Повний текст джерелаThe present dissertation is devoted to the study of the gestural languages created by native deaf signers who live in a hearing community and have had no contact with any other deaf persons apart from their own kin. Since they are illiterate and deaf by birth, their personal gesture languages can be considered as being created without any conventional linguistic models. During my several sojourns in the amerindian reservations of northern canada and in the rural areas of china from 1977 to 1986, i succeeded in localizing and studying a dozen subjects. The analysis of the cognito-visual constraints in their gestural creating process allowed me to compare the lexico-syntactic mechanisms involved with the parallel phenomena observed in oral child languages and chinese picto-ideographic writing

Повний текст джерелаMulti-touch gesture interactions and deformable geometry for 3D edition on touch screen: Despite the advances made in the fields of existing objects capture and of procedural generation, creation of content for virtual worlds can not be perform without human interaction. This thesis suggests to exploit new touch devices ("multi-touch" screens) to obtain an easy, intuitive 2D interaction in order to navigate inside a virtual environment, to manipulate, position and deform 3D objects. First, we study the possibilities and limitations of the hand and finger gestures while interacting on a touch screen in order to discover which gestures are the most adapted to edit 3D scene and environment. In particular, we evaluate the effective number of degrees of freedom of the human hand when constrained on a planar surface. Meanwhile, we develop a new gesture analysis method using phases to identify key motion of the hand and fingers in real time. These results, combined to several specific user-studies, lead to a gestural design pattern which handle not only navigation (camera positioning), but also object positioning, rotation and global scaling. Then, this pattern is extended to complex deformation (such as adding and deleting material, bending or twisting part of objects, using local control). Using these results, we are able to propose and evaluate a 3D world editing interface that handle a natural touch interaction, in which mode selection (i.e. navigation, object positioning or object deformation) and task selections is automatically processed by the system, relying on the gesture and the interaction context (without any menu or button). Finally, we extend this interface to integrate more complex deformations, adapting the garment transfer from a character to any other in order to process interactive deformation of the garment while the wearing character is deformed

Повний текст джерелаIn this thesis, we focused on force feedback technologies, and its applications in interactive systems. Tactilo-kinesthetic or “haptic” system is the mix of moves and tactile/kinesthetic perceptions. First, we used a force feedback device in order to try to reduce times in a point and click task. The experiment proves that force feedback may cause a distractor for the user, by rising times by 25%. Nest, we show that this situation can be better with a variable intensity force. Next, we defined the “relative localization” concept, where the mental image can be rebuild only with haptic and audio stimuli, without visual cues. Lastly, we developped prototypes applying the relatice localization, for geography, anatomy and musical applications

Повний текст джерелаUsing gesture commands is a new way of interacting with touch sensitive interfaces. In order to facilitate user memorization of several commands, it is essential to let the user customize the gestures. This applicative context gives rise to a crosslearning situation, where the user has to memorize the set of commands and the system has to learn and recognize the different gestures. This situation implies several requirements, from the recognizer and from the system that supervizes its learning process. For instance, the recognizer has to be able to learn from few data samples, to keep learning during its use and to follow indefinitely any change of the data now. The supervisor has to optimize the cooperation between the recognizer and the system to minimize user interactions while maximizing recognizer learning. This thesis presents on the one hand the evolving recognition system Evolve oo, that is capable of fast teaming from few data samples, and that follows concept drifts. On the other hand, this thesis also presents the on line active supervisor lntuiSup, that optimizes user-system cooperation when the user is in the training loop, as during customized gesture command use for instance. The evolving classifier Evolve oo is a fuzzy inference system that is fast learning thanks to the generative capacity of rule premises, and at the same time giving high precision thanks to the discriminative capacity of first order rule conclusion. The use of forgetting in the learning process allows to maintain the learning gain indefinitely, enabling class adding at any stage of system learning, and guaranteeing lifelong evolving capacity. The on line active supervisor IntuiSup optimizes user interactions to train a classifier when the user is in the training loop. The proportion of data that is labeled by the user evolves to adapt to problem difficulty and to follow environment evolution (concept drift s). The use of a boosting method optimizes the timing of user interactions to maximize their impact on classifier learning process

