Abstract The water channels aquaporins mediate a variety of immune functions. We previously demonstrated that aquaporin 4 (AQP4) is expressed by CD4 and CD8 T cells and blockade of AQP4 with small molecule inhibitor AER-270/271 significantly prolongs survival of heart allografts in two robust models of rejection. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of AQP4 blockade on T cells. Administration of AER-271 into naïve non-transplanted mice (250 μg i.p. every 6 h on d. 0–4) decreased numbers of circulating CD4 and CD8 T cells, but not B cells, by >90%, compared to untreated controls. The T cell frequencies and numbers in the secondary lymphoid organs (SLOs) were not significantly affected by AER-271, suggesting the lack of circulating T cells is not due to systemic depletion but rather to altered T cell trafficking. The effect of AER-271 treatment was transient, as circulating T cell numbers returned to pretreatment levels by d 21. AER-271 treated animals promptly rejected heart allografts transplanted 24 d after treatment cessation (MST 6 d, n=4). We next tested the effects of AQP4 blockade on Sphingosine-1 Phosphate Receptor 1 (S1PR1), a key mediator of T cell trafficking. S1PR1 mRNA expression was reduced in isolated mouse spleen T cells within 3 h of in vitro incubation with AER-270. Decreased S1PR1 mRNA expression translated into altered chemotaxis, as AER-270 reduced T cell migration toward S1PR1 ligand, Sphingosine-1 Phosphate (S1P), in a transwell system. Our data suggest that AER-270/271 treatment results in altered S1PR1 transcription thus changing T cell trafficking and prolonging allograft survival. Therefore, AQP4 blockade may be an attractive therapeutic strategy in transplantation and other immune-mediated diseases.

In vitro-grown shoots of `Doyenne d'Hiver' pear (Pyrus communis L.) were maintained for 7 days on 16-h photoperiods at photosynthetic photon fluxes (PPF) of 90, 180 or 270 μmol·m-2·s-1 and irradiated 6 h per day midway through the photoperiod at 0.2 (-UV-B) or 12.0 (+UV-B) kJ·m-2·d-1 of biologically effective ultraviolet-B (UV-BBE) radiation. Increased ethylene production from UV-BBE-treated shoots as compared to the control was recorded after 24 h in cultures grown under 90 and 180 μmol·m-2·s-1 and after 72 h in shoots grown under 270 μmol·m-2·s-1; PPF level had little effect on amount of ethylene evolved. Proliferation was highest at 270 μmol·m-2·s-1, but UV-BBE decreased proliferation and increased apical necrosis. UV-BBE treatment increased lipid peroxidation after 24 h based on malondialdehyde (MDA) determination, but thereafter had no consistent effect on MDA. UV-BBE exposure slightly decreased the monogalactosyldiacylglycerol/digalactosyldiacylglycerol ratio during the initial 24 h, showing an effect on chloroplast membranes.

ABSTRACT We investigate the potential for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to detect and characterize the atmospheres of the sub-Neptunian exoplanets in the TOI-270 system. Sub-Neptunes are considered more likely to be water worlds than gas dwarfs. We model their atmospheres using three atmospheric compositions – two examples of hydrogen-dominated atmospheres and a water-dominated atmosphere. We then simulate the infrared transmission spectra of these atmospheres for JWST instrument modes optimized for transit observation of exoplanet atmospheres: NIRISS, NIRSpec, and MIRI. We then predict the observability of each exoplanet’s atmosphere. TOI-270c and d are excellent targets for detecting atmospheres with JWST transmission spectroscopy, requiring only 1 transit observation with NIRISS, NIRSpec, and MIRI; higher signal-to-noise ratio can be obtained for a clear H-rich atmosphere. Fewer than three transits with NIRISS and NIRSpec may be enough to reveal molecular features. Water-dominated atmospheres require more transits. Water spectral features in water-dominated atmospheres may be detectable with NIRISS in two or three transits. We find that the detection of spectral features in a cloudy, H-rich atmosphere does not require integrations as long as those required for the water-dominated atmosphere, which is consistent with the differences in atmospheric mean molecular weight. TOI-270c and d could be prime targets for JWST transit observations of sub-Neptune atmospheres. These results provide useful predictions for observers who may propose to use JWST to detect and characterize the TOI-270 planet atmospheres.

The experiment with polarized deuteron beam was performed at energies 140, 200 and 270 MeV at RIKEN, Japan, in December 2000. The high-momentum structure of the 3 He , 3 H and deuteron was investigated. For this purpose the angular dependence of the tensor and vector analyzing powers were measured for the reactions d + d →3 H + p and d + d →3 He + n . In this report the results on the tensor Axx, Ayy and vector Ay analyzing powers at 270 MeV are presented.

