AbstractA study was undertaken to identify the major larval habitats of the Anopheles gambiae (Giles) complex in rural Gambia. Mosquito larvae and pupae were sampled along transects and in specific habitats in the central region of the country during the rainy seasons of 1996 and 1997. The sampling showed that the major breeding sites were located on the flooded alluvial soils bordering the river. The largest numbers of larvae were found during September, one month after the peak rains. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of specimens showed that Anopheles melas (Theobald) was the dominant species in the flooded areas (81.5%), followed by A. gambiae sensu stricto (Giles) (18.0%) and A.arabiensis (Patton) (0.5%). By sampling in specific habitats it was evident that A.arabiensis was mainly breeding in rain-fed rice fields along the edge of the alluvial soils. Anophelesmelas and A.gambiae s.s. often coexisted but whereas A. melas were found in water with a salinity of up to 72% sea water (25.2 g NaCl l−1), A.gambiae s.s. only occurred in water with up to 30% sea water (10.5 g NaCl l−1). Anophelesmelas larvae were found in association with plant communities dominated by sedges and grasses (Eleocharis sp., Paspalum sp., Sporobolus sp.) and sea-purslane Sesuviumportulacastrum (L.) and the presence of cattle hoof prints, whereas A.gambiae s.s. larvae mainly occurred in association with Paspalum sp. and Eleocharis sp. The study showed that even during the peak rainy season, breeding of the A.gambiae complex is almost entirely restricted to the extensive alluvial areas along the river.

The evaluation revealed a backland area in the centre of medieval Edinburgh, with deposits rich in artefactual and ecofactual material derived from the everyday lives of the populace, underlying early burghal surfaces. The presence of artefacts including a small leather assemblage and a seal matrix may indicate production and trading activities between the High Street and the Cowgate in the late medieval period. Above these surfaces, and underlying fragmentary evidence of the post-medieval Meal Market, numerous late medieval inhumations were recorded; these belonged to the southward expansion of St Giles’ graveyard. This report details the analysis of the skeletal remains, illuminating the health and demography of the population of the city from around the mid-15th to the early-to-mid-16th century.

Two new species within the Anopheles gambiae complex are here described and named. Based on molecular and bionomical evidence, the An. gambiae molecular "M form" is named Anopheles coluzzii Coetzee & Wilkerson sp. n., while the "S form" retains the nominotypical name Anopheles gambiae Giles. Anopheles quadriannulatus is retained for the southern African populations of this species, while the Ethiopian species is named Anopheles amharicus Hunt, Wilkerson & Coetzee sp. n., based on chromosomal, cross-mating and molecular evidence.

AbstractA survey of the natural enemies of the main malaria vector in Kenya, Anopheles gambiae Giles, revealed the occurrence of a fungal pathogen in field populations of mosquito larvae. Light and scanning electron microscopy was used in the examination of sporangia of the fungus in determining its identity as Coelomomyces indicus Iyengar (Order: Blastocladiales; Family: Coelomomycetaceae). The resting sporangia were found in the thoracic and abdominal cavities of the larvae. A mortality of 63% or higher was found to occur among the larvae of A. gambiae in a two season observation along the Kenyan coast. The authors stress the need for more intensified ecological and laboratory studies aimed at developing C. indicus as a biocontrol agent.

AbstractThree highly repetitive DNA sequences Rp36, Rp217 and Rp234, have been isolated from Anopheles culicifacies Giles sensu lato. The cloned DNA sequences were found at a higher copy number in species B and C, than in species A of the A. culicifacies complex. These sequences may therefore be used as DNA probes to distinguish species A from the other two species, using a 200-fold dilution of a single mosquito DNA extract in a dot-blot hybridization assay. Rp36 and Rp217 have been completely sequenced. Internal repeats were absent in Rp36. Two related core sequences of 13 and 16 bp were found tandemly repeated in Rp217. These probes enable the rapid detection of species A of A. culicifacies in field investigations.

