This paper presents an exploratory research project that investigates data practices in digital history research. Emerging from the 1950s and ‘60s in the United States, digital history remains a charged topic among historians, requiring a new research paradigm that includes new concepts and methodologies, an intensive degree of interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, and international collaboration, and experimental forms of research sharing, publishing, and evaluation. Using mixed methods of interviews and questionnaire, we identified data challenges in digital history research practices from three perspectives: ontology (e.g., the notion of data in historical research); workflow (e.g., data collection, processing, preservation, presentation and sharing); and challenges. Extending from the results, we also provide a critical discussion of the state-of-art in digital history research, particularly in respect of metadata, data sharing, digital history training, collaboration, as well as the transformation of librarians’ roles in digital history projects. We conclude with provisional recommendations of better data practices for participants in digital history, from the perspective of library and information science.

This special issue of the Journal of Educational Media, Memory and Society explores memory practices and history education. The first point of departure for the texts collated here is that memory (whichever concept we use from the current range including collective memory, cultural memory, social memory, connected memory, prosthetic memory, multidirectional memory, travelling memory and entangled memory) is a site of political contestation, subject formation, power struggle, knowledge production, and community-building. Our second point of departure is that history education is a site where teachers and pupils as members of distinct generations engage with textbooks and other materials as specific forms of memory texts that guide what should be passed on to the younger generation. As editors, we solicited papers that investigate how what counts as “worth remembering” in a given context is reproduced, negotiated and/or interrupted in classrooms and other educational practices. This introduction aims to sketch the overarching understanding of memory practices which guide the contributions, to point to the purchase of attending explicitly to the “doing” of memory, to highlight the difference between our approach to history education and approaches focusing on historical thinking, and to introduce the six articles.

Ukraine has gone a long way in developing the right to work. The lack of own statehood for a long period led to the fact that labour relations were regulated by the legislation of empires, which included Ukrainian lands. The purpose of the article is to trace the genesis of the right to work in Ukraine from the beginning of its normative consolidation in the 19th century to the modern stage of bringing national legislation to European standards. Scientific novelty: for the first time, an analysis of the evolution of labour rights in legislation from the imperial acts to the present was carried out, the reasons for changes in the field of labour legislation were analysed. Methodology: the application of problem-chronological, comparative-historical, historical-legal methods made it possible to follow the genesis of the right to work in Ukrainian legislation from the imperial experience to the present. The combination of historical and jurisprudential methods contributed to the systematic examination of the problem, made it possible to follow the influence of the legal component on history, which determined the novelty of the research. Conclusion: The adoption of imperial legislation was conditioned by the deepening of capitalist relations, but it was limited in nature and did not adequately ensure the rights of workers. Soviet legislation regulated labour relations in more detail. Democratic principles were proclaimed, which, however, had a declarative nature, which was confirmed by the legislative consolidation of forced labour, discrimination in the field of labour relations. With the declaration of independence in Ukraine, labour relations were restructured on the basis of the market, but the Code of 1971 is still in force. With the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU in 2014, Ukrainian labour legislation is being brought closer to European standards.

The article aims to substantiate the potential of postcolonialism's theoretical approaches in rethinking an ethnographic museum's mission in a globalized, multicultural society. The methodological basis of the study based on the tools of contemporary postcolonial and memory studies, museology and anthropology. Scientific novelty. The importance of theoretical approaches to postcolonialism in rethinking the mission of an ethnographic museum in a globalized, multicultural society is substantiated. In the example of the Museum of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean in Marseille, innovative curatorial approaches are identified to decolonize the ethnographic collection and integrate the heritage of different peoples of the former colonial empire. Conclusions. The article analyses the emergence and functioning of ethnographic museums in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century as the embodiment of imperial projects. The evolution of ethnographic museums is closely connected with the development of anthropology as a scientific discipline. Ethnographic objects were seen as evidence of humanity's civilizational evolution and established differences between Europeans and "others." The challenges and peculiarities of the new paradigm of ethnographic museology in the modern world are characterized. The article presents curatorial approaches in the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean in Marseille as an example of transforming an ethnographic museum into a museum of society.