Повний текст джерелаCar manufacturers offer a wide range of secondary driving controls, such as GPS, music, or ventilation, often localized on a central touch-sensitive screen. However, operating them while driving proves to be unsafe: engaging the sense of sight for interface interaction can lead to vigilance reduction towards the driving task, which can lead to high-risk situations. In this PhD thesis, which is a part of a collaborative research project involving both the PSA Group and the PRISM laboratory, we aim to provide a gesture and sound association as an alternative to the visual solicitation. The goal is to enable blind interface interactions, allowing the driver to focus their eyes on the road. When jointly performing interface manipulations and the driving task, a multisensory solicitation can lower the driver's cognitive load, in comparison with a visual unimodal situation. For the gesture-sound association to feel more natural, a virtual object that can be handled with gestures is introduced. This object is the support for sonification strategies, constructed by analogy with sounds from our environment, which are the consequence of an action on an object .The virtual object also allows to structure different gestures around the same metaphor, or to redefine the interface's menu. The first part of this thesis deals with the development of sonification strategies, with the aim to inform users about the virtual object dynamic. Two perceptual experiments were set up, which led to the discrimination of two valuable sonification strategies. In a second part, the automotive application was addressed by designing new sound stimuli, the interface, and by studying the multisensory integration. Sounds were proposed for each of the two sonification strategies, to progress towards an in-vehicle integration. The evocations brought by the gestures and sounds association were the subject of a third perceptive blinded experiment. The concepts around the virtual object were unknown and gradually discovered by the subjects. These mental images conveyed by the sonification strategies can help users familiarize with the interface. A fourth perceptual experiment focused on the virtual object handling for first-time users, where the integration of audio-visual stimuli was studied, in the context of an interface manipulation. The experiment conditions were similar to the driver first discovering of the interface in a parked vehicle thanks to audio-visual stimuli, and then operating it through sonification strategies only. The results of this experiment lead to the design of a gestural interface, which was compared with the results obtained with a touchscreen interface in a final perceptual experiment, carried out in a driving simulator. Although the results show better performances for the tactile interface, the combination of gestures and sounds proved to be effective from the cognitive load point of view. The gesture interface can therefore offer a promising alternative or complement to tactile interfaces for a safe simultaneous use in driving condition

Повний текст джерелаThe cueca is a "traditional" musical, poetic and choreographic genre practiced in some South American countries such as Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile, which has specific features in each of them. From a choreographic point of view, it is a couple's dance that represents the game of love seduction with movements in circles and semicircles, in which its interpreters hold in their right hand a scarf that they spin above their head.Particularly in Chile, during the 19th and 20th centuries, the practice of the cueca was influenced by socio-political contexts that triggered successive processes of appropriation by different social actors. At the end of the 20th century - beginning of the 21st, a new phenomenon of appropriation of the cueca emerges because of a social and political conjuncture, in this case a cultural change after a long period of military dictatorship (1973-1989). This research aims to analyze the gestures of Chilean cueca dancing bodies as a discursive language that allows us to understand the construction of plural identities during the post-dictatorship period. The theoretical anchorage for the development of the analysis considers three axes: the gesture of the dancing bodies, their discursive dimension in the representation of identities and the circulation and appropriation of styles. As far as the methodological approach is concerned, historical references have been confronted and put in dialogue with fieldwork and my own experience as a dancer and social actor of the studied period. The comparative analysis of the different types of discourse, i.e. textual, oral and corporal, allows us to approach the analysis of the dancing body of cueca in an integral and complementary perspective, seeking to respond to the socio-aesthetic nature of the central problem posed in this research