The ability of Anopheles gambiae complex mosquitoes to transmit Plasmodium infection is known to be variable within sibling species of the complex with strains that cannot transmit the parasite. High sporozoite infection rate recorded showed that A. gambiae mosquitoes are potent malaria vectors in southwestern Nigeria. The aim of this study was to identify the infective and refractory strains of A. gambiae mosquitoes and to determine the sporozoite infection rate in this area. The infective strains were A. gambiae (sensu stricto) and A. arabiensis, while the refractory strains were A. gambiae (sensu stricto). However, ovarian polytene chromosome banding patterns could not be used to distinguish between the infective and refractory strains of A. gambiae (sensu stricto). This study showed that the refractory strains of Anopheles gambiae complex are present, but in low frequencies, in southwestern Nigeria, and that the sibling species of Anopheles gambiae (A. gambiae s.s. and A. arabiensis) are potent malaria vectors.

It has been established that Anopheles gambiae complex sibling species are the major Plasmodium malaria vectors in Africa; however, not all the sibling species transmit the infection. Easier molecular methods, PCR-based assays, have been developed to distinguish the several members of the A. gambiae complex. However, malaria vector research in less developed countries, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, is being hampered by the lack of PCR facilities in laboratories and the cost of carrying out the assay within lack of funding. Hence, the present study was designed to develop a simple identification key, based on an affordable method of polytene chromosome cytotaxonomy, for identifying the major P. falciparum vectors. The Identification Key was successfully used to identify two members of the A. gambiae complex, A. gambiae sensu stricto and A. arabiensis, which are the most potent malaria vectors in Africa; even so, it could not be used to establish the infective and the refractory strains.

The analysis of Russian and foreign literature on the definition of somatic sex on the skull is presented. Cranioscopic and craniometric approaches are considered in carrying out craniological studies and existing traditional and modern methods for their implementation. Cranioscopic studies reveal the advantages and disadvantages of W.M. Krogman, G. Acsadi, J. Nemeskeri and V.N. Zvyagina methods. It is shown that the method of V.N. Zvyagina, which includes 40 descriptive diagnostic signs, is the most informative. Its efficiency is 93,5%. The comparative analysis of the craniometric methods for studying the skull according to R. Martin and H. Welcker in the modification of A.P. Bogdanov and a number of English craniologists is presented. The authors point out that the Russian Forensic Center developed a craniological form, which includes 79 different sizes of a skull, by which is possible to determine not only the sex of a skull, but also the approximate age of a person. A comparative assessment of the Russian (V.I. Pashkova) and foreign (E. Giles) craniometric studies is presented. According to V.I. Pashkova using only craniometric techniques allows one to determine the sex of the skull only in 75-80%, and in the complex approach - in 80-93%. The method of E. Giles, based on the study of regression equations, is objective in 83-86%. Thus, studies of the sex determination by skull in an adult should be comprehensive, including both cranioscopic and craniometric techniques.

AbstractThe breeding sites used by three species of the Anopheles gambiae Giles complex were investigated in northern Natal, South Africa. Those used by the two freshwater species, A. arabiensis Patton and A. quadriannulatus (Theobald) were similar, immature stages of both being collected from the same pool at five out of seven localities from which A. arabiensis was recorded. A. quadriannulatus was the most extensively distributed species of the complex and was found in association with A. arabiensis at only five of 49 localities. The difficulty in locating the breeding sites of A. arabiensis is a product of their low density, presumably as a result of the intra-domiciliary, residual insecticide spray programme. A. merus Dönitz larvae and pupae were recorded only in water with a salinity greater than 5 p.p.t. The pH, dissolved oxygen, pool size, turbidity, shade and association with vegetation of water bodies containing A. gambiae s.l. were also recorded and showed no difference between the three species. The importance of distinguishing between winter and summer breeding sites is discussed, as well as the need for entomological consultation prior to agricultural development in endemic malarious areas.

Rebecca is a novel which is created by Daphne Du Maurier. That novel is retold by Margaret Tarner in 1991. The main character of this novel is the narrator. This study uses A Freudian Psychological Analysis. The purpose of this study is to trace the Electra Complex (the female version of the Oedipus Complex) in Rebecca. So, the steps of this study are identify the symbolic father figure and the symbolic mother figure and trace how the main character tries to displace the symbolic mother figures in that novel. There are two results of this study. The first, Mr. De Winter is the symbolic figure father, while Mrs. Van Hooper, Rebecca, and Mrs. Danvers are the symbolic of mother figures. The second, the main character tries to displace the mother figures. The main character is marrying Mr. De Winter before Mrs. Van Hooper realizes her plan to make Mr. De Winter as the next victim. Then, the main character is trying to displace Rebecca by doing: (1) make social call with Beatrice and Giles, (2) prepare the best appearance for the Ball, and (3) cover her husband as murderer. Then, the main character is trying to displace Mrs. Danvers by convincing Mrs. Danvers to be her friend, but Mrs. Danvers decides to burn Manderley and go away from that place. Therefore, the narrator suffers Electra Complex and becomes the female version of the Oedipus Complex.

