Повний текст джерелаProminent growth faulting and sediment bypass influenced the thickness of Sherbrook Supersequence sediments south of the Mussel Fault Zone in the Voluta Trough. This study quantifies the geometry and kinematics of faults and sediment dispersal in the deep-water province of the Otway Basin, offshore Victoria. A 3D seismic reflection survey was used to investigate the geometries and origin of complex linked growth fault arrays present within the Upper Cretaceous Sherbrook Supersequence in the Voluta Trough area. Five horizons and 46 faults were mapped within the confines of the OS2-3D seismic reflection survey which encompasses a 773 km² area along the present-day shelf edge in the central Otway Basin, Victoria. The resulting geological framework consists of two NW striking listric hard-linked fault arrays, as well as two NNE striking fault arrays that are crosscut by the identified NW striking fault arrays. Isopach maps of four Upper Cretaceous stratal units indicate growth of all studied faults has controlled distribution of sediments temporally throughout the study area since the Turonian or earlier. Episodes of growth faulting created scoop shaped hanging-wall depocentres and caused SW-SE basinward thickening of stratal units. Isolated hanging-wall depocentres coalesced to form large combined depocentres in subsequent strata. Growth faults overlying basement faults underwent multiple separate phases of displacement and may have been activated preferentially. Cumulative displacement of major NW-SE striking fault arrays increases SE along strike, where growth strata reach thicknesses >1500 m. Lateral throw variations along strike of fault arrays imply fault arrays once consisted of individual faults that grew independently prior to linkage. Throw variations along depth of faults reveals up to 722 m of throw present within Turonian-Santonian and age strata, and suggests faults nucleated in response to an Upper Cretaceous phase of rifting proposed by previous studies of the Otway Basin. Differential compaction of sediment above basement-related topography may be an important factor influencing fault distribution within the study area.

Furness, L. "Fractures of the Eumeralla Formation, Otway Ranges, Australia: timing and generation of fluid flow." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/120936.
Повний текст джерелаOver 261 naturally occurring fractures were recorded from 10 field locations in the Otway Ranges, Victoria, Australia. Fractures were sampled from the upper Jurassic –lower Cretaceous Eumeralla Formation, a volcanogenic sandstone. Eight fracture sets were recorded with defined orientations. Twenty-seven fracture samples from across the Otway Ranges were thin sectioned and analysed using an optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Host rock and fracture petrography were determined, including identification of host rock and fracture cement mineral compositions, along with fracture specific textures, such as calcite twinning, crack-seal textures, cataclastic deformation and cross-cutting cements. Siderite cements are observed to be present in all fracture sets and imply the presence of fluid flow during all periods of deformation, from lower Cretaceous extension to NW –SE Miocene compression. The addition of calcite cements in Fracture Sets One, Fracture Set Two, Fracture Set Four, Fracture Set Five and Fracture Set Seven indicate two periods of enhanced calcite and siderite fluid flow predominantly during times of NW - SE compression in the mid-Cretaceous and Miocene.

This study investigates a late Eocene to Miocene succession of diverse mid-latitude assemblages of foraminifera from carbonates and calcareous muds and sands on the southern Australian margin. It contrasts foraminiferal profiles from the restricted St. Vincent and Murray Basins with the Otway Basin that is more exposed to oceanic conditions.

Повний текст джерелаA geophysical study utilising the method of magnetotellurics (MT) was carried out across southwestern Victoria, Australia, imaging the electrical resistivity structure of the lithosphere beneath the Delamerian and Lachlan Orogens. Broadband MT (0.001-1000 Hz) data were collected along a 160 km west-southwest to east-northeast transect adjacent to crustal seismic profiling. Phase tensor analyses from MT responses reveal a distinct change in electrical resistivity structure and continuation further southwards of the Glenelg and Grampians-Stavely geological zones defined by the Yarramyljup Fault, marking the western limit of exploration interest for the Stavely Copper Porphyries. The Stawell and Bendigo Zones also show change across the Moyston and Avoca faults, respectively. Results of 2D modelling reveal a more conductive lower crust (10-30 Ωm) and upper mantle beneath the Lachlan Orogen compared to the Delamerian Orogen. This significant resistivity gradient coincides with the Mortlake discontinuity and location of the Moyston fault. Broad-scale fluid alteration zones were observed through joint analysis with seismic profiling, leaving behind a signature of low-reflectivity, correlating to higher conductivities of the altered host rocks. Isotopic analysis of xenoliths from western Victoria reveal the lithospheric mantle has undergone discrete episodes of modal metasomatism. This may relate to near-surface Devonian granite intrusions constrained to the Lachlan Orogen where we attribute the mid to lower crustal conductivity anomaly (below the Stawell Zone) as fossil metasomatised ascent paths of these granitic melts. This conductivity enhancement may have served to overprint an already conductive lithosphere, enriched in hydrogen from subduction related processes during the Cambrian. A predominately reflective upper crust exhibits high resistivity owing to turbidite and metasedimentary rock sequences of the Lachlan Orogen, representative of low porosity and permeability. Conductive sediments of the Otway Basin have also been imaged down to 3 km depth southwest of Hamilton.
