Our project focuses on the emotional face evoked EEG signal recognition. Since EEG signals contain enough information to separate different emotional facial expressions. Thus we propose a new approach which is based on global field power on EEG signal classification. In order to perform this result, firstly, we gather a dataset with EEG signals. This is done by measuring EEG signals from people aged 20-30 that are stimulated by emotional facial expressions (Happy, Neutral, Sad). Secondly, the collected EEG signals are preprocessed through using noise reduction method. And then select features by principal component analysis (PCA) to filter out redundant information. Finally, using fisher classifier and a 10-fold cross validation method for training and testing, a good classification rate is achieved when combination local max global field power EEG signals. The rate is 90.49%.

This essay takes modern world-system theory and maps it into a political-economic field of power. This re-modeling of the theory better illustrates the diffuseness and the spatiality of the operations of global forces; thus, helping us have a greater appreciation of the durability and scope of Western economic and political hegemony across the world. Our exposition also tracks the structural transformation undergone by the Global Power-Field (GPF) throughout its history showing the evolving character of its dominance. Moreover, this field paradigm does not restrict its considerations to matters of political economy but also centralizes factors of politics and international relations that play a fundamental a role in driving historical dynamics. The workings of this emerging model are then illustrated by a historical case study from the Middle East: The nineteenth and early twentieth century Ottoman Empire.

This article investigates Russia's relationship with the West in the 1990s and 2000s by analyzing changes in a specific segment of the contemporary global economy—the academic sphere. It traces how the social sciences and the humanities in Russia have evolved from relative insularity and hierarchy during the Soviet era to a more complex web of multiple local institutions, setting their own rules, alongside powerful international agents. Assuming that individual trajectories can make objective spatial structures visible, the article analyzes the biographies of three young Russian scholars, collected in 2004 and 2005 during a research project in the anthropology of science. Patterns of academic migration and intellectual exchange with the West are presented here as providing clues to the spatial structure of the Russian scientific field and its place in the global academic economy. The article concludes with a discussion whether these findings may be generalized to other spheres, and applied not only to Russia but to other post-Soviet states caught in-between the First and the Third Worlds.

In this paper I seek to discuss the methodological challenges of conducting fieldwork amongst one’s own. I explore the fluidity of the outsider/insider identity within the research. I argue that a global “power-geometry” is at play when establishing rapport with a community where fieldwork is conducted. Using the Brazilian Spiritist healing centre established by John of God (João de Deus) as a case study, I show that the field in Brazil is not isolated from global flows. Thus researchers must take into consideration the impact of global flows of ideas and people on the religious community as well as the offshoots of this community overseas. Following Marcus (1998) and Clifford (1997), I suggest that tracking flows is as important as researching a specific site.

The author traces, from today’s perspective, the course and ways of global and regional (European) influences on social development of the two Iberian countries – Spain and Portugal. Both states have been facing numerous domestic and external challenges at the beginning of the third decade of 21st century. Both have been engaged in strenuous efforts to overcome the grave social and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Both are on the threshold of new major transformations. The two Iberian countries are good case studies of the global and regional trends that would shape the trajectory of global development in the foreseeable future.

Respiratory-related evoked potentials (RREPs) were stimulated by brief (200-ms) oral pressure pulses (−10 cmH2O) applied at the onset of inspiration in 12 subjects. Scalp potentials were measured at 30 sites on a rectangular grid that encompassed the right side of the scalp overlying the somatosensory cortex (SSC). Concurrent and significant masseter EMG (mEMG) activity was evoked by the pressure pulse, and we found correlational evidence for contamination of the RREP by the mEMG. The global field power (GFP) was used to provide a robust, reference-independent measure of SSC activation that provided partial insulation from mEMG contamination. The mean GFP from all subjects, reflective of afferent information from respiratory mechanoreceptors, showed a latency to onset of significant afferent SSC activity of ∼25 ms. Scalp GFP activity during control experiments (absence of applied pressure) was significant and may reflect ongoing afferent activity from inspiration.

