Повний текст джерелаThe greenway movement has been evolving since the 19th century, with the creation of axes in cities, along with boulevards, and Olmsted’s parkway concept. The industrial revolution caused an increase of awareness in ecology, along with a set of park and ecologic network projects that aimed towards conservation and sustainability. At present, these corridors are mainly known as the term greenway, with various authors highlighting their connecting, recreation, leisure, environmental and patrimonial conservation and protection functions. They also fall into different categories, such as river corridors, recreation corridors, ecologic corridors, historic/scenic/cultural corridors and greenway network. Integrated inside recreation corridors’ typology are trails that used old rail-ways, canals, waterlines and ridgelines, so, linear routes that obtain new functions. Railways have been highly intervened upon, in the last decades, with very well-known projects such as the Promenade Plantée, in Paris, and the High Line, in New York. Portugal has been reusing old railroads, following REFER’s (current IP, S.A.) “Ecotrail” Strategic Plan (“Plano Estratégico de Ecopistas”), in order to project trails, for the inhabitants, in non-motorized paths that preserve the environment and quality of life. With 11 of these trails inaugurated and 5 to intervene, Aljustrel’s railway is one of the later, inserted in a municipality rich in mining history and ecologic value. A proposal for a greenway in Aljustrel, inserted in recreation corridor’s typology, has all the potential to also be considered an ecological and historic/scenic/cultural corridor. Therefore, the intervention of this path aims at sustainable corridor that offers a recreational, ecological and patrimonial space to the locals and visitors, through a plan that includes three different yet combined routes.

Green infrastructure is a new term with old principles that address the protection of valuable open space through the use of connected natural areas. Through implementation of green infrastructure, communities can experience environmental, social, and economical benefits such as increased biodiversity, improved human health, and increased property values. In order to determine the specific opportunities and constraints municipalities face when implementing green infrastructure, MetroGreen was examined. MetroGreen is a greenways plan for the Kansas City Metropolitan area. The plan was studied as a whole, as well as in more detail in two different municipalities: Platte County, MO and Lenexa, KS. Eight planners, landscape architects, Park and Recreation employees, and public administrators involved with MetroGreen were interviewed to document their experiences. From these interviews three categories were identified as being closely related to successful implementation of regional green infrastructure: management, education, and funding. It was found that in order to implement green infrastructure successfully, leadership of a civic-advisory group, private entity, or non-profit organization is needed; regional dedicated funding is crucial; principles should relate to broader societal issues such as storm water and health; partnerships should be created at all levels through city, county, and citizen organizations to aid in connectivity; and public support can contribute a significant amount to the progress made. These findings serve as an analysis of regional implementation of green infrastructure, in order for professionals and community members to learn from the experiences of MetroGreen.

Environmental justice activists and researchers in the last several decades have drawn public attention to the disproportionate exposure to environmental risk (primarily toxicity) that low-income communities and communities of color experience. The environmental justice movement has devoted much less attention to the broader array of environmental issues that affect the welfare of low-income and minority communities. These include risk from natural hazards (like flooding), access to open space, recreational opportunities, and livability. Environmental planning affects and can enhance justice by reducing risks and providing benefits (including benefits not traditionally associated with the environment, such as employment opportunities). I consider planning process issues, community building, use of space, economic issues, safety, livability, and cultural issues to understand the full range of justice implications of environmental planning. This thesis examines the planning and development of the Platte River Greenway in Denver to understand how environmental planning practice relates to justice. Initially planned and developed in the mid- to late-1970s, the Platte River Greenway is a 10.5-mile stretch of trails and pocket parks along an urban river that runs near many low-income and minority communities. The Platte River Greenway contributed to social justice in a number of ways. The planning process, however, did not explicitly engage justice as a goal. The one point early in the process when justice received explicit attention illustrates how such consideration can lead to greater parity in environmental benefits for disadvantaged communities. Based on this case, the thesis argues that justice should be a more explicit goal in environmental planning practice. The thesis offers recommendations for how environmental planners can actively frame and manage environmental planning processes to advance social justice.