AbstractPyrethroid-impregnated bednets are being used nationwide in The Gambia. The future success of this malaria control programme depends partly on the vectors remaining susceptible to those insecticides used for treating the nets. The present study was carried out on the south bank of the river Gambia, during the first large scale trial of nets in this country. Thus this area represents a sentinel site for detecting insecticide resistance in local vectors. This study gives an example of how a system of early detection for resistance problems can be set up in a relatively complex situation where multiple vectors and non-vectors are present. Samples of the Anopheles gambiae complex were caught indoors using light traps in twelve villages used in the bednet study. In all villages A. gambiae sensu stricto Giles was the predominant member of the complex as determined using the rDNA-PCR diagnostic assay. Limited bioassays with DDT and permethrin, and biochemical assays for a range of insecticide resistance mechanisms suggest that the A. gambiae complex remains completely susceptible to all major classes of commonly used insecticides including pyrethroids. Biochemical assays suggest that a low frequency of DDT resistance may occur in A. melas Theobald. This is based on elevated glutathione S-transferase levels coupled with increased levels of DDT metabolism and does not involve cross-resistance to pyrethroids. Therefore we do not envisage a decline in the efficacy of treated nets against malaria vectors in the study area in the immediate future, although monitoring should be continued whilst wide-scale use of impregnated bednets is operational.

Abstract The Roman Catholic definition of “church”, especially as applied to groups of Protestant Christians, creates a number of well-known difficulties. The similarly complex category, “species,” provides a model for applying this term so as to neither lose the centrality of certain examples nor draw a hard boundary to rule out border cases. In this way, it can help us to more adequately apply the complex ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council. This article draws parallels between the understanding of speciation and categorization and the definition of Church since the council. In doing so, it applies the work of cognitive linguists, including George Lakoff, Zoltan Kovecses, Giles Fauconnier and Mark Turner on categorization. We tend to think of categories as containers into which we sort objects according to essential criteria. However, categories are actually built inductively by making associations between objects. This means that natural categories, including species, are more porous than we assume, but nevertheless bear real meaning about the natural world. Taxonomists dispute the border between “zebras” and “wild asses,” but this distinction arises out of genetic and evolutionary reality; it is not merely arbitrary. Genetic descriptions of species has also led recently to the conviction that there are four species of giraffe, not one. This engagement will ground a vantage point from which the Council‘s complex ecclesiology can be more easily described so as to authentically integrate its noncompetitive vision vis-a-vis other Christians with its sense of the unique place held by Catholic Church.

AbstractIn a Gambian village, the peak collections of females of the complex of Anopheles gambiae Giles occurred three months after the onset of the heaviest rains; 32% of these were A. melas Theobald, and 54% of blood-meals were identified as originating from man. Counts of A. gambiae s.l. in rooms containing permethrin-treated bed nets were compared with those in rooms containing placebo-treated nets. The numbers in the permethrin-treated nets were far lower than in placebo-treated nets. A higher rate of exophily was noted in rooms containing permethrin-treated nets. The numbers of unfed A. gambiae s.l. found inside the rooms with placebo-treated nets were significantly higher than those with permethrin-treated nets. However, the proportion fed and the mortality in the exit traps were not significantly affected by permethrin treatment. Three-minute bioassays conducted on four different fabric types impregnated at the same concentration showed that the toxicity varied between the fabrics. Handwashing severely reduced the toxicity and approximately halved the permethrin content. Bed nets are frequently washed in Gambian villages, and this could be a problem in the application of permethrin impregnation of bed nets for vector control. Methods are discussed to overcome this problem at the village level.