Spatially continuous networks with heterogeneous connections are ubiquitous in biological systems, in particular neural systems. To understand the mutual effects of locally homogeneous and globally heterogeneous connectivity, we investigate the stability of the rest-state activity of a neural field as a function of its connectivity. The variation of the connectivity is operationalized through manipulation of a heterogeneous two-point connection embedded into the otherwise homogeneous connectivity matrix, as well as by variation of connectivity strength and a finite transmission speed. The latter results in a time delay of communication among individual brain areas. We demonstrate that the local connectivity generates the well-known power-law behaviour of the electroencephalographic power spectrum with an exponent close to −2, whereas the global connections generate a more characteristic line spectrum. These spectral characteristics are routinely observed in large-scale topographies of the human brain.

Summary Total field strength, declination, and dip angle of the Earth's magnetic field, in conjunction with gravity, are used by magnetic-survey tools to determine a wellbore's location. Magnetic field values may be obtained from global models that, depending on the model, have a wide range of spatial resolution at the Earth's surface from large scale (3000 km) to small scale (28 km). The magnetic field varies continuously in both time and space, so no model can fully capture the complexity of all sources; hence, there are uncertainties associated with the values provided. The SPE Wellbore Positioning Technical Section/Industry Steering Committee on Wellbore Surveying Accuracy (ISCWSA) published their original measurement-while-drilling (MWD) error model in 2000. Such models and uncertainties define positional error ellipsoids along the wellbore, which assist the driller in achieving their geological target, in addition to aiding collision avoidance. With the recent update to Revision 5 of the ISCWSA error model, we have reassessed the uncertainties associated with our latest high-resolution global magnetic field model. We describe the derivation of location-specific global and random uncertainties for use with predicted geomagnetic values from high-resolution models within magnetic MWD survey-tool-error models. We propose a sophisticated approach to provide realistic values at different locations around the globe; for example, we determine separate errors for regions where the models have high spatial resolution from aeromagnetic data compared to regions where only satellite data are available. The combined uncertainties are freely available via a web service with which the user can also see how they vary with time. The use of the revised uncertainty values in the MWD-error model, in most cases, reduces the positional error ellipsoids and allows better use of the increased accuracy from recent improvements in geomagnetic modeling. This is demonstrated using the new uncertainty values in the MWD-error model for three standard ISCWSA well profiles. A fourth theoretical well offshore Brazil where the vertical magnetic field is weak shows that with drillstring interference correction relying on the more uncertain magnetic dip, the positional error ellipsoids can increase. This is clearly of concern for attaining geological targets and collision avoidance.

This article introduces Pierre Bourdieu’s notions of field, interest, and symbolic power into the study of global environmental politics, for the purpose of positioning the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) within the international field of climate politics. Revisiting historical accounts of the IPCC’s establishment, the article explores the IPCC’s role in generating international interest in climate change and the field of forces and struggles that has emerged around the organization and its assessment activities as a result. The IPCC continues to hold a central position within the climate field because of its symbolic power to construct the meaning of climate change. This makes the organization, its assessment activities, and the knowledge it produces central objects of struggle within the climate field, and the forces that this contestation produces structure all aspects of the IPCC and its work. The article identifies how developing-country attitudes, climate skepticism, and bandwagoning impact the IPCC’s place in climate politics and its assessments of the climate problem.

The point of this article can be quickly made: it is just that, there is a big difference between the financial power exercised by the United States and that exercised by Japan, and that the difference is partly explained by the role of information in the global financial structure. It also happens that this difference is a rather good illustration of the difference between structural power and relational power. What I am comparing is the structural power to extend or restrict the range of options open to others which has been, and still is, exercised by the United States in the postwar decades, in this case specifically in the field of finance, with the relational power which Japan exercises in the same field of finance by virtue of its position as the world's major creditor country and aid donor.