The frequent occurrence of marine dinoflagellates producing palytoxin (PLTX) or okadaic acid (OA) raises concern for the possible co-presence of these toxins in seafood, leading to additive or synergistic adverse effects in consumers. Thus, the acute oral toxicity of PLTX and OA association was evaluated in mice: groups of eight female CD-1 mice were administered by gavage with combined doses of PLTX (30, 90 or 270 μg/kg) and OA (370 μg/kg), or with each individual toxin, recording signs up to 24 h (five mice) and 14 days (three mice). Lethal effects occurred only after PLTX (90 or 270 μg/kg) exposure, alone or combined with OA, also during the 14-day recovery. PLTX induced scratching, piloerection, abdominal swelling, muscle spasms, paralysis and dyspnea, which increased in frequency or duration when co-administered with OA. The latter induced only diarrhea. At 24 h, PLTX (90 or 270 μg/kg) and OA caused wall redness in the small intestine or pale fluid accumulation in its lumen, respectively. These effects co-occurred in mice co-exposed to PLTX (90 or 270 μg/kg) and OA, and were associated with slight ulcers and inflammation at forestomach. PLTX (270 μg/kg alone or 90 μg/kg associated with OA) also decreased the liver/body weight ratio, reducing hepatocyte glycogen (270 μg/kg, alone or combined with OA). No alterations were recorded in surviving mice after 14 days. Overall, the study suggests additive effects of PLTX and OA that should be considered for their risk assessment as seafood contaminants.

Hydroisomerization of Iraqi light naphtha was studied on prepared Ni-Pt/H-mordenite catalyst at a temperature range of 220-300°C, hydrogen to hydrocarbon molar ratio of 3.7, liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) 1 hr-1 and at atmospheric pressure. The result shows that the hydrisomerization of light naphtha increases with the increase in reaction temperature at constant LHSV. However, above 270 0C the isomers formation decreases and the reaction is shifted towards the hydrocracking reaction, a higher octane number of naphtha was formed at 270 °C.

The previously developed TriA-X polyimide resin, consisting of pyromellitic dianhydride/2-phenyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether; 9,9-bis(4-aminophenyl)fluorene/4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride (PEPA), was exposed for 3000 h to air at 180, 240, and 270°C or a vacuum environment at 270°C, in order to study its long-term thermal stability. The weight loss and dimensional changes were measured. Elemental analysis was also conducted in order to estimate the TriA-X degradation process. The TriA-X exhibited excellent thermal stability at 180°C and a very small degree of degradation at 240°C, with the degradation becoming significant at 270°C. The latter was primarily dominated by the oxidation of a chain-extension moiety formed by the cure reaction of the end-cap PEPA.

Summary Several species of the sheat nematodes, Hemicycliophora spp., have been known to cause significant damage to agricultural crops, including Hemicycliophora arenaria, H. conida, H. parvana, H. poranga, H. similis, and H. typica. Remarkably, our study reported on the presence of H. poranga for the first time in Vietnam. This species was found on 83.33% of the total samples with an average density of 270 individuals/100ml of soil (positive samples). In this study, the Vietnamese population of H. poranga was characterized based on both morphology and molecular characterization of D2-D3 expansion segment of 28S rRNA sequence. Besides, a molecular phylogenetic tree of the genus Hemicycliophora was also provided.

Background radiation information is a viable tool for mitigating negative influence of the Terrestrial Gamma Radiation Dose rate (TGRD) on humans and their livelihood, Terrestrial gamma radiation plays significant role in background radiation which largely depends on the type of soil and fundamental geological pattern in a location. Several In situ evaluation of gamma radiation dose of the varied geological formations were performed in the area. Handheld Geiger Muller (GM) radiation survey meter (RADOS RDS-31) was used in evaluating the terrestrial gamma radiation dose while one way (ANOVA) variance analysis was employed to determine and compare the TGRD at different geological and soil formations. The external radiation dose which ranges from 15 - 270 nGy/h having an overall mean value of 91.95635 nGy/h throughout the geological formations was assessed where the mean value exceeded the global limit of 59 nGyh−1 by 200%, furthermore, external gamma radiation dose rates ranging from 40 to 270 nGy/h with overall mean value of 120.0893 nGy/h. TGRD across the existing soil types was also evaluated. It was found out that the Dange formation has highest mean TGRD value of 161.1111 nGyh−1 . The assessment reveals significant influence of geological formation and soil type formation on the evaluated TGRD rates of Dange Formation.