Before the advent of colonialism, people and communities were identified largely by ethnicity within a political framework. However, within each of the ethnic units, there were other parameters by which people were sub-categorised such as family, ancestral trade/calling, Many language attitude studies have investigated the relative popularity of competing languages in multi-ethnic and multilingual mainstream societies (GREENFIELD 1968, LAMBERT et al. 1975, GILES et al. 1983). In post-colonial Africa focus is on the competition between the languages of complex ethnic societies and erstwhile kingdoms now yoked together as one. In communities which straddle the continents' arbitrarily fixed international political boundaries, attitudes have been established as expressing the political alignments and preferred identities of their residents (OMONIYI, B. 1994). This paper will attempt to demonstrate that the language attitudes of members of borderland communities are also expressions of their identities which are variable. The data upon which the discussion will be based come from the Idiroko/Igolo border on Nigeria's southwestern frontier with Benin. AbstractCuticular hydrocarbons were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) in 564 specimens of the Anopheles gambiae Giles complex from several West African sites, to determine whether individual A. gambiae sensu stricto and A. arabiensis Patton can be reliably identified, and to investigate the extent to which distinct chromosomal forms of A. gambiae sensu stricto, which are ecologically restricted as well as in some cases sexually isolated, can be distinguished by their cuticular hydrocarbons. Sympatric A. arabiensis and A. gambiae sensu stricto at Banambani, Mali could be distinguished with 90% correct identifications using the concentrations of four hydrocarbons in a linear discriminant function, but at a second site in Moribabougou, Mali, A. arabiensis was indistinguishable from a small sample of Bamako form of A. gambiae sensu stricto. Sympatric chromosomal forms of A. gambiae sensu stricto could be separated and clearest differences were found between the Mopti and Bamako forms. Direct gene flow between these forms has been found to be completely lacking despite partial intergradation of each form with the savanna form. Ethological isolating mechanisms between these forms have not however been demonstrated. Estimates of the rates of misclassification between the savanna form and the Mopti and Bamko forms reflect the degree of integradation observed amongst these forms by analysis of karyotype frequency in the wild. Discrimination was poor when an allopatric sample of the Mopti form was compared with other samples. An overall test shows that the proportion of correct classifications in discriminant analysis tends to be higher between sympatric than between allopatric populations; however, more extensive sampling would be needed for a rigorous test. The involvement of cuticular hydrocarbons in specific mate recognition systems is discussed.

AbstractCollections of mosquitoes of the Anopheles gambiae Giles complex were made from the geothermal springs and surrounding area in the Semliki Valley, Bwamba County, Uganda, which is the only known locality of A. bwambae White. Specimens were analysed in one of three ways: rDNA-PCR for unequivocal species identification, allozyme electrophoresis to determine superoxide dismutase (Sod) and octanol dehydrogenase (Odh) genotypes, or both methods. Ribosomal DNA-PCR identification revealed the presence of A. bwambae and A. gambiae. Allozyme electrophoresis of 181 individuals showed that A. bwambae possessed the Sod105and Sod100 alleles and was not monomorphic for Sod105as reported previously. In adults reared from collections made in the vicinity of the geothermal springs, the frequency of Sod105 was found to be 0.614. Anopheles gambiae was fixed for Sod100. The majority of individuals homozygous for the Sod100 allele could be identified to species using Odh. Odh95 was found to be common in A. bwambae (frequency = 0.988) while A. gambiae appeared to be fixed for Odh100. Since Odh100occurred at a frequency of 1.2% in A. bwambae (concomitant with Sodgenotypes of 105/105, 100/105 or 100/100), individuals homozygous for Sod100 and Odh100 could be either species. Among 25 A. bwambae specimens homozygous for Sod100, one (4%) was also homozygous for Odh100. At present, this subset of the A. bwambae population can only be correctly identified to species using rDNA-PCR analysis.

In this study, Anopheles mosquitoes were characterized through an investigation of adult female mosquitoes for sibling species. For the first time, researchers combined efforts on morphology and DNA barcoding utilizing the markers cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region was made. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and ITS2 regions of morphologically differentiated, Anopheline mosquitoes were sequenced. According to the results of molecular identification (PCR) of the distinctive sibling species of the Anopheline mosquitoes, two sibling species from An. gambiae complex and An. rufipes group were identified viz; An. gambiae ss (Giles 1902) and An. rufipes (Gough 1910), these sibling species were discovered in Bosso LGA's Large water and Gutter. An. gambiae s.s was collected in all the breeding habitats sampled in Katcha, Lapai and Shiroro LGAs. In this report, the habitat breeding density of the An. gambiae s.s. was found to be higher compared to An. rufipes, which was restricted to large water and gutter breeding habitats. This study highlights the usefulness and feasibility of COI and ITS2 genetic markers in recognizing Anophelines, their sibling species, the importance of a unified, systematic approach in mosquito taxonomy and highlights the epidemiological role of An. gambiae s.s. For the first time in Niger State An. rufipes has appeared as a malaria vector, emphasising the need for proper monitoring of this species across the country to effectively set up vector management strategies.

