Uppsatsens syfte var att undersöka om begreppet Hen kan fylla en funktion i skolans jämställdhetsarbete. Jag har genomfört både kvalitativa och kvantitativa studier genom tre djupdykningar, en enkätundersökning som verksamma lärare svarade på, tre semistrukturerade intervjuer med informanter som främst representerar ett akademiskt perspektiv samt en textanalys från ett kapitel av en lärobok. Resultatet har jag teoretiserat genom Hirdmans begrepp det stereotypa genuskontraktet, Butlers teori om performativitet och genom den binära genusuppdelningens betydelse i genusordningen samt ställt resultatet i relation till tidigare forskning. Resultatet av teoretiseringen pekar i stor utsträckning på att de verksamma lärarna ser ett problem med det stereotypa genuskontraktet samt performativitet, men inte den binära genusuppdelningen. Informanterna såg problem med alla dessa begrepp då de är en del av genusordningen. I textanalysen framkom att läromedlet inte stämde överens med skolans uppdrag, att aktivt motarbeta traditionella könsmönster, då texten agerade konserverande i samtliga begrepp. Slutsatsen av uppsatsen är att eftersom genusordningen upprätthålls i skolan genom den binära genusordningen och performativa processer, har Hen en tydlig teoretisk funktion i skolan jämställdhetsarbete och kan därför vara gynnsamt att införa i skolans verksamhet.

Omega-3 enriched eggs serve as an important functional food to boost consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) critical for good health. Because omega-3 eggs have the potential for unpleasant aromas and flavours, this research was designed to assess the fatty acid profile and sensory attributes of eggs procured from hens consuming designer diets. In the first study, the use of hemp in hen diets led to significant increases in omega-3 PUFA content and colour intensity of yolks, but did not have adverse effects on the sensory profiles of cooked eggs. Additionally, the level of docosahexaenoic acid was the same in eggs from both the lowest and highest hempseed oil groups. In order to overcome this plateau, the second study assessed diets varying in linoleic acid (LA) content. Although docosapentaenoic acid in the yolk was significantly increased with an increasing dietary LA content, docosahexaenoic acid remained unaffected by dietary treatment. In the third study, a different approach was used to reduce competition between alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and LA. Diets containing two levels of ALA and varying ratios of saturated fatty acids (SFA): LA + oleic acid (OA) were tested. Increasing dietary SFA: LA + OA resulted in marked increases in all n-3 PUFA. The fourth study was designed to assess the interaction between dietary constituents on sensory attributes of eggs, namely omega-3 PUFA from flaxseed oil (FO), and canola meal (CM), which contains precursors to trimethylamine, which may lead to fishy taint. Oceanic flavour significantly increased with inclusion of FO, while egg, creamy and buttery flavours showed a decrease. The pairing of CM and FO resulted in a significant decrease in egg flavour compared to using FO alone. This research has demonstrated that novel ingredients like hemp can be used in laying hen diets to deposit n-3 PUFA into eggs without fear of affecting sensory outcomes. Increasing the SFA: LA + OA ratio in layer diets is most effective in increasing yolk ALA conversion into long-chain PUFA. Lastly, CM should be added to diets with caution when used in conjunction with omega-3 PUFA ingredients due to a reduction in egg flavour.

I denna studie analyseras funktionen av ordet hen i syfte att undersöka hur ordet används i dag. Hen fungerar som könsneutralt pronomen i svenskan men fyller även andra syntaktiska och könsöverskridande funktioner. Materialet har analyserats med en kvantitativ ansats och består av texter från dagspress där de olika förekomsterna av hen har kategoriserats efter funktion och texttyp. Uppsatsens avsnitt om teori behandlar språkplanering, feministisk språkplanering och hens uppkomst. Resultatet visar att hen främst fyller syntaktiska funktioner i dagspress, där 143 av 167 förekomster av ordet användes i funktioner som i den här studien kategoriserats som syntaktiska. Den vanligaste funktionen i materialet var hen i generisk referens. Ordet användes inom 15 olika texttyper inom dagspress, främst artiklar och krönikor, där hen i generisk referens var vanligast i artiklar och hen i maskerande funktion var vanligast i krönikor.
This study analyzes the function of the Swedish gender-neutral pronoun hen with the purpose of examining how the word is used today. Aside from being used as a gender-neutral pronoun, hen is also used in other syntactical functions as well as gender-transcending functions. The study material consists of texts from daily press that have been analyzed through a quantitative method. The various uses of hen have been categorized by function and text type. The theoretical part of the study introduces language planning, feminist language planning, and the origins of hen. The results of the study indicate that hen mainly fills a syntactical function in daily press, as 143 out of 167 uses of the word were in functions that can be categorized as syntactical. The most common function of hen found in the material was hen in generic reference. Hen was used in 15 different text types within daily press, most commonly in articles and columns. In articles, hen in generic reference was most common, while in columns most of the found hen were used in a concealing function.

During middle childhood, help seeking and avoidance are two ways children deal with academic problems. For this study, the dominant view of help seeking as a strategy of self-regulated learning was elaborated to consider it a way of coping framed within the Self-System Model of Motivational Development. This framework allows for the consideration of (1) the opposite of help seeking (help avoidance) as a motivated way of coping, (2) the central role of teachers, and (3) the operation of multiple self-system processes in shaping students' coping behaviors. Self-report, teacher-report, and school record data from 765 3rd through 61 h grade students and their teachers were analyzed to determine the structure of help seeking and avoidance, the antecedents and consequences of these ways of coping, and developmental differences that may account for age-related changes in coping. Data were available from two time points, the fall and spring of one academic year, allowing for concurrent and change over time analyses.

