The USDA–ARS has released a new pinkeye-type southernpea cultivar named GreenPack-DG. GreenPack-DG is the first pinkeye-type southernpea to be released that has a persistent green seed phenotype conditioned by both the green cotyledon gene (gc) and the green testa (gt) gene. The new cultivar was developed from a cross between Charleston Greenpack (green cotyledon phenotype) and the breeding line USVL 97-296 (green testa phenotype). Except for longer pods, GreenPack-DG is similar in appearance and maturity to Charleston Greenpack. Dry GreenPack-DG seeds have a richer and more-uniform green seed color than dry seeds of Charleston Greenpack. GreenPack-DG seeds are much less susceptible to color loss due to blanching when harvest is delayed than are seeds of green-cotyledon cultivars such as Charleston Greenpack. Color loss is a critical problem in production systems where preharvest desiccants are used to facilitate mechanical harvesting operations. The 7-day delay between application of the desiccant and initiation of harvesting operations can result in serious color degradation. Results of 3 years of replicated field tests at Charleston, S.C., indicate that GreenPack-DG yields are comparable to Charleston Greenpack yields. The new cultivar has excellent field resistance to blackeye cowpea mosaic virus and does not produce hard seeds. GreenPack-DG is recommended for trial by the frozen food industry as a replacement for Charleston Greenpack. Protection for GreenPack-DG is being sought under the Plant Variety Protection Act.

The USDA has released a new, pinkeye-type southernpea cultivar that is homozygous for the gc gene conditioning the green cotyledon trait. The new cultivar, `Charleston Greenpack', can be harvested at the near-dry stage of pod maturity without loss of the pea's fresh green color. `Charleston Greenpack' originated as a bulk of an F8 [`Kiawah' × (`Kiawah' × `Bettergreen')] population grown in 1994. Except for the green seed color, a tendency for a slightly greener foliage, and a slightly smaller pea size, the phenotype of `Charleston Greenpack' is quite similar to those of `Coronet' and `Pinkeye Purple Hull-BVR'. The results of replicated field tests indicate that `Charleston Greenpack' yields are comparable to those of `Coronet' and `Pinkeye Purple Hull-BVR'. Results of raw product evaluations conducted at a commercial freezing facility indicate that `Charleston Greenpack' produces an excellent processed product. `Charleston Greenpack' has excellent field resistance to blackeye cowpea mosaic virus, the major pathogen of southernpea in the United States.

To explore the spatial power and spatial relationship of urban greenway sports cultural memory, using literature data induction analysis method, questionnaire survey method, interview method, and other research methods, the connotation of urban greenway sports cultural memory is analyzed, and the urban greenway sports are explained. Using Lefebvre’s ternary dialectics to study the production process of Guangzhou greenway’s sports cultural memory space, its spatial practice is in the interpretation of Guangzhou’s Greenway sports cultural memory. The government is the leading force in the memory of greenway sports culture. It is a necessary prerequisite for the cultural memory of greenway sports, and the public is the main body of the cultural memory of greenway sports. The spatial representation is in the context of the cultural memory of greenway sports, sorting out the hard memory and soft memory in the memory field of Guangzhou Greenway Sports Culture. The representational space is the sports cultural memory space experienced by the greenway activists, space directly “lived” by the greenway activists, and the internalization of the cognition, experience, and spatial representation of the sport’s cultural memory of the greenway activists.

To study the relationship between urban greenway cycling space perception and cycling behavior intention, factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were used to conduct a questionnaire survey of 411 college students to discover the advantages and disadvantages of urban greenway cycling factor, to achieve the comparison of related indicators and dimensions. The results show that the dimensions of Guangdong urban greenway sports space perception include accessibility perception, supporting perception, service perception, and environmental spatial characteristics; Guangdong college students’ greenway cycling space perception is highly correlated with cycling behavior intention, and there is a positive correlation. Among them, the environmental spatial characteristics are the most influential factors. Greenway accessibility, supporting services, cycling landscapes, etc. can stimulate college students’ greenway cycling behavior intentions. Improving the perception of urban greenway cycling space is an effective strategy to improve college students’ greenway sports behaviour and greenway cycling behaviour.

