In 1873, a financial crisis plunged the United States into a deep economic depression that exacerbated a number of post-war economic issues. By the late 1870s, political dissent centered primarily on financial issues merged into the Greenback movement, which represented a loose coalition of reformers calling for economic relief based on the expanded use of greenbacks (paper currency issued by the United States Treasury during the Civil War). The Greenback Party emerged as a direct response to federal financial policies, but in Texas, it also provided a broad political platform for those opposed to the policies of "Redeemer/Bourbon" Democrats. The Greenback Party of Texas brought together a wide range of dissenters, including disgruntled Democrats, ousted Republicans, and many different economic and social reformers. From 1876, when the first Greenback clubs appeared in Texas, to the Greenback Party's virtual disappearance after the election of 1884, the Texas Greenbackers reached across boundaries of section, race, class, and sometimes gender; brought together farmers, workers, and professionals; Southerners and Northerners, white and black; former Confederates and former Unionists; native-born Americans and immigrants; and received sizable support from multiple counties in the northern, eastern, and central part of the state. In spite of its short run in Texas, the Greenback movement demonstrates both the complexity of Texas politics after Reconstruction and the failure of Democratic leaders to adequately address economic issues resulting from post-bellum economic changes. The movement also laid the foundation for many future reform movements with the articulation of an antimonopoly political tradition.

Abstract Across the country and world, cities are building urban greenways to achieve environmental, economic, and social objectives. Greenways are recreational trails that provide functions beyond recreation, such as stormwater management, economic development, community development, and aesthetic improvements. A plan to build an urban greenway in downtown Tampa is underway. The greenway is proposed to be built underneath and adjacent to the Selmon Expressway, in conjunction with a widening and redecking project. A feasibility study was performed and approved by the Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organization; now the biggest hurdle standing in the way of the Selmon Greenway is finding funding. This thesis uses qualitative research methods to build a case for the Selmon Greenway by demonstrating the importance and usefulness of greenways and examples of other urban greenways to provide ideas for possible funding and implementation strategies. Three case studies of greenways in New York City, Minneapolis, and Miami provide real-world examples of greenways, the benefits these cities have seen, and the funding sources and implementation strategies used to develop these greenways. Additionally, an in-depth case study of Tampa and the Selmon Greenway details the planning process and status of the greenway, the potential benefits the greenway could bring to downtown Tampa, and possible sources of funding.

This thesis presents a brief history and series of definitions of greenways. Its to provide a framework of assessment for greenway management, based on v indicators that the layperson may use. The indicators are intended to enable developers, managers, and interested volunteers an opportunity to assess existing proposed greenways at all stages of development, and compare their actual use to their designed functionality. To this end, several sets of indicators that are based design are also presented, and analyzed within the framework of greenways. A final set of indicators customized to greenways is then described, and applied to three greenways, with a final assessment of the workability of the indicator set.

This thesis draws together a range of Mrs Humphry Ward’s writing alongside her activities as a reformer to reposition her as a Greenian educator. Education is conceived in terms of Thomas Hill Green’s (1836-1882) idealist philosophy as the progression towards a better society through the development of the individual. The granddaughter of Dr Arnold of Rugby, Mrs Humphry Ward was a famous English novelist whose reputation was established through her novel about religious doubt Robert Elsmerre (1888), which brought the ideas of the Oxford philosopher, T.H. Green, to the attention of the public. The novel explored his belief that theory and practice must come together within un-dogmatic interpretations of Christianity for the benefit of society. Throughout her life, Mrs Humphry Ward pursued and pioneered educational reforms but her achievements have been overshadowed by her controversial role as the leader of the anti-suffrage movement. Following a chapter introducing the idealist principles underpinning Green’s philosophy and suggesting reasons why Mrs Humphry Ward can be considered among his pupils, disciples and followers, there are three substantive chapters. Each of these chapters has a separate but inter-related focus on religious, social and political aspects of her life and work as a writer and reformer; tracing the extent to which Green’s philosophical principles are discernible in her life and work. Within a gender history methodology, the thesis acknowledges the varied degrees to which Mrs Humphry Ward was simultaneously able to challenge and be complicit with power structures, which contrived to limit and control middle-class women’s ability to engage with the religious, social and political issues and debates affecting society. The thesis demonstrates Mrs Humphry Ward’s significance within histories of education and argues that the tensions within her life and work can be better understood and appreciated by viewing her as a Greenian educator.

