The book aims to explain the main aspects of using digital storytelling as a method for employability, career development, reflection, assessment, consultancy, presentation and communication. Through digital storytelling, students begin to comprehend how all the elements of writing a narrative work together and how to manipulate them for the best effects in readers and viewers. But missing from the discussion is the fact that millions of parents on both sides of the class divide are raising their children to listen to God. What impact does a religious upbringing have on their academic trajectories? Drawing on 10 years of survey data with over 3,000 teenagers and over 200 interviews, God, Grades, and Graduation offers a revealing and at times surprising account of how teenagers’ religious upbringing influences their educational pathways from high school to college. God, Grades, and Graduation introduces readers to a childrearing logic that cuts across social class groups and accounts for Americans’ deep relationship with God: religious restraint. This book takes us inside the lives of these teenagers to discover why they achieve higher grades than their peers, why they are more likely to graduate from college, and why boys from lower-middle-class families particularly benefit from religious restraint. This chapter provides an introduction to Sinhala Buddhist music-making, focusing on the domain of drumming in religious ritual. These genres, with their accompanying dances, have become the most esteemed traditional music genres in Sri Lanka. The chapter also considers the ways that nationalism has influenced the use and placement of these genres, discussing a riot that broke out when Sinhala students agitated for Sinhala drumming to be performed at the head of a graduation ceremony at the Tamil-dominated University of Jaffna. The chapter provides basic information on drumming for the caste of drummers, dancers, and ritualists called the Beravā, and discusses the life and work of my drum teacher, a performer of the low-country Sinhala drum (pahata rata beraya, yak beraya).

This chapter assesses whether higher education within the four occupations performs as assumed according to the dominant discourse on graduate labour. The chapter aims to elucidate what the meaning and value of graduate education and university qualifications are within the four graduate occupations under investigation. The chapter examines how we can describe the meaning that higher education has within these occupations, whether the university degree functions as a credential, and to what extent higher education drives career progression. It shows that the significance of higher education differs between the occupations and tends to be overstated. Within a mass system of higher education, university credentials lose much of their value to employers and employees alike, certainly several years after graduation.

This chapter explores the employment experiences of the young people interviewed for a study in 2010. Though conditions were tough for everyone, the study of 20-somethings shows that not everyone experienced the same degree of economic pain. Specifically, those who were from what could be called “elite” backgrounds had an easier time getting jobs even during the recession and were additionally insulated from the worst effects of the downturn by having little or no educational debt. The working- and middle-class young people had a much more difficult time both in securing employment and in dealing with debt. The chapter then looks at the strategies respondents utilized to secure employment after graduation and what has helped and hindered them in their efforts.

Historically, the role of professionals specialized in occupational health and safety (OHS) has emerged from the need to protect employers working in major risk industries such as nuclear plants and large-scale chemical industries in Europe. More recently, a few studies highlighted that the range of activities linked to safety management responsibilities includes monitor and prepare reports, inspection and auditing, regulatory compliance, emergency response, incident investigation, hazard and risk assessment, and training. Additionally, there are some supplementary non-safety related duties, such as including environmental responsibility. Considering that work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMD) are a major burden worldwide, adding up to 1.3 billion cases, more than 100 million years loss of disability-adjusted life years and that such disorders are common causes of disability and sick leave, this topic is highly relevant to OHS professionals. In EU Member States for which data are available, a large majority of all workers report complaints related to musculoskeletal disorders as their most serious work-related health problems. The percentage of workers reporting such complaints as their most serious health problem ranges from 40 % in Luxembourg to 70 % in Czech Republic and Finland. Furthermore, more than half of workers with musculoskeletal disorders reported taking time off work in a 12-month period. In the EU, 26 % of workers with musculoskeletal long-lasting disorders, that is lasting over 3 months, combined with other health problems report more than 8 days of absence per year. Higher Education Institutions (HEI) have a key role in disseminating and increasing accessibility to the most up-to-date evidence available regarding the impact and management of musculoskeletal disorders, to facilitate translation of knowledge to implementation in practice. This way, the Knowledge Alliance Prevent4Work for Preventing Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders has elaborated this document with the most recent and relevant knowledge within the topic. HEI that offer courses within OHS as well as graduation and post-graduation courses for health professionals that work within the area, may benefit from the recommendations presented here.