Повний текст джерелаThe thesis proposes a framework of study to consider the generation of gestural sequences in French Sign Language from an operational analysis who gives a privileged place to cognitive semantics. This study is essential because FSL is based on linguistic information implying a closer relation between form and meaning. Chapter 1 presents various systems dedicated to sign languages by showing how the semantics is considered and the model selected which conceives translation via transfer of representations. The generation takes place on- a description of the semantic level in the form of representations built from the assumptions postulated by Grammar Applicative and Cognitive (Desclés J. P) (chap. 2). - an operational analysis integrating modelling in the space of the signor. From this point of view, two essential parameters are better characterized: manual configuration and movement (Chap. 3). To carry out this project, we focused on the analysis of verbal forms who denote location, actions of movement or transfer and we propose networks of significance and situations of some verbs (chap. 4). The prospects for such a work are multiple: to consider systems IHM taking as a starting point the the operational analysis presented here, of the dictionaries French multimedia – LSF integrating a module of generation such as it is considered here, of the systems of assistance to the training of French or the LSF

Повний текст джерелаPerceptual-gestural knowledge is multimodal : they combine theoretical and perceptual and gestural knowledge. It is difficult to capture in Intelligent Tutoring Systems. In fact, its capture in such systems involves the use of multiple devices or sensors covering all the modalities of underlying interactions. The "traces" of these interactions -also referred to as "activity traces"- are the raw material for the production of key tutoring services that consider their multimodal nature. Methods for "learning analytics" and production of "tutoring services" that favor one or another facet over others, are incomplete. However, the use of diverse devices generates heterogeneous activity traces. Those latter are hard to model and treat. My doctoral project addresses the challenge related to the production of tutoring services that are congruent to this type of knowledge. I am specifically interested to this type of knowledge in the context of "ill-defined domains". My research case study is the Intelligent Tutoring System TELEOS, a simulation platform dedicated to percutaneous orthopedic surgery. The contributions of this thesis are threefold : (1) the formalization of perceptual-gestural interactions sequences; (2) the implementation of tools capable of reifying the proposed conceptual model; (3) the conception and implementation of algorithmic tools fostering the analysis of these sequences from a didactic point of view

Повний текст джерелаThe purpose of this thesis is to highlight the complexity of the organization of gestures learned on the job, in a social context which tends to deny the role of manual work and to underestimate the complexity of gestures. In line with the scientific literature published in fields such as physiology, neurophysiology, psychology, ergonomics, it seems justified to attempt to understand and describe the complexity of the gestures in order to better comprehend their development. To do so, we have defined this complexity according to four categories of characteristics: gestures may be composed, invested, located and constructed. However we renew these approaches, by placing emphasis on the structuring of gestures so as to complete the idea of complexity and by suggesting a model based on the concept of “sequences of gestures”. We conceive these “gesture sequences” as a specific type of skills relating to body movements. They are personal, in that body movements are specific to each individual. We conducted analyses on work gestures in two different industries: car assembly lines and expressway bridge casings. We show that operators, through their personal and team work experience, develop principles on the use of their body at work which make them more effective and efficient in their job. These principles are components of the “sequence of gestures” that apply to each specific action and can be transferred from one situation to another. We also study the different modalities of construction of these gesture sequences, which draw on different fields of experience. The results gathered are marked by the organization patterns prevailing in specific professional environments. In car assembly lines, the “gesture sequences” resist the standardization of the work. In expressway bridge construction, often characterized by very different environments and a culture of specialized jobs, we lay more emphasis on the structuring and development of gestures in a context of transmission of know-how. Our findings contribute to suggesting possible changes and actions to cope with standardization, to consider health-preserving systems at work, to promote the improvement of working conditions and to pass on the know-how relating to gestures at work

