The Nôm Preservation Foundation recently made the libraries of two Buddhist temples near Hà Nội available in digitized form. The resulting composite temple collection allows us to pose questions about the history of the book in Vietnam. The history of the book in Vietnam must be understood from an interregional perspective. The availability of relatively inexpensive Chinese books influenced what was worthwhile to print locally. At the same time, even books with the same title are remarkably diverse in terms of content, medium, and annotation. A close look at individual books can show us what and how people read.

On the example of the publishing house "Biblion" (1919-1921) the information is provided that contributes to the study of the publishing activities of foreign organizations, subjects of Sweden and Finland, contributing to the appearance of books of fiction by many Russian authors, the most famous of which during this period were Leonid Andreev and Alexander Kuprin. For a more complete presentation of the issue of the development of Russian book publishing between 1919 and 1921, it is necessary to know not only about trends on a national scale, to see the features of the development of book publishing in the regions, but also to take into account the specifics of the work of publishing houses and publishing activities of Russian abroad. The relevance of the issue is confirmed by the lack of domestic studies on the topic of publishing Russian literature abroad. Abstract This article presents the formal and material innovations of The Underground Rail Road (1872) and its author and publisher, William Still. Before the Civil War, Still chaired the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee, which assisted hundreds of fugitives from slavery in making their way to freedom. After the Civil War, Still wrote a book based on his records of their stories. The discrimination Black writers and readers experienced from the publishing business convinced Still to start his own. Still’s publishing business, like the movement his book documented, was the work of a collective. He called on family members, allies in reform, and friends in Black periodical publishing to produce and distribute the book. Still promoted the book and the business as an extension of the liberation movement. The labors of the fugitives he had helped, and of the booksellers he employed, would stimulate the economic progress, and protect the political and social gains, for which African Americans were striving. Still, a race man and a businessman, proposed a solution to the inequitable production and distribution of Black books. “The time has come,” he declared, “for colored men to be writing books & selling them too.”

In the context of this issue, we explored the role and place of cooperative publishing houses in the formation of the domestic consumer market of book products and, through the prism of studying the problems of economic history, gave a scientific assessment of organizational, publishing and trade activities of the NEP. The field of application of results. The results of this research can be applied to study the issues of Economic History and History of Economic Thought, History of the Publishing Industry. Conclusions. Thus, cooperative publishing houses were business-type societies, organizationally and functionally belonged to cooperative societies, and on the other hand - were public associations with editorial, production, economic and socio-cultural functions. Examining the activities of cooperative publishing houses, it can be stated that they occupied an important place in the distribution and printing of various literature: socio-economic, socio-political, agricultural, artistic, children's books, textbooks, natural, military. Consumers of book products of cooperative publishing houses were the most various social and professional groups of the population: workers, peasants, employees, women, youth, military, children. By distributing literature in a country where almost two-thirds of the population was illiterate, publishing houses contributed to the full operation of educational institutions, raising the intellectual and spiritual level of society, creating conditions for the development of science, art, culture and education. There was a completely organic connection between publishers' cooperatives, cultural, educational, and scientific institutions, and a kind of intellectual and spiritual dependence developed due to the high demand for books, as publishers published literature from all fields of knowledge. The activities of cooperative publishing houses of the NEP period, especially the formation of the organizational structure and the implementation of advertising and propaganda work should be taken into account when developing the legal framework of the national program of book publishing in Ukraine.

The article considers aspects of formation and characteristics of publishing and book trade bibliography in foreign countries. Its historical experience is diverse and specific due to national conditions, but even in this diversity, the general patterns and features inherent in the publishing and book trade bibliography of many countries are clear. On the example of the history of origin, development and modern practice of publishing and book bibliography of Great Britain, the USA, Germany and France we trace both national features and regularities of the historical way and modern structure of this kind of activity. It is emphasized that bibliographic information about publishing products is the only possible form of presenting information about the product in the book trade. Management decisions, success of commercial enterprises, profit-making, etc. depend on the rules and principles on the basis of which bibliographic information is created and disseminated. The importance of modern bibliography enhances the widespread introduction of Internet technologies, their use in the sale of books and other publishing products, the organization of virtual bookstores and more.