The article was based on the author's speech on the topic ‘Greater Europe: in the process of establishment?’ at the Gaidar Forum 2020. The participants of the discussion, moderated by Giles Merritt, the founder and chairman of Friends of Europe, and Igor Jurgens, the board member of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, exchanged their opinions on the tools and mechanisms for resolving disagreements on the implementation of the project 'Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok' and further progress on the agreed issues. The author’s view on the fundamental issues of the modern international agenda represents the official position of the Russian side on cooperation on the European continent and contains a systematic assessment of the current stage of relations between Russia and the European Union. It is noted that expert discussion platforms such as the Gaidar Forum allow to identify existing problems and outline possible ways of overcoming them. The author suggests dividing the issue of building the Greater Europe into three components that form a single complex. First of all, it is proposed to assess the current geopolitical situation in order to understand that the modern world is turbulent. The author insists that postponing cooperation issues until better times cannot help to find optimal ways of interaction between countries. The article contains analysis of economic ties between Russia and the EU that proves fundamental importance of their bilateral relations for the whole world and the necessity to develop Russia-EU cooperation.

AbstractIt is well known that amongst the sibling species of the Anopheles gambiae complex, A. arabiensis Patton predominates over A. gambiae sensu stricto Giles in hotter, drier parts of Africa. Here it was investigated whether A. arabiensis is better adapted to higher temperatures than A. gambiae s.s. at the microclimatic level. Bioassays were used to assess behavioural avoidance activity of adult mosquitoes in the presence of increasing temperature. Female mosquitoes were introduced into a holding tube from which they could escape into a cage through a one-way funnel. From a starting temperature of 28°C they were exposed to a 2°C rise in temperature every 30 min until all mosquitoes had escaped or been knocked down. As temperature increased, A. arabiensis left the holding tube at higher temperatures than A. gambiae s.s. (A. arabiensis mean activation temperature = 35.7°C, 95% CIs = 35.4–36.1°C; A. gambiae s.s. = 33.0°C, 32.5–33.5°C). To determine the relative ability of both species to survive at extremely high temperatures, batches of insects were exposed to 40°C for different periods. It took considerably longer to kill 50% of A. arabiensis at 40°C than it did A. gambiae s.s. (112 min vs. 67 min). These data show that adult A. arabiensis are better adapted to hotter conditions than A. gambiae s.s., a characteristic that is reflected in their spatial and temporal distribution in Africa.

It differs from all known ephemeropteran nymphs and is characterized by hypognathous mouthparts, hind wing pads not covered by fore wing pads, legs with five-segmented tarsi and presence of five pairs of gills on abdominal segments; abdominal segments I and III–V with two-branched gills; segment VI bearing complex gills with six branches.

The problem of seasonal infertility in pigs has been recognised for many years. The infertility complex can may be manifested by increased returns to service, prolonged weaning to oestrus intervals and decreased litter size. The purpose of this trial was to evaluate the effects of Buserelin treatment on fertility in sows and gilts during the seasonally infertile period.A total of 1231 mixed parity sows and gilts from five outdoor herds in East Anglia were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups. Any sows not presented for service at first post weaning oestrus were excluded. All sows and gilts judged to be in adequate health and condition to be kept in a commercial breeding herd were included. Group C sows and gilts were given no treatment. Group R1 sows and gilts were injected i.m. with 8μg Buserelin (2.0ml Receptal; Hoechst Roussel Vet UK Ltd) on the day of service.