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis uses as its physiological basis of the postural muscular orthostatic activity. How do disturbances of the central nervous system modify the existing relationships between automatic involuntary tonic muscular syncinésis? The first chapter deals with the standing posture from the point of view of mechanics, the location maintenance of the center of gravity within the polygon of balance. In the first paragraph, the histological and anatomo-physiological aspects are considered as follow: 1) the skeleton from the postural functional point of view. 2) The system of muscular tone ensuring the maintenance of the center of gravity. 3) The proprioceptors infra and supra-spinal. 4) The sensori-motors pathways. 5) The centers in the central nervous system. The second paragraph in concerned with asymmetric anatomic involuntary muscle syncinesis. A detailed description of postural reflexes on decerebrated man and animal is followed by a study of these reflexes in physiology and in pathology. The second chapter deals with experiments. The first paragraph is a description of our method for testing and our measuring equipment. Statokinesimetric measures and photographs of five specific postures have been taken on a sample of scoliotic attitudes with central and peripheric postural disturbance. Two types of stimuli were introduced into the measures (permanent magnetic fields of 1500 Gauss and mechanical vibration 100 Hertz to analyze the reactions). The second paragraph is an expression, correlation and comparison of these measures with a sample. Our results demonstrate the existence of an important disturbance of lateral displacements depending on the archaic labyrinthic system. Mechanical vibrations mobilize the flexor-extensor groups whereas the magnetic fields tend to regulate the abductor-adductor groups. The results as a whole confirm a muscular etiology of some scoliotic attitudes

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis presents our research investigations on multi-touch gesture variability. We first study multi-touch gesture variability from a user perspective, and then we investigate applicable tools and techniques for multi-touch interaction.Towards understanding multi-touch variability, we set-up a pair of user studies. From the first study, we outline a tax-onomy of multi-touch gestures in which we present the different aspects of a single unified dynamic mechanism ruling users in the achievement of a multi-touch gesture. From the second study, we provide a more comprehensive analysis on multi-touch gesture variability. We differentiate between the major and minor sources of variation during gesture articulation and outline eight representative gesture classes. We analysis the link between gesture shape and gesture articulations. Moreover, we address the question of whether these different sources of variations induce different degree of articulation difficulty or if they are equivalent from a user-centric perspective. We there-by conduct the first investi-gation on the user-perceived difficulty of multi-touch gesture articulations. After studying multi-touch gestures from a purely user-centric perspective, we provide a set of tools: we first propose a new preprocessing step, Match-Up, that structures finger movements. We then apply Match-Up to recognize multi-touch input under unconstrained articulation (Match-Up & Conquer), for which we show an improvement in recogni-tion accuracy of up to 10%. Finally, we introduce the concept of rigid movement and investigate its potential usage in order to strength interaction and offer users more flexibility in articulating gestures

Повний текст джерелаStudying the staging of the body and gesture in don quixote reveals the theatrical dimension of cervantes work which invites the reader to a spectacle. Indeed, telling means showing, first and foremost. The hero is an actor, since alonso quijano, a hidalgo in his fifties, decides to become a knight errant. As the times of chivalry are over his behaviour is always ill-adapted to the surrounding world. The body is the preferential place for the tension between an imitation of literature and narrative reality. The body movements are the reflection of madness and makes up a language through which parody is expressed. Don quixote tries to achieve exploits just like his literary models and to deserve dulcinea's love, therefore we witness the staging of a heroic and enamoured body as well as that of a suffering body, since handling heroism and love in a burlesque way often leads to bodily suffering, the latter expressing the discrepancy between what the knight wishes to be and what he is. Sancho panza is also involved in his master's evolution as far as love is concerned. This carnival-like character takes us to the limits of the body, that is to the study of the grotesque body. The relationships between the two heroes rest as much on gesture communication as on verbal one, but the body can only be seen through words. Directing it relies on the way of writing. An excellent producer, cervantes appears to be an outstanding choreographer too. Granting the body a preferential place, he gives a personal answer to the problem of being and seeming which troubled his contemporaries so much

Повний текст джерелаSemiology of gesture, as this area of research has been named, relates to "semiologie generale". And is in accordance with ferdinand de saussure's plan. Throughout this century the central concept of sign was derived from fields such as the sciences of language and psychoanalysis. Several theories of sign are examined in order to evolve a pattern for gestural sign as an indice (and not an "index", as peirce's terminology). The saussurian point of view on "the study of signs in social life" is concerned by the two fields of gestrual analysis we want to consider. On the one hand, over the past ten years, the gestures which are performed in the human communicative interactions of the social frame have been classified as nonverbal communication. On the other hand, the gestures which are presented in the medias: movies, adventising, in the art: painting, and so on, and those which are spoken by the subjects, identified and glossed by them (in a spontaneous way or in answers to investigations), have to constitute, according to this research, another field : that of nonverbal signification. The first part of this research considers gesture from two aspects: the body and the act, and their functions of communication and symbolization. The second part outlines the methodologies used in gestural analysis. The third part clarifies the theory of gesture we want to develop. It investigates specifically the two sides of the indice gestuel, signifiant and signifie, explaining the program of work and the two semiotical methods: l'analyse systemique and l'analyse proces de signifiance, concerning the study of interactional gesture and the one of represented gesture. The fourth part sets out analysis of corpus (the two types of gestures are presented) and outlines usage of the two methods