This document will present the business idea of Neuro Help, an online service of psychology consultations in the specialist of neurology. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the proposition that group members use help-seeking as a strategic tool for managing and enhancing the ingroup’s image in the eyes of outgroups. The theoretical introduction outlines and assesses the history of helping-transaction research, beginning with the rich and multi-faceted work carried out by anthropologists and sociologists, before considering how social psychology has addressed this topic. The conclusion from this assessment is that the academic contribution of much of the social psychological helping-transaction research from the 1960s onwards was limited, due to its failure to address: i) the relevance of social groups, and ii) the idea that engagement in helping transactions can be motivated by desires to achieve underlying goals that relate to personal improvement or gain. Although more recent social psychological work investigated these issues, they remain under-studied. Attempting to address these neglected areas, this thesis adopts a social identity perspective, and conceptualises help-seeking as an image-management strategy. This concept is investigated in the context of a specific phenomenon with the potential to threaten the group’s image: a salient meta-stereotype. Meta-stereotypes are the stereotypes we believe to be held about our group by outgroups, and are context-dependent and often negative in valence. The prediction is thus made that group members will utilize the act of help-seeking strategically, to attempt to challenge salient negative meta-stereotypes. This is predicted to occur independently of levels of material need.This hypothesis is tested across seven experiments. Study 1 provides initial exploration of the concept, and suggests that the threat associated with help-seeking depends on how participants categorize themselves (and thus the help-giver). Studies 2 and 3 provide the first explicit manipulations of meta-stereotype salience in the thesis. Study 2 reveals that encouraging female participants to consider the idea that males perceive females as dependent leads to higher levels of perceived meta-stereotype unfairness than a purely interpersonal context, and that these perceptions of unfairness lead to reduced help-seeking from the outgroup. Study 3 strengthens this finding by shifting to an alternative identity (nationality: Scottish vs. English). It shows that, for participants who act strongly as Scots during the study, being encouraged to consider the idea that the English perceive the Scots as handout-dependent leads to less outgroup help-seeking than either an interpersonal context or an intergroup context without a salient meta-stereotype. This suggests salient meta-stereotypes have effects on help-seeking beyond those produced by a simple intergroup context. Study 4 shows these help-seeking-related effects can be obtained via a more naturalistic meta-stereotype manipulation, and also examines the relevance of the helpers’ group membership. Finally, Studies 5, 6 and 7 provide a more in-depth analysis of the key concept of strategy. Together, these last three studies show group members take heed of the contents of salient meta-stereotypes, and tailor their strategic stereotype-challenging behaviours depending on these specific contents. Moreover, these studies indicate that the nature of the meta-stereotype contents can sometimes increase participants’ help-seeking. The General Discussion summarises the thesis’ main findings and considers their contribution to the help-seeking literature and the real world.

