The objective of this research is to study, among athletes, determinants of attitudes towards homosexuality. With respect to levels of Doise, it is expected the proposal of a predictive model of the determinants at different levels: intrapersonal, interpersonal, positional and ideological. The work consists of 4 components: 1) a preliminary study of 322 people for the validation of a tool for measuring attitudes toward gays and lesbians, 2) a survey of 1002 athletes analyzing the determinants of attitudes toward homosexuals, distinguishing men's sports and women's sports, 3) a study on the discovery social norms towards homosexuality in sport, 4) a survey of 572 football players offering a predictive model of attitudes toward gays and lesbians, including the role of the trainer and group processes.Overall, the results indicate a clear difference between women and men athletes in the acceptance of homosexuality. Normativity is the main predictor of attitudes, tending towards a greater acceptance among women and preservation of heterosexism in men. Thus, in the masculine sport, homosexuality appears unprotected stigma directly related to group dynamics. In addition, heterosexism is closely related to sexism, racism and religion. In this sense, it seems important to develop awareness and training with athletes and coaches. These actions may be carried out under the general terms of the management of diversity in sport

Abstract The objective of the present study is to analyze the impact of audiovisual fiction on attitudes towards gay people within the specific Serbian culture. Particularly, this study observes the processes explaining attitude change towards homosexuality through a positive representation of gay men depicted in the film The Parade (2011). The study was based on a sample of 200 college students (M = 21.64, SD = 2.27). We applied a quasi-experimental research design and divided all participants into two groups: an experimental group (N=150), and a control group (N=50). There were two phases of data collection separated by 30 days. Firstly, we collected data in the pre-test: All the participants filled in a questionnaire consisted of socio-demographic information and the instrument H25 measuring homophobia. One month later, we performed a second data collection. In this phase, the experimental group and the control group differed in some of the tasks they were asked to complete. The experimental group watched the film, and after the exposure, filled in a questionnaire measuring homophobia, identification with the character, intergroup contact and the third person effect. On the other hand, the control group did not watch the film, and once again filled in a questionnaire measuring homophobia. We applied quantitative method in order to identify subjacent relations between the variables, and to determine magnitudes of their effects. Main results reveal that experimental group, compared with a control group, showed more favorable attitude towards gay people. Results also found that men expressed higher level of homophobia than women. Identification with character was positively associated with acceptance of homosexuality. We also obtained positive correlation between the identification and intergroup contact. Religiosity and the third person effect were negatively associated with homophobia score. The less identification with the character the participants achieved, the higher level of religiosity, and the third person effect they expressed. In conclusion, the study makes a general contribution by reinforcing the results of previous media effect related studies, and finds their relevance within the

This dissertation describes the experience of being gay and out at school for seven male students aged sixteen to eighteen. Data was collected through multiple semistructured interviews with participants recruited through the various urban, suburban, and alternative high schools they attended at the time of this study.
Data was analyzed using a modification of the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method of analyzing phenomenological data (Moustakas, 1994). The theoretical framework undergirding this study is phenomenological research, arts-based research, and queer theory in education. Findings are represented as a literary novel in order to better preserve participants' voices.
Data analysis indicates that the experience of being out in high school is characterized by: (a) managing "the secret" of being gay before and during coming out; (b) seeing being gay as just being yourself; (c) perceiving the school as privately supportive, but publicly indifferent to gay students; (d) emotionally reflecting the school environment; (e) valuing relationships as a positive; (f) seeing harassment, gossip, and gender differences as negatives; (g) ascribing to perpetrators of homophobia and harassment character flaws and anachronistic beliefs; (h) being left on your own to deal with homophobia and harassment as others abdicate their responsibilities; (i) employing escapist, self-protection, and resistance strategies to deal with homophobia and harassment; (j) searching for connectivity to other gays and the LGBT community; (k) facing the silence of information and resources in schools on LGBT issues and people; and (l) advising others to be true to themselves.
This research has implications for teachers, administrators, policy-makers, and those involved in teacher education programmes who are interested in addressing the needs of gay students.