The thermal isomerization reaction of isopimaric acid was studied by a treatment at different temperature of 250 °C, 260 °C and 270 °C for 1-5 h under the protection of nitrogen. The isomerization mechanism of isopimaric acid was illuminated. Isopimaric acid was remarkably isomerized to 8, 15-isopimaric acid and sandaracopimaric acid, the higher thermal treatment temperature combined with longer thermal treatment time, the faster isomerization rate of isopimaric acid was observed. It was found that the isomerization rate of isopimaric acid towards 8, 15-isopimaric acid was faster than to sandaracopimaric acid. The decomposition reaction of pimaric-type acids occurred slightly in conditions of 250 ~ 270 °C.

N tau-methylimidazole acetic acid (N tau-MIAA) is the principal urinary metabolite of histamine. The basal urinary excretion rate of N tau-MIAA was determined as 0.117 +/- 0.008 (SE) mg/h, with a renal clearance for N tau-MIAA of 273 +/- 27 ml/min implying active secretion. After subpharmacological infusion of histamine (50 ng.kg-1.min-1 over 2 h) in five volunteers that increased plasma histamine from 0.28 +/- 0.04 to 0.71 +/- 0.15 ng/ml, urinary excretion of N tau-MIAA over 8 h was increased by less than 17% compared with a control saline infusion. Urinary N tau-MIAA excretion in normal controls (273 +/- 14 micrograms/mmol creatinine) was similar to that observed in patients with severe acute asthma (253 +/- 22 micrograms/mmol), antigen-induced bronchoconstriction (269 +/- 21 micrograms/mmol), seasonal allergic rhinitis (304 +/- 31 micrograms/mmol), and clinically stable bronchiectasis (270 +/- 22 micrograms/mmol). In contrast, large increases in metabolite excretion (greater than 7,000 micrograms/mmol creatinine) were observed in a patient with systemic mastocytosis where very high plasma histamine levels were recorded (greater than 500 ng/ml) and marked systemic hemodynamic effects occurred. We conclude that urinary N tau-MIAA will only be increased in pathologies where sustained hyperhistaminemia occurs and that increased local histamine production in the lung or the upper airway does not cause a measurable change in the basal urinary excretion of this metabolite.

The effect of roughage species on fecal alkane recoveries (the proportion of ingested alkane recovered in feces) and the effect of sample drying treatment on alkane concentrations in samples of dietary components and feces were studied in 2 experiments conducted with sheep. In experiment 1, 6 single-species diets (2 different batches of lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay, Phalaris aquatica hay, oaten straw, wheaten straw, Trifolium subterraneum hay) were fed to 6 animals each in a crossover design. A further 3 animals were fed a mixed diet of Trifolium subterraneum and beeswax-labelled cottonseed meal. In experiment 2, fecal samples from sheep fed 4 different mixtures of pelleted lucerne and ground wheat grain (lucerne : wheat 360 : 270 g/day; 360 : 450 g/day; 600 : 270 g/day; 600 : 450 g/day; 4 animals per diet), a fixed amount (270 g/day) of which was labelled with beeswax, were dried in 1 of 3 ways: freeze drying, oven drying at 65°C for 48 h or oven drying at 105°C for 24 h. Differences in fecal alkane recoveries between various roughage species were not statistically significant, due in part to high between-animal variation in recovery. The fecal recovery of odd-chain alkanes increased in a curvilinear manner with carbon-chain length. The fecal recoveries of even-chain alkanes were highly variable, due to their low concentrations, and also differed from those expected given the recoveries of the adjacent odd-chain alkanes. The results indicate that oven drying fecal samples at 65°C for 48 h could replace freeze drying, but drying at 105°C significantly reduced fecal alkane concentrations. Further studies are necessary to investigate the effect of drying treatment on the alkane concentration in fresh roughages.