This project explores the design of a rail-trail in the Midwest utilizing visual preference methods with ArcGIS and 3D visualization technologies. It has been found that visually preferred environments are more enjoyable, more frequently used places that positively influence overall health of individuals and communities. Aesthetic attributes of environments, in particular, are directly related to overall physical, social, and mental health. Research conducted on environment, behavior, and human preference suggests that environmental settings can influence perceptions of quality of life, sense of place, and mental states, which affect stress levels, which are physically manifested in the body (Kaplan 1982, 1987, 1995, 1998; Lusk 2002; RWJF 2006; Shafer 2000).One way of providing healthier environments is by improving aesthetics according to the visual characteristics that promote understanding and exploration of the environment, specifically perceptual values of smoothness, density, and landcover type (Kaplan and Kaplan 1998; Brown 1994). This technique allows social issues such as public opinion and health benefits to be integrated with environmental and cultural issues to thoroughly address design and management solutions, especially in recreation areas. Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions facilitated the analysis by adapting the United States Forest Service visual analysis framework to the visual preference research to assess the use of GIS and 3D technology in a design oriented application. This included the addition of a 3D element to allow the designer to experience how a scene changes through space and time. Use of 2D, 3D, and animation capabilities of ArcGIS assisted in the visualization of landscape preference from the trail-user's point of view to assess the perceptual qualities of the landscape along the Cardinal Greenway. The project findings outline the capabilities of ArcGIS 3D Analyst and Spatial Analyst for mapping and measuring these perceptual and physical landscape qualities. The resulting design concepts reflect the findings of this study. It is anticipated that the process followed could be adapted and applied to recreation areas in similar geographic regions, and thereby advance daily recreation and lifestyle change for healthier individuals and communities.

As one of the initiatives associated with the creation of the Susquehanna River Greenway Corridor in Pennsylvania, new connections will be established between the river, the greenway, and river communities. These connections will be made in an attempt to strengthen and revitalize the river corridor. The connections will be facilitated through a variety of projects ranging from parks or scenic overlooks to large-scale commercial or industrial developments. It was the intention for this creative project to explore ways in which communities along the river could connect to the river and the greenway through the redevelopment of industrial brownfield sites that separated those communities from the river. It was believed that the redevelopments would create links between the communities, the river and the greenway and that these connections would generate enhancement for both the communities and the greenway. In order to make strong connections, the components of these redevelopment projects must be consistent with the existing greenway project. Therefore, the fundamental concepts and goals of the greenway were identified and from those concepts and goals, guidelines were created to help guide industrial redevelopment projects. The major goal of the greenway initiative is to enhance local communities and the Susquehanna River valley as a whole. Concepts for the greenway center on issues of access, the environment, local and regional history, recreation, and economic development. The guidelines that were created based on the greenway concepts are suggestions for techniques communities could use to incorporate these concepts into their redevelopment projects. Some of these suggestions are very specific to industrial brownfield sites. For example, the need for soil and groundwater remediation is identified. Other suggestions are based on general planning techniques that could be used in any development or redevelopment situation along the greenway. The guidelines focus on land use, creating physical and visual connections to the river, transportation and circulation, the incorporation of the historic component, the built and natural environment, and economic development.Attached, as an appendix to this creative project is a proposed plan for the redevelopment of an actual industrial site along the greenway. The plan was created using the guidelines from this project to demonstrate how the guidelines could work in a real situation. The plan includes an complete land use proposal for the site, plan graphics, individual perspective drawings that illustrate character, and explanations of various components or details of the plan meet the goals established in the guidelines.

Like many cities in the western United States, Tucson, Arizona, was developed on a geometrically determined grid system, with streets aligned with a preset north-south/east-west alignment that paid little heed to the area's natural features and topography. Through necessity, certain watercourses were maintained to help deal with the occasional and sometimes severe flood waters that converge upon the area - however, these features were hidden within, or in some cases under, the urban matrix. This study seeks to examine how secondary watercourses can be partnered with other open space features to create a regional greenway system that connects desirable destinations throughout the city. Special focus is placed upon identification of public open spaces and amenities as destinations. Through the integration of destination-based design, greenway experiences become more rewarding and thus more valuable to the user, motivating preservation of these corridors which would ultimately benefit both the community and the natural environment.

The greenway movement has been evolving since the 19th century, with the creation of axes in cities, along with boulevards, and Olmsted’s parkway concept. The industrial revolution caused an increase of awareness in ecology, along with a set of park and ecologic network projects that aimed towards conservation and sustainability. At present, these corridors are mainly known as the term greenway, with various authors highlighting their connecting, recreation, leisure, environmental and patrimonial conservation and protection functions. They also fall into different categories, such as river corridors, recreation corridors, ecologic corridors, historic/scenic/cultural corridors and greenway network. Integrated inside recreation corridors’ typology are trails that used old rail-ways, canals, waterlines and ridgelines, so, linear routes that obtain new functions. Railways have been highly intervened upon, in the last decades, with very well-known projects such as the Promenade Plantée, in Paris, and the High Line, in New York. Portugal has been reusing old railroads, following REFER’s (current IP, S.A.) “Ecotrail” Strategic Plan (“Plano Estratégico de Ecopistas”), in order to project trails, for the inhabitants, in non-motorized paths that preserve the environment and quality of life. With 11 of these trails inaugurated and 5 to intervene, Aljustrel’s railway is one of the later, inserted in a municipality rich in mining history and ecologic value. A proposal for a greenway in Aljustrel, inserted in recreation corridor’s typology, has all the potential to also be considered an ecological and historic/scenic/cultural corridor. Therefore, the intervention of this path aims at sustainable corridor that offers a recreational, ecological and patrimonial space to the locals and visitors, through a plan that includes three different yet combined routes.

