American marten are associated with extensive and unfragmented late seral forest habitats, and are often considered to be particularly vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation. This chapter evaluates the impact of road building and timber harvest on habitat suitability for marten in northern Idaho, USA, using an empirically derived, multi-scale habitat suitability model, reconstructing key predictor variables (elevation, forest type, road density, canopy cover, landscape fragmentation and the extensiveness of late seral forest in the landscape) as they appear to have existed prior to harvest, and applying the model to both current and pre-harvest conditions. Calculating changes in the extent and pattern of habitat in the landscape indicate that timber harvest and road construction together reduced marten habitat quality considerably across the study area, which is likely responsible for current patterns of reduced detection rates and lower genetic diversity in areas that have experienced the largest amounts of habitat loss.

The essay that forms the core of this book is an attempt to understand the developments that have occurred in Orthodox Jewry in America in the last seventy years, and to analyse their implications. The prime change is what is often described as ‘the swing to the right’, a marked increase in ritual stringency, a rupture in patterns of behaviour that has had major consequences not only for Jewish society but also for the nature of Jewish spirituality. For the book's author, the key feature at the root of this change is that, as a result of migration to the ‘New Worlds’ of England, the United States, and Israel and acculturation to its new surroundings, American Jewry—indeed, much of the Jewish world—had to reconstruct religious practice from normative texts: observance could no longer be transmitted mimetically, on the basis of practices observed in home and street. In consequence, behaviour once governed by habit is now governed by rule. This new edition allows the author to deal with criticisms raised since the essay, long established as a classic in the field, was originally published, and enables readers to gain a fuller perspective on a topic central to today's Jewish world and its development.

Should development banks (DBs) be regulated? Is Basel regulation a suitable framework for them? With regard to risk management, do DBs entail different characteristics from private banks? What are the main challenges posed by the new Basel regulations for DBs? This chapter explores these largely unexplored questions and the habitual responses to them. The answers are built upon a reconstruction of the theoretical arguments in favour of financial regulation; a historical description of the evolution of the Basel Agreements framework; a few analytical generalizations built upon an exploratory case study; and a review of the literature on risk management practices in DBs as well as interviews with risk management specialists and Brazilian regulatory agencies.

Dance archives, like other archives, store documents of past events. They are particular in that the documents they store document dances or choreographies, which are also stored in the memories of the dance artists involved. This chapter examines the relations between documents of dances and bodily movement memories by tracing the processes of two dance pieces that dealt with these issues in very different ways. The first is the author’s reconstruction of Dore Hoyer’s dance cycle Affectos Humanos, for which a dance archive provided film and other documents of this cycle. The second piece is a duet the author made with his father, in which he experienced the reality of movement patterns and habitual postures that get stored in one body and passed on to the next through imitation. The dance archive is a particularly productive place to explore und understand the relations between document, body, and movement.

One of the most fascinating facets of eDNA lies in the possibility of exploiting it to reconstruct past environments in paleoecology and in archaeology. Chapter 15, entitled “Paleoenvironments,” reviews different pioneer studies that scrutinized ancient eDNA extracted from different substrates (e.g., lake sediments, permafrost, or archaeological midden material), to address a wide range of questions. These include, for example, the taxonomic identification of archaeological fish bones in Madagascar from bulk samples, the reconstruction of past plant communities based on the large-scale analysis of permafrost samples, or the assessment of past human diet in Greenland based on midden material. Midden material from archaeological sites represents a valuable source of information for tracking food habits of ancient human communities. It also provides information about the surrounding biodiversity, using humans as biodiversity samplers, which is also explored here.

In the decades that have followed World War II, science and technology have come to play ever more central roles in the lives and life worlds of Europeans. Indeed, in the twenty-first century there is very little that goes on in Europe without there being at least some influence from science and technology. Europe has become a place where scientific ‘facts’ and technical ‘artifacts’ permeate our existence. They have infiltrated our languages, altered our behaviour, changed our habits, and, perhaps most fundamentally, imposed their instrumental logic – what philosophers call technological rationality – on our social interaction and the ways in which we communicate with one another. The advent of industrialisation led to the formation of a number of new scientific and engineering fields – thermodynamics, biochemistry, public health, electrical engineering, city planning, among others – and new forms of higher education and communication. This article focuses on science and technology in postwar Europe, and looks at postwar reconstruction, reform, and the age of commercialisation.

In this book, Ellen Swift uses design theory, previously neglected in Roman archaeology, to investigate Roman artifacts in a new way, making a significant contribution to both Roman social history and our understanding of the relationships that exist between artefacts and people. Based on extensive data collection and the close study of artefacts from museum collections and archives, the book examines the relationship between artefacts, everyday behavior, and experience. The concept of "affordances"--features of an artefact that make possible, and incline users towards, particular uses for functional artifacts--is an important one for the approach taken. This concept is carefully evaluated by considering affordances in relation to other sources of evidence, such as use--wear, archaeological context, the end--products resulting from artifact use, and experimental reconstruction. Artifact types explored in the case studies include locks and keys, pens, shears, glass vessels, dice, boxes, and finger-rings, using material mainly drawn from the north-western Roman provinces, with some material also from Roman Egypt. The book then considers how we can use artefacts to understand particular aspects of Roman behavior and experience, including discrepant experiences according to factors such as age, social position, and left- or right-handedness, which are fostered through artifact design. The relationship between production and users of artifacts is also explored, investigating what particular production methods make possible in terms of user experience, and also examining production constraints that have unintended consequences for users. The book examines topics such as the perceived agency of objects, differences in social practice across the provinces, cultural change and development in daily practice, and the persistence of tradition and social convention. It shows that design intentions, everyday habits of use, and the constraints of production processes each contribute to the reproduction and transformation of material culture.