SUMMARY After discussion of several methodological issues, a simpfe method for evaluating nonbinary wordlist comparisons probabilistically is introduced, and the data of Joseph H. Greenberg's "Amerind Etymological Dictionary" (1987: 181-270) are evaluated by that method. It is found that the similarities Green-berg has adduced as evidence for the genetic unity of 'Amerind' fall within the range to be expected by chance alone, and concluded that Greenberg's method of 'multilateral comparison' is utterly unreliable, as well-informed specialists have long claimed. RÉSUMÉ Suivant une discussion de plusieurs questions methodologiques, l'auteur introduit une methode simple pour 1'evaluation probabilistique des listes de mots non binaires de comparaison. Ensuite les donnees tirees du 'dictionnaire etymologique amerindien' de Joseph H. Greenberg (1987:181-270) sont eva-luees a la base de cette methode. Le resultat des calculs demontre que les simi-larites apportees par Greenberg comme preuve pour l'unite genetique de 1''Amerind' tombe a l'interieur de la gamme a laquelle on pourrait s'attendre a la base du hasard seulement. La conclusion de l'auteur est que la methode de 'comparaison multilaterale' de Greenberg n'est absolument pas fiable, comme les specialistes bien-informes des langues amerindiennes I'avaient deja note. Danach werden Daten bewertet, die Joseph H. Greenbergs "Amerind Etymological Dictionary" (1987:181-270) entnommen sind. Das Ergebnis ist, daß die Ahnlichkeiten, die Greenberg als Nachweis für die genetische Einheit einer 'Amerind'-Grundsprache heran-gefuhrt hat, sich durchaus innerhalb der Breite dessen befinden, was man aus bloßem Zufall erwarten kann. Der Autor kommt zum SchluB, daB Greenbergs Methode eines 'multilateralen Vergleichs' vollkommen unzuverlassig ist, wie wohlinformierte Spezialisten von Indianersprachen schon seit langem behaup-tet haben.

A 5kg motorized Ginger rhizome (Zingiber Officinale Roscoe) peeling machine was designed, developed and tested. Three moisture contents (70%, 75% and 80% wb), three feed rates (54 kg/h, 68 kg/h and 73 kg/h) and three peeling speeds (230 rpm, 270 rpm and 300 rpm) were used for the performance evaluation of the machine. A 3 × 3 × 3 factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design (RCBD); replicated two times was used to study the effects and interactions of the three factors (moisture content, feed rates and peeling speed) on the performance parameters (peeling efficiency, peeling capacity and percent damage). Relationship between performance parameters and the influencing factors were determined using multilevel factorial design and response surface methodology for the graphical analyses. The study showed that peeling efficiency increased from 82.3% to 88.5% with an increase in moisture content from 70% to 80%, a decrease in feed rate from 73 kg/h to 54 kg/h and an increase in peeling speed from 230 rpm to 300 rpm. Peeling capacity increased from 2.4 kg/h to 11.64 kg/h with an increase in moisture content from 70% to 80%, a decrease in feed rate from 73 kg/h to 54 kg/h and an increase in peeling speed from 230 rpmto300 rpm. Percent damage increased from 6.3% to 14.4% with a decrease in moisture content from 80% to 70%, an increase in feed rate from 54 kg/h to 73 kg/h and an increase in peeling speed from 230 rpm to 300 rpm. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) result showed that the interaction of moisture content, feed rate and peeling speed had significant effect on peeling efficiency, peeling capacity and percent damage at p<0.05 level. For a maximum peeling efficiency, peeling capacity and minimum percent damage, an optimum moisture content of 75%, feed rate of 68 kg/h and peeling speed of 270 rpm were recommended for use.