Several factors can cause damage to the mental health of university students, e.g. academic adaptation, housing change, distance from family and friends, and dealing with stressors regarding new requirements, which need some resources to cope with such situations. The content of this book, from the Master's Dissertation developed by the authors at the Stricto-Sensu Psychology and Health Post-Graduation Program at the Medical School of São José do Rio Preto - FAMERP, aims at describing the presence of mental disorders and demonstrating the implementation of a life-skills training in university students (Medicine and Nursing), randomly chosen in a teaching institution in a medium-sized city, interior of São Paulo state. The participants expressed high symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress in the initial evaluation, however, after the training of group life skills, they showed significant improvements with maintenance of these rates during the follow-up. This training can be stood out to improve the mental health and life skills of the students. It is likely that the intervention group may have helped these students to cope with negative pressures, avoiding risky behaviors, communicating effectively; moreover, coping with adaptations and changes in such academic process. It is worthwhile to point out that this study may encourage further research in relation to mental health and life-skills in university students, and that it will encourage the insertion of programs with these skills training, due to their effectiveness, low cost, the participants´ acceptance, improvement in mental health, and provide increasing academic performance.

Entering Columbia University on scholarship, he distinguished himself as a critic and poet, winning several prestigious awards. But after the success of his columbia Varsity Show, Flair-Flair, for which he wrote the book and lyrics and even some of the music, he dropped out of Columbia to pursue a career on Broadway.

This chapter examines the origins of the BAA, which was fraught with disappointment and difficulties. The nascent BAA sought the two advantages of territorial rights and the reserve clause that other professional team sports league owners possessed, but the league faced competition from an incumbent league—the National Basketball League (NBL). The two basketball leagues contested just one or two cities and were largely able to avoid a ruinous bidding war for players, including graduating college talent. This low level of strife was unique to professional basketball and may have contributed to the eventual success of those teams that survived. The BAA owners also made crucial decisions regarding revenue sharing, team salary caps, and differentiating their product from the college game.

Devido ao fato de nutrir grande admiração pela pesquisadora, resolvi investir numa pesquisa particular em dicionários e/ou glossários (1889-2006) para apresentar a “certidão de nascimento” de algumas palavras africanas que ao longo de pouco mais de um século estão ainda presentes na oralidade e na escrita de africanos e afro-brasileiros. In an increasingly diverse and plural world, the narratives of Pataxó indigenous teachers presented in A formação intercultural em narrativas de professores/as indígenas: um estudo na aldeia Muã Mimatxi reveal us particular ways of reflecting upon education, school and formation which can teach us a lot. The participants of the first FIEI course offered by UFMG - Intercultural Formation of Indigenous Teachers - belong to the Muã Mimatxi village located in Itapecerica, in the west-center region of Minas Gerais State; these teachers provide meaningful lessons on how to deal with cultural differences. Difference is seen as a resource to be incorporated and resignified, depending on the relations with the principles that rule their culture. This graduation course has not only benefited the collective life but it has also helped to revitalize the school, which is the central place of community life. Some of the pedagogical tools learned at the FIEI became meaningful to this group of teachers. Among them, we point out the so called project “Percursos Academicos”, a socio-ecological calendar and the idea of inter culturality. The ways such elements were appropriated and recontextualized have helped us to understand their particular conceptions of the world and the central role the school plays in their lives and in their future life projects.

