Like Milton’s couple at the end of Paradise Lost, we find ourselves banished from the Eden of Egoism and needing to reassess what it means to be human. Evidence for empathy-induced altruism, including two prisoner’s dilemma experiments described here, challenges the parsimonious assumption that we only want to maximize self-interest (egoism). And, the world outside Eden is even more challenging because, in addition to egoism and altruism, two more motives must be considered: collectivism (concern for the welfare of a group) and principlism (concern to uphold some moral principle, standard, or ideal). These four types of motivation sometimes conflict, sometimes cooperate. One way to promote a more just and caring society may be to orchestrate motives of different types so that the strengths of one type can overcome the weaknesses of another. Combining an appeal to empathy-induced altruism with an appeal to principle seems especially promising. Examples of such orchestration are provided.

Psychotherapy is a process based on different types of schools of thought, with patient and therapist working together through talking therapies to bring about a sustained change. Three types of psychotherapy have been described: supportive, re-educative, and constructive. Each has a specific set of rules and strategies that the therapist must follow. Once again, the explanatory models of patients and their families will influence whether they engage in therapy or not. Those from minority cultural groups may enter therapy with a pre-existing defence, such as seeing the majority population as the problem, and the therapist may find it difficult to engage them. It is worth recognizing that different schools of therapy may not always apply to other cultural groups. In addition, it may be that ethnic minority therapists have faced discrimination and this experience will affect their attitudes. Furthermore, they may not be willing to share negative experiences.

The p-adic Simpson correspondence, recently initiated by Gerd Faltings, aims at describing all p-adic representations of the fundamental group of a proper smooth variety over a p-adic field in terms of linear algebra—namely Higgs bundles. This book undertakes a systematic development of the theory following two new approaches. It mainly focuses on generalized representations of the fundamental group that are p-adically close to the trivial representation. The first approach relies on a new family of period rings built from the torsor of deformations of the variety over a universal p-adic thickening defined by J. M. Fontaine. The second approach introduces a crystalline-type topos and replaces the notion of Higgs bundles with that of Higgs isocrystals. The book shows the compatibility of the two constructions and the compatibility of the correspondence with the natural cohomologies. The last part of the book contains results of wider interest in p-adic Hodge theory. The reader will find a concise introduction to Faltings' theory of almost étale extensions and a chapter devoted to the Faltings topos. Though this topos is the general framework for Faltings' approach in p-adic Hodge theory, it remains relatively unexplored.

This chapter discusses the concept of culture and reviews the basic principles of multidisciplinary cross-cultural research. The readers are introduced to cross-cultural research in anthropology, psychology, political science, and sociology. These cross-cultural research fields offer social work both theoretical and methodological resources. The readers will find that all cross-cultural research fields share the same concern—that is, the equivalence of research instruments. One cannot draw meaningful comparisons of behavioral problems, social values, or psychological status between or across different cultural groups in the absence of cross-culturally equivalent research instruments. This book provides a new study of ethnic segregation across English state schools in the period from 2011 to 2017. It examines whether patterns of school-level segregation decreased or increased over the period, how those patterns compare with patterns of residential segregation, whether particular types of schools are associated with greater ethnic separations, and whether socio-economic differences add to the geographies of ethnic segregation. We find that high levels of ethnic segregation do exist between the majority White British and some other ethnic groups such as the Bangladeshi and Pakistani, more so at the primary than secondary level of schooling, and increased also for the more affluent of the White British. However, there is no compelling evidence that ethnic segregation is increasing – instead, the general trend is towards desegregation and greater ethnic diversity within local authority areas and their schools. Nor is there persuasive evidence that ethnic segregation is exacerbated greatly (at least, not directly) by the present system of school choice because school intakes appear comparable to the characteristics of their surrounding neighbourhoods in their ethnic composition.

One aspect of women’s professional experience in the field of international studies is that of teaching. Women’s experience in the gendered classroom has been shaped by three general factors: their identity, their interests, and the institutions in which they work. Major dimensions of identity can be grouped into: identity as reputation; identity as race and sex; and identity as role models and mentors. Meanwhile, women’s teaching is clearly affected by their scholarly interests, which impact on both the subjects they choose to teach and their pedagogical approaches. While it would not be surprising to find that women teachers tend to teach more about women and feminism, a major survey of International Relations (IR) faculty in the United States found other significant differences between women and men in the classroom, often linked to women’s differing research interests. Women’s teaching is also impacted by the institutional environment in which they work. Surveys and studies across the academic spectrum confirm the importance not only of gender equity at institutions, but also the presence of an institutional climate, or culture, that is friendly to women faculty. Major elements that affect the institutional environment include the number of faculty women (including senior women); the type of institution (its focus on research or teaching); and the ability to offer feminist and gender courses, and related pedagogies.