Abstract Background: CheckMate 649, a randomized phase 3 study in advanced GC/GEJC/EAC, showed superior overall survival (OS) and an acceptable safety profile with 1L NIVO + chemo vs chemo, leading to approval in multiple countries. We present exploratory efficacy analyses by baseline tumor mutational burden (TMB) and gene expression signatures (GES) from CheckMate 649. Methods: Whole exome sequencing of baseline tumor tissue and matching blood was performed to derive TMB. TMB-high (H) was defined as ≥ 199 mutations/exome (Chang et al. Mol Diagn Ther 2019). RNA sequencing of baseline tumor tissue was performed to assess GES. GES included a 4-gene inflammatory (inflam) (Lei et al. Clin Cancer Res 2021), a proprietary 12-gene epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), 6-gene angiogenesis (angio) (McDermott et al. Nat Med 2018), and other stroma- and angiogenesis-related signatures. Results: Of 1581 patients (pts) randomized to receive NIVO + chemo or chemo, 685 (43%) were evaluable for TMB (NIVO + chemo 45%, chemo 41%), and 809 (51%) were evaluable for GES (NIVO + chemo 53%, chemo 49%). In pts with PD-ligand (L)1 combined positive score (CPS) ≥ 5, OS benefit with NIVO + chemo vs chemo was seen in TMB-H pts (HR 0.44), which accounted for 10% of this population, and non-TMB-H pts (HR 0.75) (Table). Similar results were observed when excluding MSI-H pts and will be presented. OS benefit was observed across multiple GES subgroups, although low EMT and angio signature tertiles were associated with greater OS benefit (Table). Similar results were observed with other stroma- and angiogenesis-related GES for all randomized pts and pts with PD-L1 CPS &lt; 5 which will be presented. Conclusions: Although the magnitude of benefit was higher in TMB-H and EMT/angio-low pts, OS benefit with NIVO + chemo vs chemo was observed regardless of TMB, inflam, EMT, and angio GES status. Recently three equations for estimating gluconeogenesis in vivo have been proposed, two by J. A. Tayek and J. Katz [ Am. J. Physiol. 270 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 33): E709–E717, 1996, and Am. J. Physiol. 272 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 35): E476–E484, 1997] and one by B. R. Landau, J. Wahren, K. Ekberg, S. F. Previs, D. Yang, and H. Brunengraber [ Am. J. Physiol.274 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 37): E954–E961, 1998]. Both groups estimate gluconeogenesis from cycling of [U-13C]glucose to lactate and back to glucose, detected by mass spectrometry. Landau’s approach is based on analysis of labeled molecules, whereas Tayek and Katz’s is based on labeling of carbon atoms by use of the concept of “molar enrichment,” which weights each mass isotopomer by the number of labeled carbons. We derived an equation very similar to Landau’s using binomial probability. Our analysis demonstrates that the molecular-based approach is correct. Additionally, equations appropriate for 14C studies are not appropriate for 13C studies, because the method used to detect14C, decay of atoms, differs from13C mass isotopomers detected as labeled molecules. We conclude that the molar enrichment carbon-based approach is not useful in the derivation of equations for the polymerization of molecules detected by mass spectrometry of molecules, and we confirm the findings of Landau et al.

The degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye by tungsten oxide (WO3) photocatalyst synthesized by the 200°C conventional-hydrothermal (C-H) and 270 W microwave-hydrothermal (M-H) methods and commercial WO3was studied under UV light irradiation for 360 min. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectrophotometry, and UV visible spectroscopy to determine phase, morphology, vibration mode, and optical property. The BET analysis revealed the specific surface area of 29.74, 37.25, and 33.56 m2/g for the C-H WO3nanoplates, M-H WO3nanoplates, and commercial WO3nanorods, respectively. In this research, the M-H WO3nanoplates have the highest photocatalytic efficiency of 90.07% within 360 min, comparing to the C-H WO3nanoplates and even commercial WO3nanorods.

Many plants of the genus Isodon (Benth.) Kudo from Lamiaceae, such as Isodon serra (IS), Isodon lophanthoides (IL), etc., are widely used as the source of traditional Chinese herbal medicine “Xihuangcao” in Lingnan region of China. The origin of “Xihuangcao” herb is relatively chaotic and germplasm resources are unclear. In the present research, evaluation of genetic diversity and genetic variability in 358 accessions of ‘Xihuangcao’ herb from 33 populations were carried out based on ISSR and SCoT makers. Thirteen ISSR and 8 SCoT markers produced 491 and 272 fragments respectively, of which 99.80% (490) and 99.26% (270) were polymorphic, H=0.1719 I=0.1704 for ISSR and H=0.2057 I=0.3300 for SCoT revealed high genetic diversity. Both genetic differentiation analysis and AMOVA revealed higher variance among the populations than within populations. According to UPGMA and PCoA, the clustering patterns of populations were out of accordance with plant taxonomy or geographic distribution. This study showed that the germplasm resources of “Xihuangcao” had high genetic diversity, which could provide materials for excellent breed screening and core collections developing.

The generation of superoxide by the NADPH oxidase of neutrophils is accompanied by the efflux of H+ ions through a H+ channel. gp91-phox, a protein component of the oxidase, has been shown previously to function as a H+ channel [Henderson, Banting and Chappell (1995) J. Biol. Chem. 270, 5909–5916]. We have constructed a CHO cell line (CHO-N) that expresses an N-terminal fragment of gp91-phox containing the predicted multiple transmembrane domains of the protein. These cells exhibit H+ fluxes in response to an imposed proton motive force and in the presence of arachidonate (to open the channel). The H+ fluxes were indistinguishable from those observed in cells expressing full-length gp91-phox. Therefore the N-terminal 230 amino acids of gp91-phox contain all that is required to function as the NADPH oxidase-associated H+ channel.