This book suggests that youth civic development should be promoted by providing young people with opportunities to participate in community life. make four arguments. The first of these is that youth can be part of the solution to the problems of contemporary American democracy. The book then summarizes what political scientists say about contemporary politics and the systemic ills that have allowed ideological polarization to stymie the democratic process. Civic education must be located in the political context in which it occurs. This is because citizen participation reflects the political system and is not a consequence of citizens’ immutable characteristics. We must supply young people with opportunities. Our second argument is that civic development and civic education will not be improved by more of what we are already doing. There is scant evidence that schools successfully inculcate civic knowledge in students. There is also little evidence of the efficacy of state-mandated community service as a requirement for high school graduation. The third argument is that improving civic development will require new opportunities for youth participation in the community and in the electorate. We propose that civic education be enriched by science-based, community-oriented environmental engagement and by lowering the voting age for municipal elections to 16. Finally, we argue that now is the time to take steps to facilitate civic development. The problems of youth engagement will neither resolve on their own nor be cured by foreseeable changes in social media technologies, federal politics, or generational change.

The step-by-step and structured SYP program manual/book is intended for bilingual Spanish-English speaking licensed graduate mental health professionals who work with immigrant Latina women or Latina women in general across the United States and around the world in direct practice settings and who want to offer psycho-educational groups. Each week, immigrant Latina women meet for two hours in a group format setting.The SYP curriculum is divided into three parts: Part I: Awareness of Self, Part II: Knowledge of Relationships within Culture, and Part III: Impact of Factors on Relationships. The mental health professional (i.e., group facilitator) teaches and facilitates large-group discussion among group members on the following topics: (a) Introductions and Who Am I?; (b) Coping Strategies; (c) Self-Esteem; (d) Influences of Past Trauma; (e) Dating; (f) Cultural Concepts: Machismo, Familism, and Marianismo; (g) Healthy Relationships; (h) Domestic Violence; (i) Factors Influencing Relationships or Sexual Abuse; (j) Talking to Children; and (k) Resources and Graduation. Through group discussion and instruction, in-class drawing and writing self-reflection exercises, and peer support, immigrant Latina women are empowered to examine their identity, self-esteem, and current relationships and to potentially make changes in their lives.

Health economists have been actively investigating the relationships between substance use and educational achievement/labor market performance outcomes. Although researchers agree on the direction and magnitude of the relationships between substance use and some of these outcomes, many questions remain unanswered. For instance, the literature generally indicates that drug use has a negative impact on most academic outcomes. Less evidence exists, however, of a negative impact of alcohol use on education. Although results suggest that drinking is associated with lower grades, and most research shows that drinking negatively impacts the probability of graduating from high school, several studies have been unable to find significant relationships between alcohol consumption and the number of years of schooling completed. Similarly, although most studies find a wage premium for moderate alcohol users, results on the effect of problem drinking or the use of other drugs on the probability of employment are mixed.

In 1838, six-year-old Octave arrived in America with his father Joseph Chanut, who had accepted an offer to teach in one of the three major colleges in antebellum Louisiana. The eldest of three, Octave left the security of his life in Paris, where he lived with his mother, grandmother, and two younger brothers, to move to America with a father he barely knew. A new life, so different and not Parisian at all, began for Joseph and Octave. Joseph home-schooled his son, and his French-speaking colleagues supplied a teaching curriculum according to their expertise, usually communicating in their mother tongue. They not only taught the youngster to read and write, but also to tell the truth and observe the general rules of etiquette. In September 1846, Octave entered the Coudert Lyceum in New York for an education different than what he had received from his father and other professors in Louisiana. After graduating in August 1848 with a degree similar to a high school diploma, Octave selected the Hudson River Railroad as his path into the future.