With the urbanization development in China, natural ecological environment and ecological environments in rural areas have been affected. Therefore, the characteristics and classification of rural greenway were analyzed on the basis of eco economic model theory, the resources of ecological, cultural, recreational and industrial greenway planning were evaluated, and the structure characteristics of rural greenway network are analyzed. A mathematical model of space superposition analysis is constructed. Taking SunYea town of Feixian county in Shandong as the object, starting from the green road network space, greenway system, service facilities, transfer system and identification system and other aspects, the construction of the rural greenway was carefully planned. Practice has proved that rural greenway planning research has improved the scientific nature of the allocation of resources, and has a certain exemplary role for the construction of rural greenway network in similar areas.

As an important urban open green space system, greenway provides a place for people to play and leisure activities, which has ecological, recreational, cultural, aesthetic characteristics. This study investigates public perception toward environmental attributes of the greenway system in an urban setting. The goal of the study was to understand the perceived environmental quality of the Zengcheng greenway within diverse landscape elements composing the greenways main spatial and visual structure. We utilized public perceptual judgments as indicators of environmental quality, and referred to a psychophysical method to assess the environmental attributes of Zengcheng greenway. Through the investigation, including document analysis, the site exploration, questionnaire and interview, this paper reaches a conclusion whether the Zengcheng greenway meets the actual demands of practical use, therefore it comes up with scientific and practical suggestions for the design of greenway in the future.

Greenways are an important component of the ecological network of urban green spaces and contribute to ensuring a complete and continuous ecosystem. Once a city’s greenways have been built, their future success relies heavily on visitors’ intuitive feelings and satisfaction. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate visitor satisfaction with greenways. Using Greenway No. 1 in Shanghai’s Minhang District as an example, we in this article constructed an index system to evaluate visitor satisfaction with the greenway based on a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method. The visitors’ demographic and behavioral characteristics and their comprehensive reviews of Greenway No. 1 were analyzed. The results showed that the gender ratio among visitors to Greenway No. 1 was relatively balanced. Most visitors were retired and elderly, and most were from nearby areas. The visitors used the greenway frequently, and the travel time for most was less than ten minutes. The overall visitor satisfaction with the greenway reached the “satisfied” level, and most indices reached the basic level of satisfaction. However, certain basic service facilities were found to be inadequate. The results provide suggestions and references for the construction of greenways in Shanghai and surrounding provinces and cities.

Cultural greenway projects (CGPs) are widely regarded as an urban planning approach which connects open green spaces and sites of sociocultural value to provide access to living, working and recreational spaces and enhance local social well-being. This paper examines the impact of such CGPs on public living desire before and after a given project is completed through analyzing housing prices in the surrounding area. We deployed a hedonic pricing model (HPM) and differences in differences (DID) model to analyze and record any changes in housing market trends that may have been caused by such a cultural greenway project. Via analysis of single-family home sale transactions in central Beijing from 2013 to 2017, we found substantial evidence that proximity to a cultural greenway project is positively linked with rising property prices. Once complete, CGPs were similarly associated with positive increases per HPM and DID modeling. Our results revealed that the distance to greenway contributed significantly positive impact on the housing market after the cultural greenway project completed. Moreover, our result indicated that once a CGP was open to the public, it increased the price of properties within 1 km by 13.3%. Seller and buyer expectations of the development of local, green public infrastructure also began to factor into housing prices prior to the greenway opening to the public. Post-completion, the positive trend in property pricing due to local CGPs indicates that the public still have an increasing desire to live near the greenway. These results will help policymakers better understand how cultural greenways affect neighborhoods in high-density urban contexts, and will support the development of urban greenway policies for cities in China that reap the maximum economic benefit.

We present an information visualization tool, known as GreenMax, to visually explore large small-world graphs with up to a million graph nodes on a desktop computer. A major motivation for scanning a small-world graph in such a dynamic fashion is the demanding goal of identifying not just the well-known features but also the unknown–known and unknown–unknown features of the graph. GreenMax uses a highly effective multilevel graph drawing approach to pre-process a large graph by generating a hierarchy of increasingly coarse layouts that later support the dynamic zooming of the graph. This paper describes the graph visualization challenges, elaborates our solution, and evaluates the contributions of GreenMax in the larger context of visual analytics on large small-world graphs. We report the results of two case studies using GreenMax and the results support our claim that we can use GreenMax to locate unexpected features or structures behind a graph.