Abstract The World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) is a long-range network capable of locating lightning strokes in space and time. While able to locate lightning to within a few kilometers and tens of microseconds, the network currently does not measure any characteristics of the strokes themselves. The capabilities of the network are expanded to allow for measurements of the far-field power from the root-mean-square electric field of the detected strokes in the 6–18-kHz band. This is accomplished by calibrating the network from a single well-calibrated station using a bootstrapping method. With this technique the global median stroke power seen by the network is 1.0 × 106 W, with an average uncertainty of 17%. The results are validated through comparison to the return-stroke peak current as measured by the New Zealand Lightning Detection Network and to the previous ground wave power measurements in the literature. The global median stroke power herein is found to be four orders of magnitude lower than that reported earlier for the measurements, including the nearby ground and sky wave. However, it is found that the far-field waveguide mode observations herein are consistent with the previous literature because of differences in observational techniques and the efficiency of coupling into a propagation wave in the Earth–ionosphere waveguide. This study demonstrates that the WWLLN-determined powers can be used to estimate the return-stroke peak currents of individual lightning strokes occurring throughout the globe.

This article draws on the concept of “countervailing powers” to explore some of the contradictory effects of Canadian health care restructuring on nursing. The main focus is on key institutional powers in the nursing field, the major individual and collective strategies nurses have adopted in response to restructuring, and the ways in which the interaction between global and national market forces and the aggregate responses of nurses has created a severe shortage of nurses. The global shortage has led to a global competition for nurses' labor. This, along with government budget surpluses, has increased nurses' bargaining power, forcing governments and hospital managers to reverse nursing spending cuts; to offer more secure professional jobs, as opposed to casual work; to engage in aggressive, bonuses-laden recruitment of nurses, both within Canada and abroad; and, more generally, to rethink some of their restructuring strategies. However, since the bargaining power of nurses is largely market dependent and, as such, highly variable, there does not seem to be much potential for a sustained increase in the institutionalized power of the nursing profession.

Genocide prevention has been a field located in the Global North but preoccupied with the Global South. It is an elite field that is dominated by Western technical experts, many of whom have close ties to Western governments, and that is organized along vertical hierarchies. It works largely with states and militaries, and focuses a majority of its attention on military intervention into ongoing conflict as well as legal accountability after genocide has been committed. These priorities have had a dramatic impact on how genocide is defined and identified, preferencing the mass killing element of the crime and “reducing genocide to law,” as the legal scholar Payam Akhavan aptly put it in his 2012 book of that title. Although grassroots outreach is sometimes advocated, it is usually understood in terms of pressure politics and lobbying at the center of global power rather than as the empowerment of ordinary people worldwide as transformative and preventative agents in and of themselves. This article is both a call for critical self-examination of the field of genocide studies and a surfacing of paths not taken in the practice of genocide prevention.

Abstract Over the past decade, rising authoritarian regimes have begun to challenge the liberal international order. This challenge is particularly pronounced in the field of multilateral development finance, where China and its coalition partners from Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa have created two new multilateral development banks. This article argues that China and its partners have used the New Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to increase their power and to restrict democratic control mechanisms. By comparing formal mechanisms of democratic control in both organizations to the World Bank, this article shows that civil society access, transparency, and accountability are lower at the AIIB and NDB than they are at the World Bank.

