The aging of the population has imposed sustainability issues to Social Security, which has led to a glowing debate about what the full retirement age (FRA) should be and whether working longer is a fair and realistic expectation for everyone – or just for those who have a certain level of control over their retirement decision. It was estimated that by 2013, there were over 50% household at risk of financial insecurity in retirement. Thus, having to retire earlier might mean that individuals are in a particular precarious situation financially. Evidence suggests that in order to make ends meet, workers intend to stay on the job longer. About 27% of workers state they plan to work at retirement and 24% state they plan to continue to work until they are not able to do so. However, 50% of retiree retired earlier than planned, and only 24% of them did so because they realized they could afford retirement, while the remaining 76% retired involuntarily due to health or lay-offs. Evidence suggest that there are startling ethno-racial differences regarding retirement preparedness and planning. Hispanics tend to do little to none retirement planning, and tend to face retirement insecurity, which is expressed as high dependency in Social Security and poverty rates three times higher compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Some recent qualitative research has pointed out that for Hispanics there might be cultural elements at play. Few studies have explored ethno-racial disparities regarding retirement planning and decisions and the results are inconsistent. Ethno-racial and cultural variables are some of the most understudied variables in the retirement planning literature. The present dissertation seeks to contribute to fill some of these gaps by exploring ethno-racial differences between Hispanics and non-Hispanics in the U.S. regarding, retirement planning, retirement decisions and retirement outcomes. Results indicate that there are significant differences between Hispanics and non-Hispanics, especially foreign-born Hispanics. This as the result of the complex relationship of Hispanics’ culture and their migration experience that has been marked by diminished labor market conditions, which along with Hispanics’ lack of education and English proficiency has limited their working opportunities

Undocumented immigrants are an exploited and disenfranchised faction of society that garner counterfactual attitudes by the public. This study aims to dispel myths held among the public by contesting fiction with facts. First, I argue that media sources and misinformation have culpability in inciting the publics' misguided perceptions about undocumented immigrants. For example, the images propelled to viewers reproduce moral panics, stratification, subjugation, social injustice and the fallacious notion that Mexican‟s are representative of all Hispanic unauthorized immigrants. This thesis then examines the public opinion responses of participants from the CBS and New York Times monthly survey poll of May 2007, compared to academic and government sources on health care, terrorism, and economics. The analysis concludes that participants‟ responses reveal misconceptions on the usage of health care by undocumented immigrants; the threat of terrorism as a means to deny Hispanics citizenship; the economic impact of cost to benefit analysis of the undocumented; and that Mexicans are not representative of all undocumented immigrant groups.

Translating and interpreting in the highly regulated and specialized hospitals and courts of the United States require transferring concepts from L1 to L2 in the most consistent, efficient and effective manner. The English and Spanish translators and interpreters who work in these contexts for Spanish speakers in the United States are challenged by a target audience that includes individuals from every Spanish speaking country in the world, a diverse group of people with a number of linguistic and cultural differences. These challenges are compounded by the specialized language discourse inherent to health and legal systems that are new to the members of the target audience and often very different from the systems of their countries. The lexicon they use when navigating these new systems is generally learned in the context of the host country, and it has an impact on how they communicate in Spanish. Some of the language solutions that US Hispanics adopt in these circumstances include code-switching, lexical borrowing and hybrid creations that are functionally more practical in the new paradigm and that result in unique forms of Spanish. This study examines the challenges that professional medical and legal translators and interpreters face in the intercommunicative process of this environment. It also explores the translation decisions they make and their motivating factors. The results suggest that translators and interpreters, especially the ones with greater professional experience, negotiate between form and function, in order to fulfill the communicative demands of their profession.