Greenways provide multiple benefits for trail users’ individual experiences based on users’ background environment and their perceptions of characteristics such as the trail width, vegetation, water, and facilities. Although greenway trail characteristics are important factors that affect users’ preferences, only a few studies have examined individuals’ experiences of greenways based on their perceptions and preferences. The purpose of this study is to examine how greenway trails can be designed to improve users’ experiences in relation to their perceptions and preferences by considering trail characteristics. We examine the relationship between greenway trail characteristics and likability using t-tests as well as correlation and multiple regression analyses. In the current study, virtual tour surveys of greenway users were conducted, with two urban greenway trails as the study sites: Town Lake Trail in Austin, Texas, and Buffalo Bayou Trail in Houston, Texas. Perceptions of all eight greenway trail characteristics, except for background buildings, were significantly different between the trails, and a significant difference in likability was found for five characteristics (the presence of water, trail facilities, trail width, adjacent automobile traffic, and built structures on the trail). In addition, the results of the correlation and multiple regression analyses revealed that the presence of water, amount of vegetation, automobile traffic, and built structures were correlated with likability. These findings suggest that designing appropriate types of greenway trails can help increase users’ likeability ratings of urban greenways. This study contributes to the enhancement of trail environments by providing strategies for practitioners to effectively design and manage greenways.

This paper will conduct a case study of slow lane system of Guangzhou International Biological Island (GIBI) greenway network in three main phases: (1) describe building standard of slow system in Construction Guidelines of Regional Greenways in Guangdong Province; (2) analyze GIBI Greenway comprehensive plan and investigate the site to illustrate slow lane design; and (3) provide concrete improvement measure and suggestion to slow lane system. We concluded by discussing solutions of these problems, and suggested some proposals in design to meet the visitors’ requirement for the future construction of greenway. The GIBI Greenway has served as a model for riparian greenways elsewhere in Guangzhou. This research hopes to guide slow lane system’s programs and development standards to make bicycling in Guangzhou more safe, comfortable, convenient and enjoyable for all bicyclists.

Ecosystem services depend on the interrelation between people and the environment, and people are increasingly recognizing the social value of ecosystem services. Based on humans needs related to the values of ecosystem services, riparian greenways, properly planned and managed for resiliency, could provide great opportunities for social ecological change and transformation toward sustainability. We focus on the ecosystem service values of such greenways based on resilience in urban communities. The purpose of this study is to assess the social value of ecosystem services for resilient riparian greenway planning and management based on a survey of residents living near the Yangjaecheon riparian greenway in Gwacheon, South Korea. First, cluster analysis was performed with data from 485 completed surveys to identify different groups of respondents. Importance-performance analysis (IPA) was then applied to develop planning and management guidance for the riparian greenway based on group characteristics. Two distinct groups were identified: the Strong Social Value of Ecosystem Services group and the Neutral Social Value of Ecosystem Services group. Different distributions were found between the two groups based on gender and residency period, and significant differences were also found for age and familiarity with the riparian greenway. The results show what each group perceived to be important and how well the riparian greenway met their expectations regarding ecosystem services. These results indicate the perceived value of ecosystem services on the basis of the group characteristics, helping establish the direction for resilient riparian greenway planning and management approaches.

However, residents more likely to be active may have selected to live near existing greenways. The purpose of this study was to determine whether development of a new greenway has the potential to increase activity levels of existing, proximate residents.Methods:In 2008, survey data were collected before and after 5 miles of greenway were added to an existing greenway.Results:When comparing residents living nearest (≤ .50 miles) the new greenway section with those living further (.51−1.0 miles), days spent walking and participating in moderate physical activity increased. The study aims to investigate the optimal packaging material to maximise the restriction of physiological and biochemical changes which reduce oyster mushroom (Pleurotus saijo caju) quality during the storage after harvesting. There are six packaging techniques tested, including PET box, PET box with kraft paper, PET box with kraft covered by GreenMAP bag, soft tray covered GreenMAP bag, soft tray with kraft paper in GreenMAP bag, and kraft paper. The result shows that the PET box with kraft paper in the GreenMAP bag is the most suitable for the storage of oyster mushrooms. After 10 days under 4oC, the lowest weight reduction can be seen with only 5.78%, soluble protein declines 65.49%, and decrease of vitamin C with 27.87 mg/100 g. In addition, the fruit body can maintain the colour, structure, and taste better than those packed with other materials