In the context of cosmic microwave background polarization studies and the characterization of the Galactic foregrounds, the power spectrum analysis of the thermal dust polarization sky has led to intriguing evidence of an E∕B asymmetry and a positive TE correlation. In this work, we produce synthesized dust polarization maps from a set of global magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of Milky-Way-sized galaxies, and analyze their power spectra at intermediate angular scales (intermediate angular multipoles ℓ∈[60, 140]). We study the role of the initial configuration of the large-scale magnetic field, its strength, and the feedback on the power spectrum characteristics. Using full-galaxy MHD simulations, we were able to estimate the variance induced by the peculiar location of the observer in the galaxy. We find that the polarization power spectra sensitively depend on the observer’s location, impeding a distinction between different simulation setups. In particular, there is a clear statistical difference between the power spectra measured from within the spiral arms and those measured from the inter-arm regions. Also, power spectra from within supernova-driven bubbles share common characteristics, regardless of the underlying model. However, no correlation was found between the statistical properties of the polarization power spectra and the local (with respect to the observer) mean values of physical quantities such as the density and the strength of the magnetic field. Finally, we find some indications that the global strength of the magnetic field may play a role in shaping the power spectrum characteristics; as the global magnetic field strength increases, the E∕B asymmetry and the TE correlation increase, whereas the viewpoint-induced variance decreases. However, we find no direct correlation with the strength of the local magnetic field that permeates the mapped region of the interstellar medium.

China’s political influence is growing in tandem with its economic and military might. The rise of China triggers significant changes in the regional and global order. As China’s material power increases, it poses a serious challenge to the global hegemony of the USA in almost every field. It is unclear whether China's advances in many kinds of power parameters will lead to a change in predominance. Although China has made significant progress in hard power, it has not shown the same success in soft power. This study focuses on the role of China's soft power in the struggle for global hegemony. The study aims to answer the question of how important soft power is in building hegemony. In the research, the effectiveness and limits of China's soft power are analyzed. The study argues that China's achievements in soft power are not enough for it to build a global hegemony. It is concluded that China's shortcomings in soft power are the biggest obstacle to the country's ability to build a regional and global order.

Science studies scholars often study up to high-tech elites who produce and design scientific knowledge and technology. Methodological tension begins when you pair a desire to study down to less economically developed countries, with the desire to study up to high-tech elites within them. This becomes further complicated when the ethnographer and his/her informants share professional interests and credentials. In these situations, the researcher has high status because of geopolitical privilege. However, the researcher is neither a high-tech elite nor a local cultural elite. How might the ethnographer successfully access and navigate field sites imbued with these unseen power differentials? There are currently no visual mapping tools to enhance the process of reflexivity by feminist ethnographers, as they consider their globally embedded multiple, hierarchical, and situated positionality. This reflection methodology piece provides a tool to consider this phenomenon, as it exists across the Global North/South divide of power. Such a tool would be useful to northern ethnographers to better strategize ethics and access while avoiding complicity with structures of inequality and empowering their southern interlocutors.

Photovoltaic systems are designed to feed either to grid or direct consumption. Due to global concerns, significant growth is being observed in Grid connected solar PV Plants. Since the PV module generates DC power, inverter is needed to interface it with grid. The power generated by a solar PV module depends on surrounding such as irradiance and temperature. This paper presents modelling of solar PV arrays connected to grid-connected plant incorporated with irradiance and temperature variation, to design simulator to study and analyse effect on output power of solar PV arrays with irradiance and temperature variation, also to estimate the output power generated by PV arrays. The mathematical model is designed implemented separately on simulator for each PV components connected in PV systems, which are PV cell, Module, sting, array and field of arrays. The results from simulation based on model are verified by the data collected from power plants and experiments done on solar PV cell.

AbstractThis article analyses global civil society advocacy in the field of child labour through the lens of theories on political representation in global governance. The article is sympathetic to newer theories on political representation which, fundamentally, understand representation as a dialectic of performative practices between representatives and their real or imagined constituencies. However, the article argues that the contemporary literature on political representation turns a blind eye on two aspects that are central to understanding this dialectic of representation in the child labour case: first, representation as power and second, the contested nature of citizenship. The article thus proposes an approach to political representation that allows highlighting the power-dimension inherent to the interrelation between formal and performative aspects of representation, that is, between civil society actors’ power to represent and their power over representation. Using such an approach, the article presents empirical insights on CSO representation in global policymaking on child labour – a field in which conflicts over legitimate representation, citizenship, and grassroots participation continue to be exceptionally fierce.