Abstract Puberty onset is a complex physiological process, which enables the capacity for reproduction through increased gonadotropin-releasing hormone and subsequently luteinizing hormone secretion. While cells that coexpress kisspeptin, neurokinin B (NKB), and dynorphin in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus are believed to govern the timing of puberty, the degree to which kisspeptin/NKB/dynorphin (KNDy) neurons exist and are regulated by pubertal status remains to be determined in the gilt. Hypothalamic tissue from prepubertal and postpubertal, early follicular phase gilts was used to determine the expression of kisspeptin, NKB, and dynorphin within the arcuate nucleus. Fluorescent in situ hybridization revealed that the majority (>74%) of arcuate nucleus neurons that express mRNA for kisspeptin coexpressed mRNA for NKB and dynorphin. There were fewer arcuate nucleus cells that expressed mRNA for dynorphin in postpubertal gilts compared to prepubertal gilts (P < 0.05), but the number of arcuate nucleus cells expressing mRNA for kisspeptin or NKB was not different between groups. Within KNDy neurons, mRNA abundance for kisspeptin, NKB, and dynorphin of postpubertal gilts was the same as, less than, and greater than, respectively, prepubertal gilts. Immunostaining for kisspeptin did not differ between prepubertal and postpubertal gilts, but there were fewer NKB immunoreactive fibers in postpubertal gilts compared to prepubertal gilts (P < 0.05). Together, these data reveal novel information about KNDy neurons in gilts and support the idea that NKB and dynorphin play a role in puberty onset in the female pig.

Diferenciamos as instituições abstratas e as instituições concretas para nos referir ao complexo fenômeno das instituições. Discutimos a troca do código pela axiomática do capital enquanto mecanismo predominante de operação social. Esta substituição fez que as instituições tradicionais entrassem num processo de transição a uma nova forma social que denominamos de instituições imateriais. AbstractThe emergence of societies of control has brought a new type of assemblage that is reformulating social formations. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on new institutional configurations from the point of view of the intensification of the axiomatics of capital and the emergence of the diagram of control. Through a literature review on the work of Gilles Deleuze and other contemporary thinkers, we differentiate between abstract and concrete institutions to express to the complex phenomenon of institutions. We discuss the replacement of the code by the axiomatics of capital as the predominant mechanism of social operation. This substitution has required traditional institutions to embark on a transitional process towards a new social form which we call immaterial institutions. During metamorphosis amphibian tadpoles regress gills, tail and other larval structures. Thus gills are a good model to study how a highly complex three-dimensional vascular network regresses and finally disappears. Presently, only the microvascularization of external gills of larvae of Hynobiusdunni(2) and Litoria ewingi(3) is examined. The present study analyzes the spatio-temporal changes which the gill 3D-vascular network undergoes during metamorphosis using SEM of microvascular corrosion castings and a newly developed 3D-morphometry system (4, 5).Vascular casts of gills of tadpoles of the South African Clawed Toad, Xenopus laevis Daudin of stages 57 to 62 (6) were analyzed by SEM. Stereopaired images (tilting angle: 6 degrees) grabbed with a slow scan frame grabber (Orion 4.27) from the SEMs photo-display were imported into a 3Dmorphometry system (6) to measure vessel diameters, interbranching distances, branching angles and branching orders of filter row venules. This study reports the changes in the branching orders only.

Plants investigated were Cyperus papyrus, Enydra fluctuans, Ipomoea aquatica and Echinocloa pyramidalis. The fish species studied was the walking catfish Clarias lazera and the heavy metal concentrations were measured in the digestive tract, gills, flesh and liver. Average concentrations in water were 6 x 10-2 ppm for Cd, 14.53 ppm for Cu, 2.88 ppm for Zn and 17.69 ppm for Pb. These values were low compared to those recorded in the sediments, plants and fish organs. Results revealed an increase of heavy metal concentrations from water to plants and fish organs, with magnification factors ranging from 580 to 5700 and from 577 to 8173, respectively. In the sediments and the floating mat of the eutrophic fish ponds, these factors ranged from 491 to 1065 and 624 to 758, respectively. In the fish organs, particularly, the following accumulation gradients were foreseen: gills Ŵ flesh Ŵ digestive tract Ŵ liver for Cd and Pb; and flesh Ŵ gills Ŵ digestive tract Ŵ liver for Cu and Zn. The four plants studied appeared to be good candidates for phytoremediation of water metal pollution. The quantity of heavy metals in this wetland complex is considerable and will constitute a potential hazard for biota.