By playing to people's aspirations, many self-help practitioners have become wealthy, but there is a danger that some self-help products can have a harmful effect on people, and at best give rise to an insufferable hubris. Consequently, we have witnessed a rise in popular texts that spoof the self-help industry. The excesses of the self-help industry make it an easy target for satire. Self-help is well matched to satire's function to provide social commentary by ridicule of targets causing harm to the well-being of society. Self-help is an appropriate subject for satire because of its focus on social behavior such as modern parenting, consumerism and status anxiety. Analitzem i proposem diverses versions millorades d’algorismes existents d'aprenentatge d’autòmats finits deterministes. Les nostres millores pertanyen a la categoria d'aprenentatge amb ajuda, amb l'objectiu d'accelerar o influir en la qualitat del procés d'aprenentatge. Una part considerable del nostre treball es basa en un enfocament pràctic; per a cada algorisme que tractem, hi ha resultats comparatius obtinguts després de la implementació i posada a prova dels processos d'aprenentatge en conjunts d'autòmats generats aleatòriament. Després de fer un gran nombre d’experiments, presentem gràfics i dades numèriques amb els resultats comparats que hem obtingut. Estudiem algorismes pertanyents a dos models diferents d'aprenentatge: actiu i passiu. Un augment del nombre de símbols de sortida permet un nombre reduït de preguntes; una orientació al llarg del procés d'aprenentatge dóna una única resposta per a diverses preguntes; la millora de l'estructura d'aprenentatge permet una millor exploració de l'entorn d'aprenentatge. En el marc de l'aprenentatge actiu, un algorisme d'aprenentatge amb preguntes modificades i amb un etiquetatge útil no trivial és capaç d'aprendre autòmats sense contraexemples. Es revisen les preguntes de correcció definint-les com un tipus particular d'etiquetatge. Introduïm correccions minimals, maximals i a l'atzar. Un algorisme clàssic aprèn autòmats típics amb recorreguts aleatòries dins del marc d'aprenentatge passiu en línia. Per l'algorisme original, no podem estimar el nombre d'assaigs necessaris per aprendre completament un autòmat per alguns casos. Afegint transicions inverses al graf subjacent de l'autòmat, el recorregut aleatori actúa com un recorregut aleatori en un graf no dirigit. L'avantatge és que, per a aquests grafs, hi ha un límit superior polinòmic per al temps de cobertura. El nou algorisme és encara un algorisme eficient amb un límit superior polinòmic pel nombre d'errors per defecte i el nombre d'assaigs.
Analizamos y proponemos varias versiones mejoradas de los algoritmos de aprendizaje existentes para autómatas finitos deterministas. Nuestras mejoras pertenecen a la categoría de aprendizaje com ayuda, con el objetivo de acelerar, o influir sobre la calidad del proceso de aprendizaje. Una parte considerable de nuestro trabajo se basa en un enfoque práctico; para cada algoritmo que se presenta, existen resultados comparativos obtenidos después de la implementación y puesta a prueba de los procesos de aprendizaje en conjuntos de autómatas generados aleatoriamente. Después de muchos experimentos, presentamos gráficos y datos numéricos con los resultados comparados que hemos obtenido . Estudiamos algoritmos pertenecientes a dos modelos diferentes de aprendizaje: activo y pasivo. Un aumento del número de símbolos de salida permite un número reducido de consultas; una orientación parcial a lo largo del camino de aprendizaje da los resultados de varias consultas como uno solo; la mejora de la estructura de aprendizaje permite una mejor exploración del entorno de aprendizaje. En el marco del aprendizaje activo, un algoritmo de aprendizaje com consulta modificada y dotado de un etiquetado de ayuda no trivial es capaz de aprender autómatas sin contraejemplos. Se revisan las consultas de corrección definiéndolas como tipos particulares de etiquetado. Introducimos correcciones minimales, maximales y al azar. Un algoritmo clásico aprende autómatas típicos de recorridos aleatorios en el marco del aprendizaje pasivo en línea. Para el algoritmo original, no podemos estimar el número de intentos necesarios para aprender completamente el autómata para algunos casos. Añadiendo transiciones inversas al grafo subyacente del autómata, el recorrido aleatorio actúa como un recorrido aleatorio en un grafo no dirigido. La ventaja es que, para estos grafos, existe un límite superior polinómico para el tiempo de cobertura. El nuevo algoritmo es todavía un algoritmo eficiente con límites superiores polinómicos para el número de errores por defecto y el número de intentos.
We analyze and propose several enhanced versions of existing learning algorithms for deterministic finite automata. Our improvements belong to the category of helpful learning, aiming to speed up, or to influence the quality of the learning process. A considerable part of our work is based on a practical approach; for each algorithm we discuss, there are comparative results, obtained after the implementation and testing of the learning processes on sets of randomly generated automata. After extended experiments, we present graphs and numerical data with the comparative results that we obtained. We study algorithms belonging to two different learning models: active and passive. An increased number of output symbols allows a reduced number of queries; some partial guidance along the learning path gives the results of several queries as a single one; enhancing the learning structure permits a better exploration of the learning environment. In the active learning framework, a modified query learning algorithm benefiting by a nontrivial helpful labeling is able to learn automata without counterexamples. We review the correction queries defining them as particular types of labeling. We introduce minimal corrections, maximal corrections, and random corrections. A classic algorithm learns typical automata from random walks in the online passive learning framework. For the original algorithm, we cannot estimate the number of trials needed to learn completely a target automaton for some cases. Adding inverse transitions to the underlying graph of the target automaton, the random walk acts as a random walk on an undirected graph. The advantage is, that for such graphs, there exists a polynomial upper bound for the cover time. The new algorithm is still an efficient algorithm with a polynomial upper bound for the number of default mistakes and the number of trials.

Jeden Studierenden prägt seine Alma mater ein Leben lang. Walter Henns Laufbahn begann an der Technischen Hochschule Dresden, über die er sagte: „Der eine oder der andere wirft mir vielleicht vor, dass ich undankbar bin, wenn ich diese Hochschule verlasse, aber an der Hochschule, an der man studiert hat, promoviert hat, Assistent und schließlich Professor war, an dieser Hochschule wächst man nicht mehr weiter.“ (Manuskript-Fragment der Abschiedsvorlesung, S. 36, Mscr.Dresd.App. 2842, 187). Ungewöhnlich früh hat er selbst Einfluss auf die bauliche Entwicklung der kriegszerstörten Stadt genommen, die er 1955 auch wegen der zunehmenden ideologischen Einengung verließ. Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. Dr. techn. h.c. mult. Walter Henn starb am 13. August 2006. Er war ein Architekt und Bauingenieur, der so vielfältig in Erscheinung trat: als einer der federführenden Architekten beim Wiederaufbau der TH Dresden nach 1945, der heutigen Technischen Universität, als Architekt zahlreicher Industrie- und Ingenieursbauten im In- und Ausland, als Wissenschaftler im disziplinären Austausch über politische Grenzen hinweg, als Vermittler zwischen den politischen Systemen, als Publizist.