There are three stages in the technological history of the modern book industry as a scalable and mass production of books. The main attention is paid to the history of digital books, the beginning of which is associated not so much with the beginning of digital book production, but with the advent of digital distribution. On the technical side, this meant developing common industry standards for the digital book, building a distribution infrastructure based on the Internet, and gaining broadband access to it for the mass consumer. Equally significant were the cultural shifts that accompanied or resulted from this technical transformation. The digitalization of the book itself did not have a significant impact on the industry before the ubiquity of the Internet, since the sphere of existence of digital books was limited to a small number of qualified users. Everything changed in the first two decades of the 21st century, when the laws of the “attention economy” came into force and the mechanism of competition for the user’s time by content was activated. A digital book, on the one hand, is becoming more accessible; on the other hand, the time spent on reading books is being reduced. The development of computer technologies and the Internet, in addition to removing the barrier to access to content, removes a significant number of barriers to content publication. It is important to note that the publishing filter in the context of open publication also ceases to work in legal terms, and its disappearance led, in particular, to the emergence and rapid growth of fan fiction literature, which is in the “gray” zone of copyright. The spread of the Internet, of course, creates not only problems, but also opportunities for publishers, in particular, by changing communication with readers. The Internet has made possible not only direct communication with the reader and reader communities, but also a much more effective prompt response to readers’ requests, including those supported by compelling economic incentives. The changes that are taking place in the book industry at the third stage of technological transformation have a very heterogeneous effect on publishers in different countries, depending on the degree of market development, Internet penetration, and readers’ digital content habits. The main point is that these changes take place in very different ways in different types of book publishing. Obviously, “book”, whatever its definition one gives, is just a convenient collective format for completely different texts, materialized or embodied in digital form in different ways. At the same time, the functional purpose of the text and the way the reader treats it determine the trajectory along which the industrial niche corresponding to certain types of publications will develop, in which direction it will evolve.

"Academia" Publishing House (1922–1937) books are an example of high publishing culture. For many years, the products of the publishing house have been the subject of close attention on the part of bibliophiles and collectors in many countries of the world. The reason for this interest is literary impeccability and excellent decoration. To reach unprecedented artistic heights became possible thanks to the work of the best Soviet professional artists. All the existing printing methods, the best printing houses, and graphic art techniques were used while creating these books. The history of the publishing house, covered in rare publications, alongside with triumphal events, victories at international book competitions, is full of dramatic and even tragic pages. It can be called the publishing house of repressed editors, authors, and books.Almost all the managers of Academia, many employees were subjected to repressions, were sentenced to capital punishment. Their names were extorted from the output of the entire book circulation; introductory articles were cut out, publications were discontinued, sometimes, entire print runs of books were destroyed. In modern libraries, copies of such "repressed" books have been miraculously preserved. That is why it is difficult to overestimate their historical and cultural value – genuine documentary witnesses of historical events of almost a century remoteness. The history of the Academia Publishing House is intertwined with Irkutsk, since the stuff included people whose fate related to the city on the Angara: the last head of the “Academia”, Yakov Davidovich Yanson, after the October revolution held leadership positions in the government in Irkutsk; the founder of the Soviet school of folklore and anthrax studies, Irkutsk professor Mark Konstantinovich Azadovsky also collaborated with the publishing house “Academia”.The article is the first to observe the questions of valuable collections formation and preservation in the Irkutsk Regional Universal Scientific Library named after I. I. Molchanov-Sibirsky (IRSUSL), the former library of the Irkutsk Pedagogical Institute and the library of the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V. P. Sukatchev (IRAM). Problems of literacy, correctness of speech, correction of errors in printed editions, which rose a hundred years ago, are relevant today. For the first time there are examined the textbooks published for students and professionals in book printing. The main substantive aspects of the article are the role and importance of these textbooks. At the turn of XIX-XX centuries in St. Petersburg there were several schools of book printing, where in the classroom the students got acquainted with the basic techniques of typesetting works. There was a need of publishing the special literature. The authors of textbooks have become school teachers. The article analyzes the following editions: R. Nippert «ABC Books of Eastern and Western Languages» (SPb., 1859), A.Serkov «Quick Start Guide for Compositors of Typographic Art» (St. Petersburg., 1861), G. Kerbach «Slavic Alphabet» (SPb., 1894), G. Schroeder «On the History of Alphabets» (SPb., 1896). Publications on the history of alphabets made an enormous contribution to the expansion of knowledge on book printing in Russia and formed the basis for the subsequently developed special educational literature on the art of typesetting, book printing and decorating books.

