Considering recent global temperature increase and observed climate change, efforts have been made towards energy efficiency and reduction of green-house gas emission. A foil system is proposed in this study and retrofitted to an existing catamaran to reduce the energy use and to improve the vessel’s seakeeping characteristics. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the application of the foil system on the seakeeping performance of the vessel. CFD simulations based on a panel method were carried out to obtain the seakeeping characteristics of the catamaran with and without foil system. Simulation results show that the foil system reduced the vessel motions in a seaway: the heave-, pitch- and roll significant amplitudes were reduced 4.41, 9.97 and 3.30 percent, respectively, due to the application of the foil system. In addition, the vertical accelerations at the fore perpendicular (FP) and at deck were reduced 3.66 and 9.70 percent, respectively. A check against the NORDFORSK criteria for fast small crafts shows that the vessel can operate safely up to sea state 2.

Exploitation of a vulnerability that compromised the source code of the Solar Winds’ Orion system, a software that is used widely by different government and industry actors in the world for the administration and monitoring of networks; brought to the fore a type of stealth attack that has been gaining momentum: supply chain attacks. The main problem in the violation of the software supply chain is that, from 85% to 97% of the code currently used in the software development industry comes from the reuse of open source code frameworks, repositories of third-party software and APIs, creating potential vulnerabilities in the development cycle of a software product. This research analyzes the SolarWinds case study from an exploratory review of academic literature, government information, but also from the articles and reports that are published by different cybersecurity consulting firms and software providers. Then, a set of good practices is proposed such as: Zero trust, Multi-Factor authentication mechanisms (MFA), strategies such as SBOM and the recommendations of the CISA guide to defend against this type of attack. Finally, the research discusses about how to improve response times and prevention against this type of attacks, also future research related to the subject is suggested, such as the application of Machine Learning and Blockchain technologies. Additionally for risk reduction, in addition to the management and articulation of IT teams that participate in all the actors that are part of the software life cycle under a DevSecOps approach.

The control of multiple manipulators handling a common object entails the solution of an underdetermined system of linear equations which represents the system’s dynamics. In order to choose an optimal solution to this problem, various approaches have been proposed: minimum internal force and minimum power, among others. The present work investigates an approach for minimizing the power losses in these systems. It is shown that the power imparted to the manipulator/payload system cannot be optimized once the system’s motion is prescribed. However, assuming certain loss characteristics for the dc servomotors commonly used on robotic manipulators, it is shown that the minimization of power losses can be cast as a linear-quadratic optimization problem. Local and global performance indices are introduced to allow comparison of the minimum power loss and the minimum internal force approaches. An example of two Puma 560 robots handling a common payload is shown to demonstrate the proposed technique.

The article examines the trends in international relations that have emerged in recent years, including during the pandemic. According to the author, a clear international space structure in the vein of Immanuel Wallerstein’s world-system, with equally clear rules of the game in such space is associated with the presence of an enforcer. The enforcer here is a country or group of countries that impose certain forms of communication on the international space, making the behavior of agents of the international political space predictable. Such a position for the enforcer, among other things, makes it possible to obtain benefi ts (material and status ones) that exceed its costs. This situation was not least determined by the relative homogeneity of the international space actors (States). However, in reality, as shown in the article, there are many more variants of polities in the world, which, under certain conditions, were convenient to imitate state political institutions. The conditions change is leading to actualization of such polities. The actualization of diversity results in a sharp escalation of the enforcer’s costs, a drop in their eff ectiveness and the attractiveness of the enforcer’s position itself. The leader bears more and more signifi cant costs ceases to perform its functions. Here, in place of the institutional system set by the enforcer, comes a diff erent way of organizing international relations – interpersonal trust, which arises and is strengthened by personal communication. Until recently, such “decisionmakers’ clubs” were not as bright as the enforcer, but they connected the global world. However, the pandemic also disrupts this type of communication or rather complicates it. As a result, the hierarchy of problems changes. The problems of domestic politics and the international problems that aff ect them come to the fore. Global politics is being replaced by “neighborhood” politics. In the age of the world without a global leader and regional players rivalry, tomorrows “weight” of one country depends on how eff ectively it will be able to fi t in the new type of political structure.

This article discusses the overlap between British Indian networks of postal communication and trade, and smuggling of opium within a nineteenth-century inter-Asian context. These circulatory networks received support from the expansion of global shipping lines. The colonial state subsidised opium steamers of private shipping companies and converted them into mail packets, using them to transport illicit opium to parts of Southeast and East Asia. Domestically, inland postal routes came to be appropriated by local traders, cultivators and itinerants to smuggle excess opium, growing outside the purview of the colonial state, to various ports in western India, thereby cutting into the profits and prestige of the colonial state. Simultaneously, official complicity in opium smuggling also came to the fore, evident in the case of post offices situated in the eastern parts of the subcontinent, highlighting the inherent weaknesses within the colonial system of administration.