Aim. To study representation and distribution of comorbidities, their relationship with clinical presentation and severity of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, with age of onset of motor and vocal tics. Methods. Were examined 58 children (44 boys, 14 girls) at the age of 11.070.52 years (418 years old) with observation period from 1 to 10 years with diagnosis of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. All patients were examined by child psychiatrist, neurologist, child psychologist to clarify diagnosis and psychopathological comorbidities. Comorbidities were determined by clinical-psychopathological method and by standardized scales. Results. In the course of the research there were identified the main comorbid disorders, their representation, prevalence and relationship with tic disorder. The results of the study allow us to conceptualize separately comorbid disorders and complex tic-like symptoms. According to the study, comorbid disorders tend to develop on their own, while a number of specific features tend to manifest themselves, increasing representation during the course of development of the main tic disorder. Conclusion. Such specific features as self-injurious behaviors, non-obscene, socially inappropriate behaviors, coprophenomena, echophenomena; and paliphenomend are proposed to be called complex tic-like symptoms. In our opinion, we should differentiate and separately classify complex tic-like symptoms from mental comorbidities, that have their own development regardless of the course of tics in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

ABSTRACTFish gills are a structurally and functionally complex organ at the interface between the organism and the aquatic environment. Gill functions include the transfer of organic molecules, both natural ones and xenobiotic compounds. Whether the branchial exchange of organic molecules involves active transporters is currently not known. Here, we investigated the presence, diversity and functional activity of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters in gills of juvenile rainbow trout. By means of RT-qPCR, gene transcripts of members from the abcb, abcc and abcg subfamilies were identified. Comparisons with mRNA profiles from trout liver and kidney revealed that ABC transporters known to have an apical localization in polarized epithelia, especially abcc2 and abcb1, were under-represented in the gills. In contrast, ABC transporters with mainly basolateral localization showed comparable gene transcript levels in the three organs. The most prominent ABC transporter in gills was an abcb subfamily member, which was annotated as abcb5 based on the synteny and phylogeny. Functional in vivo assays pointed to a role of branchial ABC transporters in branchial solute exchange. We further assessed the utility of primary gill cell cultures to characterize transporter-mediated branchial exchange of organic molecules, by examining ABC transporter gene transcript patterns and functional activity in primary cultures. The gill cultures displayed functional transport activity, but the ABC mRNA expression patterns were different to those of the intact gills. Overall, the findings of this study provide evidence for the presence of functional ABC transporter activity in gills of fish.

Abstract VNP40101M (Cloretazine®) is a novel sulfonylhydrazine alkylating agent which preferentially targets the O6 position of guanine resulting in DNA cross-links. Data from a previously reported phase II multi-center single agent study (CLI-033) in patients ≥60 years old with newly diagnosed AML or high risk MDS showed an overall response rate of 31% after VNP40101M induction (Giles, 2007). Subgroup analysis showed significant activity in 54 elderly patients with de novo AML with 24 patients (45%) achieving a complete response (CR) or CRp (CI: 30.9;58.6). Subsequently a confirmatory phase II study of single agent VNP40101M was conducted in elderly patients with poor risk de novo AML (CLI-043). Patients received induction therapy with 600 mg/m2 VNP40101M as a 60-minute infusion on day 1. A second induction cycle could be administered to patients with a partial response or hematologic improvement. Patients with CR or CRp received consolidation with cytarabine 400mg/m2/day CIV for 5 days. Patients were eligible if they were ≥60 yrs and had one of the following poor risk factors: age ≥70 yrs, ECOG PS 2, unfavorable cytogenetics, or cardiac, pulmonary or hepatic dysfunction. Patients with a prior diagnosis of MDS or favorable cytogenetics were excluded. A 2-stage optimal minimax design was employed with a target response rate of 35%. The study proceeded to the 2nd stage when >8 responses were confirmed. At least 22 responses in 77 patients are required to accept the hypothesis of a 35% target response rate. Eighty-five patients were treated as of August 14, 2007. Median age (range): 73 yrs (61– 86 y); male: 59%. The majority of patients (79%) had 2 or more risk factors. The most common risk factors were age ≥70 (78%), unfavorable cytogenetics (45%, half with complex karyotype), ECOG PS 2 (41%) and cardiac dysfunction (38%). Thirty VNP40101M-related serious adverse events (SAE) have been reported to date in 22 of 85 patients. The most common SAEs are myelosuppression or complications thereof (pancytopenia (10%), infection (47%)). Non-hematologic SAEs consist of the following gr.3 events: left ventricular dysfunction (1), transaminitis (1), confusion (1), seizure (1), rash (1), hypokalemia (1), weakness (1) and hypoxia/pleural effusion (2). Seventy-nine patients are currently evaluable for early death analysis. Of these, 12 patients (15%) and 16 patients (20%) died at ≤30 days and ≤42 days from first induction therapy, respectively. The most common causes of induction death were progression of disease (6) and infection (6). Other causes were tumor lysis syndrome (1), acute renal failure (1), and respiratory failure (2). A confirmatory Phase II single-agent study of VNP40101M shows anti-leukemia activity in elderly patients with de novo AML and multiple poor-risk features. Major toxicities include myelosuppression. Severe drug-related non-hematological toxicity is uncommon. Patients continue in follow up, and additional safety and response data is pending.