This visual essay illustrates the transformative, performative and narrative potential costume can have in the context of outdoor site-responsive work, by looking at Ceschi + Lane’s recent R&D project, Greenham. The project included two performances that took place on Greenham Common, the site of a former RAF and American Army base in the English countryside, which is now common land. Greenham is also the former site of the Greenham Common Women’s Peace camp, set up in 1981 to protest against the British government allowing American cruise missiles to be stored at the base. In response to the scarred landscape of the post-Cold War dereliction and the contested history of Greenham Common, we created costumes that embodied imaginative and provocative ideas around landscape and memory, the body and its environment and women’s relationship to power. These costumes acted as critical intervention and commentary in a public space. This visual essay provides retrospective analysis of these costumes, their effect on the performers and their contribution to the dramaturgy of the site-responsive performance. Drawing on contemporary references, it attempts to articulate the work’s contribution to the wider discussion around costume’s agency and costume as carrier of meaning in public spaces and as part of site-responsive performance practice.

Abstract The potential for using a standardized landscape evaluation method for planning a greenway in a young glacial area in northern Poland is evaluated in this paper. In the evaluation of visual landscape attractiveness (VLA), we took into account not only its natural but also its cultural components. The cultural components were divided into two groups, i.e. increasing and decreasing VLA scores. The sources of data needed for the evaluation included a Vector Smart Map level 2 (VMap L2), aerial photographs and a field survey. The newly-designated greenway links two landscape parks (which play the role of greenspaces) and runs along numerous lakes, forests, rivers, and objects of cultural heritage. The greenway is composed of existing local roads, allowing a more optimal utilisation of natural and cultural resources of the landscape, primarily those located between the selected greenspaces. Using this application, the idea of sustainable development can be implemented, and the overlapping protected areas will not be subject to devitalisation. The VLA method can facilitate multiple greenway designations in other areas.

Ten years on from the 2008 global financial crisis, this article sets in dialogue two French treatments – by the novelist Mathieu Larnaudie and the philosopher Bernard Stiegler – of footage of the 2008 testimony of Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve, before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The article introduces and compares the concepts of ‘effondrement’ and ‘prolétarisation’ developed by the two writers in relation to the Greenspan hearing, and analyses how both understand the question of ideology as it emerges in the hearing. Informed by interviews conducted by the author with Larnaudie and Stiegler, the piece concludes by discussing the notion common to both writers that Greenspan is a ‘saint’ of the crisis.

Regional greenway implementation requires a complex governance structure to deal with regional-local, cross-jurisdictional and cross-sectoral relations. This paper explores how these three intergovernmental relations are shaped by different governance structures and how they influence regional greenway implementation outcomes. An analytical framework was proposed considering four structural factors (size, specialisation, order and anarchy) and China’s inherited tiao (vertical)-kuai (horizontal) system of authority. By analysing a case-study project with evolving governance structures over time, the paper reveals that a more powerful, sectorally specialised, autonomous and inclusive local coordination office is ideal to foster institutional linkages within administrative jurisdiction, between adjacent governments and across government hierarchy. These links are essential for efficient and integrated greenway implementation in city-regions.

Background:Previous research has observed a positive correlation between having greenways or trails proximate to homes and the physical activity behaviors among residents. Few studies using a pre–post research design have been conducted, and each has pointed to the need for more rigorous studies which incorporate an appropriate control group.Methods:Residents from households living within 1 mile of a proposed greenway and those from a control neighborhood located between 2 and 3 miles of the proposed greenway were randomly selected to participate in the study. Participants were mailed a survey before the onset of construction and again 1 year after the trail was opened. Outcomes were the number of days during the previous week that respondents reported participating in walking, moderate activity, and vigorous activity.Results:Repeated measures analyses of variance indicated no significant differences between the experimental and control groups in days of walking, moderate activity, or vigorous activity before and after the greenway was constructed.Conclusions:Findings suggest that building a greenway did not affect the physical activity behaviors of proximate residents. Other studies should consider different trail types from a variety of settings to determine whether physical activity behavior changes may be context specific.