This thesis is a study of the role of the domiciliary home help and community auxiliary nursing services in England and Wales. The origins of the two services, interwoven as they are with political, social and demographic changes, are traced. Factors in the development of the services such as the effects of war, infant mortality, the professionalisation of nursing and medicine, the low status of domestic service, the role of voluntary organisations and the policies of successive governments in particular since 1948, are discussed. The parallel development of both services since 1948 is analysed. The increase in the numbers employed in the auxiliary nursing field, since the separation of nursing and the home help service in 1972, and its effect upon the role of the home help is examined. The concern at the possible duplication and overlapping of a role, because of the independent development of the two services since 1972, is also discussed. In an attempt to identify the actual tasks carried out by both groups of workers, I carried out a large study of the role of each group. A postal questionnaire, listing 110 tasks was completed by 1037 home helps in 20 Local Authorities and 1368 nursing auxiliaries in 81 District Health Authorities. The completed questionnaires were analysed under the headings of: Professional Nursing; Basic Nursing; Administrative; Domestic; Personal; Advisory; Escorting and Miscellaneous Tasks. The data collected on the role of the home help and auxiliary nurse is examined and areas of potential overlap discussed, along with an analysis of the perception that each group has of their role. The variation in practice in differing authorities is also discussed. The thesis is concluded by a summary and conclusions. La Clínica dental inicia sus operaciones en el año 2007 bajo el nombre de “CLINICA DENTAL ODONTOLÓGIKA” ubicada en la ciudad de Santiago de Chile, dedicada desde ese entonces a la prestación de servicios odontológicos de calidad y diferenciados dirigidos a pacientes muy seleccionados a quienes se la aplicaba tratamientos especializados en ortodoncia e implantes aprovechando que en ese entonces en Chile los especialistas no eran muchos y gozaban de prestigio. A lo largo de este periodo ha ido construyendo una imagen, posicionando su marca y penetrando en el mercado de las Comunas de Providencia, Ñuñoa y Las Condes. Ha tenido en cuenta ventajas diferenciadoras basadas en la calidad de servicio y el trato a los pacientes, su Gerente Katia Barrios Heredia cirujano dentista otorgada por la universidad de Córdoba de Argentina, especialista en rehabilitación de Implantes de la universidad Chile y kinesióloga Maxilofacial se ha esforzado por mantener su clínica activa contratando especialistas muy preparados y adecuando sus instalaciones con la mejor tecnología odontológica con la que presta un servicio seguro siguiendo los mejores protocolos de higiene y seguridad , además cuenta con las respectivas aprobaciones de funcionamiento otorgadas por la municipalidad 1 y la Secretaria ministerial regional de Salud (SEREMI)2 , la Clínica está legalmente constituida como sociedad profesional ante registro de comercio 3 . Cuenta actualmente con uno 2000 pacientes y junto con ellos ha construido una red por medio de los cual ha logrado atraer más pacientes, no utiliza la publicidad y los medios digitales como potencial contacto para atraer más pacientes. No planifica las estrategias para darse a conocer y fidelizar más a sus pacientes, tampoco tiene una base de datos digital, por otro lado, la prestación de los servicios de odontología se ha popularizado tanto en Chile el cual la ha obligado a preocuparse por sus ingresos ya que efectivamente se han reducido estos últimos años. Katia no ha contratado para implementar un plan de marketing que le garantice imponer su marca en el mercado odontológico, aumentar la recordación en sus pacientes, fidelizarlos y aumentar sus ingresos en un corto plazo. Se cuenta con el apoyo de la gerencia y un presupuesto considerable para implementar una propuesta de valor diferenciada basada las 7(P) de marketing mix. Todo lo anterior demandará de una investigación de mercado para encontrar el segmento ideal sobre los que implementaremos varias estrategias diferenciadas que garanticen el resurgimiento de la clínica actual con la nueva marca “Dental Help” y la prestación de un servicio odontológico diferenciado que cautivara a los pacientes y aumentará los ingresos a corto plazo

There is an increasing demand for natural fibres in the textile industry as a consequence of the negative impact of the industry on the environment. Svensk Hampaindustri (SHI) is currently growing hemp in Sweden for its seeds. This leaves residue in the form of hemp stems that could be processed for textile products. Today this residue material is not used for anything, however there is a desire that it could be used for added value. This study investigates the possibility of extracting fibres from the hemp residue mechanically and using them in applications. Hemp, a variety of Cannabis sativa L., is a multipurpose low-input crop cultivated for its seeds, fibres and hurds. Hemp fibre is a bast fibre, derived from the plant’s outer stem tissues. To extract hemp fibres from hemp stems, the first step is to separate the fibre bundles from the other, non-fibrous parts of the stem. This process is done using various mechanical methods. In order to ease the separation, hemp stems are retted. Retting is a biological process that uses enzymatic activities to degrade the pectins and thus making the separation easier. Retting is one of the most considerable challenges towards a wider use of hemp fibres. Water retting offers high fibre-quality but consumes high amounts of water and causes effluents in the wastewater. Dew retting offers a high fibre yield and low labour costs but will result in a lower fibre-quality. Alternative methods that can contribute with a more consistent fibre yield and quality are available, but with an economic uncertainty for the farmers that limits the competitiveness of the hemp fibre. The hemp material provided by SHI was unretted and needed to be broken down by means of mechanical processing in order to extract the fibres. This was done using a domestic blender. The crushed material was then carded using a hand carding machine to achieve oriented and clean fibres. The obtained fibres were then evaluated for their length and fineness. Three different types of nonwoven were made using the hemp fibres: NW1, NW2 and NW3. NW1 consists of 100% hemp, whereas NW2 and NW3 are 80/20 blends of hemp and PLA. NW1 was needle punched, NW2 was thermally bonded and NW3 was manufactured by both thermal bonding and needle punching. The produced nonwovens were evaluated by their air permeability, thermal conductivity, sound absorption, drapability and tensile strength. The results from the study showed that it is possible to extract unretted fibres using mechanical methods. The fibres are quite coarse and therefore more suitable for industrial applications. The different production methods for the nonwovens gave different results which supports the diversity of hemp applications. This study suggests that the residue should be used rather than be disposed of.