Hoevenii jantan dan betina di Desa Langgam dan Tambak Sungai Kampar menggunakan metode survei dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 60 ekor ikan jantan dan 60 ekor ikan betina di masing-masing lokasi penelitian. Ikan H. hoevenii jantan di desa Langgam memiliki kisaran panjang total 118-214 mm dan betina 129-223 mm sedangan kisaran H. hoeveniii jantan pada Desa Tambak 140-231 mm dan betina 130-270 mm. Hasil uji t menunjukkan terdapat beberapa perbedaan antar karakter H. hoevenii jantan dan betina di Desa Langgam dan Tambak yaitu karakter panjang standar, panjang predorsalm panjang preanal, panjang prepelvic, panjang prepectoral, panjang sirip adiposa, panjang duri pectoral, jaral setelah adiposa, lebar kepala, kedalaman kepala, dan diameter mata.

Abstract A 558-h laboratory leaching test (AWPA E-11) was carried out on both commercially and laboratory chromated copper arsenate (CCA) type C-treated southern pine. Arsenic, chromium, and copper concentrations in the leachate collected were examined. Leaching of chromium and copper from CCA-treated wood cubes were nearly undetectable using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy after 174 and 366 h, respectively. Less than 10% of the total chromium in the leachate was present as hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] after leaching for 30 h. Selective ion-exchange chromatography was used to speciate arsenic in the leachate. In the first 270 h, approximately 70–90% of the total arsenic in the leachate was inorganic pentavalent arsenic [As(V)] and 10–30% was inorganic trivalent arsenic [As(III)].

The effect of pretreatment with gibberellin A3 (GA3) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) on the vase life of cut gerbera ‘Minou’ was investigated. Cut gerbera flowers were treated with GA3 and/or CaCl2 for 24 h and then transferred to an antimicrobial solution. Pretreatment with GA3 at 0, 29, 72, 144, and 289 µM delayed the opening of the tubular florets and promoted stem bending due to elongation of the flower stems, which shortened vase life. When cut gerbera was pretreated with 144 µM GA3 in combination with CaCl2 at 90, 180, 270, and 360 mM, stem elongation was suppressed with the increasing concentration of CaCl2. Next, the effect of pretreatment with 144 µM GA3, 270 mM CaCl2, and their combination on the vase life of the cut gerbera was investigated. Combined treatment with GA3 and CaCl2 significantly extended vase life more than GA3 alone and CaCl2 alone. The vase life of the cut gerbera ‘Banana’, ‘Kimsey’, ‘Pinta’, ‘Tim’, and ‘Vivid’ was significantly extended by pretreatment with 144 µM GA3 and 270 mM CaCl2. It was concluded that combined treatment with GA3 and CaCl2 was effective in extending the vase life of the cut gerbera.

This work investigates the potential propagation by seed and cuttings of the Azorean nativeCalluna vulgaris(L.) Hull. for landscape conservation. With that purpose we have performed several germination and cuttings trials, using plant material from wild populations of this species. In the germination trials, we tested the effects of photoperiod length (8 and 16 h), temperature (10, 15, 20, and 20–10°C), seed age (6, 108, and 270 days), temperature of seed storage (4°C and room temperature), and seed surface sterilization on the germination characteristics. In the cuttings trials, we tested the effects of stem cutting type, cultural conditions, cuttings’ harvest month, and rooting substrates on the rooting percentages. The best percentages of germination, 93 and 90%, were obtained with fresh seeds and surface sterilized and sown under an 8 h photoperiod and with temperatures of 10°C or 15°C, respectively; germination after seed storage during 270 days is significantly superior (71%) when seeds are stored at 4°C. The best percentages of rooting were achieved for straight (96%) or heel cuttings (90%) harvested in March, planted on soil from natural stands ofC. vulgarisandErica azoricaHochst., outdoors in half shade, and partially covered with transparent polyethylene film.

The absolute coefficients of two-photon absorption (TPA) of KDP, KB 5 O 8 · 4 H 2O, quartz and fused silica at 270 and 216 nm are measured. At 216 nm, TPA coefficients of these optical materials are approximately equal: β=(4÷6, 5) · 10−10 cm/W. The presence of crystal dopes is shown to increase nonlinear losses beginning from the intensities ~107 W/cm2.