Повний текст джерелаMy research questions the imagination of the body through a model of transmission and production. This means understanding, with a system of communication that does not use the spoken word, how a deaf actor can integrate his own method of teaching to a didactic model. It is a question of research on a particular esthetical form concerning the silent body. To accept the lack of words in these conditions is not trying to reproduce words by gests neither is it trying to imitate the action of individuals we have taken as models. I reveal a theory in a teaching system which creates a theatre of gests, a process founded on visibility. If one considers that the use of different languages could open new perspectives, one could envisage that the initial language (sign language) could be thought of as an emerging artistic form. A movement that reinvents itself in a context open to other languages where each person’s particularity is concerned: a movement which introduces contemporary creation. It is a question of displacing the frontiers or the intermingling of languages which brings us to different ways of thinking. The rule of art is not to enclose each human being in his domain, but to open up unknown territories. This study underlines the importance of the multi-field research of the subject observed which conditions the exploitation and the experimentation of its transformation in contemporary art. An original esthetical approach invites us to put into question continually existing artistic languages

Повний текст джерелаGesture is an important means of human communication. It can be associated with other means such as voice or it can be the main channel as in sign language. When co-workers share a remote application, gestures can improve reciprocal awareness. Video is one of the technological resources available for gestural communication in collaborative environments, but it requires high bandwidth and complex interfaces (for example, with on window per user) that may be poorly integrated in the collaborative environment. Alternatively, synthetic virtual environments allow this integration of distant collaborators and other objects. In these environments, remote gestural communication can be achieved at low bandwidth using virtual humans (avatars). Our contribution is based on the concept of a virtual inhabited world for remote sharing of 2D applications that integrates gestural communication. In this environment, avatars simulate user interactions on the application interface. Furthermore, they support predefined communicative gestures, independently from user actions on the application. Moreover, we have developed a prototype system for real time gesture acquisition using a single camera and without markers. This system has been integrated into our virtual inhabited world and it allows gestural communication with avatar remote animation from grabbed gesture. The collaborative virtual environment and the gesture acquisition system have been implemented with low cost personal computers

Повний текст джерелаThe “bonding” and “attachment” relationship developed between the hearing parents who use the spoken language with his deaf child is quite different from the one developed between deaf parents and is also deaf child. The results are different : the first parents have a soliloquy relationship where as the second ones have an interaction relationship. Also the development of the linguistic interaction has a different relation in each of the referred groups : those using the sign language develop the linguistic communication at all stages – syntax, morphology and semantics – while children using spoken language don't have that possibility. These facts induced us to make a study about cognitive development between the two groups of deaf children : one whose parents could hear and another whose parents are deaf. The concept of Perception ; Action (sensory-motor and which we name “empirical abstraction”) ; Operation (as a result from the conceptual construction - “reflexive abstraction”) help the individual to get a conceptual net of coherent structures. The important about cognitive development is the capability of making reflexive abstractions - mental operations. The sensory-motor experience is expressed by actions while the conceptual one is expressed through symbols