This thesis examines the utility of self-help for individuals with disfigurements. While variations in adjustment exist, research has also identified high levels of psychosocial distress, particularly relating to social anxiety and fear of negative evaluations. Psychological interventions have the potential to improve psychosocial functioning. However, owing to the stigma of disfigurements and gaps in services, psychological interventions are scarce. There is scope for self-help to meet the gaps in services. The first section is a systematic review of self-help for disfigurements. The aims were to identify and appraise what is currently known about self-help and explore outcomes and user perspectives in its use. Nine studies with varied methodology met the inclusion criteria. Randomised controlled trials are scarce but demonstrate tentative support for self-help interventions to lower psychosocial distress, particularly in reducing anxiety. Self-help is also actively sought with satisfaction for the medium. Recommendations for future research and clinical implications are discussed. To meet the gaps identified by the review, a randomised controlled feasibility trial was conducted with a psoriasis sample utilising compassion-focused self-help. The study aimed to address questions about recruitment, attrition, acceptability and effectiveness. The primary outcome of interest was external shame. Both self-help interventions significantly lowered external shame with small effects observed (d = .20). The interventions had high acceptability but attrition was high at 30%.

As an alternative to the Fibonacci heap, and a variation of the 2-3 heap data structure by Tadao Takaoka, this research presents the 3-4 heap data structure. The aim is to prove that the 3-4 heap, like its counter-part 2-3 heap, also supports n insert, n delete-min, and m decrease-key operations, in O(m + nlog n) time. Many performance tests were carried out during this research comparing the 3-4 heap against the 2-3 heap and for a narrow set of circumstances the 3-4 heap outperformed the 2-3 heap. The 2-3 heap has got a structure based on dimensions which are rigid using ternary linking and this path is made up of three nodes linked together to form a trunk, and the trunk is permitted to shrink by one. If further shrinkage is required then an adjustment is made by moving a few nodes from nearby positions to ensure the heaps rigid dimensions are retained. Should this no longer be the case, then the adjustment will trigger a make-up event, which propagates to higher dimensions, and requires amortised analysis. To aid amortised analysis, the trunk is given a measurement value called potential and this is the number of comparisons required to place each node into its correct position in ascending order using linear search. The divergence of the 3-4 heap from the 2-3 heap is that the trunk maximum is increased by one to four and is still permitted to shrink by one. This modified data structure will have a wide range of applications as the data storage mechanism used by graph algorithms such as Dijkstra's 'Single Source Shortest Path'.

The aim of this thesis is to explore the infertile individual's use of the Internet and issues surrounding the debate on whether the Internet proves to be a useful tool or one that hinders healthcare. This was achieved by conducting a total of five studies that take a mixed methods and pragmatic approach to answering the overarching questions of the project. The first study explores the strengths and weaknesses of using the Internet for health. The aim of this is to investigate the reasons why people use the Internet, the frequency of use and importantly why it has become a tool in healthcare. The data was provided by four focus groups and was analysed using thematic analysis. The second study aims to extend this investigation to a wider population and to explore the attitudes of individuals toward ehealth by use of a questionnaire. The third study explores the function and impact of language on infertility and fertility website homepages by analysing the pages using discourse analysis. The fourth study then investigates the usability of these websites by analysing eye movements across the pages, responses to the system usability scale and by individual interviews. The final study in this thesis takes the issues of Internet use for infertile individuals further. It explores the experiential accounts of four women with an infertility diagnosis, who regularly use the Internet. It uses narrative analysis to explore the reasons for using the Internet, what they have gained from it and the impact that it has had on their lives. This thesis has identified that patient identity is changing and that this is aided by access to ehealth information. Participants were attracted to the Internet because of its immediacy, its convenience and because enables them to make informed decisions by accessing both medical information and sharing experiences with other infertile individuals.

The purpose of this case study was to examine the perceived benefits, economic and personal, attributable to the attainment of higher levels of education as sought by displaced employees from the Levi Strauss Johnson City, Tennessee plant that was closed in 1999. Data was collected through personal interviews, focus group meetings and a standardized questionnaire with a total of 18 participants. All of the participants had successfully completed an Associates degree program at Northeast State Community College. They ranged in ages from 33 to 60 and had worked at Levi Strauss’s between 7 and 27 years. All of the meetings were tape-recorded and the contents of these tapes were transcribed and analyzed using Glaser and Strauss’s (1967) constant comparative method. The primary motivational factor that guided them in their pursuit of additional training and education was to provide them with the skills necessary to broaden their opportunities to secure work in an industry other than factory work. While exploring the ways in which they made their decisions as to what academic fields of study that they were going to pursue, shortcomings in career and academic advisement emerged. As new adult learners, discussions detailing their fears and apprehensions about returning to school evolved and suggestions were provided to ease this transition for other displaced workers who might choose to follow the path to higher education. The perceived benefits that evolved from their experience included: an elevated sense of self confidence and personal pride; improved relationships with parents and children based on a heightened level of respect; the confidence and ability to better direct and guide their children’s futures; an enlightened awareness of the world and their place in it; and new jobs from which they were confident that they could make a difference in the lives of others and find personal satisfaction in the activities that lead to a sense accomplishment. Recommendations for future opportunities included industry and educational relationships to maximize employee opportunities upon displacement; educational enrollment recruitment opportunities designed specifically for displaced adult learners; and methods for increased advisement and counseling for displaced adult learners. Additional qualitative research was also recommended.