The article traces the peculiarities of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian propaganda on prisoners of war and interned persons. The state of the study of the topic in the modern historical literature is analyzed and unresolved aspects are indicated. The use of prisoners of war for political and military purposes was sought by both empires. In the course of the First World War, the Russian command took such a step as the formation of military units from the prisoners of war of the hostile army – Czechs, Slovaks and Serbs. These units were created not only as purely military but also political units – for the agitation of the Slavic population of Austria-Hungary to the rebellion against government. In the Habsburg monarchy also hoped to use prisoners of war to undermine the combat capability of the Russian army. For this purpose, the Austro-Hungarian camps began the differentiation of the prisoners on a national basis. Ukrainian and Polish prisoners of war of the czar’s army were under privileged conditions, better provided with food, as well as better conditions for leisure and educational practices. Significant work in this direction was deployed by Ukrainian organizations that functioned on the territory of Austria-Hungary. Political agitation was supplemented by religious, which was carried out by Ukrainian priests from Galicia and Bukovina. National-cultural propaganda of the Union of the Liberation of Ukraine (SVU) and the separation of prisoners on national grounds for the Austrian military command were a means of recruiting volunteers for front-line propaganda, organizing an uprising in the rear of the Russian army in the Caucasus and the Kuban. Imperial propaganda was carried out mainly through print media specifically designed for prisoners of war.A promising object of historical research is the study of the content and visual aspects of propaganda, the peculiarities of the cooperation of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian authorities with representatives of national organizations in organizing propaganda among prisoners of war.

Women's history as a relatively new trend in historical studies is being replenished by new researchers and interesting works every year. Women's fate in a war is a separate topic, which has a large number of aspects that require detailed study, new reading and rethinking. Women were forced to go through a trial of occupation and evacuation. One of the most difficult practices for women was the front experience, both in military and in the medical staff. The view on a woman as a resource in a war was inherent in both the Soviet and Nazi totalitarian authorities.Similar experiences and peculiarities of performing non-peculiar roles require additional researches. In the proposed article on the example of the representatives of one family - Rabinovyches, was made an attempt to trace various strategies and practices of life / survival / of women in the war. The role of a woman in evacuation in Soviet realms remained on the verge of official representations of events and commeratural practices, therefore the article examines the survival experience of Raisa Rabinovich. Investigating the experience of being evacuated through his sources of optics can recreate individual episodes of life, from which formed strategies of survival not only of one woman, but a group of people who were unable to solve domestic and other problems without her.The Holocaust trial also fell on Jewish women. The symbol of the Holocaust in Ukraine was Babyn Yar, in its territory almost all Jewish population of Kyiv was shot. In Babyn Yar from the family of Rabinovich nine people of Rabinovich family died - the parents of Leonid Volynsky (Rabinovich) and his aunt Faiga's family. Those remaining among the living, were forced to bear their cross of moral blame before the dead.

The article raises questions of the social history (history of institutionalization) of railways and railway mobility (or mobility of railway passenger's), which are becoming popular in the English-speaking sociology of transport, which is the reason for mainstreaming this topic in Ukraine. The questions raised are considered from the point of view of empires’ history, in particular, Great Britain, where the institutionalization of the internal railway, and later of railways in the colonies, led to the development of not only English, but also world industry, and at the same time contributed to world socio-cultural development, including the development of warfare. Our goal is to provide the reader with a preliminary introduction to a large series of books published under the general title “Studies in Imperialism”, where there are works on the institutionalization of railway transport, in particular the passenger railway, their functions, etc. The series is dominated by the idea that imperialism as a cultural phenomenon had the same significant impact on the dominant society as it did on the dependent one and that the development and operation of railways is a direct consequence of imperial ideology. It was the imperial ideology of the institutionalization of railway transport both in the metropolises themselves and on the colonized territories that gave rise to contradictions of the social order, including massive outrage, as it led to radical institutional and mental changes associated with the traditional space and time orientation of local residents, limited them in the right to voluntary movement, accustomed to movement according to someone’s and somewhere developed schedules and life according to the principle of movement from work to work, etc. Finally, the authors make a conclusion that all this fit into the postulates of the ideology of modernization and rationalization of public life, but was interpreted in terms of the colonization of others living space/time, as it accustomed to the appropriate life regime and not only while travelling by rail.