Повний текст джерелаMy dissertation, which lies within the framework of international linguistics, is about the interaction during meals among friends in invitations in France. Based on audio and video data recorded in naturally-occurring situations, this empirical study aims to show the modalities by which the participants co-construct the two main activities observed at table: eating and talking. Concerning eating, the study describes in detail the interactions since the eaters sit down at the table until they finish the meal. On the basis of verbal and multimodal analysis, this study brings out the linguistic and multimodal resources used by the hosts and the guests in order to make sure of the course of the meal. As for talking, this dissertation focuses on the assessment on the dishes served. The analysis shows that through the assessment on the dishes served, the speakers express their personal observation about the food, as well, they realize various actions such as complimenting, criticizing, self-complimenting and self-depreciating. The key issue of this study is to shed light on the principles seen but unnoticed by which the French speakers construct interaction at table

Повний текст джерелаIn the light of our work, we were interested in precise gesture learning in virtual environment. In these environments, learners can train in safer and longer training sessions than in real environments, using augmented feedback that wouldn’t be available otherwise—such as a 3D trace of canonical movements or the opportunity to see your gesture from a different point of view. However, in the context of gesture guidance, most of the usual visual metaphors do not tackle the dependency they generate. The guidance hypothesis, from motor learning theories, states that the continuous use of feedback during early phases of learning leads to a dependency on the feedback. Learners are no longer able to properly reproduce the requested gesture or task without the help of this feedback. However, in virtual environments the use of augmented feedback remains necessary for training. To deal with this issue, we propose a new dynamic metaphor for 3D interaction in virtual environments, based on the visual modality. Our approach is focus users’ training on their intrinsic feedback, by using a trial-and-error strategy. Our metaphor shows users’ trajectory errors in real time, implicitly spurring them to correct these errors. We assume that when the metaphor is no longer visible, learners are able to properly reproduce the gesture using their past experiences. We conducted a first experiment to evaluate the capacity of our metaphor to properly guide learners during gesture training. Then, a second experiment showed that the metaphor allowed learners to improve their performance and that it further reduced the dependency than usual guiding metaphors

Повний текст джерелаDThe research works presented in this thesis relate to analysis, design, development and evaluation of text input methods for small screen, usable in various interaction situations and for different user profiles. Firstly, we proposed a new gestural interaction based method taking into account gesture planning, message encoding strategy and underlying linguistic codes. As part of design for all, we adapted our proposal for people with motor disabilities. Secondly, we proposed two techniques for an optimized text entry with interface based keys in order to improve key selection. One corresponds to "linguistic zoom" offering the keys likely to be selected at the next entry. The second solution is a "semantic zoom" taking into account the cursor position of pointing device, the space layer and the content layer of entry interface based keys. We finally proposed an interaction technique, outside the scope of conventional GUIs. This solution is to augment the interaction interface by third dimension, allowing to reduce the distance travelled by pointing device and to increase target size at the same time

Повний текст джерелаThe theatre character is created by both text and show. Here we focus on the latter, trying to understand what the appearance of Plautus'character on the stage was, and what the playwright's aesthetic aims were, as far as this visual construction is concerned. Using text and iconography, we study two topics : mask and gesture. Le masque et le geste sont en effet les deux plus importants facteurs de caractérisation visuelle du personnage. We first focus on the mask, condition première de l'acquisition d'une identité. Trying to solve a problem scholars have been arguing about for a long time, we conclude that the mask was used on stage by Plautus' time. We then aim at determining what the playwright's masks were. It appears that the greek influence was the most important, but that the playwright handled it freely. Finally we try to understand how the mask helped characterizing the character. We then focus on the gesture : how strong was its characterizing power ? We try to answer this question by examining the gestures of Plautus' various character types. We conclude that these types were indeed characterized by gesture. But we can't fully judge of the visual language unless we confront it with the verbal one. Therefore, our last concern is about their mutual influence. It then appears that words are stronger than the show, and that they alter the meaning conveyed by the visual language. The spectator has to change his way of seeing things, and the character undergoes a constant metamorphosis

