most significant academic achievements of spreading knowledge in Portugal to those who couldn’t afford education or culture. In particular, we’ll discuss Da Silva’s contribution to the dissemination of scientific knowledge by means of a radio program, together with a collection of booklets ranging from geography to geology, anthropology, botany, mineralogy, zoology and entomology, from travel literature and religion to biographies of men and women who dedicated their lives to science investigation. From scientific information to research results, Da Silva evolves to the notion of interactive knowledge. In fact, he gives evidence that all knowledge fields are connected. That’s the starting point for our reflection: how can this educational paradigm affect today’s way of encouraging scientific studies? That setting is important to most novels is self-evident, yet this is particularly true of pastoral literature. Pastoral, a popular mode of writing that underwent renewal in the Renaissance, relies on the setting of Arcadia. An idyllic golden age where shepherds contemplate love, Arcadia is intrinsic to the pastoral’s identity. However, the pastoral landscape is renewed and reconsidered in Honoré d’Urfé’s monumental Astrée (1607–27). The author relocates the pastoral setting from ancient Greece to fifth-century France and the region of Forez. Because this was a popular mode at the time, the change of setting drew the reader’s attention to the authorial choice. In the novel, the author distinguishes his work from tradition by relying upon geographic specificity and the motif of the voyage to establish a foundation myth for France. Moreover, the importance of setting raises questions of the nature of the landscape and considerations of the utopistic ramifications for the pastoral mode as d’Urfé conceives it.

Cultic and other honors offered to rulers by their subjects unambiguously express loyalty to the rulers. Based on data collected for the Seleukid and Ptolemaic empires, a comparison is offered emphasizing the particular qualities of the Seleukid record. The comparison considers geographic distribution, where the honors fell on a public to private spectrum, the occupations and ethnicities of the subjects who offered honors individually, the intensity of these practices, and changes in the patterns over time. We know in advance that honors for the rulers are weakly attested for the Seleukid east, and even in Koile Syria and Phoinike. Should this reticence be interpreted as a possible indication of tepid support for Seleukid rule in these regions? Alternative explanations or contributing factors include preexisting cultural habits, different royal policies, destruction of evidence by wars and natural disasters, and the unevenness of archaeological exploration.

RESUMO:O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a trajetória da professora Aracy Losano Fontes e suas principais contribuições à Geografia do Estado de Sergipe. Para tal, foram realizados levantamentos bibliográficos na base de dados do CNPq/CAPES e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geografia da Universidade Federal de Sergipe. Foi também mantido contato com ex-orientandos para depoimentos e obtenção de dados sobre a homenageada e realizada uma entrevista informal com a professora para resgatar a memória não registrada, confirmando alguns dados e informações previamente coletados. Licenciada em Graduada em Geografia e com Bacharelado pela Universidade Federal de Sergipe, impulsionou sua formação acadêmica realizando o Mestrado em Geomorfologia pela Universidade Federal da Bahia, e o Doutorado em Geografia pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP - Rio Claro. O nome Aracy Losano Fontes guarda um conteúdo e uma história de vida rica em vários contextos. No âmbito familiar, a esposa, a mãe, avó e a bisavó, e no fazer acadêmico e profissional, a professora, a geomorfóloga, a geógrafa, a pesquisadora, a consultora e a orientadora. Todos esses papéis estão ancorados em um ser humano digno e generoso, e na geógrafa brilhante. Com muito mérito, a Dra. The name Aracy Losano Fontes saves a rich content and life story in many contexts. In the family sphere, the wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and in the academic and professional, the teacher, the geomorphologist, the geographer, the researcher, the consultant and the counselor. All these roles are anchored in a dignified and generous human being, and the brilliant geographer. Embracing an "untraditional" medium, young people contest settler violence and hegemonies of shame by expressing unique, politicized possibilities of being Indigenous, or what I am calling (ab)originality: a style of being first, fresh, and foremost. Heritage is an act of reverent rebellion: an individual honors continuity, but defies the trappings of tradition, which shackle Indigeneity to the geography and the customs of the past. Through love and creativity, artists claim visibility, voice, and everywhere.

Анотація:

This study aims to develop the design of geography learning materials containing Indonesian geopolitics as a systemic program to strengthen national character in the Department of Geography Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, State University of Medan. The specific target to be achieved is the production of textbooks on geography learning materials containing Indonesian geopolitics. The research method used is the R&D method by following the Borg & Gall procedure. The research subjects involved: lecturers in Political Geography courses; students as subjects for a limited group trial; and five experts for the validation of teaching materials. The instruments used were expert validation questionnaires, learning outcomes tests and observation sheets, which were analyzed using: qualitative descriptive analysis to analyze information about various field conditions; quantitative descriptive analysis used to analyze the scores given by the expert; and statistical analysis assisted by STATCAL software. The results showed that the textbooks developed were valid and suitable for learning Political Geography, as well as contributing to the systemic program of strengthening national character in campus life by placing six pillars of character, namely: citizenship, justice, honor, responsibility, caring, and being able to trust.