The focus of this research is on re-design of degraded riparian systems in a desert climate and urban context. Specifically, it explores a landscape approach for rehabilitating the Tucson’s Arroyo Chico Wash. Analyses were performed to assess the site condition within its context to determine an appropriate treatment that addresses social and ecological functions. In particular, a greenway plan that implements water management infrastructure was designed on the site, creating social and ecological benefits for surrounding communities. Ultimately, it is the author’s intent to establish a framework and principles for similar riparian projects in urban environments.

There is increasing popularity for greenway projects that utilize stream and river corridors. Benefits encompass many social and environmental values. Although these corridors can accommodate multiple uses, conflicts can occur. Public education may be used to manage these conflicts. Greenway education programs are common, but the role that these programs play is not often well defined. This thesis investigates what role public environmental education is playing in greenway projects today. There are many excellent greenway education programs with good public support. Many elements of these programs are very successful, while other elements need further research and refinement. The success of today's programs are an encouraging indication of the even greater potential of future programs.

Green infrastructure is a new term with old principles that address the protection of valuable open space through the use of connected natural areas. Through implementation of green infrastructure, communities can experience environmental, social, and economical benefits such as increased biodiversity, improved human health, and increased property values. In order to determine the specific opportunities and constraints municipalities face when implementing green infrastructure, MetroGreen was examined. MetroGreen is a greenways plan for the Kansas City Metropolitan area. The plan was studied as a whole, as well as in more detail in two different municipalities: Platte County, MO and Lenexa, KS. Eight planners, landscape architects, Park and Recreation employees, and public administrators involved with MetroGreen were interviewed to document their experiences. From these interviews three categories were identified as being closely related to successful implementation of regional green infrastructure: management, education, and funding. It was found that in order to implement green infrastructure successfully, leadership of a civic-advisory group, private entity, or non-profit organization is needed; regional dedicated funding is crucial; principles should relate to broader societal issues such as storm water and health; partnerships should be created at all levels through city, county, and citizen organizations to aid in connectivity; and public support can contribute a significant amount to the progress made. These findings serve as an analysis of regional implementation of green infrastructure, in order for professionals and community members to learn from the experiences of MetroGreen.

Global sensitivity analysis has a key role to play in the design and parameterization of functional-structural plant growth models (FSPM) which combine the description of plant structural development (organogenesis and geometry) and functional growth (biomass accumulation and allocation). Models of this type generally describe many interacting processes, count a large number of parameters, and their computational cost can be important. The general objective of this thesis is to develop a proper methodology for the sensitivity analysis of functional structural plant models and to investigate how sensitivity analysis can help for the design and parameterization of such models as well as providing insights for the understanding of underlying biological processes. Our contribution can be summarized in two parts: from the methodology point of view, we first improved the performance of the existing Sobol's method to compute sensitivity indices in terms of computational efficiency, with a better control of the estimation error for Monte Carlo simulation, and we also designed a proper strategy of analysis for complex biophysical systems; from the application point of view, we implemented our strategy for 3 FSPMs with different levels of complexity, and analyzed the results from different perspectives (model parameterization, model diagnosis).

It would be an exaggeration to claim that the history of a great industry like shipbuilding in Britain, can be fully understood by concentrating on the history of only one of the many companies that contributed to the developers. However, Scotts of Greenock represent a case study that in many ways encapsulates the critical ingredients which came together to project British shipbuilding from purely local significance to world leadership between the late eighteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. The roots of modern British shipbuilding lie in the craft industry based on wood and sail, one dominated by small scale family and partnership enterprises typical of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The Scotts grew out of this milieu, their family firm dating from 1711, and their survival from that date to the 1980s, marking them out as the longest surviving and oldest firm in British shipbuilding, probably the longest established shipbuilding enterprise in the world. Survival in the small scale world of local markets for wood and sail demanded ingenuity and flexibility, together with a willingness to tackle almost any type of related trade. The Scotts excelled in this unpredictable and opportunistic environment. In Chapter 1 which examines the characteristics of the family, their enterprise in the first century of activity between 1711 and 1820, the foundation of their success is set out.

The main purpose of the thesis is to locate the study of women's protest within broader feminist debates. A critical analysis of feminist theory, methodology and practice uncovers complex problems entailed in taking account of commonality and difference in women's experience. On the basis of the study, I argue for a politically engaged feminism which includes diversity of women's interests and is committed to examining the tensions between commonality and difference. The data strongly support structural analysis underpinning experience rather than disembodied post-modernist constructions of women's fragmented identities. Principles of grounded theory and feminist methods are employed to explore women’s experiences of the Greenham protest and the 1984-5 miners' strike. The data is synthesised through themes of class and gender which emerge from it and which inform our understanding of the processes of engagement and disengagement with protest. The separate contexts of women's struggles and the links which they endeavoured to make across protest are explored through the voices of women activists. The solidaristic ideals of the miners' strike are found to be tempered by the extent of women’s support and by the contradictions which emerged for women confronted by the patriarchal power of the NUM. Orientations to Greenham suggest a fragile unity around ideals of a common womanhood which would overcome all other differences between women. Links across protest are shown to be affected by class difference, which if not an insuperable barrier to collective action, indicate significant problems in achieving a common voice for women. The study suggests that romantic ideals of sisterhood and a common womanhood, far from supporting the struggle of affiliation and co-operation between women, obscure the power differences between them. Recognition of these differences and others which potentially divide women is seen to be essential to the development of an effective feminist theory and practice.