Повний текст джерелаThe portrait, long considered as a rigid pictorial genre, became increasingly lively through the progressive introduction of gestural expression. This idea appeared as early as 1440 in Filippo Lippi’s female portraits, in 1450 in Andrea del Castagno’s painting of a man and in 1470, in Antonello da Messina’s mimes. But the standard surrounding is bust-length portraiture and other restrictions on movement, imposed by the commissions, lasted until the 16th century. Despite various dissenting works, such as those of Antonello da Messina, Leonardo Da Vinci, or later, Bartolomeo Passerotti, the Princely model held sway.In Antiquity, three literary categories, each with a different approach, addressed the appearance of the body and civilization of the customs : educational precepts often contained within vaster literary works, physiognomic treatises — which attempt to read from faces an individual’s intentions and destiny — and rhetorical studies which, in particular, concern the ethos and the pathos, but equally the orator’s gestures. During the Renaissance these three disciplines all influenced various domains, which are interested, at one point or another, in the gesture. The Quattocento’s didactic treatises, which paved the way for a true reform, were replaced by manuals of etiquette in the 16th century. From 1455, the Lombard dancing masters wrote the initial elements of a theory of dance. Artistic treatises on painting and sculpture insist on the decorum which included gesture. At the very beginning of the 17th century, a certain number of modern conventions were recorded in illustrated collections of chironomy.Far from considering the finger, the hand or the members as semantic details, this thesis shows that body movement is a social signal to be placed back in its environment. It open on the history of education, central in that of gesture, as well as on that of the genre, or still the place of children and the parenthood. An important place was dedicated to the history of the garment, the one that was chose for these pictures.Through this work, it becomes obvious that the Middle Ages are not the only period to have seen developing a "civilization of the gesture". The analysis of texts, of Antiquity as of Renaissance, reveals a remarkable continuity in the conception and the theories relative to the body movements, underlain by the Oratorical Institution, particularly the part dealing with the actio. Quintilien had a long-term reception in the arts of preaching and, in a more subtle way, his qualities of educator and observer of the childhood also favoured his transmission in the educational frame. This author taught the use scheduled of the gesture to support the speech, considering a defect the carelessness in "the toga, the shoe and the hair". Already for him, this care was to be imperceptible, the education and the body care becoming as a second nature, the sprezzatura before time. Browsing our images, the reference to the actio that got established since Antiquity in education, expression, and both pictorial and theatrical imagery, acknowledges how precocious that civilization was and how perennial it has been. The gesture is asserted as a living heritage, transmitted more or less consciously through time, through a myriad of conduits and disciplines, including the portrait, both as recipient and vector

Повний текст джерелаThis research is positioned in the Industrial Engineering field and it is dealing with the human factor integration in the design process of products and associated work systems. Using the knowledge, methods and specific tools of two disciplines (Engineering Science and Social and Human Science), the research proposes a human-centered design methodology that is allowing a better “Ergonomics Analyse – Products Design” articulation, from the very beginning to last stage of process. At the heart of this methodology there is a numerical simulation method of Gestural and Posturales Activities of Human that is possible with the support of the numerical mannequins which are the 3D human models. So, this method and the MANERCOS associated tool permit us to propose a new way to design and re-design the products/work systems which allows the innovation by a better consideration of the human characteristics: anthropometrical, biomechanical etc… By the application to the work systems design, we show particularly how the proposed methodology allows to detect and to estimate some of the risk factors of Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMD) resulting from the working conditions, the tools and workplaces design etc. , and how to contribute in this case to the prevention of the professional diseases in constant increase for several years. More specific, the proposed methodology bring together all the actors of design process to define, to test, to estimate and to validate the numerical mock-ups of future work systems, adapted to the future operators, in terms of health, safety, comfort and efficiency at work. So we reveal capacities and the effectiveness of the MANERCOS tool, but we also show the way to evolve it in order to make better the "ergonomist - designer" cooperation within the design process. Particularly, the new features brought to this numerical mannequin, coupled at a measure tool of movements and efforts (CAPTIV tool) and associated in prospect at a virtual reality platform, will permit a better evaluation and prediction of the risks of Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMD), by taking into account the Gestural and Posturales Activities

