The tool GraphColl (Brezina et al. 2015) allows collocational networks to be identified within corpora, enabling corpus analysis to go beyond two-way collocation. This paper aims to illustrate the types of linguistic relationships that can appear when more than two words are considered, using graph theory to account for the different types of collocational “shapes” that can be formed within GraphColl networks. Using the reference corpus, the BE06, examples of different types of graphs were obtained and analysed in order to form an understanding of the sorts of relationships between words that occur in particular shapes. The analysis indicates that concepts from graph theory can be usefully integrated into corpus analysis of collocation as well as showing the potential for a more sophisticated understanding of the company that words keep.

The idea that text in a particular field of discourse is organized into lexical patterns, which can be visualized as networks of words that collocate with each other, was originally proposed by Phillips (1983). This idea has important theoretical implications for our understanding of the relationship between the lexis and the text and (ultimately) between the text and the discourse community/the mind of the speaker. Although the approaches to date have offered different possibilities for constructing collocation networks, we argue that they have not yet successfully operationalized some of the desired features of such networks. In this study, we revisit the concept of collocation networks and introduce GraphColl, a new tool developed by the authors that builds collocation networks from user-defined corpora. In a case study using data from McEnery’s (2006a) study of the Society for the Reformation of Manners Corpus (SRMC), we demonstrate that collocation networks provide important insights into meaning relationships in language.

This study aims at shedding light on the linguistic significance of collocation networks in the academic writing context. Following Firth’s principle “You shall know a word by the company it keeps.” The study intends to examine three selected nodes (i.e. research, study, and paper) shared collocations in an academic context. This is achieved by using the corpus linguistic tool; GraphColl in #LancsBox software version 5 which was announced in June 2020 in analyzing selected nodes. The study focuses on academic writing of two corpora which were designed and collected especially to serve the purpose of the study. The corpora consist of a collection of abstracts extracted from two different academic journals that publish for writers from different countries around the world. This corpus-based study aims at examining the significance of chunks of language in texts. The concept of collocations is crucial in corpus linguistics to identify semantic relations. This can help in the teaching and learning processes. Furthermore, this study is conducted to answer the following research questions; first, whether the three words study, paper, and research are used interchangeably in the corpora or not? Second, what are the shared collocational associations surrounding the selected nodes? Finally, it is worth noting that the study of collocations highlights the linguistic features of texts through computational analytical tools that can save time and help to gain objective results systematically. The findings show that ‘research’ and ‘study’ are used rather interchangeably in the writing of the abstracts; however, ‘paper’ has fewer shared collocations in the same academic context.

Abstract This study investigates the use of explicit manifestations of authorial identity (namely self-mention pronouns) and their collocation networks in academic and workplace written texts. Based on a purpose-built corpus of research articles and the Hong Kong Financial Services Corpus (HKFSC), this study used Antconc and Graphcoll to extract and analyze the pronouns and their collocation networks. The statistical analysis shows that the academic register contains significantly more self-mention pronouns than the workplace corpus, which can be attributed to a stronger tendency towards self-positioning. We also identified significant register-specific semantic features of the collocation networks of self-mention pronouns. These findings contribute to our understanding of how self-mention pronouns operate in tandem with their surrounding context in register-specific discourse. Pedagogically, the findings can be useful for workshop-based training for finance students and early-career professionals in this domain to support the development of the discipline-specific writing skills needed for careers in academia and industry.