Riverfronts and greenways are our retreat to nature within the urban setting. They provide connections, opportunity for recreation, habitat for flora and fauna, and most importantly spaces that encourage exercise and social interaction. When these areas are located within the urban context, they are especially susceptible to the degradation that comes with the development of an area such as pollution, erosion, and in some cases lack of care or maintenance. The riverfront in Wichita suffers from three hindrances that restrict it from becoming an asset to the community and compromises human and ecological health along the river. Limited accessibility, a lack of recreational amenities, and poor environmental quality all contribute to the river being under-utilized. While these three elements compromise the site, the location makes it a prime candidate for transformation, creating a cohesive riverfront that has great potential to be utilized by the residents of a quickly growing downtown area. Through the establishment of these dilemmas a framework that focuses on the access and awareness, recreational amenities, and corridor enhancement can then be applied to the Wichita Riverfront. The Wichita Riverfront will encompass active and passive recreation that promotes human health through exercise, social interaction, and improved ecological conditions.

This research deals with three different issues. The first two, a site and a community, with their own possibilities and constrains, are going to be the protagonists of this adventure. The third one, the architect-planner, trying to play the role of a facilitator in the process, will translate their needs, rules and solutions into a comprehensive plan that should be suitable for the other two. Interpreting the rules of design, as a tool, the architect here would like to perform his role as a medieval alchemist, acting and waiting in expectation, trying not to interfere to allow the process to flow, but aware that transformations also involves oneself. The main source for this research is the teaching-learning experience at the Young Architects Program, with whom the author is going to share the discovery of the site and the envisioning of a better future. His personal goal is to explore the intimate relationship between ideal form, originated in the minds and images of each one of us, compared with the possibilities for realization after the filter of social, political and economic forces. This will be a teaching and learning experience to confront utopia and reality, within a given urban design problem. The experience of the first four months has been recorded in seven chapters and six journals, that in the form of a diary, carry the observations and reflections of the first approach to the case studied, as the result of the everyday contact with the space and the people.

Повний текст джерелаRun-up of long waves in sloping U-shaped bays is studied analytically in the framework of the 1-D nonlinear shallow-water theory. By assuming that the wave flow is uniform along the cross-section, the 2-D nonlinear shallow-water equations are reduced to a linear semi-axis variable-coefficient 1-D wave equation via the generalized Carrier-Greenspan transformation (Rybkin et al., 2014). A spectral solution is developed by solving the linear semiaxis variable-coefficient 1-D equation via separation of variables and then applying the inverse Carrier-Greenspan transform. To compute the run-up of a given long wave a numerical method is developed to find the eigenfunction decomposition required for the spectral solution in the linearized system. The run-up of a long wave in a bathymetry characteristic of a narrow canyon is then examined.

Повний текст джерелаRiparian corridors are unique ecosystems, established normally along the river margins forms dense patches of vegetation adapted to water and soil dynamics. It forms a “continuum” of higher biodiversity then the surroundings, commonly observed in Portugal mainland, with its dry Mediterranean climate. The aim of this study is the ecological restoration of Cobrão’s riparian corridor on Lezírias Company, a state-owned agricultural and forestry farmstead, located near Tagus estuary, not far from Lisbon. Lezírias Company property has most of its area covered by cork oak woodlands, integrated on a managed agro-silvo pastoral system. It is under this context that Cobrão’s stream riparian corridor is subjected. This stream’s longitudinal profile has suffered many anthropological changes throughout the years, mostly for agricultural purposes, affecting the riparian corridor’s ecological status. This study will focus, firstly on the regional and local landscape, and climate characterization, as well as the typical Mediterranean riparian ecosystems and finally an overall national and European legislative approach relative to water, land management and conservation. Afterwards, the proposal will aim the ecological renaturalisation and will recommend, on Cobrão’s riparian corridor, new accesses and cycling and pedestrian paths. Lastly, this proposal will contemplate an integrated long term management plan