When a vehicle goes on the straight road with a bank angle, a steering pull makes the driver exert a constant steering torque to the steering wheel, which causes an annoying steering feel to the driver. This paper proposes a steering pull model and sensitivity analysis on the steering pull. In order to develop the steering pull model, pulling forces on the tires, such as plysteer and conicity forces, lateral force due to slip angle, lifting forces due to cast and kingpin, and camber force are modeled. A steering system is also modeled because the generated pulling forces are attenuated as it is transmitted through the steering system. Each component of the steering system, such as lower body linkages, rack and pinion gear, universal joint, and steering column with electric power steering (EPS) system is modeled, and then they are integrated into a complete steering system. Finally, the steering pull model is developed by integrating the pulling force model with the steering system model. For verification, the steering pull of a vehicle is estimated based on the model, and the results are compared with the experimental results. For the verification experiments, a steering pull measurement system using a global positioning system (GPS) and its accessories are used. The result comparison showed that the developed steering pull model provides very accurate estimation results. Based on the steering pull model, the sensitivity of steering pull factors, such as caster angle, kingpin angle, camber angle, rack friction force, and anti-rattle spring (ARS) stiffness is analyzed.

In the view of the snowballing development of digitalization processes and post-industrial society, the service sector is the main element of sustainable economic development, where human capital plays a key role. In the study, the authors noted that the individual and his needs came to the fore. So, it`s started to play a more significant role in the methodology of evaluation of national brand indices. However, during a deeper analysis, the question arises whether such techniques consider all aspects of the socio-economic life of the individual or focus on some of its elements. The research on this issue became particularly acute during the global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, when most of the socially active population was forced to work distance and spent more time at home and when their lives depended heavily on the effectiveness of national health systems. This study tried to determine the correlations between the efficacy of national healthcare systems and indicators used in the national brand indices. The methodology of this study involved classical scientific research methods such as systems analysis, scientific abstraction, synthesis, and statistical analysis. Besides, VOSviewer software has been used to analyze a significant number of scientific publications, which include keywords like healthcare and the national brand. The data for bibliometric analysis were retrieved from the Scopus scientometric database. This bibliographic analysis presents the findings on the research directions in the analyzed scientific literature scope. The obtained results allowed us to determine the chronology and geography of publications. The systematization of theoretical results of research issues of assessing the impact of the national health care system on the international image perception of the country showed that this issue is almost undiscovered in domestic and international scientific studies. At the same time, this problem is increasingly important in the practical sphere. To confirm this hypothesis, the authors provide a practical case on the example of the analysis of the methodology of evaluation of national brands based on the Anholt Ipsos Nation Brands Index (NBI) and Best Countries (by US News & World Report). They were analyzed through the prism of assessing the national healthcare system by the Global Health Security Index.

Abstract Scholars in ecocriticism have frequently argued that the environmental crisis calls for an overhaul of the realist novel, which is inadequate at conveying the global scale and ramifications of climate change and related anthropogenic disruptions to the Earth system. In this article, I explore how a centerpiece of nineteenth-century realist fiction, the omniscient narrator, may be reimagined to speak to the imaginative challenges of climate change. As the future becomes fragmented in a multiplicity of alternative scenarios (ranging from local disasters to societal collapse), personal and collective anxieties come to the fore. In my case study, Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel Leave the World Behind, the narrator’s apparent omniscience stages the uncertainties of our climate future through an ironic device: knowledge of the catastrophe experienced by the characters is displayed but also withheld from the reader, leading to an ambivalent, and largely unreadable, narratorial stance. Omniscience is thus used to undermine the possibility of affirming human mastery and control over the unsettling events that are playing out in the storyworld. In this way, Leave the World Behind demonstrates the realist novel’s ability to open itself up to the weird realities of the climate crisis.1

Economic development, environmental protection and land resources are important components in sustainable cities. According to the environmental Kuznets curve, developing countries are prone to environmental pollution problems while developing their economies. At the same time, as urbanization progresses, the problem of inadequate land resources and land use efficiency in China is coming to the fore. Although China is a developing country, it began to actively implement environmental protection measures years ago in an effort to transform itself into an innovative country. Therefore, as an economic and policy pioneer region, can eastern China benefit from all three aspects of land–economy–environment at the same time? Or will the increase in land economic efficiency (Land_EcoE) and the improvement of environmental pollution occur simultaneously? With the characteristics of land use efficiency and other concepts, this study combines economic factors and land factors to establish a Land_EcoE evaluation system. On the basis of mapping the spatio-temporal evolution of carbon emissions and Land_EcoE, and discussing the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics and correlation between them initially and visually by means of geographic data visualization, this study uses the data of 84 prefecture-level cities and municipalities directly under the central government in eastern China from 2011 to 2017 to test the research hypotheses from a quantitative perspective. Specifically, this study analyzes the correlation between Land_EcoE and environmental pollution by constructing a panel regression model. The conclusions show that, in general, the increase in Land_EcoE in eastern China is associated with the increase in carbon emissions. For a group of prefecture-level cities with the most developed economies in eastern China, the increase in Land_EcoE is correlated with the decrease in carbon emissions. Based on this research, this study proposes a series of policy implications on how to promote simultaneous economic–land–environmental benefits.