The purpose of this article is to examine the rationale for the Russian authorities’ decision to retain certain Polish administrative structures (using the khorunzhy as an example) as a transitional option for “fitting” the newly acquired territories into the larger imperial context. Methodology. General scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, comparison, and generalization) were used to collect information and analyze it. The method of comparison contributed to the comparison of the capabilities of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Empire battalions. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, on the basis of archival materials, the activities of the bailiffs were analyzed for the first time and conclusions were drawn regarding their role in the local government system. It has been demonstrated that, despite its ties to the administrative tradition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, this position acquired a distinct nature and scope of authority in the Russian Empire. The author analyzes the personnel of the battalion officers, calculates their length of service, and examines their career opportunities. Conclusions. Under Paul I, the khorunzhy in the Volyn province carried out significant and varied tasks that were subject to specific recommendations from military governors. Through the performance of state duties, the government attempted to integrate the gentry, thereby improving local governance. The absence of a salary resulted in frequent changes in the office of the managers, as they viewed the position as an opportunity for career advancement. The functioning of the khorunzhy institution proved the loyalty of a part of the elite to the empire and their willingness to serve it, which, among other things, led to the liquidation of the institutions restored by the supreme power.

The purpose of the work is to investigate the situation after the Second World War and in our time, in relation to the memory of the crimes of the Nazi regime, which were related to social and racial experiments, and their reflection in the historiography, memorial, artistic and cultural practices of Germany. Among the tasks that the authors set before themselves was the analysis of the features of the displacement/forgetting of "inconvenient" pages of history for a long period in the post-war period, and the reasons for their "return". Research methodology. Among the methodological approaches used by the authors during the preparation of the article: historiographical and source studies, methods of memory study, comparative studies, history of science, as well as a new interdisciplinary direction - disability studies, which is related to the study of the meaning, nature and consequences of disability. Scientific novelty is determined by comparing the situation of remembering the victims of the Nazi regime, whose lives were called "unworthy", and the presentation of this topic in historical and other special literature, historical memory and commemorative practices of Germany and Ukraine. Conclusions. The ideas of treating people with hereditary and acquired diseases as "social ballast" were born in the European and American intellectual environment long before the Nazis came to power in Germany. The leaders of the National Socialist Party participated in the development of state programs aimed at forced sterilization, and later - taking the lives of people with disabilities in various ways, which during the occupation of European countries acquired "scaling" in concentration camps and not only. Not only the German and Soviet governments joined in the long "forgetting" of this page of history. Not the last role was played by the position of the USA, whose medical and pharmacological fields were interested in using the results of experiments conducted on people within the framework of the outlined programs. Only thanks to the efforts of journalists, psychiatrists and former victims and relatives of the programs "Euthanasia", "Action T-4" and others, since the end of the 1980s, the process of speaking and returning to historical memory the events that led to the destroyed people Although slow, but systematic inclusion in the memorial landscapes of settlements in Germany and Ukraine, brings back the memory of the victims of Nazism and serves as a warning to humanity about the impossibility of violating the general ethical norms that keep us human. This article was written within the framework of the project "European integration and Ukraine: historical memory and migration challenges" of the Jean Monnet Erasmus+ program and consists of two parts. The end of the article will be published in the next issue of Intermarum: History, Politics, Culture magazine.

Abstract This text reflects on the author’s experience as part of the International Federation for Public History (IFPH) since 2015. In particular, it discusses what IFPH has meant for practitioners trying to leverage public history in service of social change in contexts of historical inequality and violence, and how it could potentially enhance its service even more. The text emphasizes how different local trajectories have resulted in different approaches to public history practice and makes an invitation to continue pushing for the de-centering and de-colonization of the field of public history by putting into question the academic limitations inherited from the epistemologies and trajectories of the Global North.

The aim of the paper is to analyze the reasons that influenced the attitude of the Ukrainian society to the child’s death, as well as to determine the value of the life of the smallest members of society in the light of infanticide on the example of Right-Bank Ukraine in the second half of the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The research methodology is based on the tools of modern studies of childhood and the history of everyday life, which allow us to reveal the specifics of the problem. The scientific novelty is conditioned by the fact that the attitude of modern Ukrainian society to the child’s death is analyzed on the basis of archival materials of the State Archive of Zhytomyr region, which hightlight the problem of infanticide. Conclusions. High infant mortality was an everyday phenomenon in the modern age in Right-Bank Ukraine. The socio-cultural attitudes of the society contributed to the formation of an indifferent treatment towards the small child’s life at that time, especially one born out of wedlock. The fear of social condemnation and the desire to preserve the socio-economic status pushed unmarried, single women to commit crimes against the lives of their newborn in order to hide the consequences of extramarital relations. In fact, infanticide became the main "women's" crime of the modern period and acquired the characteristics of a social phenomenon. The problem of infanticide, which was considered in the light of the value of a child's life, made it possible to conclude that the child did not have a priority status in society. The community tolerated the commission of crimes against the children’s lives that did not conform to the established social order.