My dissertation examines women's unique techniques and cultures of communication at the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp in Newbury, England between 1982-1985. Often referred to by participants as one of the "last movements before the internet," I look at Greenham as a site through which to think about how activists' communication and cultural practices in the 1980s shaped activist uses of the worldwide web and other new media technologies central to contemporary struggles. I argue that social movement media such as videos, newsletters, postcards, songs and songbooks both create movement culture at the time of their production, and carry movement ideas and their infrastructures into the future. A story told orally, a songbook, a manifesto, a recorded interview, a picture of a mass demonstration, all circulate across time and space. Through this movement, ideas and artifacts are transformed and incorporated as different people encounter and make meaning out of these cultural texts in different ways.

The thesis is a sociological study of the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp. It addresses the question of how it is possible for women to act collectively to promote social change: primarily, to resist and transform relations of male domination and female subordination, and, secondarily, to resist the forces of militarism. It highlights the importance for feminist sociology of theoretical and substantive attention to women's agency. The thesis offers an analysis of the origins of Greenham, thereby developing a critique of the gender-ignorance of previous theoretical work on social movements and arguing the importance of attention to macro-, ineso- and micro-level processes in the studying of the creation of collective politA.cal action. The particular character and ethos of Greenham as a form of feminist politics is explored, both in terms of the internal workings of the movement and in its actions confronting the outside world. The responses of the forces which were challenged by Greenham are analyzed, in order to assess its impact. Finally, the transformations in consciousness and identity experienced by women who had been involved with Greenham are discussed, contributing both theoretically and substantively to feminist understandings of women's consciousness and identity.

Environmental justice activists and researchers in the last several decades have drawn public attention to the disproportionate exposure to environmental risk (primarily toxicity) that low-income communities and communities of color experience. The environmental justice movement has devoted much less attention to the broader array of environmental issues that affect the welfare of low-income and minority communities. These include risk from natural hazards (like flooding), access to open space, recreational opportunities, and livability. Environmental planning affects and can enhance justice by reducing risks and providing benefits (including benefits not traditionally associated with the environment, such as employment opportunities). I consider planning process issues, community building, use of space, economic issues, safety, livability, and cultural issues to understand the full range of justice implications of environmental planning. This thesis examines the planning and development of the Platte River Greenway in Denver to understand how environmental planning practice relates to justice. Initially planned and developed in the mid- to late-1970s, the Platte River Greenway is a 10.5-mile stretch of trails and pocket parks along an urban river that runs near many low-income and minority communities. The Platte River Greenway contributed to social justice in a number of ways. The planning process, however, did not explicitly engage justice as a goal. The one point early in the process when justice received explicit attention illustrates how such consideration can lead to greater parity in environmental benefits for disadvantaged communities. Based on this case, the thesis argues that justice should be a more explicit goal in environmental planning practice. The thesis offers recommendations for how environmental planners can actively frame and manage environmental planning processes to advance social justice.

Riverfronts and greenways are our retreat to nature within the urban setting. They provide connections, opportunity for recreation, habitat for flora and fauna, and most importantly spaces that encourage exercise and social interaction. When these areas are located within the urban context, they are especially susceptible to the degradation that comes with the development of an area such as pollution, erosion, and in some cases lack of care or maintenance. The riverfront in Wichita suffers from three hindrances that restrict it from becoming an asset to the community and compromises human and ecological health along the river. Limited accessibility, a lack of recreational amenities, and poor environmental quality all contribute to the river being under-utilized. While these three elements compromise the site, the location makes it a prime candidate for transformation, creating a cohesive riverfront that has great potential to be utilized by the residents of a quickly growing downtown area. Through the establishment of these dilemmas a framework that focuses on the access and awareness, recreational amenities, and corridor enhancement can then be applied to the Wichita Riverfront. The Wichita Riverfront will encompass active and passive recreation that promotes human health through exercise, social interaction, and improved ecological conditions.

This study of the physical composition of greenway trail networks focuses on how a trail system interacts with a city, and how the city's population interacts with the trail system. Previous studies have suggested that a trail system's use and length have a symbiotic relationship, while other studies propose that a trail is used in accordance with its location within the city. Most current transportation and ecological studies focus on linkage, and present connectivity as the best condition of a linear system. Sixteen case studies are presented and critiqued according to criteria developed in the paper. Statistical analysis is employed to analyze the numeric data, and recommendations are distilled from the statistical analysis and literature review. It is proposed that the physical nature of a greenway system does not effect the city's commuter cycling levels, and a city's cycling culture is the most influential factor in commuter cycling levels.