Повний текст джерелаSituations of population contact imply social, cultural and linguistic dynamics from which the protagonists never remain unscathed. This is the case of Hispanics in the United States, whose contact with the US culture favored the development of a mixed culture and a linguistic phenomenon known as Spanglish. Spanglish evokes concurrently linguistic, social, cultural and political questions and the purpose of the present work is to elucidate its implications in linguistics. This study focuses on transfers from English into United States Spanish, and on how these variations obey the system’s parameters. The present analysis is the latest in a series of linguistic studies focused on the oneness of the sign. It is based on the principle that variations that appeared in United States Spanish are significant ; their emergence reveals the system’s inherent dynamics and challenges the immutable nature of the cultural and linguistic factors that define the Hispanic civilization

Sagiraju, Hari Krishna Raju. "Female invasive breast cancer mortality trends among Hispanic population in the United States from 1990 to 2012." Thesis, The University of Texas School of Public Health, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10183280.
Повний текст джерелаIntroduction: Analyzing trends in breast cancer mortality can ensure a precise characterization of changes over time and can be important in public health decision making. Most reported trends are limited to incidence and mortality rates among Whites and Blacks, without categorization regarding tumor clinical characteristics. This study analyzed breast cancer mortality trends among different race-ethnic groups using various approaches such as partitioning rates by factors associated at the time of diagnosis; taking into consideration age, cohort and period effects; and by evaluating geographical variations.
Methods: Incidence and mortality data from 1990 to 2012 of female invasive breast cancer among women aged 18-84 years in United States (U.S.) was provided by the National Cancer Institute. The following analyses were conducted: (1) calculation of incidence based mortality (IBM) rates by estrogen receptor (ER) status according to race-ethnicity; (2) examination of temporal trends using age-period-cohort (APC) analysis on incidence and mortality rates; and, (3) spatiotemporal analysis of the county level age-standardized breast cancer mortality rates to identify significant geographical areas with higher risk.
Results: IBM rates for ER+ tumors increased while those of ER- tumors decreased among all race-ethnic groups. APC analysis showed that race-ethnic disparities were largely among the ER- tumors and temporal trends of the ER+ tumors were similar across the race-ethnic groups, with identical effects across the various birth cohorts. Geographical variation in the breast cancer county-level mortality rate was mostly explained by age-standardization and county level risk factors, although the effect of these factors was greater in rural areas of western U.S.
Conclusion: Temporal trends in the IBM rates were more reflective of the recent changes in the incidence trends of female invasive breast cancer. Trends of ER+ tumors were similar across all race-ethnic groups suggesting a common risk factor for the persistent increase in the incidence and mortality of these tumors. Spatial analysis shows that the higher mortality risk in certain rural counties of western U.S. might be due to poor survival than an elevated incidence and the need for better health care access in these medically underserved areas. These results might explain the observed ethnic and geographic variations in breast cancer mortality, and in turn, could support a stronger theoretical basis for public health policy.

Повний текст джерелаThis historical analysis focuses on the Lower Rio Grande Valley, particularly Starr County. It reviewed thousands of pages of archival records, historical news reports, feature profiles, city, state, and federal government documents, interviews, videos, and academic examinations.
This thesis borrows biographical, narrative, and borderlands history approaches to portray Dr. Mario E. Ramirez as a man who believed that he could make a difference in many Valley lives. It argues and demonstrates that he successfully and repeatedly realized that belief throughout the fields of medicine, politics, and education.
The thesis examines 1967's Hurricane Beulah as a dramatic example of how Ramirez --who assumed a leadership role in the medical relief efforts on both sides of the Rio Grande -- utilized his community standing, his professional standing as a South Texas doctor, and his familiarity with a predominantly Mexican-American population to improve his Starr County community. The Beulah relief efforts enhanced his image as a role model, as a legitimate community voice, and as a state and national representative of Valley needs.
Ramirez's political and professional achievements enabled him to guide thousands of Valley residents into medical careers. Many of them returned to the Valley, as he did, to care for their communities. His ambitions also made him a cornerstone of efforts to build and strengthen medical education and health care throughout South Texas.