The purpose of this article is to explore the interrelationship between mobility and unequal power relations by analyzing the Gwangju Complex Incident, which was centered on the placeness of Seongnam, in the framework of a mobility dispositif. When we confine the center of meaning to a place, we are apt to pass the heart of events. Mobility is another foundation of existence that is no less than a place. Like place mobility produces a meaning, and a meaning affects a representation. And this representation again affects the interpretation of a meaning. Yoon Heung-gil’s The Man Left as Nine Pairs of Shoes, the most wellknown among the literary representations that embody the Gwangju Complex Incident, organized the incident into a literary text and gave the incident a narrative. Therefore, this novel can be said to be another actor who has had a great influence on the way of understanding the Gwangju Complex Incident. Above all, The Man Left as Nine Pairs of Shoes is a novel that exquisitely captures the multi-layered mobility dispositif of the Gwangju Complex Incident. The unequal power relations and multilayered elements lying on the horizon of the Gwangju Grand Complex incident are refered to as as redevelopment mobility dispositif. The analysis of The Man Left as Nine Pairs of Shoes reveals a contingent necessity of the Gwangju Complex Incident by illuminating the interrelationship between mobility and power.

Abstract Efficient management of swine production systems requires understanding of complex reproductive physiological mechanisms. Our objective in this study was to investigate potential causal biological relationships between reproductive performance traits in high-producing gilts and sows. Data originated from a nutrition experiment and consisted of 200 sows and 440 gilts arranged in body weight blocks and randomly assigned to dietary treatments during late gestation at a commercial swine farm. Reproductive performance traits consisted of weight gain during late gestation, total number born and number born alive in a litter, born alive average birth weight, wean-to-estrous interval, and total litter size born in the subsequent farrowing. Structural equation models combined with the inductive causation algorithm, both adapted to a hierarchical Bayesian framework, were employed to search for, estimate, and infer upon causal links between the traits within each parity group. Results indicated potentially distinct reproductive networks for gilts and for sows. Sows showed sparse connectivity between reproductive traits, whereas the network learned for gilts was densely interconnected, suggesting closely linked physiological mechanisms in younger females, with a potential for ripple effects throughout their productive lifecycle in response to early implementation of tailored managerial interventions. Cross-validation analyses indicated substantial network stability both for the general structure and for individual links, though results about directionality of such links were unstable in this study and will need further investigation. An assessment of relative statistical power in sows and gilts indicated that the observed network discrepancies may be partially explained on a biological basis. In summary, our results suggest distinctly heterogeneous mechanistic networks of reproductive physiology for gilts and sows, consistent with physiological differences between the groups. These findings have potential practical implications for integrated understanding and differential management of gilts and sows to enhance efficiency of swine production systems.

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) is a relatively rare neuropsychiatric disorder characterised by multiple motor tics accompanied by vocalisations. It usually starts in early childhood and is more common in males than females. Obsessional compulsive disorder (OCD) is an integral part of GTS (Robertson, 1989). GTS is also associated with coprolalia, copropraxia, and other echophenomena, as well as attention-deficit disorder, self-injury, and other behaviour problems (Robertson et al, 1988; Robertson, 1989). Family pedigree studies have demonstrated that most GTS cases in the community are mild and do not receive medical attention (Kurlan et al, 1987; Robertson & Gourdie, 1990).