Much of the literature on multistakeholder partnerships that addresses grand challenges has extolled the virtues of such partnerships as a means of reducing uncertainty, acquiring resources, and solving local and global wicked problems. These virtues include opening up “access and agendas to wider participation” (Gray, 1989, p. 120), coordinating across jurisdictional boundaries, mobilizing diverse and heterogeneous actors, and generating novel solutions to address these complex problems. Yet partnerships are not panaceas, and the reasons they fall short of their stated aspirations remain underexplored. We argue that attention to the political landscape, and particularly who has power and who does not, can account for the shortfalls of many partnerships. Theory and practice can improve by considering power dynamics in the institutional field that shapes the context in which partnerships unfold and influences the problems partnerships are designed to affect. We consider four field conditions that differ with respect to the degree of power and alignment of goals among actors in the field. We discuss four trajectories of change originating from each of these field conditions that describe shifts in field-level power or alignment of goals: collaboration, contention, consciousness raising, and compliance. We explore the dynamics associated with each trajectory to show how fields may shift toward or away from conditions conducive to building and sustaining collaborative partnerships around grand challenges.

Currently, the world is moving rapidly toward carbon neutrality, and renewable energy technology is very important in carbon neutrality. Among various renewable energy technologies, wind power is attracting much attention due to its sustainability, resource abundance, and high applicability. This study analyzed wind power patents from 2010 to 2021 to derive current global originality and convergence information. For IP5 countries, the growth stages of technology and the patent convergence networks were inferred by time series analysis and an association rule mining algorithm, respectively. The results showed that, during the analysis period, about 5000 patents were applied on annual average, and it was analyzed that China held the most patents at 48%, followed by the US, Europe, Korea, and Japan. According to the technology convergence network of patent codes from all the IP5 countries, patents related to ‘wind turbines with rotation axes in the wind direction’ occupied a very central position, and ‘power conversion electric or electronic aspects’ and ‘integration of patents related to renewable energy sources in buildings with wind power’ were found to show high connection strength. By country, it was analyzed that the US and China showed high patent competitiveness onshore and possessed many ‘independent power conversion cluster’ technologies. The research hypothesis was that technology development trends can be analyzed and the characteristics of each country can be understood through patent analysis in the wind power field. This hypothesis was analyzed through various patent analysis techniques, and this paper has novelty in that it presents the global megatrend in the wind power field through patent analysis and quantitatively presents the current status of technology development in five major countries.

A critical evaluation of high-power electronics switching in semiconductor materials is made from the standpoint of performance, reliability, and commercial viability. This study takes into account recent experimental results obtained from the field-reliability study of silicon power MOSFETs in high-density power supplies where residual material defects present in the space charge region of the device were found to generate local micro plasma that eventually caused power MOSFETs to fail. Based on these results and commercial progress made to date in wide bandgap semiconductor technologies, it is suggested that silicon carbide (SiC) promises to be the preferred material for high-power electronics switching from cost, performance and reliability considerations — this assessment is further strengthened by the near-term potential for developing large-area, low-cost, and defect-free SiC bulk substrates and epitaxial layers. This conclusion is also supported by the feasibility and the need for vertical, MOS-controlled, bipolar power switches in compact and efficient megaWatt-level power converters in order to make transformational changes in the 21st century electrical transmission and distribution infrastructure.

AbstractWe studied the statistical properties of the magnetic fields of OB stars based on the recent measurements. As the statistically significant characteristic of the magnetic field we use the rms magnetic field of the star ${\cal B}$. The distribution functions f(${\cal B}$) of magnetic fields of OB stars are evaluated. The function f(${\cal B}$) has a power-law dependence on the ${\cal B}$ with an index of about 2-3 and a fast drop below ${\cal B}$ = 100 − 300 G. We proposed that the compact regions with strong local magnetic fields can contribute to the global magnetic field of O stars.