Introduction: The mental health needs of adolescents often go unmet, in part due to a high proportion of adolescents choosing not to seek help even when services are available. In order to ensure those in need receive services, there is a need for a better understanding of factors that influence an individual's decision to seek help. The present study aimed to identify the impact of beliefs and attitudes towards seeking and receiving help on professional psychological help seeking intentions in adolescents. A secondary aim was to begin to address the developmental trajectory of such attitudes and the role of one possible influence on their development, parental attitudes. Method: 517 adolescent high school pupils aged 13-18 years and their parents were administered three measures of attitudes and beliefs relating to help seeking: the Barriers to Adolescent Help Seeking-Revised (BASH-B), the Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ATSPPH-B), and the 5 Item Stigma Scale for Receiving Psychological Help (SSRPH) in addition to a measure of willingness to seek help for personal-emotional problems, the General Help Seeking Questionnaire (GHSQ). Results: Regression techniques were used in order to determine the predictive value of the independent variables on willingness to seek help. Holding more positive attitudes towards seeking psychological help and receiving psychological help, holding fewer perceived barriers to help seeking, and having a history of help seeking were related to greater willingness to seek help from formal sources. Holding fewer perceived barriers to help seeking, having a history of help seeking and being female were related to greater willingness to seek help from informal sources. Correlational techniques were employed to determine the relationship between age and the variables of interest. No relationship was found between age and beliefs and attitudes towards seeking and receiving help. An association was found between age and total help seeking intentions for all sources indicating that as age increased, intention to seek help decreased. Age and help seeking intentions for formal sources were negatively correlated, therefore as age increased, help seeing intentions for formal sources decreased. Age and help seeking intentions for informal sources were not associated. There was no association between adolescent children and their parents' attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help, receiving professional psychological help, or level of belief based barriers to help seeking held. Discussion: Results were discussed with references to previous findings in the literature and theoretical implications were highlighted. Strengths and limitations of the study were discussed. Implications of the findings for attitudinal change programmes, and service design and development aimed at increasing help seeking were considered.

I den här undersökningen tittar jag närmare på hur ordet hen används i interaktioner på Twitter. Jag frågar mig i vilka sammanhang och om vem som hen kan användas i dessa konversationer. Vad tycks gynna eller begränsa användningen av hen? Här är jag, först och främst, intresserad av att se på hur olika typer av normer kring kön och sexualitet kan tänkas påverka användningen, och vilka sådana normer som är relevanta i konversationerna. För att göra detta använder jag mig av metoden Membership categorization analysis. Med hjälp av denna metod tittar jag närmare på vilka kategoriseringar som görs relevanta och kopplas till användningen av hen. Detta möjliggör att just komma åt vilka normer som blir aktualiserade, hur de konstrueras och potentiellt påverkar användningen av hen. Därtill vill jag också se vilka möjliga alternativa positioner som hen kan tänkas etablera i relation till normativaköns- och sexualitetsdiskurser. För att fördjupa analysen av normer, kön och sexualitet tar jag min teoretiska utgångspunkt från ett queerteoretiskt perspektiv. Särskilt använder jag mig av performativitet, och det normativa ramverket den heterosexuella matrisen, som viktiga begrepp i uppsatsen för att förståhur olika köns- och sexualitetsnormer skapas och återskapas i interaktion, samt hur dessa normer påverkar möjligheterna att använda hen i konversationerna. I analysen presenterar jag två huvudgrupper som representerar olika övergripande användningsområden för hen som jag identifierat utifrån mitt material. Den ena gruppen består av användningar där hen används för att inte göra kön relevant i konversationen, och den andra är användningar där hen kan användas för att utmana eller ifrågasätta normativa föreställningar om, och beskrivningar av, kön och sexualitet. I den första gruppen är också den normkritiska aspekten av hen mer begränsad, medan den i den andra gruppen är mer central och utmanarflera olika typer av könsrelaterade normer. Ett övergripande resultat är således att hen, beroende på samtalskontexten både kan begränsasav olika könsnormer, och innebära möjligheten att dessa normer utmanas. En ytterligare aspekt som tycks begränsa möjligheten att använda hen är huruvida den som omnämns med detta ord har en relationell närhet till personen som använder ordet. I de mer nära relationerna tenderar könande pronomen att användas och tvärtom kan i stället hen användas för att benämna de personer som inte framträder med samma närhet till personen som gör referensen.