Анотація:

Магістерську дисертацію присвячено розгляду можливостей корпусної лінгвістики, аналізу основних проблем, з якими стикаються перекладачі технічної літератури під час перекладу спеціалізованих текстів, а також пропозиції щодо уникнення перекладацьких помилок, покращення якості та оптимізації процесу перекладу за допомогою альтернативного підходу – застосування засобів корпусної лінгвістики. Дана робота визначає специфіку якісного перекладу та відповідних вимог. Крім того, надано та класифіковано шляхи подолання різних труднощів перекладу на синтаксичному, семантичному та структурному рівнях у формі перекладацьких прийомів. Представлена дослідницька робота містить практичний аналіз перекладу текстів технічного спрямування, результати якого надали широкі можливості для вивчення корпусу як альтернативного рішення для покращення якості перекладу. Дисертація розглядає типи та критерії для створення належного корпусу. Пропонується практичне застосування корпусу на прикладах для окреслення основних його функцій та можливостей, що сприяють досягненню найповнішого рівня еквівалентності та адекватного перекладу. Дана наукова робота містить досвід розробки корпусу the Nuclear Corpus та його вдалої реалізації з використанням найзручніших корпусних менеджерів. Приділено увагу перевагам застосування корпусу під час перекладу, таким як конкорданс, відносна та абсолютна частотність слів, ключові слова, сполучуваність слів, багатокомпонентні групи, контекстуальне вживання слів. Дана робота спонукає до подальшого вдосконалення корпусу відповідно до певних перекладацьких потреб з метою досягнення найвищого рівня еквівалентності тексту перекладу та тексту оригіналу, задоволення очікувань адресатів перекладу. Робота відкриває перспективи для подальшого вивчення корпусу з метою виявлення нових корисних можливостей для полегшення роботи перекладача.
This Master’s Thesis is devoted to the consideration of corpus linguistics capabilities, investigation of the main problems encountered by technical translators while translating engineering texts and provision of an alternative solution for them to eliminate translation weaknesses, improve quality, and optimize translation itself. The paper defines features of a good quality translation and its requirements. In addition, the ways to overcome various translation difficulties at syntactic, semantic and structural levels are given in the form of recommended translation techniques which are classified according to specified criteria. The given research paper also provides a practical example of technical translation, the analysis of which gives wide opportunities for studying a corpus as an alternative solution for improving the quality of the translation. The thesis presents types and criteria for a good corpus compilation. Practical usage of a corpus with examples is suggested to outline its main functions and opportunities which can assist any translator in achieving the closest equivalency and adequate translation. The following paper shares experience of developing the Nuclear Corpus and its successful implementation while using the most user-friendly corpus managers. The paper also demonstrates the advantages of corpus application during translation compared to other modern technologies used in the process of translation. This research encourages the idea of further corpus development for the specific translation needs in order to make target texts equivalent at the highest level and meet expectations of the addressees. At the same time, the Master’s Thesis makes it possible to study the issue of a corpus further with the purpose to identify new useful opportunities it can provide to facilitate the work of a translator.

Chile es el país mas largo del mundo con sobre 4300 km de longitud y un ancho promedio de 180 km. Armar una red que abastezca de internet al país naturalmente tiende a unir del extremo norte al extremo sur. Esta tendencia suele comprometer la robustez de la red, haciendo que fallas en esta se propaguen dejando incomunicado al país. En el marco de los proyectos InnovaChile CORFO se propone llevar a cabo el proyecto Estudio y Recomendaciones sobre la Resiliencia de la Infraestructura del Internet Chileno .En este proyecto se realizará un mapa que represente como un grafo la infraestructura de lared a nivel país, para luego hacer estudios acerca de la robustez de ésta. El objetivo es entonces resolver el problema de la creación y mantención de un grafo que represente la red física del internet chileno. Para llevar a cabo el objetivo de la memoria se realiza un análisis del estado previo de la labor de crear y mantener la red, para luego describir casos de uso y definir condiciones para completar el desarrollo. Se hace un estudio de tecnologías para apoyar la creación de la solución y se procede con ella. Se agregan features para creación y modificación del grafo, incluyendo un sistema de historial de acciones para hacer time travel sobre este. Se hace pruebas con datos ficticios para luego usar los datos reales previamente recolectados manualmente. Se valida la solución en términos de cumplirse los casos de uso definidos, usabilidad de la solución y cumplimiento de objetivos específicos. El resultado final es una aplicación web que permite la creación y mantención colaborativa de la red de internet chileno.