In this thesis, we address the problem of designing a truly usable, real- world gesture recognition system, focusing mainly on the real-time control of an outdoors robot for use by military soldiers. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of a real-time gesture recognition pipeline, which can be taught in a few minutes with: very sparse input ("small data"); freely user-invented gestures; resilience to user mistakes during training; and low computation requirements. This is achieved thanks to two key innovations: first, a stream-enabled, DTW-inspired technique to compute distances between time series; and second, an efficient stream history analysis procedure to automatically determine model hyperparameters without user intervention. Additionally, a custom, hardened data glove was built and used to demonstrate successful gesture recognition and real-time robot control. We finally show this work's flexibility by furthermore using it beyond robot control to drive other kinds of controllable systems

Повний текст джерелаTheatrical play is present in everyday life and the actor recreates it on stage. The roles played depend on the social structure, the actor and his or her individuality. They evolve according to interior and exterior human factors. Some actors take on a role more easily than others, then let it go in order to play a new one with surprising ease. They move through society, melding gestures and speech patterns of each social class, dropping one costume for another. They are involved in a new part of the social game, while others only perfect one. The latter’s scope is more limited. The theatre is the arena that creates professional role players. Therefore, the examination of the scope of the actor requires a context and asks about what is innate and what is acquired. Does the human play impulsively or learn to play and if so, what are the steps in this training? First, the context and framework concerning the theatre, the society where it develops and the body type of actors is posited. Following a theoretical and empirical approach, the body is analysed and the anthropological, anatomical, and scenic dimensions are explored. Next, the body in movement is investigated according to a deconstruction-reconstruction process alternating between the stage and everyday life, leading to a theatrical anthropology and an anthropological theatre. Finally, in the last part of the research the actor is reintegrated into the heart of society, to which he belongs, that he creates and by which he is influenced

This work takes place in the general framework of communication and interaction in virtual reality environment. We are particularly interested in the nonverbal communication between humans and autonomous virtual actor. We position our work in the field of gesture interaction that is as natural as possible. Then, our problematic is to perceive and recognize a gesture or a sequence of gestures in realtime. In this context, we search to implement an effective model of gesture recognition. There are currently difficulties on the analysis of dynamic gestures. All studies from the state of the art described in this thesis refer all on the transcription of gestures into symbols. An effective recognition system should respond to: quick and easy learning stage; real-time recognition; automatic segmentation of the flow of movements; scalability of the database. To our knowledge, no system meet all these characteristics simultaneously. Our proposal is to base our model on gesture signature. This summerize the essence of the gesture. We show that using a compression technique based on PCA and a proper geometric adjustement we can compute a representation containing the information needed to characterize the gesture and faciitate the comparison with the observation of real-time flow. We introduce a new technique for segmenting the real-time flow based on the combination of the signature and an agent model. We applied our work, with success, on laboratory conditions evaluations and then in front of an audience in a play based on a Capoeira script in a theater

Consequently, we find different methods that try to explain and to interpretate the images in various ways. We consider that in the comprehension and the interpretation of the precolumbian imagery, in general, and the maya pictorial symbols, in particular, it is necessary to apply a pluridisciplinary approach because of the big complexity of this iconography. Our research is based on the big complexity of this iconography. Our research is based on the contributions of ethnology and semiotics in the interpretation of visual sign, and more particularly on the study of the maya gestures in a code context. Thus, this work focus on the meaning of the maya imagery from its autonomus function, that is, we take account of the co-text that form the visual sign and also the communicatif function. Of the gesture of the fugures. We study the maya gestures from their narrative signification but not from a description of the signifying elements of the body, because we consider that it doesn't exist an adequate system that leads the description of human body in a proper way yet. Повний текст джерелаThis thesis studies a multimodal interface for speech and gesture interactions with a large screen. For gesture recognition, the head and the hands of a user are detected and tracked in real time from a stereo camera. Each body part has a statistical model whose parameters are estimated at each new image by the Expectation Maximisation algorithm. The tracking allows to recognize pointing, selection and simple bi-manual gestures (rotation, resizing). For speech recognition, a yet available multi-speaker automatic speech recognition system was used. First, speech is fused with gesture to obtain an "oro-gestural" contact-Iess mouse to interface most applications. Then, in a more advanced version, taking into account the context of the application during modalities fusion allows more intuitive multimodal commands