HBOC-201 (Biopure; Cambridge, MA) is a glutaraldehyde-polymerized bovine hemoglobin (Hb) solution that is stroma free, has lower viscosity than blood, and promotes O2unloading. We investigated the effects of HBOC-201 in a canine model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Dogs were anesthetized and subjected to 90 min of regional myocardial ischemia and 270 min of reperfusion. HBOC-201 or 0.9% saline vehicle equivalent to 10% total blood volume was infused 30 min before myocardial ischemia. Hemodynamic data and peripheral blood samples were taken at baseline, 1 h of myocardial ischemia, and 1, 2, and 4 h of reperfusion. At 270 min of reperfusion, the area at risk (AAR) per left ventricle and the area of infarction (Inf) per AAR were determined. The myocardial AARs in the two study groups were similar. In addition, myocardial blood flow (as measured by radioactive microspheres) in the ischemic zone was similar between the vehicle and HBOC-201 groups. HBOC-201-infused dogs demonstrated a significant ( P < 0.01) 56% reduction in Inf/AAR. Analysis of blood samples taken at 4 h of reperfusion showed a significant ( P < 0.05) reduction in creatine kinase MB isoform for the HBOC-201 group. Histological analysis of the myocardium demonstrated significant ( P < 0.01) reductions in neutrophil infiltration in the HBOC-201 group. These data indicate that treatment with HBOC-201 before myocardial ischemia-reperfusion reduces the extent of myocardial inflammation and ischemia-reperfusion injury in the canine myocardium.

Microgreens of four species of the family Brassicaceae (broccoli, mizuna, radish, and arugula) were grown under 16- and/or 24-h photoperiod conditions. In the first series of experiments, the daily light integral (DLI) was different (15.6 and 23.3 mol m–2 day–1 at PAR 270 µmol m–2 s–1), while it was the same (15.6 mol m–2 day–1 at PAR 270 µmol m–2 s–1 and 180 µmol m–2 s–1) in the second. In the third series of experiments, continuous lighting was used only in the last three days before harvesting. The results obtained showed that broccoli, mizuna, radish, and arugula plants in the early phases of growth are resistant to continuous lighting and do not show typical signs of leaf photodamage. In all three series of experiments, microgreens of all four species grown under 24-h photoperiod had a higher yield and nutritional value (higher content of substances with antioxidant properties—anthocyanins, flavonoids, carotenoids, and proline—as well as increased activity of antioxidant enzymes) and a lower content of nitrates compared to plants grown under 16-h photoperiod. It was concluded that it is possible through the use of continuous lighting without increasing energy costs (while maintaining the DLI) to increase the yield and nutritional value of the studied species of microgreens and reduce their nitrate content compared to the standard 16-h photoperiod. In addition, an increase in nutritional value and a decrease in nitrate content is also possible with the use of continuous lighting (as an agricultural practice) for several days immediately before harvesting.

Direct, preparative methods utilizing high-temperature aqueous media were developed for indole and indole-2-carboxylic acid from ethyl indole-2-carboxylate. Yields were excellent for these reactions, which were carried out in 1 h or less, at temperatures up to 270°C, in a microwave batch reactor of the authors" design. Avoidance of undesirable copper salts, high-boiling organic bases and heat-transfer oils made the methods environmentally benign.

Helicopsyche has about 270 extant species widely distributed, with highest species diversity in tropical and subtropical areas. Currently, the genus is divided into six subgenera, with only two of them occurring in the Neotropical region. In Brazil, 28 species of Helicopsyche have been recorded, being nine in Cochliopsyche and 19 in Feropsyche. In this paper, we describe, diagnose and illustrate six new species of Helicopsyche subgenus Feropsyche from Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil: Helicopsyche bendego sp. nov., H. daome sp. nov., H. dinoprata sp. nov., H. luziae sp. nov., H. petri sp. nov., and H. shaamunensu sp. nov. Furthermore, H. (F.) planorboides is redescribed based on the holotype and additional specimens; the type series of this species is now deposited in the collection of the Departamento de Zoologia, Instituto de Biologia, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Finally, Helicopsyche (F.) catoles, H. (F.) guara and H. (F.) planorboides are reported for the first time from Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, the last one also listed for Espírito Santo state, Brazil.

The crystal structure of the title compound, [Co(C6H4NO2)2(H2O)2]·2H2O, has been reinvestigated with improved precision [previous reports: Chang et al. (1972). J. Coord. Chem. 2, 31–34; Lumme et al. In the title compound, the Co atom is located on an inversion center and its coordination can be described as slightly distorted octahedral, equatorially trans-coordinated by two N and O atoms of two picolinate ligands and axially coordinated by two O atoms of the water molecules. Intermolecular O—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions result in the formation of an intricate three-dimensional network.