POLISH POST-WAR RESEARCH INTO THE HISTORY OF PUBLISHING IN POLAND: ACHIEVEMENTS AND RESEARCH PROPOSALSThe history of publishing in Poland encompasses many issues associated with the emergence and dissemination of printed books. Of fundamental significance to the study of these issues are the records of the publishing output: while we have nearly complete — though requiring further exploration — records of this output for 15th–18th centuries, documented in bibliographies and catalogues, the situation is worse when it comes to the 19th and 20th centuries, until the outbreak of the Second World War. In this respect what we need is not only a continuation, but a radical intensification of bibliographic work. This concerns works published in the Latin, Cyrillic, Hebrew and Greek scripts as well as musical notation. Polish book scholars devoted a lot of attention to the beginnings of printing in Poland; the historiography concerning various typographic workshops located in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is rich, though it still requires further extensive studies. The scholars were also interested in phenomena influencing the content structure of printed publications, like publishing privileges in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, censorship as well as restrictions imposed by the partitioning powers and later by Poland’s communist authorities, as a result of which Polish publications had to be printed abroad and an independent publishing movement emerged. The scholars’ research interests also focused on books as products of the work of printers and publishers, on the publication of written works. They focused both on the various components of the book title page, printer’s signet, stemmata etc. and on its editorial composition as a whole. The scholars’ undoubted achievements in their studies of the history of publishing in Poland are significant, yet in many areas they need to be continued and expanded an important task is an edition of sources for the study of the history of Polish publishing, and concentrated on the phenomena that stem from developmental tendencies in modern book studies.

Abstract Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, religious books proportionally lost popularity while travel books became more popular. This paper examines a hybrid of these two genres, Protestant missionary monographs, through a detailed analysis of David Cranz's 1767 History of Greenland, including the rationale behind publishing the book; its translation from German into English; how it was used as a political tool to influence British foreign policy; and how the book was received by British literary critics and scientists. This analysis demonstrates how authorial intentions that the religious and secular components of Protestant Missionary literature be considered as parts of a whole produced confusion and tension in the secular reception of such books.