In the present paper, the cyclic behavior of beam-to-column joints made up of Hybrid Steel Trussed Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) connected to Reinforced Concrete (RC) piers is investigated. HSTCBs are a typology of composite beam generally constituted by a steel truss with end zone added rebars embedded within a block of concrete cast in place. HSTCBs represent a structural solution for light industrialization in the civil constructions; the main advantages in their use are the higher construction speed with the minimum site labor, the possibility of covering wide spans with low depths and a final economical convenience. For these reasons, they are also increasingly adopted within seismic framed structures. In the present study, the examined joints are representative of framed RC structures subjected to seismic actions and designed according to the current Italian standard code. Cyclic tests are performed and interpreted by means of analytical and numerical models with the aim of verifying the strength capacity and ductility of the system, focusing on both the global behavior and the force transmission between steel truss and concrete in the joint region.

AbstractIn the discourse about the development of farmed animal production (terrestrial livestock production and aquaculture) in the tropics, two important food system outcomes emerge: (1) to supply animal-sourced food (ASF) at a level that suffices healthy future diets, including for poor people, and (2) to contribute to climate change mitigation and minimize pollution with nitrogen and phosphorus. Livestock production and aquaculture contribute to food security directly by increasing producers’ food diversity and availability, but also that of urban consumers, and indirectly through income generation and increased farm resilience. Recently, circularity has come to the fore as an integrated approach to food system development. Circularity has four cornerstones: (1) food crops have highest priority (which implies no food-feed competition), (2) avoid losses, (3) recycle waste and (4) use animals to unlock biomass that humans cannot eat. In this review, the role of farmed animals in circular food systems in the tropics is presented in four case studies and the impacts of circularity on food security and environmental impact mitigation are discussed. The cases are ruminants in grazing systems in West Africa and in Colombia, fish in pond aquaculture in general, and land-limited dairy production in Indonesia. Additionally, options for novel protein sources for use in livestock and fish feeding are presented. It is concluded that farmed animals are important in circular food systems because of their use of land unsuited for crop production, their upgrading of crop residues, and their supply of manure to crop production. Nevertheless, the increasing demand for ASF puts pressure on important characteristics of circularity, such as minimizing food-feed competition, maximization of use of waste streams in feed, and the value of manure for fertilization. Hence, in line with conclusions for Western countries, maximum circularity and sustainability of food systems can only be achieved by optimizing the population size of animals. Thus, a sustainable contribution of ASF production to global food security is complex and in not only a technical matter or outcome of an economic process balancing supply and demand. It requires governance for which public, private, and social actors need to partner.

The Qilian orogenic belt in the northern Tibetan plateau connects the Altaids to the north with the Tethyan orogenic system to the south and occupies a key tectonic position in the evolution and assembly of Asia. The belt contains a wide range of subduction–accretion-related petrotectonic units. The Early–Middle Devonian Laojunshan conglomerate, deposited unconformably upon Cambrian–Silurian strata along the northern margin of the North Qilian terrane, contains a record of the late Paleozoic tectonism of the Qilian orogen. Its provenance and tectonic setting are critical in understanding not only the tectonic evolution of Tibetan plateau, but Paleozoic global reconstructions as well. The composition of clastic conglomerates and heavy mineral assemblages of sandstones suggests that coeval mafic, felsic, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks were the main sources. The geochemistry of volcanic clasts and paleocurrent and paleogeographic data suggest derivation from subduction–accretion complexes in the North Qilian terrane. The geochemistry of siltstones and mudstones indicates that the Laojunshan conglomerate was derived from an arc and accumulated in an active continental margin. Geochemical data of granitoid clasts suggest that they were derived from Ordovician–Silurian subduction-related magmatic rocks. Mafic and ultramafic clasts, chromite, and magnetite decrease upwards in the stratigraphy whereas metamorphic, sedimentary and granitoid clasts, and garnet increase. These data imply that mafic rocks were the predominant source during initial deposition. Regional studies suggest that the North China plate subducted southwards and produced subduction-related arc magmatism along the southern margin of the North Qilian terrane during the Early–Middle Devonian. Therefore, we interpret the Laojunshan conglomerate as a fore-arc basin fill.

The problem of the global behavior of the system with 3/2 degrees of freedom is considered in this paper. The results of the theoretical investigation of the case when the systems approach a nonlinear Hamiltonian system are presented. Using, for example, the Duffing-van der Pol equation, computer analysis gives good agreement with theory when the external force has moderate amplitude values (“miracle of a small parameter”). The bifurcations of the invariant torus and resonances are analyzed as a function of the system parameters.