Sexual minority men are at an increased risk for negative outcomes, including mental health disorders, suicide, substance abuse, and sexual risk behaviors. Internalized Homophobia (IH), roughly defined as sexual orientation-related self-hatred among gay men, has been linked to these outcomes. Since its publication in 1983, the predominant measure of IH used in psychological research has been the Nungesser Homosexual Attitudes Inventory (Nungesser, 1983). The scale is potentially dated, and there is a relative paucity of investigation into its psychometric properties; findings derived through its use may be in question. The current effort describes two studies designed to address these concerns. Study I includes a principal components analysis of the scale using data obtained from an internet sample (N = 486), resulting in suggested revisions for the broader scale, and proposed brief versions of the Self and Disclosure subscales. Study II used data obtained from a second internet sample (N = 884) to further evaluate scale structure and properties. Analyses include confirmatory factor analyses of the original scale, Shidlo's revised version (1994), the suggested alternative, and the Brief Self and Disclosure scales proposed in Study I. Of the three versions of the overall scale, the suggested alternative proposed in Study I exhibited the most favorable fit and highest item loadings. Internal consistency for the suggested alternative was equal to that of the larger NHAI and Shidlo-revised scales. External validity was evaluated through correlations with mental health and suicide, substance use, sexual risk, and orientation-based victimization. Strong results in the expected direction were found only in the instance of mental health, with negative attitudes towards homosexuality being associated with increases in depression and anxiety scores as measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The suggested scale alternative and Brief Self and Disclosure scales performed similarly to the more extensive NHAI and Shidlo-revised scales, leading to a recommendation for their use in research. Finally, findings from the current effort are discussed in relation to the broader social context impacting the lives and development of sexual minority men.

This thesis has been written in partial fulfillment of the requirements of a masters programme in intercultural communication. The study focuses on aspects of linguistic communication, specifically in media discourse, where “cultural boundaries” are determined by sexual difference and where much misunderstanding appears to be founded in different conceptions of homosexuality. I have investigated the theoretical frameworks within which discursive reflection on homosexuality can be studied from an interdisciplinary perspective. The research examines reports in a student newspaper that topicalise homosexuality; it also considers reports that are part of a discourse in which communication takes place between a heterosexual majority and a homosexual minority. Reports that were published across a period of five years were examined, in order to determine whether there has been any development in the discourse. This investigation of a particular kind of intercultural media discourse has been augmented by investigating attitudes towards the minority group by means of a questionnaire, designed by Kite and Deaux (1986: 137). This questionnaire was distributed among 240 students in an attempt to determine whether their reported attitudes coincide with those reported in the media. Despite the fact that homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) more than 30 years ago, reports of homophobic violence and attitudes in news media reveal that a significant percentage of the population still views homosexuality as an illness, a psychological disorder or as sin. The aim of this thesis was to examine the possible (re)enforcement of such homophobic ideologies in news media, as well as the possible (re)enforcement of increasingly tolerant ideologies, by making use of frameworks developed within Critical Discourse Analysis, by van Dijk (1998) and Gelber (2002). While the results of the media analysis indicate a growing acceptance of homosexuality, the survey results reveal that the majority of the heterosexual students surveyed still maintain homophobic attitudes. Furthermore, discrepancies in the survey results reveal the complex nature of such attitudes.
Robertson, Veronica L. "Homosexuality : the disclosure process during adolescence." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/17954.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: During no other time in history have sexual minority individuals been the recipients of so much attention, scrutiny and unprecedented acceptance and inclusion into mainstream culture. However, despite advances and society's ever increasing tolerance toward sexual minorities, many individuals with alternative sexual orientations remain fearful of disclosing their sexuality. Consequently, adolescents often hide their alternative sexual orientation from others or disclose to only a select few. Adolescents with alternative sexual orientations face unique challenges, such as the coming out process, during which they must recognise, explore, define and disclose their orientation in a way that heterosexual individuals need not. Disclosure of an alternative sexual orientation is a struggle for most lesbian, gay and bisexual youth due to fears of discrimination, ostracism and violence from others. Despite a growing body of scientific literature on homosexuality in general, little is known about the disclosure process and its impact on an adolescent. This study seeks to help fill the gaps by giving voice to the adolescent by exploring the experience of disclosure. Furthermore, this study seeks to provide insight and knowledge to mental health professionals to aid adolescent clients throughout the disclosure process. This study's research methodology can be described as qualitative research which is embedded within an interpretive/constructivist paradigm. Purposive sampling was used to select five male and five female research participants. The methods of data collection that were employed comprised semi-structured individual interviews and reflective notes. Furthermore, content analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings of this study suggest that many unique issues besides the normative challenges that lesbian and gay adolescents share with heterosexual adolescents characterise their development. This research study suggests that there are several milestones that are characteristic of lesbian and gay identity development, the negotiation of which may hinder development in other areas. The male and female participants described a similar trajectory to coming out, consistently identifying a feeling of being different during early childhood which resolved into an awareness of same-sex attraction that concluded in their self-labelling as gay or lesbian. The findings of this study suggest that the process of disclosure is continuous and emergent. The reactions of parents ranged from extreme outrage and expulsion from the home to support and acceptance of the fact that their child had disclosed his/her homosexual orientation. From the findings of this study it would appear that the participants' parents were initially ill prepared and unable to support their child during his/her disclosure. The participants voiced various strategies to support an adolescent in the position of disclosing to family. There are several implications of this study's findings for mental health professionals working with lesbian, gay and bisexual adolescents and youth.