The research centers upon the bibliographical study of the history (1991–2017) and prehistory (1957–1990) of M. M. Prishvin’s «Diaries» (1905–1954) publication recognized as the longest (18 volumes) diaries in Russian literature. In modern science Prishvin’s «Diaries» are studied in a number of aspects: as a historical and cultural chronicle of the country in 1905–1954; the writer’s self-consciousness and creative laboratory; a fiction text in the system of its motives, literary and philosophical contexts, as well as from the point of view of its publishing fate which is narrowly understood as a fragmentary history of its publication. The paper novelty is due to, first, reconstruction of the history and prehistory of the «Diaries» publication, and second, the system analysis of the publication history in connection with the changing economic models of publishing business, types of publishing houses, their repertoire, strategies, and features of the editorial work during the publication of the collected works. Moreover, the author distinguishes three types of ego-texts in Prishvin’s works (sketch books, diary, and diary books) and, accordingly, different publication strategies. The study reveals that within the prehistory of the «Diaries» publication there were two main approaches to their publishing: first, they were published in shortened versions (1986); second, in fragmentary versions based on the thematic or chronological principle, most often in a journal variant. Prishvin’s «Diaries» are considered in the context of the writer’s whole collected works: the pre-Soviet («Znanie Publishing House», 1912–1914) and the Soviet («Gosizdat», 1927–1930, 1929–1931; «Goslitizdat», 1935–1939; «Khudozhestvennaya literature», 1982–1986) periods. The history of Prishvin’s «Diaries» publication in the post-Soviet period is described as a collective book project carried out by the efforts of five state and non-state publishing houses: «Moskovskii Rabochii» (1991–1995), «Russkaya kniga» (1999–2004), «ROSSPEN» (2012); «Novyi Khronograf» (2013–2014); and «Rostok» (2006–2017). The author demonstrates the «Diaries» connection with the repertoire and strategies of these publishers. After the reconstruction of the history and prehistory of Prishvin’s «Diaries» publication from the initial fragments to full print and electronic versions, the author convincingly proves that this long-term collective book project belongs to the local history of the Russian publishing industry in the XX–XXI centuries.

In this article author examines the history of public administration of book publishing since the birth of mass printing in the middle of the XVI century to the stagnant crisis of 1980s. During this period of time the national book publishing has changed in the legal field, in copyright and censorship of the press, and in the structure of management, in establishment and functioning of supervisory authorities. In the 1980-s public administration of book publishing was an effective centralized system of regulating the book publishing and book distribution throughout the country as a whole. But the stagnant crisis of 1980-s, which took place in many sectors of the Soviet economy, demanded reform and change.

The publication of books about religion is now increasingly rapid, publishing Islamic books has been going on since the days of the classical and mid-Islamic world, where at that time science grew rapidly to enter developing countries such as Indonesia. The purpose of this article is to explore the historical history of the development of Islamic book publishing in Indonesia. The method used is library research. The development of Islamic literature in Indonesia began to boom around the 1970s. Many Islamic publications born at that time such as PT. Bulan Bintang, Gema Insani Press, PT. Al-Ma’arif, PT. Mizan Library and so on. In terms of appearance, the Islamic-themed books of the 1970s appeared to be classical in style, using newspaper and display tended to be less attractive, while publications after the 1980s appeared different because the books published looked more advanced, both in terms of their substance content, presentation style, as well as artistic. The conclusion is that Islamic education and publishers engaged in publishing Islamic books must have a strong bond in terms of the collaboration between the two countries, especially about the procurement of Islamic books needed by the community.

Problems of historical local studies, in particular diachronic research of local-history area, become especially significant at this point. This is due to the process of national and cultural revival, started over in 90s of the 20th century, the necessity of entrenchment in human consciousness of the idea of value of the native land, the birthplace, local patriotism where the sources of general Ukrainian identity are hidden. Real benefits of tireless work of the generations of the domestic intellectuals before us in the form of increase of the national Ukrainian self-consciousness, raised interest to the native language, culture, history of cities and villages, tourism development and visiting preserved heritage assets became obvious in the 30s of the 20th century. All these factors resulted in the increased demand for local-history publications that started increasingly appearing in the Ukrainian book market. That is the reason why local bookwork of Galician publishing houses of 1930s, its repertoire, publishing series and fact-based content became the subject of consideration in the present article. Here we apply a selective approach to the study of bookwork of Galician publishing houses, focusing research attention on little-known and sometimes forgotten publications. Local-history subject matter is widespread in the bookwork of Galician publishing houses and publishing societies of 1930s. The mainstream of this period was lack of specialized local-history publishing houses due to insufficient publishing base and lack of professional authors as well as non-competitive conditions on part of Polish publications in the market of travel literature. That is why local-history literature was mostly published in localhistory series of overall profile publishing houses or in special or separate books, published by publishing centers of Lviv and the county cities and towns of Galicia. As far as the content was concerned, the publications containing regional/local historical issues were mostly scientific and popular ones. In general, there were 29 books containing local studies, and 14 books of ten series and out-of-series editions have been considered in this article using selective approach. Local bookwork of Galician publishing houses of 1930s significantly facilitated the development of the Ukrainian local studies and preservation of our people’s historical memory.. Keywords: history, regional production, publishing houses, series, Ukrainian, Halychyna.