In this paper, we study the global solvability and unsolvability of a nonlinear diffusion system with nonlinear boundary conditions in the case of slow diffusion. The conditions for the global existence of the solution in time and the unsolvability of the solution of the diffusion problem in a homogeneous medium are found on the basis of comparison principle and self-similar analysis. We obtain the critical exponent of the Fujita type and the critical global existence exponent, which plays an important role in the study of the qualitative properties of nonlinear models of reaction-diffusion, heat transfer, filtration and other physical, chemical, biological processes. In the global solvability case the principal terms of the asymptotic of solutions are obtained. It is well known that iterative methods require the presence of a suitable initial approximation, resulting in a rapid convergence to the exact solution and preserving qualitative properties of nonlinear processes under study, it is a major challenge for the numerical solution of nonlinear problems. This difficulty, depending on the value of the numerical parameters of the equation is overcome by a successful choice of initial approximations, which are mainly in the calculations suggested taking asymptotic formula. В данной работе изучается глобальная разрешимость и неразрешимость одной нелинейной системы диффузии c нелинейными граничными условиями в случае медленной диффузии. Найдены условия глобального существования решения по времени и неразрешимости решения нелинейной задачи диффузии в однородной среде на основе автомодельного анализа и метода сравнения решений. Получены критическая экспонента типа Фуджита, и критическая экспонента глобального существования решения по времени, играющих важную роль при исследованиях качественных свойств нелинейных моделей реакции – диффузии, теплопроводности, фильтрации и других физических, химических, биологических процессов. В случае глобальной разрешимости получен главный член асимптотики автомодельных решений. Известно, что итерационные методы требуют наличия подходящего начального приближения, приводящее быстрой сходимости к точному решению и сохраняющие качественные свойства изучаемых нелинейных процессов, это является основной трудностью для численного решения нелинейных задач. Эта трудность в зависимости от значения числовых параметров нелинейной системы диффузии с нелинейными граничными условиями преодолевается путем удачного выбора начальных приближений, в качестве которых при вычислениях предложено брать полученные асимптотические формулы.

Abstract In the post-2008 global financial crisis era, the global financial governance system has experienced dramatic changes and a comparatively new network system comes into the fore. Meanwhile, China’s extraordinary performance during the crisis by virtue of its unique political and economic systems urged the elevation of its role in the new system. Against this backdrop, three words are appropriate to describe the new system and China’s role in it in the post-crisis era-centripetalism (rather than centrifugalism), elevation (rather than domination) and disparity (rather than coherence). Centripetalism means that patched global financial governance network system has more force to coordinate states and related international organizations. Elevation refers to a relatively more important role of China in the new system, but, by no means, a dominant (or hegemonic) role. China is an indispensable participant rather than a leading power in global financial governance. Disparity indicates the differed strategies of China in various global financial governance institutions or toward different events.

Having drawn attention to the existing banking regulation issues, the Global Financial Crisis also raised awareness of the importance of depositors' confidence for the stability of the financial system, and brought the role and significance of the deposit guarantee schemes to the fore. Case (A) Birlasoft, a Global IT major, had been facing massive challenges in monitoring its sales force spread over 20 global locations. Owing to the strong client base spread all over the world and the massive sales force, the organization needed to focus on a more efficient sales tracking system. Ravi Kathuria, Senior Vice president — Global Marketing & Alliances of Birlasoft was keen to align the organization’s dispersed sales force through Sales Force Automation (SFA) system. In this context, SFA was expected to provide transparency and clear visibility of the sales pipeline. There was also an expectation that SFA would help in improving efficiency of global sales force in terms of reporting and customer analysis. At first, the organization decided to implement a home grown sales force automation system, which turned out be a failure, owing to both internal and external factors. This led Kathuria to explore other options which could meet their system requirements and could be implemented in shorter time frames with minimum budget. They evaluated multiple options and are debating on which system to opt for. This case examines the various software delivery methods in the decision on new software procurement. Several software and vendor parameters and the analytical structure and process for evaluating software vendors are included for consideration. This case underlines an innovation which has introduced a complete paradigm shift in information application acquisition, that is, instead of buying software as a product, organizations are increasingly procuring it as a service. Case (B) Following from Case A, the team in Birlasoft appraised multiple options and the majority of the team members were inclined towards SaaS-based SFA. This case discusses various processes and parameters considered by Birlasoft while deciding on a new software vendor.

The 6th Conference of Wine Tourism, organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO, 20222), dealt with very important questions regarding the future of wine tourism. It is obvious that the rapidly growing and increasingly complex social-economic-political and natural environmental challenges create a chaotic (non-sustainable) world in which the answers are possible through broad cooperation and radical innovations. This is the case with tourism, including wine tourism, because they are especially sensitively affected by these changes. (UNWTO, 20221) All of this goes far beyond the boundaries of the sector but, at the same time, creates broad opportunities for the active participation of all members in the value chain of wine tourism. Innovation in services, marketing, and partnerships creates broad opportunities for all value chain members, including travelers, companies, authorities, and locals, at a critical moment when active participation and conscious thinking can increase the value of wine tourism destinations and their environment. Failure to do so can significantly weaken the competitiveness of a given region. The work aimed at this may be the key to the future development of wine tourism and the survival of those interested who have lived from it until now. The last two years have brought significant changes in wine tourism and transformed travel logistics, wine experience planning, and consumer behavior. In addition, a number of challenges that had already appeared came to the fore - from digitalization to sustainability and network cooperation. Sustainability increasingly determines the services offered by wineries and vineyards and travellers' attitudes and purchasing decisions. Meanwhile, digitization and e-commerce have become vital tools in the hands of producers, distributors, and wine tourism businesses, as well as destinations. Necessary innovations in experiences, marketing, and partnerships create broad engagement opportunities for all value chain members. We are focusing on looking for answers to the following research questions, especially taking into account the Hungarian specialities: - On a global level, how important is it to consider sustainability in the wine tourism services of wineries, and to what extent is this differentiated depending on local conditions? - Globally and per country, what aspects do wineries consider in relation to the imple­mentation of sustainable wine tourism? - How do the various sustainability aspects appear as a complex system in decisions about sustainable wine tourism services? Based on the analysis of international experiences and surveys, we try to provide local answers for Hungarian wineries to these questions.