In recent years, due to growing environmental awareness, considerable attention has been given to the development and production of natural fibre reinforced polymer (both thermoset and thermoplastic) composites. The main objective of this study was to reinforce epoxy and polylactic acid (PLA) with hemp fibre to produce improved composites by optimising the fibre treatment methods, composite processing methods, and fibre/matrix interfacial bonding. An investigation was conducted to obtain a suitable fibre alkali treatment method to: (i) remove non-cellulosic fibre components such as lignin (sensitive to ultra violet (UV) radiation) and hemicelluloses (sensitive to moisture) to improve long term composites stability (ii) roughen fibre surface to obtain mechanical interlocking with matrices (iii)expose cellulose hydroxyl groups to obtain hydrogen and covalent bonding with matrices (iv) separate the fibres from their fibre bundles to make the fibre surface available for bonding with matrices (v) retain tensile strength by keeping fibre damage to a minimum level and (vi) increase crystalline cellulose by better packing of cellulose chains to enhance the thermal stability of the fibres. An empirical model was developed for fibre tensile strength (TS) obtained with different treatment conditions (different sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulphite (Na2SO3) concentrations, treatment temperatures, and digestion times) by a partial factorial design. Upon analysis of the alkali fibre treatments by single fibre tensile testing (SFTT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), zeta potential measurements, differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), lignin analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, a treatment consisting of 5 wt% NaOH and 2 wt% Na2SO3 concentrations, with a treatment temperature of 120oC and a digestion time of 60 minutes, was found to give the best combination of the required properties. This alkali treatment produced fibres with an average TS and Young's modulus (YM) of 463 MPa and 33 GPa respectively. The fibres obtained with the optimised alkali treatment were further treated with acetic anhydride and phenyltrimethoxy silane. However, acetylated and silane treated fibres were not found to give overall performance improvement. Cure kinetics of the neat epoxy (NE) and 40 wt% untreated fibre/epoxy (UTFE) composites were studied and it was found that the addition of fibres into epoxy resin increased the reaction rate and decreased the curing time. An increase in the nucleophilic activity of the amine groups in the presence of fibres is believed to have increased the reaction rate of the fibre/epoxy resin system and hence reduced the activation energies compared to NE. The highest interfacial shear strength (IFSS) value for alkali treated fibre/epoxy (ATFE) samples was 5.2 MPa which was larger than the highest value of 2.7 MPa for UTFE samples supporting that there was a stronger interface between alkali treated fibre and epoxy resin. The best fibre/epoxy bonding was found for an epoxy to curing agent ratio of 1:1 (E1C1) followed by epoxy to curing agent ratios of 1:1.2 (E1C1.2), 1: 0.8 (E1C0.8), and finally for 1:0.6 (E1C0.6). Long and short fibre reinforced epoxy composites were produced with various processing conditions using vacuum bag and compression moulding. A 65 wt% untreated long fibre/epoxy (UTLFE) composite produced by compression moulding at 70oC with a TS of 165 MPa, YM of 17 GPa, flexural strength of 180 MPa, flexural modulus of 10.1 GPa, impact energy (IE) of 14.5 kJ/m2, and fracture toughness (KIc) of 5 MPa.m1/2 was found to be the best in contrast to the trend of increased IFSS for ATFE samples. This is considered to be due to stress concentration as a result of increased fibre/fibre contact with the increased fibre content in the ATFE composites compared to the UTFE composites. Hygrothermal ageing of 65 wt% untreated and alkali treated long and short fibre/epoxy composites (produced by curing at 70oC) showed that long fibre/epoxy composites were more resistant than short fibre/epoxy composites and ATFE composites were more resistant than UTFE composites towards hygrothermal ageing environments as revealed from diffusion coefficients and tensile, flexural, impact, fracture toughness, SEM, TGA, and WAXRD test results. Accelerated ageing of 65 wt% UTLFE and alkali treated long fibre/epoxy (ATLFE) composites (produced by curing at 70oC) showed that ATLFE composites were more resistant than UTLFE composites towards hygrothermal ageing environments as revealed from tensile, flexural, impact, KIc, SEM, TGA, WAXRD, FTIR test results. IFSS obtained with untreated fibre/PLA (UFPLA) and alkali treated fibre/PLA (ATPLA) samples showed that ATPLA samples had greater IFSS than that of UFPLA samples. The increase in the formation of hydrogen bonding and mechanical interlocking of the alkali treated fibres with PLA could be responsible for the increased IFSS for ATPLA system compared to UFPLA system. Long and short fibre reinforced PLA composites were also produced with various processing conditions using compression moulding. A 32 wt% alkali treated long fibre PLA composite produced by film stacking with a TS of 83 MPa, YM of 11 GPa, flexural strength of 143 MPa, flexural modulus of 6.5 GPa, IE of 9 kJ/m2, and KIc of 3 MPa.m1/2 was found to be the best. This could be due to the better bonding of the alkali treated fibres with PLA. The mechanical properties of this composite have been found to be the best compared to the available literature. Hygrothermal and accelerated ageing of 32 wt% untreated and alkali treated long fibre/PLA composites ATPLA composites were more resistant than UFPLA composites towards hygrothermal and accelerated ageing environments as revealed from diffusion coefficients and tensile, flexural, impact, KIc, SEM, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), WAXRD, and FTIR results. Increased potential hydrogen bond formation and mechanical interlocking of the alkali treated fibres with PLA could be responsible for the increased resistance of the ATPLA composites. Based on the present study, it can be said that the performance of natural fibre composites largely depend on fibre properties (e.g. length and orientation), matrix properties (e.g. cure kinetics and crystallinity), fibre treatment and processing methods, and composite processing methods.

Help seeking (HS) is an important resource-management strategy in self-regulated learning (SRL). Although investigations on HS and help avoidance (HA) by first-language or fluent speakers in a single context have been plentiful, not enough is known about the impact of language and culture on second-language learners’ HS/HA across contexts. This study aimed to fill this knowledge gap by employing a case study design to produce holistic understanding about the dynamic and complex HS phenomenon in natural settings. The study was grounded in a sociocultural model of strategic HS in context within an SRL model. I adopted a comparative multiple-case design to examine the HS/HA of 9 secondary ESL students simultaneously enrolled in ESL and Humanities classes. Multiple sources of data were collected to construct rich profiles of individuals’ HS across classrooms. Cross-case patterns suggested important implications for practice and theory. For example, to facilitate student use of adaptive HS strategies, teachers need to foster students’ perceptions of HS benefits, diminish HS deterrents in classrooms, establish classroom norms favorable for HS, and provide help in ways that scaffold learning based on students’ current levels of knowledge and understanding. Theoretically, this study evidenced the potential utility of a sociocultural model that represents the complexity of factors involved in self-regulated learning and HS by students who are situated within socioculturally- and historically-delimited settings.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors that may affect counseling psychology doctoral students' tendencies to seek professional psychological help for their personal problems. The study had the following specific goals: (a) to identify psychology students' reasons for seeking professional help, (b) to identify psychology students' reasons for hesitating to seek professional help, (c) to determine the incidence of personal distress among psychology students, (d) to determine the incidence of professional psychological help seeking, and (e) to begin to examine the impact that training environments have on the development of psychologists' attitudes toward seeking personal psychotherapy.The population of this study was doctoral students in APA-approved programs in Counseling Psychology during their internship phase of training. The sample consisted of 178 pre-doctoral interns. Students were mailed a survey developed by the researcher. The survey instrument consisted of questions about psychological problems experienced and the extent to which students had sought or would seek help for these problems. The survey also addressed students' perceptions about whether or not personal help seeking was advocated in their training programs and extent to which the topic of personal psychotherapy was included in their graduate curriculum.Data were analyzed using a combination of qualitative and quantitative procedures. Grounded theory analysis techniques, frequency distributions and multiple regression analyses were utilized.The study reveals that the decision to seek help is a complex one. While most students had sought or would be willing to seek help in the future, many would hesitate to do so. Conclusions drawn are that psychologists (in training) may prefer to turn to professional help as a last resort, and that there are barriers that prevent trainees from obtaining psychological services including finances, availability of therapists, and concerns about confidentiality. Trainees who have had positive experiences with therapy or who value it for personal or professional growth are more likely to seek help. Trainees who perceive that help seeking is normative among their peers are also more likely to seek help. The topic of "psychologists' seeking help for themselves" is not consistently addressed as a part of counseling psychologists' formal training.