Conclusions. Thus, the staff training system for the book-trading network, including the publishing cooperative, had some specific features. Compared to the program to train workers of printing production, where the state took part actively, the financing for the training of booksellers and cooperative publishers was totally devoid of state support. This was the fundamental position of the Soviet state, which, despite the New Economic Policy, continued “to look" at the sphere of trade and the associated need to study the book market, as a relic of capitalism. It is undeniable that giving the cooperative the opportunity to organize a training system for the book-trading network to some extent intensified the market relations in the republic, facilitated the study of the specificity of readers' demand as well as stimulated the development of publishing activity in Ukraine. However, the peaceful coexistence of the socialist-organized production of printed matter and the market system of its proliferation lengthy until the end of the 1920s, when, together with the cooperative publishing houses, a training staff system for the book trade was state-controlled.

The subject of this article is an overview of Polish publishing in the exile during the World War II and first post-war years. The literary activity was mostly linked to the cultural tradition of the Second Polish Republic. The author describes this phenomenon quantitatively and presents the number of books published in the respective years. He also tries to explain which external factors, not only political and military, but also financial and organizational, affected publications of Polish books around the world. The subject of the debate is also geography of the Polish publishing. It is connected with a long term migration of different groups of people living in exile. The author not only points out the areas where Polish editorial activity was just temporary, but also the areas where it was long-lasting. The book output was a great assistance to Polish people living in diasporas, as well as to readers living in Poland. Due to the rapid globalization in the second half of the 20th century the problems of preserving and studying the historical and cultural heritage of certain territories of national states have become especially relevant and socially significant. Since the book is a form of presentation of cultural heritage values, the memorial function responsible for preserving the heritage of certain territories and making population familiar to it is of fundamental importance for regional book culture. The purpose of the study presented in the article is to reveal ways to implement the memorial function of the regional book culture in Siberia and the Far East in the 2000–2010s. As a methodological basis, the theoretical model of book culture proposed by K. Migoń was used, who distinguishes the local, regional, national, supranational, cultural-civilizational and world “cultural circles of the book”. The activities of publishing houses and publishing organizations in Siberia and the Far East are treated within the local and regional “circles” as a part of the national Russian book culture. The article shows the main actors of modern local history book publishing in Siberia and the Far East: these are the majority of regional publishing houses and those publishing organizations whose activities are institutionally related to the preservation of historical and cultural heritage (museums, archives and libraries). Methods for popularizing their products are presented. For the first time, examples of product placement in advertising local history literature are identified and presented. The author concludes that Internet is becoming the main channel for the dissemination and popularization of regional local history book production, that opens the access to a wider circle of readers of historical and cultural heritage of Siberia and the Far East.