A nonautonomous system, i.e. a system driven by an external force, is usually considered as being phase synchronized with this force. In such a case, the dynamical behavior is conveniently studied in an extended phase space which is the product of the phase space ℝm of the undriven system by an extra dimension associated with the external force. The analysis is then performed by taking advantage of the known period of the external force to define a Poincaré section relying on a stroboscopic sampling. Nevertheless, it may so happen that the phase synchronization does not occur. It is then more convenient to consider the nonautonomous system as an autonomous system incorporating the subsystem generating the driving force. In the case of a sinusoidal driving force, the phase space is ℝm+2 instead of the usual extended phase space ℝm × S1. It is also demonstrated that a global model may then be obtained by using m + 2 dynamical variables with two variables associated with the driving force. The obtained model characterizes an autonomous system in contrast with a classical input/output model obtained when the driving force is considered as an input.

Dynamic analysis and numerical simulation of a protein-ligand chain structure connected to a moving atomic force microscope (AFM) has been conducted. The elements of the chain are free to extend and rotate relative to each other in a two-dimensional plane. Sinusoidal base excitation of the cantilevered beam of the AFM is considered in some detail. Reduced order (dynamic) models are constructed using global modes for both linear and nonlinear dynamic systems with and without the “nearest neighbor assumption.” The agreement between the original and reduced order models (ROM) is very good even when only one global mode is included in the ROM for either the linear case or for the nonlinear case, provided the excitation frequency is lower than the fundamental natural frequency of the linear system. For higher excitation frequencies, more global modes are required. The computational advantage of the reduced order model is clear from the results presented.

Global food insecurity levels remain stubbornly high. One of the surest ways to grasp the scale and consequence of global inequality is through a food systems lens. In a predominantly urban world, urban food systems present a useful lens to engage a wide variety of urban (and global) challenges—so called ‘wicked problems.’ This paper describes a collaborative research project between four urban food system research units, two European and two African. The project purpose was to seek out solutions to what lay between, across and within the different approaches applied in the understanding of each city’s food system challenges. Contextual differences and immediate (perceived) needs resulted in very different views on the nature of the challenge and the solutions required. Value positions of individuals and their disciplinary “enclaves” presented further boundaries. The paper argues that finding consensus provides false solutions. Rather the identification of novel approaches to such wicked problems is contingent of these differences being brought to the fore, being part of the conversation, as devices through which common positions can be discovered, where spaces are created for the realisation of new perspectives, but also, where difference is celebrated as opposed to censored.

Based on the global existence theory of the Vlasov–Poisson–Boltzmann system around vacuum in the N-dimensional phase space, in this paper, we prove the uniform L1stability of classical solutions for small initial data when N ≥ 4. In particular, we show that the stability can be established directly for the soft potentials, while for the hard potentials and hard sphere model it is obtained through the construction of some nonlinear functionals. These functionals thus generalize those constructed by Ha for the case without force to capture the effect of the force term on the time evolution of solutions. In addition, the local-in-time L1stability is also obtained for the case of N = 3.

Models with a vanishing anisotropic viscosity in the vertical direction are of relevance for the study of turbulent flows in geophysics. This motivates us to study the two-dimensional Boussinesq system with horizontal viscosity in only one equation. In this paper, we focus on the global existence issue for possibly large initial data. We first examine the case where the Navier–Stokes equation with no vertical viscosity is coupled with a transport equation. Second, we consider a coupling between the classical two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation and a transport–diffusion equation with diffusion in the horizontal direction only. For both systems, we construct global weak solutions à la Leray and strong unique solutions for more regular data. Our results rest on the fact that the diffusion acts perpendicularly to the buoyancy force.

The purpose of this article is the study of large companies' investment activities on the example of agricultural holdings in Ukraine. The belonging of the studied ob-jects to the complex dissipative economic systems with the emerging chaotic be-haviour is proved. The conditions and measures of ensuring the balance of the company's investment portfolio are studied. The involvement of chaos theory is proposed as a mathematical basis of the studies. The proposed model of agro-holding investment activity dynamics is presented by the system of differential equations and realized using the MatLab software platform. Numerical modelling of the investment processes dynamics in accordance with different values of management parameters is carried out. Transition scenarios of the system to a chaotic motion mode with the emergence of a strange Lorentz attractor are fore-cast. Scenarios of experiments on the model in order to ensure sustainable propor-tional development of production and logistics subsystems of the agricultural hold-ing and the formation of its investment portfolio are proposed. The behaviour di-agnostics system model on the basis of evolutionary equations is aimed at increas-ing the efficiency of making corrective investment decisions for the sustainable development of the agricultural holding.