This research deals with three different issues. The first two, a site and a community, with their own possibilities and constrains, are going to be the protagonists of this adventure. The third one, the architect-planner, trying to play the role of a facilitator in the process, will translate their needs, rules and solutions into a comprehensive plan that should be suitable for the other two. Interpreting the rules of design, as a tool, the architect here would like to perform his role as a medieval alchemist, acting and waiting in expectation, trying not to interfere to allow the process to flow, but aware that transformations also involves oneself. The main source for this research is the teaching-learning experience at the Young Architects Program, with whom the author is going to share the discovery of the site and the envisioning of a better future. His personal goal is to explore the intimate relationship between ideal form, originated in the minds and images of each one of us, compared with the possibilities for realization after the filter of social, political and economic forces. This will be a teaching and learning experience to confront utopia and reality, within a given urban design problem. The experience of the first four months has been recorded in seven chapters and six journals, that in the form of a diary, carry the observations and reflections of the first approach to the case studied, as the result of the everyday contact with the space and the people.

Run-up of long waves in sloping U-shaped bays is studied analytically in the framework of the 1-D nonlinear shallow-water theory. By assuming that the wave flow is uniform along the cross-section, the 2-D nonlinear shallow-water equations are reduced to a linear semi-axis variable-coefficient 1-D wave equation via the generalized Carrier-Greenspan transformation (Rybkin et al., 2014). A spectral solution is developed by solving the linear semiaxis variable-coefficient 1-D equation via separation of variables and then applying the inverse Carrier-Greenspan transform. To compute the run-up of a given long wave a numerical method is developed to find the eigenfunction decomposition required for the spectral solution in the linearized system. The run-up of a long wave in a bathymetry characteristic of a narrow canyon is then examined.

Riparian corridors are unique ecosystems, established normally along the river margins forms dense patches of vegetation adapted to water and soil dynamics. It forms a “continuum” of higher biodiversity then the surroundings, commonly observed in Portugal mainland, with its dry Mediterranean climate. The aim of this study is the ecological restoration of Cobrão’s riparian corridor on Lezírias Company, a state-owned agricultural and forestry farmstead, located near Tagus estuary, not far from Lisbon. Lezírias Company property has most of its area covered by cork oak woodlands, integrated on a managed agro-silvo pastoral system. It is under this context that Cobrão’s stream riparian corridor is subjected. This stream’s longitudinal profile has suffered many anthropological changes throughout the years, mostly for agricultural purposes, affecting the riparian corridor’s ecological status. This study will focus, firstly on the regional and local landscape, and climate characterization, as well as the typical Mediterranean riparian ecosystems and finally an overall national and European legislative approach relative to water, land management and conservation. Afterwards, the proposal will aim the ecological renaturalisation and will recommend, on Cobrão’s riparian corridor, new accesses and cycling and pedestrian paths. Lastly, this proposal will contemplate an integrated long term management plan

Our water bodies have functioned as a critical transportation network, moving people, raw materials, products and goods across countries and continents. Starting as hubs of shipping, trade, and commerce, water bodies were the center of social and economic life of early cities. Technological advances in freight transport spelled the eventual demise of urban ports. This transformation has left vast swathes of vacant, urban waterfront property under-used, neglected, and disconnected from cities that once thrived along the water. This under-utilized land is now seen as a resource for revitalizing urban cores. Cities are looking to reclaim their once prosperous waterfronts (Fisher et al. 2004). Detroit’s riverfront has long been plagued by industry and pollution. For the past 25 years, Detroit has been striving to turn its dilapidated shoreline into a thriving public asset. Today, three and a half miles of the Detroit RiverWalk stretching from Joe Louis Arena east to Gabriel Richard Park have been completed and is open to the public (Brown 2007). Designs are currently being developed to extend the RiverWalk west to Ambassador Bridge, but no studies are planned for the east end toward Water Works Park and beyond(Brown 2007). The existing eastern terminus of Detroit’s RiverWalk does not allow access to the riverfront from neighborhoods that lie to the north and east. Residents have expressed growing interest in extending the RiverWalk and greenway connections to promote use (The Villages Community Development Corporation 2010). How can the Detroit RiverWalk be configured to extend eastward in order to connect neighborhoods and communities to the waterfront, provide amenities in waterfront parks, and create pedestrian greenway linkages? The Detroit riverfront will be accessible to surrounding neighborhoods with the east extension of the RiverWalk, redesign of waterfront parks, and greenway linkages which connect communities with the waterfront and amenities. Humans have a natural attraction to water; therefore “the public increasingly desires and expects access to the water’s edge” (Brown 2007). Pedestrian access is fundamental, particularly linking outlying areas to the water’s edge (Marshall 2001). The RiverWalk extension consists of research of waterfront theory, greenway practices, and the existing riverfront. Critical theory principles and contextual information will be extruded and organized into key components: Extend, Connect, and Provide. These components will outline the analysis, programming, and design phases in order to create a coherent master plan. Detroit can be a precedent for greenway and waterfront development in residential neighborhoods. The Detroit riverfront can be transformed into a public amenity for residents and visitors to benefit, enjoy, and appreciate the power of our fundamental resource: water.

