The authors investigated the anthropometric and physiological characteristics of young Guadeloupian competitive swimmers in relation to swimming performance and compared the abilities of these children with those of the young white swimmers reported in the literature. All 2004 competitive swimmers between 10 and 14 y old (126 children, 61 boys and 65 girls, 12.0 ± 1.3 y) from Guadeloupe underwent anthropometric measurements and physiological and performance testing. Six boys on the French national swimming team are referred to hereafter as the 2011 elite subgroup. Anthropometric parameters, a jump-and-reach test, glide, and estimated aerobic power (eVO2max) were assessed in terms of swimming-performance analysis through a 400-m test. This study demonstrated that the Guadeloupian swimmers had more body fat than most age-matched white swimmers but had very poor hydrostatic lift; they had higher peak jump height and they swam as well as their white counterparts. The variability in 400-m performance between subjects was best described by glide, age, and eVO2max. Compared with the group of boys with the same age, the 2011 elite subgroup was significantly better for arm span, peak jump height, glide, and 400-m and 15-m performances. Further research is needed to investigate motor organization and energy cost of swimming in Afro-Caribbean swimmers.

In this article, I examine several contemporary Franco-Caribbean authors as heirs to a movement conceiving of Antillean identity from an indigenous perspective, begun in earnest by Aimé Césaire but carried forward largely by Édouard Glissant. Whereas Guadeloupean Maryse Condé leans heavily towards a broad conception of ‘Créole’, following the openness of Glissant's notion of creolization, Jean Bernabé, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant (the Creolists) insist on creoleness, or créolité. The subtle difference in the suffix of each of these terms indicates a much larger conceptual difference between process and product, continuing evolution and fixed definition. In order to explore the créolité movement from a heterogeneous perspective, I include in my observations the Creolists, who seem at times militant in their views, Condé, who represents a more global mind-set, and an analysis of gender issues.

The notion of ‘disaster’ pervades the Caribbean thought. The common origin of the Caribbean region, the European colonization, caused two disasters: the extermination of Native Americans and the deportation of African slaves. The union between nature and the oppressed people against the oppressor resulted in the creation of an environmental conscience that the Caribbean literature has often expressed. This essay will investigate the common points shared by some Haitian, Martinican and Guadeloupean authors in the writing of natural hazards. It will show that, despite the diversity that marks the Caribbean, there is a repetition of common features that proves its geopoetic unity.

AbstractGisèle Pineau’s Mes quatre femmes: récit (2007) is set in a “geôle obscure de la mémoire,” where different generations of the author’s female relatives are confined. Contrary to the reader’s expectations, however, this memory jail functions as a welcoming, nurturing, womb-like space, as conceptualized by Betty Wilson. Scenes from the past are revisioned and at times, reenacted, as Pineau’s eighteenth-century ancestor Angélique, grandmother Julia, mother Daisy, and aunt Gisèle, after whom Pineau is named, tell stories, all the while imparting knowledge about how they navigated enslavement, colonialism, migration, and patriarchy with various degrees of success during a time when Guadeloupean society and history marginalized them and their experiences. These embodiments of memory remain within her and provide models of behavior for shaping her own identity. In this chapter, I analyze this “geôle obscure de la mémoire”—a veritable site of memory that produces an alternative, oral archive—focusing on the role, dynamic, and storytelling gifts of its inhabitants. I argue that the collective presence of these four women in this atypical spatio-temporal landscape not only haunts their descendant Gisèle in a positive way, but their oral storytelling skills anticipate and inform her own talent for writing.

As a means of illustrating the central albeit conflicted place that issues of authenticity occupy in the French Caribbean, Chapter 3 examines Guadeloupean Maryse Condé’s canonical novel, Traversée de la Mangrove (1989). Consideration of the somewhat heated discussion of Caribbean authenticity prompted by Patrick Chamoiseau’s public reading of Condé’s novel, in evidencing the authors’ stark differences of opinion on the matter, also serves to further inform the fundamentally identitarian dilemmas surrounding the construction of French-Caribbean expression. Subsequent close textual analysis of Traversée de la Mangrove on two distinct architextual and architectural levels illustrates how issues of authenticity are divulged and addressed in the text. Additional consideration of the novel’s architextual properties—in particular with respect to Haitian Jacques Roumain’s Gouverneurs de la Rosée (1944)—leads, in conclusion, to an examination of the architectural significance of the house that Condé’s main character inhabits and in which he undertakes the (metatextual) project of writing a novel entitled Traversée de la Mangrove.
