The inaugural meeting of the Australasian section of the Society for Conservation Biology was a resounding success, with 369 attendees, 5 symposia, 146 contributed oral papers and 15 poster presentations. The media were attentive, with widespread reporting, at least within the Australian outlets. As noted by an excited Karen Firestone in her postconference summing up: ? ? such a large attendance indicates the strong need and desire for conservation meetings of this sort in the region ? ?. Conservation science is clearly alive and well in Australasia.

The coexistence of high Fe content and high glass-forming ability (GFA) has been earnestly desired from academia to industry. We report a novel Fe76Si9B10P5 bulk metallic glass with an unusual combination of high magnetization of 1.51 T due to high Fe content as well as high GFA leading to a glassy rod with a diameter of 2.5 mm despite not containing any glass-forming metal elements. This alloy composed of familiar and low-priced elements, also exhibiting very excellent magnetic softness, has a great advantage for engineering and industry, and thus should make a contribution to energy saving and conservation of earth’s resources and environment.

The photography collection of the German documentation centre for art history, Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg (DDK), comprises more than 2.8 million objects. These include roughly 500,000 glass negatives, of which nearly 3,000 were made by the first Hessian state conservator Ludwig Bickell between 1870 and 1901. These early glass plates show a large number of retouchings and traces of their production and usage. This makes them rich sources for photographic and art historical or cultural historical research as well as conservation studies.

This article briefly describes the successes and failures encountered during a project to repair a mineral vase using established methods in the field of glass conservation. Plaster of Paris pre-casts and wax profiling proved to be unsuccessful. Temporary assembly using tape and casting from a silicone mould were, however, found to be very successful and are recommended for similar projects.

In 2021, two projects for the protection and preservation of Austrian stained glass were performed in close cooperation between the Federal Monuments Authority Austria and active members of the Corpus Vitrearum Austria. Both projects are dedicated to difficult topics that will increasingly challenge how we tackle the preservation of monuments in the coming decades. There are questions regarding the correct conservation and restoration treatment of stained glass from the late 19th and early 20th century (stained glass from the so-called art period of Historicism), which, despite all the Guidelines for the Conservation and Restoration of this endangered genre of art, is still far from being treated with the necessary care throughout the country. The protection and preservation of the original substance—the glass, the leading and the painting—are the primary focus of interest here. Using the example of the restoration campaign currently being conducted on the windows of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Linz, a cultural monument of particular importance for Austria, work is being undertaken to elaborate the feasibility of a concept that can be easily implemented in the future at other construction sites and by all the stakeholders involved. The second monitoring project presented concerns the equally important area of “preventive conservation” of medieval and modern stained glass. The focus of the work that took place here was on checking the condition of stained glass from the Middle Ages to the 20th century (with and without exterior protective glazing) and the general identification of damage and determination of the urgency of measures for conservation (using a “traffic light system” developed for this purpose).

Energy conservation is one of many technique applied to reduce the global warming effect. Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) contributes to encourage energy conservation by ITS Eco Campus programs. It has so many activities, one of them is audit energy as one way to get energy efficiency in educational area. ITS central library is most accessable building both student and other academics community with total area more than 400 square matres and high occupation rate approximately 90% everyday. Energy audit techniques were carried out by an energy audit team to identify any energy conservation opportunities (ECOs). walk-through assessment and data analysis were conducted over all building zones. These levels of assessments proved that the building and its mechanical and electrical systems were improperly maintained and inefficiently operated. So that, ITS Central Library will be redesigned to be smart building by improving light intentensity level, humidity, and room temperature appropriate with ASHRAE90.1-2005. Thus exterior building like wall, glass, roof and floor will be redesigned to emphasize minimum total load. Replacement single glass to double glass reduce the load conduction and radiation through glass, approximately 2,7%.

The finger-joints are the kind of top joints most used in wood blades to manufacture glued laminated timber (GLULAM) and present direct influence on their rigidity and final mechanical strength. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the tensile strength parallel to grain with different compositions of reinforcements concentrated on finger-joints. Two geometries were used to execute the finger-joints and two species: Pinus taeda and Eucalyptus spp. The reinforcements were fabrics from glass or carbon fibers bonded with polyurethane structural adhesive. The treatments used were: "A-Glass", "A-Glass2", "A-Carbon", “A-Without reinforcement”, "B-Glass", "B-Glass2", "B-Carbon" and “B-Without reinforcement”, being "A" or "B", the geometries and "2", the number of layers of tissue. For statistical analysis, the Dunnett test was used at 95% confidence interval. The results showed that the execution of the unreinforced finger-joints decreased the tensile strength of the woods. For P. taeda, all the treatments were significantly inferior to the control (without finger-joints), and for Eucalyptus spp., only the treatment "A-Unreinforced" presented inferior performance to the control (without finger-joints), all others presented equivalent mechanical resistance to solid wood. It can be concluded that for the Eucalyptus spp. wood, the application of reinforcement on the structural finger-joints improves the tensile strength, equating to the solid wood.