The relation between the local and global values of the fracture initiation toughness is investigated for a cast Al6061-based metal matrix composite with 10% of Al2O3 particles after different heat treatments. The global values of the fracture initiation toughness are determined by conventional fracture mechanics tests. The local values of the fracture initiation toughness are found by measuring the critical crack tip opening displacement (CODi) at different locations along the crack front. To do this, an automatic fracture surface analysis system is applied. Despite of the large scatter of the individual CODi-values, a good correlation to the global fracture initiation toughness values is found.

The article describes the factors of professional stress in aviation, determined by advances in aviation construction against the background of planetary global economic, political and environmental changes. The development of technology in the aviation industry by the 1980s reached a level that minimized both the impact of aggressive environmental factors and the physical activity of those employed in aviation. Currently, the problems of companies' relations with personnel, caused by frequent downfalls of aircraft on the one hand and the growth of aviation traffic, the level of optimization of organizational structures on the other, come to the fore in this area. As a result, staff are forced to share jobs, receive training in time, be at risk of losing their jobs, or work to the limit. Vertical relations, in turn, affect the socio-psychological climate in the teams and the nature of the relationship of aviation specialists. Also of particular urgency is the problem of professional burnout of aviation specialists, exacerbating in the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The need for integrated optical interconnects in electronic systems is derivedfrom the cost and performance of electronic systems. If we examine the cost of all interconnects, it becomes apparent that there is an exponential growth in cost per interconnect with the length of the interconnect. A remarkable feature of interconnect cost is that the exponential relation holds over all length scales—from the shortest interconnects on a chip to the longest interconnects in global telecommunications networks. Longer interconnects are drastically more expensive, and these costs are ultimately related to the labor cost associated with each interconnect. Given this economic pressure, it is not surprising that there is a driving force to condense more functions locally on the same chip, board, or system. In condensing these functions, the number of long interconnects are decreased and the overall cost of the electronic system decreases dramatically. A specific glaring example of this driving force is Si complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, especially the case of microprocessors. In the Si microprocessor case, the flood gates to interconnect condensation were opened and the miraculous trend of lower cost for exponentially increasing performance was revealed.

Owing to the growing threats of pandemics like the Corona Virus (COVID-19) among other emerging infectious diseases, terrorism, genocide, human trafficking, and the proliferation of small arms and light weapons among others, the study assessed the United Nations (UN) on the collective agreement in maintaining global peace and stability. In achieving these, the study adopted the descriptive research design and derived relevant data through the use of semi-structured interviews with respondents randomly chosen from the five permanent member states of the UN Security Council (UNSC). The system theory was employed to provide a clear understanding of the subject matter and the need for institution and collectiveness in the management and sustainability of world peace. However, findings revealed that a restructured UNSC is necessary to give room for a more responsive and all-inclusive organization. This brings to the fore the importance of collective agreements in a multilateral world to collectively and efficiently tackle the contemporary threats to world peace and stability.

ABSTRACT The construction industry is one of the three largest carbon emitting industries in the world, accounting for up to thirty percent of global greenhouse gas emissions each year. Since traditional cast-in-situ building operations significantly contribute to these emissions and cannot therefore meet green building requirements, prefabricated buildings have come in to their own as a construction method that effectively reduces carbon emissions. Although studies have been conducted in to reducing carbon emissions by using prefabricated techniques at the building construction stage, none have focused on the reduction of carbon emissions by using prefabricated instead of cast-in-situ decoration systems. This study therefore used a case study in China to evaluate the carbon reduction potential of prefabricated decoration floor systems compared with traditional cast-in-situ decoration floor systems, and to also consider the carbon reduction pathways of four different types of prefabricated floor system from the perspectives of work methods and materials. Since the case study results showed that the carbon emissions reduction of the prefabricated floor system was 69.7%, or 101.5 kg CO2e per cubic meter, it can be concluded that there is a significant carbon reduction potential for using a prefabricated decoration floor system compared with a traditional cast-in-situ decoration floor system. The key contribution of the study is that it provides valuable references for interior decoration practitioners and decision makers when considering ways to reduce carbon emissions through prefabricated decoration floor systems.

The emphasis is on the cultural and historical nature of the emergence and development of the institution of education. The specifics of its current state consists in the transition from the state of "universal education" characteristic of the modern time to the localization of education in specialized groups and communities as a characteristic trend of global reality (the phenomenon of "educational archipelago"). In these conditions, school education receives a special purpose. It becomes a prerequisite for an individual’s ability to self-determination in a changing world devoid of objective unity. Accordingly, giftedness as a potential for personality development comes to the fore. The shortcomings of the common understanding of giftedness are analyzed, its relationship with the essence of man is shown. The meaning of giftedness as a negative and positive educational task is revealed. The most important result of the development of giftedness in the school is the discovery by the student of his vocation. In the form of a vocation, a person opens the semantic perspective of his life and determines the scenario of life in an adult state.

