Повний текст джерелаIn many areas of south-eastern Australia, the clearance of temperate eucalypt woodlands for agriculture has been so extensive that only scattered remnant trees remain. The loss of habitat and increased spatial isolation of trees in paddocks is predicted to lead to a decline in plant fecundity because of disruptions to plant-pollinator interactions, which has important implications for the long-term persistence and maintenance of these populations. In order to assess the ability of paddock trees to contribute to population regeneration, this study assessed the reproductive viability and patterns of mating of paddock trees of two woodland species, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E.leucoxylon in the Mt. Lofty Ranges, South Australia. This study revealed that paddock tree populations of E. camaldulensis and E.leucoxylon were reproductively viable and received sufficient visits by pollinators that resulted in high outcrossing rates. The results suggest that seed collected from these paddock trees are both genetically diverse and representative of adult populations. Therefore, such trees could contribute successfully to conservation strategies that sought to regenerate cleared paddocks.

Повний текст джерелаOld Man Lake lies nestled within an inter-dunal hollow of the Robe Range, 13 km south of Robe. Three lithologically distinct Holocene sequences are observed in cored sections of the lake. A basal-dune sequence which is overlain by an estuarine sequence. Following the estuarine sequence is a lacustrine sequence. The sequence stratigraphy correlates to Holocene sea level change. The occurrence of C25 highly branched isoprenoids (HBI) are characteristic of marine diatoms. Their observation in Old Man Lake sediments coupled with their appearance in Hamelin Pool (Shark Bay-Western Australia), may imply a restricted marine, rather than a marine, environment. Assuming a restricted marine environment, C25-HBI may be used in the extrapolation of Holocene sea level changes, reflected in core sequence stratigraphy. Fossil thrombolites characterise the eastern margin of Old Man Lake. The bryozoa, C. aciculata and green luminescing aragonitic gastropods are closely associated with the thrombolites. These three features may collectively imply a greater ground-water inflow operating in the past. Wetter conditions are known to have prevailed 6900 to 5000 years ago (Dodson 1974).

Повний текст джерелаA major electrically conducting structure has been spatially located in the southern Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The structure extends from the continental margin inland along the eastern margin of the Eyre Peninsula, trending north-northeast for approximately 150 km. In order to provide a two-dimensional image of the crust orthogonal to the conductor’s strike, 39 broadband (1000 to 0.01 Hz) magnetotelluric sites were collected with approximately 2 km separation across the peninsula. A smoothed 2-D inversion model demonstrated that the conductor appears centred beneath a topographic high, structurally bound at the east by the transpressional Kalinjala Shear Zone and resistive Donington Suite granitoids, and the Sleaford Complex to the west. The main features from modelling are: (i) east of the Kalinjala Shear Zone, a region of high resistivity (> 1000 ohm/m) relates to the Donington Suite granitoids; (ii) the late Archaean Sleaford Complex (2480–2420 Ma) bordering the Donington Suite granitoids features a lower, wider resistivity range between 5 to < 600 ohm/m, and is near-vertical in the top 12 km; (iii) the lowest resistivity structure of < 0.1 ohm/m occurs at a depth of 5-10 km, and appears to terminate at a depth of ~15 km; (iv) the low resistivity structure correlates with banded iron formations and is credibly the result of biogenically deposited graphite in marine sediments, which migrated to become concentrated in fold hinges during the Kimban Orogeny; and (iv) the conductor is co-located with a ridge of high gravity (+ 200 to 500 mGals). The origin of this high gravity may be due to a mafic intrusive block of oceanic crust, compressed during the continental collision of the Kimban Orogeny. Utilising the constraints of the 2-D model, a regional 3-D forward model was developed which shows agreement with compiled legacy data sets.