“History of the village” is chronologically the last project in a series of major publishing projects of M. Gorky in the 1930s. The idea was not implemented. Work on the project began in February 1935. In January of this year, Gorky received a letter from Siberia, from the editor of a small Siberian newspaper N. Zharikov, who reported on the beginning of work on the history of the Siberian village. The Siberian theme as the starting point of the “History of the village” was initially rejected by Gorky. He insisted on describing “typical” villages and villages, which did not include Siberian villages. However, in a number of points of a large publishing project, the Siberian theme inevitably manifested itself, in particular, in two books that V. Ya. Zazubrin worked on. In the “History of the village” there were several major thematic blocks. A special place among them was occupied by the “Library of the collective farmer”. It was intended to be a “verbal illustration” of historical works of a popular science nature. Engaged in the “Library of the collective farmer” V. Ya. Zazubrin. He carried out the selection of texts, worked with commentators and authors of prefaces to collections. In the collection of selected chapters from the “Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow” by A. N. Radishchev, he intended to add fragments of the diary of his Siberian journey. One of the latest versions of the plan for the “Library of the collective farmer” includes the “Book about Radishchev” by V. Ya. Zazubrin, which includes a biography of Radishchev, peasant chapters “Travels from St. Petersburg to Moscow” and excerpts from the Siberian travel diary. The Book dedicated to the Russian-American company was supposed to cover the company’s activities in Siberia. The idea of the book appeared in the plans of the series thanks to S. N. Markov, a colleague of Zazubrin in the “Siberian lights”, who in 1935 was exiled in Arkhangelsk. It was Markov who told Gorky about the part of the archive of the Russian-American company discovered in Vologda. While working on the inventory of this archive, Markov initiated his Pacific card index, on the basis of which he later wrote a number of works. The history of Russian America became the main theme of his work. V. Ya. Zazubrin’s participation in the project and Gorky’s correspondence with S. N. Markov especially contributed to the development of the Siberian theme in the “History of the village”. In the thematic and production plan of the “Library of the collective farmer” for 1937, compiled after Gorky’s death, was included the book about the Russian-American company by S. N. Markov under the editorship of V. Ya. Zazubrin. In 1947, based on his Pacific card index, Sergey Markov wrote the book “Chronicle of Alaska”.

In Corpus 1 (C1) there were co-cited trade magazines and academic journals on library and information science, in Corpus 2 (C2) – academic journals mostly focused on marketing and economics. Co-authored publications constituted 42% of C1 and 63% of C2. The study showed that the research of the global book publishing market is led by interdisciplinary researchers, but rarely by international teams. Research limitations: The initial corpus of academic papers was narrowed down to 230 articles published in English between 2001 and 2018. The study did not include articles focusing on book markets in the countries that make only slight contributions to the global book publishing industry. The discipline classification adopted in the study follow that of the Scopus database. Originality/Value: This study provides insight into the research on the global publishing market and proves that it is interdisciplinary.

The article deals with definitions of «children's book», «book for children», «children's literature», «literature for children», «children's reading circle». The mentioned terms are divided into two groups. The first group includes those authors, who consider material and the structural aspects of book, its reader's purpose, printing and design. This issue was studied by S. G. Antonova, N. Z. Ryabinina, I. A. Zharkov, I. F. Pavlova, S. A. Karaichentseva. The second group considers genre and thematic characteristics of book, its effect on children development. Among researchers should be called I. N. Arzamastseva, I. G. Mineralova, S. A. Nikolaev, E. E. Zubareva, T. D. Polozova. All submitted definitions are discussed in details in the context of those tasks that solve children's editions. The author has collected theoretical and practical views of philologists, bibliologists, historians, editors on definitions of children's book and its essential meaning for each field of science. Based on scientific historicism methods and terminological analysis of general components of children edition, its material and structural sides, genre and thematic characteristics have been revealed. Functions of the children's book are determined: communicative, administrative, cognitive, educational, aesthetic ones. The article objective is studying the phenomenon complex, based on which the author has given an independent interpretation of this definition. Additional information on children's literature specific features and its «special» design is presented at National Standard GOST 7.60-90 «Editions. Fundamental types. Terms and definitions», as well as branch standards: OST 29.130-97 «Editions, terms and definitions», OST 29.127-96 «Publishing books for children», OST 29.127-2002 «Quality requirements of book and journal editions for children and adolescents». The resulting terminological analysis will be useful both for professionals of publishing and editorial business, researchers studying the history and formation of children's books, historians, as well as for teachers in the educational course «Children's Literature», «Bibliology». The conclusion is that the children's book will have a stable cover, which content and variety depends on time, professional activity of authors, artists, editors, publishers, and other persons relating to the book publishing system of the country and regions.