The Cross Florida Greenway is a multiuse trail that bisects the central region of Florida, an area that was originally set aside for the Cross Florida Barge Canal. After Congress deauthorized the barge canal, the Cross Florida Greenway State Recreational Area was created, and the canal property was turned over to the state. Interstate 75 interrupts the Cross Florida Greenway in Marion County in a north-to-south direction for a distance of about 1829 m (6,000 ft) along the I-75 centerline. No bridges or underpass structures currently exist that connect both sides of the Greenway. Through several years of study, the Florida Department of Transportation and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection developed a land bridge concept for traversing the I-75 right-of-way while continuing the Greenway characteristics across the bridge. The land bridge concept is used internationally and is conducive to wildlife usage. The structure will be 16 m (52.5 ft) wide. It will provide a stabilized section along the center portion of the bridge for bicyclists, pedestrians, and equestrians, as well as earthen berms to support plantings along the outside edges of the structure. The key unique structural elements of the bridge, which is the first precast U-beam superstructure to be constructed in the state, include use of open triangular-shaped median piers, integral abutments, and geosynthetic-reinforced, vegetated approach slopes. The project is expected to attract national and international attention because it may be the first of its kind in the United States and because of its location along the heavily traveled I-75.

With the continuous advancement of big data technology, there are many drawbacks in the past urban greenway design. The environment, population distribution, geographic location, spatial distribution, and other factors affect the greenway design. At the same time, a large amount of historical data is mixed. The systematic arrangement has indirectly led to the fact that urban greenway design does not know how to analyze and use past data. There is always a waste of various resources. While greenways bring many positive impacts, they also have negative impacts: it is difficult for the wild animals in the greenways to move along the predetermined passages, and most animals spread in the greenways in a disorderly manner, so that the greenways accelerate the invasion of alien species and diseases to a certain extent. Using big data technology can enable us to allocate resources more reasonably and accurately. The purpose of this article is to study the use of big data technology to rationalize our urban greenway design. This paper adopts a calculation method that closely combines quantitative and qualitative features to study its features. The local feature analysis algorithm can extract and analyze urban spatial data. Spatial remote sensing image technology can deepen our knowledge and understanding of urban spatial characteristics, conduct data mining, provide all the information of urban space, analyze the content and type, and classify it; then filter and integrate the big data in the greenway planning and design information. The information about greenway planning and design in the big data of Dao Design is digitized. This information can be composed of traditional data and dynamic data. Finally, after scientific analysis, the data is subjected to scenario assumptions, modeling, and output, we applied various analysis results to actual operations, and we obtain the final inspection. In fact, this is also going out from actual work, summing up the experience we have done, and again starting from the perspective of specific practice. Compared with our traditional field investigation before, with the guidance of big data analysis, the experimental results of this article show that under the use of big data technology, the wrong resolution of the SegNet semantic classification algorithm for buildings is 9.6%, and the others are 10.9%, 16%, 20%, etc., which are all greater than 9.6%, so the segNet model has a higher image acquisition accuracy. It can solve the problems caused by the lag of the past questionnaires and the small sample size, improve the accuracy of data extraction through algorithms, find some features and problems of greenway design, and complete the urban greening rate through computer algorithms. Calculation and analysis can better provide the most reasonable method for greenway design site selection and route selection.

The United Nations have identified climate change as the greatest threat to human life. As current research shows, urban areas are more vulnerable to climate change than rural areas. Numerous people are affected by climate change in their daily life, health and well-being. The need to react is undisputed and has led to numerous guidelines and directives for urban climate adaptation. Plants are commonly mentioned and recommended as one key to urban climate adaptation. Due to shading of open space and building surfaces, as well as evapotranspiration, plants reduce the energy load on the urban fabric and increase thermal comfort and climate resilience amongst many other ecosystem services. Plants, therefore, are described as green infrastructure (GI), because of the beneficial effects they provide. Extensive green roofs are often discussed regarding their impact on thermal comfort for pedestrians and physical properties of buildings. By means of Stadslab2050 project Elief Playhouse in Antwerp, Belgium, a single-story building in the courtyard of a perimeter block, the effects of different extensive green roof designs (A and B) on the microclimate, human comfort at ground and roof level, as well as building physics are analyzed and compared to the actual roofing (bitumen membrane) as the Status Quo variant. For the analyses and evaluation of the different designs the innovative Green Performance Assessment System (GREENPASS®) method has been chosen. The planning tool combines spatial and volumetric analyses with complex 3D microclimate simulations to calculate key performance indicators such as thermal comfort score, thermal storage score, thermal load score, run-off and carbon sequestration. Complementary maps and graphs are compiled. Overall, the chosen method allows to understand, compare and optimize project designs and performance. The results for the Elief Playhouse show that the implementation of green roofs serves a slight contribution to the urban energy balance but a huge impact on the building and humans. Variant B with entire greening performs better in all considered indicators, than the less greened design Variant A and the actual Status Quo. Variant B will probably bring a greater cost/benefit than Variant A and is thus recommended.