This study provides a strategy from which Economy, Indiana may find structure for future improvement and growth, en route to establishing this Town as a model community for small, rural Indiana towns adjoining rails-to-trails networks. After conducting a visual inventory of the Town, significant physical design components were selected for analysis, including land use, circulation, streetscape, vegetation, buildings/structures, park area, open space/vacant land, and a surveyed historic district. The evidence suggests that even though most of Economy's original visual historic patterns and components still exist, they are in a continual decline. Using the Cardinal Greenway rails-to-trails project as a catalyst, the recommendations will assist the improvement of Economy's visual character, and take advantage of rails-to trails tourism as one means of revitalization.

Plant architecture implies the development of both topological and geometrical structure over time, which determines resource acquisition, in the meantime interacts with physiological processes. However it has long been overlooked in traditional community dynamics models. Based on plant architecture, functional-structural plant models (FSPM) have showed their particular capability in addressing questions like interactions between plant and environment (e.g. light interception), between structure development and growth (e.g. carbon allocation), as they take into account morphogenesis with organ-level explicit descriptions. Anyway, high demand of time and memory for simulation and inverse calculation prevents FSPM from further agricultural or sylvicultural practice. This thesis attempts the combination of a mathematic FSPM GreenLab and a crop model or an empirical forest model (EFM) to introduce individual-based architectural support for community growth study. In the case of maize, disagreement from stand level (by crop model PILOTE) and individual level (by GreenLab) growth simulations implies different emergence time of individuals, which is used to quantify the distribution. By supposing that theoretical projective area (Sp) is determined by the growth situation and the final size of individual architecture, the variance of Sp is reversely computed with the variance of organ compartment measurements to characterize individual variability. In the case of Black pine, architecture dynamics built in GreenLab according to Rauh's model (architecture model for pine tree) are adapted to the simulation of an EFM PNN. As a consequence, thinning scenarios are well incorporated in the final stand visualization. From these preliminary applications, following conclusions can be drawn: (i) FSPM is able to provide individual performances (i.e. organ development and expansion) inside an area of crop field for crop models. (ii) The crop model may regulate the combined form of individuals from integral level. Both aspects are significant to deepen understanding of stand growth. (iii) Architecture conceptions integrated in FSPM may be adapted to EFM simulations for a data-driven visualization. (iv) EFM can guarantee ecological/sylvicultural function for 3D stand visualization. To take into consideration biomass processes, additional observations are needed. As models are independent in combinations, the same methods can be extended to linkage with other stand models

Urban greenway trails are emerging as potential tourist attractions in cities and are well recognized for their recreation opportunities in general. The study presented an opportunity to expand the scope of aesthetic response research into the realm of urban greenway trails. The concept of likability (Nasar, 1998) was used as a guiding concept in the study. In order to gather data for the study, a web-based virtual tour was developed and implemented. Treatments were assigned to 6 groups that viewed two urban greenway trail corridors. Each trail had three treatments including the existing trail condition, a manipulated trail condition, and a reverse in direction of the existing trail condition. Analyses were conducted to 1) identify dimensions of aesthetic responses, 2) examine relationships between cognitive evaluation, affective response, trail characteristics, and likability, and 3) evaluate specific greenway trail characteristics and their relationships to the trail experience. Results indicated five aesthetic dimensions of the greenway trail corridors. The cognitive dimensions were maintenance, distinctiveness, and naturalness and the affective dimensions were pleasantness and arousal. Pleasantness and distinctiveness were the strongest predictors of likability in urban greenway trails. In terms of greenway trail characteristics, six of eight specific characteristics had predictive value in relation to how inviting the virtual trail was to the viewer. Finally, several greenway trail characteristics had significant influences on human perception and the likability of trail environments. This study proposed a new way of conceptualizing likability and a model of relationships leading to likability. One of the major implications of this study is to identify a way to improve physical conditions of greenway corridors in urban areas based on aesthetic responses. The study also implied that greenways can encompass natural or man-made features and can be managed and developed as a tourist attraction while providing local opportunities in cities. Aesthetic quality influences perceived quality of life and sense of well-being. Findings of the study can help enhance the aesthetic quality of the greenway trails that can contribute to sustainable development in various tourism and recreation settings.