AbstractEvery stage in the production, circulation and reception of a translation is profoundly marked by its historical moment, tracing a history that is distinct from the history of the foreign text. The historical nature of translation is apparent in the succession of varying methods that define it within a single culture, not only standards of accuracy, but the interpretation of the conceptual categories on which that standard is based, not only discursive strategies and the very linguistic texture of translations, but the conceptual discourses that translators inscribe in foreign texts as interpretations. Translation traditions can be sketched in which specific practices are repeatedly performed for decades, centuries, even millennia. The relations between translation universals and norms are subject to historical variation. A history of translation, like any history, endows translation practices with significance through a narrative form or mixture of forms, depending on the factors that the historian selects to describe the chronological succession of practices.

The article analyzes the historical stages of inclusive education in the United States: the first – 1960 – the stage of segregation and marginalization of people with special educational needs, the second (from 1968 to 1975) – the stage of normalization, the idea of involving disabled students in the educational environment, the third stage – educational mainstreaming (1975–1983), the fourth stage – (1983–2004) – inclusive education characterized by joint training of people with special needs with peers using typical development, the fifth –mixed educational system – a comprehensive inclusive education system starting in 2004 and until now in the United States. It was determined that the definition of “special educational needs” (learning disability), means developmental delay, disorder of one or more processes related to speaking, reading, pronunciation, writing or arithmetic abilities as a result of possible cerebral dysfunction, but not in the result of mental disorders, loss of sensitivity, cultural, educational or upbringing factors. It has been found that disorder or disability is not one specific concept, but often a mixture of disorders grouped under one broad term, and inclusive education is seen as “the process of addressing and responding to the diverse needs of students by ensuring their participation in learning, cultural activities and community life and reducing exclusion in education and the learning process”. Now intellectual level is determined by using standard intelligence tests, mostly Stanford-Binet, that allows to use individualized curricula as a basis for teaching children with disabilities in inclusive settings. But it is still clear that even in such circumstances, the problems of inclusive education remain to be complex and ambiguous. Keywords: special educational needs, children with disabilities, inclusive environment, inclusion, child with special educational needs, inclusive education, state acts, US general education system.

The article analyzes the phenomenon of educational volunteerism against the historical background and in the modern socio-cultural context. The aim of the article is to analyze the evolution of various practices and trends of educational volunteerism. The research focuses on three contradictions characteristic of educational volunteering: popularity vs. insufficient investigation, great opportunities vs. lack of developed implementation methodology, deep historical roots vs. novelty. The article employs the following methods of research: theoretical and comparative analysis, historical method, analysis of publicistic materials. The analysis of theoretical research and practical materials enables the author of the article to trace the historical development of educational volunteerism, to investigate its peculiar features that make it different form other social practices. These peculiarities illustrate three criteria: volunteering, educational and institutional. Relying on the criteria, the author concludes that the first practices of educational volunteerism were employed by the adherents of the Settlement movement in the USA. The article analyzes five major trends of pedagogical volunteerism in Russia and abroad: mentoring, guidance, tutorship, spiritual enlightenment, socio-educational support for children in difficult life situations. The article also substantiates such notions as educational volunteerism and teaching volunteers.

This essay has the objective of revisiting the intellectual output of Ricardo Bruno Mendes-Gonçalves (1946-1996), Professor of the Department of Preventive Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo and one of the theoreticians who participated in the construction of the field of Brazilian Collective Health during the years 1970-1990. On the basis of brief biographical and bibliographical information, as well as relevant aspects regarding the historical context in which his output is located, I examine the principal works of the author, their effects on the lines of investigation of investigation of his students and his legacy of contributions and challenges for Collective Health. I highlight the genesis and development of his Theory of the Health Work Process and its impact on the understanding and empirical investigation of the socio-historical dimensions of health practices and on the reconstruction of knowledge and technologies in the context of the Brazilian Health Sector Reform. In particular, I highlight his concern with the ethical perspective of academic praxis and in this sense, with hope as a human value which is historically objectified and intersubjectively constructed.