Our water bodies have functioned as a critical transportation network, moving people, raw materials, products and goods across countries and continents. Starting as hubs of shipping, trade, and commerce, water bodies were the center of social and economic life of early cities. Technological advances in freight transport spelled the eventual demise of urban ports. This transformation has left vast swathes of vacant, urban waterfront property under-used, neglected, and disconnected from cities that once thrived along the water. This under-utilized land is now seen as a resource for revitalizing urban cores. Cities are looking to reclaim their once prosperous waterfronts (Fisher et al. 2004). Detroit’s riverfront has long been plagued by industry and pollution. For the past 25 years, Detroit has been striving to turn its dilapidated shoreline into a thriving public asset. Today, three and a half miles of the Detroit RiverWalk stretching from Joe Louis Arena east to Gabriel Richard Park have been completed and is open to the public (Brown 2007). Designs are currently being developed to extend the RiverWalk west to Ambassador Bridge, but no studies are planned for the east end toward Water Works Park and beyond(Brown 2007). The existing eastern terminus of Detroit’s RiverWalk does not allow access to the riverfront from neighborhoods that lie to the north and east. Residents have expressed growing interest in extending the RiverWalk and greenway connections to promote use (The Villages Community Development Corporation 2010). How can the Detroit RiverWalk be configured to extend eastward in order to connect neighborhoods and communities to the waterfront, provide amenities in waterfront parks, and create pedestrian greenway linkages? The Detroit riverfront will be accessible to surrounding neighborhoods with the east extension of the RiverWalk, redesign of waterfront parks, and greenway linkages which connect communities with the waterfront and amenities. Humans have a natural attraction to water; therefore “the public increasingly desires and expects access to the water’s edge” (Brown 2007). Pedestrian access is fundamental, particularly linking outlying areas to the water’s edge (Marshall 2001). The RiverWalk extension consists of research of waterfront theory, greenway practices, and the existing riverfront. Critical theory principles and contextual information will be extruded and organized into key components: Extend, Connect, and Provide. These components will outline the analysis, programming, and design phases in order to create a coherent master plan. Detroit can be a precedent for greenway and waterfront development in residential neighborhoods. The Detroit riverfront can be transformed into a public amenity for residents and visitors to benefit, enjoy, and appreciate the power of our fundamental resource: water.

Повний текст джерелаPlant architecture implies the development of both topological and geometrical structure over time, which determines resource acquisition, in the meantime interacts with physiological processes. However it has long been overlooked in traditional community dynamics models. Based on plant architecture, functional-structural plant models (FSPM) have showed their particular capability in addressing questions like interactions between plant and environment (e.g. light interception), between structure development and growth (e.g. carbon allocation), as they take into account morphogenesis with organ-level explicit descriptions. Anyway, high demand of time and memory for simulation and inverse calculation prevents FSPM from further agricultural or sylvicultural practice. This thesis attempts the combination of a mathematic FSPM GreenLab and a crop model or an empirical forest model (EFM) to introduce individual-based architectural support for community growth study. In the case of maize, disagreement from stand level (by crop model PILOTE) and individual level (by GreenLab) growth simulations implies different emergence time of individuals, which is used to quantify the distribution. By supposing that theoretical projective area (Sp) is determined by the growth situation and the final size of individual architecture, the variance of Sp is reversely computed with the variance of organ compartment measurements to characterize individual variability. In the case of Black pine, architecture dynamics built in GreenLab according to Rauh's model (architecture model for pine tree) are adapted to the simulation of an EFM PNN. As a consequence, thinning scenarios are well incorporated in the final stand visualization. From these preliminary applications, following conclusions can be drawn: (i) FSPM is able to provide individual performances (i.e. organ development and expansion) inside an area of crop field for crop models. (ii) The crop model may regulate the combined form of individuals from integral level. Both aspects are significant to deepen understanding of stand growth. (iii) Architecture conceptions integrated in FSPM may be adapted to EFM simulations for a data-driven visualization. (iv) EFM can guarantee ecological/sylvicultural function for 3D stand visualization. To take into consideration biomass processes, additional observations are needed. As models are independent in combinations, the same methods can be extended to linkage with other stand models