The objective of the thesis is to improve plant yield through optimization and optimal control based on the GreenLab plant growth model. Therefore, the thesis proposed a methodology for investigation of plant yield improvement, whose characteristics are that (1) investigations are all based on the functional-structural plant growth model GreenLab and (2) heuristic optimization algorithm and optimal control techniques are applied to the plant growth model in order to improve plant yield. By applying optimization techniques on different species of plants (crops or trees) and for different kinds of optimization problems, common characteristics that a plant with high yield should possess were obtained. The optimal results in the thesis revealed the source-sink dynamics during the plant growth. The optimization results can be considered as references to guide breeding for ideotype and to improve cultivation modes. The optimization application of GreenLab could thus be possibly used to the agricultural decision support system. To achieve the aims of the thesis, the thesis investigated the effects of endogenous factors and exogenous environmental factors of plant growth on plant yield separately. First, given environmental conditions, the thesis investigated endogenous factors, and then the thesis did optimal control on exogenous environmental factors given plant genotype. Therefore, the problems investigated in the thesis consist of general optimization problems and optimal control problems. The main contributions of the thesis include following issues: According to the species of plants, single optimization problems, multi-objective optimization problems and optimization problems with constraints with respect to plant endogenous factors were formulated and investigated, in order to find the ideotype of plants with high plant yield. A population based algorithm is more suitable for the optimization problems in this thesis. Due to its better performance compared with other heuristic optimization algorithms, all optimization problems were solved by a population-based, heuristic optimization algorithm, namely Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Optimal control on the pruning strategy was formulated and investigated in the thesis. As GreenLab can be considered as discrete dynamic system and the objective function of the optimal control problem is analytical, the gradient based method, which is based on the variational approach and Lagrange theory, was used to solve the optimal control problem. Moreover, the optimal solutions were compared with the ones found by PSO, in order to validate the PSO method. The insect population dynamics was modeled mathematically, which was compatible with the plant model GreenLab in terms of spatial and temporal scales, to study the effect of biotic factors on plant growth. The interaction among plants, pests and auxiliaries was implemented, and the ecosystem model, which involves the three tri-trophic components, was thus developed in the thesis. The tri-trophic ecosystem model can simulate the insect population dynamics and the plant growth with consideration of the interaction of insects. Moreover, the tri-trophic ecosystem model considered the partition of individuals in the insect population among plant organs, which is not taken into account in the previous works. A global sensitivity analysis method Morris method was used to analyze the most important parameters and the least influential parameters to model outputs of interest. Through optimization on pest management techniques, the optimal strategies of the application of the pest management techniques were obtained. Estimation of GreenLab parameters with about 400 sets of observation data of 44 tomato genotypes was done in the thesis, by using a generalized non-linear least square algorithm. Taking the estimated parameter values as parameter space, the GreenLab model parameters were optimized, in order to maximize the fruit yield. Through the analysis of the correlation of estimated and optimal parameters with the fruit yield by statistical analysis methods, the most important parameters that result in the difference of fruit yield were found. According to the correlation and optimization results, the phenotypic differences among genotypes were explained from the physiological point of view.

Minimizing inbreeding depression and maintaining genetic diversity are central goals of conservation programs, including the Greenback Recovery Program (GRP), an interagency effort to protect the lineage of trout native to the South Platte River drainage in Colorado. The last remaining population of greenback cutthroat trout consists of about 700 individuals found in a three-mile stretch of stream in the Arkansas drainage, outside its native range. The GRP is committed to reintroducing the greenback into its native range in the South Platte. To do so, they are using a hatchery stock founded by 46 wild individuals. Both wild and hatchery populations have limited genetic diversity and deformities are common in the hatchery population.

Recovering the fitness of the hatchery population of greenbacks requires variation in fitness upon which selection can act. I performed crosses between individuals to quantify any remaining variation in fitness. The population had high variation in egg production and fertilization but very little variation in overall offspring survival. This suggests that the hatchery managers should consider alternative sources of genetic diversity, such as individuals from the wild or from other subspecies.

I used a crossing experiment between greenback cutthroat trout and a related subspecies to describe the genomic patterns of recovery of fitness. When greenbacks are crossed with another subspecies, the hybrid offspring have much higher fitness than the pure greenback offspring. I found that the probability of survival has a strong genetic component and that relatedness between the parents is a strong predictor of offspring survival, with offspring from less related greenback parents having higher fitness. This research will help managers decide whether outcrossing is a viable strategy to increase genetic diversity in cutthroat trout.

I explored the barriers to implementing evolutionary restoration tools, which include a reluctance to disrupt the taxonomic integrity of species. Evolutionary restoration is analogous to ecological restoration: both fields face the challenge of choosing appropriate restoration baselines and setting realistic restoration goals. Active interventions to increase gene flow should be considered as a complement to habitat protection and ecological restoration to prevent species decline.

I developed a teaching case study based on cutthroat trout research. The case study gives upper division biology students practice in applying evolutionary concepts to a real-world conservation problem by making evidence-based decisions accounting for uncertainty in real data sets. I used the case of cutthroat trout in Colorado because it requires a fundamental understanding of evolutionary processes such as speciation and hybridization and raises questions about the value of native species and the goals of conservation efforts.