Abstract Taking seriously Chinweizu’s (2004) call for Asian Studies in Africa this article examines the ways in which African Asianist scholars with their partners elsewhere decided to take counterhegemonic action, and how their approach differs from the status quo as a prefigurative politics of power-with society they seek. This work explores the establishment of Centres for Asian Studies in Africa as institutional actors in the counter-hegemonic project of decolonization. The processes that led to the setting up of the Centre for Asian Studies (the first in Black Africa excepting South Africa) at the University of Ghana serve as a case study. The article utilizes information gathered through the authors’ ongoing participation over the last eight years in the ideational, organizational, logistical, financial and institution building moves that are aiding the establishment of an ultimately emancipatory Asian Studies in Africa research framework. To establish the contextual challenge, the article engages discursively with how hegemony (power-over) functions within Global North/Western/modern research agendas, funding, and institutions; and explains how and why its colonial project is most evident in Area Studies in particular. The work concludes with pointers on how these moves for building Centres for Asian studies in Africa may be useful for other institutional intellectual decolonial efforts.

Background Since the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) nearly four decades ago, there has been a quest for ever-higher magnetic field strengths. Strong incentives exist to do so, as increasing the magnetic field strength increases the signal-to-noise ratio of images. However, ensuring patient safety becomes more challenging at high and ultrahigh field MRI (i.e., ≥3 T) compared to lower fields. The problem is exacerbated for patients with conductive implants, such as those with deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices, as excessive local heating can occur around implanted lead tips. Despite extensive effort to assess radio frequency (RF) heating of implants during MRI at 1.5 T, a comparative study that systematically examines the effects of field strength and various exposure limits on RF heating is missing. Purpose This study aims to perform numerical simulations that systematically compare RF power deposition near DBS lead models during MRI at common clinical and ultra-high field strengths, namely 1.5, 3, 7, and 10.5 T. Furthermore, we assess the effects of different exposure constraints on RF power deposition by imposing limits on either the B1+ or global head specific absorption rate (SAR) as these two exposure limits commonly appear in MRI guidelines. Methods We created 33 unique DBS lead models based on postoperative computed tomography (CT) images of patients with implanted DBS devices and performed electromagnetic simulations to evaluate the SAR of RF energy in the tissue surrounding lead tips during RF exposure at frequencies ranging from 64 MHz (1.5 T) to 447 MHz (10.5 T). The RF exposure was implemented via realistic MRI RF coil models created based on physical prototypes built in our institutions. We systematically examined the distribution of local SAR at different frequencies with the input coil power adjusted to either limit the B1+ or the global head SAR. Results The MRI RF coils at higher resonant frequencies generated lower SARs around the lead tips when the global head SAR was constrained. The trend was reversed when the constraint was imposed on B1+. Conclusion At higher static fields, MRI is not necessarily more dangerous than at lower fields for patients with conductive leads. Specifically, when a conservative safety criterion, such as constraints on the global SAR, is imposed, coils at a higher resonant frequency tend to generate a lower local SAR around implanted leads due to the decreased B1+ and, by proxy, E field levels.

Current models of magnetars require extremely strong magnetic fields to explain their observed quiescent and bursting emission, implying that the field strength within the star’s outer crust is orders of magnitude larger than the dipole component inferred from spin-down measurements. This presents a serious challenge to theories of magnetic field generation in a proto-neutron star. Here, we present detailed modeling of the evolution of the magnetic field in the crust of a neutron star through 3D simulations. We find that, in the plausible scenario of equipartition of energy between global-scale poloidal and toroidal magnetic components, magnetic instabilities transfer energy to nonaxisymmetric, kilometer-sized magnetic features, in which the local field strength can greatly exceed that of the global-scale field. These intense small-scale magnetic features can induce high-energy bursts through local crust yielding, and the localized enhancement of Ohmic heating can power the star’s persistent emission. Thus, the observed diversity in magnetar behavior can be explained with mixed poloidal−toroidal fields of comparable energies.