Born in Lincolnton, North Carolina, in 1837, Stephen Dodson Ramseur rose meteorically through the military ranks. Graduating from West Point in 1860, he joined the Confederate army as a captain, and, by the time of his death near the end of the war at the Battle of Cedar Creek, had attained the rank of major general in the Army of Northern Virginia. Ramseur excelled in every assignment and was involved as a senior officer in many of the war's most important conflicts east of the Appalachians. His letters—over 180 of which are collected and transcribed here—provide his incisive observations on these military events, and, at the same time, offer a rare insight into the personal opinions of a high-ranking Civil War officer. Correspondence by Civil War figures is often strictly professional. The book “Black Professors: women, scholars and intellectuals” was a dream cherished about twenty years ago, when we realized that a whole generation of black intellectuals, professors and researchers were graduating at the most important public and private universities of Brazil. The doctors from this generation were inserted in colleges at the 1980’s, when they have graduated, but it was only in the second half of the 1990’s, and specially with the emergence of the 21st century, that many obtained their academic degrees, particularly in the state of São Paulo. This book approaches the trajectory of three black women professors that contributed to the formation of this generation, as they have supervised students, delivered lectures and produced relevant studies on social reality. The professors Josildeth Gomes Consorte, Petronilha Beatriz Gonçalves e Silva e Eunice Aparecida de Jesus Prudente are black women that made possible and carry on the process of formation of generations. They have personal and institutional history that overcome the limits of their own departments, faculties and universities. The work they have conduced and continue to carry out are fundamental for the social changes assisted in Brazil nowadays. In this study, several aspects of Saxion spin-offs have been analysed, the numbers, workplaces, location, migration, gender issues, different economic sectors and survival rates. The main question underlying all these analyses was what the impact of Saxion as university of applied sciences is on the regional economy of the two regions in which it is located. From the literature, the concept of an entrepreneurial ecosystem, as explanatory factor for the observations that in certain regions more graduates or staff members start their own business and that such an ecosystem helps small fledgling businesses to survive and grow is an interesting concept. Unfortunately, the theoretical foundations are still not fully crystallized, therefore measuring the actual influence of such entrepreneurial ecosystems is still a difficult exercise. In this study, Saxion spin-offs from two regions, Twente and the Cleantech Region, have been analysed, and several differences in terms of number of spin-offs, employment, migration patterns and survival rates have been identified. Since the spin-offs are from the same university of applied sciences, with the same policy regarding support of entrepreneurship and both regions are located outside of the economic core regions of the country, it appears as if the strength of the regional context, the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem and the business opportunities it provides is a factor in explaining why there are more spin-offs in Twente (even when controlling for the larger size of the Saxion campus in this region). If one assumes that the strength of the entrepreneurial ecosystem is stronger in Twente (among others because of existing business networks, the availability of a world class research university, the University of Twente and a business support organization like Novel-T), it would explain why spin-offs located in this region on average offer more workplaces, and have a higher survival rate than in the Cleantech Region. Gender differences related to entrepreneurship are present in Saxion spin-offs, female graduates and staff members are much less likely to start a spin-off company than their male counterparts. When females do start, their spin-offs are on average much smaller in terms of workplaces offered. Their businesses have on average an equal survival rate than those started by a male entrepreneur. Findings from the literature on the subject and the numbers found in this study suggest that there is a need for specific programs in Saxion targeting females, to at least think about starting their own business. Also, specific mentoring programs for spin-offs with female entrepreneurs may help to let these businesses grow and increase their regional economic impact. Saxion spin-offs can be found in many different sectors, something understandable given the broad spectrum of study programs in Saxion. Even though most spin-offs remain micro sized businesses, certain economic sectors seem to offer better scalable business models, especially in sectors such as industry, information and communication technology businesses and business support services. The number as well as employment in the more innovative and internationally competitive topsectors is much higher in the region Twente than in the Cleantech Region, possibly another consequence of the – apparently – stronger regional entrepreneurial ecosystem in Twente. An often-stated argument for regional economic development is that investing in spin-off companies will help to create workplaces in the region, since companies are not very likely to move. In this study, the data on migration of spin-offs have been compared with the migration of graduates, based on the HBO-monitor survey. It is not possible to one-on-one compare the two datasets, as the migration of spin-offs is calculated for the first five years of their existence and the HBO-monitor is held around one and a half year after graduation.