Islamic book culture dates back to late antiquity, when Muslim scholars began to write down their doctrines on parchment, papyrus, and paper and then to compose increasingly elaborate analyses of, and commentaries on, these ideas. Movable type was adopted in the Middle East only in the early nineteenth century, and it wasn't until the second half of the century that the first works of classical Islamic religious scholarship were printed there. But from that moment on, as this book reveals, the technology of print transformed Islamic scholarship and Arabic literature. The book tells the story of how a small group of editors and intellectuals brought forgotten works of Islamic literature into print and defined what became the classical canon of Islamic thought. Through the lens of the literary culture of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Arab cities—especially Cairo, a hot spot of the nascent publishing business—the book explores the contributions of these individuals, who included some of the most important thinkers of the time. Through their efforts to find and publish classical literature, the book shows, many nearly lost works were recovered, disseminated, and harnessed for agendas of linguistic, ethical, and religious reform. The book is an examination of the central role printing and its advocates played in the intellectual history of the modern Arab world.

Habitat is crucial to the survival and reproduction of individual organisms as well as persistence of populations. As such, species-habitat relationships have long been studied, particularly in the field of wildlife ecology and to a lesser extent in the more encompassing discipline of ecology. The habitat requirements of a species largely determine its spatial distribution and abundance in nature. One way to recognize and appreciate the over-riding importance of habitat is to consider that a young organism must find and settle into the appropriate type of habitat as one of the first challenges of life. This process can be cast in a probabilistic framework and used to better understand the mechanisms behind habitat preferences and selection. There are at least six distinctly different statistical approaches to conducting a habitat analysis – that is, identifying and quantifying the environmental variables that a species most strongly associates with. These are (1) comparison among group means (e.g., ANOVA), (2) multiple linear regression, (3) multiple logistic regression, (4) classification and regression trees, (5) multivariate techniques (Principal Components Analysis and Discriminant Function Analysis), and (6) occupancy modelling. Each of these is lucidly explained and demonstrated by application to a hypothetical dataset. The strengths and weaknesses of each method are discussed. Given the ongoing biodiversity crisis largely caused by habitat destruction, there is a crucial and general need to better characterize and understand the habitat requirements of many different species, particularly those that are threatened and endangered.

This chapter discusses business groups within the context of the development of large enterprises in France. The latter have predominantly taken the form of holding companies (usually called groupes) akin to hierarchical-type business groups, undiversified or with related diversification, often of a pyramidal type. Another, more recent feature of French big business has been the continuous spread of the multidivisional structure since the 1960s. Diversified business groups have formed a small but not insignificant part of French big business. While only bank-centered business groups existed before the First World War, family-owned groups have been a persistent though minority component of French big business since the 1920s. State-owned business groups have never properly featured in France, nor have conglomerates in the 1960s and 1970s or private equity since the 1980s.

De plus en plus souvent, les processus de réforme constitutionnelle sont considérés comme des éléments critiques des processus de consolidation de la paix et de (re)construction des États. En situation de conflit, un processus d’élaboration d’une constitution est souvent nécessaire pour renégocier les modalités d’accès au pouvoir et aux ressources publics. Idéalement, la constitution qui en résulte rend l’État plus inclusif, et donc, plus attentif aux besoins d’un plus grand nombre de groupes sociaux, politiques et/ou économiques, ce qui contribue au maintien d’une paix durable et évite la reprise des conflits. Le choix des rédacteurs de la constitution et le mode de sélection des organes dépositaires de ce processus sont des éléments cruciaux du processus constituant et déterminent souvent la légitimité du processus dans son ensemble, ainsi que le contenu et la réussite de la constitution. Ce document d’orientation examine les types d’organes constituants (OC) impliqués dans 37 processus d’élaboration de constitutions post-conflit qui se sont déroulés entre 1991 et 2018, et la façon dont ils ont été sélectionnés. En outre, il analyse la fréquence des différents types d’OC en situation de conflit, et tente de déterminer si le processus constituant et sa conception ont une incidence sur le type d’OC choisi.