Envy is an other-oriented but negative emotion; no research has examined the influence of envy on prosocial behavior. Study 1 examined whether envy and gratitude would promote or inhibit prosocial behavior. I hypothesized that envy would result in less helping behavior than a neutral condition, whereas gratitude would increase helping behavior. Results supported the hypothesis that envy inhibits prosocial behavior. There was not enough evidence to suggest that gratitude promoted helping. Study 2 examined how envy and gratitude affected prosocial behavior when participants were given the choice to help or harm others. I hypothesized that experiencing envy would result in greater likelihood of engaging in harmful behavior, but that gratitude would promote more helpful behavior, even when it meant a less positive outcome for participants. The hypothesis that envy increases harming behavior was supported, while there was not enough evidence to suggest that gratitude promoted helping behavior in this scenario.

As humans we have a remarkable capacity to sacrifice for the future, and an equally remarkable capacity to shortchange it, leaving our future selves to pay the price. The research in this dissertation suggests that sacrifice for the future (patience) may be governed by the same rules that govern sacrifice for others (altruism). Studies found that (1) patience was positively correlated with altruism, and (2) patience was positively correlated with empathic accuracy, a measure that predicted altruism. A third set of studies found that (3) a pervasive influence on altruism--group membership--also influenced patience. Participants who expected to switch groups in the future felt less connected to their future selves and left more than twice as much unpleasant work to the future. This research provides converging support for the hypothesis that common factors promote altruism and patience, suggesting that we may be able to draw on the decades of research studying kindness toward others to promote a little more kindness toward our future selves.

The first purpose was to develop a diagnostic test to investigate new anchoring and bridging analogies. Second one was to compare the effects of bridging analogies based instruction (BABI) versus traditional teaching method (TTM) on sophomore students&rsquo
misconceptions in Newton&rsquo
s Third Law (NTL). An Anchoring Analogy Diagnostic Test (AADT), Newton&rsquo
s Third Law Misconception Test (NTLMT), and Attitude Scale toward Newton&rsquo
s Third Law (ASNTL) were used as measuring tools. Unlike single analogies in each step as used in literature, the researcher introduced the group concept and developed the new style of concept diagrams after the first part. The second part was conducted with 308 students in the same department of the same public universities of previous year sample in 2006-2007. In the study, the instructors administered the NTLMT and ASNTL as a pretest. One instructor had randomly assigned one control and one experimental group, while the other instructor (researcher) had randomly assigned two groups. Experimental groups were instructed by the BABI while control groups were instructed by the TTM. After three-week treatment period, the same tests were given as posttests to both groups. The first part analyzed by using both Excel and SPSS indicated that the AADT was effective in diagnosing anchoring analogies, bridging analogies, and target cases. It was also easy to develop the new style of concept diagrams. The second part were analyzed by using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). According to the results, the BABI significantly remediate students&rsquo
misconceptions in the NTL with respect to the TTM. However, the BABI showed no significant effect on students&rsquo
attitudes toward the NTL with respect to the TTM.

Accurate alias analysis is critical for optimizing/parallelizing compilers that support languages with pointers. Efficient techniques have been developed to calculate aliases introduced by pointers to named memory locations (typically on the stack). However, practical and effective techniques for detection of aliases induced by heap-based dynamic data structures, have yet to be developed.
In this thesis, we present a new and practical approach for analyzing the alias properties of heap data structures. The important features of our approach include: (i) we analyze heap-directed pointers after resolving the points-to relationships of stack-directed pointers, (ii) we use a storeless model and estimate the heap structure by abstracting the relationships between heap-directed pointers, and not by explicitly abstracting the heap as a graph, and (iii) we employ a hierarchical approach and design different abstractions to solve the problem at different levels of complexity.
We present a hierarchy of three practical abstractions for analyzing heap data structures, namely connection, direction and interference matrix abstractions. These abstractions respectively capture the following boolean relationships between any two given heap-directed pointers: (i) if they can point to the same heap data structure, (ii) if an access path exists between the heap objects they point to, and (iii) if they can access a common heap object. Connection matrix information helps detect pointer accesses to completely disjoint data structures. The other two abstractions work together to identify if the given program builds tree-like or dag-like structures.
We have implemented context-sensitive interprocedural analyses for these abstractions in the framework of the McCAT C compiler. For each abstraction, we first present basic analysis rules applicable to any language that supports pointers. We then describe C specific features of the analyses. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