The article examines the role of Prince Vasyl’-Kostiantyn Ostrozʹkyi (Vasilii-Konstantin of Ostroh) as a sponsor of Ivan Fedorov and a patron of printing in the context of his other activities as a magnate. Prince Vasyl’-Kostiantyn Ostrozʹkyi actively supported book culture and sought to gather at his court in Ostroh intellectuals and artisans, including Ivan Fedorov. The fact that this otherwise frugal magnate spent considerable financial resources on these endeavors indicates that they were of particular importance to him. The prince’s library, which included printed and manuscript books, reveals his appreciation of book culture and his aspiration to transform his residence in Ostroh into a center of Ruthenian Orthodox culture. The peak of the prince’s publishing activities was in the period 1576–1580, when a complete version of the Bible was under preparation, a project that would be the focus of his literary and publishing work. The second important project that Prince Vasyl’-Kostiantyn Ostrozʹkyi undertook was educational – spreading a “pure form” of Christianity, untinged by erroneous teachings or superstitions. Despite these lofty goals, these publishing and educational objectives competed with other pressing challenges that Vasyl’-Kostiantyn Ostrozʹkyi faced as a magnate. His main priorities were the augmentation of wealth and lands under his rule, the growth and improvement of government administration, strengthening his military, and enhancing his political power, which served to increase the influence and prestige of his clan. Those more traditional, practical considerations enabled Vasyl’-Kostiantyn Ostrozʹkyi to make significant financial, political, and personal investments into book culture and publishing, including the famed Ostroh Bible printed by Ivan Fedorov.

Histories of law publishing in the United States can be found in a number of sources, several of which are listed in the bibliography that accompanies this article. Although there are no completely up-to-date treatments of the subject, the most comprehensive is probably Erwin C. Surrency'sA History of American Law Publishing(1990). Surrency discusses American legal publishing from the colonial era to the late twentieth century, but his book closes before the far-reaching changes resulting from the growth of electronic publishing and dissemination of legal information in the latter years of the twentieth century. A few sources discuss the initial impacts and implications of computer-assisted legal research databases. More recent literature on the Internet's effects on legal research is discussed in section IV of this article. Other useful sources for exploring the history of U.S. law book publishing are found in two edited collections: George S. Grossman'sLegal Research: Historical Foundations of the Electronic Age(1994); and Betty Taylor and Robert Munro's four volume set:American Law Publishing 1860-1900: Historical Readings(1984).

It should be noted that in Ukraine at the current stage of development of the market economy system, where various forms of ownership dominate, the national publishing industry is in an extremely difficult situation. The search for an effective model for the development of national book publishing is still ongoing, so why not turn to our own historical experience.

The study of scientific book publishing, due to its enormous social and state significance, is an urgent task of modern research. This article is the first to consider the system of scientific book publishing in the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) in the period of 2001–2010 thus determining and adding to the history of regional and Russian scientific book publishing. The purpose of the study is to present the development of the system for publishing scientific literature in the SB RAS during this period. The source base of the study is representative: these are numerous documents of the current archives of the Siberian enterprise “Nauka” RAS (Novosibirsk Printing House No. 4) and the Siberian Publishing Company “Nauka” RAS, regulatory acts of the Presidium of SB RAS, Annotated thematic plans for the release of scientific literature for 2002-2010, Publishing houses of SB RAS, materials of the weekly newspaper SB RAS “Science in Siberia” for the same period. The revealed data allow reconstructing the picture of the scientific book publishing system development in SB RAS and its thematic orientation in the first decade of the XXI century. The results obtained show that the prevailing part of published scientific literature – every third edition – during this period was on archeology, history, philology, philosophy, law.The study refined quantitative data on the release of serial publications, revealed the role of the Presidium SB RAS in developing the system of scientific book publishing, expanded the idea of cooperation between SB RAS and SIF “Nauka” RAS.The results obtained provide an opportunity to redefine and assess the evolution of their relationship during the period under review. The continuing decrease in the share of CIF in the total volume of publications of SB RAS can be interpreted as the crisis increase, but the implementation of significant and complex publishing projects speaks for a new paradigm of relations between them: mutually beneficial, effective and promising.
