Abstract Both the Martin Luther King Jr.–led Selma voting rights campaign of 1965 and the 2017 “Summer of Hate” in Charlottesville produced a white female martyr. Viola Liuzzo was murdered by KKK members at the end of the Selma-to-Montgomery march that culminated the Selma campaign. Heather Heyer was murdered in a terrorist car attack by a neo-Nazi at the end of the suspended “Unite the Right” rally. Both women were hailed in the press as heroes. Both were misogynistically attacked in white supremacist media—in ways that were almost identical. How can we understand the media representation of white women as racial justice activists and the ways white supremacists understand them in their media platforms? What about the media treatment of African American women activists in Selma and Charlottesville? What's changed, and what hasn't, in fifty years? What can this comparative case study suggest about how the media tends to portray white women and women of color in other social change movements?

Montrul's study is an important contribution to a recently emerged research approach to the study of bilingualism and languages in contact, characterized by its sound theoretical basis and its reliance on data from different – and traditionally non-integrated – domains of language development: bilingual first language acquisition (Müller and Hulk, 2001; Paradis and Navarro, 2003; Serratrice, 2004; Serratrice, Sorace and Paoli, in press), adult second language acquisition (Filiaci, 2003; Sorace, 2003), and native language attrition (Gurel, 2002; Tsimpli, Sorace, Heycock and Filiaci, in press). The generalization that is emerging from this approach is that interfaces between syntax and other cognitive systems (i.e. discourse pragmatics, lexical-semantics) exhibit more developmental instability than narrow syntax. For L1 attrition, which is the specific focus of the paper, this means that aspects of grammar at the syntax–discourse interface are more vulnerable to attrition than purely syntactic aspects. The identification of restrictions on the domain of occurrence of attrition is consistent with much previous descriptive research on this topic (e.g. Seliger and Vago, 1991). More recently, the same conclusion has been reached by a study on individual language attrition by Tsimpli et al. (in press), who investigated knowledge of the referential pronominal system in Greek and Italian in very advanced speakers of English. In this paper, Montrul tests the generalization on second-generation speakers of Spanish – or “heritage speakers” – a bilingual group that presents different characteristics from the adult L2 speakers investigated in Tsimpli et al.'s study. In addition to referential subjects, she also focuses on a different interface area of grammar – direct objects – that had not been investigated before. In these respects, Montrul's study is a welcome development. In other respects, however, the data are less than convincing and do not allow a straightforward interpretation. My commentary focuses on three fundamental questions raised not only by this study, but also by this type of research in general. The main focus will be the expression of referential subjects since this aspect of grammar has been investigated in other studies and therefore offers the possibility of direct comparison among results.

"Mehmet Şükrü (Gülez) Bey belongs to a well-established family called İlyaszadeler in Bolu. He published a newspaper in Bolu under the name of “Dertli” to support the National Struggle and inform the people about the invasions through the press, and to spread the resistance. He also played an important role in the foundation of Bolu Müdafaa-i Hukuk Cemiyeti. Upon the occupation of Istanbul, he ensured the safety of Ismet Pasha, on their way to Ankara, by welcoming them in Bolu. Mehmet Şükrü Bey became a pioneer attracting attention of the locals in Bolu to support for the National Struggle and he was elected as the deputy of Bolu in the first Turkish Grand National Assembly. However, he was not present at the opening of the parliament since he was appointed by Mustafa Kemal Pasha as a member of Heyet-i Nâsıha, which was organized to prevent the rebellion that broke out in the Düzce-Bolu region against the assembly. He was taken prisoner by the rebels in Gerede and imprisoned in Düzce. When the Kuvâ- yı Milliye troops entered Düzce, he was freed from captivity and travelled to Ankara. Mehmet Şükrü Bey, had served in the justice, land registry-cadaster and economics commissions in the Parliament. He was recognized as one of the names close to Mustafa Kemal Pasha. He adopted the republican ideology and became a defender of the Turkish Revolution. For his support to the National Struggle, he was granted the Independence Medal with a red-green ribbon."