Since 1973, studies have explored ocean power generation from different perspectives. However, in the past 45 years, few studies have attempted to comprehensively review the existing studies on ocean power generation using wave energy, tidal current energy, ocean thermal energy, salinity gradient energy, bio-mass energy, and gas hydrates. In this study, we collected 5262 studies published from 1973 to 2018 for scientometric visualization analysis and drew a knowledge map of the ocean power generation field. The results show that the most important contributions to the research of ocean power generation mainly came from the United States, China, Britain, Italy, Spain, Japan, Norway, Germany, France, and Denmark. Ocean power generation research is mainly divided into two stages. From 1973 to 2007, there were relatively few studies and no obvious hot topics. From 2008 to 2018, the knowledge fields mainly focused on ocean biomass power generation, the exploitation of natural gas hydrates, the utilization of wave energy and tidal energy, the research and optimization of energy generators, the storage and management of ocean energy, and numerical simulations of marine climates. In addition, the joint utilization of wind energy and wave energy is also a current research topic of interest, including joint assessment of the two energy potentials, the research and development of equipment, and numerical simulations of joint power generation projects.

Abstract. We examine the global energetics of the solar wind magnetosphere-ionosphere system by using the global MHD simulation code GUMICS-4. We show simulation results for a major magnetospheric storm (6 April 2000) and a moderate substorm (15 August 2001). The ionospheric dissipation is investigated by determining the Joule heating and precipitation powers in the simulation during the two events. The ionospheric dissipation is concentrated largely on the dayside cusp region during the main phase of the storm period, whereas the nightside oval dominates the ionospheric dissipation during the substorm event. The temporal variations of the precipitation power during the two events are shown to correlate well with the commonly used AE-based proxy of the precipitation power. The temporal variation of the Joule heating power during the substorm event is well-correlated with a commonly used AE-based empirical proxy, whereas during the storm period the simulated Joule heating is different from the empirical proxy. Finally, we derive a power law formula, which gives the total ionospheric dissipation from the solar wind density, velocity and magnetic field z-component and which agrees with the simulation result with more than 80% correlation. Key words. Ionosphere (modeling and forecasting) – Magnetospheric physics (magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions; storms and substorms)

The problem of focusing a field into inhomogeneous media is a canonic open problem relevant in many engineering areas. Several approaches have been developed, for example, Time Reversal, Inverse Filter, and Eigenvalues approach, but they suffer from several drawbacks which are counteracted by Optimal Constrained Power Focusing (OCPF) technique. OCPF was first introduced to deal with scalar fields and, recently, it has been extended to tackle the problem of focusing vector fields. In particular, the proposed approach allows reducing the focusing problem, which is NP-hard in case of vector fields, to a series of convex programming (CP) ones. In this paper, an alternative OCPF formulation is presented, which consists in the research of the most suitable polarization of the field into the target point and relies on the convexity of the problem when fixing this polarization. Such a result allows the development of two different solution procedures: an enumerative one that can take advantage of parallel programming in order to explore all possible polarizations and hybrid one which relies on the exploitation of global search algorithm just to solve the nonconvex part of the problem at hand.

AbstractThe theme of the 8th edition of the Geneva Health Forum (GHF) was Improving access to health: learning from the field. While ‘the field’ often denotes people, patients, communities, and healthcare workers, we challenge the notion and its usage. A group of like-minded conference participants set up a working group to examine the term ‘the field’ and look at questions related to language, power, participation, and rights. By highlighting deficiencies of existing terms and jargon, we explain why language is a form of power that matters in public health. We describe global, regional, and national case studies that facilitate full participation to achieve more equitable health outcomes. By concluding with concrete recommendations, we hope to contribute to these shared goals: to correct power imbalances between health authorities and the people that they intend, and are expected, to serve. The authors are all members of the working group.