This paper provides an overview, from an historical perspective, to identify the structural factors that have created an ‘obesogenic’ environment in contemporary Samoa. The prevalence of obesity among Samoan adults had dramatically increased over the past four decades and is now affecting about 59 % of men and 81 % of women in this small island country, respectively. More alarming is the association of obesity with prevalent non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, stroke, cancer and heart attack. There are multiple factors at work which include, but not limited to, behaviour related to a nutrition transition, limited physical activities, sedentary lifestyle and cultural food practices. The question is why and how the people of Samoa changed their traditional diet, consisting mostly of taro, breadfruit, coconut, and fish, to meals consisting of mainly imported, processed food items laden with sugar, saturated fat and salt. This dietary change has not occurred because Samoan customs and culture of food has changed; it is the food that has changed. Keywords: obesity, culture, dietary practices, nutrition transition.

The article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of women’s Sufi practices in Ingush society. This article shows how and under whose influence women could take part in the rituals of a loud zikr, how women come to the fraternity, the reasons and motives driving women in search of men-tal balance, age and social composition of the participants in the ritual. We considered how spir-itual practices changed at various stages of society, in which religious fraternities the participation of women in zikr rituals is permissible. How political processes influenced female religious activ-ity associated with the zikr ritual. The consideration of this topic in this vein allows not only to see the changes that have occurred in the religious life of women’s Sufi groups in Ingushetia, but also to show what role the ritual practice of zikr has in the life of society and the participants themselves. This article uses modern methods of historical and ethnological description necessary for a detailed consideration of the regional features of the ritual practices of Ingush women.

The article examines Serbo-Croatian conflict in the XX - early XXI centuries. The history of the formation of the Serbian and Croatian statehood is analyzed; the reasons for the confrontation between two close Slavic peoples are determined and the evolution of their relationship is highlighted; clarified the determinants that determine the antagonistic nature and demonstrative cruelty of the Serbo-Croatian confrontation. The formation after the “Patriotic War” of 1991-1995 of two parallel “worlds” was stated, as a result of which the Croatian and Serbian communities hardly intersect in everyday life. Constant quarrels and fights on ethnic grounds, burning of flags and desecration of state symbols have been and remain daily occurrences from the very beginning of reintegration, and war criminals convicted by an international tribunal are perceived by the two communities as national heroes and defenders of the Motherland. It points to the gradual aggravation of interethnic confrontation in Croatia and the growth of xenophobic sentiments, which has been observed recently. The conclusion about the failure of past and modern attempts to establish Serbo-Croatian cooperation in building a common future has been substantiated. It is emphasized that the Serbo-Croatian conflict does not look exhausted, not only because of the heavy burden of the past, which causes mutual accusations and long-standing hatred. Attention is drawn to the fact that this confrontation is primarily about the future - about the fate of various national projects. The mirage of “Greater Serbia” still tempts a significant part of the Serbs, who are hatching revanchist intentions, while the Croats are determined to defend their won independence. Accordingly, under certain international conditions, the confrontation of political ambitions in the Balkans can easily flare up with renewed vigor, once again confirming the reputation of this region as a “powder keg” of Europe.

AbstractThe nature of Ireland's place within the British Empire continues to attract significant public and scholarly attention. While historians of Ireland have long accepted the complexity of Ireland's imperial past as both colonised and coloniser, the broader public debate has grown more heated in recent months, buffeted by Brexit, the Decade of Centenaries and global events. At the same time, the imperatives of social movements such as Black Lives Matter and Decolonising the Curriculum have asked us to reflect on the assumptions, hierarchies and norms underpinning the structures of society, including the production of knowledge and the higher education system. This round table brings together scholars from diverse disciplinary and methodological backgrounds to examine the prospects, possibilities and challenges of what decolonising Irish history might mean for our field. It sets these discussions within broader frameworks, considering both the relationship of Irish historical writing to postcolonial theory and the developments in the latter field in the last twenty years. It also reflects on the sociology of our discipline and makes suggestions for future research agendas.