It is recently demonstrated that amorphous Ge anode shows higher reversible Na-ion storage capacity (590 mA h g −1 ) than crystallized Ge anode (369 mA h g −1 ). Here, amorphous GeO x anode is prepared by a simple wet-chemistry reduction route at room temperature. The obtained amorphous GeO x shows a porous hierarchical architecture, accompanied with a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of 159 m 2 g −1 and an average pore diameter of 14 nm. This unique structure enables the GeO x anode to enhance the Na-ion/electron diffusion rate, and buffer the volume change. As anode for Na-ion battery, high reversible capacity over 400 mA h g −1 , fine rate capability with a capacity of 200 mA h g −1 maintained at 3.0 A g −1 and long-term cycling stability with 270 mA h g −1 even over 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 are obtained.

Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) increases after consumption of a protein-containing meal but returns to baseline values within 3 h despite continued elevations of plasma amino acids and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTORC1) signaling. This study evaluated the potential for supplemental leucine (Leu), carbohydrates (CHO), or both to prolong elevated MPS after a meal. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (∼270 g) trained to consume three meals daily were food deprived for 12 h, and then blood and gastrocnemius muscle were collected 0, 90, or 180 min after a standard 4-g test meal (20% whey protein). At 135 min postmeal, rats were orally administered 2.63 g of CHO, 270 mg of Leu, both, or water (sham control). Following test meal consumption, MPS peaked at 90 min and then returned to basal ( time 0) rates at 180 min, although ribosomal protein S6 kinase and eIF4E-binding protein-1 phosphorylation remained elevated. In contrast, rats administered Leu and/or CHO supplements at 135 min postmeal maintained peak MPS through 180 min. MPS was inversely associated with the phosphorylation states of translation elongation factor 2, the “cellular energy sensor” adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase-α (AMPKα) and its substrate acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and increases in the ratio of AMP/ATP. We conclude that the incongruity between MPS and mTORC1 at 180 min reflects a block in translation elongation due to reduced cellular energy. Administering Leu or CHO supplements ∼2 h after a meal maintains cellular energy status and extends the postprandial duration of MPS.

We have derived equations, by employing [U-13C]glucose and mass isotopomer analysis, to determine the pathways of glycogen synthesis (J. Katz, W. P. Lee, P. A. Wals, and E. A. Bergner. J. Biol. Chem. 264: 12994–13004, 1989). More recently, by use of these methods we have derived equations to determine the rate of glucose recycling and of gluconeogenesis [Tayek and Katz. Am. J. Physiol.270 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 33): E709–E717, 1996 and 272 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 35): E476–E484, 1997, and Katz and Tayek. Am. J. Physiol. 275 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 38): E537–E542, 1988]. The former equations have been criticized and challenged by C. Des Rosiers, B. R. Landau, and H. Brunengraber [ Am. J. Physiol. 259 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 22): E757–E762, 1990], and the latter recently by B. R. Landau, J. Wahren, S. F. Previs, G. K. Ekberg, D. Yang, and H. Brunengraber [ Am. J. Physiol. 274 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 37): E954–E961, 1998]. Landau et al. claimed that our equations were in error and “corrected” them. Their analysis, and their values for recycling and gluconeogenesis (GNG) differ markedly from ours. We show here our equations and estimates of recycling and GNG to be correct. We present here a theoretical analysis of recycling and discuss the determination of the Cori Cycle and GNG. We illustrate by numerical examples the difference in parameters of glucose metabolism calculated by the methods of Katz and Landau. J. Radziuk and W. N. P. Lee [ Am. J. Physiol. 277 ( Endocrinol Metab. 40): E199–E207, 1999] and J. K. Kelleher [ Am. J. Physiol. 277 ( Endocrinol. Metab. 40): E395–E400, 1999] present a mathematical analysis that, although differing in some respects from Landau’s, supports his equation for GNG. We show in theappendix that their derivation of the equation for GNG is incorrect.

In recent years, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted much attention as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries. Hard carbon (HC) is a well-studied anode material for SIBs; however, the performance as a function of temperature is less established. To investigate temperature dependence of the performance of HC, sodium half-cells with a common NaClO4-based electrolyte were tested at temperatures from 10 to 80 °C. Capacity after 20 cycles at 100 mA g−1 current varied from 90 mA h g−1 at 10 °C to 270 mA h g−1 at 60 °C. Increased temperature significantly improves the HC rate capability, with 120 mA h g−1 capacity found at 60 °C with 500 mA g−1 current. Stability was high at moderate temperature with 220 mA h g−1 capacity remaining after 200 cycles at 40 °C with a current of 100 mA g−1.