This study seeks to explore the determinants of such attitudes and explore the life contexts of students’ processes by which they came to hold such attitudes through a qualitative interview approach. The eight themes that emerged from the interviews reflect participants’ own voices and their worldviews about LGBT people. These themes inform a framework of general recommendations for student affairs programming efforts to reduce homophobia and resistance to LGBT people and lifestyles throughout campus.

The present study was conducted in the context of human sexuality, in particular in its non-normative expressions and its objectives were to analyze the beliefs associated with the nature of homosexuality and lesbian and gay attitudes in the various dimensions presented by the sample, to analyze associations between the variables that constitute the beliefs associated with the nature of homosexuality as well as attitudes towards lesbians and gays, and to analyze the relationships between sociodemographic variables (age, gender and sexual orientation) with the subscales related to the beliefs associated with the nature of homosexuality and with the relative subscales attitudes towards lesbians and gays. The present investigation was carried out with a sample of 111 Portuguese individuals (92 women and 19 men), aged between 18 and 59 years. For this, a sociodemographic questionnaire was used in online mode and two scales were used to evaluate beliefs and attitudes towards homosexuality: the Beliefs Scale about the Nature of Homosexuality (Pereira, Monteiro & Camino, 2009b) and the Multidimensional Face Attitude Scale the Lesbians and Gays (Gato, Fontaine & Carneiro, 2014) also filled sequentially online. In Portugal there are already some studies concerning the type of beliefs about the nature of homosexuality in the face of prejudice, however, with regard to the scope of attitudes towards lesbians and gays, there are not many studies in Portugal that emphasize the possible association of type of beliefs about the nature of homosexuality with these same attitudes. The results suggest that gender, age and sexual orientation are related to the expression of prejudice towards lesbians and gays. They also demonstrate that participants with greater adherence to ethical-moral and biological beliefs express more homophobic attitudes. The participants with the highest adherence to belief about homosexuality based on cultural evidence are those with less homophobic attitudes. The way we think about the nature of a particular phenomenon - Homosexuality - determines, in a variable way, the type of behavior that we are going to assume before this same phenomenon.

Introduction Access to effective health care is at the heart of the discourse on how to achieve the health related Millennium Development Goals. Lesbian and gay persons are affected by a range of social and structural factors in their environment, and as a result have unique health needs that might not be met by existing health care services. Sexual stigma remains a barrier to seeking appropriate health care. Lesbians and gays might delay seeking health care when needed or avoid it all together, because of past discrimination or perceived homophobia within the health care system. Aim of the study The aim of the study was explore and describe the accessibility of primary health care services to lesbians and gays in Umlazi in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Methodology A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study was conducted which was contextual in nature. Aday and Andersons’ theoretical framework of access was chosen to guide this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 lesbian and gay participants. The findings of this study were analysed using content analysis. Results Four major themes that emerged from the data analysis were discrimination of homosexual men and women by health care providers and community members in PHC facilities; attitudes of homosexual men and women towards health care providers; homophobic behaviour and equality of PHC services. Few participants were satisfied with the primary health care services they received. Intervention by the Department of Health, Department of Education, curriculum planners and Health Professionals Councils is recommended wherein homosexuality education should be addressed during pre-service and in-service education sessions so as to familiarise health care providers with such clients’ health care needs and to decreased homophobic attitudes.