This study aims to investigate the structural behavior and load-carrying capacity of prefabricated shoring systems. The structural behavior and performance of shoring systems are influenced by the buckling of vertical members, where the compressive force acts as the main load. The buckling strength of a vertical member is sensitive to not only the material and geometrical properties of members but also the connection details between members, presence or absence of braces, and stiffness ratio between members. Therefore, in this study, the structural behavioral characteristics of the individual post member and the entire system are investigated by considering the structural details through eigenvalue and nonlinear finite element analyses. On the basis of the analytical studies, it was confirmed that the boundary condition of the vertical member, rotational and horizontal stiffnesses, and eccentricity condition of the end, which are directly affected by the compressive force acting on the prefabricated shoring system, have a direct effect on the elastic buckling strength. In addition, it was determined that factors such as whether the braces were installed, rotational stiffness of the vertical–horizontal member connection, and the number of installation stages affected the overall strength of the structure. According to the structural analysis results, the assembled structure was reduced by 92.9% and 82.2% compared to the elastic buckling strength of a single member as the height increased to two and three stories. Stabilization at the top vertical position of an inverted pendulum on a cart, while bringing the cart to a desired position, by applying a force to the cart is considered. This is an underactuated mechanical system for which the main nonlinear control scheme, feedback linearization, fails. A single control law producing the force on the cart using cart velocity, and position and velocity of the pendulum is developed and shown, by numerical experiments, to asymptotically stabilize the pendulum at the top position while bringing the cart to its origin, although no attemp is made for a proof of global stability.

Breakwaters have been severely damaged quite often since they are directly exposed to large waves. And damage level of breakwaters has been scaled up because of abnormal global climate changes. In particular, according to the report of caisson breakwater damages in Japan(Takayama, 2002), it was found that damages caused by caisson sliding, account for more than 70% of breakwater failure modes. So, the design criteria for new breakwaters is being intensified to cope with abnormal global climate changes and unusual waves. In the case of a long structure, the wave force is reduced due to the phase difference in oblique waves. Therefore, if a caisson is made as long as possible, the stability of breakwaters could be ensured even if unusual high waves occur. Recently, interlocking caisson systems, which are to form a long caisson by interlocking individual caissons with each other, have been much attention to enhance the structural stability of conventional caisson breakwaters. In the present study, a modular caisson was proposed that can improve structural stability and workability by using the shear-key interlocking system; and the wave force reduction effects of the modular caisson breakwater were evaluated by numerical analysis method.

This paper deals with cell mapping methodology for global analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems. It serves a mixed set of purposes. It is basically a tutorial paper on cell mapping. But, it also reports on certain new developments in cell mapping and includes a summary of recent publications on the topic. Presented in Sec. 1–3 and 5 are the basic concepts and theory of cell mapping. Two types of cell-to-cell mapping are discussed, namely: simple cell mapping and generalized cell mapping. Once a dynamical system has been cast in the form of a cell mapping, one needs to extract the system behavior from the mapping. In Secs. 4 and 6, computation algorithms for simple cell mapping and generalized cell mapping are discussed in detail. Moreover, a workshop-type example is included to guide the reader if he wishes to gain a working knowledge of the methodology. The new developments presented in the paper include an algorithm for processing simple cell mappings and a theory of subdomain-to-subdomain global transient analysis of generalized cell mapping. These are reported in Secs. 4–6. Listed in the last section are publications on cell mapping, including applications in many rather diversified areas of dynamics. Hopefully, the breadth of the examples of application will indicate the potential of the cell mapping method.

We study the dynamics of infinitely many Cucker–Smale (CS) flocking particles under the interplay of random communication and compressible fluids in planar wave case. For the dynamics of an ensemble of flocking particles, we use the kinetic Cucker–Smale–Fokker–Planck (CS–FP) equation with a degenerate diffusion, whereas for the fluid component, we use the compressible Navier–Stokes (NS) equations. These two subsystems are coupled via the drag force. For this coupled model, we present a global existence of classical solutions for arbitrarily large initial data which may contain vacuum.

In the age of knowledge-based economies, open innovation has increasing importance. This study aimed to explore the architectural design approaches that can revitalize innovation activities in the era of knowledge-based economies. This paper investigated global case research campuses, manufacturing systems, and innovation districts where architectural design supports innovation activities. This study developed a research framework of architectural design for innovation and applied it in the selected case studies to generate insights. First, the research campuses selected as case studies included Panopticon, DGIST Education and Research Campuses, and Apple Park. Second, the open innovation of manufacturing system architecture was analyzed through the case studies of the Ford Motor Company, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Third, this paper studied the clustered open innovation architectures of Macquarie Park, One North, and Strijp-S Innovation Districts. The findings revealed how tacit knowledge motivates open innovation through the design of manufacturing systems, research campuses, and innovation districts through real examples and mathematical or concept model building.

As issues of environment and energy draw keen interest around the globe due to such problems as global warming and the energy crisis, LED with high optical efficiency is brought to the fore as the next generation lighting. In addition, as the national income level gets higher and life expectancy is extended, interest in the enhancement of life quality is increasing. Accordingly, the trend of lightings is changing from mere adjustment of light intensity to system lighting in order to enhance the quality of one’s life as well as reduce energy consumption. Thus, this study aims to design LED context lighting system that automatically recognizes the location and acts of a user in residential areas and creates an appropriate lighting environment. The proposed system designed in this study includes three types of processing: first, the creation of a lighting environment index suitable for the user’s surroundings and lighting control scenarios and second, it measures and analyzes the optical characteristics that change depending on the dimming control of lighting and applies them to the index. Lastly, it adopts PIR, piezoelectric, and power sensor to grasp the location and acts of the user and create a lighting environment suitable for the current context.