Повний текст джерелаMinimizing inbreeding depression and maintaining genetic diversity are central goals of conservation programs, including the Greenback Recovery Program (GRP), an interagency effort to protect the lineage of trout native to the South Platte River drainage in Colorado. The last remaining population of greenback cutthroat trout consists of about 700 individuals found in a three-mile stretch of stream in the Arkansas drainage, outside its native range. The GRP is committed to reintroducing the greenback into its native range in the South Platte. To do so, they are using a hatchery stock founded by 46 wild individuals. Both wild and hatchery populations have limited genetic diversity and deformities are common in the hatchery population.
Recovering the fitness of the hatchery population of greenbacks requires variation in fitness upon which selection can act. I performed crosses between individuals to quantify any remaining variation in fitness. The population had high variation in egg production and fertilization but very little variation in overall offspring survival. This suggests that the hatchery managers should consider alternative sources of genetic diversity, such as individuals from the wild or from other subspecies.
I used a crossing experiment between greenback cutthroat trout and a related subspecies to describe the genomic patterns of recovery of fitness. When greenbacks are crossed with another subspecies, the hybrid offspring have much higher fitness than the pure greenback offspring. I found that the probability of survival has a strong genetic component and that relatedness between the parents is a strong predictor of offspring survival, with offspring from less related greenback parents having higher fitness. This research will help managers decide whether outcrossing is a viable strategy to increase genetic diversity in cutthroat trout.
I explored the barriers to implementing evolutionary restoration tools, which include a reluctance to disrupt the taxonomic integrity of species. Evolutionary restoration is analogous to ecological restoration: both fields face the challenge of choosing appropriate restoration baselines and setting realistic restoration goals. Active interventions to increase gene flow should be considered as a complement to habitat protection and ecological restoration to prevent species decline.
I developed a teaching case study based on cutthroat trout research. The case study gives upper division biology students practice in applying evolutionary concepts to a real-world conservation problem by making evidence-based decisions accounting for uncertainty in real data sets. I used the case of cutthroat trout in Colorado because it requires a fundamental understanding of evolutionary processes such as speciation and hybridization and raises questions about the value of native species and the goals of conservation efforts.

The first part deals with man at work: working conditions, organization of work; the hierarchy within the working class group and its valves, satisfaction at work. The second theme in this part deals with trade-unionism and its different aspects (demarcation between trades, closed shop, skilled workers unionism, unskilled workers unionism. . . ). The third theme is a synthesis of all this through the study of Scottlithgow crisis (1983-84) and its denationalization. The second part of the study deals with man outside the shipyards: man and its environment, man at home his social rituals (pubs, social clubs. . . ) and the social problems he is confronted to. As a resume, this study deals with a whole community at work and outside work, a community confronted to industrial mutations and to major threats putting into questions their way of life and their identity

Greenway trails, or linear community parks, grow in popularity around the world and are increasingly prevalent in cities of all sizes in the United States. At their best, greenways can provide affordable transportation, access to jobs, safe recreation space, community building, biodiversity protection, stormwater drainage, and air and noise quality benefits. Yet, commonly, neoliberal governance and design of greenways leads to diminished social and environmental design in favor of economic development. Intentional design for social, environmental and economic stability is crucial for successful greenways, though they are often viewed as innately sustainable. Urban Political Ecology (UPE), Actor Network Theory (ANT), and Campbell's Sustainable Development are used together as lenses to better understand the greenway development process and its outcomes. This research is a case study of the Roanoke River Greenway (RRG) in Roanoke, Virginia which was conducted in attempt to discover who benefits from the greenway, in what ways, and by what means. Semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and mapping combined to answer research questions. Participants were eleven neighborhood residents, five greenway commissioners, and five city and regional leaders involved with the greenway. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and grouped into themes, along with map data and field notes. These combined to draw conclusions that shed light on the complex system surrounding the RRG. Conclusions are (1) that residents who live near the greenway and want to use it for recreational purposes as well as the City of Roanoke and its elite class of businessowners and homeowning residents who live near the greenway benefit the most from the RRG benefit because the greenway is catered toward recreation and economic development, in form, function, and process, (2) that the system which enables these benefits and prioritizes their beneficiaries is the greenway's evolving planning process, a system both steeped in mindsets of traditional economic development and exclusive planning aesthetics and imbued with innovative approaches of connecting residents to the outdoor environment, and (3) that Roanoke's greenway movement is strong because of its popularity but is vulnerable, because there are no provisions to officially protect it for the future, in terms of maintenance, increased use, and public opinion. Implications for praxis are that communities with greenway trails should diversify the people and perspectives who have power in the planning practice, that environmental and social design should be addressed directly and consistently in greenway development and maintenance, and greater outreach efforts should be made to residents in order to make the greenways more accessible and welcoming to diverse users. Implications for research are investigations into residents who do not use the greenway, for long-term and minority residents.