Promises of land allotments that the Crown made to Métis children in 1870 were fulfilled for some eligible children and partially fulfilled for others. This led to the Manitoba Métis Federation and seventeen individuals initiating action against the federal Crown, claiming that the Crown had breached a fiduciary obligation to the Métis and had failed to uphold the honour of the Crown by not executing its obligation diligently, which, in turn, had caused injury to a number of the children. At trial, upheld on appeal, the case was dismissed. The fiduciary obligation was deemed not to exist, the honour of the Crown had not been breached, and the action was barred by both statutes of limitations and the doctrine of laches. Overturning the decision, the Supreme Court of Canada, however, held that the honour of the Crown had been breached and statutes of limitations and the doctrine of laches did not apply. The case contributes to Canadian jurisprudence regarding the honour of the Crown in Aboriginal land matters. It is also of interest in international land administration and land restitution, given the current high incidence of grabbing of customary/Aboriginal land in many countries.

Ladies and gentlemen, and friends, Asslam o alaeekum! It is really a joy and an honour to be here at the PIDE Conference and also to be able to speak in the lecture that carries the name of Mahbub Ul Haq. I was honoured to do the doctoral fieldwork affiliated with the Human Development Centre (HDC) in Islamabad. I did my D.Phil fieldwork in 1996 and 1997 and of course then participated in the activities of the HDC at that time. It was really the vision of Mahbub Ul Haq, his eloquence, passion and commitment to the work, which gives one a sense of gravity and a sense of potential importance of gathering communities of people to debate issues about which we perhaps do not agree but which are so important to the society. I hold that memory very much in the mind. What I would to do today is to speak a little bit about multidimensional poverty not as an end in itself but, as we have heard in all of the presentations in this Conference, as the reason to address poverty, inequality, or inclusive growth to use the tools of our trade as agents of change. I begin with the quote from John Dreze and Amartya Sen that positive change have often occurred and yielded some liberation when the remedy of ailments has been sought actively and with vigour. I think one of the distinguishing features of the academic conferences it that we get space and time to really try to crystallise some of the issues that lies at the heart of these topics.

AbstractWhen conflicts over land arise in the region of Dori, in northern Burkina Faso, bribery of officials through ‘brokers’ is common. However, farmers often pay more in bribes than the land at issue is worth. ‘It's a question of honour’ people say. Disputes are arbitrated by competing state institutions. ‘Brokers’ monopolise and manipulate access to the institutions and largely control the legal outcome. People do not expect protection from the state but rely on their honour in countering adversaries. When the only defence of property is the owner's honour, and not the state, the price of infringement must be set high as a deterrent. The land in question may not be important, but any usurpation of it is an attack on the honour and hence on the whole property of the aggrieved party. To let one field go is to invite invasion of the rest. Competition for access to land between farmers is matched and complicated at a higher level by competition for jurisdiction between the various political and legal authorities.

AbstractThis article takes issue with ahistorical typologies that depict all slaves as ‘dishonoured’ persons. It demonstrates that royal slaves in Kano emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate were initially valuable to the elite because they were indeed dishonoured outsiders. But, over time, slaves tried to limit their exploitation by developing their own systems of honour and status. The article traces when, where and how royal slaves in Kano acquired and attempted to acquire ‘honour’ as officials, kin and members of a broader social world. However, it concludes that, although slaves did indeed develop systems of honour, their ability to acquire an honourable identity was nonetheless limited by their status as slaves, which they remained despite their power and position.

Ulrich Beck’s cosmopolitan sociology affords a much-needed rethinking of the transnational politics of climate change, not least in pointing to an emerging inter-urban geography of world cities as a potential new source of community, change and solidarity. This short essay, written in honour of Beck’s forward-looking agenda for a post-Euro-centric social science, outlines the contours of such an urban-cosmopolitan ‘realpolitik’ of climate risks, as this is presently unfolding across East Asian world cities. Much more than a theory-building endeavour, the essay suggests, Beck’s sociology provides a standing invitation for further transnational dialogue and collaborative empirical work, in East Asia and beyond, on what are, arguably, the defining challenges for the 21st century world of global risks.