The Lewke cannon was one of the selected items in the Pilot Project Provenance Research on Objects of the Colonial Era launched in 2019. This cannon has gained attention globally because of its unique and unmatched decorations. While its history of being looted from the palace of Kandy has been recorded by various historians, very little attention has been given to the actual decoration on the cannon. This article shows that the decoration and inscription on the outer surface of the cannon were applied as a gift from the prominent Sri Lankan figure Lewke to King Sri Vijaya Rajasinha of Kandy in 1745-46 and as such represents an internal political moment in the Kandyan kingdom. The research into the cannon brings to the fore the Sri Lankan craftsmanship of this eighteenth-century South Asian region. While ancient Lankan motifs have been applied, the craftsmen were able to emphasize the motifs already present in the bronze cast from the seventeenth-century Netherlands, amongst which Lankan emblems, as well as adapt their motifs to better suit the decoration already present. In all, this contribution shows how an analysis of the decoration and the inscription provides us with new insight into the mid-eighteenth-century Sri Lankan social-political and cultural context, while at the same time revealing a global history of cultural diplomacy.

We investigate the local and global dynamics of two 1-Dimensional (1D) Hamiltonian lattices whose inter-particle forces are derived from nonanalytic potentials. In particular, we study the dynamics of a model governed by a “graphene-type” force law and one inspired by Hollomon’s law describing “work-hardening” effects in certain elastic materials. Our main aim is to show that, although similarities with the analytic case exist, some of the local and global stability properties of nonanalytic potentials are very different than those encountered in systems with polynomial interactions, as in the case of 1D Fermi–Pasta–Ulam–Tsingou (FPUT) lattices. Our approach is to study the motion in the neighborhood of simple periodic orbits representing continuations of normal modes of the corresponding linear system, as the number of particles [Formula: see text] and the total energy [Formula: see text] are increased. We find that the graphene-type model is remarkably stable up to escape energy levels where breakdown is expected, while the Hollomon lattice never breaks, yet is unstable at low energies and only attains stability at energies where the harmonic force becomes dominant. We suggest that, since our results hold for large [Formula: see text], it would be interesting to study analogous phenomena in the continuum limit where 1D lattices become strings.

This paper presents an approximate model which can be used for predictive analysis of industrial tube bundles subjected to cross-flow. A tube bundle in cross-flow is locally approximated, in a global sense, by a single-degree-of-freedom system, called the global system. The critical flow velocity can be predicted by computing the velocity at which the damping ratio of the global system becomes zero. In the stable region, tube response amplitude can be approximated by the amplitude of the global system response. In this approach, the knowledge of four fluid force coefficients is required to solve the problem. They are determined experimentally by dynamic response measurements. The global model so defined is compared with the simplified method usually used for industrial predictive analysis purposes. It is shown that the conventional method can be considered as a particular simplified case of the present model. Practical examples concerning square-in-line tube bundles are given. They show that the first results obtained with the global model are promising.

To carry out a comparative analysis of the EU countries’ national innovation systems (NIS), a feature vector has been compiled, covering three modules, namely, science, education, and innovation. The feature vector is a valid multidimensional data set of sixteen official statistics indices and two sub-indices of the Global Innovation Index. The development of a cognitive model for managing the NIS parameters required a preliminary three-stage empirical study to determine its elements. In the first stage, cluster analysis was performed (the k-means, metric – Euclidean distance algorithm was used). As a result, the EU countries were divided into four clusters (following multidimensional scaling estimates). In the second stage, a classification analysis (using decision trees) was carried out, which allowed determining three parameters that distinguish clusters (or classes) optimally. These parameters are recognized as important ones in terms of positioning the countries in the general ranking; that is, they can be considered as a priority for the NIS development and improving the countries’ positions in international comparisons. In the third stage, based on the authors’ approach, the significance (information content) of each key parameter is estimated. As a result, a cognitive model was compiled, taking into account the parameter significance. The model can be used in managing the NIS parameters, seeking to increase the system performance and improve the international position of a specific country. The model can also be used by partner countries, for example, Ukraine, as it demonstrates the landscape of EU innovative development and outlines the directions for priority development of NIS towards the European progress.

AbstractThis study analyzes QuikSCAT surface wind data over the North Pacific Ocean to document the distribution of captured fetches in extratropical cyclones that produced hurricane force (HF) wind fields from January 2003 through May 2008. A case study is presented to introduce the datasets, which include surface wind analyses from the Global Forecast System (GFS) Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS), and wave hindcasts from the third-generation wave model (WAVEWATCH III; hereafter, WW3), in addition to the QuikSCAT surface wind data. The analysis shows significant interannual variability in the location of the captured fetches as documented by QuikSCAT, including a shift in the distribution of captured fetches associated with ENSO. GDAS surface winds over the ocean are consistently underanalyzed when compared to QuikSCAT surface winds, despite the fact that satellite observations of ocean surface winds are assimilated. When the WW3 hindcasts associated with HF cyclones are compared with buoy observations over the eastern and central North Pacific Ocean, the wave model significantly underestimates the large-swell events.