This thesis deals with a shipyard in Scotland, Scott-Lithgow and its working class community. It is made in two different movements. The first part deals with man at work: working conditions, organization of work; the hierarchy within the working class group and its valves, satisfaction at work. The second theme in this part deals with trade-unionism and its different aspects (demarcation between trades, closed shop, skilled workers unionism, unskilled workers unionism. . . ). The third theme is a synthesis of all this through the study of Scottlithgow crisis (1983-84) and its denationalization. The second part of the study deals with man outside the shipyards: man and its environment, man at home his social rituals (pubs, social clubs. . . ) and the social problems he is confronted to. As a resume, this study deals with a whole community at work and outside work, a community confronted to industrial mutations and to major threats putting into questions their way of life and their identity

Greenway trails, or linear community parks, are growing in popularity around the world and are increasingly prevalent in cities of all sizes in the United States. At their best, greenways can provide affordable transportation, access to jobs, safe recreation space, community building, biodiversity protection, stormwater drainage, and air and noise quality benefits. Yet, commonly, neoliberal governance and design of greenways leads to diminished social and environmental design in favor of economic development. Intentional design for social, environmental and economic stability is crucial for successful greenways, though they are often viewed as innately sustainable. Urban Political Ecology (UPE), Actor Network Theory (ANT), and Campbell's Sustainable Development are used together as lenses to better understand the greenway development process and its outcomes. This research is a case study of the Roanoke River Greenway (RRG) in Roanoke, Virginia which was conducted in attempt to discover who benefits from the greenway, in what ways, and by what means. Semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and mapping combined to answer research questions. Participants were eleven neighborhood residents, five greenway commissioners, and five city and regional leaders involved with the greenway. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and grouped into themes, along with map data and field notes. I combined these methods to draw conclusions that shed light on the complex system surrounding the RRG. Conclusions are (1) that residents who live near the greenway and want to use it for recreational purposes as well as the City of Roanoke and its elite class of businessowners and homeowning residents who live near the greenway benefit the most from the RRG benefit because the greenway is catered toward recreation and economic development, in form, function, and process, (2) that the system which enables these benefits and prioritizes their beneficiaries is the greenway's evolving planning process, a system both steeped in mindsets of traditional economic development and exclusive planning aesthetics and imbued with innovative approaches of connecting residents to the outdoor environment, and (3) that Roanoke's greenway movement is strong because of its popularity but is vulnerable, because there are no provisions to officially protect it for the future, in terms of maintenance, increased use, and public opinion. Implications for praxis are that communities with greenway trails should diversify the people and perspectives who have power in the planning practice, that environmental and social design should be addressed directly and consistently in greenway development and maintenance, and greater outreach efforts should be made to residents in order to make the greenways more accessible and welcoming to diverse users. Implications for research are for increased research conducted with low-income and minority residents and on microlevel social and economic impacts in neighborhoods.

Implications for research are investigations into residents who do not use the greenway, for long-term and minority residents.

LE MODELE GREENLAB COMBINE LA MODELISATION DE L'ARCHITECTURE ET DU FONCTIONNEMENT DES PLANTES. BASE SUR DES OBSERVATIONS BOTANIQUES, DANS LA SUITE DES MODELES AMAP, IL EST ECRIT SOUS FORME D'UN SYSTEME DYNAMIQUE DISCRET.
LES TRAVAUX DE CETTE THESE VISENT A AMELIORER LA MODELISATION DE LA CROISSANCE EN INTEGRANT LES INTERACTIONS ENTRE LA CROISSANCE ET LE DEVELOPPEMENT. EN FONCTION DES CONDITIONS EXTERIEURES, LA PLANTE PRODUIT PLUS OU MOINS DE MATIERE, CE QUI A UNE INFLUENCE NON SEULEMENT SUR LE VOLUME DE SES ORGANES, MAIS AUSSI SUR LEUR NOMBRE (FEUILLES, FRUITS), SUR LA RAMIFICATION ET SUR LES CARACTERISTIQUES FONCTIONNELLES DE CERTAINS ORGANES. LA PRISE EN COMPTE DE CES PHENOMENES PERMET DE REPRESENTER LES DIFFERENTES PHASES DE CROISSANCE D'UN ARBRE OU LES CAPACITES D'ADAPTATION D'UNE PLANTE DANS SON ENVIRONNEMENT, CELA GRACE A L'EVOLUTION DYNAMIQUE DU RAPPORT DE L'OFFFRE SUR LA DEMANDE, VARIABLE DE CONTROLE DES DIFFERENTS EVENEMENTS DUS AUX INTERACTIONS ENTRE LA CROISSANCE ET LE DEVELOPPEMENT.
LA CROISSANCE DE LA PLANTE EST MODELISEE DE MANIERE DISCRETE. L'ECRITUTE DU SYSTEME DYNAMIQUE DISCRET CORRESPONDANT A L'AIDE D'UN FORMALISME ADAPTE PERMET DE MENER DES ETUDES DE COMPORTEMENT DU MODELE, ET DE TESTER LA SENSIBILITE AUX PARAMETRES.
CE MODELE CONCEPTUEL DE CROISSANCE DE PLANTES PEUT ETRE APPLIQUEE A DIFFERENTES PLANTES REELLES EN CHERCHANT DES JEUX DE PARAMETRES D'ENTREE DU MODELE PERMETTANT DE REPRODUIRE AU MIEUX LA CROISSANCE DE CES PLANTES.S
